Scouts honour, it’s fun The Derek Foden Rover Crew is using a community grant to help give back to the community. The crew received the grant from Moorabool council to help support upcoming projects, which include a community Christmas event next week. Part of Scouts Victoria, the crew is made up of “rovers” aged between 18 and 25. They are busily preparing for the Christmas event, which will combine the fun of markets and movies. Secretary and fundraising manager Daniel Webb said the night would be packed with activities for the whole family. “There’ll be community activities and kids activities that will bring families together,” he said.
And with Christmas around the corner, Daniel is hoping everyone will join the Christmas spirit – even Santa is dropping in. Daniel said the market will support local businesses, with more than 50 craft stalls expected to showcase their wares. The market, from 4-7.30pm at Maddingley Park, Bacchus Marsh, will be followed by the outdoor screening of two family movies. There will also be live entertainment, kids rides and jumping castles throughout the event. Tickets for the movies are $6 for both films, with kids under three admitted free. Indigenous artists will launch a Rivers to Recognition initiative to commemorate and recognise the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the first Australians. Archie Roach, Frank Yamma, Nancy Bates and others will take to the concert stage, while community forums will start the discussion about recognition. Rivers to Recognition is being delivered by the Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton, Moonee Valley and Wyndham councils. Man sought over theft from cars
Police are on the hunt for a man who has targeted cars in Taylors Hill, Hillside, Caroline Springs and Burnside. It’s believed the man, in his 30s, is bald, wears glasses and drives a black vehicle. Expenses ‘all above board’ By Sumeyya Ilanbey Melton councillors were reimbursed $21,300 in the three months to October, with more than half of that amount going to Cr Kathy Madjlik. Cr Madjlik was reimbursed about $11,000 for expenses, while other councillors, including outgoing Cr Broden Borg, claimed $10,300 between them. Newly appointed Cr Michael Matalewski did not claim any expenses. Councillors were reimbursed for expenses such as attending conferences, local travel, communications, functions and carers on top of their quarterly salary. The bulk of Cr Madjlik’s expenses for the past quarter were for conferences – $6500. Her claimed carer expenses were $3500. “Unlike other councillors, I don’t have access to free child-minding for my daughter, who has severe, multiple disabilities,” Cr Madjlik said. “My expenses are a direct reflection of how hard I work for my community. The less councillors work, the less expenses they ultimately incur.” In the 15 months from July 1, 2013, to September 30, 2014, councillors claimed $76,000. Most of the money went to Cr Madjlik ($40,000), while the other councillors shared in $36,000, of which Cr Bob Turner claimed about half ($15,000). Cr Turner said most of his claims were for “very important” conferences and seminars. “Training events are very important to
try and increase my knowledge about local government,” he said. “Last year, I was full-time [as mayor], and found more time for training. But I generally don’t claim anything other than that.” Watts ward’s Cr Lara Carli claimed the least – $2500 in those 15 months, with the bulk of it being for her communication expenses.

“We’re given an allowance as councillors and the allowance I’ve been given is enough for me to represent my community and perform my council duties,” she said. In the same 15 months, Cr Borg claimed $2500, Cr Sophie Ramsey $6500, Cr Renata Cugliari $4600 and Cr Nola Dunn $5500. Melton council customer engagement manager Daniel Hogan said all councillor expenses had been “legitimately incurred and processed through the appropriate channels”. “Across councillors, there is significant variance in hours committed, meetings attended, training pursued, qualifications attained – all at the discretion and based on the personal circumstances of each respective councillor,” Mr Hogan said. “Councillors, or officers for that matter, should not be personally out of pocket for conducting council business or duties.”

