Shire goes on show
Moorabool’s tourism assets were showcased to visitor information centre co-ordinators from across the state last week as part of the Victoria Tourism Industry Council’s annual summit. Participants sampled a range of attractions and cafes in Moorabool shire, with stops made at Lal Lal Falls, Kryal Castle, St Anne’s Winery, Mill Cottage Café and Werribee Gorge.

Councils unite on emergencies
Moorabool council is one of five central Victorian councils that will use a $50,000 grant from the federal government to develop a regional approach to helping communities recover from natural disasters. Moorabool, Macedon Ranges, Mitchell, Mount Alexander and Hepburn shires will use the funds to develop shared emergency relief and recovery guidelines and training for staff across the municipalities. The project is due to start in September and will take a year to complete.

Ballan dream takes root By Yasemin Talat

Bacchus Marsh and Melton are gaining the benefits of a dedicated breast cancer nurse, thanks to funding from the McGrath Foundation. Sue Bartlett, (picturd) who is based at Bacchus Marsh Community Health Centre, provides support to people affected by breast cancer and offers physical, psychological and emotional support from diagnosis to treatment and beyond. “With many years’ experience, I’m aware of the impact a diagnosis of breast cancer can have on both the person affected and their family, not only physically but emotionally,” she said. “Some know they’ll never be cured and have to live with chronic illness.” Breast cancer is Australia’s thirdmost-common cancer, with about 15,000 women diagnosed every year. A vision for a Ballan-wide arboretum may soon become a reality with the help of generous donations and community support. Earlier this year, a group of Ballan residents launched their novel vision for Ballan to become an arboretum by committing to the importance and beauty of Ballan’s trees. Ballan Arboretum group member Stephanie Day said the vision of the plan’s supporters had since sparked interest from many other groups and locals, with donations for tree-planting projects rolling in and new projects under way. Ms Day, who has a background in horticulture, said trees were incredibly important for the community. “This project of ours is about infrastructure … because a tree is about the infrastructure,” she said. “We have to leave a legacy in 25 years’ time for the next generation of people who live in Ballan. “That’s our idea, that we’re planning for the future, not just for now.” While traditional arboretums are normally contained within botanic gardens, the group feels the notion could be grown to support a new and creative concept for Ballan. A Moorabool-based academic, Michael Howard, has jumped on board with his RMIT landscape architecture students, who will work on designs for tree planting in Ballan in addition to their academic studies. The students, who visited Ballan last week, will familiarise themselves with the town, research arboretums and investigate how an arboretum could be extended to encompass the entire town. The Ballan Quilt and Craft Group also appreciated the vision and has donated $5000 to the cause.

Nursing mums link up By Yasemin Talat With the launch of a new social media group, mothers in Moorabool have a new place to connect and find information about breastfeeding. Moorabool for Mothers Inc has launched a new Facebook page – the Breastfeeding in Moorabool Group – to provide a place for the community to share, discuss the subject of breastfeeding and raise awareness of its importance. Website editor Nichole Russell hopes more people will join the page and add to the conversations. “It’s quick and easy for people to get onto Facebook and find out what’s available and to be able to share their stories,” she said. Ms Russell said the launch of the group page was important for Moorabool because the breastfeeding rate in the shire was lower than the state average. “The idea is that breastfeeding is a natural thing to do,” she said. “But it’s also something that doesn’t come naturally to everybody. It’s often a learned experience and if people don’t have friends and family to support them or share their experiences they need to look elsewhere because it’s beneficial for mothers and babies.” The group is open to anyone, from mothers, family members and friends who are supporting a breastfeeding mother, to health professionals who want to find out information or share information with the group. Briefs Burglars strike twice
Two Hillside properties close to each other were robbed late last month. Burglars broke into a building site overnight on Friday, July 25, and the next day jemmied the door of a portable office to steal a laser level. The other incident was at an IGA supermarket, where would-be robbers smashed a window about 5am and forced open a metal roller door. Nothing was stolen, but three men in hooded jumpers and gloves were recorded on CCTV.

