Nick Proffitt was only 27 when he was killed in a car accident on Anzac Day this year. The Melton man loved playing cricket, watching rugby and doing his bit for his community. So to welcome the cricket season, St Anthony’s Cricket Club, where Nick played, will host a fundraising event in honour of the young man. All money raised on the day will go to the Leukaemia Foundation. “Nick was always heavily involved with the [foundation’s] World’s Greatest Shave,” says club member Scott Agnew. “So we thought we’d do something for him at the start of the cricket season.” Members of the cricket club, Melton Country Fire Authority and Melton Rugby Club will play a cricket match next Friday. Entry to watch it will be free, but there will be plenty of chances for people to donate throughout the day. Youth refuge on the way A $1.5 million crisis response centre for young Melton people at risk of homelessness will be built over the next 18 months. Last month, Star Weekly reported on plans for such a centre at Melton, designed to give young people forced out of home a roof over their heads for up to six weeks. At the time, Hope Street Youth and Family Services chief executive Donna Bennett said while nothing had been confirmed, the organisation was in the early stages of planning. But speaking to Star Weekly last week, Hope Street’s service development manager, Mandy

Baxter, said plans had been finalised, and a $1.5 million crisis-response centre would be built by mid-2017. Ms Baxter said the agency had submitted a business case to the state government in the hope of securing operational funds while also raising money from local businesses for the building costs. Melton council community services acting general manager Michael Tudball said the council had given in-principle support to finding land for Hope Street to build the ‘first response’ youth service. “Council has authorised its chief executive to negotiate directly with Hope Street to find a

suitable temporary space for the first response youth service while funding is secured and the new accommodation and support service is built,” Mr Tudball said. A single-storey building, with seven bedrooms, ensuite bathrooms and a common lounge, will be built on 3000 square metres. Currently, there are no emergency refuges for young people who find themselves homeless. “Generally, a lot of young people tell us they are couch-surfing, either staying with extended family or friends,” Ms Baxter said. “Or they’re leaving the area and seeking support in other youth emergency accommodation sites.

“If young people are supported to remain connected to their family, school and education, which they’re already doing at Melton … the success rate of coming out of that homelessness situation remarkably improves,” Ms Baxter said. Recent Australian Bureau of Statistics data indicates a 30 per cent increase in youth homelessness in Melton in the five years to 2011. And 285 young Melton residents presented as homeless in the 2013-14 financial year, seeking help from Hope Street. While there was no homelessness “crisis” in Melton, Ms Baxter said agencies were worried these numbers would continue to rise.

Apple FM will host its 30th anniversary bash on October 24 at St Bernard’s Hall and wants the community to join the celebrations. Apple FM president Mark Philip recalls the station beginning with four people who wanted to start up a community radio program. “A temporary licence allowed them to broadcast for maybe 10 hours a week and then it led to a full licence,” he said. Mr Philip said Apple FM’s programs focused

on local people. “We do human interest stories and volunteer groups can also use us as a medium to publicise their events. We’re not here to promote big business.” More than 50 members and volunteers produce programs on music, culture, sport, health and wellbeing, and religion. “We’re right behind youth in the community and we have 15-to-17-year-olds on air,” Mr Philip said. “When they finish here they don’t have any trouble communicating. We’re very youth-oriented because that’s the future of our station.

The Country Fire Authority, Victoria’s Environment Protection Authority and Worksafe will go under the microscope as the state government’s inquiry into Fiskville extends into next year. The Fiskville firefighters’ training base was closed in March because of chemical contamination linked to health complaints by residents and former CFA employees. An independent report, released in June, urged the government to thoroughly test nearby land and livestock for exposure to the chemical PFOS used for firefighting. Hearings will continue until March 31. Chairwoman of the State Parliament’s Environment and Natural Resources Committee Bronwyn Halfpenny said the investigation was ongoing and would inform the next phase of the committee’s inquiry. “Since tabling its interim report, the committee has reviewed extensive documents and material to assist its understanding of what happened at Fiskville,” she said. “Critical questions are emerging that the committee wants to put to key organisations, which include … the CFA, the EPA and WorkSafe.” Further hearings start on October 19 and continue into November and early December. “The committee will start by hearing from key experts with knowledge about toxic chemicals and hazardous materials to increase our understanding of the health effects of the pollutants people at Fiskville have been exposed to and their effects on the environment,” Ms Halfpenny said. Car theft fuelling parts market By Sumeyya Ilanbey More than 320 cars were stolen at Melton in the past financial year – a trend that’s worrying experts and police. The National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council has found cars in the north-west are prime targets for thieves, with seven of the top 10 hotspots to be found in the city’s north and west. About 120 of the cars stolen from Melton were never recovered. Council’s executive director, Ray Carol, said

