“The announcement failed to address community concerns of the impact on Westgate Golf Club, Donald McLean Reserve and public land in the surrounding area.” Roads Minister Luke Donnellan said the distributor was essentially a renamed version of Labor’s truck action plan. Briefing notes prepared during the term of the former Brumby government suggested as many as 21 homes and 22 businesses could be directly impacted. “Detailed planning for the project was done as a part of the former Labor government’s truck action plan, which the Liberals dumped,” Mr Donnellan said. “We’re currently updating that work and will
consult with the community as we develop the next stages of the project.” Hobsons Bay council has held back from Labor’s proposal, saying there is a “paucity of detail” and “question marks over the impact of the distributor”. A council officer’s report states: “It is unclear whether … project costs outweigh any benefits gained by the removal of trucks from such a short section of the West Gate Freeway and Bolte Bridge.” Maribyrnong council has indicated support for the distributor but wants more detail. The government said the new distributor is expected to be completed in 2017.

Renewed pressure is on the state government to reveal which homes and businesses will be compulsorily acquired to make way for the West Gate road distributor. More than 40 properties, including sports grounds on the border of Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong, could be directly affected. The planned $500 million freight truck route off the West Gate Bridge includes on and off ramps between Williamstown Road and Hyde Street at Yarraville. Hobsons Bay council last October sought “a full investigation” into the impact of Labor’s
proposal on residents, municipal clubs and a reserve. Last week, state Coalition roads and infrastructure spokesman Ryan Smith said Premier Dan Andrews had promised a $500 million “shovel-ready” project before the election but still couldn’t provide details. He said Labor’s tender announcement last week was for just $40 million of roadworks on existing roads in Footscray. “What Daniel Andrews announced amounted to a set of traffic lights with no connection to the West Gate Freeway,” Mr Smith said. “This falls well short of his own promise to deliver a ‘shovel-ready’ project. 1148368-CA32-14

Australia Day 2015: (left to right) Cr Jason Price, Deputy Mayor Cr Paul Morgan, Cr Angela Altair, Geoff Mitchelmore, Mayor Cr Colleen Gates, Hue Man Dang, Cr Peter Hemphill, Cr Sandra Wilson, Cr Carl Marsich
2015 Citizens of the Year
GOWEST... where the skies are blue
Congratulations are due to our two new citizens of the year. The winners received their honour from the Mayor of Hobsons Bay Cr Colleen Gates at an Australia Day breakfast ceremony at Williamstown Town Hall.
...except for a rainbow signalling the start of this year’s Midsumma in the west. GOWEST is an initiative of western region councils, community organisations and businesses, bringing Melbourne’s colourful Midsumma festival to the western suburbs. It has run for six years now, each year getting bigger, brighter and more bombastic than the last.
Geoff Mitchelmore OAM was awarded Citizen of the Year for his outstanding commitment to art and culture, the local environment and the Hobsons Bay community. Recently Geoff played a pivotal role in establishing the Friends of Kororoit Creek, a group that has helped to beautify the stretch of creek between Boundary Road, Laverton North and Kororoit Creek Road, Altona North by planting in excess of 50,000 trees, shrubs and plants. This year’s Young Citizen of the Year is Hue Man Dang who, at only 17 years old, has already received the Deakin University Aspiration Award, the Melbourne University Kwong Lee Dow Scholarship Program, and a Western Chances Scholarship. As a member of her school’s Student Representative Council for the past three years, Hue Man has been proactive in the organisation of fundraisers, events and celebrations.
Summer Sounds Summer would not be summer without picnic rugs, food, relaxation and good music. Summer Sounds is an annual favourite of the Hobsons Bay events calendar, providing an afternoon of free music. From 2pm on Saturdays 7 and 21 February, Altona’s all about the soul and R&B with the addition of blues at the latter. Bring a picnic and deckchairs and spend the afternoon relaxing underneath the Moreton Bay figs at Logan Reserve. Then head to Commonwealth Reserve, Williamstown with its views of the Melbourne skyline where the music goes folk and country on Valentine’s Day, then embraces alternative roots indie for the last day of the month. There’s also a special Summer Sounds in your Neighbourhood (full details on the left). More information on all these events can be found at Council’s website.
Celebrating gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (GLBTIQ) communities across Melbourne’s west, the program features a wide array of activities. This week’s Story Time at Altona Library is a GOWEST special focussing on Rainbow Families to celebrate family diversity. No matter who you are, come down at 6.30pm and enjoy stories and songs with your family and our welcoming community. On Sunday 1 February it’s the 2015 Victorian Pride March. Join people from the west of Melbourne and march with pride under the white and green banner of GOWEST. Meet at the corner of Fitzroy Street and Lakeside Drive in St Kilda at 1.30pm fro a 2pm start. Or fancy some burlesque courtesy of the world’s most provocative variety show? Come down to The Substation, Newport on Thursday 5 or Saturday 7 February. Finucane & Smith’s Caravan Burlesque... flies in with suitcases bursting with awards, sequins and six-inch heels. The show’s called Wilder West! for a reason. For more details of all these events go to www.midsumma.org.au
Jack Madigan Reserve Lastly, there’s good news for Jack Madigan Reserve in the form of a huge makeover with recycled materials, native plantings, rock walls and terracing. Other improvements include street tree plantings, shade trees, seating and meeting spaces, circulation paths, and nature play opportunities. Works will begin in May and finish, all things going to plan, by the end of June. You’re invited to comment on the concept plan before 11 February. Gaming venues braced for gang hold-ups Police have privately warned gaming venues to be on high alert for a crime gang after a Laverton hotel was robbed at gunpoint for the third time in seven months. A Victoria Police spokeswoman said Club Laverton on Aviation Road was robbed on Tuesday night after three men stormed the venue. “Investigators have been told three men armed with a firearm and a machete entered the venue about 8.25,” she said. “They made demands for cash, threatened
staff and left the premises with an amount of money. No one was seriously injured during the incident.” Police would not say if the robbery was linked to a recent spate of similar crimes. “Victoria Police is investigating a number of armed robberies at gaming venues in the north-west metro area over the past few months,” the spokeswoman said. “The investigation is ongoing and no further information will be released at this time.” An industry insider, who asked not to
be named, said police had told them the robberies were believed to be linked. Police had previously said a Middle Eastern crime gang was believed responsible for eight robberies committed between last June and August, including a hold-up at Club Laverton on June 8. Police last year arrested a Roxburgh Park man, 22, and a 16-year-old boy in relation to the spate of robberies. The man, who is charged with seven armed robberies, one attempted armed robbery,
firearm possession and other offences, was remanded to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on January 29. The teenager, who is charged with four armed robberies, one attempted armed robbery, gun possession and other offences, was remanded to face a children’s court. Club Laverton’s TAB was robbed by three masked men on October 20 when one customer had a gun held to his head. Goya Dmytryshchak

