When you think about your day-to-day life, have you stopped to think about all the things that are provided by Council? The playgrounds your children play on, the roads you drive on, walking and cycle paths, kindergartens, maternal and child health services, libraries, sporting grounds, garbage and recycling collections, aged and disability services....the list goes on and on.

Fun, charity a perfect fit Melton Primary School pupils are skipping their way to a healthier future and raising funds for an important cause. This year’s Jump Rope for Heart program was launched at the school last Friday, and it continues until September 12. Pupils will take part in physical activity sessions two lunchtimes a week. Co-ordinator Danny Roberts says the program will promote health and fitness at the school. “We know physical health has many benefits for students and adults, including building muscle and strength, building confidence and leadership skills, and helping students learn and stay focused. It also helps them reduce risk of developing health complications in future.” Money raised will go towards the Heart Foundation to help in the fight against heart disease and strokes.
In fact, Melton City Council provides over 120 services and many Council buildings for its residents that make our community a better place to live. Earlier this year, Victorian Opposition Leader, Daniel Andrews, expressed the idea of capping rates for all Councils in Victoria if his party was elected at the November State election. A similar policy in NSW has had very negative impacts on councils but more importantly the residents. This Council does not want to see this happen here. I have many residents tell me that they love living in our community and that Council provides

many services that help them, their children and grandchildren enjoy a better quality of life. If we had to cap rates, it would be highly likely that Council would be forced to stop some of these important services that our residents depend on and abandon future projects earmarked in the capital works program, such as traffic congestion measures along Caroline Springs Boulevard, the potential for an Aquatic Centre or the potential to duplicate Hume Drive. So, while at first glance this policy may seem appealing to ratepayers, it would have long-term negative impacts for our community. My priority as a Councillor isn’t for short-term gain but for a sustainable and liveable community long into the future. I am writing to give you an update on the exciting telecommunication changes that are taking place in and around parts of Kurunjang on the new super-fast National Broadband Network. Later this month, it’s anticipated that more than 2000 residents in and around Kurunjang will begin to have access to super-fast broadband following the expected launch of Telstra services on the National Broadband Network (NBN) in Melton. The highly anticipated arrival of fast broadband is great news for the community and Telstra’s local team will be out in the community helping to demystify the new technology for residents. The NBN can provide the bandwidth needed to get the entire household online, at the same time using a growing range of connected devices like PCs, games consoles, tablets and smartphones. Fast broadband can also give businesses a big boost. It can help provide new opportunities to work and trade more efficiently by handling large volumes of data quickly and supporting technologies like online sales, cloud computing and video collaboration.

Djerriwarrh Health Services, provides health care to Melton, Moorabool and the surrounding communities. Services are offered at Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital, Melton Health, and Community Health centres in Bacchus Marsh, Melton and Caroline Springs. Maternity services at the hospital provide supportive care for healthy women with uncomplicated pregnancies, from the first antenatal visit to support in the first weeks at home. Their approach promotes pregnancy and childbirth as a normal healthy life event. Maternity care is provided to more than 1,200 families every year. Antenatal care is provided at the Maternity@Melton clinics which offer a range of antenatal care models including midwife-led, obstetric and shared care services. Women with pre-existing medical conditions or obstetric issues are referred to Western Hospital Sunshine while antenatal clinics are also at Melton Health. Expecting parents can attend birth preparation classes with evening sessions from 7.30-9.30pm for four sessions and Saturdays 10am to 1pm for one session. t’s always hard to know what to do with the Gordon Legal sponsorship of the club. I’m not really looking for new work and I get to go to the president’s lunch most weeks anyway, sponsorship or not … except for weeks where we start favourite. Vice-president Sue Alberti likes to host those and has an unbeaten record so far. If we happen to make the finals this year and get to the GF, she’ll be president that day! Such thoughts weren’t on my mind when I set out for Simon Garlick’s office during the week and saw a couple of hundred young kids in Bulldog jumpers having an Auskick clinic with some of our players. The kids were really cute and I loved the way our players paid them time and attention and complimented what were, frankly, some pretty indifferent foot skills. These kids are our future members and fan base. That’s when it struck me, I could do a lot worse than use the sponsorship to introduce a few kids to what I hope will become life-long membership of our club. So with membership manager Tom Lister, we cooked up the idea of using the Gordon Legal sponsorship to underwrite membership for all the Auskick kids in the west who nominate the Bulldogs as “their team”. We’re going to give them the gift of membership, invite them to a night to meet our young players and explain to them that the club belongs to the west, just as they do. That sense of belonging to a community, pride in your community’s team, is a gift. Just ask the people of Liverpool. And maybe that’s just the sort of initiative that will make them want to come back year after year. If it works, we’ll get another 1200 members this year and create a whole new base for the future. If you live in the west and barrack for another team, it’s time to ask yourself: “Which community do I really belong to … the one where I live, or somewhere over the other side of town?” And if you’re already a Doggies fan, have a think about who you can conscript. As the great philosopher Doug Hawkins once said: “Better to sign up a single new member than to curse the comparative AFL membership table.”

s a footballer, there will always be moments when your footy career will flash before you. And even though I’m still forging my career, my most recent injury had the sort of pain that made me think I was in trouble. It was my knee, again. How you feel immediately you are injured is often an over-reaction and club medicos and staff soon put your mind at ease. Then follows a series of scans, doctors’ appointments and an anxious wait to confirm the extent of what has happened – and the journey of rehabilitation begins. When you receive the news that you’ll miss some football, it’s a shock at the start. But as you go through the weeks, you come to the realisation that the people you’re working with – physios, fitness staff, gym coaches and others – are all working together to help you recover and offer support to get over the next hurdle. It’s not as dark a place as it may seem. You feel supported, and your extended Bulldogs family is with you every step of the way. There’s always light at the end of the tunnel. All the 7am swimming sessions, boxing and grinder circuits pass. Then the focus returns to the goal of playing the game we all love. You actually find another layer of gratitude that you are playing this great game. It reminds you not take the job for granted. We all love this game and we play it knowing that some form of injury is an inevitable part of the job description. But there’s no place I’d rather be than at the Kennel with my teammates and staff . . . they’re my extended family.
