A mother and daughter killed in a fire in Footscray this week had an “enormous” love for each other, according to distraught family.

Tanya and Zoe Elizabeth Burmeister, along with an unidentified male known as ‘Bluey’, were squatting in the former Kinnears rope factory in Footscray last Wednesday night when Darren Patrick Clover, 52, allegedly lit the fire that took their life.

Clover was arrested on Thursday and charged with three counts of murder, arson causing death, and arson.

Sharren Jeffs said she was devastated by the death of her daughter, Tanya, and beloved granddaughter, Zoe, in such tragic circumstances.

“The love they had for each other was just enormous,” she said.

Ms Jeffs said it had been about a week since she had last heard from Tanya, 32, and Zoe, 15.

“I thought Zoe was under the DHS, but she wanted to be with her mum,” she said. “You can’t just tie her up; they wanted to be together.”

Ms Jeffs said Clover was known to Tanya and Zoe. A friend of Tanya’s said he was shocked by the tragedy. “Tanya didn’t deserve the way she went, and the others …”

The owner of a nearby milk bar said Tanya and the unidentified man would come in each day to use the pay phone and withdraw money from the ATM. “We never had any trouble with them; they were always nice, here every day,” she said.

The blaze came just one day after Maribyrnong council approved plans for the $63 million first stage of the Kinnears site redevelopment.

Mayor Catherine Cumming said the council received complaints from a resident about six months ago about squatters occupying the site.

She said a local laws officer visited the site on a few occasions before locating one of the squatters and providing him with brochures and contact details for homeless service organisations.

“As well as that, the council put orders on the developer to secure the site.”

Site owner R & F Estate Pty Ltd said in a statement it had 24-hour security on the site and was saddened and distressed about the loss of life in the fire.

Footscray police’s Inspector Adrian Healy said police would meet with Maribyrnong council this week to discuss the extent of squatting in the area.

“We are also keen to learn whether there is any relocation of people to the area who are being forced out of the CBD.” Clover is due to appear via video link for a committal mention on Thursday.

Logan Reserve upgrades Residents and visitors can now appreciate Altona in a new light, thanks to new lighting projections installed by Council. The historic Moreton Bay figs at Logan Reserve will be illuminated by red, yellow and purple projection lighting every night from sunset until 1am. Kororoit Creek Shared Trail The construction of the Kororoit Creek Shared Trail is now even closer, thanks to Council’s recent appointment of a contract to carry out more than $2 million of works. With works commencing in March 2017, the contract will deliver Stage 2 and 3 of the trail construction from Hosken Reserve to Barnes Road Altona North, complete with way finding signage, public artwork, connections to the existing trail network, a public toilet, picnic tables, drinking fountains and bike storage. Bills Horse Trough Council is currently repairing and conserving the historic Bills Horse Trough in Nelson Place, opposite the Holy Trinity Church, Williamstown.

The trough was delicately removed in February and taken to the Grimwade Conservation Centre at Melbourne University for eight to 10 weeks for its facelift. We look forward to it returning to Williamstown. The trough was one of two in Williamstown provided to the community as part of a legacy left

by Annis and George Bills in the late 1920s. Both were passionate advocates for animal welfare. They left provisions in their will to place drinking troughs across Australia to ensure that “no horse would ever go short of a drink”.

Dogs at AB Shaw Reserve Council is proposing a trial to remove dog off-lead zones at the five sportsgrounds at AB Shaw Reserve in Altona Meadows, as well as to the playground fronting Hall Avenue. This comes after concerns from local cricket, football and soccer clubs and some reports of dogs rushing at children.

Signage will be installed to notify the community of the changes and letterbox drops will be carried out. As part of the trial, an updated map will be included on the Council’s website to clearly show where the on-lead and off-lead zones are. Removing the sportsgrounds and playground from the dog off-lead zones will ensure playing surfaces are protected and players don’t have to worry about dog droppings. Laverton Community Hub Work has started on the outdoor learning space at the Laverton Community Hub. Housing tables, power and Wi-Fi, the space is located in the middle of the grassed area at the rear of the facility. A Community Strengthening Grant through the Department of Social Services provided partial funding.

Footpath works Footpath construction works in Ayr

Street, Altona Meadows between Fitzpatrick Drive and the Skeleton Creek Trail have begun. These works will link the existing footpath in Fitzpatrick Drive and the Skeleton Creek Trail to create a continuous path for pedestrians. The works are expected to take two weeks.

Talks under way on Bradmill plan

By Benjamin Millar The owners of the former Bradmill factory site want more time to begin the redevelopment of the Yarraville property.

Beijing-based development conglomerate Chang Sheng has applied to Maribyrnong council for an extension to its permit, which lapsed last week.

Mitchell Asset Management managing director John Mitchell, who handled Chang Sheng’s recent $172 million deal for the site,

confirmed there is “a process under way” between the landowners and the council.

“The current masterplan dates from 2011 under a very different guise,” he said.

“Obviously, the site is far more strategic, especially now with the Transurban Western Distributor link due to begin works in 2018.”

