Seniors Festival to take place in October

Kylie Swan - 2014 FDCA Regional Winner

Seniors festival

FDCA Educator of the Year

Seniors across Hobsons Bay are encouraged to step up and celebrate the 2014 Victoria Seniors Festival with plenty of free and low cost activities to get active and social. The October-long festival will include walking tours, a tea dance, a bird watching tour, Device Advice, Upcycled Fibre Fiesta, a WESTANDPROUD film, vegetable gardeners, Seniors Rock’n’Roll and POW Circus, an author talk with David Hill, Grandparents storytime – perfect to share with grandchildren – and 100 years of Williamstown Red Cross.

It is with great pleasure to announce one of our educators has won a 2014 Family Day Care Australia (FDCA) award. Kylie Swan, a registered educator with Hobsons Bay Family Day Care service for eight years, has been named a Regional Winner for the Educator of the Year category. Kylie is a strong advocate for families and children, an active member of the community, and a mentor to many of her peers. Our educators provide a high quality service and it is great to see them recognised. This year five out of our 52 educators were nominated. Kylie will find out on 22 September whether she can add State Winner to her Regional Winner title.

Altona beach market On 21 September 2004 a town crier stood on the corner of Pier Street and Railway Street South and officially opened the first Altona beach market. Hundreds of people attended and there were 67 stalls. Ten years on and three of those stalls are still in operation. The money generated from the weekly market, one of the few midweek markets in Victoria, has enabled the Altona Village Traders Association to give back to the local community by funding community events such as the Australia Day Festival and community artworks such as the Edwards Arcade mural. On Tuesday 23 September, the market will celebrate 10 years with a party featuring a jumping castle, trader snd stallholder specials, music, and activities for children. Come along between 10am and 3pm to share in the celebration. Plus, on Friday 19 September something unusual will be occuring along Pier Street. Want to know what it is? There’s only one way to find out - drop by on Friday.

From your street to the shops There is still time to participate in a drop-in session with sessions taking place at Hobsons Bay Civic Centre on 17 September, South Kingsville Community Centre on 22 September and Laverton Community Hub on 25 September. Alternatively, join the conversation online at participate.hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au. What is From your street to the shops? It’s asking you to look at Council from a big picture perspective, to think about neighbourhood character and activity centres in Hobsons Bay.

Swooping season It’s swooping season again and some birds will use this method to warn you away from their nests. Try to avoid nesting areas where possible, but if you must pass them it’s preferable to move quickly without running. Wearing a hat or walking in a group is also advisable. Magpies tend to be the main offenders but it’s to their credit that, despite their swooping tendencies, they still polled as Australia’s second favourite bird in a recent Birdlife survey. Other birds that may swoop include masked lapwings, butcherbirds, kookaburras and red wattlebirds. If you do stumble across an area of swooping birds please let others know.

Planning permit application Application PA1428818

Archsign Pty Ltd has lodged an application for the construction of six double storey dwellings at 13 Junction Street, Newport. The application and supporting documentation can be inspected at the Hobsons Bay Civic Centre 8.30am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, or via Greenlight, Council’s online permit management system, at www.hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au. Any person who may be affected by the granting of the permit may object or make other submissions to Council in writing, including the reasons for an objection and stating how the objector would be affected by 1 October, 2014. Objectors will be advised of the decision. For further information, please contact Verity Games on 9932 1000.

Future fashion stars from across the north-west were thrust into the spotlight at the finals of Fashion Awards Australia at Taylors Lakes last Friday. Students from around the northern and western suburbs, Geelong and Ballarat were among the budding designers who showcased their creative flair by designing chic day wear, glamorous evening gowns and quirky wearable art. Among the winners was Stefani Shabo, of Penola Catholic College, Broadmeadows, whose black and white cardboard dress (pictured) won the year 11-12 ‘recycled wearable art’ category.

Maribyrnong council will slash the cost of parking around Victoria University’s Footscray Park campus to $5 a day, down from $8.70, to match the fee charged by VU in its car parks.

