Safe hands at wheel A passion for cars and working with young people inspired Gary King to volunteer for Melton and Moorabool’s L2P driver mentoring program. For the past two years, the Kurunjang resident has helped teach young drivers safe driving skills and prepare them for their licence test. “I like working with younger people, it sort of keeps me young, too,” Mr King, 73, said. Mr King joined the Djerriwarrh Community and Education Services program, wanting to lend a helping hand in the community. Award a walk in the park Melton council employee Leanne Christie has been named a national winner at the Heart Foundation’s 2014 Golden Shoe awards. Ms Christie, a local co-ordinator for Heart Foundation Walking, has been recognised for her efforts in supporting and motivating 15 walking groups throughout Melton and organising community events. “It’s a great honour to be singled out for this award,” she said. “It’s always pleasing to know the people you work with appreciate the time and effort you put into the program.” She was nominated for the award by volunteer walk leaders, who, she said, helped make the walking groups so successful. “The groups are important in giving people the chance to get out and walk on a regular basis, but they’re also a good point of social contact,” Ms Christie said. “New residents to the area join the groups as a way of meeting people. Great friendships have been forged from them.” Heart Foundation Walking is Australia’s biggest free walking network with more than 20,000 participants. The Golden Shoe awards – in categories of local co-ordinator, walk organiser, and walker – recognise the valuable contribution made by individuals as part of the Heart Foundation Walking program. Council moves on stud zoning

Bacchus Marsh is one step closer to a controversial rezoning of the Underbank Stud Farm. A “special council meeting” was held last week to discuss Underbank Rezoning Proposal amendments, which council adopted. An application to redevelop the land and turn it into a residential precinct was first submitted by Kataland in October, 2011. Kataland project manager Tom Grantham said his team was happy with the outcome of the meeting. “We feel quite positive.” Five meetings had previously been held in relation to the proposed development of the site. The council and locals had concerns about potential traffic problems, with four connections proposed via Randwick Avenue, Underbank Boulevard, Mortons Road and the extension of Halletts Way. The council report notes the extension of Hallets Way is vital. Mr Grantham said Kataland would continue to listen to the concerns and opinions of the community. The council will submit the rezoning amendment to the Planning Minister for approval. If approved, Kataland will prepare a development plan, which must be endorsed by the council, and then apply for a planning permit. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Now mums Sammi Dobinson and Claire Cornfield are putting their own twist on that saying with their new website, Mamma Knows West, which uncovers all the best family-friendly parks, events, markets, shops and cafes in the western suburbs. Ms Dobinson, of South Kingsville, and Ms Cornfield, of Seddon, spent a year researching

and writing about different locations for the website, which launched in April and is now attracting about 5000 visitors a month. Mamma Knows West’s Facebook page has just passed 2500 ‘likes’. “It’s about uncovering things you didn’t know were there, especially as a parent,” Ms Dobinson said. “There are so many amazing things in the west and we want to encourage people to get out and about.”
The pair say Buckingham Reserve in Sunshine, Werribee Open Range Zoo, Newport Lake and McNish Reserve in Yarraville are among the west’s best attractions. Ms Cornfield says the website was created to encourage parents to break out of their routines and visit different parts of the western suburbs. “It’s amazing what a difference a different park can make,” Ms Cornfield said. “Places like The Strand in Williamstown have the beach, parks, cafes. That’s a whole morning out.”
After living in Caroline Springs “since it was nothing but paddocks”, Goran Kesic, the Liberal candidate for Kororoit in the November state election, believes he’s just the man for the job. “I feel passionately about working with the local community … [it] needs certainty and a government with a real plan for the future,” the 46-year-old said. The linguist and interpreter said that since arriving in 1998 after the Yugoslav wars, he’d come to believe Australia truly was the land of opportunity. Mr Kesic has previously worked for the United Nations and the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe. He said a bridge over Westwood Drive to connect to Calder Park Drive in Taylors Lakes was a priority. Kororoit has been held by Labor MP Marlene Kairouz since 2008. Mr Kesic will run against Ms Kairouz and Voice For The West candidate Shashi Turner.

After dedicating six decades of his life to his trade, Frank the barber has packed up his scissors and closed the door to his shop for the last time. As one of Melton’s first barbers, Frank Palermo has probably cut the hair of most men in town. Last week his loyal customers, some of whom have been visiting for up to 40 years, lined up to have their hair cut by the 73-year-old barber “one last time”. Frank started his apprenticeship in his home town of Calabria, Italy, in 1954. Two years later, he came to Melbourne, working as a barber for 13 years in Coburg before calling Melton South home. “I always loved to deal with hair,” Frank said as he worked on one of his last customers. “I’ve been doing this all my life.” But it wasn’t just hair that kept him busy all these years; it was also bikes. Frank found time to work in his bike store, right beside his Exford Street barber shop, repairing bikes for the neighborhood kids. “It doesn’t matter how good a barber you are, you always get one or two hours doing nothing,” he said. “I had to make it work … and I needed something to keep me moving.” Hair became a family affair for the Palermos, with Frank’s wife Maria and two daughters also taking up the trade and working alongside him for several years. The father of five says he happily shares his passion and his experience with his daughters, giving them tips and advice “all the time”. Saying goodbye isn’t going to be easy for Frank, who says he will miss days spent chatting

about the Bombers, Collingwood, Italy, travel, his family, his kids and his younger days. “I didn’t want to give it up,” he said. “I feel very emotional, but what can you do? My health isn’t 100 per cent; my hands shake a little bit.”

Frank’s priority now is an operation on a carpal tunnel-stressed hand. And after a full recovery he hopes to visit Canada and Italy to see his family and catch up with the barber who taught him his much-loved trade.

Darley pair shine in B&F count By Liam Twomey Dynamic Darley duo Steven Kennedy and Jake Edwards cemented their places among the elite talent of the Ballarat Football League with top-three places in the B&F awards last week. Kennedy was equal second with 15 votes, while Edwards took a share of third spot with 13. Winner of the Premix King Henderson Medal was Ballarat’s Shane Hutchinson, who polled 21 votes. Second place capped off a brilliant year for utility Kennedy, who booted 27 goals and was named among the Devils’ best players seven times. Darley football manager Travis Edwards said Kennedy’s preparation was a major reason for his success. “He’s very professional in the way he goes about his footy,” Edwards said. “He does extra outside his normal training requirements. It’s a lesson to a lot of our young players about how he goes about his footy. “He’s ultra-consistent, and [the vote] is a really good reflection of his year. “To have someone like that as an example to our younger players is paramount because good culture comes from good leadership.” After starting the season on the backline, Jake Edwards showed his versatility. He also played in the midfield and up forward for the Devils and finished with 43 goals. “Jake can play anywhere. That’s the beauty of him,” Edwards said. “Ideally, he goes through the midfield and then goes forward for us. Versatility is one of his great strengths. He has really got it all.” Kennedy and Edwards were both named in the 22-man BFL team of the year. They were joined by teammates Rhys Ellis on the half-forward line and Shane Page on the half-back line.
