Women’s refuge on notice The owner of a Maribyrnong property leased as a women’s refuge says she may stop renting her house to the state government because of continued complaints about violence and graffiti. Since 2001, Louise Saddler has rented her townhouse to the Department of Health and Human Services, which subleases it to a women’s housing group that provides secure accommodation for women and children. Ms Saddler said she had no choice but to give the department notice because she could no longer ignore the impact antisocial behaviour at the refuge was having on the neighbours. “Since 2001, there have been problems with noise and domestic violence,” she said. “There have been bongs at the front, wife bashing, Nazi stickers and external graffiti. Not to mention a ‘free sex’ sign pointing to my unit.” Ms Saddler said she had written many complaints to the department and asked for a solution to the issue, but the responses were “poor”. “The department said unless I had witnesses and names of the tenants, they were obliged to adhere to the Residential Tenancy Act. The housing commission said they couldn’t do anything either. I even went to the police, but everyone is fearful of reprisal.” Ms Saddler said she sympathised with both the department and the women

in need of public housing. “Although I made requests to the department and the women’s group to provide strategies for dealing with the problems caused by the tenant, I didn’t receive a response from either party.” She said her only option was to give the department notice. Her main concern, she said, was the loss of available public housing because of a few misbehaving tenants and the organisations that “lack the ability” to properly police refuges. “Because I have given notice, there

is now one less property available to a family in need.” A department spokeswoman said all tenants were expected to be good neighbours and behave in a way that minimised inconvenience to others. “But when this doesn’t happen, community housing agencies and the department can and do take legal action to evict antisocial tenants,” the spokeswoman said. “The situation has obviously been frustrating for the owner of the property and the department is working with the community housing agency to relocate the tenant and ensure the property is left in good condition.”

Altona house Solar Sollew is both family and environmentally friendly. As well as attending the Sustainable February events, why not try our new energy advice line to find out how you can become more energy efficient?
Can we save you money?
Sustainable February
You may have seen reports recently saying that, by 2030, experts are predicting every second detached home in Victoria could have solar.
As part of the Sustainable Living Festival’s State of Sustainability, taking place between 7 February and 1 March, February is ‘Sustainability’ month in Hobsons Bay. Want to hear how you can reduce your energy bills? Or how to make healthy school lunches? How to prune your fruit trees? Or have you found yourself with an excess of homegrown produce and would like to swap with other gardeners?
Solar Sollew (pictured above) - located in Civic Parade, Altona and designed by husband and wife team Jeremy Spencer and Chi Lu - uses around one tenth of the energy of a standard Melbourne home thanks to factors such as smart architectural features, water efficiency, and material selection. Your house may not be a similar nine star environmental design (ten star being a house that requires no artificial heating or cooling) - but with a few small amendments to your property, your energy usage can make a huge difference. If you want to know more we’ve made things easy. Our free, independent energy advice line provides remote technical advice (phone and email) for areas such as heating and cooling, hot water, lighting, compressors and appliances including advice on purchasing decisions. Remote solar assessments for householders, businesses and schools are also available. First step - visit www.positivecharge.com.au or call 9385 8555. The second step is to simply sit back and listen to the experts.
What’s happening to the Pelican? You may recall an article on 17 December last year saying that the Pelican Post will soon be flying away. Indeed, February will see a new format for the Council newsletter, no longer a weekly one pager in the newspaper, but an eight page newsletter with a chance for more detailed profiles and event listings. The newsletter will be delivered to your door four times a year and it will also be available online. So while the Pelican may be migrating elsewhere, local news, local event listings, and updates on important projects will still be coming to your door - with the opportunity for greater focus and greater detail.
All these activities, talks, workshops and more are happening right here in your neighbourhood throughout February. For more details go to Council’s website.
Have you got engaged recently? We’re reviewing the way we engage with the community and we want to make sure you have the chance to engage in a meaningful, effective and consistent way. The survey is available at http:// participate.hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au/engagement or you can pick up a copy at the Hobsons Bay Civic Centre or any of the local library branches. Once developed, the draft Community Engagement Policy will be placed on public exhibition giving you a further opportunity to provide feedback.
Planning permit application Application PA1430375 Contour Consultants Australia Pty Ltd has lodged an application to construct and display a floodlit major promotion sign at 34-38 Marshall Court, Altona. The application and supporting documentation may be inspected at the Hobsons Bay Civic Centre 8.30am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, or via Green Light, Council’s online permit management system, at Council’s website. Any person who may be affected by the granting of the permit may object or make other submissions to the Council in writing, including the reasons for an objection and stating how the objector would be affected by 4 February 2015. Objectors will be advised of the decision. For further information, please contact Kylie Sullivan on 9932 1158.

