Update for Atherstone park

Works on Bridge Road Reserve in Atherstone are set to start soon, with the state government having awarded Melton council $650,000 in funding. Last week, Sport and Recreation Minister Damian Drum announced the funding to go towards a new pavilion and synthetic hockey field at the reserve. Melton mayor Bob Turner said the reserve was an important piece of infrastructure that would help accommodate the area’s growth spurt. The council and Lend Lease have committed $3.355 million to the project in the 2014-15 financial year.

Have a ball in new park Kurunjang residents have a new park to enjoy, with work on Archer Drive Reserve completed earlier this month – in time for the warmer months. Melton mayor Bob Turner said the council was proud to create places the community could enjoy. “I hope residents embrace this wonderful new space and use it to its full capacity, now and well into the future,” he said. The park has a multi-purpose basketball and netball court, barbecue and picnic

seating, shelter with seating, and a drinking fountain. The council invested $500,000 from its 2013-14 budget to develop the new reserve . Cr Turner said the council was committed to promoting community health and well-being. Ravenhall prison is to become the biggest provider of mental health services for prisoners in Australia. About 1000 new medium-security beds will be built at Ravenhall, with 75 of them to be dedicated to mental health prisoners, Corrections Minister Edward O’Donohue has announced.

The forgotten west … at least that’s how Voice for the West candidate for Melton, Monika Thomas, dubs Melbourne’s fast-growing western suburbs. “Melton council records growth in the west at a massive 4.3 per cent every year, but the infrastructure isn’t keeping up with the people moving in,” Ms Thomas said. “The west is forgotten about. We’re growing like wildfire, but there aren’t enough schools; roads aren’t up to scratch; trains aren’t up to scratch; we need another hospital – and that’s just to name a few.” Ms Thomas is hoping to bring a change to the west and make its services comparable to those of the eastern and south-eastern suburbs where she grew up. She said the eastern and south-eastern suburbs were well looked after. “But no one is saying about what’s going to be done in the west.” The mother-of-three says she will be rallying for hospitals, schools and roads if elected in November. “We need to make a change,” Ms Thomas said. “We want to give the community its say in Parliament and say, ‘We’re just as worthy as the other side of town and we should also be looked after’.” Ms Thomas volunteers as a teacher’s aide at her son’s school but says she is struggling to find a job, blaming it on outsourcing. “They say work for the dole, but where are the jobs? Melton men are getting together for a cuppa, a chat and a chuckle. Men over 55 meet on the first Tuesday of each month at the Melton Probus Club, where they’re welcomed by the group president Graham Carter and entertained by guest speakers. Mr Carter, who has been president for a year and a member since 2008, says he continues to be amazed at the things he learns about other members of the group. “You don’t realise what other people are capable of, or have done,” he said. About 30 men attend the meetings, enjoying the company and the opportunity out of their homes or retirement villages. Laurie Hoban, from Melton, looks forward to participating each month. “It’s a very friendly group,” he said. “Joining a group like this was very entertaining … and it’s something all the men can get to.” The men meet from 9.45am on the first Tuesday of each month (but the second Tuesday of November) at Christ Church Anglican Church hall, on the corner of Raleigh Road and Unitt Street, Melton. Kids walk the walk Pupils at Balliang East Primary School are stepping up to the challenge of walking to school every day for a month. October is Walk to School month, and all 37 pupils at Balliang East Primary and their teachers have started the month-long challenge of walking to and from school each day. The free campaign encourages primary school children and their parents to leave their car behind and stretch out their legs on the school run. “I think it’s really good for the kids,� said school principal Caryn Fox. “There’s the whole social side of it, as well as the exercise, of course, and the students get to chat before they start the school day.� The school first took part in the event in 2011, back when it was only a walk-to-school day, and

it won the Golden Shoe award for its high levels of participation. The school arranges a meeting place for pupils to start their walk from because many travel from points such as Werribee. The teachers meet the pupils there each morning and guide them to school on foot. “There’s a lot of commitment, but it’s worth it in the end,� Ms Fox said. The school took the top prize again last year for its commitment in clocking up the kilometres, winning a $1000 sports voucher. Here’s the sweet spot Bacchus Marsh is blooming with cherry blossom bliss ahead of the annual Strawberries & Cherries Trail Weekend in November. The festivities will celebrate the arrival of the strawberry and cherry season, with visitors from all over Victoria invited to experience the taste of fresh summer produce. Local family-run farms are the sweet spots for the weekend, offering pick-your-own cherries and strawberries and freshly picked and packed alternatives. Glenda Jones, of Jeff Jones Plants & Produce, says the strawberries and cherries are popular fruits and attract lots of visitors to town each year. “It’s an opportunity for people to enjoy fresh produce,” Ms Jones said. “Visitors get a taste for it and hopefully they continue to come to Bacchus Marsh for the

