Strand Ward D McLean Reserve amenities We’re pleased to say construction will soon begin on a new public amenities facility and a new curator’s storeroom at one of the largest open spaces in the Spotswood area, D McLean Reserve. The public amenities facility, which will include male and female toilets and one unisex accessible toilet, is in addition to the Roy Picone Pavilion which is located in the centre of the reserve. Works will commence in May 2014 and will be completed by the end of July 2014, weather permitting. Once up and running, the toilets will be free to use during the day and locked overnight.

Wetlands Ward HD Graham Reserve amenities Works are scheduled to commence mid-May on new public toilets at HD Graham Reserve. The toilets will be located off Andrew Park Drive opposite the Altona Sports Centre and will provide two unisex accessible toilets with an accessible car park. Lights at Altona tennis club We have just begun installation of new floodlights for the six unlit courts at Altona Tennis Courts. This means all eleven courts at the club will be

floodlit once the project is completed, weather permitting, by the end of June. Millers Road pedestrian crossing We’re pleased to announce the completion of the school crossing on Millers Road as we know the school has wanted this crossing for a long time. Works finished on 24th April and pedestrians currently have two options available at school times: the underpass and the children’s crossing. A traffic/ pedestrian survey is to be conducted in early to mid-May to understand the pedestrian use of both facilities.

Fearon Reserve update Works are progressing well at Fearon since the turf sods were laid over four weeks ago. The turf’s looking pretty healthy with the roots establishing themselves well. Once we are satisfied that the turf is fully established and the new light tower has been installed, we will arrange for the temporary fence to be removed and the area can be used once again. We will then liaise with the clubs to ensure this area is well managed and look after on an ongoing basis.

Newport Lakes signs It was encouraging to see so many members of the community coming together this Sunday in support of Trish Langford and her dog Lucy. We’ve erected signs around the reserve alerting dog-owners to the recent incident and we’re continuing with increased patrols of the area. People and their pets having safe enjoyment in our open spaces is something we take seriously and we urge anyone who has information regarding the baiting to contact Crime Stoppers immediately on 1800 333 000.

I have come to the conclusion that the only thing sacred to our present herd of federal and state politicians is their own survival. Look at the very generous pensions and lurks, and their propensity to not cut back any spending on events such as the Grand Prix while slashing pensions, education, research and health. These are the very things that make the quality of life in Australia admired around the world. Before the last election, one of the state Labor members promised that, if elected, they would spend millions upgrading the Ballarat football complex. We see many such promises. And yet

many nursing homes are being closed. These homes are, in a lot of cases, where our elderly and our frail are waiting to go to God. The homes are used 24 hours of the day, seven days a week. No football complex could boast of the use of their service to the needy. Let us look at it logically. There are no votes in nursing homes, and politicians are only interested in winning elections. Politicians, to ease their conscience, open Parliament with the Lord’s Prayer. But perhaps, instead of reciting the prayer like a lot of parrots, they should take a few moments to try to understand the contents. John Patterson, Williamstown. Health merger ‘raises voice’

Army rallies the troops By Xavier Smerdon Residents are being urged to dig deep and help raise much-needed funds to help victims of domestic violence and homelessness. Salvation Army Captain Lance Jeffrey said a crew of social workers was hoping to raise a record amount of money during this month’s Red Shield Appeal. Last year, the local crew raised $62,000, which directly funded the Salvation Army’s social work initiatives.

“That was an exceptional year. It was a pretty significant amount to raise from one area,” Captain Jeffrey said. “We’ve actually found that we’ve been able to raise more every year; it seems like people in Wyndham are more in tune with people doing it tough. They seem to be very empathetic to the parts of the community that might be struggling.” Captain Jeffrey said the Salvation Army needed people to donate money; but it’s also on the lookout for people to volunteer during the appeal.

“People are always fantastic. When we come to their door they say, ‘Just give me a minute to get some money’ before we’ve even had a chance to say what we’re collecting for,” he said. “[But] We need volunteers to collect money at intersections and shopping centres and also to go door-to-door collecting.” The Red Shield Appeal is from May 19-25. Residents will have better access to health services following the merger of three community health groups. Western Region Health Centre, Doutta Galla Community Health and North Yarra Community Health have combined to form Cohealth, and will provide community health services across Melbourne’s western and northern suburbs. Transitional chief executive Lyn Morgain says the new organisation will improve services available in the area. “We want to work with the community to expand services and meet their needs,’’ she said. ‘‘We are very keen to improve access to community health services. ‘‘It is a developing community where there’s significant growth and demand for services.” Ms Morgain said the merger would allow Cohealth to attract more government funding and allow it to have a stronger voice to fight for fair and accessible health services. “We believe this merger gives us an opportunity to secure the funding and resources we need to remain a trusted, well-resourced service for local communities. “[The merger] is about maximising the money available for funding and accessing as much of the available government funding as we can.”