NEWS
Western suburbs students go economy class Thousands of western suburbs students are learning in a growing number of sub-standard portable classrooms, new figures have revealed. In some schools, more than half the students will study this year in “relocatable buildings”. An Education Department tender document has outlined that “population growth, high-density suburban development and emerging regional growth corridors and constraints on capital investment” have increased the demand for portables. Australian Education Union Victorian branch president Meredith
Peace blamed a lack of foresight for the unprecedented number of portables popping up at school grounds in the west. She said there needed to be more investment in, and planning for, the state’s growth corridors. “There’s a desperate need for schools and those schools haven’t been built quickly enough,” Ms Peace said. “I think we’re seeing a greater pressure on relocatables because the previous government didn’t act fast enough to ensure we had new schools.”
A spokesman for the department said “relocatables” offered a flexible and efficient solution to address various issues. “The relocatables provide state-of-the-art learning environments comparable to a school’s permanent classrooms,” the spokesman said. “Melbourne’s outer western suburbs are the fastest-growing area of Victoria. So schools in the area typically receive more of the relocatables.” The number of portable classroom “transfers” across the state is expected to rise from about 160 in 2012-13 to 260 this financial
year. Meanwhile, 61 portable classrooms were “transferred” to schools in the western suburbs last financial year, followed by 58 in the south, 53 in the north and 24 in the east. The department is now seeking expressions of interest to transfer the buildings in a bid to cut the program’s annual cost of $30-$40 million. The Andrews government made an election pledge of $50 million to replace 250 portable classrooms and $510 million to rebuild schools across the state. Sumeyya Ilanbey
Red alert for Mobil crossing
Plain clothes police sergeant Jason Van Doren watches for bad driver behaviour at Laverton. (Wayne Hawkins)
Spot checks cost drivers By Goya Dmytryshchak Fourteen drivers received $440 wake-up calls last Thursday morning after being caught using mobile phones during a police operation at Laverton. Hobsons Bay highway patrol stationed plain clothes and uniform members at a hot spot for mobile phone use, where cars leave Railway Avenue to get on the freeway for Melbourne. Sergeant Jason Van Doren was in plain clothes standing by the kerb just after a pedestrian crossing. The “spotter” peered into passing cars, ready to alert officers parked around the corner to any offenders.
His division had identified two major problems at the hot spot – vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists, being hit by cars and driver distraction offences. “They’re interlinked in that drivers get distracted … and they’re not seeing pedestrians cross the road, not seeing other things happen in front of them,” Sergeant Van Doren said. During an hour and a half, police detected more than 30 offences, including 14 drivers using a mobile phone. They will receive four demerit points as well as a hefty fine. “You wouldn’t encourage someone to drive along down the road and close their eyes for two or three seconds,” Sergeant Van Doren
said. “Generally, that’s what people are doing when they’re using a mobile phone. “They’re taking their eyes off the road, they’re fully engrossed in what’s happening to a phone.” Sergeant Van Doren later observed a suspicious vehicle parking outside a nearby supermarket so checked its registration. It revealed the car was unregistered and had false plates. The 49-year-old driver was also found to not be displaying his P-plates. He was drug-tested and returned a positive preliminary reading to methamphetamine. He copped a $443 penalty and three-month suspension of his licence.

Police are working with Mobil to combat numerous near misses at a pedestrian crossing outside the Altona refinery on Millers Road. Sergeant Jason Van Doren said drivers were constantly running the red light when pedestrians – mainly Mobil workers – have right of way. “There have been quite a few near misses, to the point that even though they’re quite entitled to cross on the green ‘walk’ man, management has even put signs up for the workers to remind them don’t cross until you’re sure cars have stopped,” he said. Police will be conducting plain clothes operations at the lights, with a “spotter” to alert officers secreted over a rise in the road. “I’ll actually get a video camera and tape some of the actions of the drivers,” Sergeant Van Doren said. “And they’re not just drivers – I’ve seen lights red for 30 seconds and bike riders just decide they’re going to blast straight through.” Refinery manager Andrew Williamson said the crossing, traffic lights and warning signals were funded by Mobil in 2005 to enable workers to safely cross the road from one of its car parks. “Mobil is concerned that since the signals were installed, we have continually encountered drivers failing to stop at the crossing’s red light, endangering the lives of our employees and the public,” he said. “To improve the safety of the crossing, we have worked with VicRoads to improve the visibility of the traffic signals and have requested installation of a road-safety camera at the crossing.” He said Mobil also reports incidents of drivers running the red light to Crime Stoppers. Fresh face for freeway
Kids keep streets clean and green
By Goya Dmytryshchak VicRoads’ managers donned overalls and armed themselves with rollers and paintbrushes on Monday to start cleaning graffiti from a 30-kilometre stretch of the Princes Freeway. Starting at Altona Meadows, structures acting manager Luay Butrus led the clean up at the Fitzroy Street/Cameron Avenue pedestrian overpass. “Graffiti and tagging are a major blight on the Princes Freeway corridor, so I am excited to manage a works program which will make a positive difference to tens of thousands of residents and motorists,” Mr Butrus said. Metropolitan north west regional director Adam Maguire said painting, graffiti removal, landscaping and noise-wall repairs would be carried out along the Princes Freeway corridor, between the M80 Ring Road and Little River Road. “The Princes Freeway carries tens of thousands of drivers to their homes and workplaces in Hobsons Bay and Wyndham each day, but it’s also a magnet for unsightly and illegal graffiti and it’s in need of additional vegetation,” he said. The project is part of VicRoads’ 2014-15 graffiti removal strategy, following on from graffiti removal on the West Gate Freeway last year. Hobsons Bay and Wyndham councils will be consulted to determine the best type of landscaping and planting, which will happen in autumn when the vegetation has the best chance of flourishing. Hobsons Bay mayor Colleen Gates said the council last year spent $343,397 removing graffiti. “We’ve held many discussions with VicRoads over the years relating to the unsightly state of the land along Princes Highway corridor in Hobsons Bay,” she said.
Local children will be helping to encourage Maribyrnong residents to reduce waste as part of a new recycling trial. The youngsters have volunteered to appear on images on bins that will pop up in Yarraville and Seddon in the next couple of weeks, giving recycling a thumbs up. The bins will be placed in the shopping strips in Charles Street and Wembley Avenue to encourage locals to recycle their waste. Mayor Nam Quach praised the young volunteers and said the community can help reduce its impact on the environment by recycling more often. “Our children are great ambassadors for our environment and their images will be a colourful reminder to recycle,” he said. “With Clean Up Australia Day just around the corner on Sunday 1 March, now is the ideal time to clean up our act and help Keep Maribyrnong Beautiful.” Cr Quach said if the trial proves sucessful more bins will be rolled out in other Maribyrnong shopping centres.