Lost-dog culls slated By Goya Dmytryshchak Calls have been made for Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong councils to stop sending lost cats and dogs to Melbourne’s Lost Dogs’ Home amid growing community concerns about its high kill rate. The North Melbourne shelter has been accused of wrongful and unnecessary euthanasia after revelations that nearly half all unclaimed dogs were killed last year. Agriculture Minister Jaala Pulford last week announced her department would investigate concerns about practices and animal management at the home, which provides pound services for 13 Victorian councils.
Lost Dogs’ Home chairman Andrew Tribe said the shelter welcomed the investigation and would review its policies and practices with the aim of reducing the numbers of animals “put to sleep”. More than 11,000 people have signed a Change.org petition calling for an inquiry into why the shelter is killing so many dogs when owners are searching for them, with rescue groups pleading to be able to rehouse them. Seabrook resident May Pax said she was concerned that once an animal had been held by the home for eight days, it could be killed, even if it was microchipped. “Hobsons Bay council needs to either drop its contract with the Lost Dogs’ Home or, at the
least, apply pressure to ensure our pets have a greater chance of survival,” Ms Pax said. “Darebin council has put an additional term in its contract with the Lost Dogs’ Home that all animals be offered to a rescue group or placed for adoption before being euthanised.” Hobsons Bay chief executive Chris Eddy said the council would await the outcome of the investigation. “In the time that Hobsons Bay has worked with the Lost Dogs’ Home, we have never had any reason for concern in terms of their animal welfare practices,” Mr Eddy said. Maribyrnong council director Nigel Higgins said every effort was made to reunite lost pets with their owners before unclaimed animals were sent to the Lost Dogs’ Home.
Police are putting drivers on notice as children return to school this week. Operation Guardian will be running in Wyndham, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong from Thursday, with police keeping a close watch on school zones. Westgate division road policing adviser Senior Sergeant Damien Madden said police would be on the lookout for drivers breaking road laws and parking restrictions, and he warned motorists against doing the wrong thing. Council local laws officers will also be patrolling areas near schools, enforcing parking restrictions. Senior Sergeant Madden said the operation was aimed at keeping children safe. “Motorists are reminded that 40 km/h school zone and parking restrictions will be enforced,” he said. “Children are harder for drivers to spot in traffic and parked vehicles, and young children sometimes act unpredictably near traffic. “That’s why there are 40 km/h speed zones near schools. Please look out for and comply with speed signs and parking restrictions near schools.” Senior Sergeant Madden said parking restrictions around schools were necessary to keep children safe and to give drivers picking up and dropping off children a safer environment. “Park with consideration for other parents and for residents around schools,” he advised. Senior citizens in two community singing groups are in dire need after the retirement of their 96-year-old pianist. Hugh Vallance, who started playing piano for Williamstown Community Singers (WCS) 14 years ago, has reluctantly retired amid fears his replacement may be hard to find. “My problem now is I’m getting numbness in the ends of my fingers,” he said. “And I’ve become tone deaf. I can hear the sound, but I can’t always pick up the tune I’m playing.” Mr Vallance said his daughter-in-law, the group’s conductor, “feels lost” without his musical accompaniment. The WCS group meets Thursdays to rehearse classics from the 1940s-60s and for afternoon tea. Over the years, it has raised tens of thousands of dollars for

Mr Vallance, who was a Masonic organist for 57 years until 2013, said his retirement from piano had left another seniors’ group in the lurch. “After I’d been playing at Willy for two or three years, I got a call to play for the Newport elderly citizens’ community group, which I accepted,” he said. “I said, I don’t want any money for it; I wanted to do this as a voluntary business just to put something back into the local community. “Both those community singing groups have a problem at the moment.” If you can help, or for more information, call Betty or Dianne on 0419 329 989. VU puts students on path to uni By Priscilla Moca More than 300 more secondary school graduates have the chance to take on degree courses next month thanks to a new Victoria University initiative. The new VU learning pathway has boosted first-round offers through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) by 7 per cent by taking advantage of the institute’s joint TAFE and university status. Business course offers rose by 25 per cent, ‘law’ offers rose by 17 per cent and ‘arts’ by
15 per cent. Vocational education and training (VET) offers jumped by 27 per cent. Vice-chancellor Peter Dawkins said the change was in line with VU’s goal of giving all determined students a chance. “With different exit points, students can leave with a qualification that suits their career aspiration,” Professor Dawkins said. “We have both higher education and VET programs for students who want to be well prepared for trades and para-professional roles, but many VET students choose to progress into higher education after their VET program.”

West Gate work starts this year By Benjamin Millar Work on the $40 million first stage of the $500 million West Gate Distributor will be under way by the end of the year, according to the state government. Expressions of interest opened last Wednesday for works to begin on a project aiming to take 5000 trucks a day off the West Gate Bridge. Stage one works include re-routing trucks
down a widened Moreland Road, as well as strengthening and widening Shepherd Bridge to six lanes. The Maribyrnong River crossing will include bicycle lanes separated from traffic to improve safety for the 1600 cyclists using the bridge each day. The tolled distributor will include new West Gate Freeway on and off ramps to accommodate the expected increase of trucks visiting Swanson Dock to 12,000 each day

within 20 years. Community consultation on the project will begin next month. Premier Daniel Andrews said shortlisted contractors would be invited to submit tenders in May, the contract would be
awarded mid-year, and construction would start by the end of the year. “Building the West Gate Distributor and removing 50 of our most dangerous and congested level crossings will make it easier for Victorians to get to work every morning,” Mr Andrews said. Roads Minister Luke Donnellan said the West Gate Distributor would make driving between the city and the western suburbs faster and safer.
Music eases mum’s pain An Altona mother who lost her young daughter to cancer five years ago has found some solace through music therapy. Laurel Parkinson’s daughter, Isobel, was diagnosed with neuroblastoma as an infant and battled the cancer for about a year. “I was a musician in the past and then I met somebody and we ended up getting together and starting a family,” she said. “Everything was really good and we were actually arranging for our wedding and then my daughter was diagnosed with neuroblastoma. “She was two when she was diagnosed and I had a six-month-old son. “When I was in hospital, she had these music therapy sessions. I saw how much joy she got out of it. I don’t know, you can’t even explain; it was just amazing. “That’s what inspired me to be a music therapist. “After she died, I went through devastating grief and just terrible, terrible things and then I kind of picked myself back up.”
Ms Parkinson is halfway through her masters in music therapy degree at Melbourne University’s Conservatorium of Music. Her course includes research into the effects of music on children with autism, on adults with brain injury, teenagers with anorexia and the elderly with dementia. “This year, I have to write a thesis and the subject I’ll be researching is the benefits of songwriting with an older person with first-stage dementia,” Ms Parkinson said. From February 1, she takes up a Sunday residency at Williamstown’s Customs House Hotel, playing acoustic sets from 2-5pm. She’s also recording a CD with her band, Laurel and The Painkillers. For more information, visit the Laurel Parkinson page on Facebook. Goya Dmytryshchak Laurel Parkinson returned to music after her daughter died of cancer. (Damjan Janevski)