one of the reasons for the area’s high rate of car thefts was its demographic. “Cars are an integral part of antisocial behaviour, whether it’s to go and commit another crime, drug dealing or the boredom factor,� Mr Carol said. “Thieves are generally familiar to the area. The cars are very often recovered not that far from where they’re stolen – usually within a five-kilometre radius.� The most common makes of cars stolen were Holden Commodores (45) followed by Nissan Pulsars (17). Mr Carol said there was a lucrative black

market for car parts, especially from Holden Commodores, as people looked for cheap parts after damaging their own cars during hoonstyle behaviours. “If you’re a 20-year-old who goes out hooning in your own car and causing damage you do want very cheap parts.� Mr Carol said he didn’t believe there was an organised gang culture in the area, but, typically, young males liked to “associate� and compete with each other. Children as young as 13 have been charged with criminal offences, including stealing

cars, in Victoria, Mr Carol said. “They’re not organised; they’re very loose associations. There are mates and there are more mates, and there’s another group of mates, so it all becomes really fluid. It’s more about risk-taking – as far as they’re concerned, they’re invisible.� Detective Acting Sergeant Paul Barrow, of the Melton Criminal Investigation Unit, urged people to park in well-lit areas, and he said police were patrolling the streets. Some stolen cars were taken to be re-sold or ‘re-birthed’, while others were taken on joyrides.

An online petition urging the state government to invest in more women’s refuges in the western suburbs has attracted only 17 signatures in a month. The Zonta Club of Melton, which launched the petition and works to empower victims of domestic violence, has called on the government to immediately fund more transition places in the west. Club president Dawn Clark says it’s imperative that women and children fleeing violence have access to safe accommodation. “In the west, we have only one refuge – and that’s not fair because we have a huge percentage of domestic violence cases here,� Ms Clark said. “We’re very hopeful change is coming, but I’m asking the state government to get serious about providing extra funding.� Ms Clark, who suffered at the hands of her husband, says she believes society’s attitudes

towards domestic violence are changing. At 16, she married a man who was “very abusive and under the influence of alcohol�. At age 22 – now 40 years ago – she finally plucked up the courage to ask for help. “I had to beg on my knees at a Melbourne police station to get help. The officers told me I had to be willing to press charges,� Ms Clark said. “But now [domestic violence] is a criminal offence; it’s a huge step forward. “And I know the Melton police are fantastic.� Ms Clark called on more people to “sign� the online petition and show their support to the campaign for more refuges. Out of Somalia: a rare biography Abdi Aden was only 13 when the civil war broke out in Somalia. At 15, he fled. Mr Aden never spoke about the tragedies he witnessed en route to Australia, where he arrived as an asylum seeker in 1992. But the Craigieburn man recently released his debut book, Shining: The story of a lucky man, which tells his life story – even the parts he has never told his family. “There’s a few reasons why I wrote this book,” Mr Aden says. “One was to explain how refugees don’t just leave their country for no reason. “Two: not many people know about Somalia. Somalia used to be very good and had a very strong culture. And three: I wanted my family to know where I came from. It was very hard to actually do it. It wasn’t easy to talk about things happening to me. It was one of the best but hardest things I’ve done.” Mr Aden lays bare everything in his book – the pitfalls, successes, triumphs, tribulations and heartaches. But as a Somali man, he says it wasn’t easy opening up about all these. “I challenged myself as a person because, being a Somali man, we don’t talk about things that happen to us. At an Author’s Talk at Caroline Springs library next Monday, Mr Aden will share exactly what a Somali man usually doesn’t – his story.