“There is a lot of work to be done particularly along the Newland and High streets exits in Laverton, upgrading of all the soundwalls along the highway – in particular the perspex at the McCormack Park/ Laverton Creek crossing – and cleaning up the land adjacent to the Fitzgerald Road city
bound on and off ramps in Laverton. “We encourage people to report graffiti to council either through our customer service or using the smart phone app Snap Send Solve.” VicRoads has a policy of removing offensive graffiti within 24 hours. It can be reported on 13 11 70.

‘Ratchet’ warning to ratepayers By Goya Dmytryshchak A state coalition MP has warned ratepayers will be hit with substantial rate rises next financial year as councils seek to cash in before rates caps are introduced by the Labor government. Shadow attorney-general John Pesutto said he learned on Thursday that Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins had written to councils warning them of the folly of steeply increasing rates in the 2015-16 financial year.
“The effect of Minister Hutchins’ letter is almost to invite councils to significantly hit ratepayers with substantial rises in rates,” he said. “What else will councils do now than to move quickly in the ’15-’16 year to ratchet up rates before Labor’s rates cap is introduced? “This is a ham-fisted approach to the way councils need to conduct their operations and Labor should review its proposal urgently.” Maribyrnong chief executive Stephen Wall was coy when asked if Mr Pesutto was

correct in asserting his council would ratchet up rates next year. “Council is mindful of the impact rate rises have on residents when working out what increases are needed each year to maintain and improve services,” Mr Wall said. “Council is required to engage with
the community in regards to proposed rate increases prior to adopting the budget each year.” But Hobsons Bay mayor Colleen Gates rejected the claim, saying next year’s rate rise was expected to modest. “Council has long-term rating strategies and plans in place that prioritise our budget investments up to 10 years in advance,” she said. “These plan for modest rate increases and I would expect that council’s rates will be what was planned for the 2015-16 year regardless of the capping policy.”
Big day for a beach boy
1157676-AM41-14
Young Damien Parma can’t wait for Australia Day. The six-year-old Altona boy is fascinated with the Australian flag and Altona beach is just about his favourite place. His mum, Natalie Parma, said she and her husband, Daniel, built their family home near the beach about 10 years ago. “During the summer months, and especially over the school holidays, the children love spending most of their time on the sand, building sandcastles and swimming in the water,” she said. “We love the area – it’s a fantastic place to bring up kids … the beach is fantastic because it’s a very kid-friendly and you can walk for miles and miles without having to worry about large waves.” She said Damien loved going to the beach with his 10-year-old sister, Naydean. Of course, his favourite beach towel features the
Australian flag. “Ever since he’s been little he’s always had a fascination with the Australian flag – he just loves it,” Ms Parma said. “He was probably an old Australian pioneer in his past life … he really loves anything with the Australian flag. “He’s got an Australia-flag picture on his wall in his bedroom, and he’s even partial to the British flag as well.” Altona’s Australia Day celebrations will be held at the beach and surrounds from 11am-9pm. High-rise greed
[Re: Outcry over high-rise bid, Star Weekly Weekly, January 14] Surely in such a dampened jobs market, with unaffordable housing and all the economic constraints we are facing at the federal and state levels, there’s no precedent for such apartments and housing density that will overload existing services and amenities. Once these high-rise monstrosities are built, they will boost the “projected” population growth and change the dynamics of the area altogether – with nil net gain, just losses for the local community. Endless population growth, driven by greed and the lucrative wealth of property development, with no aim or target, will destroy our city and suburbs. Milly Osbourne, via web The developer has interest in three sites down Blackshaws Road. If one 10-storey building gets through the process, what will stop them making the whole street a high-rise jungle? Chris Turner, via web Our economy has largely declined but is kept afloat through high rates of population growth. A housing-based economy dependant on rising house prices and high demand is unsustainable. We need to move off the housing Ponzi scheme to preserve our living standards and the amenities of our city. VivKay, via web
Fixing the Footscray mess
The proposed West Gate Distributor won’t work. Having on- and off-ramps from the western side of the West Gate Bridge
connecting to Hyde Street will only recreate the criss-cross traffic flow VicRoads had to solve at the Bolte Bridge and West Gate Freeway junction some years ago. All of the high-voltage power lines under the West Gate Bridge will have to be relocated. Construction of the on/off-ramps for inbound and outbound trucks will need to provide clearance over the power lines for the trains and under the West Gate Bridge to clear truck load height. Using Hyde Street as a collector route for West Gate truck traffic will destroy the use of Hyde Street for cyclists commuting from the outer west to the inner city. Footscray Road narrows from eight lanes on the eastern side of Shepherd Bridge down to one at Napier and Hyde Streets. Shepherd Bridge needs widening to at least six traffic lanes plus bicycle lanes that must continue along Buckley Street to Geelong Road at the West Footscray overpass. This should alleviate the Yarraville truck issue. An Elevated Dock Link Road connecting Footscray, Dynon and Ballarat roads at the Newells Paddock/Lynche Bridge area on Ballarat Road would take trucks off Moore Street. Maybe then and only then will the disconnected roadway mess at Footscray be fixed. Noel Dyson, Hobsons Bay Bicycle Users Group Star Weekly welcomes letters no longer than 200 words. Final days for black spot
NIKITA AZZOPARDI
Stage set for summer By Goya Dmytryshchak Altona’s Nikita Azzopardi will sing the national anthem in Logan Reserve on Australia Day before kicking off the Hobsons Bay Summer Sounds music series. The 18-year-old singer, songwriter and pianist will take to the main stage on Monday at 12.30pm. On February 7, she returns to Altona’s Logan
Reserve for the first Summer Sounds concert also featuring Kylie Auldist & the Glenroy Allstars. After these live shows, Azzopardi plans to take a break to record her debut EP for release this year. She will post regular updates on the “Nikita Azzopardi official” Facebook page. As part of the annual Summer Sounds music series, a concert will be held for the first time at Trafalgar Reserve (aka Altona Meadows
Community Park) on February 15, featuring the Hobsons Bay Band and new country roots trio The Good Earth. Other acts include Ms Murphy and Chris Wilson performing in Altona on February 21. Williamstown’s Commonwealth Reserve will host the Pierce Brothers and Gena Rose Bruce on February 14 and the Liz Stringer band and Suzannah Espie & the Last Word on February 28. All concerts are free and run from 2pm-5pm.
New bike priority signals will soon be switched on at Footscray’s Parker and Whitehall streets. The installation of the signals was part of the state government’s $1.8 million election spending package to improve safety. Greens MP for the western suburbs Colleen Hartland said better safety would encourage cyclists. “It’s taken a few years of campaigning with the cycling community to get this bike black spot fixed, so I’m very happy,” she said. Pub protesters target buyers By Goya Dmytryshchak Williamstown residents, angered by the demolition of Australia’s oldest three-storey pub for apartments, tried to deter potential buyers by protesting outside the developer’s sales office last Saturday. Evolve Development last week demolished the Oriental Hotel (circa 1850) to make way for a six-storey, 83-dwelling apartment block known as Waterline Place. The apartment complex is part of Evolve’s much larger plans to develop the area bounded by Nelson Place and Ann and Kanowna streets. Evolve gained planning approval, on appeal to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, for the first two stages of its development, most recently for a 128-dwelling, 10-storey tower and 41 three-storey townhouses. With Labor backing, Hobsons Bay council is preparing a planning scheme amendment to restrict development on 60 per cent of the total site that does not yet have planning approval. Save Williamstown spokesman and protest organiser Godfrey Moase said residents armed with placards succeeded in making the sales office shut early. “We had a strong turnout for a snap email in the middle of January,” he said. “We will continue to regularly protest and educate potential buyers at the developer’s sales office. “There is a strong depth of feeling in the community that the developer’s action in knocking down the Oriental was an unnecessary

