Emergencies project funded Melton council has welcomed a state government funding announcement that will help develop a multi-stage community “resilience” program. The Victorian government is providing $91,700 to Melton and Wyndham councils to develop a program aimed at building the emergency capabilities of community leaders, faith-based groups, seniors groups, service clubs and culturally and linguistically diverse communities. Western Metropolitan Region MP Andrew Elsbury said the $243,700 Western Areas Resilience project would include leadership training, community forums, developing emergency planning ‘toolkits’ and producing a training package to help mentors. Melton council operations manager Greg Wood said the project would address a gap in the community. “The funding will be used for a project officer to work across both [Melton-Wyndham] communities with the objective to build community resilience to emergency situations,” he said. “This has been identified as a gap in both our councils’ emergency planning arrangements. “With this funding, the community will gain greater understanding of the roles they and all levels of government play in planning, preparation, response and recovery through a localised approach to and from the community.”

Students from Kurunjang Secondary School will be well and truly ready for university thanks to an innovative educational model being implemented at the school. The AVID program – Advancement via Individual Determination – is aimed at offering support to students, particularly those in the academic ‘middle’ so they can apply to university and achieve their full potential. Teacher David Gorton said the program, an elective in the younger year levels, taught students a variety of techniques to make it easier to enter a university course after high school. Mr Gorton said students of all capabilities had benefited from the program since it was launched last year and the schoool now had three AVID classes. “By teaching students the skills and behaviours for success, while providing intensive support and developing a sense of hope, social mobility is a real and achievable aim for many of the students in the community,” he said. “Many students explain that they want to be the first member of their family to attend university.” Nicole Tomilloso, 14, who has been in the program for two years, told Star Weekly it had helped learning become more natural for her. “I’m really organised now and I think it’s made me become a better learner,” she said. Kristen Twite, 13, said she entered the program to improve her marks and learn how to better organise her time so that she could hand projects in on time. Other AVID students Alesha Laurie, 13, and Trent Fletcher-Gass, 14, said the course had improved their communication skills and they now loved learning.

Smoke alarm warning

The CFA is urging residents to ensure they have working smoke alarms installed after attending five house fires across the state last Tuesday night. The call-outs included a blaze in Bacchus Marsh, which started in a chimney. Duty officer Rohan Luke said the CFA had attended 84 fires around the state in the past two weeks. He said the best way to survive a house fire was to be alerted at the earliest opportunity by a working smoke alarm.

Don’t hide our hydrants Bacchus Marsh fire brigade and Western Water are calling on residents to “adopt a hydrant” to help keep the community safer. CFA volunteers are hitting the streets this month to prepare fire hydrants in case of emergency. Public rallies to give Cailin hope

By Natalie Gallenti A tiny Maddingley girl has the chance of a better life, thanks to the generosity of the tight-knit Bacchus Marsh community. Little Cailin was recently diagnosed with global developmental delay and suspected cerebral palsy. Then last week, her distressed parents, Jade Addicott and Marc Robinson, were told she would require ankle-foot orthosis (AFO). AFOs are custom-made devices that support and control movements of the lower limbs. Ms Addicott told Star Weekly her orthotist and physiotherapist had suggested the family apply for funding, which would be at least a three-month process, or pay for the AFOs privately at a cost of $1000. After receiving hand-made children’s toys and clothes to sell at a local market to use the proceeds for the AFOs, Ms Addicott posted a question on the Bacchus Marsh Residents Facebook page on the cost of holding a stall at the Darley Market. She was surprised by the response from readers. “The response was overwhelming,” she said. “About 10 people offered to donate more items for me to sell. Some people offered to have a fund-raising event and others suggested I look at a website called Go Fund Me, where people can donate money.” By Tuesday night the first-time mum had set up a Go Fund Me page and within hours had raised $1200, with Marsh Tech Electrical Services donating $500. “This is not what I had expected at all,” Ms Addicott said. “I thought we might get a few small donations of $5 or $10, which we could put towards her AFOs.

“It just goes to show there are some extremely generous people in the community. I even had a local cleaning business offer to clean my house so I can spend that time with my daughter.” The generosity comes in the wake of months of worry for the family, who first noticed the 20-month-old was developing slowly compared to other children at her playgroup. After countless blood tests, scans and visits to paediatricians for Cailin, her parents received the grim diagnosis. Now they have some hope that their precious girl will get the life she deserves.

“It’s frustrating for everyone, so difficult and draining, especially for Cailin,” Ms Addicott said. “We have no idea what to expect in the future. Will she walk or will she need a wheelchair? Will she talk? “Everyone just wants the best for their child and for them to reach their full potential, but I don’t even know what her full potential is.” Ms Addicott said Cailin would get her AFOs as soon as this week and it would make a huge difference to her life. “I don’t want to get my hopes up, but this will give her the best possible chance of learning to walk,” she said. As for the generosity of the community, Ms Addicott continues to be overwhelmed. “I’m still in shock,” she said. “Every time money came through I cried. I really didn’t expect it. I’m so grateful.”

Away from it all, close to home The Langham is a great escape, writes Charlene Macaulay The Langham Melbourne is the perfect antidote for any Melburnian needing a quick break. But it’s the small touches – from the luxury Chuan Spa amenity products in the bathroom and the copy of Alice in Wonderland in the bedside table drawer to the bottle of water placed in your car at checkout – that impress. The marble bathroom is comfortably set out and includes a separate shower and deep bathtub. If you’re celebrating a birthday or anniversary, be sure to let them know when you book and you will be rewarded with a slice of chocolate cake on arrival and a handwritten note congratulating you on your milestone. When dining at Melba, make sure you come with an appetite. The buffet offers a wide range of food stations with an international cuisine and serves up fresh seafood, cooked-to-order pasta, specially-made naan bread, a delicious array of dumplings, and desserts to die for.