New school takes shape The new Arnolds Creek primary school is on schedule to be finished by Christmas. Melton council acting chief executive Maurie Heaney said the multi-million dollar school in Claret Ash Boulevard, Melton West would relieve pressure on existing schools in the north-west of the municipality. “[But] council will continue to advocate for new funding for schools at Eynesbury and Taylors Hill West and for a secondary school in our eastern corridor,” he said. Newly appointed principal Frank Pawlowicz said Arnolds Creek primary school was in an ideal location – between a kindergarten and a community hub. “Schools are really important for residential growth zones,” Mr Pawlowicz said. “And the area where the school is being set up is fantastic, there’s a kinder and a community
centre nearby. It’s a whole hub for Arnolds Creek residents.” More than 100 pupils have already enrolled at the school, with 40 of those in prep. “The classes will be an open environment but will cater for individual needs,” Mr Pawlowicz said. “If kids know how to add, why teach addition? Each child is individual. “We’ve hired five [teachers] already and we’re in the process of getting another five, which we hope will be by December 9.” He says the school’s black, red and gold logo is a tribute to Aboriginal Australians, who have a significant cultural history in Arnolds Creek. Enough of violence Organisations and groups across Melton are banding together to help put a stop to violence against women. Following White Ribbon Day last Tuesday, Women’s Health West, Melton City Council, Djerriwarrh Community Health Services and the Zonta Club of Melton are just some of the organisations continuing to take steps to stop violence against women. The organisations will join the international campaign “16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence”, which kicked off on White Ribbon Day and will continue until International Human Rights Day on December 10. The campaign helps put the spotlight on violence as a violation of human rights. As part of the campaign, Women’s Health West will distribute one photo a day of
mayors, councillors, managers, executive officers and others from across the western region who declare their commitment to stopping violence by highlighting an action their organisation is undertaking. Health promotion co-ordinator at Women’s Health West, Sally Camilleri, says the campaign is a visual way to show the great work local leaders are doing to embed cultural change in the western region and in the fabric of their organisations. “For violence against women to become a thing of the past, we need to change the causes, which are gender inequality and rigid gender stereotypes,” Ms Camilleri said. It helps to talk about it A Melton couple has stepped up to show support for residents who are battling depression and anxiety by launching two new support groups. Val and Steve Billington, who are both qualified psychology counsellors, have started a free depression and anxiety support group which meets at Melton South Community Centre every Monday. Ms Billington said depression and anxiety affected many people in the community, but not many were willing to talk about it. She said she hoped the group would provide a support system for residents with mental health concerns. Ms Billington herself has been dealing with depression and anxiety and says she understands how hard it can be to talk about it, or let others in.
“I know what it’s like to suffer with mental health issues myself,” she said. “I would have loved to have somebody there for me, like a support group. “It takes some courage and confidence, but the more you tell your story the easier it gets.” Ms Billington encouraged anyone wanting to chat in a relaxed, confidential and friendly environment to come along. A support group for females will be run by Val on Mondays from 10am. The group for men will be run by Steve, also on Mondays, from 7pm. The Billingtons also run a sing-along group at Melton South Community Centre every Tuesday from 10am where people of all abilities are welcome. For more details, call 9747 8576. Yasemin Talat

Lion bowlers do the job By Liam Twomey Melton moved to the top of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association north-west first XI ladder after a 132-run thrashing of Kew at the weekend. The Lions were in the box seat after day one thanks to a brilliant century from David Kirk. The middle-order batsman smashed 103 not out to lead his side to 5-284 at stumps. When play resumed on Saturday with Kew batting, it was a fired-up Brad Jones who ensured Melton wouldn’t be giving up any of its momentum. Jones sent both Kew openers packing to leave the pursuit in trouble at 2-36. The damage didn’t stop there for Kew, with Nathan Geisler continuing to apply pressure on the middle order. He claimed back to back wickets in 10 runs as Kew slumped to 4-46. Despite a brief fight-back from Steven Gilmour, who made 60, there was no saving Kew, which was bowled out for 152 in the 57th over. While it was Jones and Geisler who did the early damage with the ball, Steve Buhagiar also got in on the act, taking 4-34 to wrap up the tail. In a huge match this round, Melton will take on third-placed Werribee in a two-day fixture at Chirnside Park. The Tigers will go into the contest in hot form after smashing Preston at the weekend. Werribee blasted 6-341 in its first innings, with Tim O’Brien top scoring with 127. In reply, Preston could manage just 78. With plenty of time left in the match, Werribee looked to be on track for an outright win as Preston struggled in its second innings. But the middle order rallied, surviving the required 40 overs to finish at 8-146.

It was a tough day for Melton in Bowls Victoria’s division 1 metro pennant competition on Sunday. On the first leg of back-to-back away games, Melton came up short against Eltham, 17-86 to 1-68. Although the loss didn’t drop Melton from its third spot on the ladder, it has put pressure on the club’s stranglehold on a top-four spot. Melton was previously a comfortable 18 points ahead of fifth, but the gap has closed to just four. Melton will be hoping it can bounce back when it travels to take on competition struggler Berwick this weekend. But it was better news for Melton in division 2, with the club’s second side enjoying a huge win against Sunbury, 18-104 to 0-69.
Baseball
Melton-based North Western Titans continued their outstanding run of form in Baseball Victoria’s summer league competition on Sunday. The club’s latest win, by 19-1, came against Geelong. Since losing to top-of-the table Ballarat City in round five, North Western has won four matches in a row. The Titans have also proved a hitting powerhouse, combining for 73 runs in the last month. In what will be a chance at revenge this weekend, North Western will take on Ballarat City again. Steve Buhagiar continued his strong season with the ball for Melton on Saturday. (Wayne Hawkins)
