Theft at landscaping company

Two arrested for assault

Police have arrested two people following an alleged assault on a 25-year-old man at his West Melton address. Police say a 27-year-old Kingsville man and a 32-year-old Sunshine man allegedly attacked the man before taking him to an ATM and forcing him to withdraw cash. The two men have been remanded in custody and will appear at Sunshine Magistrates Court at a later date.

Avid readers are being encouraged by Moorabool Shire Council to keep reading and take part in a Summer Reading Club challenge these school holidays. The national challenge encourages students of all ages to read through the summer holidays and win prizes along the way. The theme for this summer’s challenge is “adventure”, with young readers gearing up for adventure through the pages of their books. Students need to read 10 books to go into the draw for the major prize of a Nintendo 3DS XL, with a maximum of 10 entries per person. The preschool prize is a Leapfrog Leap Pad Ultra: the primary prize is a $100 National Geographic gift pack and the secondary prize a

‘Lock up or lose it’
Police are urging all drivers to “lock up or lose it” following continuing thefts from cars. On Friday, November 14, offenders smashed windows of parked cars at the Diggers Rest railway station before stealing “low-value items”. In an unrelated incident, offenders targeted cars parked in driveways in Melton.

Money man cashes in By Sumeyya Ilanbey When all his peers were blowing their money on beer, Vincent Wong was being smart. The 24-year-old witnessed first-hand the devastating effects of financial hardship and vowed to help others in desperate need. “It’s not just about building financial goals, but building meaningful relationships around those goals,” he said.
After watching his parents’ financial struggles when he was a child, Mr Wong quickly grasped the value and importance of money. He is now a wealth manager in Melton for money management company Yellow Brick Road and has just won the company’s rising star award. “I appreciated the value of money because of my parents. Knowing when to spend and when to save was the key part,” he said.
Mr Wong said the biggest mistake people made was “spending as they go”. He encouraged everyone to dedicate 30 minutes a week to sorting out their finances. “It’s really just making minor tweaks and understanding how much you’re spending,” he said. “We’re not here to tell people what they can and can’t spend money on. But we can figure out whether it’s worthwhile spending on.”
The burnt out remains of the Diggers Rest hotel will continue to crumble, following the withdrawal of an application to demolish it. The hotel, which was destroyed by fire on October 30, 2008, has been the subject of debate for the past six years. A planning application to demolish the remains was lodged back in December 2008 and a decision was expected at last week’s council meeting. But the applicant, hotel owner Diggers Rest Properties Pty. Ltd, withdrew the application. The council had received three objections and 64 joint letters supporting the demolition of the hotel. Diggers Rest resident Kim Davis said a decision needed to be made immediately. “Within six years, a decision should have been made,” Ms Davis said. “It should ultimately be demolished and [the land] put to better use.” Mel Tyquin, also a Diggers Rest resident, said she’d like to see a pub re-established on the site but the ruins must go immediately. “You can’t just leave it like this,” she said. “You look at [the ruins] and you feel sad; you don’t feel any pride. By Charlene Macaulay Construction of a $125 million private hospital in St Albans is tipped to start in the new year. Sunshine Private Hospital, to be located directly across the road from the Sunshine Hospital on Furlong Road, will include 150 beds on seven levels and is expected to treat 12,000 patients a year. Dr Laurie Williams, one of the developers of the project and owner of Western Day Surgery, the existing day procedure centre on site, said the hospital would be operating fully within 18 to 24 months of construction starting. Services offered are likely to include gynaecology, maternity, IVF, ophthalmology, endoscopy, urology and cardiac surgery. Western Day Surgery will be demolished to make way for the new hospital which will offer an expansion of existing specialist consulting services, a general practice, a dental clinic, radiology services, a pharmacy and cafe. The hospital will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, but it is yet to be decided whether it will have an emergency department. Dr Williams said the hospital would complement the services provided by Western Day Surgery. “A private hospital will provide greater access to specialist and general medical services to local people who would otherwise have to travel to the other side of Melbourne for treatment,” he said. “Our site is across the road from one of the state’s busiest public hospitals … and

Brimbank council city development director Stuart Menzies said Sunshine Private Hospital had the potential to influence the increasing health-related training and employment opportunities in the Sunshine National Employment Cluster, as designated in Plan Melbourne. “The Sunshine area already accommodates a significant level of investment in existing social and physical infrastructure, such as the Sunshine Hospital, the Western Centre for Health Research and Education, and two campuses of Victoria University,” Mr Menzies said. “The investment in a private hospital in this key area for Melbourne’s west is also very welcome.”

