The Poetry Slam is part of Council’s Arts and Culture Imagine Melton Cultural Encounters Program, and was an opportunity for emerging and established poets to perform performance poetry covering topics and themes that are edgy, poignant, and humorous. Eight poets from the City of Melton and surrounds competed for the winning prize. It was great to see the breadth of talent from competitors who ranged in age from 17 -77! The performers, largely made up of emerging or full time performance poets, were critiqued by a panel of three judges including poet and author from the ���������� �������� ���������� ������� ������� �������� ������ ���������� ����� ���������� ������� ��������� ���� �������� �� ������ ����� ��� ������������� ���� �������� ������ Briela G from Hillside as well as runners up Christine ��������������������������������������������������� Merry from Melton West, in 3rd place. Dear Everyone, Looking back, maybe our fast and winning finish to season 2013 gave us a sense of optimism and inevitability for a further ladder climb in 2014. Maybe the competition got better. Maybe 2014 showed the growing pains that are unavoidable and unpredictable for a young side on the move. But no explanation provides much comfort as we assume our all-too-familiar position at the top of the bottom quartile of the AFL ladder for season 2014. There’s been so much hard work by so many good people that it hurts to sit here this morning and write reflections on another season that was just not good enough. So while I wish the players well on their Mad Monday, truth is, it’s a mad Monday for me, too … a different kind of mad. This morning, we begin a review of football operations that will be characterised by brutal honesty. No one comes in to footy seeking out mediocrity. I know I didn’t resume the position of president at the Western Bulldogs prepared to accept year after year of unfulfilled promise. This year was not good enough. I will get better and work harder for our club. That’s my promise to you. It’s also my expectation of each and every one of you. Thanks to all our members and fans who helped us out this year. Thanks to everyone who made it such a huge and successful day for the return of blockbuster footy at the Whitten Oval on Sunday. Good luck to our young Footscray side in the next month as it battles for VFL honours. And thanks to the people of Star Weekly for the opportunity I have had this year to write for our many western region fans.

t’s funny how quickly life goes. The six years since I got to the Western Bulldogs have whizzed by at the speed of light. I still remember my little brother as a 12-year-old kid, a little smart arse who was just a child. I haven’t lived with him for six years but every day I see him now he reminds me of myself. He has the same mannerisms and everyone comments on how similar we look. Mum and dad have obviously produced two very similar children. He’s 17 now and he’s a young man. It’s funny when you suddenly realise he is no longer the little kid you remember. What impresses me most is that he has become a man in his own right but at the same time is very much another Cordy and is very similar to the rest of the family. He’s dealing with a lot of pressure right now, year 12 exams and the pressure of potentially being drafted, and it brings back a lot of memories. He’s handling it really well, he’s still enjoying life and still smiling and I’m very proud of him. Whatever the next step of his journey, if he gets drafted or not, I would love to take him under my wing and look after him. He’s his own person though and he’ll find his way on his own path. The last thing he wants is to be seen as my little brother or my dad’s son, I think that’s the best part about him. He’s very family-oriented and unselfish and whether he ends up in the AFL or not, he will still make our family very proud.
