Hospital will stay, and grow Maternity services at Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital will continue and be expanded as the two towns grow. The Health Department’s service performance and programs deputy secretary Frances Diver last week quashed rumours that the state government planned to pull the plug on the beleaguered Bacchus Marsh hospital, amid investigations into the deaths of seven newborns in 2013 and 2014. “There are absolutely no plans to close the hospital in Bacchus Marsh,” Ms Diver said. “To meet the needs of the broader community growing in Bacchus Marsh and Melton, we need to grow services – both hospital-based and community-based. “So my expectation is that services will grow across both towns.” Speaking at last week’s annual meeting of Djerriwarrh Health Services, which runs the hospital, Dr John Ballard “sincerely apologised” to the women and their families who had lost babies in “avoidable” circumstances. Dr Ballard, who was appointed hospital administrator after its board was sacked last month, sought to reassure people that “necessary provisions” had been put in place to ensure the safety of maternity services. Djerriwarrh Health Services implemented six of Professor Euan Wallace’s recommendations after his investigation into the hospital’s maternity services earlier this year. Another four recommendations are still being introduced.

Dr Ballard said the health service had new clinical governance systems, extra support and training for staff, and new resources, including centralised fetal monitoring systems as recommended by Professor Wallace. “Sound clinical governance is the basis for safe, quality care,” Dr Ballard said.

“Deficits in clinical governance are a key contributor to what occurred in maternity services at the hospital here in Bacchus Marsh. “There is no one person who is the common denominator in all of these cases. “Blaming anyone or anything will not change the past; we must focus on the future by addressing the systemic issues at Djerriwarrh.” Djerriwarrh Health Services chief executive Andrew Freeman said patient numbers at the hospital’s maternity ward had decreased, but the hospital was committed to restoring community trust. “We’ve gone through an awfully, awfully difficult period … and we need to gain the trust of the community again,” he said. He said, a new quality and safety committee will report back to the board in a bid to “increase accountability and transparency”.

New funds for auto transition Melton businesses can apply for grants of up to $2 million as part of the state government’s plan to get Victoria’s west – badly hit by the closure of car manufacturing – back on its feet. As part of the state government’s $46.5 million ‘Towards Future Industries: Victoria’s Automotive Transition Plan’, the local industry fund will support job-creating projects in the city’s north, west, south-east and Geelong. The government said it would also give $5 million to an automotive supply chain transition program to help businesses continue operating or tap into new markets. And businesses employing retrenched automotive workers will receive up to $7000 as an incentive, with an additional $4000 available for retraining. Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce executive director Geoff Gwilym welcomed the government’s holistic approach, especially its focus on automotive supply chain businesses. “Many of these businesses have some tough times ahead once the factories close down, but many others are looking at these closures as an opportunity,” Mr Gwilym said. In recent years, Holden, Toyota and Ford, all strong, long-term employers in Melbourne’s west and north, have announced permanent closures. Mr Gwilym said many automotive supply chain businesses had shifted to supply other automotive manufacturers, while others had gone to entirely different sectors, including medical technology, food and construction.

Emily battles back from the brink Call it motherly instinct or intuition, but Karen Walsh knew something was wrong. The Melton mum noticed a “glow” in the eye of her daughter, Emily, although nobody else could see it. “Then one night my sister noticed Emily’s eye looked a little ‘funky’,” Ms Walsh said. The next day, four-year-old Emily was rushed to the optometrist, where Amy Giang did some tests, took photos and noticed a “large white mass” on the retina at the back of Emily’s eye. Ms Walsh knew it was serious.

Alliance aims to redesign pokies By Sumeyya Ilanbey Regulating the design of electronic gaming machines will significantly reduce gambling problems in Melbourne’s west, according to the LeadWest agency. The advocacy organisation last month signed on to an Alliance for Gambling Reform, calling on the federal government to “tackle one of Australia’s biggest causes of inequality and hardship”. Each month Melton punters lose millions of dollars on electronic gaming machines, the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation reports. In the first four months of this financial year, Melton punters poured $22 million into gaming machines. And, according to the regulatory body, gaming machines at WestWater in Caroline Springs reaped almost $12 million in the past financial year, followed closely by Mac’s Hotel on High Street ($11 million). LeadWest chief executive Craig Rowley said the group was committed to lobbying for gambling and gaming machine reform in Melbourne’s west, where there is a disproportionately higher number of losses. “The odds of winning are stacked against the players,” Mr Rowley said. “We’re signalling strongly that we want to see government act and regulate the designs of the machines.” Electronic gaming machines are “designed to get under your skin and into your brain”, the Alliance for Gambling Reform states. Mr Rowley said thousands of families in

The machines were “loaded against the user”, Mr Rowley said. “Unless there are changes to the nature of the way these machines are designed, gambling will continue as an issue into the future.” Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Moonee Valley and Maribyrnong councils in Melbourne’s west have all joined the Alliance for Gambling Reform. A Melton council spokeswoman said: “At this stage, Melton council has not signed on as we are currently developing a Gaming Local Planning Policy.”