Which bank banks $1m? By Yasemin Talat A high-profile double-fronted freehold building in Melton’s main street has sold for $1.15 million at auction. The property at 285-287 High Street was owned by the Commonwealth Bank which has moved to the new Woodgrove Shopping precinct. The buyer is a local accountant, who intends to occupy the premises. Agents James Gregson and Adam Lester, from Fitzroys, handled the campaign on behalf of the bank. Mr Gregson said more than 30 parties showed interest in the property, which helped drive up the sale price. He said the $1.15 million sale price was “quite large” and a “strong result” for the area. “It’s a good price,” Mr Gregson said. “[High Street] is a good solid strip… and it should continue to be a strong strip.” Mr Gregson said the property appealed to many different buyer profiles ranging from developers to local businesses, because of its central position on High Street and the opportunity for development. “The property offered opportunity to occupy, invest or develop, with excellent development and subdivision potential, allowing a purchaser to make their mark in a prime retail location in a major western growth corridor,” he said. Mr Gregson said the sale last week showed there was confidence in the local market and Melton was an area of growth that continued to offer opportunity to local businesses.

Libs promise extra trains Commuters on the Ballarat line have been promised an extra 40 weekly train trips between Ballarat and Melbourne if the Napthine government is re-elected. The extra services will mean trains will run between Ballarat and the city every 40 minutes during off-peak times. The new services will start in January, 2017. Liberal candidate for Buninyong Ben Taylor said the move would benefit neighbouring towns as much as it would Ballarat. “All these extra trains will stop at Ballan, Bacchus Marsh and Melton as well as commence or terminate at Ballarat,” Mr Taylor said. “So it’s about improving access to jobs in Melton or Ballarat for all residents along the line.” Liberal candidate for Wendouree Craig Coltman was thrilled by the announcement. “The Coalition has committed to purchasing 12 new X’Trapolis trains from Alstom Ballarat and now we’re bringing Ballarat and Melbourne closer together with much better off-peak train frequency,” he said. The Napthine government has promised at least one extra week-day service for Albury, Ararat, Echuca, Warrnambool, Sale, Maryborough, Traralgon and Shepparton. Suite dreams are made of this By Charlene Macaulay Scoring an upgrade to the presidential suite of a luxury hotel is the stuff travellers’ dreams are made of. That dream became a reality recently when I checked in to the Park Hyatt Melbourne for a girls’ night to find we had been upgraded from a club deluxe room to the presidential suite. From the moment we opened the 17th-floor door, it was clear we’d hit the jackpot. There are not enough words to describe how large and lavish everything in the 240-square-metre suite is. Starting out in the circular entrance hall, we were greeted by a large open-plan lounge and dining room complete with fireplace, baby grand piano and stunning views of St Patrick’s Cathedral and the Fitzroy Gardens. From there, double doors lead to a study and library and follow through to the master bedroom, with two king-size beds, a fireplace, TV and his-and-hers chaise lounges. The massive marble bathroom was my favourite, with a gargantuan jetted spa with built-in TV; extra-large shower with a standard showerhead, hand-held showerhead and jets set into the walls – you know, just in case you missed a spot. The bathroom also sported his-and-hers vanities stocked with luxurious Aesop amenities – and an exercise bike. This lead into a walk-in wardrobe and dressing room larger than some hotel rooms, which then lead to a kitchenette. The whole suite features rosewood and silk walls, plus original paintings. As part of our package, we had access to the Park Lounge on the 19th floor, which offered two hours of evening drinks and canapes, and a continental breakfast the

next morning. The Park Lounge is available to guests staying in Park Hyatt suites, or those who have paid that bit extra for club privileges – and it is definitely worth the extra money. Enjoying even more stunning views of Melbourne, we washed down our canapes with champagne and questioned hotel staff about celebrities who had also stayed in the presidential suite – unfortunately, discretion
is key at the Park Hyatt and our lovely waiters would not give any names. However, a quick Google search revealed we were in the same company as the Rolling Stones, George Bush senior, Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman. After our evening drinks, we headed back down to the 17th floor to make the most of our suite, trying out the piano and spa before retiring to the very comfortable beds to watch a movie. My only complaint is that
we only had a night to indulge in our lucky upgrade. The Park Hyatt Melbourne, located on Parliament Square, is tucked away behind Parliament House and offers that rare mix of being secluded and yet within walking distance of restaurants, shops and everything else Melbourne’s CBD has to offer. The hotel also features a 23-metre indoor swimming pool and spa, fitness centre, The Lounge, and Radii restaurant and bar.

