Victims’ day in court By Natalie Gallenti-Brekalo Victims of crime are being urged to make their voices heard in magistrates courts by delivering impact statements. Police and social workers are encouraging people to utilise CoHealth’s victims assistance and counselling program (VACP) at the Melton station, saying it offers closure and can be a cathartic experience. Acting Inspector Trevor King said providing a statement also gave a magistrate the chance to consider the impact of a crime and allowed victims to have their say.

He said the high number of cases and speedy turnover in the magistrates courts meant too few impact statements were submitted. “We really have to look at the impact on victims,� Acting Inspector King said. “I have no doubt it’s a factor taken into consideration when sentencing. Our role is to put all of the information before the courts.� Acting Inspector King said more impact statements were heard in higher courts because there was more time between the hearing and sentencing. VACP case manager Brendan McCusker said the organisation helped victims

with any problems they might be having, including emotional, physical, mental and financial issues. “We can help a person understand what they’re going through and why by providing information and support.� Case manager Monica Karst said some victims simply needed reassurance, while others were nervous about attending court. “This is the only opportunity that a victim has to have their voice heard,� she said. “It can really make a difference in their lives.� VACP staff are available at Melton police station every Tuesday and Thursday. CFA, police pursue burglars Victoria Police is joining forces with the CFA to investigate a spate of burglaries at fire brigades across the Macedon Ranges. There have been seven known burglaries in the region since March, with a further incident in Hillside believed to be connected. Burglarised CFA properties include Darraweit Guim, Bullengarook, SuttonGrange, Toolern Vale and Langley. The most recent brigade burglary was overnight on July 19, when the Riddells Creek and Bolinda-Monegeetta stations were ransacked. A Toyota HiLux stolen from Riddells Creek was later found burnt-out in Melton. A CFA spokeswoman said it was disappointing when brigades whose purpose was to protect lives and property were intentionally attacked. Police believe the CFA is being targeted because many of the stations are unmanned. Macedon Ranges CIU Sergeant Steve Cole said brigades were a “soft target�, but the consequences of the break-ins were devastating. Five months after the break-in at Darraweit Guim, the brigade is yet to receive new equipment through an insurance claim. Riddells Creek’s Captain Dave Thompson said his brigade was now without vital firefighting equipment, including the stolen HiLux. Good turns in Timor A 16-year-old Caroline Springs resident has just spent nine days doing community service in Timor Leste. Nathan Peeters was one of 15 Catholic Regional College students from the Sydenham campus to paint and landscape the Timor-Leste Scout Activity Centre in the village of Metinaro. Nathan and his fellow students also donated camping equipment to Scouts Timor; they were engaged in cultural activities to learn more about the country and met with the Australian ambassador. Gorton MP Brendan O’Connor last week gave Nathan a Community Achievement Award for his efforts. “It’s an amazing achievement to visit our neighbours to the north and be a part of an activity that helps enrich the lives of others,” he said. Moorabool Shire has called on candidates in this year’s Victorian state election to commit to the shire’s top infrastructure needs. Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell said he was calling on candidates standing in the Buninyong, Melton and Gisborne electorates to back the shire’s top seven priorities. “We’ve discussed these projects with the candidates, but to date they haven’t committed the level of support required to ensure these vital projects happen,” Cr Tatchell said. “Time is running out.” The seven key priority projects are the Western Bypass of Bacchus Marsh (Halletts Way); eastern transport and freight bypass of Bacchus Marsh; Darley early-years hub; Parwan employment zone; sewerage for small towns; Moorabool Indoor Aquatic Centre; and recreation reserves for growing communities. Cr Tatchell said the Western Bypass of Bacchus Marsh/Halletts Way extension was a “no brainer the community desperately needs” with a cost that “is a drop in the ocean for state finances”. The council, developers and state and federal governments have committed funding to the project, but council is asking state election candidates to pledge the additional $1.92 million required. Cr Tatchell said he looked forward to meeting candidates again to discuss their plans.

Victoria’s paramedics are highly skilled professionals who dedicate their lives to serving the community and helping out in tough times. Ambulance Victoria and Victorian Government representatives have been negotiating with the ambulance union over a new pay deal for paramedics since August 2012. To break the deadlock, the Victorian Government has agreed with Ambulance Victoria to make a new pay offer to paramedics.