act of vandalism. A bit of community identity was lost to the logic of profit.” But Evolve managing director Ashley Williams said the so-called rally had no impact. “I don’t believe that the protest had any effect and we will be continuing with our marketing activity in the months to come,” he said. “We expect to start construction and roadworks by mid year. “All approvals have been obtained for stage one of the project and we are legally permitted to proceed without further obstruction.”
The 2015 East meets West Lunar Festival comes to Footscray on Sunday, February 8, welcoming Chinese New Year 2015 – the year of the goat. Now in its 24th year, the festival will feature multicultural performances, including lion dancing and Chinese opera, food stalls and fireworks. Footscray Asian Business Association president Wing La said this year’s event was an opportunity to give thanks for a great year. “It’s a chance on behalf of the traders of Footscray to say thank you to the shoppers for the past year, and for us to thank the community to welcome the coming again of a new year,” Mr La said. “We would like to promote the Footscray

CBD with multicultural performances on stage, including Vietnamese, Chinese and Japanese, Indonesian and Philippine.” This year’s festival will celebrate Saigon, Mr La said. “Saigon was the name of the capital of South Vietnam before 1975,” he said. “The Maribyrnong council is in the process of approving a project to build a welcome arch, likely to be named Saigon.” The festival is expected to draw about 60,000 people. Hopkins, Lee and Byron streets and part of Mikelson street will be closed off for the festival. Details: www.faba.org.au/festival-2015.html. Ebru Halimoff