Raids smash drug syndicate By Charlene Macaulay Drug taskforce detectives have smashed a significant organised crime syndicate after raids across Melbourne’s western and northern suburbs last week. As part of Operation Kanji, police last Friday seized more than $10.6 million worth of drugs and arrested nine people after executing 13 search warrants across residential and commercial properties at Sunshine West, Braybrook and Preston.
Sunshine West men Huyen Pham, Quang Dong and Duc Nguyen, Cairnlea residents Thanh Dinh and Jimmy Phan, and Braybrook man Loc Tran were later charged with various drug offences and fronted Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Saturday. A 35-year-old Preston man was also charged with possessing a firearm, possessing a prohibited weapon and possessing methylamphetamine, and has been bailed to appear at court at a later date. Amongst the haul were 2800 cannabis plants, 25 kilograms of dried cannabis, more
than half a kilo of heroin, more than a kilo of ice and cocaine. Crime Command’s Assistant Commissioner Stephen Fontana said Operation Kanji had been targeting the distribution of commercial quantities of heroin, ice and cocaine, as well as large commercial quantities of cannabis, over the past four months. Mr Fontana said among the properties raided were cannabis ‘grow houses’, which have the capacity to generate hundreds of thousands of dollars in profit each crop. “We now know this particular organisation
is extremely well established and is involved in a range of commodities,” Mr Fontana said. “Our investigation started off looking into this particular group for trafficking heroin, and we established they are allegedly involved in cannabis, ice and cocaine. “Unfortunately, we have a high demand for these types of illicit drugs in Victoria,” he said. “We see every day the impact these drugs have on the people who use them, their families and the entire community, and it’s a terrible toll.”
Sunburn’s sorry sequel cancer was commonly divided into melanoma and non-melanoma categories, with basal cell and squamous cell cancers the most common types of non-melanoma cancer. Every Friday, Dr Howard runs a skin cancer clinic at Western Hospital. During 2013-14, more than 700 skin cancer patients were treated there. She said melanoma was common among people from the age of 18 onwards, while other types of skin cancers were more prevalent in older people. “With melanoma, it seems particularly important not to get sunburnt, whereas with the other types of cancers it seems to be more related to long-term sun exposure, even without burning.” Dr Howard said it was important to cover up in the sun and get checked for any new sun spots or moles that change colour. When Wayne Lanning was referred to a dermatologist for a case of psoriasis, a skin cancer diagnosis was the last thing on his mind. But that’s just what happened when his doctor spotted a freckle on the back of his right leg five years ago. “I had shorts on and, just as I walked out the door, she asked if she could check out the freckle,” Mr Lanning said. That freckle turned out to be a level two melanoma, which was removed a week later. Today, the 45-year-old Newport resident has become hyper-vigilant about being sun-smart, and recently he had a lump on his ear removed. It was not cancerous. “I got sunburnt a lot as a child … which has now caught up with me,” Mr Lanning said. “I’ve now wised up to the fact that whenever I go out in the sun, I slip, slop, slap.” Western Health head of dermatology Anne Howard, who treated Mr Lanning, said skin

Community champions
A top citizen is Uncle Roy
Altona North’s Geoff Mitchelmore has been named Hobsons Bay’s Australia Day citizen of the year for his contribution to arts and culture, community services and the local environment over 50 years. Mayor Colleen Gates said Mr Mitchelmore was “a truly worthy recipient and true champion of our community”. “He’s been involved with the Altona City Theatre for 20 years and served as a member of the Altona North High School council for 13 years … he has been the driving force behind Friends of Lower Kororoit Creek and in more recent years an active member of the Brooklyn Residents Action Group,” she said. Mr Mitchelmore cited the opening of the Altona theatre as one of his proudest moments. “It was eight years of my life that I spent just chasing [the former Altona] council to get that theatre there and that was terrific,” he said. Another highlight was being involved in building a replica of the schooner Enterprize, the ship that carried the first European settlers to Melbourne in 1835. “I sailed it for another five years and one of the greatest moments was when we took it across Bass Strait,” he said. The Friends of Lower Kororoit Creek president said the birth of his environmental group and seeing the Barnes Road Bridge built were two more of his proudest moments. “To see that weed-infested hell hole, that I wouldn’t allow my kids to go anywhere near, change into a corridor of green was just an amazing transformation,” he said. The young citizen of the year award has gone to Hue Man Dang, 17, a Bayside College student, who was described as devoting herself to “selflessly bettering our community”.

HONOURS AND AWARDS
By Goya Dmytryshchak and Cameron Tait A Williamstown economist, a Laverton builder, Altona Meadows Italian community leader and a Footscray refugee advocate are among those recognised in Australia Day honours. Previously described as a “renegade economist”, Williamstown’s Adrian Pagan has been appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia. Professor Pagan was awarded for his long service to tertiary education, development of public policy research, contributions to professional and financial organisations, and as an author of more than 140 papers, articles and books. When appointed to the Reserve Bank board in 1995, Mr Pagan was described as a “knock-about character”. He said what he really liked about his appointment as an Officer of the Order was that it was an Australian award. “I guess if I go back to my renegade past, I can construct an argument for why I shouldn’t get it as there are lots of people out there who do amazing things,” Mr Pagan said. “I’m very much a product of the Australian education system, even to doing my doctorate here – and that was a bit unusual in the 1960s. “So I like to think of this as a tribute to all those people who inspired and directed me in thinking about econometrics and its uses.” Laverton builder John Belani, who arrived in Australia as a Slovakian refugee in 1959, said he couldn’t have imagined he would one day be
awarded one of his adopted country’s highest honours. He was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for services to the Laverton community. Over many years, Mr Belani has been dedicated to numerous causes, including the Slovak Social Club in Laverton and St Matthew’s Slovak Lutheran congregation. He donated land to build the Christ the Lord Slovak Lutheran Church in Laverton in 1974, helped build and establish the Hoppers Crossing Club, and has been recognised as a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary. Recalling his own experiences, Mr Belani has become a strong supporter of people trying to escape the civil war in South Sudan, funding an orphanage named Anna Belani, after his wife. “I thank god he brought us to this lucky country,” Mr Belani said. “If I can make it here anybody can.” Altona Meadows’ Egilberto Martin, who became honorary secretary of the Brooklyn Ratepayers Committee in 1980, was also honoured with an OAM for service to Victoria’s Italian community. He’s a founding member of the Fogolar Furlan Club and lecturer on Friulian (alpine region in Italy’s extreme north-east) culture. Footscray’s Judith Bainbridge, co-founder of the River Nile Learning Centre, received an OAM for her service to the community, especially to refugees. Ms Bainbridge has also served on the Footscray Legal Service committee and was volunteer manager for the Anglican Church of Footscray’s Sudanese Welfare Centre.

