A long fought battle to ban trucks on residential Yarraville and Footscray streets has been won but the transport industry and residents of adjacent suburbs have slammed the decision.

Premier Daniel Andrews announced the 24/7 truck bans in Footscray on Sunday while unveiling the final design for the rebranded $5.5 billion West Gate Tunnel.

The toll road project includes twin tunnels beneath Yarraville, from the West Gate Freeway to the Maribyrnong River, and an elevated freeway above Footscray Road to CityLink and the city.

It’s to be built from early 2018 by a consortium led by John Holland and CPB Contractors.

Once construction is complete in 2022, non-local trucks will be banned on Yarraville’s Francis Street and Somerville Road and Footscray’s Buckley and Moore Streets.

The Maribyrnong Truck Action Group, which has campaigned for a decade to reduce trucks on local roads, has celebrated the bans as an end to “the unjust and toxic situation”.

Secretary Martin Wurt said MTAG would now campaign for quality tunnel filtration.

But the announcement has stirred anger in the trucking industry and among Spotswood residents who say they will be paying for Yarraville’s protection from trucks with increased pollution from a widened West Gate Freeway and a new truck ramp adjacent to Donald McLean Reserve.

Better West spokeswoman Christine Harris said the consultation process had been “a sham” and that Transurban’s unsolicited freeway proposal was designed to attract rather than reduce truck traffic in the area.

“Why is the Andrews government facilitating a multinational profit-driven road monopoly that locks in the people of the west because they have no other transport choice due to decades of neglect in providing decent public transport?” she asked.

The Victorian Transport Association has warned truck bans will increase pressure on freight operators already slugged with heavy CityLink toll increases.

Williamstown MP Wade Noonan said the West Gate Tunnel would create 6000 jobs and be the biggest infrastructure investment in the west since the West Gate Freeway.

He welcomed the truck bans and the creation of new open space in Altona North and Footscray saying it would transform the liveability of the inner west.

Homeless plan to launch

By Benjamin Millar The roll-out of 57 new units to house the homeless in Footscray and Maidstone is all but assured with approvals in place for six of the nine sites.

Maribyrnong councillors last week unanimously backed the $5 million plan by Launch Housing to set the re-locatable homes on VicRoads land along Ballarat Road.

Dozens of residents campaigning against the developments packed last week’s meeting that would decide the fate of three of the sites, after another three were approved earlier.

Councillors voted to follow council officer recommendations for approvals at 118, 121 and 125 Ballarat Road, for a combined 14 one-bedroom units, despite 82 objections.

The objections related to lack of carparking, inconsistency with neighbourhood character, variations to ResCode, waste collection and the “types” of people expected to be residing in the dwellings.

Resident David Bird told the meeting he was concerned by the “vast number of dwellings”, the project’s scale and property devaluation.

Verena Kostadinov said the proposal failed to respect the neighbourhood character and “diminishes the style and feel of the neighbourhood”.

Katherine Gow said the proposed dwellings were of a sub-standard design and poor quality, sending a message that the homeless should be willing to accept inferior housing.

Speaking in support of the proposal, Kate Breen of HousingAIM said councils had a

planning obligation to enable diverse housing types.

Launch Housing representative Hong Young Tsao said the proposal to use the unused land was about giving “a fair go” to some of the 22,000 people in Victoria that identify as homeless.

Councillor Sarah Carter, who moved the motion to support the project at 125 Ballarat Road, said housing was a fundamental human right.

She said tenant selection would need to be carefully managed and that she would prefer the units were not provided to “complex or high-need” tenants.

Decisions regarding the final three sites will be made by the council in coming months.

The trials and tribulations of working in retail are being aired for the world to see in a new web comedy series co-starring Yarraville actor Stephanie Evison Williams.

A pilot episode of Rostered On was filmed last year and went viral online, giving the creators the confidence to create a six-part series, which airs from this week.

A trailer for the new series also struck a chord, attracting more than 12 million views.

The independent comedy centres on the day-to-day struggles of working for a faceless retail corporation known as Electroworld.

Evison Williams features as Sara, the wife of central character Shaun, played by Paul Moore of Winners & Losers fame.

“They have a great relationship; Sara is more go-with-the-flow of the two and encouraging him to pursue other things, given he is so tired of the retail world,” Evison Williams said.

The series is based on the years spent working in retail by writer-director Ryan Chamley.

Evison Williams said Chamley has given the cast a lot of freedom to ad lib, meaning much of the comedy has been improvised.

There are high hopes of the series being picked up for streaming by Netflix.

But for now, Evison Williams is delighted to see it gaining so much attention online.

“I think it’s important as a performer to diversify.

“I started my career as a music theatre performer, but the web is a great medium for independent film productions, it’s so immediate,” she said.

“The immediacy is what I have missed with film and television – it’s what I got so much satisfaction from in theatre.”