No holiday for thieves Lock up or lose it – that’s the warning from Melton police in the lead-up to Christmas. Senior Constable Donna Coutts said police invariably noticed a spike in burglaries and thefts in holiday periods. “Most burglaries occur on residential properties, but there’s an alarming amount of burglaries occurring in premises under construction and commercial businesses,” she said. “The overwhelming message is to make sure your motor vehicles and properties are locked at all times and secure your valuables in a safe or hidden place.” She said that while many tradies were doing the right thing and removing their tools when leaving construction sites, they were then

leaving them unlocked in their utes when they arrived home. “They need to keep their tools locked up and put in garages,” she said. Senior Constable Coutts said many stolen tools were probably sold on the black market. “We go to second-hand dealers to see if stolen tools have been traded in, but we don’t find them there,” she said. “The people who steal the tools will offer them to other tradies for cheap.” Senior Constable Coutts said crime victims should always call police. “No crime is too small to report”. Melton kicks rent stress trend By Sumeyya Ilanbey Rents at Melton and Melton South are among the most affordable in the state for low-income earners, a new report has found. The National Shelter’s Rental Affordability Index report found renters at Caldermeade, in the city’s south-east, Melton South, Melton, Albion and Seville East, north-east of Melbourne, spent on average less than 20 per cent of their income on rent. Households paying 30 per cent or more of their income on rent are generally viewed as living in housing stress.

National Shelter is an advocacy group whose mission is to create a “more just housing system”, particularly for low-income Australians. The group said it was “frustrated” by the media and politicians, particularly their “obsession with [home buyers’] markets and a lack of attention to the severe housing stress experienced by Australians who are renting”. The National Shelter report analysed the rental markets of all cities nationwide. It found Bateman, 14 kilometres from Perth’s CBD, to be the most affordable, with renters averaging just 12 per cent of their incomes on rent.

“For some time, the discussion on housing affordability in Australia has focused on the increasing cost of purchasing a home,” the report states. “Importantly, focusing on housing affordability through the lens of home ownership does not provide insight into the households that are struggling with housing affordability most – those in the rental market.” Low-income earners struggling to pay their rent also face the prospect of being unable to pay for other primary needs, including food, water, electricity, health services, transport and education.

The report found financial stress could result in mental health issues, poorer education outcomes, lower confidence, and “diminished career outlooks”. National Shelter said there were real concerns about growing numbers of people with “very little” disposable income after paying rent. “An inability to acquire household goods, access services when needed and pay off debts may result in households becoming trapped in a debt spiral. “This is creating a divide in our cities between where the opportunities exist and where households are located,” the report found.

Green scene delights A drab school corner has been transformed into a colourful space full of edible delights for Melton Specialist School students. Thanks to a $900 grant from Western Water, the creativity of projects officer Breeanna Guardabascio and the work of students, a vertical garden made of pipes and filled with herbs and vegies has been installed. Ms Guardabascio said the students were excited when the garden finally came to life a few weeks ago. “It’s a sensory, friendly place for them. Basically, it means kids can touch the plants, smell them and look at the different colours,” she said. “The students can interact with something that suits them. “And it offers an alternative for the kids who want to take a break – they can go into that area to calm down.”

The grade 2 pupils are responsible for looking after the plants, while the rest of the school will use the herbs and plants in their food technology classes. “Students can see how things grow, how they change what a plant needs to survive and where they can use them,” Ms Guardabascio said. “The garden adds another dimension to the kids’ learning. Sunday runs take off More than 80 Melton folk meet at the Toolern Creek early on Saturday mornings for some fun in the sun. The Toolern Creek park runs were started earlier this year in a bid to get the town healthy, up and running. And, according to event director Mark Porritt, it’s been a success. “Melton doesn’t really have a running background so it’s been great to see so many recreational runners coming out on Saturday mornings,” Mr Porritt said. “The people have really embraced it.”

Media Release Victoria Police will be conducting Operation Roadwise during the 2015 Christmas/New Year Holiday period from Sunday 13 December 2015 to Sunday 3 January 2016 to reduce road trauma over this high risk period.

Road Policing Advisor Senior Sergeant Ross Burbidge said during this Road Policing Operation, Victoria Police will implement a strategically co-ordinated and tactically focused approach to Road Policing targeting the key contributing factors to road trauma being Speed, Alcohol and Drug Impairment, Mobile Phones, Fatigue and Seatbelts.