DANIEL WITTHAUS
Gay writes at library Author and gay rights activist Daniel Witthaus will be at Footscray library next month to read from his new novel. The 38-year-old author of Beyond Priscilla: one gay man, one truck, one big idea has been supporting LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transsexual) people and challenging homophobia in Australia’s schools and rural communities for about 18 years. Mr Witthaus, raised in Geelong, began volunteering in gay and lesbian youth support groups in 1996 and was determined to make more Australians supportive of younger people. “The experiences of the young people in that group convinced me I wanted to play my part in making Geelong a safer, more supportive place for young people like them,” Mr Witthaus said. His career rocketed after he piloted
homophobia program Pride & Prejudice in an all-boys’ Catholic school in Geelong in 1999. Mr Witthaus said there had never been a better time to be an LGBT activist. “I’ve spent most of my life working in regional, rural and remote communities, as well as the metro fringe – all the places where people think that challenging homophobia will be most difficult,” he said. “Footscray’s interesting because there are great stories of LGBT people going back 30 or 40 years. We need to hear more of those stories.” The book reading will be at Footscray library on February 5. To book, visit www.liveguide. com.au/Events/1058096/Artists/Daniel_ Witthaus_Man_on_a_Mission.
Maribyrnong’s Go West festival will be part of the annual Midsumma Festival that celebrates gay culture. Running from January 18 to February 8, the festival will embrace six events, including the Team Melbourne Sports Festival, which will take place on January 31 at Footscray Park and Victoria University. Team Melbourne Sports spokesman Sebastian Delfino said the events would showcase sports available to the queer community. “The day provides a space for all the sports to show what they do week in, week out at their sessions,” Mr Delfino said. Maribyrnong mayor Nam Quach said the Go West events were a powerful way to bring people together and celebrate diversity. “Our partnerships with organisations such as Midsumma have enabled us to build a truly dynamic Festival City program that delivers top-quality events in the City of Maribyrnong.” Other Go West events include Edi Donald and the Transients, Miss Gay and Miss Transsexual Australia 2015, and an author talk with Daniel Witthaus. As part of Go West, Hobsons Bay will host a screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show at Altona Meadows library on Thursday from 7pm; Williamstown ghost tours until February 8; and a Sissy Boulevard queer cartoonist exhibition at Newport’s Substation until March 15. History of the deep He looks like he’s just stepped back in time. Jeff Maynard, of the Historical Diving Society, is one of five deep-sea divers who will take the plunge at Williamstown for the Seaworks Maritime Festival this weekend. The Australia Day event commemorates 150 years since the Confederate raider CSS Shenandoah docked in Melbourne in 1865. Four or five divers will take turns gearing up and trudging along the sea bed near Workshop Pier each day from Saturday until Monday, between 11am and 3pm. Mr Maynard said diving with helmets and air hoses was developed in England in the 1830s and still practised today. “The US Navy had a helmet designed to its specifications in 1917 and a Milwaukee manufacturer still produces them to those same details nearly 100 years later,” he said. “It’s still a practical, simple way to dive.” Mr Maynard, a Yarraville resident, said a new helmet could be bought for a few thousand dollars, while a rare antique helmet with a bit of history could be worth $50,000. “Many scuba divers with an interest in history have branched into diving with the original helmets, suits and lead weights, but they are using scuba tanks to supply the air rather than traditional pumps. “Interest in the sport has grown tremendously in the past 20 years. In Australia, it’s mostly recreational diving in the same sense that people will collect old cars and restore them … it’s a little bit of nostalgia in a lot of ways.” More information at www.seaworks.com.au

16 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ JANUARY 21, 2015
Some of Victoria’s finest aspiring athletes will go head to head at the fifth annual Maribyrnong Gift on Australia Day. Hosted by St Andrews Cricket Club and the Victorian Athletic League, the Maribyrnong Gift is another Melbourne suburban athletics carnival – along with Northcote, St Albans and Avondale Heights – that’s becoming increasingly popular with athletes. St Andrews Cricket Club representative Simon Krygger said the event promoted healthy and active lifestyles while bringing people together for family-friendly competition. “What began initially as a small fundraising event for our club has become an important
and exciting opportunity,” Krygger said. “It’s the perfect way for the community to join in an exciting local event and enjoy the fun and interaction with athletes of all ages and abilities,” he said Racing begins at noon at Braybrook’s Pennell Reserve and will feature the 120m Maribyrnong Gift, a 120m women’s race, a 70m open, a 120m race for under 17s, a 300m open, a 300m women’s and veterans race, a 1600m open, and a 800m race for under 20s. Krygger said the club was growing the free event through support from Maribyrnong council. Ebru Halimoff

18 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ JANUARY 21, 2015
Get in the groove Most children sing and dance almost as soon as they walk, often in front of the TV mimicking The Wiggles. Not only is dancing a great way to keep youngsters entertained but it also has health and cognitive benefits. It’s a great way to improve strength and flexibility, posture and balance, and helps children express themselves, according to the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing, one of the world’s leading dance examination boards. Some kids may be bored running around a track or playing other sports but dancing provides them with a fun way to keep fit, helps with co-
ordination, and bopping along to a beat is ideal for children to improve their memory by learning new steps and moves for various routines. Dance schools offer a range of classes suited to boys and girls, whether they choose to be a ballerina or a hip-hop, tap, rap or jazz dancer. Dance schools often also offer singing classes, allowing children to embrace two things they love while being creative and learning, probably without even realising it. With classes catering for toddlers through to teens, there’s bound to be a session that appeals. Rebecca Miller

Within a few minutes’ walk of shops, transport and The Strand foreshore area, the modest timber exterior of this period residence belies its impressive renovation and extension. Entry into the hallway reveals a crisp white colour palette coupled with honey-toned timber floorboards. At hall’s end. the family-meals area has a vaulted ceiling that draws the eye upward and the abundance of natural light makes it a bright, airy place to read a novel or three. The kitchen has stainless-steel double wall oven, dishwasher, 900mm cooktop and rangehood; polished stone benchtops elevate it further. Of the four bedrooms, two have built-in wardrobes; the main has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite. The separate lounge room has an original cast-iron fireplace with timber surround, the perfect place to hibernate during winter; it has glass double doors opening onto a paved outdoor area. And there’s a decked alfresco dining area at the back.
With this large corner property it’s all location, location, location. In the heart of Newport on a tree-lined street, this Californian bungalow is ideal for those looking to renovate or start fresh. The 523-square-metre property is just a stone’s throw from restaurants and cafés, with Newport Park and The Strand within strolling distance. Transport won’t be an issue either, with Newport train station a short walk away and a 10 kilometre trip from the CBD. Typical of its era, it has three bedrooms, a bathroom and lounge-dining area – and high ceilings and fireplaces with period surrounds. The large backyard has lots of potential and could easily fit an extension or a large alfresco area. The property has a garage and side access to the backyard from Farm Street.