Developer wins five year battle A developer has gained approval for a five-storey apartment complex in Spotswood, after five years battling residents, Hobsons Bay council and the state’s planning tribunal.

The council last week granted Planning & Property Partners (PPP) a permit for a five-storey and a three-storey building at 637 Melbourne Road. The development will comprise 35 two-bedroom dwellings and 42 car spaces.

PPP, acting for Melbourne Cup Pty Ltd (a subsidiary of Omni Property Group), originally applied to build an eight-storey and a three-storey building with 74 dwellings on the site in 2012.

Plans then changed to one eight-storey building with 56 apartments, which was refused by the council in 2014.

Before the council’s decision was unsuccessfully challenged on appeal to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, plans were scaled back to five storeys.

The latest proposal, advertised in February, was amended according to VCAT recommendations and was last week approved by the council with a raft of conditions.

PPP director Paul Little told Star Weekly the final proposal was “respectful of the character of the area and the amenity of nearby residents”.

“The proposal that was considered by council [last week] has clearly been revised specifically to deal with the issues that council raised previously, and indeed we’re very pleased with the officer’s detailed assessment, and ratification of that assessment by the council.

“The proposal has been designed to transition from five levels on the eastern half of the site at the Melbourne Road interface and down to three levels on the western side.”

Nearby at 455 Melbourne Road, Newport, The Shakespeare Group is developing a five-storey, 34-dwelling apartment complex, being marketed as ‘The New’.

Bail revoked for grope suspect

No place to call home

By Goya Dmytryshchak and Miki Perkins More than 20 residents of Hobsons Bay Caravan Park are pleading for more time to find homes as demolitions take place around them.

The Williamstown North park in Kororoit Creek Road is closing after the prime site was sold and rezoned for a three-storey, 108-dwelling development.

But with the closure goes housing for some

of Melbourne’s most vulnerable low-income residents, who had been paying $130 a week, plus outgoings.

Housing advocates say many of the caravan park’s former residents could end up sleeping rough in Melbourne’s CBD. Some have moved to other caravan parks. Most have accepted places in rooming houses or emergency accommodation.

“Each closure of a caravan park means one less option of last resort,” says Jenny Smith, the head of the Council to Homeless Persons.

“This explains why we’re seeing more people sleeping rough on our streets.”

The 120-odd residents have been given notice, but 24 are this month scheduled to appear before the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal to plead for extra time. A hearing listed for last Wednesday was adjourned until Monday.

About 20 per cent of residents were deemed “high-risk” because of age or health, and have managed to secure public places, catapulted to the top of the 30,000-strong waiting list.

Police allege the 30-year-old groped a child and a woman at the US pop star’s concert at Margaret Court Arena on August 6 last year.

The Altona Meadows man faced Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday on fresh charges. He allegedly exposed himself twice on the 412 bus between Laverton and Footscray on March 6 while on bail.

He is also charged with possessing child pornography images and videos, as well as two counts of stalking.

The man’s bail was revoked on Wednesday following the most recent charges, the court heard.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Giovanni Lazzaro said it took a year and a half for police to investigate the child pornography charge, which involved a great deal of technological analysis.

The man is also facing charges of groping and rubbing against a person in a sexual manner without their consent.

About 18 witnesses, including children, are expected to give evidence in relation to the groping charges, the court heard.

The man’s lawyer, Kimberly Phair, said her client suffered depression and suicidal thoughts, and had asked to see a psychologist. He was remanded to face court again on April 21.

Bumpy ride for cycle plan

By Benjamin Millar A new elevated cycling route from the Maribyrnong River to the CBD has been cautiously welcomed by some cyclists, but panned by others as “green-washing”.

The 2.5 kilometre “veloway” would be suspended beneath a freeway raised above Footscray Road as part of the rebranded West Gate tunnel project, connecting with a new bridge over Footscray Road near Costco.

The enclosed pathway would be part of 14 kilometres of new and upgraded cycling and walking paths in the project, including the Federation Trail’s missing link, a new path along Hyde Street and a new bridge over Whitehall Street next to Yarraville Gardens, near where cyclist Arju Baglar, a mother of two, died after colliding with a truck on March 10.

The proposal has been welcomed by some cyclists as a quicker route with fewer traffic lights, as others question whether it will ever be built and suggest it is being used to ‘greenwash’ the freeway project.

Bicycle Victoria has backed the veloway and the addition of new bike lanes from Dynon Road into the west end of the city.

But community group Western Connection expressed wariness at the public “being sold a corporate monstrosity lined with promises of trinkets and frills”.

Williamstown MP Wade Noonan said the new cycling infrastructure will mean almost entirely off-road cycling routes between Werribee and the CBD. “This new path will take cyclists and pedestrians away from that dangerous intersection of Somerville Road and Whitehall Street,” he said. “Upon completion, this will be some of the best walking and cycling infrastructure anywhere in Victoria.”