Mr Giddings said the work of his group along with initiatives like the Operation Roadwise during the 2015 Christmas/New Year Holiday period would hopefully reduce the number of serious road crashes on our roads.

Police will be targeting drivers who attend the end of year work functions as it has been identified that there is a risk that some drivers will take risks whilst they are impaired by alcohol and drugs. Motorists will see numerous Police units in marked and unmarked vehicles targeting our major arterial roads during this holiday period. Speed Camera will be set up in identified speed and high collision locations throughout the State. Drivers planning to travel during this period can expect to see an increase in vehicles travelling on our major Freeways and Highways. Drivers are requested to plan their trip, be patient and ensure that they have frequent breaks when driving long distances. Road trauma isn’t just about the people who die – it’s about the enormous impact on the community, from the family members, to the emergency services workers who have to deal with these tragedies on a daily basis, to the police who have to deliver the devastating news to loved ones.

Witnesses said they heard a “loud bang” before seeing a fire, which spread through creekside foliage and travelled about 500 metres. Three youths were seen running from the scene behind Mimosa Way. Police said the fire came close to houses and had the potential for “disastrous” consequences. Pathways push gathers force A proposed off-road shared trail along the Western Freeway from Melton to Caroline Springs is one of the top priorities of a multicouncil strategy to improve pathways in the west. With input from Melton, Wyndham, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong councils, the western metropolitan region trails strategic plan seeks to improve the connectivity, quality and use of regional trails in Melbourne’s west over the next decade. The plan noted that the west had “an incomplete network … [with] gaps in otherwise extensive trails, as well as trails that stop short of logical destinations or connections”. It outlines a proposed Western Freeway Trail which will provide a direct link from the Melton township to Caroline Springs, while connecting to a number of other regional trails within the network. “Due to the direct nature of the trail, it will offer an excellent commuter cycling corridor towards the more urban areas of the western metropolitan region,” the plan states. “The trail could create the first trail link to metropolitan Melbourne for the residents of the Melton township, including links to other population centres in the west and via other regional trails all the way to central Melbourne.” But funding could potentially be a

“significant issue” due to the length of the trail [about 16 kilometres]. The plan states the trail works would most likely be achieved as part of future upgrades to the Western Freeway.

“There are also a number of major intersections along the proposed alignment where implementing a well-integrated crossing could pose a potential issue,” the plan states. “Negotiations between additional stakeholders in regards to design, funding and construction of the path also has the potential to slow the progress on the implementation.” According to the plan, there are long-term plans to upgrade the freeway to improve safety and meet future needs of a growing population. If created, the Western Freeway trail will link the outer western growth areas with the inner suburbs, most likely appealing to commuters riding along the Toolern Creek Trail to the Wellness Trail. The plan also found Taylors Hill was one of the worst-serviced areas by existing or proposed regional trails.

Twenty golden years Lorelle Anderson and Robin Barber have greeted thousands of patrons walking through the doors of the Melton Country Club. Their hard work, dedication and commitment to the club has seen the women form countless memories, which often leave them giggling when recalled. Last month, Ms Anderson and Ms Barber celebrated their 20th anniversary at the club. “The club has treated us so well and they’ve always been very supportive,” Ms Anderson says. While countless staff members have come and gone, Ms Anderson says she has no plans of retiring any time soon.

“The morale is very strong here; we welcome people as if they’re our family and that’s what keeps us strong and why we’re still here.” The women say they should have written a book about all the things they’ve seen and heard. “I work at the front reception so I get to talk to a lot of people,” Ms Barber says. “And they tell me all their stories, which I just love listening to.” And despite all the highs and lows, Ms Barber says there is “nothing I would change”. MY PLACE For as long as she can remember, 22-year-old Ebony Miles has been playing tennis. The Exford woman was recently crowned ‘rookie coach of the year’ at a Tennis Australia ceremony. She speaks to Sumeyya Ilanbey. How do you feel about being announced as rookie coach of the year? I feel very honoured and humbled about it. I wasn’t expecting it but it feels very good. How long have you been playing tennis? And where did the passion stem from? I’ve been playing for probably 17 years. Both my parents played it, my grandparents played and I have a sister who plays tennis. I guess playing with them and the fact they always took an interest – they always came and watched me. I have a bit of memories about playing tennis with my family when I was younger. When I used to go to my grandparents’ house, grandpa and I would have a bit of a hit.

Do you think Melton really appreciates the sport of tennis? Yeah, I did feel supported growing up. We’d [at Melton South Tennis Club] play against different clubs, we’d go up to the Australian Open in January and all the clubs used to get together. What can be done to improve the tennis culture in Melton? I think we need some more courts and that kind of stuff, and we also need some facilities to be upgraded. A lot of people want to just go down to the courts and have a hit, but there are

Who are your biggest inspirations in the tennis world and why? Martina Hingis. I find everything about her very inspirational – the way she carries herself, plays tennis.