Sisters’ song of hope Two sisters from the inner west are pinning their hopes on the power of music to change the world for the better. West Footscray’s Rebecca Spalding (left) and her sister Ellen Spalding, of Yarraville, are giving a new lease of life to Rebecca’s song Refuge, a plea for compassion towards asylum seekers and refugees. Singer-songwriter Rebecca said she wrote the song in response to immigration policies under the Howard government, but the message was more relevant than ever. Briefs Audit would end ‘fair go’

Recommendations in the federal government’s Commission of Audit would severely impact the western suburbs community, according to social service providers and local politicians. Opposition leader and Maribyrnong MP Bill Shorten said the plan would punish young jobseekers by removing income support while cutting the education and training programs they need to help gain employment. Boat destroyed

A boat was destroyed by fire at Altona boat ramp on Friday night. Victoria Police spokeswoman Sergeant Creina O’Grady said a man had started the boat’s ignition when sparks and flames appeared in the instrument panel area. He was unable to put the fire out with an extinguisher. The fire destroyed the boat while he went for help. No one was injured.

Man held on rape charges

A 32-year-old real estate agent has been charged with multiple counts of rape after a woman was allegedly attacked and held against her will at a vacant property in Melbourne. Henry Jiang, of Maidstone, has been charged with false imprisonment, five counts of rape, two counts of indecent assault and theft. He is accused of raping a 35-year-old woman at the vacant property in Doncaster East about 3am on April 2. He made no application for bail in a brief appearance

in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Sunday. Magistrate Ross Betts remanded Jiang in custody until Thursday for his next court appearance.

Truck drivers test positive

Police from the Heavy Vehicle Unit have nabbed three truck drivers in three hours for drug use. Officers intercepted a 36-year-old Kurunjang man on Geelong Road, West Footscray, about 9.30am. He tested positive for speed and ecstasy. An hour later on the same road, a 45-year-old Western Australian man driving a prime mover returned a positive test for cannabis. About 12.30pm, a 46-year-old Laverton North tip truck driver was intercepted on Little Boundary Road in Laverton North. He was found to have cannabis in his system. The three will be issued with penalty notices.

Pelicans hit the road Hobsons Bay Men’s Shed is urging men to seize the day and join its Pelicans Cycling Group. The group, whose motto is Carpe Diem (“seize the day”), was started by ISIS Primary Care in Altona to get clients back in the saddle after heart surgery. Men’s Shed publicity officer Graeme Borlase said the group was part of a broader initiative to look after the health and well-being of members. “The group rides each Tuesday, mostly following the bike trails in Hobsons Bay

and around the inner city,” he said. “We have up to 10 riders attending on Tuesdays, meeting at the Altona Pier or at Flinders Street railway station, where we ride to Port Melbourne [via light rail trail] or follow the Yarra to Dights Falls and circumnavigate Melbourne city.” The rides can cover more than 50 kilometres. Children walked to the Mason Street centre, where they entertained residents such as Jenny Ralston (pictured with Aston, Keira, Chloe and Jasmine). The kids also performed songs including You Are My Sunshine, and presented gifts of hand-made cards and artwork. It has been developed into a quarantine centre, so international horses are based at Werribee during the Spring Racing Carnival, which has given it a very important role and creates significant local jobs. Having that quarantine centre has guaranteed the future of the racecourse, because there were some threats under the previous government about closing the racecourse down. While there have been problems with the track, they’ve largely now been resolved, so we see a very important future at Werribee as a racing centre as well. There will be ongoing regular race meetings there as well.

As Racing Minister, do you have any plans to redevelop Werribee Racing Club? The community doesn’t want it turned into yet another housing estate. Can you guarantee its long-term survival? The Werribee Racing Club certainly has an important role to play in our racing

Truck traffic in the inner west, particularly in Footscray and Yarraville, is a major problem. Labor has promised to put in a West Gate distributor to alleviate this problem. What are the Coalition’s plans to tackle this issue? The budget includes funding for stage two of the east-west link. That will provide a second crossing of the Maribyrnong River, that will provide a direct link from Footscray Road, it will be an elevated road over Footscray Road, through Footscray, Sunshine and directly onto the Western Ring Road. People coming from Melton, Ballarat, Geelong, Wyndham Vale and Werribee will have choices about which way to go into town. They can go on the West Gate, or they can go on the Ring Road a little bit and then come in on the east-west link. Because this will go straight past the top of Swanson Dock, trucks coming out of the port will go straight onto east-west link, and go to either the east or west. Not one of those trucks will go through Yarraville or Seddon or Footscray. This will take thousands of trucks off Whitehall Street, off Moore Street, off Francis Street – this will be the best thing for Yarraville and Seddon and Footscray in 100 years.