A scathing report into Victorian prisons has found women are being incarcerated at unprecedented rates, with limited or no access to rehabilitation programs. The total number of prisoners at the state’s two women’s prisons soared by more than 46 per cent in the four years to the end of 2014, with most being held at Ravenhall’s Dame Phyllis Frost Centre. The number of female prisoners increased by almost 60 per cent in the five years from 2008-13, more than double the rate of growth in the male prison population. Ombudsman Deborah Glass criticised current and former state governments for investing too much in building prisons rather than funding rehabilitation programs. Her report found that women had limited or no access to rehabilitation programs because they were serving shorter sentences. But just a few years ago, there were no programs delivered to women to address issues associated with violent offending. “Prison is a temporary solution – more than 99 per cent of the prisoners will be released. Victoria needs to ensure their rehabilitation and reintegration, to improve public safety and get better value for the $1 billion annual spend,” Ms Glass said. “Building prisons is demonstrably not making us safer as a community.” Ms Glass made 25 recommendations to the government, including giving women prisoners a similar service to that available at the Judy Lazarus Transition Centre. This centre houses 25 low-risk males taking part in a program to improve their employability, develop life skills, and re-establish community connections. The state government has, in principle, supported the report’s recommendations.

SES wins right to warn volunteers By Sumeyya Ilanbey The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal has dismissed a case that sought a review of Bacchus Marsh State Emergency Service’s decision to “warn” four volunteers following behaviour that “required preventative action”. Last year, the Bacchus Marsh SES unit conducted a preliminary investigation into the behaviour of Raymond, Daniel and Paul Chapman, and Brendan Bennett. The investigation found while some of the concerns raised about the four volunteers were

minor, others were more significant, including driving an SES vehicle after consuming alcohol, falsifying incident records, not following the directions of leaders, and “demonstrating a lack of integrity or honesty”. A letter handed to the four volunteers on January 12 this year asked all four to return equipment to the SES regional offices and “cease attending the Bacchus Marsh unit until such time as the organisation decides the risks to health and safety are eliminated or minimised”. While the Chapmans and Mr Bennett did not dispute the findings against them, they

asked VCAT to review the decision made by the SES, which they said had suspended them without giving notice or reasons, in writing, 21 days after the hearing – a requirement under SES regulation 18. Handing down VCAT’s decision this month, member Anna Dea said there were no reviewable decisions before the tribunal, and their letters “contained only a warning and not a suspension”. “Even if I accept that [SES mid-region] assistant chief officer [Stephen] Warren and others used the term ‘suspension’ when speaking with the applicants and others, that

does not of itself mean the actions taken fall within regulation 18,” Ms Dea said. She said while there was a “lack of clarity” about why action was taken, she was confident the investigation by the SES, and the outcomes of the preliminary investigation set out in the letter handed to the members on January 12, were preliminary. “It is clear that, at the time the investigation commenced … assistant chief officer Warren and [Human Resources director] Katrina Bahen had in mind concerns about providing a safe place in which the leadership and members could operate,” Ms Dea said.

Even if Stacey Stewart had to crawl the last 100 metres, she was determined to finish the 35-kilometre walk she took on in support of her three-year-old cousin. The Bacchus Marsh woman and 13 family members donned sneakers earlier this month to take part in The Bloody Long Walk for Aidan, who has mitochondrial disease. The disease damages cells of the brain, heart, liver, skeletal muscles, kidney and respiratory systems. The team, dubbed Aidan’s Engine, started at Yarra Bend Park and finished at Brighton Beach eight hours later. “I saw the Walk on Facebook and asked if anyone was interested in doing it with me – I didn’t even know it was to raise funds for the disease Aidan had,” Ms Stewart said. “I’m not a fit person, but I was so pumped … I got there in a lot of pain, but I ran across the finish line.”

Diabetes hitting hard in west By Sumeyya Ilanbey Rockbank and Plumpton residents have one of the highest rates of diabetes in the state. Almost 10 per cent of people living in the 3335 postcode are diabetic, compared to the national average of 4.9 per cent. The only metropolitan Melbourne suburb ranking higher was Laverton North, at 12.5 per cent. Earlier this month, Diabetes Victoria mapped the prevalence of types 1 and 2 diabetes across the nation. The map ranked Melton municipality, not including its eastern

corridor, as “high”, with more than six per cent of the population reporting as diabetic. About five per cent of the people living in postcode 3023, which includes Burnside, Caroline Springs and Ravenhall, and code 3037, including Hillside and Taylors Hill, were diabetes sufferers. Diabetes Victoria chief executive Craig Bennett said the data showed the extent of the challenge diabetes posed around the state. “Diabetes is a major health challenge confronting Victoria and, unless we act, it could threaten the long-term viability of our health system,” Mr Bennett said.

