This month you may notice a few less cars and a few more pedestrians. Walk to School month is an excellent initiative, encouraging children to walk to scholl and to think about air pollution, traffic congestion and healthy living. Nine Schools in Hobsons Bay are taking up the challenge: Altona Meadows Primary School, Altona Green Primary School, Newport Lakes Primary School, Newport Gardens Primary School, St. Mary’s Primary School (Williamstown), St. Mary’s School (Altona), Laverton P-12 College, Queen of Peace Parish Primary School and Seabrook Primary School. If you happen to be driving past a school, please pay careful attention to the speed limits and the children walking.
For dog walkers wanting to take their dogs out on the sand, Burns Reserve beach will be closed between now and the end of October while dredging takes place at Altona Safe Harbour. The dredging is an annual activity that has been approved by the Department of Environment and Primary Industries and the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA). It’s carried out each year to maintain a desired depth to ensure boats have a safe passage into the harbour. During this time we urge boat owners to demonstrate extreme caution when approaching the dredger and obey all directions given by the dredger operator. An alternative dog off leash area is available at Doug Grant Reserve, Altona Foreshore.
Council has written to the Department of Health and we are asking that they take the lead and commit to a long-term study. Greater analysis of the health impacts is needed and we want to see the EPA enforce the current penalties for companies that breach their licensing agreements.

Paint the town purple Between 13 and 17 October Pier Street will be plush with purple, the colour of the Cancer Council’s Relay for Life event. The October paint-a-thon will raise awareness about cancer at the same time businesses raise money for the national charity. Hobsons Bay’s Relay for Life event will take place on 21 February 2015 at Newport Park Athletics Facility and teams can register at relayforlife.org.au

Laverton community hub cafe There is good news to report from the Laverton Community Hub. Saffron Café and its healthy delights will be open for business from Monday 3 November. The café, run by the Wyndham Community Education Centre, will boast a menu of fresh ingredients and also a catering option for meetings and functions. Open Monday to Friday between 8am and 4pm, the café will operate as a social enterprise providing training and employment opportunities for local people.
Railway Avenue tree removal Thirty five sugar gums (Eucalyptus cladocalyx) in Railway Avenue have been earmarked as safety hazards and will be removed shortly. Years of indiscriminate
lopping has led to poorly attached trunks and branches. The removal of the trees will begin on 11 October with works occurring at the weekend to keep interruptions to a minimum. The sugar gums will be replaced with the summerblooming lightwood (Acacia implexa) which you may have noticed from recent plantings in Hillman Street, Heffernan Street and Tyquin Street. Over the last decade there have been over 1,300 street trees planted in Laverton.
A B Shaw Reserve We have started preparation work for the oval redevelopment by removing a number of trees at A B Shaw Reserve. This will allow for the enlargement of Oval 2 and alleviating pressures on surrounding fields. To offset the

tree removal, double the amount of trees will be planted during the 2015 autumn planting season. We aim for the preparation work to be finished by the end of October and the redevelopment will begin in November. Fire’s encore performance
A Newport lawyer and Muslim community leader has warned of growing divisions between the Islamic and broader communities. Fatoum Souki has been asked to advise Victoria Police in the wake of the fatal shooting of Numan Haider on September 23. The 18-year-old was shot by police outside Endeavour Hills police station after injuring two officers with a knife. Ms Souki spoke to Star Weekly just before the Senate cleared the first tranche of the federal government’s tougher counter-terrorism laws. Ms Souki said the Muslim community was feeling besieged by growing suspicion. “Lebanon’s been a war-torn country for years,” Ms Souki said. “One of my family members is returning home to visit his ill father. “He has $1000 on him because he wants money when he’s there and the ATM is four hours from his village. “He has a little beard. Suddenly, this is raising suspicion left, right and centre.” Ms Souki said no Muslim would ever say it wasn’t OK for the government to protect the safety of Australia’s citizens. “We’re the citizens and we want to be safe, but do it within a realistic means where you’re not isolating a whole community for a threat that’s not real,” she said. Ms Souki questioned why Port Arthur mass murderer Martin Bryant was never defined by religion. “Was he atheist, was he Protestant, was he Christian?” Ms Souki said. “We’re the hated ones at the moment. “My community, more than ever, is being forced to define what makes us Australian because we feel that we have to justify ourselves.