The lapsed permit proposed a $20 million shopping centre, with a new library, medical centre, supermarkets, shops and apartments.

Coach Darren Clarke praised the team for exceeding all expectations. “There were some outstanding individual performances and some great team efforts as well,” he said. “The crowd really got behind the team.”

A last-ditch effort is being made to save the Footscray branch of Lentil as Anything and stop it closing by the end of this month.

A not-for-profit “pay what you feel” restaurant, Lentil as Anything has been struggling to stay open as meagre donations tumble to record lows.

Volunteers last Monday served 115 plates of food, collecting only $148 – less than $1.30 per serving.

Restaurant manager Renae Greer Burt said such low takings didn’t even cover the cost of food, let alone other costs.

Ms Burt said unless donations improved by month’s end they would be forced to shut their doors after almost eight years in Footscray.

“We’re asking the community to get behind us and support us, if not financially, then by sharing the news and encouraging people to help Lentils out,” she said. “We’re trying to buy some time, but if our donations don’t show a consistent improvement we will have to close.”

Ms Burt said those not able to contribute to the cost of a meal could help in other ways such as volunteering.

The restaurant serves more than 200 meals a day and Ms Burt fears its closure would be a massive blow for those doing it tough.

“I don’t think people realise what they’ve got here; it’s a case of not knowing what you’ve got until it’s gone.”

But Lentil as Anything won’t go without a fight and a fundraising day is organised for Sunday, March 26.

A report that a dog ate poison wrapped in fish at Altona dog beach last week has been investigated by Hobsons Bay council and the RSPCA. Council officers inspected the beach and found nothing unusual. They will continue to monitor the area and are warning dog owners to be vigilant, just in case.

People will be able to take a rare glimpse behind some of Williamstown’s most intriguing doors this month at the annual Open Williamstown event raising money for cancer research.

Six private houses and public buildings will open their doors, including the only Californian bungalow in James Street, circa 1930, and a contemporary “Tardis-like” home built in Maclean Street in 2014.

Open Williamstown chairwoman Barbara Phoenix said one home on the trail was the former Napier Hotel in Stevedore Street, built in the mid 1850s and restored by its present owners in 2005.

“They bought it and it was a shambles,” she said. “It’s been a labour of love and they’ve rebuilt it, almost.

“We also have a house in Electra Street – it’s actually a doctor’s surgery – that was once lived in by Robina Scott – the local kindergarten’s named after her.”

Also on the trail is Captains Retreat bed and breakfast, circa 1862, which has previously ben used as both a brothel and a nunnery.

Complimentary afternoon tea will be served to patrons at Williamstown town hall. The event has raised $10,000 in just two years, prompting the Cancer Council to set up an Open Williamstown research grant.

Two men were arrested at Altona Meadows servo last Thursday. Police were called to the service station in Queen Street about 5.30pm after reports that two men were involved in an altercation with staff. Police arrested two men, who are due to be charged with aggravated burglary and affray.

Deaths raise housing alarm

Itchy tree sends people indoors Williamstown residents say “itchy bomb” trees are making their lives unbearable and could trigger asthma.

Tracey Wallace has collected 62 signatures on a petition calling on Hobsons Bay council to remove the trees from Bayview and surrounding streets.

She said the tree, whose scientific name is lagunaria patersonia, causes skin, throat and potentially lung irritation from sharp fibres released from its seedpods, and had been linked to asthma attacks and allergic reactions.

“I recently moved into this street and since then we’ve had health issues, and we can’t live outside our house – it’s unbearable,” Ms Wallace said. “We can’t sit outside … you get prickles in your body. It’s painful.

“It’s in your washing, it’s in your outdoor area, you can’t have bare feet, the animals are constantly chewing on their paws.

“I’ve discussed my concerns with my neighbours … and they said it’s unbearable.

We’ve had enough.

Ms Wallace said other councils had recognised the trees are problematic and have removed them in the past.

Her petition was tabled at last week’s council meeting. Officers will now prepare a report with potential recommendations for the council’s consideration.

The deaths of three squatters in Footscray highlights the urgent need for more social housing in Melbourne’s west, according to advocates.

Last week’s alleged arson attack occurred across the road from one of the nine sites that community organisation Launch Housing has identified as potential locations for relocatable units to house some of the city’s growing homeless population.

While some residents have lodged objections to proposals for 57 units spread along Ballarat Road, citing concerns ranging from parking to fears of drug use and violence, others are speaking out in support of the project.

“We see this as an innovative use of what is otherwise vacant government land,” she said.

Ms Breen said high housing prices pushing people out of areas such as Footscray could leave them further disengaged from essential community and support services.

Ballarat Road resident James Scott said he supported Launch Housing’s project.

“Footscray has a homeless population living in dangerous conditions, yet we have this space right here that could be used to house them,” he said.

The Homeless Persons Union Victoria said the fire tragedy highlighted the insecurity and dangers faced by people experiencing homelessness.