On the Otago trail By Ben Thomas Mention Central Otago and one wine springs to mind: pinot noir. Established in the late 1990s, Central Otago is New Zealand’s youngest wine region and its rise has been nothing short of miraculous. Now famous for its pinot noir, the region’s pioneers had other grapes in mind when they first established vineyards. “In the early days of Central Otago we had vineyards with cabernet sauvignon, syrah, gewürtztraminer, sauvignon blanc and chenin blanc,” says Blair Walter, who made his first Central Otago wine with Felton Road in 1997. “It’s gone from a smorgasbord to being 70 per cent pinot noir, then pinot gris and riesling. There’s a small amount of chardonnay and sauvignon blanc these days.”
Regional Styles From the Gibbston Valley to Lowburn, Felton Road’s Blair Walter has the low-down on the different styles of pinot noir across the region. There are four distinct sub-regions: Gibbston, Alexandra, Wanaka and the Cromwell basin, which includes Bannockburn, Lowburn, Pisa and Bendigo and accounts for 70 per cent of the production in Central Otago. “Gibbston has a higher elevation and cooler sites, so there’s more earthier, briar, green-tinged cooler-climate styles,” says Walter. “Bannockburn and Bendigo, being a bit warmer, tend to be a bit fleshier and more densely structured, and Alexandra, being a little bit cooler, produces slightly lighter, more elegant wines. “Wanaka’s a little hard to characterise because there aren’t many wineries. But because of its westerly location and slightly higher elevation it’s a little more like Gibbston, with darker shades.”

Central Otago has risen to become the third-largest wine-growing region in New Zealand – Marlborough is the biggest by far, with about 23,000 hectares planted to vines, followed by Hawkes Bay (4500 hectares) and Central Otago with 2000 hectares. The main reason pinot noir has risen to the top is Central Otago’s climate. Sitting on the 45th parallel, Central Otago shares a latitude with other revered winemaking regions – Bordeaux, Oregon’s Willamette Valley and Italy’s Piedmont in the northern hemisphere. Jets groomed for the top flight By Lance Jenkinson Western Jets region manager Shane Sexton says AFL draft night marks the end of a five-year transformation – from local footballers to full-time professionals – for the lucky players selected. The Jets have four dedicated scouts and a coaching network to discover talented players within the Western Region Football League and clubs that are under their umbrella in the Essendon, Riddell and Ballarat leagues. Hype surrounding a player might only start once he reaches the under-18 TAC Cup, but the Jets’ hard work behind the scenes starts much earlier and with little fanfare. “We start trying to identify players when the kids are 14,” Sexton said. The Jets’ scouting network has been flawless in Sexton’s time at the club. No player is yet to land on an AFL list from any region the Jets overlooked. “This is one of the things we pride ourselves on,” Sexton said. “All I can do is go on my time here … there’s not one player who has got through to AFL footy that we didn’t know about,” Sexton said. “Our coverage is really good – it needs to be to be able to identify the best athletes.” So what do the Jets look for in a 14-year-old? Most have not developed physically by that age; some are yet to make their mind up about their chosen sport and it’s an important time in their schooling. It’s simple – the Jets just want to see a player with sound fundamentals for their age. “At that age level, we’re just looking for kids who can play football,” Sexton said. The first year in the Jets system is the calm before the storm, so to speak. A player gets familiar with the club and the

club gets to build a profile of the individual. The expectations ramp up for the 15 year olds, with a greater emphasis on skill acquisition and fitness programs involving running and body weights. The 16 year olds have a total weights program attached to their training as their athletes’ bodies start to take shape. This is a period in which a player can press for state championship squads and higher honours with state sides. “Once they progress to those levels, you’re talking about playing against the best teams, the best individuals around the state,” Sexton said. “It’s not just a matter of running out and getting a kick – you’re going to have to earn a kick.” AFL recruiters begin to form opinions about players at this age level. The TAC Cup year is when players are thrust into the spotlight, with their every move – on and off the field – monitored by AFL scouts. The top priority for a player is to play good football for the Jets and do it within the team concept. They may be played out of position to see if they can add another string to their bow. Elite youngsters go on to represent Vic Metro at the national championships, getting the chance to play at AFL venues and in front of national television audiences in what can be a sink or swim assessment of their future. Once the TAC Cup has concluded, it is no holiday for players or staff, with further coaching and personal training required to keep players sharp for the draft combine or state screening. “The recruiters have made up their minds whether they’ve got the skills, whether they can get a kick, whether they’re inside or outside, small or tall, midfielder or flanker – they can see all that,” Sexton said.

The last port of call on the road to the draft is meetings with AFL club personnel and assessments by AFL medical staff. Year 12 students have a curfew around the school exam period so they are not distracted from their studies. Ten days out from the draft, the Jets give their players a well-earned break, during which they can reflect on their junior career – with the odd sleepless night thrown in, given the draft on the horizon.

“My view is the kids are entitled to a little bit of peace from the whole thing if they can, but they’re going to be thinking about it every day, obviously,” Sexton said. Thursday night might seem the end of the road for those who miss out, but there is a second chance six days later with the AFL rookie draft. There’s also the unconventional route to the big league through the VFL, while some players will just be happy to go back and play with their mates at their local club.