Residents in and around Laverton North were urged to stay indoors on Sunday afternoon after a large fire broke out at a tissue factory – almost a year to the day after a similar blaze. Sunday’s fire at Encore Tissue in Gilbertson Road was fanned by high winds, which spread smoke over Laverton North, Altona Meadows, Altona North and Altona. Residents were told to avoid the area and stay indoors. MFB spokesman Keith Robinson said firefighters were called after reports of a fire in the factory roof. “The first crews reported flames and smoke issuing from the roof and called for extra appliances,” he said. “CFA also responded to assist. “Smoke from the fire was visible from a long distance and a community warning was sent to alert surrounding areas. “The full extent of damage is yet to be assessed.” Seven fire trucks and two aerial units were sent to the factory and it took 48 firefighters about an hour to bring the blaze under control. A factory worker said the fire appeared worse than it was because of billowing smoke. The fire was accidental, being caused by a build-up of lint on top of a heat exchanger. Store to open with a bang

More in store for ’Scray By Benjamin Millar The new Footscray Plaza will be officially opened on Saturday after more than a year under wraps. Long-time tenants Kmart and Coles have returned to the plaza in new stores and are joined by new retailers Bakers Delight, Priceline Pharmacy and Liquorland. The 3300-square-metre Coles store reopened
last Wednesday. Maribyrnong mayor Grant Miles said the plaza would be a catalyst for further rejuvenation in Footscray, creating new jobs and bringing in more people. “There will be increased trading and more people residing in inner Footscray, so the area around here will be activated, greatly improving safety at night,” he said. Western Bulldogs legend Doug Hawkins and Cr Miles will open the multimillion-dollar
plaza redevelopment at 11am on Saturday, lighting up Victoria’s largest LED-programmed steel light sculpture. The artwork, by Melbourne artist Matthew Harding, will adorn the facade of the new No.18 Albert residential development above the plaza. The 240-square-metre artwork will be programmed to change throughout the year and mark special events such as New Year’s Eve.

Altona’s relocated Bunnings Warehouse opened on Monday, but its official opening on Friday night will include a fireworks display and in-store celebrations. The $47 million, 17,000-square metre warehouse – double the size of its old premises in Millers Road – is the anchor store for a new $30 million retail centre at the corner of Millers and Ross roads. Developer Folkestone says the centre on the old Cabot site will include Officeworks, JB Hi-Fi, Home, Repco, a pet store and vet, and a small cafe. Folkestone is selling 8063 square metres of land to Aldi for a supermarket adjoining the stage one development. The $20-$30 million second stage is expected to have a mix of employment and business uses, while stage three will have a mix of uses. Bunnings manager Patrick Neicho says more than 230 staff will be employed at the new warehouse. Meanwhile, a new $50 million Bunnings Warehouse is expected to open in West Footscray by mid 2015. About 310 jobs will be created during construction and more than 180 when it opens. The official opening of Altona Bunnings is from 5-9pm on Friday and will feature a jumping castle, slushies, popcorn and a live performance by children’s character Dora the Explorer at 6.30pm. The fireworks light up at 8pm. Bunnings property general manager Andrew Marks said options were being evaluated for the old Altona warehouse.

