New Mayor Cr Colleen Gates stands alongside new Dputy Mayor Cr Paul Morgan
The team at Captain’s Retreat - Emma, Susan, Tina, Karin and Melissa - celebrate their RACV award
Mayor and Deputy election
Captain’s Retreat
On Friday 7 November, Cr Colleen Gates was unanimously elected as Mayor of Hobsons Bay by her fellow Councillors with Cr Paul Morgan unanimously elected Deputy Mayor.
The winner of the RACV Tourism Awards, People’s Choice Award for Guest Satisfaction, has been announced – and this is not the first time The Captain’s Retreat has won, picking up the same award back in 2011. The aim of the Captain’s Retreat, located on The Strand, is to provide the visitor with a relaxed and comfortable ‘home away from home’ experience. Imagine this. A guest wanders into the communal area. They mention it’s their birthday and, within minutes, another guest has got out their guitar and begun serenading them with a Spanish ‘Happy Birthday’. This has been known at the Williamstown B&B. The heritage listed house which has five rooms (all with ensuite) was originally built in 1862 and then extended for a sea captain in 1880.
Cr Gates said she believed 2015 would be an exciting year for Hobsons Bay and that Council would focus on delivering the results that support their strategic vision. The new Mayor said she looked forward to working with her fellow Councillors to deliver the upgrades, projects and services most in need for Hobsons Bay. “I will also continue to advocate, to get our big community issues on the agenda of decision makers. These include economic development and better public transport.” She also acknowledged the outgoing Mayor Cr Sandra Wilson for a year of hard work and dedication. Cr Morgan, also elected in 2012, says he feels honoured to represent the community in which he was born and grew up. He too sees economic development as a priority issue. “Along with the Mayor, I will work hard to tackle economic development in the region, one of the biggest issues facing the municipality,” he said. “We are already working closely with other councils, local businesses and agencies, to provide our community with security and growth beyond the changes we are seeing in the manufacturing sector.”
Surveying the economic landscape for new jobs
We’re coming up to a time of economic change, but there are many opportunities for new investment, diversification and the creation of new jobs. Council is developing an economic strategy in partnership with key stakeholders, and is asking local businesses, industry and stakeholders to have their say on what they think are the priorities and opportunities for the area. Two surveys are available, one for local businesses and industry, and another for interested stakeholders. Both surveys close at 5pm on Monday 24 November. For more information or to participate, visit ‘Have Your Say’ on the Hobsons Bay City Council website.
Growing your own business
If you are a local business you may be interested in a two-day workshop taking place on 18 November and 2 December entitled E-success – Gain, Maintain and Retain Customers. At a subsidised rate of $500+GST (usually $2000), you will learn how online and digital marketing strategies can improve the competitiveness of your business. For more information email business@ hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au or phone 9932 1000.
Citizen of the Year awards You may have been fortunate enough to see the Unsung Heroes exhibition back in July. We want to see more and more of these community members become ‘sung’ rather than ‘unsung heroes.’ No doubt you know someone who should be recognised for their achievements - someone who excels in sport or art maybe, or someone who gives many hours to a community organisation. If you know of someone who provides a valued contribution to the following areas – community service, sport, art and culture, environment, and business and economic development – please fill out a nomination form by going to the following address: http://www.hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au/ Council/Citizen_Awards. Alternatively you can pick up a nomination form at the Civic Centre, 115 Civic Parade. Nominations are open to all individuals who live, work or study in Hobsons Bay. The closing date is 5pm, 28 November 2014.

Youth need to be heard
VCAT ‘no’ to townhouses
Robyn Broadbent
(Joe Mastroianni)
By Ebru Halimoff Youth policies are necessary to ensure young Australians are not radicalised, a Victoria University youth work academic has claimed. Professor Robyn Broadbent says targeted government support would better engage radicalised young Australians who otherwise turn on their own country. Professor Broadbent said clear youth policies needed to be implemented by the Australian government to ensure the value of Australian youth was recognised and supported. “No one is joining the dots about why the young men making news as ‘terrorists’ in Australia are becoming marginalised and disengaged,” she said. “This is not about religion or politics – it’s about them seeing themselves as having no future, no seat at the table, no chance for active participation in the governance of their community and of their country.” Professor Broadbent stressed the seriousness of the issue would evolve without a policy or minister for youth to represent young Australians. She said a national youth policy should embrace all of the issues that impact on young people, including education, health, welfare, employment, gender equality and civic participation. Professor Broadbent suggests that Australia develop formal policies that mandate a youth voice at every level of government, especially of young people from disadvantaged or minority backgrounds. Victoria University Greens Group is hosting a free community forum, which focuses on terror, policing, ASIO, Islam and the community, on November 13, 6pm, at Victoria University, Ballarat Road, Footscray. More details at www.greenswest.org/the_issue.
NEWS
Plans to build four two-storey townhouses on a single block in South Kingsville have been knocked back by the state’s planning tribunal. The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) has refused to grant a permit to Dajvis Andonov for 34 Saltley Street, saying although subdivision was common, the applicant was trying to put too much on one site. Hobsons Bay council had refused to grant a permit based on neighbourhood character and lack of sunlight in private open space for future residents at the site. VCAT member Bill Sibonis said the applicant had correctly noted there were many examples of two-storey dwellings in the neighbourhood. “It appears to be emerging as a preferred form of medium-density housing,” Mr Sibonis said. “In Saltley Street, however, the original, modest housing stock predominates. The prevailing scale in this section of the street is single storey.” He said this did not mean a two-storey development could or should not be approved for the site, but it needed to be designed in a way that fitted the “low-profile nature of the streetscape”. Mr Sibonis said the council’s concerns were justified about lack of sunlight for the building’s private open space. He said it might be an indication the applicant was trying to accommodate too many buildings on the block. Goya Dmytryshchak