MILDRED ANDREW
Turning 100 with honour Mildred “Milly” Andrew received a special 100th birthday present on Monday when she received a Medal of the Order of Australia. Born and raised in Williamstown before moving to an Altona Meadows nursing home, Mrs Andrew was recognised for service to children with disabilities. She was a carer and manager at the former Footscray Spastic Children’s Centre from 1953 to 1972, and helped raise funds for the Scope Chislon centre in Maidstone – for people with multiple disabilities and high support needs – where she was a carer for more than 20 years. Mrs Andrew first cared for a child with a disability 60 years ago when a friend had a son born with cerebral palsy.
“He had to attend the children’s hospital … she got talking to other mothers in there, and must have told them about me minding her little boy. “Within the year, I was looking after four and five so then we decided, with the mothers concerned, that we’d try and have a club,” Mrs Andrew said. By the time she resigned, there were 80 children and many specialised services. “We had no government assistance in those days so we had to raise the money ourselves. “I got a lot of satisfaction from it and I’ve got some wonderful memories of the days we spent there, and of the parents.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Mercy waits on expansion talks By Cameron Tait Health Minister and Altona MP Jill Hennessy will meet Werribee Mercy Hospital management to discuss plans for an $85 million expansion, including a critical care unit. A lack of critical-care facilities has forced the hospital to transfer between 85 and 90 patients a month from its emergency department to other hospitals, which have the capacity to provide intensive, coronary and high-dependency services. The next stage of the Mercy’s master plan includes building a critical-care unit, six operating theatres and 56 additional in-patient beds. In the lead-up to last November’s state election, Labor promised funding for hospitals across the state, including $200 million for a women and children’s facility at Sunshine Hospital, but Werribee Mercy was overlooked. At the time, Mercy Health chief executive adjunct professor Stephen Cornelissen said further government funding was essential to help meet the needs of the electorate’s rapidly growing population. “With the closest critical-care unit more than 22 kilometres away, few could argue that the Wyndham community faces some of the poorest access to health services in metropolitan Melbourne,” he said. However, last week, Ms Hennessy told Star Weekly she could offer no guarantees. “There’s been $1 billion in cuts to the health system in recent years and, as a government, we have to set priorities,” she said. “We don’t have an unending bucket of resources, but we’ll continue to work with the Mercy to help relieve some of these demand pressures.” On the issue of the area’s police shortage, Ms
Health Minister and Altona MP Jill Hennessy meets Point Cook paramedics. (Damjan Janevski)
Hennessy said she had asked Police Minister Wade Noonan to meet with local officers to discuss resources. At a rally in Werribee last September, Police Association secretary Ron Iddles claimed Wyndham would need an extra 159 officers over the next five years to meet the state average police-to-population ratio. “I’m committed to making sure our
community not only feels safe but has confidence in police and their capacity,” Ms Hennessy said. “I’m aware of the challenges and, as local member, I’ll continue to advocate to ensure we have adequate [police] resources.” With the decline of the manufacturing industry, highlighted by the upcoming closure of Toyota’s Altona plant, Ms Hennessy said jobs would be a major focus.
“We have significant issues, particularly when it comes to youth unemployment,” she said. “I’ll be doing whatever I can to advocate for, and generate, new local job opportunities.” Ms Hennessy said it was “very important” that the government deliver on its election promises, including a new senior school in Point Cook and removing Cherry and Werribee streets level crossings.

Laneway festa set for sell-out A stellar line-up of local and international musicians will descend on Footscray next month for the 2015 Laneway Festival. Returning to its Footscray riverside home on February 7, the festival has cemented a reputation for attracting the planet’s hottest breakthrough acts. St. Vincent, FKA Twigs and Flying Lotus will be joined by homegrown favourites Courtney Barnett, Pond and Dune Rats. The eclectic line-up also includes Caribou, Jungle and Future Islands, alongside Mac Demarco, Benjamin Booker, Perfect Pussy, and many more. Fewer than 200 tickets remain for the Melbourne show after the Singapore leg sold out last week. Details and bookings: lanewayfestival.com

Footscray writer Jo Case is beginning a new chapter in her love affair with books. Ms Case will take up the role as program manager of the Melbourne Writers Festival next month. It’s a dream job for a bookworm who lives and breathes all things writing. She will be responsible for developing and delivering more than 400 events, featuring close to 500 writers across 50 Melbourne venues. Far from being daunted, the Sun Bookshop bookseller and author of Boomer & Me – a memoir of motherhood and raising a son with Asperger’s – is relishing the challenge. “The festival is the heart of this city of literature. It’s turning 30 this year and has grown along with Melbourne as a literary hub.” Ms Case is no stranger to the Melbourne Writers Festival (MWF), having worked on the programming committee for a number of years and appeared at the festival as a writer. “A lot of the job is about making connections, bringing people together,” she said. Festival director Lisa Dempster said Ms Case was appointed as program manager after a worldwide search for the ideal candidate. “Jo Case has been involved with all aspects of Melbourne’s writing, publishing and bookselling industry for more than 20 years,” Ms Dempster said. “Alongside her wealth of literary knowledge, she is bringing some exciting ideas that will assist MWF to inspire and delight local audiences.” Ms Case says her own favourite writer changes regularly, as she gets newly enthused. Thumbs up to violence inquiry By Benjamin Millar A Footscray-based women’s health service has welcomed details of the state government’s royal commission into family violence. Family violence reports to Women’s Health West (WHW) – which provides support in the majority of family violence incidents across the western suburbs – were up 54 per cent last year. Yet funding rose only two per cent. WHW chief executive Robyn Gregory told Star Weekly that with 6209 reports in the past financial year her team was struggling to keep up. “This is the most severe spike in demand we’ve seen in the 20 years we’ve provided family violence services in the western region,” Dr Gregory said. Premier Daniel Andrews last week released the proposed terms of reference for a royal commission into the state’s most common form of violence against women and the leading cause of death and disability in Victorian women under 45. From next month, royal commission chairwoman Justice Marcia Neave will be tasked with finding ways to prevent family violence, improve early intervention, better support victims and bring perpetrators to account. The royal commission has been sparked by an 83 per cent rise in family violence incidents reported to Victoria Police between 2009-10 and 2013-14 to 65,393 incidents – one-third of all police work and a $3 billion
hit to the economy. Mr Andrews said the family violence “national emergency” was Victoria’s top law and order issue. “We need a system that protects the vulnerable, punishes the guilty and saves lives,” he said. “The royal commission will give us the answers we need and nothing will be off limits.” Prevention of Family Violence Minister Fiona Richardson said the situation must

be made better. “This royal commission will change lives and attitudes,” she said. “It will shine a light on the problem and help victims and survivors of family violence to take a powerful step.” Victorian Council of Social Service chief executive Emma King said the broad range of issues contained in the terms of reference was a good starting point for the inquiry. “It’s important to hear the voices of people with lived experience of family violence,” she said. “But survivors who choose to tell their story will need access to support and advice throughout the royal commission process.” Opposition spokeswoman Georgie Crozier said there was also a need to ensure action to protect families was not delayed.