This new offer is fair and reasonable. It includes: • a sign-on payment of $3000 for full-time paramedics (pro rata for part-timers and new employees) – this is twice as much as the previous offer • an immediate 6% wage increase • an increase of 3% in July 2015 and a further 3% in July 2016 – a 12% increase in total. Paramedics may also receive pay increases arising from the Fair Work Commission’s arbitration of their work value claim. Paramedics existing terms and conditions will be retained, so that they continue to receive: • 10 weeks paid leave annually • 10 weeks paid parental leave • 6 months long service leave after 15 years service • tax exempt benefits of up to $9000 a year. Victorian paramedics will still be the only paramedics in Australia to have access to guaranteed superannuation benefits via a defined benefit superannuation scheme, including a lump-sum option after 30 years of service. These increases will mean an ALS Year 6 paramedic can receive a total package of more than $110,000 a year (including rolled-in-rate, built-in overtime, FBT exempt benefits and guaranteed superannuation benefits – but not additional overtime). In addition, paramedics will receive the $3,000 sign-on payment. The Victorian Government is continuing to invest in ambulance services, with funding provided for an additional 539 full-time equivalent ambulance officers. This new pay offer gives paramedics the salary increase they deserve, maintains the generous terms and conditions they enjoy today and recognises the importance of the job they do protecting and saving lives. Do you know what the wine varieties mamaia, carmine, evmolpia and ederena have in common? They’re actually different names from around the world for the same grape: merlot. Sorry for the trick question but it helps to illustrate just how far and wide merlot is grown and enjoyed. It’s one of the world’s most widely planted grapes – from the Ukraine to Uruguay, and Israel to France, where it’s the country’s single-most planted grape. It’s believed merlot gets its name from the blackbirds that are so fond of its ripe grapes in south-west France. These birds are known as merlau in the ancient Occitan language. More often than not, this fleshy, easy drinking red is blended with cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc, rather than made into single varietal wine. Its juicy plum, blackberry and herbal flavours help give the cabernets a sweet mid-palate (think of it as the jam in the middle of a doughnut on your tongue) and soften the austerity of cabernet’s firm tannins. There’s a lot of merlot planted in Australia – it’s third behind shiraz and cabernet sauvignon – and it is used widely as a blender. Indeed, I reckon the ratio of cabernet-merlot bottles to straight merlot I open would be about five to one. The best merlot examples are considered to be from the right bank of Bordeaux’s Gironde River. In the past decade or so, it has played a larger role in the blends of Bordeaux’s left bank as producers seek to create softer, earlier

drinking wines. While it’s become more important in Bordeaux, the opposite could be said for the grape in California. The decline has a lot to do with the 2004 film Sideways and its lead character Miles Raymond, who uttered: “If anyone orders merlot I’m leaving. I’m not drinking any effing merlot.” California winemaker Randy Ullom says the comments were justified. “People started planting it everywhere,” says Ullom, who has made wines for Kendall-Jackson in California for more than 20 years. “When it took off, merlot was planted on the north and south coast and people said, ‘Oh my God, we’ve got to get on this bandwagon,’ so they started planting it everywhere. You’d get a herbaceousness from the central valleys [that had a detrimental effect on the wines]. “At the beginning, if you were to put all California’s merlot grapes together to make a single wine out of it, it would have been pretty good. Soon after [if you did the same thing] it would have been good, then so-so, then bad, then to, ‘Oh my God, we’ve bastardised the whole thing’.” But Ullom says there have been long-term benefits and merlot again stands tall next to California’s best-known grapes; pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon and zinfandel. “All the low-quality vineyards were ripped out because nobody wanted them. It was a natural selection thing, where only the fittest and best have survived,” he says. “But merlot’s coming back now. If you put everybody’s merlot into a big pot now and made a wine, you’d have a pretty nice wine.”

he Bulldogs have a special place in my heart. The club is full of history and great people, past and present. It is a club that continues to strive for excellence and the prize of being known as the best AFL team in the land – and is looking to place a second Premiership Cup at our spiritual home, Whitten Oval. How has our club survived for so long on the back of one premiership in the past 89 years? From personal experience, the moment I walked into the club as a fresh-faced, skinny kid from the bush I noticed it had something very special. It was people. Ordinary people doing extraordinary things. They had an extraordinary will to never give up, not for anything or anyone. They had red, white and blue running through their veins. I was able to see it on my first day at the club. War had been declared – war against the AFL. The Bulldog faithful had been told that their team did not have a place in the new world of an expanding national competition. The Bulldogs were dead. But the AFL didn’t count on the strength and courage of Bulldog people. The rest is history. One group that played a big part in the fight was our cheer squad, a crew full of heart and spirit. Against Essendon I sat with our Red, White and Blue Army with my family. It was the most exhilarating day we have had at the footy! Barracking and cheering for the boys as they played their hearts out. The kids loved it. I loved it. It won’t be the last time we sit with the Bulldog cheer squad – my kids will see to that. Reflecting on my cheer squad experience crystallised what I already knew – we have survived for 89 years because of the Bulldog people.

he western suburbs were once a blank spot on the map for me. I was completely lost as I took my first drive down the Western Ring Road, but I was glad to find my destination. This story is about an amazing lady living a 30-minute drive down the Westgate Freeway. Her name is Robyn. She seems a normal patron of the western suburbs but has been an extraordinary influence on me and a select few others. Not long after one of the happiest days of my life – having my name called out in the 2012 AFL national draft – I was fortunate to be accepted into Robyn’s home after making the long trip down from the country. She opened her house to me, giving me a bed to stay in and a home while beginning my journey in the AFL. Not too long after joining the club, pre-season training got the better of me. I was tiring fast. But Robyn saw me right. She is a hard worker, but as soon as she got home from work, dinner was under way. I was no real help, with limited cooking skills and next to no energy. One of Robyn’s close relatives had a major health scare while I was living in her house. She had sleepless nights and long days but never revealed this to me at the time. She would go straight to the hospital from work but always came home with a smile. Her strength astounded me. That wasn’t her only attribute. The day I had moved in, I was a young 18-year-old making the transition from high school and oblivious to the real world. With Robyn’s guidance I was shown what it was like to be a good person in this world. Robyn is a great person and a role model.