“This is the result of a society that cares more for private property and profit than it does for community and the fundamental human right to shelter,” it said.

Jailed for blackmailing teacher

By Benjamin Millar A Footscray “ice” addict who threatened to share revealing photos from a stolen computer as part of a string of offending has been sentenced to 30 months in jail.

Riley Brown must serve at least 18 months of his term after pleaded guilty to 14 charges of theft and multiple charges of burglary, handling stolen goods, deception and blackmail.

The bulk of the offences took place within a few weeks of his release from prison last May. The County Court of Victoria heard Brown,

28, had been involved in the theft of letters, driver licences, assorted bank cards and other items from various letterboxes during a period of 10 weeks.

Judge Paul Grant said the behaviour involved serious breaches of the law.

“I have no doubt that the theft of these items would have, at the very least, caused their owners distress, inconvenience and frustration,” he said On June 10, Brown stole keys to an apartment in South Yarra and used them to steal a computer from a female teacher.

He used the computer to access her social media and email accounts, also discovering photographs of the victim and other personal information that he used to blackmail her.

He sent an email to the victim demanding $5000 within two hours or he would start posting pictures of her in her underwear and releasing all her information.

Judge Grant said this marked an escalation in Brown’s offending.

“The receipt of your emails was profoundly unsettling for the victim, who became extremely anxious and very upset,” he said.

The victim was unable to return to her apartment for five days because of severe anxiety and six months later was still suffering anxiety when home alone at night.

She said she felt a “real invasion” of her privacy and feared the photographs of her in her underwear might be sent to teachers and students where she worked, which would be “extremely detrimental to her career”.

In sentencing Brown, Judge Grant said his lengthy criminal history and drug dependency left him “guarded” about prospects for rehabilitation.

Baton needs bearers Inner-west residents will have the chance to play a part in the 2018 Commonwealth Games when the Queen’s Baton Relay passes through town early next year.

Travelling across Australia for 100 days from Christmas Day to the opening ceremony of the Gold Coast Games, the baton will pause in Footscray and Williamstown on February 10 as two of only seven stops in Melbourne.

The search is now under way for 3800 ‘local legends’ to carry the baton across Australia.

Maribyrnong mayor Catherine Cumming said the municipality was proud to be part of the baton route.

“The Commonwealth Games celebrates sport, community, diversity and peace,” she said.

“The City of Maribyrnong is a shining example of these values as we have people

representing more than 135 countries living in harmony in our great city and we look forward to seeing many nominations for baton bearers.”

Hobsons Bay mayor Sandra Wilson said baton bearers were people of all abilities who inspired others to be great.

“It will be a great honour for those selected by the community to represent Hobsons Bay in the Queen’s Baton Relay,” she said.

“We’re looking forward to being part of this journey and know our community will be excited to come along for the ride.”

The baton relay starts at Buckingham Palace on March 13 (Commonwealth Day) and finishes at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games opening ceremony on April 4, 2018.

Car-jacker still on the run

An Altona North man has been charged and another man remains on the run after a BMW stolen in a carjacking crashed into Club Laverton hotel on Thursday morning.

Darebin detectives allege that two men, armed with a chainsaw and gun, stole the black BMW X5 sedan from outside a Reservoir fish and chip shop about 6.30pm on Tuesday last week.

The alleged carjackers blocked in the BMW with a small car before threatening the three men inside, slashing one with the switched-off

chainsaw. He required 25 stitches.

The three victims sought refuge inside a shop, pursued by the gunman, before handing over the car keys, cash and a mobile phone.

The BMW was seen about an hour later at a convenience store on the Western Ring Road at Ardeer.

Detectives believe the same men may have also been involved in an incident the following day, when a man in a BMW pointed a gun at the driver of another car travelling inbound on the West Gate Freeway, just west of Millers Road at Brooklyn, about 6.50am.

A 20-year-old Altona North man was caught

by police after running from the scene when the stolen BMW slammed through the wall of Club Laverton at 3am on Thursday.

Two men were seen on CCTV footage running from the scene, but police caught one of them as he was crossing the freeway.

The Altona North man has been charged with extortion, armed robbery, ice trafficking, conduct endangering life and other offences.

Police are still hunting the other man, who may have been injured. Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Children teach inclusion Hobsons Bay children experienced a taste of Japanese culture last week when students from Nagoya Women’s University visited local primary schools and kindergartens.

Sixty-two women studying to become teachers or early childhood educators in Japan were hosted by local families for a fortnight.

Altona and Newport Gardens primary schools were among host schools to hold Japanese culture days, with activities such as costume parades, calligraphy, origami, a sushi lunch and kendo demonstrations.

Altona Primary School Japanese teacher, Kellie Larter, said her school hosted 10 exchange students, who lived with 10 different families.

“It’s just a fabulous opportunity for our students to be exposed to a totally different culture and for the Japanese students to experience what it’s like to be in an Australian

family for a couple of weeks,” Ms Larter said.

Yoshie Weaver, co-ordinator with school tour organiser Japan Link, said the university had been sending students to stay in and experience Hobsons Bay for the past 13 years.