Time to hit the court If you fancy yourself as the next Nick Kyrgios or Sam Stosur, head to Saltwater Reserve in Point Cook this Saturday and test your skills at Wyndham’s newest tennis facility. Saltwater Tennis Centre is holding its open day and everybody is invited to have a hit. “We welcome all members of the community, whether you’ve played before or are just looking to start out – we’ve got a range of programs and competitions starting in February,” Mr Singh said. Part of Wyndham Council’s $26 million Saltwater Reserve development, the centre includes eight hard courts, four of which have floodlights, and a pavilion with community spaces, change rooms and a kiosk. Hellish days, then haven By Goya Dmytryshchak A book detailing the life story of a Seaholme resident and refugee from Egypt’s Suez Canal crisis will be launched in March. English-born Helen Said spent 12 years painstakingly researching the book about her father, titled Five Egyptian Pounds: the story of George Said. She said the story was timely because it details her parents’ lives as British subjects in Egypt during the creation of Palestine, and throughout the first two Arab-Israeli wars. In 1956, Arab revolutionaries had nationalised the Suez Canal, the British had destroyed Almaza air base, and the Greek-Maltese Said family was placed under house arrest. George and his wife, Maroula, together with their baby daughter, Tassie, were given 10 days to leave the country. “They were quite young and very scared when these wars were on, so it’s helped them to make sense of all the events and get them in some sort of perspective,â€? Ms Said said. “The family likes it and the cousins are saying to me things like, ‘Oh, I’ve never understood what we were doing in Egypt or why we had to leave’. “I learned more of the circumstances about the formation of Israel ‌ and so that tended to make me more aware of why we have some of the international ethnic tensions that we have today.â€? The Said family left for London, arriving at Heathrow Airport with two suitcases of clothes and five worthless Egyptian pounds. They lived as penniless refugees, during which time Mr Said joined the British trade union movement and became an advocate for change.
Helen with her parents Maroula and George Said. (Shawn Smits)
Eventually, the family’s frozen assets were released and they migrated to Australia in 1962. “It was a lifelong dream of my dad’s to come to Australia, Ms Said said. “Certainly, the climate suited therm better here, and it was less of that British class system.
Y D R L R O HU S % 0 5
The book also details Mr Said’s involvement in the early days of Australian multiculturalism and his interest in the welfare of refugees. It is published by Equilibrium Books and will be available on Amazon kindle. More at fiveegyptianpounds.com.au

The charitable work of the Footscray Lions Club was eulogised in Footscray Court on Monday when four members faced charges over a raffle. Summing up, the magistrate, Mr Pfeifer, commented that “the Lions Club certainly has done great work for charity”. However, he said, the fact was that cash prizes were not permitted in the raffle in question. Mr Pfeifer nevertheless took a lenient view and adjourned the charges, without recording a conviction.
Telephone box vandalism in Footscray and the western suburbs is worse than in any other part of the state. In parts of West Footscray and in Housing Commission areas, PMG technicians from Footscray Fault Despatch Centre have carried out repairs to the same phone boxes three days in succession. The ever-increasing vandalism in the west is costing the PMG Department well over $100,000 a year and adding to the national phone box vandalism bill of $3 million a year.
Port Phillip sea pilots are pulling out all stops to prevent eviction from their headquarters in Williamstown. The pilots, who have been tenants of the Nelson Pl building for the past 112 years, fear that the federal government may hand the Customs House to the Maritime Trust for use as a museum. Sea Pilots’ acting secretary Captain Brian Lewis said according to historic records, the government had no right to hand the building over to the Maritime Trust.
The Altona Village Traders Association has given the thumbs up to a proposed planning amendment that would change the face of the Pier Street activity centre and its neighbourhood, reinforcing the district’s role as a business hub. Hobsons Bay Council is looking at changing the planning scheme in the area through Amendment C51 to give effect to the Altona Beach Activity Precinct Urban Design Framework, which identifies the goals for the area’s physical, social and economic future over the next 10-15 years.

Where the livin’ is easy Charlene Macaulay visits Adelaide and finds a lot in common with what she loves about Melbourne – it just unfolds at a slower pace. Then, not far away, there’s the magnificent wineries “Why Adelaide?” That’s the question I kept hearing after I’d told friends where I was spending my holidays. Well, shame on them! Apart from the stunning wine regions South Australia is renowned for, its capital city is a funky hive of food, culture and entertainment. For Melburnians familiar with good coffee, great restaurants and street art along laneways, Adelaide offers all that and more, at a refreshingly slower pace. Adelaide is an 80-minute flight from Melbourne or an eight-hour drive if you prefer a road trip. If driving, my advice is to leave early in the morning – say, 4 – to avoid traffic. We chose to stay at The Playford hotel, on North Terrace and opposite the Convention Centre and City Casino, with the State Library, SA Museum and Art Gallery a little further down the road. The Playford offers spacious, stylish and, importantly for this traveller, clean rooms. We stayed in a studio spa suite. The Playford restaurant, which has won the gong of ‘Best Restaurant in Accommodation’ for the past three years at the Australian Hotels Association SA awards, is a must-try for both its buffet breakfast and fine-dining dinner menu. The only downside is internet access. Apart from a daily free Wifi hour in the downstairs bar and lounge, guests incur a daily fee to access it. A great thing about Adelaide is that pretty much everything is within walking distance. Once outside the hotel, tourists are spoilt for

Tastebuds will be tempted by Jamie Oliver’s restaurant Jamie’s Italian, by Sean Connelly’s Sean’s Kitchen at the Adelaide Casino, and the range of eclectic pubs, cafes and restaurants along Rundle and Gouger streets. Also in the heart of the city is the Adelaide Zoo, which features giant pandas Wang Wang and Funi, who are on loan from China as part of a conservation program to protect endangered wildlife.
Ten kilometres from the city is the charming seaside resort of Glenelg, where you can swim with wild dolphins. For wine lovers, the only problem with being in South Australia is deciding which wine regions to visit. Having long been fans of Taylors Shiraz, we drove 90 minutes out of

Adelaide to visit the Taylors Estate in the Clare Valley, which has more than 40 cellar doors stretching between the towns of Auburn and Clare. The region is also gaining a reputation for boutique beer, and we stopped at Hop and Vine in Auburn to try out a “flight”; that is, a sample
of four of their craft beers. We also spent a day driving through the famous Barossa Valley, including the 10 kilometre-long Seppeltsfield Road, which is flanked by palm trees and is home to some of the Barossa’s most famous wineries and gourmet destinations. You might need a week to see everything
this region has to offer, but the Maggie Beer Farm Shop, Jacobs Creek cellar door and the Barossa Valley Cheese Company are must-sees if you have only a few hours to spare. So, when planning your next holiday, don’t ask yourself, why Adelaide; ask how you’re going to fit in everything there is to see, eat and do.

Lessons for life A growing number of studies show that music lessons in childhood can do something perhaps more valuable for the brain than childhood gains: provide benefits for the long run, as we age, in the form of an added defense against memory loss, cognitive decline, and diminished ability to distinguish consonants and spoken words. Not only that, you may well get those
benefits even if you haven’t tickled the ivories, strummed the guitar, or unpacked your instrument from its case in years. And dividends could even be in store if you decide to pick up an instrument for the very first time in midlife or beyond. Piano teachers across the world will have heard, “I wish I had learned piano as a child” time and time again. Adults assume that if they
didn’t learn to play piano as a child, then it’s simply too late. Yet not only are adult piano lessons more often than not extremely rewarding, but adults have a number of advantages in learning piano compared to children. Children very often have to be persuaded to practice and attend piano lessons. Adults, on the other
hand, don’t need to be dragged, kicking and screaming, to their piano teachers. Adults also have highly developed logical and critical thinking skills. It is often thought that playing music is a purely creative, right-brained act, but this is by no means the case. As the most emotional of the arts, music indeed favors the emotional right brain compared to the rational left.
Gymnastics Birthday Parties Holiday Program Musical Theatre Jazz Tap
Playing music without understanding these essentials would be like learning to pronounce syllables in a foreign language but having little or no idea what the words mean. Another advantage is that adults can learn complex concepts much more easily and understand technical explanations. This makes it possible for adults to learn music theory and analysis far more easily than children.

