Two Darley mothers are hoping to help children feel empowered. Tammy Bennett and Nerissa Kennedy recently released their first children’s book, I Found The Answer, a response and answer to popular nursery rhyme Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. And now they want to share the answer with the children of the world – the real stars. “They are the stars,� Kennedy said. “They are the diamond of creation.� The mothers, who have six children between them, hope children will share the verses of the book with each other, sing them and have fun. But their main hope is that the book serves as a reminder to children that they are stars. The pair, who have been friends for more than two decades, spent lots of time over the
years doodling, writing and sharing stories before they turned their words and passion into a project called Sacred Friends. Two men stole a charity piggy bank from the Westwaters Hotel in Caroline Springs last week. The pair entered the hotel at 7.50am on Wednesday, October 29, and while one distracted staff the other cut the chain securing the piggy bank, which carried donations for Very Special Kids. One offender was Caucasian, 18-20 years, 175cm tall, of medium build and wearing dark clothing and bright blue runners. The second was darker skinned, had short dark hair and was wearing a dark T-shirt and jacket. They are believed to have left in a red Subaru WRX. Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Two charged over burglaries
Two Melton youths have been charged over burglaries at Melton Waves, Melton Golf Club and Reynolds Place Recreation Reserve overnight on October 21 and 22. A 14-year-old was charged in relation to all three burglaries, while a 19-year-old was charged over the incidents at Melton Waves and Reynolds Place.
Police nick car-theft suspects
Two men from Melton South have been charged over the theft of motor vehicles. A 24-year-old allegedly stole one vehicle from Yarraville and another from Melton. He was intercepted on October 29 driving a vehicle displaying different number plates at the front and rear. Both plates were stolen. He was charged with theft and will appear in court at a later date.

An open and shut case By Yasemin Talat Melton residents can now pick up their parcels any time they like thanks to new around-the-clock lockers on High Street. The Parcel Lockers 24/7 give residents the flexibility of picking up their parcels at a time that’s convenient. Local business owners are thrilled by the news, saying it will help boost business and make online shopping more appealing. Johanne Curran, of JoJo’s Pre-Loved Toys, said the initiative would help bring more people and potential business back to High Street.
“It will encourage people to come back into the main shopping and business district of Melton,” Ms Curran said. “And it gives people the flexibility to buy things online and the choice to have them sent to a secure place where they’re not going to get damaged or taken.” Ms Curran said the lockers could encourage her customers to buy online and have things delivered outside business hours. The lockers also allowed her to have items delivered somewhere secure rather than to the shop or to her house when she wasn’t home. “You can pick it up at your convenience
rather than having to be at the post office by 4pm or 5pm,” she said. Residents and business owners need to create a free Australia Post account and then register to use the parcel lockers, selecting Melton as the delivery destination. When the parcel arrives, customers will receive an email with a unique PIN code allowing them to access the locker. A new, improved $1.5 million fire station could soon be built in Buninyong – if Labor is elected next month. Opposition emergency services spokesman Wade Noonan last week joined local Labor MPs Geoff Howard and Sharon Knight at the Buninyong CFA station to announce Labor’s plans for the new building. Buninyong CFA captain Marc Cannan welcomed the announcement, with his crew equally as excited about the plans. “It’s good to have some commitment because it’s been in discussion for some time now,” he said. “We’re very pleased to have the opportunity to have a new facility in Buninyong. “The station in its current state is slowly falling into disrepair. Like any old building, it requires upgrading. It’s old and needs to be replaced.” Mr Cannan said the current station was too small and didn’t have enough room for the CFA vehicles. The existing station on Learmonth Street is almost 60 years old, and volunteers meet and train in reused portable buildings. “The least we can do for our hardworking firefighters and volunteers is to build clean, safe and modern facilities,” Mr Noonan said. The $1.5 million from Labor would fund the acquisition of a larger site and construction of a new station. Yasemin Talat

Garage remote a thief’s ally By Charlene Macaulay
With the pain, mateship stays Ken O’Sullivan was just 17 when he enlisted in the army in 1941. He saw it as his chance to be a hero and he threatened his mother that if she didn’t sign his permission slip he’d go anyway. The years from 1941-45 were life changing for Mr O’Sullivan. He left his home in Williamstown for training across Australia before heading to New Guinea and then New Britain with the 42nd Landing Craft Company. Now 91 and living in Bacchus Marsh, he quietly reflects on those days. “It was the hardest time of my life. I lost quite a few friends. But we weren’t fighting all the time and there were good times, too.” Mr O’Sullivan prefers to speak of his fondest memories – like he and his mates hiding coconuts and waiting for them to ferment so they could share a drink together. And the time he asked his mother to send him whisky to sell to the English, which she did so by hiding in a loaf of bread. But the most important thing that would continue to live on, he said, was the mateship. “Mateship was do or die. You’d do anything, and I mean anything, for your mates,” he said. “We survived because of mateship.” Mr O’Sullivan said he hoped young people would attend shrines and special ceremonies on Remembrance Day to help keep the stories and history alive.