SPORT Cullen the key as Clubbers climb to third For the sixth time in eight innings, Yarraville Club middle-order batsman Andrew Cullen has red ink in the scorebook. Cullen simply refuses to give his wicket away cheaply this summer, having scored 350 runs at an impressive average of 116.7. His 57 not out was key to the Clubbers’ narrow 27-run win over Bentleigh at Hansen Reserve on Saturday. Cullen rescued the innings, while other batsmen played important cameo roles. Justin Baker kick-started the batting with 40 at better than a run a ball, before Clubbers bowler Konrad Kurta rose to the occasion with an economical 3-19 off 8.1 overs. It broke Bentleigh’s top partnership of Chris Williams (51) and Alex Caravelas (53no), who met at the crease at a diabolical 5-25. The middle-order duo threatened to take the game away from the Clubbers, with 79 for the sixth wicket, but that was before Kurta trapped
Williams plum in front. Caravelas fought on without much help from the tail-end, and Bentleigh toppled for 147 in the 39th over. The Clubbers are riding high in third spot ahead of their trip to Tullamarine for a two-day game starting Saturday. In north division, Altona North picked up just its second win of the summer. North must have been down in the dumps, making just 9-106, but its bowlers drove Sunshine Druids out for 83. Nathan Patrick took 3-15 off 7.3, while Dean Auciello and Aaron Whear snared two apiece. Laverton lost ground in the top four after it was hammered by fellow finals contender West Coburg. The Magpies posted just 88 and the Burgers picked them off to finish at 6-164. Spotswood’s two-game winning streak ended after losing a thriller to PEGS by three runs. Set a target of 163, the Woodsmen fell just short at 8-159.
In west A1, Williamstown CYMS stayed true to form, taking honours in the local derby over Newport-Digman by 26 runs. Altona Roosters surged up the ladder with a 32-run win over Werribee Centrals, while Footscray United is licking its wounds after a shock 31-run loss to Point Cook. In west B1, Footscray ANA ended West Newport’s winning streak at five, giving its own finals chances a shot in the arm. Sam Kukucka led for ANA with 61 of their total of 6-177 off 40 overs. Wests reached only 135 due to devastating bowling by Josh Everest, who took 4-8 off 5.4. Everest has taken 18 wickets at 14.5 this season, including 15 in the past four matches. Barkly Street Uniting had a comfortable 39-run victory over Deer Park, while Kingsville Baptists and Williamstown Imperials both suffered losses. Lance Jenkinson
IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ The Werribee Golf Club president sent a letter to members this month that certainly sounded a universal chord with anyone involved in a sporting club. The theme was pretty simple and, for me, absolutely correct: Appreciate the people on your club committee rather than pot them at every opportunity. There is nothing easier than criticising the people running your club and being critical of club facilities. In 2015, try and help, remedy problems at your club rather than point them out. Anyone can do that, but to be part of the solution is a totally different dynamic. I have been quite happy to hear from my contacts that the Werribee course has never been in better condition. ■ Hostilities have begun early for the first Legends game between the Glenorden Football Club and Wyndhamvale Falcons. The game is not scheduled until Sunday, March 29, at Glenorden Sports Club in Kookaburra Avenue. History talks of the Hatfields and the McCoys, but history is still being made. The contacts for the two clubs are Justin Menzel for the Hawks on 0414 508 317 and, for the Falcons, who else but Nathan Evans, on 0413 554 759. At this stage, no criteria have been established as to what constitutes a “legend” at either of the clubs, but I am tipping names like Evans and Comensoli will be there. Both clubs are keen to hear from any former players in the lead-up to the Legends game. ■ The Asian Cup tournament has brought home the opportunity that soccer offers, capturing the hearts and minds of the youth of this country. I am using some home research here, but my son is besotted by the Socceroos. Soccer is a simpler game at grassroots level and international as well, which can’t be replicated by the AFL. Depending on the success of the Socceroos, I can see AFL footy facing some real issues in the immediate future.
Test toughens at Altona By Lance Jenkinson It was inevitable that Altona would have a lull at some point in the season – you just don’t go through the Bowls Victoria premier division undefeated. But it’s a relief that it happened in the middle of December and not March. The A’s lost the last two games before the holiday break, giving the runaway ladder leader something to think about over Christmas lunch. The message to the A’s was to avoid complacency in the second half of the season. “It was a bit of a wake-up call for us,” A’s skip Brett Foley told Star Weekly of these pre-break losses. “It came at a good time for us because over Christmas we had a chat about it and a think about it, and we came back ready to go again. “It’s a tight competition,” Foley said. “All the rest of the sides are pretty good – it’s
the best 10 sides in the state. We can’t rest on our laurels; we need to be on our game by the time the finals come around.” The A’s returned to the greens on Saturday, clearly wanting to atone for a disappointing December, and blasted Moonee Ponds to smithereens in a scary 117-49 scoreline. The big winner on the day was Mathew Rennex (36-10) by shots, while Foley (33-10) and Shane Fordham (33-14) were just as comprehensive. Brad Peck (15-15) coughed up the only point of the encounter in a rink draw. “It was a huge win,” Foley said. There are five games to go in the regular season and Altona would have to produce a collapse of epic proportions not to enter the finals with a double chance. The A’s lead second-placed Melbourne by 26 points, with third placed Bundoora RSL a whopping 41 behind.
The top two at season’s end will get the double chance. It’s all about getting back to early-season form for the A’s so the side can hit the ground running in the finals. Foley knows that on the day, the A’s are unbeatable, but he understands the threat posed by the other sides in the finals mix. “The ball is in our court and we back ourselves to beat anyone on any surface anywhere,” he said. “We know there’s not much between the top four or five sides. “All we’re thinking about it trying to get a good run in to the finals and trying to be on our game when the first final comes around,” Foley said. “We’ve put ourselves in a good position and have just got to take it.” Altona will travel to fourth-placed Clayton on Saturday for what should be a much tougher test.