Western suburbs Greens MP Colleen Hartland accused Labor of blackmailing people rather than caring about cycling safety.

“They are really spruiking this bike route, but

the fact is they could do this right now if they wanted to, rather than waiting until 2022 and using it to blackmail people into supporting Transurban’s massive new freeway.”

Plan to bring trugo home The return of the west’s very own sport is a step closer after a concept plan to revitalise the former Footscray Trugo Club was put out for public feedback.

Maribyrnong councillors last week voted unanimously to seek views on a proposal that would return trugo to its former home at 139 Buckley Street, while opening up the space for broader community use.

The plan involves upgrading the lawn, seating, shelters and fencing while a further report is proposed for the future of the dilapidated pavilion on the 630 square-metre site.

Refurbishing the existing pavilion, including installing a new toilet, has been estimated to cost $370,000.

Other plans include removing the pavilion and replacing it with a shelter with storage, at a cost of $120,000 or $200,000 with a toilet.

Footscray Trugo Club co-president Justin Mansfield told last week’s council meeting the trugo site had operated from 1937 to 2009, and was a strong part of the area’s sporting and social fabric.

“There has been a groundswell of local support and we’re really gratified and feel privileged council is looking to support its return,” he said.

Councillor Mia McGregor said returning trugo would be a good opportunity to revitalise the space, while Cr Sarah Carter said it was positive to see the community take the lead.

Fines totalling more than $1 million have been issued to 13,875 registered voters in Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong alleged to have failed to vote in last year’s council elections.

The Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) has issued 7972 infringement notices to voters in Maribyrnong and 5903 in Hobsons Bay. Seabrook resident Antoinette Gerada said she received a $78 fine, despite posting her vote before the due date at Point Cook town centre.

“I was utterly shocked,” she said. “I heard on 3AW that hundreds of people who had voted, like myself, received fines and were blaming Australia Post.

“However, I posted mine together with my two adult sons at the same time … I have spoken with the VEC and have applied for an internal review.”

West Footscray resident Rachel Allan said she and her husband sent off their postal votes together.

“He then received a letter asking why he didn’t vote – I didn’t get a letter, so obviously mine went through,” she said. “He noted on this letter that he did vote, and we have now received an infringement notice.

“What are we meant to do?”

Other residents have complained of being fined despite voting, and of not receiving failure to vote notices allowing them to explain that they had voted.

An Australia Post spokesman said “all ballot papers were delivered as addressed and according to our delivery timetables”, while VEC spokesman Lawson Fletcher said many votes were invalid because they were dated or mailed after October 21, a requirement he said was “clearly detailed in voting material.”

Retirement living at its best

Artist Geoffrey Ricardo has been toiling away in a Sunshine foundry hand-making eight giant sculptures for the Kororoit Creek Trail.

The celebrated artist says he’s spending six days a week holed up in Fundere Fine Art Foundry to ensure the 3.3-metre tall figures are completed before his July deadline.

He first makes the steel frames, then coats these with resin and mesh. Eventually, each piece will weigh as much as 300 kilograms and have an outer marble shell.

In September last year, Hobsons Bay council awarded Ricardo a $330,000 commission, funded by Toyota, to produce the art works for the Altona North trail.

The Brooklyn resident says each figure represents a “spirit” of the creek-side landscape, walking or pausing along its banks, a “ reflection and discussion of the many things we are as human beings”.

The sculpture with an armful of birds (pictured) is “a guardian of the creek”. It holds Indigenous birds that have returned since the Friends of Kororoit Creek began rehabilitating the waterway.

“There’s the planes flying overhead,” Ricardo says of the figure leaning back, its face tilted to the sky. Each sculpture will have a poem at its base, written by an Australian author about the work.

Newly arrived migrants have been getting a kick out of their time in the west thanks to the Western Bulldogs.

The 10th annual CALDplay Football Gala was held as part of recent Cultural Diversity Week celebrations, bringing together more than 150 participants from Adult Migrant English Programs and community centres across the west for football games and activities.

The Western Bulldogs Community Foundation event uses sport to encourage interaction between newly arrived migrants, develop English language skills and improve understanding of Australian sports culture.

The foundation also brings people into the fold via its new ADAPTERs program, helping reduce the gaps between service providers and the community.

Program leader Quang Huynh said he loved working with kids and students from multicultural backgrounds.

“I was a refugee as well – I know what it’s like having English as a second language,” he said.

“It’s great seeing the kids who are a bit shy when they first come here pick up words and really come out of themselves.”

Urban artists unleashed Judges of the inaugural Footscray Art Prize have expressed amazement at the quality of entries, after being inundated with more than 800 submissions.

Entries have been painstakingly whittled down to a shortlist of slightly more than 140 works, announced on Tuesday.