A great raw deal With a new year often come new resolutions. For some, resolutions include aiming for healthier lifestyles and better eating. Eating more raw food is something to consider. Eating raw food is simply about consuming fresh fruit and vegetables, nuts and seeds that haven’t been cooked, processed or had preservatives added to them. Eating raw food can also be about ditching dairy and “bad” oils. Obesity and over-eating are often attributed to processed foods that lack fibre. Raw foods such as fruit and vegetables can be full of fibre and vitamins that satisfy for longer. Eating raw doesn’t mean going without desserts or treats. Raw food sweet snack and dessert recipes can replace processed sugar, butter, chocolate, milk and oil with raw and organic options such as agave (plant-based sweetener), almond or cashew butter, coconut oil, almond or coconut milk and cacao. Using such ingredients instead of processed varieties may give your body the nutrients it is seeking while also delighting your tastebuds. Changing to eating more raw food can be as simple as replacing a sugary cereal or white toast at breakfast with a fruit smoothie or

green shake, taking a salad to work for lunch instead of visiting the local café and eating more vegetables for dinner. Eating raw means there is less need to go to supermarkets as most greengrocers and health food shops have what’s required for many recipes. If eating healthier this year sounds like a good idea, put down that chocolate bar and head to a raw food website such as www.rawfoodforlife. org for great replacement suggestions. Rebecca Miller.

This deceptively spacious house is sure to delight its new owners with all the luxury on offer. At the front are four large bedrooms, including the main with walk-in wardrobe and en suite. Of the remaining three, one has a built-in wardrobe and the other two share a walk-in wardrobe and en suite. The main bathroom is opposite the laundry. Down the back, double doors lead to a study, while a large, open-plan family-meals zone has polished floorboards and a split-system. Also back here is a kitchen with more cupboards than could possibly be filled, a walk-in pantry and stainless-steel appliances, including a dishwasher. Features are evaporative cooling , ducted heating and ceiling fans. A sliding door and bi-fold doors lead to a great undercover deck; beyond this, an in-ground pool and shed are surrounded by low-maintenance landscaped gardens.
With a grocer next door, and a supermarket, eateries, Newport train station and Hoffman Reserve within a walk, it’s likely the new owner of this property will rarely need to use their car. But the location isn’t the only thing going for it. It’s well maintained and has plenty of space. Three large bedrooms (with split-systems) are upstairs; two have built-in robes and the main has a walk-in and en suite. There’s also a bathroom and a pair of balconies up here. Downstairs has ample room to entertain in a lounge room at the front. Polished floorboards enhance an open-plan family-meals zone with split-system, and kitchen with stainless-steel appliances (including dishwasher) and oodles of storage space. A powder room is also down here. A low-maintenance llandscaped courtyard and lock-up garage with internal access are extra treats at a property that also has appeal for investors.

Homebuyers looking for a bit of luxury may find this townhouse hard to pass up. High ceilings and polished floorboards are the first thing to impress downstairs where a lounge room is separated from the family-meals zone by a powder room. The kitchen has stone benchtops, glass splashback and freestanding stainless-steel cooker and dishwasher. Upstairs are three spacious bedrooms; two have built-in wardrobes, while the main has a walk-in and a fully tiled en suite. A fully tiled bathroom is also up here. Ducted heating and cooling, an alarm, courtyard with deck, single garage and additional off-street parking space for one car behind electric gates are included. The property is in an enviable spot with Williamstown beach, shops, North Williamstown train station, Williamstown North Primary school, Victoria University’s Newport Campus and parks all nearby.
For location and liveabililty, this well-maintained property in popular Williamstown is a winner. The rendered residence has three spacious bedrooms with built-in wardrobes – two downstairs and one up - and two bathrooms and a powder room, each on different levels. Polished floorboards flow through the lounge room, dining room, and kitchen where black granite benchtops and black-tiled splashbacks contrast well with white cupboards and stainless-steel appliances, including a dual-drawer dishwasher. A carpeted rumpus room with pitched ceiling is separate. The convenience of ducted heating, cooling and vacuum are included, while plantation shutters and roman blinds are a classy touch. And there’s a low-maintenance courtyard, two balconies and a single garage. The north-facing townhouse is within walking distance of The Strand, C Bates Reserve, the beach,

still could do with more storage spaces and cup holders. The dashboard looks great with silver surrounds to the gauges and white graphics. The back seat fits two adults comfortably, with good legroom for such a small car, though headroom is pretty tight, particularly with the sunroof installed – in a car like this you’d want the sunroof installed.
(Supplied)
Last year I test drove Alfa Romeo’s spirited little MiTo and enjoyed how it instantly went from economical city car to a gutsy, curve-loving, sports-hatch at the flick of a switch. Thankfully, the updated MiTo QV (Quadrifoglio Verde), while slightly more refined, is still a fun car that provides a uniquely stylish alternative to the plethora of two-door hatches on the market, even if it isn’t the most practical. What I still like most about the MiTo is the DNA driving settings (Dynamic/Normal/ All-weather), which you select with a switch on the centre console. As I remarked then, the D should stand for Diablo. It turns this little town car into a wicked hatch, capable of 0-100km/h in 7.5 seconds, with a high-revving gear ratio that gets plenty from the tiny but powerful 1.4l turbo engine. You can feel the boost when you flick the switch, as well as the stiffer suspension and steering through the 18-inch wheels. This made for a very enjoyable driving experience and I pretty much kept it in D mode even when driving to the shops. Back in normal mode, the MiTo shows its city street smarts, with light handling and fuel efficiency of about 6.6 litres per 100 kilometres, enhanced by the ‘Start&Stop’, a feature that you can select to automatically turn the engine off when you’re at a standstill. It’s pretty disconcerting at first, but because the engine starts when you take your foot off the brake, it’s ready to go when you accelerate. Nothing has changed under the bonnet but the six-speed automatic gearbox seemed to be more responsive than last time. The updated MiTo QV has new interior styling that makes it feel roomier though it
Under the hatch, the 270-litre cargo area will fit your shopping, but forget about fitting your golf bag or picking people up from the airport. Infotainment is via a five-inch U-connect screen that connects easily to your phone/MP3 device via Bluetooth or USB and plays music through Bose speakers. The voice control works well. Other features include dual-zone climate

