Spirit of community Gordon resident Stephen Mack is helping spread the community spirit this festive season with a gift for Melton’s Chin community. Mr Mack has been collecting unwanted bicycles and repairing and restoring them so he can donate them to the Chin refugee community. He said he was inspired by a similar exchange program happening in the northern suburbs. “I’m concerned that we need to be showing compassion to people who are less well off. I don’t think the average person fully understands the sorts of circumstances these people have been facing,” he said. The Chin people are an ethnic group from Myanmar who have experienced ongoing human right violations including genocide, child labour, slavery and human trafficking.
Mr Mack has worked closely with the Djerriwarrh Health Services’ health promotion team to connect with the Chin people. In just two months he has donated more than 20 bikes. Last week an official bicycle handover ceremony was held at Djerriwarrh in Melton in the presence of Djerriwarrh Health Services, MacKillop Family Services, Djerriwarrh Community and Education and Melton Chin Community members. The wider community can get behind the project by donating helmets and bicycle parts like tubes, pumps and accessories. Christmas trees, scented candles and the whirlwind emotions of Christmas can trigger asthma symptoms, the National Asthma Council Australia has warned. Cypress and pine trees produce high amounts of pollen and real Christmas trees can harbour mould. Australians with asthma are being warned to stay away from real Christmas trees; clean stored decorations and artificial trees; take care of their mental health; avoid scented candles and oils; and enjoy their Christmas pudding.
Police operation
Melton police conducted about 2200 breath tests and netted 15 drivers for exceeding the permissible alcohol level as part of Operation Followup. The operation – between Brimbank and Melton Highway Patrol – went throughout October and November.

Women get a lone voice In 100 years there have been only 17 female councillors across Moorabool, including Tonia Dudzik, the only woman currently serving. Cr Dudzik is being recognised for her efforts as a councillor in a new book The right to vote; the right to stand which coincides with this year’s centenary of women having the right to stand in council elections. The mother of two said she wanted to see more women running for council in the future. “Today, 100 years on, 35 per cent of all councillors in Victoria are female,” she said. “I hope that in the future our council consists of 50 per cent women. “I hope to inspire many more women throughout Moorabool to stand in a council election at some time in their lives.” “The reason I became a councillor was because [I felt] there weren’t enough women
and young people on council and I was unhappy with the level of community consultation on a number of issues,” she said. Cr Dudzik said more youth space and improved roads were important issues for her. “I’m determined to improve youth services, improve roads to all schools, protect heritage and environment and advocate for sporting clubs and schools,” she said. She is also the chair and committee member for several groups, including the Moorabool health and Wellbeing committee and the Great War Centenary Committee. “I’m the daughter of a Vietnam veteran and I have a deep respect for the Avenue of Honour and recognising those who have served in all wars and conflicts,” she said. Thieves target building sites Police are warning builders to be extra vigilant when locking up for the Christmas break following a spike in thefts from construction sites. Sergeant Andrew Button, of the Melton crime investigation unit, said many developments in the town had attracted thieves, with Melton West and Melton South, near the Waterford estate, being a hotspot for criminals who were stealing everything from kitchenware to tiles. “Some of it can be quite expensive,” Sergeant Button said. Police have arrested two men over theft from construction sites. A Melton man in his 20s has appeared in Sunshine Magistrates Court charged with theft and been released on bail. A Ballarat man in his 30s, facing the same charge, will appear in the court today to apply for bail. Sergeant Button warned neighbours and employees on construction sites to keep an eye out for anything suspicious. “If you see someone on the site you’ve never seen before and they’re dressed in a tradie outfit, keep an eye out.” Dona Homes builder Tony Ambrogio said although they’d been lucky that nothing of significant value had been stolen from their site, a set of door and furniture handles had been removed. “We dropped the handles on site and the next day they were gone,” Mr Ambrogio

said. “They were worth $1500.” He said he hadn’t reported the incident to police, but the “inconvenience” had set the builder’s work schedule back. “It’s more about the inconvenience than the monetary value. If you don’t have the stuff to do the job, it puts you behind.” Victorian WorkCover Authority construction practices manager Allan Beacom said builders and site supervisors could take simple measures to prevent unauthorised access to their sites.