My personal favourites included sushi made to order, naan bread with M&Ms, Peking duck pancakes and churros with a chocolate dipping sauce. To drink, try the apple crumbletini. Back in the room, the bed lives up to its reputation: you just sink into the soft mattress and pillows and drift off into a peaceful night’s sleep. The Langham Melbourne is also home to a swimming pool, fitness centre, and the Aria Bar and Lounge, which is renowned for its Tiffin High Tea.

Cyclists can’t escape calls now Bret is a mate of mine who had his car written off by a bicycle. It was coming down a long hill and its rider didn’t know rim brakes don’t work in the wet. The bike rocketed through a stop sign and onto the intersection at full tilt and hit Bret’s little Renault at the front passenger’s door, flipping its rider over to land on his back on the car’s roof. It cushioned his fall nicely and landed him upright and on his feet on the other side of the car. He wasn’t even scratched. Meanwhile the Renault had a redesigned fender and door, and the roof was caved in. It was eight years old and the insurance company figured it wasn’t worth saving. Of course, Bret emerged as the bad guy of the encounter for no other reason than that he was in a car. Needless to say he has a view on cyclists. I’ve explained to him that cyclists always win the PR war because they wind up maimed and bleeding while pursuing their innocent, healthy lifestyles while selfish, crazed motorists who can’t be delayed a single second maliciously run them down and disappear over the horizon laughing fiendishly. Motorists are all the same. Now I have to tell him there are bicycle computers that make and receive rider’s telephone calls and texts, meaning the cyclists’ moral high ground will extend even further onto the road space as riders do all that neat, diverting phone stuff while riding. Magellan has announced a software update for its Cyclo 500 computers providing on-screen

call and text message alerts from smartphones, and wireless control of the music stored on them. “We are always looking for new ways to improve the cycling life of Australians and these cool one-of-kind features do just that,” said Paris Basson, a brand manager at Magellan. The phone features work with Apples and Androids via Bluetooth 4.0. They alert the cyclist to incoming calls and display text messages on the screen mounted on the handlebars. There is caller-ID and calls can be routed through a Bluetooth headset. Cyclists can also play, stop and pause music from their smartphones and receive turn-by-turn instructions from the phone’s navigation software. It’s encouraging to note the Magellan software also includes an emergency feature that sends a text message to cyclists’ nominated contacts advising of their exact location, providing an address and latitude and longitude (always handy). This means that, when cyclists encounter difficulties as a result of interacting with the phone rather than their fellow road users, someone can come by and rescue them. But this works only with Androids; Apple users must sort through about four billion apps to find something similar. The new features are available as a free software update for existing owners of Cyclo 500 computers, while new Cyclos carrying the software are available from $379 to $479.

n my first stint as president back in the ’90s, my approach to umpires and opposition players during the course of a game was utterly shameful. There was no term of abuse I was not prepared to give voice to, and I never judged a free kick to have been awarded fairly against my team. After I was relieved of the post in 1997, the following years enabled me to assume a zen-like calm during games. When the board of the Western Bulldogs asked me to take the job on again in late 2012, I secretly thought people would see a calm and composed Peter Gordon – even during the tensest of games. This is an approach you need to adopt when you’re meant to be hosting pollies and sponsors and people who may not take kindly to the unhinged venting of spleen. Macca has this year introduced a team mantra of “stronger for longer”. Taking his lead, I have introduced my own personal game-day promise of “calmer like an embalmer”. It’s worked tolerably well, with some very clear learnings to be taken out of the 2014 season, including: 1. Any free kick awarded to Nick Riewoldt, no matter how obvious, will elicit dark memories of 2009. 2. Never watch a game in a corporate box with only Simon Garlick for company. Who even thought he was capable of language like that!? 3. Resist the temptation to believe there is a special interpretation given to deliberate out-of-bounds for Western Bulldogs players, COMPARED WITH EVERY OTHER TEAM IN THE FRICKIN’ LEAGUE. 4. Sorry about that last line … stronger for longer … calmer like an embalmer. 5. Put Steve Winwood’s Arc Of A Diver album on the Christmas lists for yesterday’s field umpires and a certain Kangaroos forward.

f you had told me at the start of the year that I’d be playing twos for most of 2014, I would have been a very disappointed young man. Footscray was tipped to come dead last, and I was definitely one who thought we would struggle to win in our first year. A new team with a group of blokes who would rather be playing senior footy combining with part-time VFL footballers doesn’t sound like an environment that would evoke too much care and passion. How wrong I was. Historically, all AFL-owned VFL sides have finished near the bottom in their maiden years. Yet what has occurred in the Footscray Football Club in the past 20 weeks has been remarkable. It is something I have been searching for as a player and person. Contrary to all predictions, the sons of the west are sitting second on the ladder and on the verge of playing finals. The camaraderie formed in such a short time is something I’ve never before experienced – and a lot of that is due to the VFL boys. We’re really looking forward to the next five weeks and the finals. Hopefully, we can bring some silverware to the club. This year has exceeded all my expectations and rekindled my love of the game.