The butt of a bad joke

Calls for new truck curfew

By Goya Dmytryshchak An Altona resident whose family is opposed to smoking received a $590 fine after someone called the EPA hotline to report that a female passenger threw a lit cigarette out his car window. Anthony Ang says he may contest the infringement in court so he can learn the identify of his accuser and hopefully deter others from making “false allegations”. Last financial year, the EPA collected more than $4 million from litter fines after issuing 12,859 infringement notices. On the day of the alleged offence, September 2, Mr Ang and his medical doctor wife Linda had taken their four-year-old son to a GP with a high fever. They have never smoked, “detest second-hand smoke” and did not drive in Rayner Street, where the littering was reported to have occurred. After posting about his plight on Facebook last week, more than a dozen people commented that they had received such fines for offences they did not commit. One man said he received five fines in one day and spent a year in court fighting them. No verification of a complainant’s identity is required by the EPA. Mr Ang said the EPA policy was vulnerable to abuse. “The reporter can provide a fabricated name, contact details and allegations,” he said. “The reporter is not required to produce any evidence, such as photos, videos, third-party witnesses … to substantiate the allegation. “It becomes the responsibility of the accused to prove their innocence. “Pranksters, people who bear a grudge, people who have nothing better to do, racially motivated bigots … will simply get away

Anthony and Linda Ang with Aaron, 4, and Angeline, 6. (Wayne Hawkins)

scot-free without any penalty. Worse still, there is a segment of the population – such as the less-informed, more elderly, the non-Englishliterate – who will simply pay the fines although they are innocent.” EPA spokeswoman Rosanna Bonaccurso said anyone could make an online litter report by providing the accused’s car registration number and vehicle description. “Information provided is validated

NEWS

against the VicRoads database to identify the potential offender,” she said. “The reporter must also provide their full name/contact details upon lodging a litter report. “If at any point the notice recipient is under the impression that the report is vexatious, then they may express that by completing a statutory declaration.”

Hobsons Bay council is likely to ask VicRoads to impose a formal truck curfew in Spotswood, with trucks that have been banished from Yarraville moving into the neighbouring suburb. Cr Paul Morgan told last week’s council meeting there had been more truck traffic in Spotswood since VicRoads started clamping down on trucks breaking curfews in surrounding areas. “A council truck curfew is in place on Hudsons Road, Spotswood, and apparently since some other truck curfew enforcement activities have been taking place in other areas … the amount of trucks travelling down Hudson Road at night has increased dramatically,” Cr Morgan said. VicRoads implemented evening and weekend truck curfews on sections of Francis Street and Somerville Road more than 10 years ago. About 6000 trucks use Francis Street every day. Three years ago, Hobsons Bay council changed the Hudsons Road curfew to match restrictions in Francis Street. Truck drivers have been ignoring the Hobsons Bay curfews, which are not enforceable by law. Council infrastructure and city services director Sherry Clarke recommended that truck traffic and speed counts be undertaken in Hudsons Road, with a view to asking VicRoads to impose a formal curfew. Inner west freight traffic could worsen dramatically, with the port’s annual volumes forecast to double to five million containers by 2025.

There are plenty of incredible in-store sales and special offers from some of your favourite local businesses on offer too. Williamstown 27 Gellibrand Street, 3016 Williams Real Estate: 9397 2000 Auction: October 4 at 11.30am

Price: $1.55m – $1.62m

There’s so much more to this Williamstown property than meets the eye. Although the facade shows this to be a period house, the completely renovated interior tells a different story. Polished floating floorboards start from the entry and flow down the hallway into the living hub. Through double doors with frosted glass panes, the spacious main bedroom (left of entry) has a walk-in wardrobe and fully tiled en suite with twin square basins in a slick stone-topped vanity unit, and a walk-in shower. Two more good-sized bedrooms across the hall have built-in wardrobes and are serviced by the fully tiled main bathroom with stone-topped vanity unit and a shower-bath combo with a glass screen.

4

The dynamic and exciting design of this house provides the flexibility to use up to five areas as separate living, dining, bedroom, office and retreat areas. Light floods through from a void above the kitchen creating a light and airy space with high ceilings and large windows at eye level. The white cabinetry is accented with marble on the benchtops and island, and an exposed Tassie oak beam and polished timber floorboards add warmth to the palette. A television is recessed into the wall in the meals area for an extra touch of luxury so the chef in the family doesn’t miss their favourite show while they cook. Next up is the step-down family room with a large remote-controlled

2

entertainment system for music and movies. The all-white room, anchored by polished concrete, has an exposed distressed-steel beam adding to its trendy industrial design. Double doors open to an outdoor undercover entertainment area with built-in barbecue and kitchen that serves the dreamy poolside. A floor-to-ceiling glass sliding wall opens to provide seamless indoor/outdoor living and entertainment. Upstairs, the first floor mezzanine level is completely dedicated to the home office or study which an entrepreneur with a home-based business will love. On the third level, bay views from the retreat (or bedroom) with private balcony are ready to be soaked up. Esther Lauaki