Cumming in state poll
Crime bust made easy
(Martina Gemmola)
By Ebru Halimoff Maribyrnong councillor Catherine Cumming will run as an independent candidate in the forthcoming state election. Cr Cumming, a councillor for 17 years, said she hoped Footscray would become a marginal seat to attract more funds and attention from state governments. “If we continue to stay as a safe Labor seat, we won’t attract the same grants or major project money, she said. “It just makes sense that we become a marginal seat. Cr Cumming, 42, said the mix of long-term voters and new voters moving into the area was a good political mix that would help stop the neglect of the area. “I do believe the voters are changing in this area and people who have been here the longest are changing the most because they understand they’re being neglected, she said. “They’ve seen it all. Cr Cumming said Footscray was in need of an independent MP to work with the community, for the community. “I’ve created a little bit of attention to Footscray, but it deserves a lot more attention, the kind that an independent would give the area, she said. “Real people should get into Parliament. It’s great to have real people in Parliament who are not scared to speak up for the community. “We need to have a community voice rather than a party voice. “I think we get sick of politicians and political speech and not saying what should be said. “I hope Footscray has grown up enough to change. The state election will be on Saturday, November 29.

An alleged crime racket involving a Footscray grocery and a gift shop was smashed in almost comical fashion on Friday. Most of the nine people arrested turned up to the shops in the midst of police raids and with allegedly stolen goods in tow, unaware of what was unfolding, a police spokeswoman said. The raids started at a grocer in Nicholson Street, Footscray, at 11am, when two Coburg residents, aged in their 60s, were arrested. Investigators then searched the couple’s storage unit and, as police were there, the manager of a gift shop next door turned up with allegedly stolen goods, the spokeswoman said. It prompted police to then search the gift shop, the shop’s owners storage unit and his car, where more items were found. Another five people, aged between 29 and 36, then turned up to the gift shop, also bearing allegedly stolen goods, while police were still there. By day’s end about $500,000 in stolen property had been seized and nine people are expected to be charged. “Police recovered large volumes of retail items, such as make-up, vitamins, alcohol and other personal items, from predominantly major retailers, Acting Superintendent Tony Long said in a statement. These were then allegedly being sold on to smaller retail outlets. Tammy Mills, The Age

People experiencing anxiety and depression will be able to access more support close to home after the Anxiety Disorders Association of Victoria (ADAVIC) received a $2958 grant from the Hobsons Bay Community Fund. ADAVIC executive director Nathan Hobbs said the not-for-profit group gets no government funding and the grant would enable it to reach more people through lectures and workshops in Hobsons Bay. “We’ve got a lot of feedback from participants and people in the Altona region that there isn’t much out there,” he said. “We live in a society that tends to be high-stress with a lot of the problems that we deal with on a day-to-day basis. “There’s a range of different symptoms but for some people – and this is probably true of
people at our support group in Altona – it can really impact their day-to-day living,” he said. “Anxiety can really stop people getting things done, especially when it comes to social anxiety.” Mr Hobbs said the educational sessions could help some people manage their anxiety without medication. The community fund grant awards will be presented tomorrow night at the Kooringal Golf Club, which has joined Signcraft, Qenos, Compton Green, UMS and Star Weekly as corporate supporters. The community fund is allocating $30,678 in grants to 11 causes this year, and it has given more than $120,000 to 55 community groups in its nine years. Goya Dmytryshchak

Renovators looking for their next challenge will find it with this Footscray property. The house’s mint-green color flows throughout the inside and into three bedrooms with polished floorboards – two with built-in wardrobes, one of which has a ceiling fan; a lounge room with polished floorboards, gas wall heater, ceiling fan and air-conditioner; meals zone; and original kitchen. The original bathroom awaits the wave of a renovator’s magic wand, while a toilet is in the laundry. Off-street parking for one car is included. The property is ideal for people who aren’t keen on gardening as there’s little to maintain in the front or back yards. It’s close to Whitten Oval, Footscray West and Footscray primary schools, West Footscray train station, Barkly Street shops and eateries and Western Hospital. Princes Highway is a short drive away.
Within a walk of Newport station and shops and just 10 kilometres from the CBD, this smart townhouse has designer elements that deliver extra panache. Stretches of lovely polished floorboards and a combo of white fittings, black accents and off-white wall colour provides a fresh, crisp feel to spacious rooms. Three large bedrooms up top include the main with a wall of mirrored robes and a sleek en suite. A downstairs study could be a fourth bedroom. The main bathroom is a stylish affair, with a freestanding bath sitting on black floor tiles. The glossy kitchen has a stone-wrapped island bench under feature pendant lights, black splashback and a 900mm gas cooker under a canopy rangehood. Gas ducted heating and refrigerated cooling take care of changing seasons, and other perks are an alarm system and a colour-video intercom. The compact backyard has a timber deck surrounded by river stones and there’s a single remote-controlled garage.