Unit developer tries again

By Goya Dmytryshchak Coen Ashton, who at 13 became the youngest person to jet-ski the 2000-kilometre length of the Murray River before getting a double lung transplant, has moved to Newport as he awaits a kidney transplant.

Now 19, Coen, who has cystic fibrosis and insulin-dependent diabetes, continues on his mission to raise organ donation awareness.

His family has moved to Melbourne from Queensland to be close to The Alfred hospital.

Coen’s work has so far resulted in more than 1000 people signing up us organ donors.

When he was 12, his doctors told him he was too well to get on the transplant list.

“There’s a very fine gap for a transplant – you can’t be too sick because you won’t make it and you can’t be too well because obviously you don’t need a transplant,” Coen said. “They said that I was a little bit too well to get a transplant.

“To a 12-year-old kid that was, ‘Well I’ve got lungs to burn’. So I went and jet-skied the length of the Murray River.”

It took him seven weeks to complete the journey, between receiving about three to four hours of treatment each morning and night.

“I only had about 30 per cent of my lungs,” he said.

“I should have been a kid just laying there on oxygen, asleep.”

He achieved his objective of getting 1000 people to sign up to the Australian organ donor register.

Six months after receiving a double lung transplant at 15, Coen jet-skied the Murray a second time to show the difference a transplant could make. This time, it took him seven days.

Coen said anyone could be a hero by being an organ donor.

A new application has been lodged for a four-storey apartment block on the site of a service station opposite Williamstown Town Hall.

A previous application for 97 Ferguson Street was refused by Hobsons Bay council then by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT).

A report prepared for developer Noordenne Constructions states plans have been amended in response to VCAT’s ruling.

Current plans show 14 dwellings and three retail premises, with a reduction in carparking requirements and a waiver of loading bay requirements.

Save Williamstown spokeswoman Suzanne Orange said the proposal was an overdevelopment for the site.

“The … planned construction is an overdevelopment of huge proportions when considering the Ferguson Street heritage precinct,” Ms Orange said.

“Twenty-four carparks are supplied, 38 are required, and there is no provision for loading and unloading of commercial vehicles.”

“The Hobsons Bay planning scheme requires new infill buildings, alterations and additions to existing buildings to be compatible in scale, siting, design, form and materials with the character of the heritage place or precinct. It is about five metres taller than it should be and I don’t know of any sandstone-clad buildings in the area.”

No let-up in bridge hits

needed to be taken to ensure over-height trucks didn’t try to squeeze under the bridge. “There are plenty of signs, but clearly it’s not working.”

Another over-height truck crashed into the inbound bridge barrier last Monday, just days after the barriers were realigned to improve safety at a cost of $600,000.

The works were designed to stop containers injuring or killing pedestrians or cyclists after being knocked onto the footpath or bike lane.

But Maribyrnong Truck Action Group spokesman Martin Wurt said realigning the barriers was a Band-aid measure.

“You’ve got three lanes going down into one, trucks coming under Victoria’s most struck bridge, round the corner to a pedestrian crossing used by most of Victoria University’s students – it’s just ridiculous.”

A driver narrowly escaped serious injury after crashing his car into a container that had toppled from a truck in Footscray on Monday morning.

The container truck slammed into an overhead barrier at Footscray’s notorious Napier Street bridge about 8.45am, shedding its container and throwing roads and train lines into chaos. The car’s bonnet and front end were badly damaged and the driver sustained minor injuries.

Napier Street’s rail overpass, Melbourne’s most struck rail bridge, has been hit almost 70 times since 2005, mostly by truck drivers misjudging the four-metre clearance. About 3000 trucks travel the route each day, most coming to and from the Port of Melbourne.

Film with gut-wrenching twist

By Goya Dmytryshchak An Australian film comedy, The BBQ, was filming in Hobsons Bay last week with locals starring as extras at locations including Seaworks in Williamstown.

As Star Weekly approached one house in Seaholme where a scene was being shot with Shane Jacobson and Julia Zemiro, a member of the crew motioned for us to be silent.

The plot centres around Jacobson’s character, Darren ‘Dazza’ Cook, a barbecue enthusiast who accidentally gives his neighours food poisoning. Zemiro plays his wife.

“Part of his penance, or remorse, is that he’s encouraged to learn some new skills, refine his skills,” says producer Deb Fryers.

Enter Magda Szubanski, playing a Scottish butcher who encourages Dazza to enter a barbecue competition.

In comes Manu Fiedel, playing a contestant who’s an arrogant French chef and evil nemesis of the butcher from times gone past.

Jacobson, best known as the ‘Dunny Man’ for his role in Kenny Kenny, told Star Weekly it was fantastic to be back in his old ’hood.

“Altona beach was where I used to come as a kid and I lived in Newport for a long while, so it’s just kinda good to be back in the hood as they say,” he said.

Fryers said the Seaholme family whose home was used as a set had been politely moved out, and a flagpole was erected on the front lawn as filming took place.