control and rain-sensing windscreen wipers. Sometimes upgrades take the soul out of cars like this, but the MiTo QV is still a fun and versatile car for someone with a few extra dollars wanting a ride with personality. SPORT Jacobs returns to coach interleague side The much-admired Brett Jacobs will return to the Western Region Football League to coach its interleague side for a second year. Jacobs, who stepped down from his senior coaching gig with the Sunshine Kangaroos, citing work and family commitments, will be able to quench his thirst for coaching in a lighter capacity. He was the inaugural coach of the WRFL’s senior representative side at last year’s AFL Victoria metropolitan championships, leading the side to a 36-point win over the Southern Football League and moving it up in the metro rankings. This year, the WRFL is set for a tougher test against Eastern Football League on March 28, and Jacobs is seen as the man who can lead the west to an upset result. “Brett’s performance last year was outstanding, from the preparation leading
into the event as well as on game day. He was a complete professional,” WRFL chairman of selectors Steve Thom said. “He has a lot of respect from the playing group and his enthusiasm and communication are second to none.” Thom is not worried about Jacobs stepping down from club level. He actually thinks it will be beneficial for the interleague squad to have a coach whose sole focus is on beating the EFL. “He has more time during the pre-season to put all his efforts into the 2015 interleague carnival, which will no doubt be of great benefit for the team,” Thom said. Albion coach Aaron Tymms will again be one of Jacobs’ assistants, along with new appointments Brad Julier (Port Colts) and James Condos (Deer Park). Julier brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the
table. A past Barry Priest Medal winner and premiership player for the Colts, he was an assistant at VFL level with the Box Hill Hawks. “In my opinion, Brad is one of the best ruckmen the competition has seen in the last decade, so his onfield experience as well as his time at Box Hill will come in handy for our on-ball and midfield players,” Thom said. “Having also played in the rep squad last year, he knows all about the passion required for the match so we’re really excited that he’s come on board.” Condos led Deer Park to the 2011 WRFL division two flag and was once on the Western Bulldogs’ list. A noted goalkicker, Condos is likely to take charge of the forward line. Lance Jenkinson
IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ I think sledging issues have gotten out of hand. In the past few weeks, I’ve heard opinions expressed that to me don’t ring true. There is no room for racist comments or personal attacks, we all know that, but banter between players is part and parcel of the game of cricket. I agree that bullying has no place in the game either, but it will be a sad day when a fast bowler can’t ask a batsman if he would like a piano instead of a bat because he might be able to play that better than the ball he just missed. Unfortunately, the humour seems to have gone out of the banter and it has become more personal. Is that true at local level, where I have seen a few words escalate into some very physical encounters? I am keen to hear from current players in regards to where the banter sits these days. ■ Simon Garlick’s resignation from the Bulldogs is yet another major change to the structure of the club in the past few months. The CEO, senior coach and captain of 2014 are all gone. Whether this is good or bad is irrelevant – it is fact. The Bulldogs have a very big year coming up with the return of AFL football to Whitten Oval in a few weeks and the opening of the social facility at Edgewater mid year. The new chief executive is going to have to hit the ground running. Simon served the club well and I hope he will continue to be involved as a past player because that’s an area where the Bulldogs have struggled to maintain a connection between the club and its past. ■ The WRFL farewells Lyn McLeod from the office this week. Lyn has done a great job over recent years and is heading to Essendon Football Club as events manager. Also in the WRFL, former Spotswood premiership coach Chris O’Keefe has recruited Chase Morgan and Will Phillips to join him at Bungaree, and Deer Park is welcoming back Shannon Broadbent and Ryan Crawford. If you hear any other local footy moves, please let me know.
Offie has wicket day out By Lance Jenkinson Steve McKay has been a serviceable bowler for Footscray United over the past three summers – nothing more, nothing less. The off-spinner comes into the attack when the seamers are tiring and churns out valuable overs for captain Shahan Fernando. McKay has a knack of getting a sneaky wicket here and there, but nothing to suggest he was going to take Saturday’s play by the scruff of the neck with a stunning 5-38 off 21.1 overs. Newport-Digman was shellshocked after McKay left a trail of destruction to reduce it to 191 on day one of the Turf cricket west A1 clash at Bryan Martyn Oval. “It was a pretty slow, dead wicket,” United batsman Stuart Ainge told Star Weekly. “The quicks really struggled to get anything out of it so we took a lot of pace off the ball after that and bowled a bit more disciplined and tried to choke them.” Not only was McKay superb with his
plentiful breakthroughs, he put immense pressure on the batsmen with tight bowling to keep the runs in check. It was an out-of-the-box performance from McKay, who’s best known for his work with the bat. He has made 249 runs at 31 this summer, but had taken only five wickets before Saturday, doubling his output in one fell swoop. Bowling has not always been on McKay’s CV. He was a wicketkeeper for United before giving that up because of the soreness he experienced when arriving at his 9-5 job on Monday mornings. “He came through as one of our most promising batsmen and a wicketkeeper,” Ainge recalled. “He got jack of keeping because he said he had a sore back and sore knees and he’s a labourer by trade, so it was hard for him to go to work on a Monday or Tuesday with his back really sore. “One year when we had a pretty poor attack, he would run in and try and bowl quick, so we
gave him the new ball but that didn’t last long. Now he bowls off spin. “He’s done everything – he’s been a spinner, a quick, a keeper and a batsman – and he’d only be 28 or 29. “He doesn’t spin it a lot, he’s more a defensive bowler usually, but on this sort of deck, which was slow and low, he got a couple of lbws and bowled.” Pacemen Yadi Ushan (3-55) and Geeth Silva (2-46) worked hard to get their wickets on a deck that didn’t favour pacemen. United openers Ainge (6) and Raphael Kardachi (0) survived the final nine overs of the day to be 0-8 at stumps. Ainge expects the chase for 192 to be a tricky one – but one United must complete to be serious about contending this summer. “We’ve got to bat well, of course, and if we do we’ll get there,” he said. “We’ll be disappointed if we don’t. “We’ve got to win this one. If we lose we could drop out of the four.”

Rams star facing ban By Lance Jenkinson Newport Rams look likely to lose star US import Eric Kline for the rest of the season in Baseball Victoria’s summer league division 1. Kline, who was so impressive with the Rams that he earned a call-up to the Melbourne Aces in the Australian Baseball League, was so incensed at an umpiring decision that went against him in Saturday’s 10-5 loss to Essendon that he verbally retaliated and got thrown out of the game. Rams assistant coach Gavin Young told Star Weekly it was just about certain Kline would face an extended stint on the sidelines. “He got struck out on a really bad call. He said something and the umpire threw him out,” Young said. “Verbal abuse has been getting [bigger penalties] than striking recently. It’s been getting four weeks. “I doubt he’ll get another game this season based on recent history.” The Rams have been on the wrong end of some hefty losses in the new year. They were smashed 19-0 by Melbourne before back-to-back losses to Geelong, including one of 11-1. But those results were not a true reflection of a Rams side that was decimated by rep call-ups. The Rams were back at close to full strength for the clash with Essendon at KC White Reserve and it took the team with the best record in the league beyond the fifth inning to break away. “We made a few mistakes and you can’t give a side of that quality those breaks,” Young said. The Rams – third-last in their conference with a 9-11 record but well clear of relegation danger – were set to face Essendon (16-5) again last night before a home date with Sandringham (7-13) on Sunday.