whole summer fruit season.” She said berry lovers could be hands on and experience a “rural hit” rather than just getting their fruit out of a box bought from the supermarket. “They can enjoy the whole ambience and see all the fruit trees and all the fruit hanging from them,” Ms Jones said. Get into the mix It’s often said the best wines are made in the vineyard rather than the winery. Just as you can’t make a great meal with average ingredients, good wine can’t be made with crappy grapes. However, there’s one key element of winemaking – often overlooked in discussions about wine – that can elevate very good grapes to great wine: the creation of the final blend. Part of the winemaker’s bag of tricks to get extra complexity into their wines is to split grapes from different vineyards into small parcels and treat them slightly differently. Winemakers will also use different yeasts, which can affect flavour and texture, and mature them in a range of oak barrels. Smaller or younger barrels impart more tannin and oak characteristics. Barrels made of French oak add cedar, spice and vanilla characters, while American oak adds coconut and vanilla flavours. At the end of the process, all these different wines get blended to produce the final wine. “Blending is different for every wine,â€? says Wynns Coonawarra winemaker Sarah Pidgeon. “The most obvious blending people think of is if you’ve got more than one variety, you’ve got to sort out what’s going to taste good in terms of getting that varietal mix right; getting the flavours and structure right and balancing that. “We blend with one variety as well – for wines such as our Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s the ultimate selection of great vineyards from up and down the Coonawarra strip, but we have to make a selection to blend those.â€?

Pidgeon can blend grapes from up to 20 vineyards to produce that wine. The process can take up to two years. “We look at the 20 vineyards – that’s a good year – and we look at every one of those parcels in barrel every month and that gives us a rough idea about how the wine is tracking and how much maturation it needs,â€? Pidgeon says. “The time each wine spends in oak is very individual and varies from year to year and it also varies with the vineyard.

“You’re monitoring that throughout its maturation until you think they’re ready to come out – around 14 months at this point [for Coonawarra cabernet sauvignon] – and you start planning which wines come out first.â€? Blending isn’t limited to wines made from multiple varietals, such as cabernet shiraz or cabernet merlot blends, or vineyards. Single vineyard wines are generally blends, too. “Normally, for a single vineyard wine, it’s picked just once – some of our vineyards are really small and we can only do them in one pick. We’ve got one shot,â€? Pidgeon says. “Larger vineyards will get picked three or four times and we’ll treat each picking differently in the winery. Even then, we’ll choose the batch that we like the best. “But, of that batch, the wine has gone into different barrels – with different ages and made by a mix of coopers – and we need to get the blending of those right before bottling.â€?

Lions keep claws on top spot By Liam Twomey In just its third year, the Bacchus Marsh Basketball Association continued to produce the goods on court. The latest piece of silverware added to the club’s fast-filling trophy cabinet is Victorian Junior Basketball League’s division 2 championship for the under-12 girls division. The Lions squad of Eloise Shirra-Gibb, Logan Hegarty, Jordan Wilson, Hannah Davies, Maddison Djatschenko, Trinity Steele, Hayley Hamilton and Ella Percy blitzed their way through the season, accumulating an ultra-impressive 17-1 win/loss record to secure the top spot. Basketball association president Peter Matthewman said it was an outstanding effort from the team. “They had to go through try-outs, which were in early October last year. From that they get selected to become part of our squad. “This was their first year that they have played in the squad and they made it into the Victorian Junior League 2. That’s the highest we have had a team and to lose only one game for the year is a great effort,” Matthewman said. “They really gelled well together and it was just a fantastic effort by all of them. They all worked really hard.” After winning 15 games during the regular season, the Lions produced their best effort when it really mattered, booking their place in the grand final with a 25-point hammering of Bulleen. They then travelled to the state basketball centre in Wantirna South to face Diamond Valley in the grand final last month. After a tough opening, the Bacchus Marsh girls again rose to the challenge, winning 30-27.