The art prize was developed by Victoria University, Maribrynong council, Footscray Community Arts Centre and Footscray Rotary.

Prizemoney totalling $17,500 will be awarded across four categories, including a $10,000 main prize.

Entries are being judged by leading artists and curators Reko Rennie, Jason Smith, Beverly Knight and Richard Ennis. Smith said the range of works submitted was inspiring.

“The sheer volume, diversity and exceptional merit of artists’ submissions made the shortlisting process a challenging one,” he said.

“We were really struck by the artists’ images of, and connections to, community and their locality.”

The judges were looking for works “rich in ideas and technically excellent in execution”.

Winners will be announced on May 25 at the opening of an exhibition showcasing the shortlisted artists.

The exhibition will be held at Footscray Community Arts Centre (main prize), VU at MetroWest (tertiary and young artists prize), and in central Footscray (street art prize).

Short life inspires long crusade for awareness

When Maribyrnong College teacher Aaron Hester lost his nine-year-old daughter Lily to cancer in 2014, he felt his whole world crumble.

Yet from his sense of helplessness and grief grew a burning desire to help other families faced with childhood cancer – and so the Life for Lily Foundation was born.

“In 2013, my daughter Lily was diagnosed with an extremely rare liver cancer and within 11 months we lost her,” he said.

“A year later we created the Life for Lily Foundation, after a period that seemed like a haze, to raise awareness of childhood cancer,

which claims the lives of three Australian children every week.”

Mr Hester and a team of cyclists took off from the Children’s Cancer Institute in Sydney on Saturday on the Ride for Lily, eager to raise more than $200,000 for cancer research and treatment.

“Cancer treatments for children are very expensive,” Mr Hester said.

“We’re hoping to help more families through this.”

Salvo fired in waste war

By Goya Dmytryshchak The Salvation Army in Altona is fearful it will be swamped with rubbish over Easter and is pleading with people to stop using its local church and op shop as a “free tip”.

Captain Matthew Kean said it was costing the Salvos a tonne of money to dispose of poor-quality donations and, in some cases, plain rubbish.

“We don’t want to take the road of prosecuting people and looking through digital camera video,” he said.

“I would probably be more inclined to think that people are taking advantage of not having to pay for tip fees – because they’re ridiculous.

“Our problem just continues to persist.

“Sometimes we’ll come in and there will be couches and old mattresses and old cupboards that are just rubbish. The other day we got a couch that was … it was just absolute filth.”

He said each week the Salvos paid for a giant bin to be emptied, and also did tip runs to dispose of the rubbish.

Mr Kean said holidays such as Easter were notorious for dumping. He said the money being spent on disposal could otherwise be going to people in need.

“We had quite a big operation at Christmas: we fed heaps of families, put on Christmas dinners and stocked people’s shelves with food,” Mr Kean said. “So, we asked for a tonne of donations. But, my goodness, the stuff that came in that rubbish was ridiculous.”

The Salvation Army seeks quality donations and cannot accept white goods or electrical items.

Blues club puts down new roots

The Way Out West (WOW) Roots Music Club, formerly at the now-closed Williamstown RSL Club, will be based at the Newport Bowls Club.

What’s your connection to Hobsons Bay? My connection to Hobsons Bay goes back to childhood when I would come over with the family via the old steam ferry … in Port Melbourne, to come and visit Williamstown and go to the Newport Railway Museum and things like that. In ’86, I was the third youth development worker for the city of Williamstown. I bought a house in Williamstown North and settled in and became embedded in the community and joined what’s now called the Williamstown Music Theatre Company – it used to be the Light Opera Company – and did lots of jolly productions there like The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and Grease. I used to play the comedic roles. I was pretty heavily involved in the old Williamstown Festival. I moved to Newport in ’96 when I got married.

CHANGES TO THE RESIDENTIAL ZONES ACROSS VICTORIA The Victorian Government has reformed the residential zones that apply across metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria. This has changed the rules around how new dwellings can be developed in Hobsons Bay. The zone changes were introduced into the Victorian Planning System on 27 March 2017.

They make substantial changes to the General Residential Zone (GRZ), Neighbourhood Residential Zone (NRZ) and slight changes to the Residential Growth Zone (RGZ) and Mixed Use Zone (MUZ).

What are the changes?

The key changes include: • an increase in the maximum height of buildings in the GRZ from a discretionary height of nine metres to a mandatory height of 11 metres (new three storey height limit); • removal of the limit to the number of dwellings that can be built on land in the NRZ; • a new mandatory requirement for a minimum garden area to be provided in residential developments in the GRZ and NRZ (for lots greater than 400 square metres); • the minimum garden area requirements also apply to single dwellings on a lot that do not require a planning permit.

How does this impact me?

The majority of residentially zoned land in Hobsons Bay is within the GRZ. Council is working on reviewing all residential zones in the city to ensure the zones are applied appropriately.