Premiership favourite Altona was made to earn every point by plucky finals contender Clayton in a Bowls Victoria premier division thriller on Saturday. The A’s claimed two of the four rinks in a nail-biting 87-83 victory that puts them 38 points clear on top of the table. Brad Peck (25-21) and Mathew Rennex (19-18) were the A’s winning skips, while Shane Fordham had a 22-22 draw. The A’s hit the road to face another flag contender, Melbourne, under lights on Friday night.
Cricket
Footscray Edgewater is staring down the barrel against lowly Greenvale Kangaroos in Victorian Premier Cricket at Greenvale Reserve. The Bulldogs were bowled out for a disappointing 188 on day one and the Roos were 2-75 at stumps. Unless the Dogs’ bowlers can pull out something special on Saturday, their side will be on the wrong side of the ledger for the fourth time in five games and their odds of reaching the finals will blow out significantly. Travis Dean was the Bulldogs’ leading scorer with 48.
Soccer
Altona East Phoenix and Altona Magic will meet on the opening weekend of the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1. Fixtures were released last week, with FFV opting to launch the season with a bang by scheduling local derbies across the board in the top divisions of the state leagues. The season begins on March 21 and runs through to September 6. It was a tough day at the office for Newport Rams import Eric Kline. (Shawn Smits)

Open puts young Aussie duo back in the limelight Williamstown’s Andrew Whittington and South Australia’s Alex Bolt are shaping up as a formidable young duo in the Australian Open men’s doubles. Quarter-finalists last season after a incredible run, Whittington and Bolt wanted to prove they were no one-slam wonders, backing up last year’s effort with a creditable third-round finish at this year’s Open. The pair was eliminated from the tournament in heart-breaking fashion at Hisense Arena on Sunday, losing in two nail-biting tiebreak sets, 7-6 (9-7) 7-6 (7-3), to veterans Pablo Cuevas, of Uruguay, and David Marrero, of Spain. In the opening round, the shoe was on the other foot with Whittington and Bolt surviving two tiebreak sets to oust 15th
seeds Marin Draganja (Croatia) and Henri Kontinen (Finland), 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-4) in an upset on outside court seven. They progressed through to the third round with a three-set, 2-6, 7-5, 7-5, win over Jeremy Chardy (France) and Lukasz Kubot (Poland) on show court three. The second week of the Australian Open will see all the champions crowned at Melbourne Park. Lance Jenkinson

Daniel Kelly was euphoric after forcing Luke Zachrich into submission with a kimura in his UFC debut in Sydney in November. (Mark Kolbe/Getty Images)
Kelly’s kimura moment By Lance Jenkinson Daniel Kelly has climbed to the summit of his previous two sports, so why start doubting him now? Kelly represented Australia in judo at four Olympic Games over a 12-year span and made it to the Commonwealth Games in wrestling. The 37-year-old has proven he will leave no stone unturned to be physically ready to take on the world’s best, and he has the mental toughness to make it to the top. When Kelly decided to jump into the octagon and give mixed martial arts a try, his move was met with derision from some quarters. Kelly, who runs Resilience Training Centre at Footscray, teaching kids the finer points of martial arts, wanted a new edge to his competitive sporting exploits. He had long admired the athletes in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) of the United States and the Pride Fighting Championship (PFC) of Japan, so he thought, why not give it go? “The way I break down MMA in a really basic way is striking, take downs and ground game,” Kelly told Star Weekly.
“The judo has given me an okay base in ground game, an okay base in the take downs, but I started striking from scratch and obviously had to change my tactics and quite a few of the skills in the ground game and takedowns, because there’s no judo jacket in MMA. “The biggest thing that I had to do was start doing striking, the boxing and the kickboxing.” So Kelly went to work. Every day in the gym, he boxed and kickboxed, then repeated it the next day and the next. Once he felt comfortable that he had the skills to compete locally in MMA, he stepped into the octagon. Seven wins in seven bouts earned Kelly a spot on the card for UFC Fight Night 55 in Sydney. The Westmeadows resident still had his knockers, particularly after a first round submission to Sheldon Westcott in the Ultimate Fighter reality television show. Kelly, who is under no illusions of the dangers of competing in such a brutal sport as MMA, was hellbent on proving his doubters wrong. He stepped up in front of a massive crowd at Allphones Arena in Sydney for his UFC
debut, beating American Luke Zachrich by submission with a kimura. It was the moment Kelly arrived in the sport, and one he will always cherish. “It was very satisfying getting your first win in the UFC and proving quite a few people wrong who said you don’t belong there, you shouldn’t be doing it, you’re too old and this and that,” Kelly said. “I was on the reality TV show and that didn’t go very well for me so that was a bit of redemption for me in Sydney to prove to myself and everyone that I can compete at that level.” Kelly is no one-shot wonder, and now he wants to carve out a career in the UFC. All going well, he plans to compete at the top level for at least four years. “I want to get as far as I can in this sport – I wouldn’t be doing it otherwise.” Kelly is married to Maria Pekli, a Commonwealth Games gold medallist and Olympic bronze medallist in judo. Pekli is supportive of her husband’s career move to MMA. Meanwhile, Kelly takes the next step in his new career when he competes on the UFC Fight Night main card in Colorado on February 14.
Williamstown’s batting depth came to the fore as it powered to an imposing 8-295 off 80 overs against Preston in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association north-west group at Preston City Oval on Saturday. The Seagulls had meaningful contributions across the board – when one player fell, another was there to continue the momentum. Opener Cameron Smith ignited the innings by top-scoring with 69 and forming solid stands with opening partner Luke Rainone (15) and captain Craig Sheedy (28). From the middle order came contributions from Matthew Dervan (34) and Cameron D’Altera (50). Just when Preston was about to deliver the knock-out blow on the Seagulls’ innings, up stepped lower- order batsman Daniel Popa (38no) and Mitchell Knight (22no), who shared an unbroken 51-run partnership late in the day. For the Seagulls, sitting in eighth spot, nine points outside the top six, it’s must-win time if they are to maintain their pursuit of a finals berth. Altona is well placed against Kew on the road at Victoria Park after posting 251 in 79.4 overs. The A’s relied on a captain’s knock from Shane Jones (125) to produce nearly half their runs. He was ably supported by middleorder batsmen Ben Murfet (20), Tim Collins (30) and Josh Young (29). The fifth-placed A’s will have one foot in the finals line-up if they are successful in defending their total. Yarraville holds all the aces in its showdown with ladder leader Melton at McPherson Park. The Eagles bowled Melton out for 100, with English import Harry Finch taking 6-34 off 13 overs and captain Matthew Love snaring 3-9 off nine. The Eagles were 4-75 at stumps, needing 26 for victory, with Love (10no) and Josh Hahnel (0no) at the crease. Having beaten second-placed Roxburgh Park-Broadmeadows in the previous round, the Eagles can complete an impressive quinella and just about confirm their finals berth by downing Melton.