Police are putting Brimbank and Melton residents on alert following a series of burglaries during which thieves steal remote controls from cars to burgle garages and, in some instances, houses. Brimbank proactive policing unit’s Leading Senior Constable Matthew Mudie said offenders were breaking into cars to steal garage remotes then gaining access to properties through internal doors connecting garages to houses. “Some of them are what we’d call aggravated burglaries, where the people are home when the offender accesses the garage and the house,” he said. “A lot of people leave that door between the garage and house unlocked. “There’s been a number of instances where offenders have broken into the [home owner’s] car and got the remote to access the garage, and that’s how they gained entry.” Leading Senior Constable Mudie said police had seen a spike in these kinds of offences over the past month, with thieves striking at all times of the day and night. He cautioned residents to remove garage remotes from their vehicles, keep the doors between garages and properties locked and, if on holidays, switch off the power to roller doors to ensure they cannot be opened. Brimbank Inspector Chris Gilbert backed up Leading Senior Constable Mudie’s comments last week, calling on residents to practise vigilance when it came to their cars and properties. “On many occasions we find that homes have been left unsecured, particularly at night when residents have retired for the night,” Inspector Gilbert said. “Most burglars and thieves will prey on your complacency. Taking a few simple steps… will defeat their intent.”

Go a little bit M.A.D A Holden salesman once told me Fords are not cars,
they’re 20,000 spare parts travelling in close formation. The work of Swiss artist Fabian Oefner reminds me of this statement. His meticulously accurate cars explode into their individual parts. He’s an artist adopted by the M.A.D Gallery, a homage to mechanical art devices. If you’re a technology nut and you’ve never heard of the M.A.D. Gallery, you have a treat in store. I knew nothing of it until a media release turned up from someone in Geneva plugging a book of truck photography. Truck photography? Has someone suddenly made trucks beautiful? After looking, I decided not. But the gallery’s website is stunning. M.A.D. Gallery’s website is chockers with beautiful and compelling technology. It’s big on watches and timepieces (it calls them horological machines) but it also deals with motorcycles, penny-farthings, music boxes, musical instruments and Fabian Oefner’s exploding cars.
The M.A.D. Gallery opened in 2011 in Geneva’s old town – and a second M.A.D. Gallery has since opened in, of all places, Taipei. As well as a permanent display of timepieces, it gathers glorious examples of mechanical art from around the world, “each one making your heart beat that little bit faster”, the website assures. The gallery is an offshoot of an operation called MB&F, or Maximilian Büsser and friends, which has gathered people to design and build a radical and original “horological masterpiece” every year.

Star signing is a V good thing By Liam Twomey There won’t be any respite for Big V basketball defenders next year with Melton confirming Anthony Kimble will return to the club in 2015. Recruited as an import, the American suited up for his first season for the Thoroughbreds this year and wasted no time making himself at home. He dominated the division 1 competition, averaging 21.8 points a game and shooting at more than 50 per cent from the field. Newly appointed Melton coach Julie McCallum said it was great to have Kimble returning for another season. “It gives us a core to work around,” she said. “Last year, he was the third leading scorer in the division. He brought a lot to the team both on and off the court … he was a lot of the reason that we were filling the grand stand every week. “He is a great all-round player for the club.” Kimble’s best performance came in round 16 when he scored 31 points in his side’s two-point win against the Geelong Supercats. His injection of points each week played a major role in Melton finishing third after the regular season. The club’s post season push was halted by an elimination finals exit at the hands of the Southern Peninsula Sharks. McCallum, who was an assistant coach at

the Thoroughbreds in 2014, said there were plenty of positives to take from the year, Melton’s first in division 1. “We had a good season last year,” she said. “We have learnt a lot from it and we can now take that into next season and hopefully do a little bit better. “We just need a bit more consistency. When we got it right we were good, but when we didn’t we were terrible. “We need to make sure we are getting it right more often. “I have been a big part of the club for a while now so it has been a pretty smooth transition. “Work commitments eased a little bit and that gave me a bit more extra time to be able to take on the top job.” As far as her goals for next year, McCallum said finals were at the top of her agenda. From Melton’s 2014 playing list, only Joel Bellman and Jarryd Watene will not return next season. The club is expecting to finalise its other roster spots in the coming weeks.
