Anjo student exchange

The new My Smart Garden website is now live. My Smart Garden has been running for three years and has over 1200 members. It runs workshops to help homegrowers confront the many misconceptions and challenges with growing your own food. The new website features a gardeners’ forum, archived workshop notes and case studies. Workshops are run all year round on topics such as creating your own compost or installing hands-on drip irrigation. Feedback from the workshops has been excellent with the average workshop rating at least nine out of ten. You can check out the new website at www.mysmartgarden.org.au

In July 2015, students and chaperones will spend two weeks in Hobsons Bay’s sister city Anjo in Japan. The Hobsons Bay International Friendship Association is looking for students who are between the ages of14 and 17 years and live in Hobsons Bay. The successful applicants will be required to pay $1,000 towards the program. Chaperones are also invited. To be eligible you must live or work in Hobsons Bay, and show an ability to communicate with and supervise students. The Association will pay the successful applicant’s return airfare and arrange home stay accommodation for the duration of the visit. The closing date is Friday 31 October and application forms can be obtained from John Whittington on 0402 520 424.

UN worker leaves fear behind By Goya Dmytryshchak A Williamstown woman who feared for her life while working with the United Nations in Afghanistan has helped a media colleague from Kabul flee the Taliban and gain refuge in Australia. Jillian Hocking, who worked in a UN compound with other media, sponsored her colleague Abdullah Alikhil to become an Australian resident. Ms Hocking says she remembers the fear of working in the compound where, at times, her only mission was to stay alive. She said one night, the compound came under direct threat of being bombed. “Four suicide bombers were arrested in Kabul and they admitted they had planned a huge attack on our compound with up to 15 suicide bombers and two cars laden with explosives. “It would have been the biggest attack on a compound in Afghanistan. “I was thinking of my kids, really, and thought, I need to be alive for them. “That night, we were told not to go to the bunker … no one was to sleep in the bunker unless we were told, grab your bags, there’s an attack. “Most of us slept in our rooms. I didn’t sleep in my bed because I was told if they [Taliban] come into your room and feel the bed and it’s warm, they know you’re around. “I’m quite small and I worked out I could fit inside my suitcase which was on top of the cupboard. I could climb in and do it up, and that was my hiding spot if there was an attack.” Mr Alikhil said he was under daily threat because of his reporting on civilian casualties and human rights abuses.

“UN were seen the same as international forces because we were giving mandates to the International Security Assistance Force and also we were closely working with the government. “I got direct calls from the anti-government elements when I was reporting on civilian casualties because usually they were responsible for more than 70 or 75 per cent [of casualties], but they were claiming, ‘no we’re not and you are giving a false figure’. “On a daily basis, I thought I might be kidnapped, I might be shot.” Jillian Hocking works for the Afghan Australian Development Organisation. A confronting play tackling domestic violence has won a Kingsville writer a place in the Melbourne Writers’ Theatre one-act play competition. Paul Mitchell’s Ragdoll was one of five plays selected for a three-week season this month as part of the Darklight series of one-act plays. Mitchell said it was satisfying to know the challenging play would make it to a stage after four years in the works. “I was talking with Helen Garner a lot while she was writing This House of Grief, her book about the trial of Robert Farquharson, who killed his children by driving them into a dam near Winchelsea,” he said. “I was also working on Ragdoll at the time, a play that tries through art to understand domestic violence that most

By Lance Jenkinson Williamstown Little Athletics Centre is gearing up for its 47th season. It’s one of the oldest clubs in Victoria and shows no signs of weakening, with more than 300 youngsters enrolled in track and field this summer. “We were the ninth of 104 centres to be created in Victoria,” WLAC president John Gilbert said. “We started way back in 1967, so we’ve got a good history of little athletics in Williamstown. “Our role is to provide athletic events to the children aged five to 15 and help with the transition from little athletics through to seniors.” Gilbert has enjoyed an 11-year association with Williamstown, starting when his two children began competing. His passion for the club has led to his holding various positions on the committee. He’s in his third year as president. “It’s one of those sports where parents can really be close to their kids, watch them compete and develop and take an interest in their sport, rather than just dump them off and go for a coffee, read a newspaper and pick them up at the end,” Gilbert said. “It’s pretty enriching in terms of being involved in their kids’ development and seeing them learn and improve, and be on hand when they produce a good result.” Little Athletics clubs rely heavily on volunteers, especially parents. “We depend on the parents each week to successfully run the program,” Gilbert said. “The duties aren’t too onerous. We’re talking about raking the sand in the long jump pit, measuring distances and starting and recording times.”

Werribee Districts onballer Matt Dean has taken out the Barry Priest Medal for best and fairest in Western Region Football League’s division 1. Parkside captain Chris Muratore was adjudged champion player of division 2, capping a memorable season in which his side took out the premiership. Wyndham Suns will become the 25th senior WRFL club after being granted a spot in division 3 next season.

Williamstown posted 176 on the opening day of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association season against Balwyn at Williamstown Cricket Ground. Gilbert says the club is served well by an all-weather synthetic track kept in good nick by the local council. “We’ve got some great facilities.” While there’s a focus on fitness and fun, the club always encourages its young members to aim for regional and state competitions.

There’s also a major focus on helping the kids in the older age groups make the jump from little athletics to senior competition. “We need to focus on both the younger ones from five or six through to 10 or 11, but also the older ones just before they turn to senior athletics,” Gilbert said. “It’s a different sort of competition in seniors and it can be a little bit intimidating.” The Williamstown centre will hold a come and try day on Saturday from 8.30am.