61 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 12, 2014
TECH TALK MARIBYRNONG.STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
Go a little bit M.A.D A Holden salesman once told me Fords are not cars,
they’re 20,000 spare parts travelling in close formation. The work of Swiss artist Fabian Oefner reminds me of this statement. His meticulously accurate cars explode into their individual parts. He’s an artist adopted by the M.A.D Gallery, a homage to mechanical art devices. If you’re a technology nut and you’ve never heard of the M.A.D. Gallery, you have a treat in store. I knew nothing of it until a media release turned up from someone in Geneva plugging a book of truck photography. Truck photography? Has someone suddenly made trucks beautiful? After looking, I decided not. But the gallery’s website is stunning. M.A.D. Gallery’s website is chockers with beautiful and compelling technology. It’s big on watches and timepieces (it calls them horological machines) but it also deals with motorcycles, penny-farthings, music boxes, musical instruments and Fabian Oefner’s exploding cars.
The M.A.D. Gallery opened in 2011 in Geneva’s old town – and a second M.A.D. Gallery has since opened in, of all places, Taipei. As well as a permanent display of timepieces, it gathers glorious examples of mechanical art from around the world, “each one making your heart beat that little bit faster”, the website assures. The gallery is an offshoot of an operation called MB&F, or Maximilian Büsser and friends, which has gathered people to design and build a radical and original “horological masterpiece” every year.
What \ M.A.D. Gallery
Büsser started out working for watch company Jaeger-LeCoultre and then ran a company specialising in rare timepieces, before forming MB&F in 2005. Now Büsser is hooked up with artists from around the world, from Japan’s Chicara Nagata, who took three years to build his first motorcycle, to American Bob Potts, who makes kinetic sculptures that capture the beauty of natural movement, such as the flight of birds. Go to madgallery.ch, but make yourself a cup of coffee first; you’ll be there a while. Fabian Oefner \ exploding car

Yappy Ram gets the job done By Lance Jenkinson Liam Vicary-Lovegrove can get under the skin of opposition players with his banter during the course of a Baseball Victoria summer league division 1 game. But the Newport Rams’ lead-off hitter let his bat do the talking on Sunday, starring with three RBIs from two hits in a 5-4 win over the Waverley Wildcats on the road at Napier Park. Rams assistant coach Gavin Young expressed satisfaction with Vicary-Lovegrove’s approach. “He’s not the most-liked player in the league because he’s very vocal, but he’s a guy who gets the job done,” Young said. “He’s a class player.” The Rams are firing on all cylinders, having reeled off five consecutive wins to hold the equal-best record in the league with three other teams. The pitching of Griffin Weir has a lot to do with the team’s success. Weir has not given up an earned run in his past three outings. Since a rough first-up outing, Weir has bounced back to win three of his past four and has an impressive 1.82 ERA from 29 innings. He lasted seven innings this outing, handing the bullpen a 5-2 lead. Vicary-Lovegrove coughed up two runs in relief in the eighth, but import closer Eric Kline ensured there would be no fairytale comeback for the Wildcats. Jordan Young was superb at shortstop, making a number of big plays. It was another impressive team effort from the Rams – and a necessary one as they went in undermanned.

“It was more of a makeshift team that was able to stay strong through it,” Young said. “We came up with the hits at the right time and were defensively good. Griffin Weir did a great job just doing what he’s been doing.” The Rams face Melbourne (4-3) in a blockbuster tonight in the early game at the Melbourne Ballpark in Altona from 6.30, and they back up on Sunday at home to Doncaster (4-3) at KC White Reserve. Williamstown Wolves are licking their wounds after a 10-1 thrashing from Doncaster on the road on Saturday. That result followed back-to-back losses to arch-rival Newport, leaving the Wolves with a disappointing 2-5 record after seven games. The Wolves will be in action tonight at Altona in the late game against Waverley (1-6) from 8.50 before entertaining Blackburn (5-2) on Sunday. The Melbourne Aces have lowered their colours to the Brisbane Bandits, losing three of their four games in the season-opening series in the Australian Baseball League at the Melbourne Ballpark. The Aces went down in the opener 10-3 on Friday night when an incredible seven home runs – five to the Bandits and two to the Aces – were blasted out of the park. The Aces bounced back in the Saturday twilight game to win 2-1 after an 11th inning walk-off home run from Brad Harman. The rest of the series belonged to the visitors, with the Bandits taking game three 5-4 on Sunday and the special Schools Day game four 2-1 on Monday morning.