The first stage of Moorabool Shire Council’s ‘Talking 2041’ community engagement program has wrapped up. More than 1000 residents completed the short postcard surveys and joined two council workshops in November. Almost 600 residents visited the council’s website to find out more about the campaign. Mayor Paul Tatchell said the council was “thrilled” with the level of interest and enthusiasm shown and he congratulated those who attended the workshops for helping make a difference to the future of Bacchus Marsh. “During this process we have gone out to the community, to make it as easy as possible for everyone to participate,” he said. As part of the Talking 2041 campaign, councillors also visited pupils at Pentland, Darley and Bacchus Marsh primary schools and students at Bacchus Marsh College and Bacchus Marsh Grammar School. “It was fantastic to talk to almost 400 students about their priorities for this area, [for] when they are in their late 30s and early 40s,” Cr Tatchell said. “We heard that the skate park is a local favourite, and jobs and houses are key priorities. “You can always rely on kids not to sugar-coat things. They also identified a new cemetery as a key priority, while looking in my direction,” he said, laughing. Moorabool council’s Talking 2041 campaign is set up to help identify the community’s priorities for managing the population growth,

Music to their ears Music and entertainment flowed at the Rivers to Recognition concert last weekend. The concert featured indigenous artists including Archie Roach, Radical Son, Frank Yamma, Skin Choir and Nancy Bates, and marked the launch of the Rivers to Recognition initiative. Victorians flocked to the Commonwealth Reserve in Williamstown to celebrate the culture of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. A series of community forums were held during the day to raise awareness of what recognition means, how people feel about it, and to develop an information guide for secondary schools and libraries to foster discussion. Melton mayor Sophie Ramsey said the initiative was designed to strengthen the
support for the reconciliation process in the western region. “Tens of thousands of Australians from all walks of life have already declared their support to recognise the first Australians in our founding document in the hope of creating a more united nation,” she said. “The Rivers to Recognition project is just one step in a long journey towards reconciliation, and the aim is to encourage discussion and respectful debate around the proposal to update the Constitution.” The campaign is a partnership between Hobsons Bay council, Reconciliation Victoria and the Western Region Local Government Network. Designed by architecture firm RotheLowman, the site has been transformed into a series of six residential buildings containing a mix of apartments; from interior-designed apartments, townhouses, duplexes and entry-level apartments, to suit a range of owner-occupiers and investors, as well as a high proportion of first home buyers, who took advantage of the generous first home owners grant available at the time. URBAN WETLAND AND CASCADES, CAROLINE SPRINGS Lend Lease
THE Urban Wetland and Cascades at Caroline Springs is an innovative storm water treatment solution for higher density urban environments that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. When the traditional ‘organic’ shaped wetland didn’t fully meet the objectives of the planning scheme provisions nor the urban vision of the Caroline Springs Town Centre, an alternate approach was sought. The vision for the Urban Wetland and Cascades was formulated in 2003, with Lend Lease Communities presenting a precedent setting water management system to Melbourne Water Corporation and Melton Shire Council. A formal contemporary straight-edged, geometric system with wetlands, open water ponds,
sand filters and bio-swales all linked through the pedestrian circulation system and road network was proposed. Detailed modelling determined that it would meet water quality and stormwater objectives. This innovative approach challenged stakeholders as it appeared somewhat foreign, expensive and a maintenance liability. The Urban Wetland and Cascades has cost $6.1m to construct with $3.1m reimbursed under the Stony Hills Creek Drainage Scheme. The Urban Wetland and Cascades aims to enhance the urban character of the Caroline Springs town centre and provide open space amenity to support the surrounding mix of high density apartments and townhouses. ■

Set on a 57,650 square metre site in the predominantly industrial area of Maidstone, the site itself was occupied for industrial use that was no longer required.

Along Omar Street to the west of the subject site, the land is occupied by single allotments of residential use, with their private open spaces abutting the subject site. Residential dwellings began to appear in other disused parcels of land in close proximity, but the area was still mainly industrial with several design constraints to overcome. This included Hampstead Road itself, which is very industrious and carrying heavy vehicular traffic. Nearby Crefden Street was a new council road already in place when the initial design stages began – providing a north facing frontage to the development. The introduction of a new internal road system, a major drainage reserve, open space and a park with wetlands formalised the outline of the stages that were to complement the multi residential precincts. From the outset of the development, a conscious approach was adopted to establish a residential development that would evolve in its architectural form and composition over the duration of the development. This enabled the development to be given a sense of community - via an architectural response of contemporary built forms, with various heights and materiality contributing to a skyline that would set a new preferred neighbourhood character. ■