If you are planning on developing new dwellings or extending an existing dwelling, then these changes may affect you.

When do the new zone changes take effect?

The reformed zones took effect on 27 March 2017 but transitional arrangements apply to ensure that development proposals received prior to 27 March and currently being considered are not unfairly disadvantaged.

This means that the new zone changes do not apply to existing planning permit applications for the construction, subdivision or extension of a dwelling or residential building lodged before 27 March 2017.

The ravioli are stuffed with a simple mix of seasoned ricotta and served with Kunserva cooked lightly with olive oil and (I think) garlic.

Maltese pizzas are called gozitan ftria – they’re a good deal deeper and heftier than their Italian cousins. The potato and ricotta pie ($15) is deep and substantial.

Luckily, we’ve left room for some of the famed Maltese desserts.

The Maltese take on bread pudding – pudina tal-hobz ($6 per serve), has a chocolate-andcherry thing going on.

Imqaret are extremely fine deep-fried date slices ($6 for three). And there’s a big slice of the Maltese carnival cake called prinjolata. It defies its pinkish colouring by tasting quite like a rich fruit cake or Christmas cake.

In the years that Consider The Sauce has been running, I’ve come across quite a few people of Maltese background.

Invariably, I’ve always had the same question: Why aren’t there one or more Maltese eateries in the west?

I need ask that question no longer, as now there’s Cafe Verdala.

This eatery is located in the rooms of the Maltese Cultural Centre in Albion. This kind of community-based food and set-up are just the sort of things that get CTS truly excited!

We start with the tasting platter called platt Verdala ghal-tnejn ($22.50 for two).

This is simple, wholesome fare – Maltese bread, broad-bean dip, capers, tuna, olives, caponata, olive oil, the dry Maltese crackers known as galetti and mini versions of the open pies known as qassatat (these ones filled with sausage).

The biggest surprise here is the tomato paste.

I’d heard and read about the seemingly miraculous Three Hills brand Kunserva tomato paste and how Maltese folks simply love it, as is, slathered on bread.

No wonder! It really is good – in no way bitter, quite sweet and very yummy.

If Kunserva can be seen as something of a Maltese national food, pastizzi are right up there, too. Here they’re served, with a variety of fillings, alongside more, full-size qassatat.

Another adored Maltese food? Rabbit.

SPORT Devil at play in Altona criterium There was enough drizzle falling to make the track tricky for the first five laps in B grade.

An early four-man break built a huge margin on the main bunch, with Hawthorn rider Nathan Basaraba taking a strong win from Geelong’s Josh Williams and Mark Spiteri.

Basaraba, a 34 year old from Moonee Ponds, deftly made the move to attack, establishing a break when another break was being reeled in and everyone was on the rivet.

“I started the break, gassed it when the bunch caught the break – we three worked really well together, and then Josh bridged across to us,

which was no mean feat,” he said. “With one lap to go, I was last wheel going around the back of the course, and I jumped first and came into the straight first wheel.”

In C grade, Marcus Olive took a commanding win from James Danos, with the pair well clear of Colin Morris in third place.

First place in the D grade race was scooped

by Chris Fenech from Bob McAllan and Gary Whalley. Emma Andrews took the win in E grade, finishing well clear of the chasers.

Western Jets power up

By Lance Jenkinson Western Jets bounced back from an opening round defeat in the sweetest possible way thrashing rivals Calder Cannons by 31 points in the TAC Cup second round at Highgate Recreation Reserve on Saturday.

Jets’ coach Torin Baker was thrilled his team could reap the rewards of hard work after a first round slip-up.

“It was nice for the boys to get some reward after just dipping out [in a narrow loss to the Northern Knights] last week,” he said.

“There’s a healthy respect [between the Jets and Calder] because a lot of the players know one another, they go to school with one another, and they play in local football competitions with and against each other.

“It’s a good healthy rivalry that we’ve got, but we certainly respect the Cannons for the way they go about their footy.”

It was a more refined Western Jets that took to the field on Saturday.

Just like the week before, the Jets enjoyed the lion’s share of the midfield battle, but this time they made it count, with much better transition from midfield to attack.

“The midfield battle was probably the telling factor in the game,” Baker said.

“Over the course of the day, we were consistently winning the clearance battle … a number of our mids had really solid games, so they generated enough ball forward for us.

“Whereas last week we didn’t make the most of our inside 50 entries early, this week we were at least kicking to our forwards’ advantage.

“We were much more dangerous as a forward group. Playing together another week just helped with that chemistry.”

Judah Dundon has started the season on fire for the Western Jets, and was once again a driving force with his precision kicking.

“His kicking has been something we’ve relied on from a team point of view,” Baker said.

“He’s one who is consistently hitting targets for us, which is pleasing.”