She praised locals who ‘starred’ as family guests in a backyard barbecue scene.

“We had the most amazing bunch of extras,” Fryers said. “They were on for almost 10 hours and they were having an absolute ball. They were there chatting, eating, being part of the background; it was a big scene across two days.”

Filming is set to continue in Hobsons Bay this week at locations including Altona pier.

The movie is scheduled to be released later this year.

MY PLACE Lorraine Bedella has a senior citizens centre named after her in Altona North and has received just about every honour for community service one could imagine. The walls of her Brooklyn home are running out of space for framed family photos alongside her numerous awards. She speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak.

What’s your connection to Hobsons Bay? When I got married, I bought a block of land and I’m still here. I’ve been here since 1955; it’s 62 years in October.

What do you love about Brooklyn?

I’ve just been here so long I don’t want to move.

I came here with no children and reared four daughters and now they’re all married with their families.

What would you change about Brooklyn?

I’d change the way the estate agents treat you.

They sent me a letter, said they were told I have an investment property in Brooklyn. And it’s my home. So, I rang them up and I said, who told you? And they said, we got told. And I said, well, it’s a lie. This is my home and I’m not moving and I’m not dead.

Community services and my knitting. I knit for charity. Just two weeks ago, I gave away 30 jumpers. My mother taught me to knit when I was 10. I’ve knitted for Chernobyl, then one year I knitted 80 for the Royal Children’s Hospital. My sister’s got a friend who’s got an orphanage in Delhi and she was looking for clothes for them; I gave them 50. They did a story a couple of years ago and they worked it out that I’ve knitted 150,000 jumpers.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a very local, very low-key neighbourhood.

There was a couple of Indian places here that we never visited.

Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re gone â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and now thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just the very brand new Biryani Nation.

With a name like that, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d want to be pretty darn good at cooking â&#x20AC;Ś biryanis.

Certainly, the menu makes a big deal out of this sub-continental rice dish â&#x20AC;&#x201C; there are about 30 of them, including vegetarian options, on offer.

Apart from the regulation and expected dum biryanis â&#x20AC;&#x201C; in which the meat is cooked with the rice â&#x20AC;&#x201C; I suspect many of the Biryani Nation dishes could more accurately be labelled as pulaos.

Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s of no matter to me â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not about to get into hair-splitting if the food is good, and there is a range of flavours and seasoning among the various biryani selections.

There is such a range â&#x20AC;&#x201C; I know, because Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve tried two of them and they were very good.

Here, as for saag/spinach dishes, it is used as a puree marinade cooking medium for the mutton, one piece of which crowns my rice pile and many others of which are buried within.

Some of the mutton pieces are bone-free and wonderful. As many more are on the bone and rather tough â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but I like it like that, getting fully into the hands-on swing that very much goes with this sort of territory.

The big thing is the flavour â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the gongura produces a zesty, citrus-like tang the likes of which Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve never before experienced in Indian food.

And I love it!

So much so, that I use the raita only sparingly, and the gravy not at all, in order to enjoy the leafy puree all the more.

SPORT Dam fine race goes into history books Footscray Cycling Club riders took to the VU Circuit in Hoppers Crossing on Sunday to contest the biggest club race of the summer.

In their sights was the time-honoured Eric Turner Memorial Criterium Championships, and for the first time in the club’s 120-year history there would be both male and female club champions crowned.

In A-grade, it was 33-year-old Melton resident and current club champion Dom Dudkiewicz who got his hands on the coveted No. 1 jersey for another year, taking out his third consecutive title after an early race break-away that stuck.

“There were a few surges in the opening laps, nothing too dramatic, but then I put in one lap at full gas in the gutter,” Dudkiewicz said.

“I looked around expecting to see it strung out behind me, but I didn’t realise I had a gap.

I saw Miles DaCosta in no-man’s land between

myself and the bunch, so I eased up and waited for him because I knew it would be better for both of us.

“Once we were together, we put our heads down and swapped turns. It was Miles and I, then a chase group of about six riders, and then a few groups behind them.

“We were up about half a lap when I knew we were not going to get caught, so I went again and lapped the field before the last lap.

“I wanted to defend my title and attacking is always the best way to do it.”

Dudkiewicz powered to the championship with half a lap breathing space from DaCosta and Andrew Bonello, who took the bunch sprint to claim third.

Sarah Dam, a 41-year-old from West Footscray, etched her name into the history books as the first ever FCC women’s club champion, in an exciting race.

“We got down to four, and then three of us over the course of the race,” Dam said. “We just kept the pace high and worked hard together.

“I was on the front for the last lap and I thought I’d give it a go early and went before the last corner.

“I kept thinking about whose name would be in the history books as the first female club champ, and that just gave me that little bit extra I needed to hang on.”

A delighted Dam took the narrow win from Tamara Riddell and Gina McVicar.

In the other races, Little River resident Darren Payne showed his sprinting qualities late on, storming to the finish line in first, ahead of Michael Dam and Andrew Naughtin in B grade, while Alastair Delooze (C grade) and Steve Harris (D grade) were other winners.