“When it comes to diabetes, no-one is winning. In the past year, more than 27,000 Victorians were diagnosed with diabetes and we know, from an audit published last year in the Medical Journal of Australia, that at least one in four public hospital beds are occupied by people with diabetes or related complications.” While there was no definite link to the prevalence of type 2 diabetes and socio-economic disadvantage, Mr Bennett said they were associated. Income levels, education and access to public health services were all factors to consider. Mr Bennett encouraged

people to eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, and to exercise regularly. Diabetes educator Sheree Rennie, who runs clinics at Bacchus Marsh and Melton, said she had noticed a rapid increase in type 2 diabetes in the west, possibly due to rapid population growth. “Migration is quite high and people from certain countries – people with Chinese, European and Indian backgrounds – are at higher risk of getting diabetes.” She urged people with a family history of diabetes to get routine checks and familiarise themselves with diabetes support groups.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Fervent foodie Kenny Weir revisits a Mexican adventure in the heart of Yarraville It’s been six months since Consider The Sauce’s first visit to the then newly opened Village Cantina at Yarraville. I’m happy to return, especially as my son, Bennie, has yet to do so and it fits right in with our mid-week nothing-planned-fordinner situation. Village Cantina has become a firm favourite among locals with a warm, welcoming vibe. Without intending to make a direct comparison to that first visit, we end up ordering two items we also had on that occasion – and it’s something of a revelation. First though, we start with “street-style chargrilled corn” with chipotle mayo, queso fresco and lime ($5). Our single serve, cut in two, lasts all of about five seconds. It’s yummy but oh, so very small! Bennie’s beef burrito ($14) is a big step-up from the same item ordered by me on that initial visit. This dish is much more deftly done, with none of the solid, if enjoyable, stodginess I experienced. The filling has very nice shredded beef and there’s salsa, sour cream and guacamole on the side. But the real eye-opener is the nachos ($13). I’m not sure why I order this as nachos can so often veer between acceptable bar/snack food for sharing and a gloopy, unappetising

There’s so much of it – and its tastes so good – I’m happy to fully share with Bennie once he’s done with his burrito. Heck, it’d make a fine light meal for two! The opening of Village Cantina is part of an explosion of openings and refurbishments that have taken place at Yarraville village in the past six months or so. These have included the re-opening of the corner pub under its original name, the Railway Hotel, and the opening of a branch of the popular Middle Eastern-style Seddon eatery, Advieh. Well, the Golden Fleece Hotel aims to re-create this setting by offering patrons a special heritage menu (damper included, but no possum), taking diners back to the mid-1800s. Recently renovated, the Golden Fleece Hotel opened in 1865 and this year celebrates its 150th birthday. Care counts in communities September is Dementia Awareness Month, and this year’s theme is: Creating a Dementia Friendly Nation. The goal is to raise awareness of the disease and boost understanding of what it is like for a person to live with dementia, as well as encouraging communities to support those suffering from the disease. SPORT Bloods prepare for new recruits By Liam Twomey Melton is in a strong position to make a splash this Ballarat Football League off-season. Bloods coach Brad Murphy confirms his club has the funds, and room under the upcoming player points cap, to be able to sign a number of new additions. Melton played most of the 2015 season with a team that would have averaged 30 points under the proposed new system, which comes into force in 2016. And with the cap expected to be 45 points, that would allow the Bloods 15 points for new recruits. Murphy said negotiations with possible players had already started. “We’re looking at a few options,” he said. “The AFL experience can be important but [such players] also come with six points hanging over their head. “We’re more looking at a couple of VFL

guys and a couple of other really good locals.” With Melton having one of the youngest sides in the competition in the 2015 season, the Bloods are adamant they are looking for a certain type of recruit. The club wants players who can assist with on-field leadership and have the experience to help Melton’s young players make the jump from promising juniors to regular senior footballers. The lack of experience was highlighted this season with the Bloods dropping away after a positive start to fall out of finals contention by the middle of the year. But at its best the club could match it with some of the quality sides in the BFL. It lost to Bacchus Marsh by a point and pushed finals side East Point to the brink of defeat late in the season. While the senior team failed to live up to expectations, it was a great year for the club’s reserves and under-18s.