Lachlan Fogarty showed why he is on course for a big say in destiny of Vic Metro’s under-18 national championships.

Fogarty’s ability to work hard both ways has endeared him to his coach and his teammates.

“He had a fantastic game again,” Baker said.

“It’s his work rate, pressure on the opposition and ability to win clearances.

“We won’t have Lachie until the last two games of the year now … he’s got the AFL Academy game this weekend, and then we’ll break for Easter and school football will start.

“He’ll play for five or six weeks, then he’ll go on and play for Vic Metro at the national championships, and go back to school footy,” Fogarty said.

Xavier O’Halloran caught the eye in just his second game for the Jets at TAC Cup level, while Cameron Rayner, Harrison Bult and Zak Butters were among the best.

footy got under way with a classic clash between Deer Park and Altona last weekend and they have set a very high standard for the rest of the competition and the season. Those who have written the reigning premiers off need to have a rethink. Quality players such as Kwame McHarg, Shannon Byrnes, Rodney Van Riet and Jason Kennedy will ensure they are in the hunt for premiership honours in 2017.

Altona has a few bugs to iron out but it has a lot to look forward to for the season. Albion got a great first-up win and Werribee Districts will again be a force. This weekend Hoppers Crossing and St Albans will make their debut for the year and the progress of both teams will be interesting. Warriors senior coach Steve Kretiuk and his partner Carly timed their parental debut perfectly with Miller Adam Tadeusz Kretiuk coming into the world last Thursday. Congrats to Krusher and the family.

unfurling of the Bulldogs premiership flag was another highly charged emotional moment for the red, white and blue army last Friday night.

Brad Johnson, Tony Liberatore, Scott West, Gary Dempsey, Peter Welsh, Susan Alberti, Alan Johnstone, Irene Chatfield, John Schultz, Mark Kimpton, Garry Johnson, Gary Hincks, Chris Grant and Rohan Smith and a few others had carried the cup and the flag to centre stage. It was fitting to see 1954 premiership player Angus Abbey and the great Doug Hawkins raise the flag. Hawkins’ great Braybrook mate Russell Gilbert was enjoying the moment in the crowd as every Bulldogs fan did. This was extra special for Gilbert as he has had some enormous health challenges in recent times. He is on the long road to recovery and the Bulldogs success has been good for him and many others.

cricket whites have gone into mothballs for another six months but one performance that will be talked about for a long time came from the Yarraville Club Cricket Club’s veteran opening bowler Emmett Bronca in the grand final. In the first innings he took a tidy five for 53 but his second innings haul of seven for 74 won the game and man-of-the-match plaudits.

He finished the season on top of the competition wicket tally with 43 at an average of 14.21. Players are judged by their performance in the big game and Emmett deserves the highest of praise and accolades.

Footscray Cycling Club spiced up its traditional criterium racing by adding a ‘devil take the hindmost’ clause, which eliminates the last rider on set laps.

The A-grade race over the short Drake Boulevard circuit at Altona was hit with a series of early attacks that left the main bunch on the rivet, while a decisive breakaway bunch formed at the pointy end.

But the bunch was never able to peg back the escapees. Club champion Dom Dudkiewicz took the sprint decisively from Matthew Robertson and Matthias Kiernan.

Woodsmen prove to be road warriors Spotswood has opened the new season with a gutsy road victory, coming from behind at three-quarter time to beat Sunshine Kangaroos by 14 points in Western Region Football League division 1 at Kinder Smith Reserve on Saturday.

The Woodsmen were efficient in front of goal, converting 14 of their 25 scoring shots to amass a winning score.

The same could not be said for the Kangaroos, who missed their first eight shots and finished up with more behinds than goals.

Fast-finishing Spotswood piled on seven goals to four in the last term.

The Magpies will be at home in round one against Laverton, which will play under new coach Sam Young for the first time.

Parkside could unveil boom off season recruit Jason Cloke, who featured in 76 games

for Collingwood between 2002-06 and had a successful run with Spotswood, including a premiership in 2011.

Cloke has moved to the Magpies after a stint with Craigieburn in the Essendon District Football League.

Vikings bow to pressure

By Lance Jenkinson Altona has moved beyond the stage of accepting honourable losses.

The Vikings were left with a sour after-taste when they slipped to four-peat premiers Deer Park by nine points in the Western Region Football League division 1 season opener at John McLeod Oval on Saturday.

It was a contest worthy of September – the Vikings showed they will be serious contenders in the top flight this season, but it was not enough to satisfy coach Saade Ghazi.

“We’re in it to win games of footy, and honourable losses don’t interest me in any way,” he said. “For us to take the next step – we finished fourth last year – we’re aiming to finish in the top three.

“That loss is a big blow because you’ve got to get probably 12 wins, and that leaves us 17 games to get 12 wins now.

“We’re putting pressure on the group, we’re putting pressure on myself and the match committee, that’s the way we want it.