IN THE DOGHOUSE Cricket finals and Werribee goes into the business end in some good form late in the season, finishing with a nail-biting win over arch rival Hoppers Crossing. Scores were level with two balls remaining, and wicketkeeper batsman Darcy Phillips got the Tigers home, hitting the winning runs in his 37 not out. The Tigers head to Balwyn next week for the semi-final having lost there in their only encounter this season. Williamstown finished on top of the ladder and naturally is the team to beat. Yarraville Club Cricket club enters yet another finals series in the VTCA, but face Spotswood, their 2016-17 nemesis. The Clubbers have lost both times to the Woodsmen this season and will be hoping their big game experience kicks in with their big name players. Coach Michael O’Keefe is stepping down when the campaign ends, and will be hoping for one more game after this one.

local cricket legend has ended his reign … Mark Logan stepped down from Laverton’s first X1 last weekend. Loges is a well known footy and cricket identity, having made his senior debut at the age of 16 back in the 1986-87 season. After 280 first X1 games, he wants to play some games with his son, Jai, as he comes up through the ranks. Mark leaves a remarkable record. He was eight times Laverton club champion, a Ron Dawes’ medallist for competition champion, and he’s played in three premierships plus won numerous batting and bowling awards. Well done Loges.

Dogs bury their demons

By Lance Jenkinson Memories of the last-round heartbreak from the past two Premier Cricket seasons came flooding back for Footscray Edgewater coach Steve Chapman.

There was a more palatable ending this time for Chapman and the Bulldogs, avoiding the potential of six months of stewing over what might have been by clinching a spot in the finals.

The Dogs left nothing to chance, defeating Geelong by an innings and 13 runs in a dominant display at Merv Hughes Oval on Saturday.

It was still an uneasy day for Chapman, who was on the edge of his seat until the 20th and final Cats wicket was taken.

“I said to the lads at the start of the day, we can’t take it for granted that eight wickets are going to fall in our lap and we’re going to play finals,” Chapman said.

“As good as you were last week, while we got the six points, it doesn’t assure us of anything, so we’ve got to keep going and we’ve got to have

another good full day in the field. I wasn’t sure it was going to happen at one stage. We had a few nervous moments but managed to get over the line.”

Footscray Edgewater was a dominant force on day one. The Bulldogs rolled Geelong for just 57 and powered to 4-256 before declaring.

While the Bulldogs were in eighth spot entering the round, a first innings victory might not have been enough if there had been an outright result at one of the other venues.

So the Bulldogs went into the day with an outright on their mind to snuff out the challengers from outside the eight.

They had a headstart on day two, having taken early Geelong wickets late on day one. But the remaining eight wickets were problematic for Footscray Edgewater.

“We’d stagnated when we had them four down,” Chapman said. “Up to drinks in the middle session, we still hadn’t taken a fifth wicket so it was nervy there for a while.”

Mitch Reid (60) and Brenton McDonald (66) combined for a 112-run partnership to give Geelong some hope of avoiding the outright.

They took the Cats’ score from 4-51 to 5-163.

Once Footscray Edgewater broke up the pairing, it was all downhill for the Cats.

Bulldogs leg-spinner Jeremy Hart, a former Cat, dismissed both of the set batsmen and broke the game open to finish with 4-36 off 18 overs.

“We weren’t in a hole, but we were really toiling,” Chapman said. “[Hart] bowled Mitch Reid, knocked McDonald over as well, even if it was a little bit contentious, and the rest of the lads couldn’t handle him. He tends to get his wickets in a hurry, he was exceptional.”

Another former Geelong player, left-arm orthodox spinner Hayden Butterworth, was outstanding with 2-18 off 5.1, while opening bowlers Hamish Winter-Irving (2-30) and Lucas Dredge (2-71) helped sink the ship.

Winter-Irving finished with seven wickets for the match.

It will be cut-throat for Footscray Edgewater when it faces Camberwell Magpies in week one of the Premier Cricket finals this weekend. The pressure is all on the Magpies, who finished on top of the ladder after the regular season.

The Bulldogs added Roarke Smith to the long-term injury list last week but I am sure this young man will be seen again in the red, white and blue once he has recovered. The player everyone has forgotten is Josh Prudden, another coming off a knee reconstruction.

Hopefully he can come back and enjoy an injury free run to show his talents.

season is just about upon us again, and local clubs are entering the practice match phase of the pre-season in the coming weeks. Clearances are still a very busy area with players making last minute moves from league to league. I still am amazed at players who sign contracts, then think it is okay to jump ship when a more lucrative offer comes along. A contract is a contract, and if you sign up, you should expect to honour it. There is not one rule for clubs and another for players.

Countdown for TAC girls competition The advent of the new TAC Cup girls competition will provide future AFL Women’s players with an elite pathway to the big league.

The next generation will be more skilful, more athletic and more attuned to the intricacies of playing football at the elite level once they have completed their apprenticeships in the competition that was launched last week.