Number plates were stolen from three cars outside the Hogs Breath Café at Woodgrove shopping centre overnight on July 28.
Tools still a target
Tray utilities with metal toolboxes continue to be a target for the theft of tools, with another two offences committed in Brookfield in late July. Most offences occur in late evening or early morning.
Knife bandit grabs cash
A man carrying a brown-handled knife threatened the owner of the Watervale Lotto News and Gift store in Taylors Hill on July 24 and demanded money. He fled after being given a small amount of cash. Police say the offender was about 183cm tall and unshaven. He wore a blue, red and grey hooded jacket, blue jeans and white runners. Many of our residents are struggling with the loss of the van den Hende family, beloved members of the Eynesbury community. It was heart warming to see so many people come together at the recent memorial, supporting each other in their grief, and paying respect to a family that had such a profound impact on their neighbours, school friends and team mates. They will be missed by those who knew them, and our thoughts are with their family and friends, both locally and abroad. A National Day of Mourning has been declared for Thursday ��������������������������������������������������������������� tragedy, with a memorial service to take place in Melbourne. To help manage exceptional levels of population growth, Melton City Council is proposing to establish 11 new suburbs across the municipality. In planning for this growth, most existing suburbs will remain unaffected, but some suburbs will have their boundaries moved and name changed. Residents who are directly affected will receive a letter from Council and information brochures will be widely available. Together with a committee, made up of local residents, representatives of indigenous, history and business groups and Councillors, we have developed a shortlist of suburb names and over the next month or so, Council is asking residents to vote for their favourite names. A famine of Facebook Students and staff at Bacchus Marsh College are preparing to do without important aspects of their lives as part of this year’s 40 Hour Famine. Food and Facebook are among the many things students will give up for 40 hours on the weekend of August 15-17 to help fight poverty. Students and staff who take up the challenge will put poverty in the spotlight by raising awareness and funds to help World Vision’s work in communities around the world. Student programs co-ordinator Sonia Reid said students liked to challenge themselves by choosing to give up technology, often choosing not to use their phones or social media. This is the third year the school will take part in the event and it’s aiming to raise $5000 for the cause. Following World Vision’s Global Leader
Conventions, which were hosted in each state, Ms Reid and student leaders are encouraging students and teachers to sign up for the famine or sponsor someone who has. “Our job is to encourage as many people to join the 40 Hour Famine as we can,” Ms Reid said. “The kids have made posters and published articles in the newsletter, and teachers and students have spoken at assemblies.” The focus country of the 40 Hour Famine this year is Rwanda. There’s life after football
eter’s to-do list for this week. 1. Lots of talk this week about amending the rules so Freo’s Nat Fyfe can be eligible for this year’s Brownlow Medal despite suspension. Fair enough, but first things first. Time to right an historic wrong and award Chris Grant the Brownlow everyone knows he won. His entitlement was stripped by a flawed tribunal decision initiated by a flawed tribunal process later amended by the AFL to bring its judicial system into line with modern legal standards. There’s been no fairer and better player in the game than Grant and it’s time the competition recognised it properly. Letter to Mike Fitzpatrick and to Gill … let’s make this right. 2. Had a chuckle with Simon Garlick in Launceston (or was it just our teeth chattering?) at the latest rumour (courtesy of Wayne Carey) that we’d offered GWS’s Jonathon Patton $5 million for five years to come to the Bulldogs. It isn’t true and Simon denied it on SEN. But then I thought: “It’s not as if we aren’t and won’t be, active in this trade period. What if someone stumbles on the right mail about a trade discussion?” Memo to Simon, Graham and Jason: “From now on, our position on any rumoured trade is, ‘We don’t discuss trades unless they are done’.” It does no good and prevents our fans from one of the true joys of fandom – speculating about what the club might be about to do! 3. I know it wasn’t our finest game but going by the stats posted on the Launceston electronic scoreboard during the breaks, you’d think we never got a kick and never scored a point. They put up only the Hawthorn stats as some breathlessly parochial announcer lauded the local team. Memo to (ground manager) “Captain” Robert Groenewegon: “This is your president speaking. Hope you enjoyed your three-course lunch. It’ll be the last involving a Western Bulldogs game in Launceston if that keeps up!”
ne of the hardest things about AFL football is the end-of-season restructure of the playing list, and how some of your closest friends may not be there the following year. I remember, after my first year, five of my close friends and I headed into the club for our exit interviews. Just hours later, three of those guys were no longer AFL players. It was really confronting, but I guess that’s the nature of the beast. I do my best to stay in contact with my close friends who are no longer at the club, and it’s really good to see a lot of them doing well for themselves. Most recently, James Mulligan, who has always had a passion for fitness, completed his personal training qualification. He’s opened up his own gym and it’s going really well. Jamieson Daniels has done the same thing and has a lot of clients at his Shepparton gym – another one of my mates building a life after football. Matthew Panos, who I lived with for two years, is back in Adelaide with his family. He’s been playing some really good football with Norwood in the SANFL. And Malcolm Lynch, who I see a fair bit through his travels, left at the end of my second year and is doing some really good things with the Australian Indigenous Mentoring program. The biggest thing for guys that leave the footy club – if they are not lucky enough to get another chance elsewhere – is that they’re going on and having good careers outside of football. I’ve heard of a lot of people who go through a massive transition period. But I’m glad to know that the guys I’m close to have done well in their footy afterlife.