“We’ve got goals and if we don’t achieve those goals, it will be a failure.”

After a number of twists and turns, Altona had the champions where it wanted them at three-quarter time.

The Vikings held an eight-point lead going into the last quarter, but did not have the composure to clinch the four points.

Deer Park kicked four of the last five goals of the match to finish a memorable day when it unfurled its 2016 flag with a win.

“We had our chances,” Ghazi said.

“It was a strong contest, a few mistakes from both teams, but they were too good on the day, so you’ve got to give credit where it’s due.

“I was really disappointed with some of our skills errors, but I guess with the opposition putting pressure on you, that’s what happens.”

Prized recruit Steve Kennedy showed why Altona was thrilled to secure his signature.

Kennedy kicked three goals and collected plenty of ball across the midfield and half forward.

Mark Paget, another new recruit, had a limited off season, but showed he will be an important acquisition to bolster the ruck stocks.

The Vikings were also thrilled to see Jayden Post in the purple and gold after his football career was put on hold last season by a burst artery in one of his legs.

Altona’s gruelling start to 2017 will not get any easier this week with last season’s runners-up, Hoppers Crossing, paying a visit to JK Grant Reserve on Saturday.

Hoppers will enter the game fresh after their round one game was postponed to Good Friday.

But Ghazi believes the tough hit-out against Deer Park will stand his side in good stead.

“No matter how many games you’ve played in your career, you always get the cobwebs out in that first game,” he said.

“We’ve had a really strong contest in the heat of the battle.

“I think it will work for us,” he said.

Walshe steers the Rams in right direction It’s the work that Newport Rams’ secretary Paul Walshe puts in behind the scenes that makes his selection as the Baseball Victoria volunteer-of-the year a no-brainer.

No job is too big or small for Walshe, who devotes hours of his week to ensure the Rams run like a division one club.

Over and above his role as the Rams secretary, Walshe can take on numerous titles from groundsman, council liaison, equipment manager and sponsorship manager.

Rams’ president Ben Portelli knows the side would be worse off without Walshe.

“He’s just brilliant,” Portelli said. “He does all the jobs that no one knows need to be done.”

Walshe’s passion for Newport Rams comes from his dad, who was club president when Walshe was growing up.

Walshe did have some time away from KC White Reserve as a player, but he was always going to return.

“He loves this club,” Portelli said. “He had some time away and, since he’s come back, he’s just immersed himself in the place.

“If he’s not working at the club, he’s thinking about the club; if he’s not thinking about the club, he’s not far away.”

Walshe has even opened his doors for Newport Rams imports. This season, the league’s most valuable player, Jimmy Jensen, stayed with Walshe all season.

“Sight unseen, he said he could stay at his house, and he fed him, he looked after him, he was dad, he was brother, he was everything,” Portelli said.

“He was Jimmy’s support network.”

The Rams’ relationship with local council and Baseball Victoria is also strong, in part due to Walshe’s ability to engage with those organisations.

“We were talking about what it takes to be a model club, and we were told that we are a model club, and that’s through Paul’s work,” Portelli said.

“We have a fantastic working relationship with the council at all levels, and his functional relationships are second to none.

“I’ve seen it first hand; I haven’t had to do much, the relationship he’s got with sports and recreation is second to none.”

The reward for Walshe at the end of the week is seeing Newport Rams thrive.

Walshe gets to sit back for three hours on weekends and watch his two sons give their all to the Rams in a playing sense.

“The fact that his two sons are playing, and playing at a high level with the club, just fills him with pride,” Portelli said.

Altona works its magic on Eagles Altona Magic made light work of North Sunshine Eagles in its 3-0 win at Paisley Park Soccer Complex on Saturday evening.

The Magic flexed its offensive muscle in the first half to lead by two goals at half-time, then found an insurance goal in the second half to claim a second victory from as many starts in the new Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1 season.

Adamson Ajayi continues to be a menace for opposition teams in front of goal. The Magic marksman scored a double to sink the Eagles, making it three goals in two games.

Ajayi also scored in the Magic’s 8-1 thrashing of North City Wolves in the FFA Cup. Nikola Markovski scored his first goal in the league for the season. He, too, was on target in the FFA Cup, scoring three goals in two games.

Magic goalkeeper Michael Stark secured a clean sheet.

Now second on the ladder on goal difference, Magic go into Saturday evening’s local derby with Altona East Phoenix full of confidence after two league wins on the trot and four in all competitions.

Yarraville Glory, winners in the first round, were knocked back by an impressive Geelong.

The Glory was hammered 4-1 in a home opener, Reuben Agyei Danso’s late goal little consolation – now a tough trip to undefeated Banyule City awaits.

In state league 2, Altona City claimed a solid 3-0 win on the road over Essendon United.

Marcus Sherif was a thorn in United’s side with two goals, while David Taylor scored the other.