Shane Sexton has long been the regional manager of the Western Jets – employed to recruit, develop and nurture the next wave of star western suburbs footballers – and he is already impressed by the talented girls coming through his club’s ranks.

Sexton got to glimpse some of the young players further down the development track when the Jets played a practice game against Calder Cannons … and he has no doubts that the future of women’s football will be bright.

“I don’t think it’s the unknown any more,” Sexton said. “By and large, they’re [the Cannons program] a year in front of us.

“And the skill of some of their girls – some of our kids were really good too – but they had a couple of players who were right foot, left foot,

take a mark over your head … clearance work at the stoppages was impressive, it was just outstanding footy. The girls have got the talent, and there’s going to be enough of them coming through.

“Some of those girls I saw last weekend, in a couple of years’ time, they’ll be playing AFL women’s footy, no doubt about it.”

Western Jets was involved with youth girls football last season. They teamed up with Geelong Falcons to form a combined side to play against a selection of other TAC Cup clubs.

“Those girls played in a series of matches last year,” Sexton said. “This year it has developed again. Now every TAC Cup club has got a team.”

The inaugural TAC Cup girls competition will feature 12 clubs and the season will be played over five rounds.

The premiership team will be the side that finishes on top of the ladder, with no finals to be played in the competition’s first season.

The long-term vision for the competition is to eventually run it side-by-side with the TAC Cup.

“It’s open-ended in terms of how quick this will develop, but there could be a fully fledged TAC Cup girls competition not too far down the track,” Sexton said.

The Western Jets will play its first game on March 18 against the Greater Western Victoria Rebels.

The side will be coached by Bridget Barker, who also works in development at North Melbourne Football Club.

Barker and her assistants have been working with a training squad of about 70 Jets hopefuls, with the first team to be picked for round one next week.

“Bridget’s really enthusiastic and is doing a great job,” Sexton said.

“She’s come with a fairly significant football background.”

City faces tough rivals

By Lance Jenkinson Altona City sent local rivals Williamstown packing from the FFA Cup after a 2-1 win in the second round at Kim Reserve on Saturday night.

An undermanned City, missing up to seven first team regulars, were in control for most of the local derby, but Williamstown, which plays in a league below, kept fighting and managed to snare a late goal for the tight finish.

“We were definitely the dominant side,” City president Joe Tanti said. “We had a lot of opportunities in the first half and just couldn’t put them away.

“Williamstown went into half-time and assessed the situation, I suppose, so they came out and put a little bit of pressure on us, but we held out well.”

Not surprisingly, Altona City’s first goal was created by the busy Marcus Sherif.

Sherif was a constant thorn in the side of the Williamstown defenders, and made an incisive run to be brought down in the penalty box.

Matthew Gray stepped up from the ensuing penalty to give City a one-nil lead after 11 minutes.

Altona City doubled its lead just eight minutes later through Sefgi Murat.

Murat’s goal created a bit of calm for City, which had bossed the game without finding that back-breaking goal.

It meant City had to endure a nervous finish after Gorgi Niceski pulled a goal back for Williamstown in the 85th minute.

But City was able to hold on in a frantic final five minutes to book their spot in the next round.

“It was a good, tough win,” Tanti said.

“Unless you’re in the same division, you don’t get to play them often, so it’s a game that builds a local rivalry, even though you’re not in the same division.

“It was a great night, there was a good crowd that came out, so it’s an exciting competition to be part of.”

James Neighbour was Altona City’s most influential player in the heart of the defence.

Neighbour had to be a leader on the park with a number of first choice defenders missing.

“With the young boys around him, he stood up and took control down there and kept sending the ball back every time,” Tanti said.

Dave Taylor made a great first impression on the Altona City fans.

The English import formed an imposing partnership in the centre of the park with Matthew Gray.

“He came from London at the start of this year and has slotted in nicely,” Tanti said.

“He’s in there with Matty Gray in the midfield and they’re working together really well.”

In Monday’s FFA Cup third round draw, Altona City came out of the pot as the home side for a second game running with Skye United to pay a visit to Kim Reserve.

Elsewhere, Yarraville Glory will be at home to Keilor Park, Altona East Phoenix will host Rosebud Heart and Altona Magic will make the trip to North City Wolves.

Altona has swept western rival Yarraville Footscray in their two-game Bowls Victoria premier division series.

After beating the Bulldogs by a single shot first time around, Altona did it much easier on Saturday, powering to an 87-73 win away at Francis Street.

It was the perfect finals tune-up for Altona, which will face Bundoora RSL in an elimination final back at YarravilleFootscray Bowls Club this Saturday.

There is plenty of local interest in division 4 after both Newport and Laverton qualified for the finals.

Laverton was the big mover in the final round, snatching fourth spot after gaining the maximum 18 points in a 101-67 win over Strathmore.

Who did Laverton dislodge from the top four? The very team it beat.

Newport lost to St Albans by one-shot in a thriller, but picked up four priceless points to secure a home final.

