Health Minister David Davis said the state government had provided up to $9.7 million to build the 12-chair dental clinic as part of cohealth’s new community health centre in Paisley Street. By Goya Dmytryshchak The Greens have emerged as the only political party committed to duplicating the Altona Loop to ease problems on the Werribee train line. As Altona Greens candidate Chris de Bono prepares to launch his state election campaign at Altona station on Thursday, commuters are urging the major parties to also support duplication of the single track affecting three stations on the Werribee line – Seaholme, Altona and Westona. Altona Loop Group spokeswoman Jennifer Williams said candidates were being asked to commit to partial duplication in non-residential areas within the next term ‘‘to stop all the unnecessary and unacceptable delays, cancellations, dumpings and bypasses that occur because Altona is a single track”. “The loop group doesn’t want to wait 20 years for a reliable service,” Ms Williams said. “Metro continues to use the Altona Loop as a safety valve to ensure on-time running of the Werribee line by dumping us at Newport. This is totally unacceptable.” Mr de Bono said Altona Loop services were so bad that the line’s commuters were the most dissatisfied on the metropolitan network. “The Greens will duplicate the Altona Loop single track as far as possible at an estimated cost of $13 million,’’ he said. “This equates to just 0.07 per cent of what the Napthine Liberal government wants to spend on the East West toll road, a project which won’t even fix traffic congestion.”

Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Andrew Elsbury said the Coalition would announce its policies closer to November’s election. “In August 2014, there were only 18 occasions when a bypass occurred, less than one bypass per weekday,” he said. “This figure has plummeted from the terrible figures under the previous Labor government which saw some months record more than 100 occasions.” Altona MP and opposition public transport spokeswoman Jill Hennessy said Labor would “have a close look at the Altona Loop, together with further public transport proposals”. “Labor believes doubling the size of the city loop by building Melbourne Metro will ease travel times for those travelling across the city from Melbourne’s west.”
A man performed an express delivery beside the West Gate Freeway near Altona North after his partner couldn’t make it to hospital in time to give birth to their second daughter. Josh Dean said the couple were on their way to the Royal Women’s Hospital when he pulled over 300 metres from the Millers Road exit about 9.30pm on Saturday after his partner, Courtesy Hove, said she needed to “push now”. “I just made it off the M80 and had to pull over into the emergency lane when she said, ‘I’m going to have the baby’. “I had to call triple-0 and tried to get the ambulance to come, but I couldn’t wait for that … the person over the phone had to talk me through it, how to use my hands and how to catch the baby.” Mr Dean said that despite being nervous, he was able to focus. “I remained calm … the ambulance arrived 15 minutes after the birth,” he said. Ms Hove, who was energetically roaming her maternity room 13 hours after the birth, said she felt great. “It was very quick – one push,” she said. “In the future, we’ll drive past the freeway and say, ‘Look, that’s where you were born’,” Ms Hove said. The couple, who have a 14-month daughter, Egypt, named the baby Sierra – after the country Sierra Leone – in honour of Ms Hove’s African descent. Catherine Zielinski

Porters power across the line By Lance Jenkinson Newport has risen from the ashes to claim its 23rd Lacrosse Victoria women’s state league title in controversial fashion. The Porters came back from three goals down with 10 minutes to go to topple highly fancied rivals Footscray 7-6 in the grand final at Percy Treyvaud Memorial Park on Saturday. Late drama surrounded the match-winning goal from Porters’ attacker Elise Hussey. With two minutes to go, Hussey wound up so hard that her goal rebounded off the back frame of the goal net and back into the field of play. The umpires deemed it to have crossed the line, but the Footscray players disputed the call. The goal, Hussey’s third and most important for the game, completed a fairytale comeback for the Porters, who scored four goals in eight minutes to chase down the Bulldogs and claim the premiership. Porters coach Sue Sofarnos told Star Weekly the Hussey shot was debatable, depending on your point of view. “It was a bit of a controversial one, but the umpires instantly called it a goal,” she said. “It was a really exciting end to the game and you didn’t know who had it won until the last seconds.” This was the Porters’ 41st consecutive top-flight grand final, but they went in as underdogs having lost to the Bulldogs in their three previous encounters. The game was going to script with Footscray bursting to a 6-3 lead. But the Porters refused to concede and launched a stunning recovery in the dying minutes. “We were only in front in the first two minutes of the game and we weren’t in front again until the last two minutes,” Sofarnos said. “I’m just proud of the girls and the way