4 Wheel Action Rugged motorsport is revving up, writes Myke Bartlett Simon Christie admits he got into the television business just to get cool stuff for free. The producer and presenter of Channel 31’s 4WD  TV – currently celebrating its 400th episode – has long been obsessed with off-road vehicles. Looking for sponsors to counter his “tight-arse” tendencies, he found 4WD companies responded with great enthusiasm to the idea of a TV show. He and his wife set about making it happen, even if they had no idea what they were doing. “We started as a husband-and-wife team who had never held a video camera, let alone a microphone. When we got the go-ahead from the TV station, my wife and I looked at each other and said, ‘Hell, we don’t even own a camera’.” Six months later, having spent $400 on a

handheld camera, the couple won awards for best new producer and most popular program on the community TV network. Since then, shows dedicated to 4WD racing and adventuring have popped up all over the television landscape. All 4 Adventure has proven a hit for Channel 7, while 4WD Action recently made a splash on Foxtel. Christie puts this success down to the star vehicle’s broad appeal. “You’ve got grey nomads who want to travel around Australia, you’ve got young guns full of testosterone who want to see cars rolling over and you’ve got young families,’’ he says. “The opportunity to escape our daily lives and have some adventure is part of the backbone of what made Australia what it is, and the 4WD has become the ideal platform to get us out there.”

4WD TV – one of three 4WD-related shows Christie now produces (the others are Simon Christie’s 4WD Pro Tips and Your 4X4) – now has a million-dollar budget. Catering to its diverse audience, each episode features a mix of travelogue and motorsport stunts, but Christie is keen to stress he’s more interested in education than sheer entertainment. He’s well aware of the bad reputation some 4WD enthusiasts have. “There’s nothing wrong with what we’re doing, but we are in the public eye,” he says. “We’re the caretakers and the custodians of the

bush. We spend a lot longer out there than most people. We’re the true greenies.” This is a viewpoint shared by John Rooth, recently retired host of 4WD Action. Rooth’s Unlock Australia group is dedicated to reopening “locked off” national parks to responsible drivers. However, he admits programs such as his haven’t always encouraged responsibility. “I love flat-out action, but it doesn’t work too well with the Unlock Australia ethos. We want to go out there and have a great time, but not destroy the country in the process.” Christie sees the daredevil action as an essential element of his show, if only because it allows him to speak directly to the drivers who most need education. “The motorsport is there to attract the less desirable components of the 4WD community and, once we’ve got them in, we can then send a clear message of acting responsibly. If we don’t maintain the bush, if we don’t keep it pristine, then tracks get closed and we get shut out. Have you read those advice pieces on creating the perfect password? Include a symbol or two, they say. Maybe a product manager at Kia was trying create a password when he came up with pro_cee’d and somehow it slipped through to the guys in marketing and, hipsters that they are, they decided to go with it. Mistakes have certainly happened in car names before and nothing else explains one this weird. Honda once named a vehicle the Acty Crawler, Mazda had the Bongo Brawny and there was Isuzu’s Mysterious Utility Wizard. My favourite silly name was Subaru’s Touring Bruce. At least you could spell those; what are the people at the traffic office going to do when you try to register a pro_cee’d? The thing is that, apart from its name, the pro_cee’d is actually a terrific car. It has a nicely flexible motor that sounds great as it’s winding up and a six-speed manual that’s light and fast. Get the launch right (the first time or two you’ll probably stall) and it’s quick off the mark and willing, all the way up to wherever you choose to lift off. This is combined with handling that’s surprising for a Korean car. It’s flat and direct through challenging corners with a really pleasing grip, and there’s a feeling of solidity that’s most reassuring, even over broken bitumen. The front wheels turn in nicely and point accurately, the rear ones tuck in and hold, and the body stays flat and rigid. And all the while you know exactly what’s happening.

KIA PRO_CEE’D What is it?

A moderately hot hatch at an extremely hot price.

What’s in it?

A turbocharged 150-kilowatt 1.6-litre with a six-speed manual.

Is it thirsty?

I used 11 litres per 100 kilometres in the city, eight in the country. The official combined figure is 7.4.

Through all of this enthusiasm, the fuel economy stays pretty good. The cabin is well finished, too, with tactile surfaces and a good level of equipment. What will most impress your discerning friends is the LCD speedometer which, with the touch of a button (on the steering wheel), flips from a conventional analogue display to grouped instruments covering turbo boost, torque output and water temperature, along with a digital speedo. Seating is respectable, too, the driver getting an electric lumbar support. It’s easy and fast to get comfy. At least in the front. This is far from the quickest or most powerful hatch around, but it has enough go to make it a heap of fun. Hard to beat at the price.