Garden grows friendship By Benjamin Millar Migrants and their neighbours are being brought together around a new Footscray community garden. The African Australian Community Centre has joined with Victoria University and other community partners to create the garden as part of the Footscray FOODpath project. It’s intended the garden will encourage African refugees and asylum-seekers to be involved in growing and harvesting food, but it will be open to people of any background. Victoria University food expert Isabelle
de Solier says Footscray’s first community garden recognises the vital role food plays in healthy living and strong social connections. “It’s called the Footscray FOODpath because it’s about creating a pathway to food security, health and nutrition, skill development, community connection and social inclusion,” Dr de Solier said. “Food brings people together. Everyone eats, and food is a great way to learn about other cultures.” The African Australian Community Centre is providing the land for the community garden at 32 Pickett Street as well as garden beds, while
Victoria University students will help run the garden and present workshops. Dr de Solier is urging people to vote for the project in the state government Back to Earth project competition, to help fund other essentials such as soil, plants and tools. An initiative that led to mental health clinicians joining forces with police to respond to mental health call-outs is to get a funding boost. The Mid-West Police and Clinician Emergency Response (PACER) initiative – a partnership of Western Health, Brimbank and Melton police, Macedon Ranges and North Western Melbourne Medicare Local, NorthWestern Mental Health, Melbourne Health and Ambulance Victoria – will share in $2.729 million of state government funding. The program, launched last month, allows police to call on the PACER unit when responding to any situation where someone is experiencing a mental health crisis. It will also link patients to relevant support services. State Health Minister Mary Wooldridge said the extra funding would deliver a more targeted and timely response to patients needing urgent medical health support and reduce pressure on police, ambulances and emergency departments. “These initiatives will ensure that people with a mental illness receive the most appropriate and least restrictive care in a timely manner,” she said. Western Health is one of 12 mental health services to get the funding, which is part of a $15.1 million state government promise to roll out a mental health and police response program across Victoria over the next four years. New, cheeky chapter A monster with a whole lot of love for the world will be unleashed in Footscray next week. Footscray writer and educator Richard McLean says Grogan the Monster in... What Do You Love? grew out of a project that formed part of his master of education studies at Victoria University. McLean is a mental health advocate best known for his autobiography Recovered, Not Cured, A Journey Through Schizophrenia. He said the creative process helped him through a difficult period of study by putting him in touch with his inner child. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A lot of my artwork is very dark or morose or moody and this was an opportunity to digress from
all of that,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Grogan is a very grateful little monster, focusing on gratitude, positive feelings and love. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a little bit cheeky, I think itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a fun book for both kids and adults.â&#x20AC;? The book took nearly two years to put together, each illustration painstakingly created via computer tablet. But the labour of love is in aid of a good cause: 25 per cent of all sales will go to the Royal Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospital. By Liam Twomey Brayden Monk has enjoyed an excellent 12 months. After missing out on the Western Jets squad in 2013, the teenager returned with a vengeance this year, fighting his way into the TAC Cup club’s top echelon of players. The reward for his hard work came last week when the teenager claimed the Western Jets’ best and fairest award. Monk won the Barry Round Medal with 214 votes from teammates Liam Duggan and Billy Myers, who finished second and third with 187 votes and 167 respectively. The 18-year-old was a picture of consistency throughout the season, named among the Jets’ best players in 12 of his 17 matches, including the club’s elimination final loss to Dandenong. Western Jets region manager Shane Sexton was full of praise for Monk. “I can remember watching him run around in an under-16 Western Region Football League final … he was a good little player at the time,” Sexton said. “You just sort of wondered if he would be able to make it at his size “He really didn’t get much of a look in last year, and in fact he wasn’t on the list at all. He was in our Majak Daw multicultural squad and played some super footy. “After he had showed that dedication, that perseverance, that desperation to succeed, we gave him a look in. “All of those characteristics have shown through again this year and he’s been an outstanding player.” For Duggan, second-placing in the Barry Round medal caps off an outstanding final year of junior football. The Melton resident was a member of the AFL AIS Academy, played in the under-18 national championships, and played and was integral to the Jets reaching the finals. “His [Duggan’s] second-place finish is a terrific reflection of the season he has had,” Sexton said. While the TAC Cup season might be over, there is no slowing down for the Jets’ top-line players, who have turned their attention to the AFL draft. Six Jets will be put on show for AFL recruiters at the AFL draft combine next month before November’s national draft.

Western Jets region manager Shane Sexton says the success of Adam Kennedy should be a lesson for all the region’s footballers. Kennedy notched up his 50th game for Greater Western Sydney this season. But it hasn’t always been smooth sailing for the defender, who was initially overlooked by AFL club recruiters. Kennedy was on hand at the Jets’ best and fairest function last week. “We interviewed Adam on the night and talked to him about his career,” Sexton said. “He didn’t play at the Western Jets in the under 15s or 16s. “As a 17-year-old, he started to show his athleticism and running capacity. “As an 18-year-old, he had a solid year. Some clubs were talking about making him a rookie-listed player. That didn’t eventuate. “He came back as a 19-year-old and had an outstanding year, got himself drafted and three years later he has played in excess of 50 games of AFL football. “There is a lesson there – that if you believe you’re good enough and you want to play the game, persevere and be the best that you can be.” Liam Twomey