The Porters will entertain Werribee in the second semi-final on Saturday, while Laverton will travel to take on minor premier Sunbury.

In division 1, Altona Sports will go down after a long relegation fight with Werribee.

Only one point separated the two sides entering the final round, but Altona Sports’ narrow three-shot loss sealed its fate as Werribee upset Essendon.

Rosamond was relegated on the final day in division 2 after a heavy 42-shot loss to Flemington & Kensington.

Williamstown qualified for the division 3 finals. The Towners will square off with Deer Park in a semi-final.

Footscray Park will be relegated.

Spotswood stumble sets up a tough semi-final A hiccup for Spotswood in the last round of the Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division season has proven costly.

The Woodsmen tumbled from first to third after going down in an upset to Airport WestSt Christophers by 35 runs on their home deck at Donald McLean Reserve on Saturday.

Chasing 184 to seal the minor premiership, Spotswood got the jitters to be all out for just 148.

That left the side down in third place and facing a daunting trip to Yarraville Club in the semi-finals, while Greenvale Kangaroos grabbed top spot.

Yarraville Club moved gleefully back into the top two with a 242-run first-innings win over Strathmore at Syd McGain Oval.

It was not all plain sailing for the Clubbers, who bowled the Mores out for just 42 in the first innings after scoring 7-284 themselves.

But they spent the second day chasing leather when conceding 6-305, including 191 to Dean Peter-Budge.

In north-west division, Druids and Seddon

will face off in a derby semi-final at Shorten Reserve.

Seddon will take winning form into the finals after dismantling Altona North by 180 runs.

John Taylor set the wheels in motion for Seddon with 116 not out before Hayden Dryiski’s four wickets put a halt to Altona North’s victory ambitions.

Druids clipped a hurdle in the final round, going down to Aberfeldie by 65 runs in the top-of-the-table clash.

At the opposite end of the ladder, Footscray United collected the wooden spoon, but at least it bade farewell to the division on a winning note, downing Keilor Park on first innings by 45 runs.

Laverton finished second last on the ladder, completing the season with a first-innings loss to West Coburg.

In north-west A1, Altona Roosters somehow lost outright to Werribee Centrals at Galvin Park.

Leading by 56 runs on first innings, the Roosters had the home side in all sorts of trouble

at 5-6, but the Centurions produced a stunning turnaround to make 263 in the second innings, amassing a lead of 207 runs.

The Roosters second innings didn’t go to plan – they were bowled out for 161.

Williamstown CYMS and St Andrews Footscray will be dropping down a division after finishing last and second last respectively.

In north-west B1, West Newport is preparing for a premiership tilt after qualifying for the finals in third.

The Lions will take some confidence into their semi-final against East Keilor after beating that very team in the last round on Saturday.

In west A1, Williamstown Colts succumbed to Seabrook in the battle for fourth, losing by three wickets.

That means Williamstown Imperials are the only Hobsons Bay team through to the finals in that division. The Imperials face a tough trip to Melton Centrals in the semi-finals.

By Lance Jenkinson You’d hate to be an opposition captain attempting to plot the downfall of Williamstown in this season’s Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association finals.

With no glaring weaknesses, the Seagulls have one of the most even teams, from players one through to 11.

There’s a mix of age and experience, senior players who are some of the best time-honoured leaders in the competition, and younger players with enough experience not to be overawed by the impending finals’ campaign.

There’s depth in their batting; five batsmen – Brent McMinn (505 runs), Dale McDonald (414), Mitchell Streiff (363), Craig Sheedy (329) and Matthew Dervan (272) – all scored more than 250 runs this summer. And there’s an imposing bowling attack; five bowlers – Patrick O’Malley (25 wickets), Daniel Popa (23), Bryce Preston (23), Sheedy (20) and Streiff (16) – all took more than 15 wickets.

How do you stop a side with so many weapons?

Williamstown’s veteran all-rounder Sheedy knows that if one player is down on a particular day, chances are another handful will step up, which is the reason the Seagulls clinched the minor premiership and are the team to beat going into finals.

“We haven’t gone out of our way to make it like that, it’s just sort of evolved that way, with different guys performing each week,” Sheedy said.

“We understand that you’re not going to get runs and wickets every week, that’s just how cricket works.

“But we’ve been able to find enough blokes each week to contribute enough to get us over the line.”

Sheedy puts Williamstown’s success down to some good old-fashioned hard work and stability at the top. Captain-coach McDonald has implemented a program and the players have universally bought into it.

“Dale’s running a really tight ship, and he’s very organised,” Sheedy said.

“People have been following that; they’re all jumping on and we’re all on the same page … the hard work is starting to pay off now.”

Williamstown is not taking anything for granted though. The Seagulls know they will have a target on their back as the top-ranked side when finals begin on Saturday.

“We’ve done the hard work, got ourselves in a good position, now we’ve got to push even harder now to make sure we’re playing in the last game of the year, and we get on top in that one,” Sheedy said. “That starts from the first final.

“It’s great that we’ve done what we’ve done to get where we are, but we’ve still got a long way