tech talk

By Rod Easdown Have a look on YouTube for the latest prank LG has pulled to publicise its big ultra high definition television. It has replaced a window in a skyscraper with the television. As job candidates sit through their interviews, they see in the “window” a fiery comet crash into the city, the shockwave racing towards them. Most wind up on the floor. If you haven’t seen a UHD telly, wander into a big electronics store. When you see a screen that stops you cold, there it is. These things are amazing – the picture is so sharp you can see the filigree in a resort hotel’s balcony rails clear across a shimmering lake. It’s breathtaking. And prices aren’t bad for new tech. For between five and six grand you can take your pick of 165-centimetre televisions from any of the big brands. Lesser brands are half that. They come much bigger too, but they don’t go much smaller than 140 centimetres or so because below that size it’s hard to pick the improvement over regular full high definition screens. You stand there, quietly spellbound, and start doing the sums, a salesperson murmuring siren-like in your ear. But there is a catch and you won’t discover it until you get home. You’re never going to get picture quality like you saw in the store. Well, not for a while anyway. What you saw was a demonstration reel specially recorded in UHD. Currently demo reels are about the only

things that have been recorded in UHD. There are no UHD movies in the shops (there are a few Blu-rays that have been mastered to perform at their best on a UHD screen, but the native recording is still regular FHD – full high definition), there are no UHD broadcasts and no UHD downloads. UHD is four times sharper than FHD so demands four times the data handling. Recording it is expensive and complex. Once recorded, anything movie-length won’t fit on a Blu-ray disc. If and when native UHD becomes available, it will probably be provided on USB or by download. After 3D broadcasts fell flat as a tack, it’s unlikely television stations will start UHD broadcasts any time soon. Raise this with salespeople and they’ll say the television upscales the image – whether it be broadcast, DVD, Blu-ray or YouTube – to UHD. But while upscaling works with varying success, it’s still not as good as those demo reels. The question you should ask yourself, however, is this; how much definition do you need? Look at the big FHD tellies on display. Their resolution is still terrific. You can get software that brings out their best anywhere. The killer point is they cost a lot less than UHD. By the way, when you’re investigating UHD, you’ll also hear about 4K. It’s exactly the same thing. Some manufacturers call it UHD and others, ever helpful, call it 4K.

Lions’ roar is too loud for Spotty By Lance Jenkinson Deer Park is the first club in the history of Western Region Football League division 1 to land the premiership in an undefeated season. The Lions are the kings of the jungle for the second year running after their star-studded line-up obliterated Spotswood by 77 points in a desperately lopsided grand final at Chirnside Park in Werribee on Saturday. The Lions blitzed from the outset, recording an incredible 48 scoring shots to 21. Lions veteran Luke Summers said he was rapt to be part of “history in the making”. “This is the ultimate – an unbelievable feeling,” he said. The last time Deer Park achieved a premiership repeat was way back in 1939-41, when it won three in a row under the club’s former club, ICI. This was a much easier grand final for the Lions to win than last year’s one-point cliffhanger win over Spotswood, which has lost the past three season deciders. The Lions have claimed four premierships from eight consecutive grand final appearances. The tipping point on Saturday came at the 19-minute mark of the third quarter when Shylo Smith booted the goal of the game from tight up on the boundary at the swimming pool end with barely a flicker of daylight between the goal posts. That put the Lions 47 points up and broke the spirit of the Woodsmen, who until then had been staging a mini-fightback early in the third term. The Lions might have had the game under lock and key before half-time had they not missed a bevy of scoring opportunities. “If we had’ve kicked straight, I don’t know what the record was for a grand final win, but we probably would’ve broken the record,” Summers said. Spotswood booted the first goal of the game, fittingly through onballer David Iaccarino. Iaccarino would have five goals by game’s end to be the clear stand-out player on his side. While the Woodsmen had early success at the stoppages through ruckman Murray Boyd and onballers Iaccarino, Shaun Ross and Tom Langlands, they were getting beaten in all other areas of the ground. The Woodsmen’s defensive unit was jittery from the first bounce, turning the ball over with dinky short passes and seeing the ball returned with interest. The Lions did not find their range in the first quarter but ran riot in the second with nine goals to two. The Lion machine was firing on all cylinders from the second term onwards, with winners in blue and gold guernseys all over the park. As it so often has, it started in the middle with ruckman Chris Stewart, one of the great players in his position in the modern era of the western suburbs competition. Stewart fed the ball on a platter to runners Smith, Jack Purton-Smith and Rhett King. Smith finished with five goals from the centre – an incredible performance that on another day might have won him the player-of-the-game medal. Ben Foley and Jackson Barling were steady in the key defensive posts, while Shaun Harrison was superb with his intercept marking and rebound out of the back half. Daniel Cooper and James Condos were a constant headache for the Woodsmen defenders. But the Herb Pascarl Medal honours for best-on-ground went to Kwame McHarg. He finished with seven goals and had barely a scratch on him because his dancing feet made it nigh on impossible for the Woodsmen to lay a finger on him. Summers, so often the one tagged in previous years, is a luxury for Deer Park player-coach Marc Bullen. While the opposition has been putting work into the Lions’ former AFL crew of Bullen, Ryan Houlihan, Ryan Hargrave, Bret Thornton and Brent Guerra, along with the host of