■ This is a scenario that will impact on local footy as well. As a parent, which code is the best for my son? Obviously, he has the major say in the road he takes, but his mother and I have influence. I am very interested in knowing what readers have done here – do you let the child pick or do you have the final say? We don’t want to be seen as pushy parents – there is a fine line. I hope we can find it when the time comes. Kevin Hillier

Clean-out at the kennel By Lance Jenkinson It’s been an undeniably dramatic off-season for the Western Bulldogs. First coach Brendan McCartney went, then captain Ryan Griffen stepped up to the Giants; much-loved Brownlow medallist Adam Cooney traded to Essendon and now chief executive Simon Garlick says it’s time to go. The Bulldogs have no choice but to turn a new page in 2015. Simon Garlick, a former player and board member, was set for his fifth year as chief executive before he handed in his resignation. Bulldogs president Peter Gordon said Garlick had played a vital role, overseeing a tricky transition for the club. “Simon has played an important role for the club in a pivotal and difficult period of its history,” Gordon said. “We have rebuilt following three successive preliminary finals appearances and a cyclical downturn. That was coupled with the unfortunately timed loss of key players when GWS and GCS were introduced to the competition, and then key draft choices, which ordinarily would have been available to us, were given to the new clubs.” Gordon said Garlick was instrumental in increasing club revenue during his time at the top and had reduced debt levels while increasing spending on future player recruitment, development and coaching. He cited construction of the Edgewater gaming and social venue, a $27 million commercial venture and the biggest in the club’s history, as a hallmark of Garlick’s tenure. The venue will begin operating later this year. The club also reintroduced a VFL side, which played the bulk of its home games at Whitten Oval and went on to win the flag.

Mucci capped a brilliant season when she won the 200 metres in a time of 27.03 seconds and the high jump with a leap of 1.70 metres, before claiming second in the shot put. Her brother, Cosimo, edged out teammate Brad Ticehurst to claim victory in the under-18 men’s 200 metres. There were second placings for two of Williamstown’s 4 x 400-metre relay teams – the women’s quartet of Karoline Curtis, Rosie Close, Celeste Mucci and Eleni Gilden, and the men’s team of Cosimo Mucci, Amanuiel Taddese, Adam Dykes and Sweeney Preston. With the AV Shield behind them, athletes will start to ramp up their training efforts for next month’s state championships.

Garlick was also instrumental in securing a major sponsorship deal with Mission Foods and extending it a further three years, making it the longest deal in the club’s history. A partnership with the City of Ballarat to play games at a revamped Eureka Stadium was put in place and the club added to its community programs in that time, Gordon said. Garlick, who spent 13 years at the Bulldogs in total, said he felt the time was right to move into the next phase of his career. “I believe it’s in the best interests of the club, my family and myself at this time given the

Footscray took the fight up to Baseball Victoria summer league division 3 premiership favourite Ballarat City before going down 11-7 at McIvor Reserve. The Bulldogs have slipped two games out of the top four and face another stern test in the form of second-placed Ormond Glenhuntly on the road at EE Gunn Reserve on Sunday. In division 1, Williamstown Wolves were outclassed 14-1 by Essendon, while Newport Rams suffered a similarly heavy 11-1 defeat at the hands of Geelong.