Both qualified for grand finals before coming up short against Redan and East Point respectively. From those sides, Murphy expects between six and eight players to be regular senior players next season. Meanwhile, after stepping down as head coach during the year but then changing his mind and re-signing with the Bloods two weeks later, Murphy says he’s now keen to stay at the club for as long as possible. “I think it will be my last year playing,” he said. “I want to coach the club for as long as possible. “I also have the desire to coach at TAC Cup or VFL level, but at the moment I’m very happy.” Brad Murphy is ready for a big off-season at Melton. Lakers find a ‘perfect fit’ in new coach

Future, clubhouse brighter for bowlers The Victorian pennant bowls season hasn’t even started, but Melton is already celebrating a big win. Melton Bowls Club has undergone a makeover in the off-season giving it top-of-the-range facilities after spending decades in a sub-standard clubhouse built in the 1980s. A new 45-square extension includes a new kitchen and flooring, and a paint job. Club secretary John Adams says the upgrade is a huge boost for the club as it looks to continue its rise through the ranks of the pennant

bowls competition. Having crossed over from the Macedon Ranges Bowls competition five years ago, Melton’s top side has climbed from division 3 to division 1. All other teams throughout the club have also been promoted. After its division 1 side made the finals last year, Melton moved quickly to build on the momentum by adding 15 players in the off-season. “Every division will be stronger because of the guys we’ve picked up,” Adams said. “That means three or four have filtered down

into the other divisions and made them really strong. “It will strengthen up each division along the line, so the club is really looking forward to a good year.” Melton will take on some of the western suburbs’ premier bowls clubs this year, with matches against the likes of Deer Park and Altona locked in for early in the new season. The club’s round one match will be against Glenroy.

Scott Korczynski will coach Western Region Football League club Caroline Springs next season. The Lakers made the announcement last week, with Korczynski getting the nod from a coaching selection panel that included two-time Hawthorn premiership player and Norm Smith medallist Brian Lake. Korczynski brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having previously enrolled in a range of football levels. He has worked with TAC Cup representative side Western Jets and coached at VFL club Werribee. More recently, he helped establish the Lakeview College AFL academy program, which a number of the Caroline Springs juniors have attended. Six members of the academy played at Western Jets this year, including captain Jaycob Hickey. With that sort of grounding, Lakers football manager Marc Raak said Korczynski was the perfect fit. “From the very first interview, it was clear Scott had the structures and game plan that would fill our key selection criteria,” Raak said. “After the second interview, the coaching selection panel unanimously recommended Scott for the position of senior coach. “The executive committee then endorsed their recommendation after meeting him.” Korczynski’s first order of business will be to try to lift the fortunes of the Caroline Springs club into the division 2 finals series next season. Lions hit restart button By Liam Twomey A new era is about to start at Melton Cricket Club with the Victorian Sub-District outfit having farewelled six players – along with a stack of talent and leadership – from last season’s first XI. The Lions have lost former competition best-and-fairest winner Michael Allen to Oakleigh, his brother Nathan to Yarraville, and Thomas Rogers, Nathan Geisler, Steve Buhagiar and Waddington Mwayenga. But rather than be daunted, new Lions coach Michael Alexander is excited about the new opportunities presented. The Lions chose not to recruit in the off-season, instead throwing their support behind a host of talented youngsters who have previously been forced to do their time in the seconds and thirds. “There has been a real focus on youth, a focus on development and a bit of a change in game plan as well,” Alexander said. “We haven’t gone after anyone. We’ve had a pretty strong group coming through who haven’t had much opportunity. Now’s our time to give them the chance at that higher level.” To help fill the leadership void, Alexander is looking to some of his remaining senior faces. Top-order batsman David Kirk enjoyed an outstanding 2014-15 season, blasting 373 runs . And opening bowler Brad Jones will be looking to replicate his previous season when he claimed 37 wickets and a place in the VSDCA team of the year. “It’s a good opportunity for these guys who have been at Melton for a long time but haven’t had leadership roles,” Alexander said. Melton will begin its 2015-16 campaign against Moorabbin. Its first home game is against Caulfield in round three.