It was an extra special day for Summers, who missed last year’s grand final through suspension. The 33-year-old was the captain of the Lions’ side that went undefeated in 2009 to win the division 2 flag. A former junior at the club, Summers returned to achieve what he described as “the ultimate” of winning a division 1 premiership. “I knew [club president] Mark McGoldrick pretty well – he coached me when I was 16 years old,” Summers said. “He asked me to come back to the club when it was in a bad way in division 2. “And here I am today, the club is back where it should be and I’m stoked. “I’m just rapt to get an A-grade premiership, that’s what I came to the club for and it finally paid off. The turnaround is unbelievable.”

Spotty feels the pain again By Lance Jenkinson Spotswood is hurting after losing for a third successive season on the Western Region Football League’s biggest stage. This grand final defeat was more cut and dried than the one-point heartbreaks of the previous two seasons, but it was no less painful. The Woodsmen were in their eighth consecutive grand final but were on the receiving end of a 77-point mauling from Deer Park, which sent out one of the most accomplished sides the league has seen. The utter devastation suffered by the Woodsmen 12 months ago was replaced by resignation about how this decider would end from about the midway point of the third quarter. Veteran Woodsmen defender Mick Lewis told Star Weekly his side wasn’t allowed to produce its usual free-flowing, hard-running football, being stifled by the well-drilled experienced opposition. “[Deer Park] have the skills and maturity to move it around and run the ball, but at times they hold up the pace and work it back and forth across their half back line to find a target,” he said. “That hurt us, they picked us apart a bit. When we started to get a bit of run, they just held up the pace.” If you think the Woodsmen are on the way down, it might be a tad premature. They fielded a large number of young players with bright futures against the battle-hardened Lions. They also won the under-18 division 1 premiership.

The Woodsmen have a sound veteran presence, but Lewis believes the middle tier – ages 24-27 – is lacking in depth and needs to be addressed. “The future is very bright,” Lewis said. “Probably half [of the grand final] side would’ve been under 23, but there’s that gap in the middle,” he said.

The Woodsmen fielded 15 homegrown players in the grand final, including Tom Langlands, who took the reins as player-coach this season. David Iaccarino starred on the losing side in the grand final. The starting onballer ran himself into the ground and finished with five goals from midfield. “Throughout the season he’s shown why he should’ve been drafted with his ability to extract the ball and get it going forward,” Lewis said. Will Langlands is the only player to feature in all eight of the Woodsmen’s grand finals. “He epitomises Spotswood,” Lewis said. “What he’s done is amazing.”

Invicta: quite a bit of Bentley The Invicta had a relatively short production life. Introduced in the 1920s, the cars were hand-built in Surrey, England, until 1933. It would appear that Noel Macklin, who conceived the design, was very impressed with Bentley cars as the Invicta had a Bentley-like appearance in more ways than one. If you compared the front-end styling and even the use of riveted bonnet panels, there was a strong similarity between the two makes. By 1930 there were two versions of the 4.5 Invicta available. These were the high-chassis A-type and the much-lowered, charismatic S-type sports car. Both models carried price tags similar to that of the similarly-styled Bentleys. In the original models, a Coventry-Climax engine was used, but shortly after its introduction, a more rugged six-cylinder, overhead valve engine fitted with two horizontal SU carburettors and developing 86kW was purchased from Henry Meadows of Wolverhampton. This power unit, which came in a variety of sizes, including the 4.5-litre, was also supplied to Lagonda and other vehicle manufactures. An engine of this type was a good choice as it had loads of torque, as did similar engines of this era, giving the car lots of appeal to those who could afford it. With a top speed approaching 150km/h, the Invicta met most enthusiasts’ needs. Still, it had a few drawbacks: the half-elliptical front and rear suspension gave a rock-hard ride, while the drum brakes, operated by a rod system, often failed to perform adequately. Invicta died through lack of custom. Of the 500-or-so 4.5-litre Invictas made, only 77 were the smart-looking S-type sports car.