Showdown for Eagles
Dogs show liking for the short form
By Lance Jenkinson Through actions, not words, Yarraville has stated loud and clear that its name can be spoken in the same breath as other elite clubs of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association’s north-west group. The Eagles bulldozed back into the top six in stunning fashion on Sunday evening, with a 169-run thrashing of premiership contenders Roxburgh Park-Broadmeadows at Yarraville Oval. Eagles captain Matthew Love told Star Weekly his side is set for a big January, with clashes against the top two clubs on the agenda, concluding with a two-day showdown against top-of-the-ladder Melton over the next two Saturdays. “It’s going to be a big job out there at Melton,” Love said. “They’re showing this season they’re still a strong club and are going to be hard to beat, but we’ll go in with full confidence.” The return of all-rounder Alex Hewet after a brief stint with Geelong in Premier Cricket will help the Eagles no end in their push to play in the finals. Hewet played one game for the Eagles prior to Christmas but really announced his arrival as man of the match against the Falcons, taking 6-44 off 21.1 overs to despatch the visitors for a mediocre 104 in just 43.1 overs. The Eagles are understandably chuffed to have Hewet back at the club, though in some ways it was like he never left. “He’s always loved the club and stayed involved with social events,” Love said. “He wasn’t really enjoying the drive out to Geelong every week, so we were very happy to have him back. “He knows we’ve got a good list and he thinks we can make finals … he’s going to help with that and did so on the weekend. “He gives us stability; you know what he’s going to give us every time he gets the ball and that’s consistency with line and length,” Love said. “His run-up and action is pretty economical, so he can keep going all day.” Patrick Prestidge returned to his early-season form with 3-21 off eight overs. The Eagles had 27 overs to face late on day one – enough time for openers Brad Shaw (51) and Brad Jones (37) to settle in. Shaw went on to make his first half century as part of an 84-run opening stand. “To be none down overnight made us relaxed as a group,” Love said. “The openers are playing their role well.

They’re working really hard and giving us stability up the top of the order.” With Shaw and Jones eating into a large chunk of the target, there was plenty of what Love described as “junk time” for the rest of the order to cash in. Love continued his glorious summer to make an unbeaten 100, his third ton of the season. The skipper has scored 454 runs at 113 to lead the competition’s averages.

“We still needed to make sure we finished off the day well, getting a decent score on the board, because percentage could well and truly play a role,” Love said. Veteran David Wolfe continued his solid form at the crease with 50 and teenager Josh Hahnel, fresh off a century with the Western Spirit representative side in the under-18 state championships, made 21 not out. The rout was complete, the Eagles finishing on 4-273.
Footscray Edgewater snapped a three-match losing streak with a 56-run mauling of FitzroyDoncaster in a Victorian Premier Cricket Twenty20 contest at Merv Hughes Oval on Sunday. The Bulldogs were desperate to atone for their loss to Melbourne University 24 hours earlier, and the recoil was certainly felt by the Lions. The Dogs’ batsmen enjoyed the releasing of shackles that comes in cricket’s free-wheeling shortest format and stood up to make 4-138 from their 20 overs. Travis Dean’s wonderful summer continued with 51 not out off 44 balls. He had made a half-century a day earlier and has amassed 606 runs at 75 this summer – good enough for the best aggregate in the competition. James Crosthwaite made a quickfire 22 off nine balls, while Dylan Kight (21), Hamish Winter-Irving (18), Dean Russ (13) and Anthony Barton (13no) made meaningful contributions. Fitzroy-Doncaster’s run chase progress was brought to a halt when they lost three wickets with the score on 30. The Bulldogs seized control of the game from that point and held the visitors to 9-82 from their 20 overs. Michael Nalesnyik (2-9), Winter-Irving (2-15) and Michael Kelly (2-18) did the damage with the ball for the Dogs. The Bulldogs, last season’s premiers, are still on the finals outer, sitting in 10th spot. They have decreased the gap to a finals berth to just three points after their win on Sunday. Next up for the Dogs are the struggling Greenvale Kangaroos in a two-dayer on the road at Greenvale Reserve, starting Saturday. Lance Jenkinson
Dudkiewicz pedals to criterium title in A-grade effort The Footscray Cycling Club returned to Altona’s Drake Boulevard for the Eric Turner Memorial Club criterium championships. Melton’s Dominik Dudkiewicz, 31, won the A-grade event. “The last few years I’ve had a great run into the champs and then inevitably I over-think the race, change my tactics and don’t get the job done,” he said. “This time, I decided to race as I always do as it seems to work: just keep attacking, attacking until a breakaway sticks.” The feature race was dominated by an early breakaway that saw Dudkiewicz, gun sprinter and rival Matthew Heath, triathlete-turnedbicycle-racer Alister Tubb and young gun Andrew Bonello jump away and build an unassailable lead. “The bunch chased really hard for a while and were right behind us,” Dudkiewicz said. “Alister asked me if we should keep going and I just said, ‘Hell yeah, don’t look back’ – the elastic will break and we’ll be away.” Sure enough, the elastic did break, but not without claiming Bonello as its first victim, the valiant young travel guide drifting back into the bunch. The trio of Dudkiewicz, Heath and Tubb built up a 30-second lead, but again the pace claimed
a victim, with Tubb losing the back wheels of Dudkiewicz and Heath in a momentary lapse of concentration, but to his credit he kept chasing the duo. Back in the bunch, Gen O’Rourke made the brave decision to go off the front and solo to the finish, stuck in the hellish no-man’s land between the bunch and the leaders. As the race drew to a close, Dudkiewicz and Heath started their end game, unaware that Tubb was closing in. After Dudkiewicz tried and failed to drop Heath, on the bell lap they found themselves accompanied by Tubb, who had smashed out a couple of hard laps to catch the pair. When it came to the sprint, Tubb had nothing left in the tank, with Dudkiewicz leading Heath down the straight and taking a well overdue criterium championship. “I was a bit worried that Matty might come around me in the last 50 metres, but I put it into the gutter and made sure if he did it would have to be on the windy side,” Dudkiewicz said. “Luckily, I kept my head down and crossed first.” The other winners were Darren Payne (B grade), Adam Kavanagh (C grade) and David MacPherson (D grade).
