Relay’s royal welcome By Goya Dmytryshchak and Benjamin Millar History was made when the Queen’s Baton sailed into Williamstown on Saturday on its way to the opening ceremony of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games on April 4. The baton had journeyed from Docklands on a coxless quad and a Victorian water police vessel and finally on the tall ship Enterprize. On Gem Pier, Sunbury’s Hedley Elliott handed the baton to Maurie Tanian, past president of the Lions Club of Altona. Past Victorian Volunteer of the Year Patricia Insall handed the baton to philanthropist Hayden Raysmith, chairman of the Hobsons Bay Community Fund. Nathan Pellissier, who aims to represent Australia in table tennis at the Tokyo Paralympics in 2020, carried the baton along Williamstown’s coastline. Williamstown Swimming and Life Saving Club members formed a guard of honour for baton bearer Carol Fox, one of Australia’s first professional female lifeguards and head of Women Sport Australia. Among the youngest bearers were Taj Fazekas, who shares his Aboriginal culture among local sports clubs, and Alex Gatt who is living with spinal muscular atrophy and is an inspiration to others. The crowd cheered and ran alongside as the relay journeyed through Williamstown and Altona on its way to Footscray. The Footscray leg began at Whitten Oval and travelled through Footscray’s central shopping district and past Footscray town hall before making a grand entrance under the Saigon Welcome Arch. A community celebration was held at the Little Saigon Precinct featuring entertainment from local school children and Melbourne rock trio Kingswood.