Fifth-placed City is undefeated with four points in two games, a record to be tested when it faces fourth-ranked Corio away on Saturday.

Melbourne City has had a hellish start to its state league 3 campaign, losing its first two matches, coughing up nine goals and not pinning any. City is rock bottom after Saturday’s 3-0 loss to Epping City.

by Whittlesea United on Saturday, while the state league 4 season started badly for Altona North, which had a second consecutive defeat, mauled 6-1 away to Bell Park. Laverton Park may be an early title contender in state league 5, particularly after Saturday’s 6-0 trouncing of Spring Hills.

Good, but not good enough

By Lance Jenkinson Altona East Phoenix has produced some good football in the opening two rounds of the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1 season, but good just does not cut it in a league flush with big-spending teams rolling out high-profile recruits.

Altona East has succumbed to one-goal defeats in its first two games, cruelly leaving them in third-last spot without a point to show for their toil.

The Phoenix’s 3-2 loss to Keilor Park at Keilor Park Recreation Reserve on Saturday, a game that could have gone either way, demonstrated how tough points will be to come by in this competition.

Phoenix president Jim Dimitriou said the losses did not constitute a case for criticising the players.

“The guys have lost two games, but they certainly haven’t let themselves down,” he said.

“The way it’s going, it’s going to be a tough year. The boys will keep battling along.”

For the first 45 minutes, Altona East and Keilor Park went back and forth without fashioning too many clear-cut chances.

The 0-0 scoreline at the break was a true reflection of two sides desperate to claim their first wins of the season.

After half-time, things livened up on the back of a penalty awarded to Keilor Park after a shot was parried away by a Phoenix hand.

Joel Nikolic stepped up to put Keilor Park in front and then doubled the Parkers’ lead with a headed goal.

While down on the scoreboard, Altona East kept in touching distance in general play.

The Phoenix halved the deficit through Tristan Romein, who scored a header from a corner.

Unfortunately, for the Allen Vella-coached Phoenix, the side leaked a goal on the back of some individual brilliance from Keilor Park sub Supreet Sangha.

Joel Bistricki scrambled a goal back for Altona East after a shot rebounded off the post.

With Keilor Park down to 10 men following Nikolic’s dismissal for a second yellow card, Altona East huffed and puffed to find an equaliser, but could not blow the house down – and wound up losing by a goal for the second week running.

“The boys showed a lot of fight,” Dimitriou said.

“We just ran out of time when I thought we could’ve found an equaliser.”

There is no respite on the horizon for Altona East.

Gators go long, still fall short Altona Gators could not buy a basket from inside the arc in a 74-63 loss to Camberwell Dragons in the Big V basketball men’s division 2 at the Altona Sports Centre on Saturday.

It was the long ball that kept the Gators close on the scoreboard – they landed just as many threes as twos.

The Gators finished with a sloppy 11 from 40 (27 per cent) from the field.

The exception for the Gators was Tommy Scott, who finished with 23 points on 47 per cent shooting, five rebounds, two assists and three three-pointers.

Jordan Lino was solid off the bench for the Gators with four points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Three straight losses to start the season have the Gators in last place on the ladder.

They will be keen to snap out of their funk on Friday night when they travel to play Collingwood All-Stars at Collingwood College before returning home on Sunday for a clash with the Mornington Breakers.

In women’s division 2, the Gators endured one of the biggest losses in team history, going down 122-37 to Warrnambool Mermaids at the Altona Sports Centre on Sunday.

The Gators were out-played from start to finish by the undefeated Mermaids.

Alysha Carden-David still managed to post strong numbers for the Gators with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Carden-David is averaging a double-double in points and rebounds.

The Gators (0-3) hit the road on Sunday to play the Craigieburn Eagles (1-2).

On a Friday night to savour, the Western Bulldogs unfurled their 2016 AFL premiership flag in front of their adoring fans at Etihad Stadium. The ceremony took place before the Bulldogs’ grand final re-match with the Sydney Swans, which turned out to be a pulsating game in its own right. The Bulldogs emerged victorious by 23 points, moving to 2-0 for the season.

Rugby union

Footscray has started the Victorian Rugby Union Dewar Shield season with consecutive losses. The good news for the Bulldogs is they will not have to face last year’s grand finalists until the second half of the year. The Bulldogs completed their nightmare opening fortnight with a 42-17 loss to Harlequin at Henry Turner Reserve on Saturday.

Footscray will be out to secure its first win of the season when it travels to Moorabbin on Saturday.

Rugby league

It was one and done for the Altona Roosters in the NRL Victoria nines competition. The Roosters had their feathers plucked by reigning champions Werribee Bears in a 32-0 whitewash at AAMI Park on Saturday night. It means the Roosters can turn their full attention to the league season, beginning with a trip to take on Casey Warriors on Saturday.
