CALENDAR Summer by the bay What better way to begin the summer events cycle... than with a summer cycling event. If you go down to Nelson Place on Monday 5 January you can catch the final stage of the Mitchelton Bay Cycling Classic Criterium. Fridays in January are to be reserved for popcorn, picnics and film. From 8.45pm onwards two waterfront locations - Logan Reserve, Altona and Commonwealth Reserve, Williamstown - take it in turns to host Movies by the Bay. Bring a rug and a picnic for Rio 2, How to Train your Dragon 2, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Guardians of the Galaxy and Planes: Fire Rescue. Australia Day in Altona, presented by the Altona Village Traders Association, will be back with a feelgood array of live music, entertainment and al fresco dining between 11am and 9pm on 26 January. And then February is all about Summer Sounds. Celebrating its tenth consecutive year, the backyard music festival is back, alternating each Sunday between Logan and Commonwealth Reserves. Each show is free and packed with great music from country, folk, and soul to R&B. This year there’s also a special Summer Sounds: In Your Neighbourhood on 15 February at Trafalgar Avenue, Altona Meadows Community Park. NYE on The Strand Many people travel to Hobsons Bay to view the Melbourne fireworks on New Year’s Eve. In the interests of public safety, Victoria Police has requested that The Strand be closed to vehicle traffic, from approximately 8.30pm until 1.30am. Residents will be notified of exact details by letter and Council will be posting updates on the website. The City of Melbourne has advised Council that their 9.30pm family fireworks will not be visible from the Williamstown foreshore. Despite this, Council has planned for the usual gatherings that occur along the Strand for those who want to watch City of Melbourne’s midnight fireworks show. Council will provide additional toilet facilities. Victoria Police will also patrol the area and we ask that those who attend to respect the amenity of surrounding homes, including the parking restrictions and most importantly to have a safe New Year.

The Pelican is flying With the festive season coming up, it’s time for the last Pelican Post of the year and also one of the last in the Post’s current format. Can you remember back to 9 August 2005? That was the very first edition. The Mayoral Program was offering engineering scholarships and a National Theatre production of Swan Lake was coming to Williamstown Town Hall. Since then, every week we’ve reported on events, projects, community activities and interesting initiatives. So what’s new in 2015? Well, after almost ten years in this format, the Pelican will be replaced by an eight-page newsletter that will be delivered to your front door. This will provide us with a chance to offer more detailed stories, profiles and news on upcoming events. Hotel growth raises ire

Edgewater residents are angry at plans to expand a 38-dwelling hotel and apartment block from four to five storeys to accommodate an extra 12 apartments. Their angst is compounded by the fact the addition of the new two-level apartments requires removal of 14 car spaces on the fourth storey of the complex being constructed at 31 Edgewater Boulevard. On public notices erected at the site, builders TM Design Group have revealed their proposed amendment on behalf of the developers. But a member of Residents Against Inappropriate Development in Maribyrnong (RAIDIM), Enzo Defazio, said the proposal had been poorly advertised with notices placed on perimeters that were rarely seen. “As a community, we do want something there but we want appropriate development,” Mr Defazio said. He said the larger development was inappropriate for various reasons, including a lack of car spaces, which would increase traffic in an already heavily congested area. “We’re a very tight-knit community and our concerns are not only for Edgewater but for the whole area. The additional residential apartments will add to the congestion in a way that services/short term accommodation would not.” Residents are already finding it difficult to park in side streets, he said. “We’re concerned for the health and safety of children and frailer adults who will be at risk from poor visibility when trying to cross residential streets due to the increased congestion.”

A spokesman for TM Design group said the hotel initially had an allowance of 50 hotel rooms and 299 car parks. “We reduced to 38 hotel rooms and now are proposing back to the initial number for 50 rooms with 14 less car parks. We justified that in our traffic report and we think that is fully justifiable. The mechanism

allows for us to propose the development and the locals to reject it, and the council will make a decision on the proposal before them,” he said. No changes are proposed for the gaming facility that has been approved for the ground floor of the complex. The Maribyrnong City Council is yet to comment on the proposal.

Police have charged a 17-year-old boy over an attack on a woman at Altona’s Cherry Lake in October, as the community this week prepares to unite to reclaim their parkland. Sexual crimes squad detectives say a 31-year-old woman was walking on the northern side of the lake about 11am on October 29 when she was grabbed around the neck from behind and forced towards some bushes at knifepoint. A man on a bicycle was riding by and intervened, causing the attacker to flee. Police arrested a 17-year-old boy about midnight the following night and placed him in a correctional facility. Last Friday, he was charged with assault with intent to rape, unlawful imprisonment, recklessly causing injury and other assault-related offences. He will appear at a children’s court at a later date. On Thursday, people are being invited to an event dubbed ‘Take back Cherry Lake’, with a free barbecue at 6pm and a walk or run around the lake at 6.30pm. Hobsons Bay councillor Paul Morgan said the council-run event aimed to unite and empower the community. “We want men and women in our community to get together under the banner of these campaigns to recognise that community assets such as Cherry Lake are ours and we should be able to enjoy them.” Goya Dmytryshchak

World comes to Willie Williamstown will next year host the International Association for Disabled Sailing (IFDS) world championships, which are expected to inject $7 million into the local and Victorian economies. It will be only the second time the event has been held in Australia. The Royal Yacht Club of Victoria will host the IFDS world championships from November 26 to December 3, with about 150 sailors, including those who are vision-impaired, expected to compete. Event chairman and Paralympic gold medallist Michael McLean says the event will attract competitors from about 30 countries including the UK, USA, France and Canada. It is the final nations’ qualifier for the 2016 Rio Paralympics.

“This is an event that’s at the highest level of competition, probably even in some respects more than the Paralympics themselves because there are more competitors,” Mr McLean said. Thirty-three years ago, Mr McLean had a workplace accident on the Eastern Freeway that left him in a wheelchair. But the yacht club vice-president, who sails each week at Williamstown, said the sport was one in which able-bodied and disabled sailors could take part on equal terms. “My current boat is a 30-foot keel boat and I actually don’t have any modifications on that at all, so I just get on and sail,” he said. Footscray Edgewater tumbled back outside Premier Cricket’s top eight after being well beaten by Melbourne in a T20 match at Merv Hughes Oval on Saturday. The Bulldogs restricted Melbourne to 4-155, but then their star-studded batting line-up had an off day to be all out for an ugly 95 in 17.3 overs. The Dogs host Monash Tigers in a one-dayer on Saturday, the last before the Christmas break.

The Bulldogs are the toast of the women’s state league 1 for the second time in three seasons, reclaiming the title with a tight 13-12 triumph over Richmond in the grand final at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. The Bulldogs had to do it in extra time – winning a shoot-out 3-2 after the game was deadlocked 10-apiece at full time. Bulldogs coach Alby Morrison paid tribute to his players’ work ethic. “They are the ones who put in the hard work and the coach sits on the side and gives advice.” The Bulldogs went into the season decider with key personnel unavailable. Testing their depth, Morrison had to call on two players from the second side, while the starting seven logged heavier minutes than usual to make up for the absences. “Throughout the season we tended to change the players every time a goal was scored and bring in a couple of players on the side, but we didn’t do it as much in the final,” Morrison said. “We had to play our starting seven more often in the final, but the girls are reasonably fit towards the end of the season, so they kept up with the pace.” The feature of the premiership was the homegrown make-up of the side. The Bulldogs opted against recruiting international imports the way other clubs have in the past. “It’s the promotion of your local players that it’s important,” Morrison said. Elise Rossato, Madison Morrison and Genevieve Venosta were superb for the Bulldogs in the final. Venosta’s game was cut short after she was fouled out, but she did her damage in the first half to set up the win.

English import Harry Finch became the second Yarraville player after skipper Matthew Love to score centuries in consecutive Sub-District matches this summer. Finch smashed 122 to lead the Eagles to 298 for a 114-run win over Brunswick at Yarraville Oval on Saturday. The fourth-placed Eagles now face local rivals Altona in a blockbuster one-day match before the mid-season break. Altona will be smarting after a heavy 162-run first-innings loss to Ivanhoe, while Williamstown had a thrilling one-wicket win over Kew ahead of Sunday’s home bout with traditional rivals Werribee.