A spot of recognition Almost two decades ago, Dr Mark Robson and George Marshall embarked on a journey to help ease the pain of cancer sufferers in Melton. They wanted to create a space where people living with, recovering from, or caring for someone with cancer, could come for social and emotional support. Last Tuesday, the Melton Cancer Support Group placed memorial plaques in honour of the group’s first members – George and Barbara Marshall, Doug Henderson, Rose Russo and Jeanette Gowans. Group secretary Glenyse Stubbs said they helped people touched by cancer “regain a sense of control” over their lives. The group

also connects members to appropriate services in the community. “Battling cancer can be a long and lonely road, but in Melton there are plenty of survivors, carers and fighters offering a shoulder to lean on,” Ms Stubbs said. “The group caters for people with all concerns, to help them get back into the world, instead of shutting themselves away.” The group meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 10.30am at Melton Health, 195 Barries Road, Melton West. SPORT Bloods struggle in battle of the bucks It has been a case of close but no cigar for Melton in the Ballarat Football League off-season. The Bloods went into the break happy with their young and middle tier players but with the goal of recruiting a big fish from the AFL for the 2016 season. Melton head coach Brad Murphy has been working the phones and organising meetings for the past few months but the Bloods haven’t been able to land that elusive signature yet. “We have spoken to probably 50 people and I think we have met 20,” Murphy said. “We have been in the final two clubs for the potential recruit but they have signed somewhere else.

“It has just been a nightmare. We can’t compete financially with some of the offers that other clubs are giving these players. We just can’t afford what the Essendon District or Western Region clubs are spending.” It hasn’t been all bad news for the Bloods, who have been able to sign former VFL player Jack Walker. Walker has spent the past four years at Williamstown and is a development league premiership player at the Seagulls. “Jack is a hard-running midfielder who I rate very highly,” Murphy said. Next season will be Murphy’s third in charge at the Bloods.

After joining the club as a playing coach, the 31-year-old may be forced to spend 2016 on the sidelines because of constant injuries. Murphy said he hadn’t made a final decision on his playing future yet. “I haven’t run for 16 weeks,” he said. “I am struggling a little bit. “I’ve tried to give myself a good break until Christmas … if my body isn’t up to it then my body isn’t up to it. “At this stage, I want to play and play as a permanent forward. It will be 50-50 at best for me going into next year.” Liam Twomey

Melton Hull-bent on flag By Liam Twomey Renee Hulls has wasted no time making an impact at the Melton Netball Club. Hulls was appointed to the head coaching role in the off-season, with the Bloods beginning pre-season training in early November. The tough regime is all geared around a climb back up the ladder. In 2014, Melton won the Ballarat Netball League premiership, defeating Sunbury by 15 goals in the biggest game of the year. But 2015 was tough for the Bloods, who missed out on finals and finished eighth. “We have been hitting the track pretty hard already and have spent the past five weeks training,” Hulls said. “From day one I went through what I expect. I want to help the girls learn and take their netball to the next level.”

Hulls comes to Melton following a decorated career. She spent the past four years as a player and coach at the Melton Centrals, helping the club win the Riddell District Netball League premiership in 2014. She has also been a coach at interleague, state and national level. After the 2015 season, Hulls secured an assistant coaching role with the Ballarat Sovereigns in the Victorian Netball League. As part of her work with the Sovereigns, she decided a move to a BNL-based local club would allow her to get the most out of both roles. “It was a tough decision to leave Centrals after achieving so much success with the club,” Hulls said. “We won a premiership and I won a Ryan Medal (league best and fairest) with Centrals.

“I have a lot of respect for coach Randy Pereira and everyone at the club. I have my fingers crossed that the club will continue to grow and go forward.” Melton players will continue to train in the lead-up to Christmas before taking a break throughout January. The Bloods are likely to find out their opening-round opponent next week, with the BNL preparing to release its 2016 fixture. Regardless of the draw, Hulls believes there are no limits to what her side can achieve. “I’d love to be able to win a premiership with Melton,” Hulls said. “I know they won a premiership a couple of years ago and I’d love to be a part of that as a player-coach. “It is also about pushing forward some of our juniors to get them that finals experience which will really help their development.”

After falling two runs short of victory in last year’s Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s premier T20 grand final, Riddell was desperate to avoid a repeat. Facing Sunbury United on Tuesday night in the grand final, the match came down to the final over of the night. For much of the night Riddell looked to have control – but each time United got back into the game. Batting first, United made 9-132 after some late hitting from James Hughes. Riddell skipper Heath Wadden said the key to restricting United was the wicket of Ryan Billinghurst, who made 37. “We bowled tight early and Ryan was the one we need to get out,” Wadden said. “Once we got a couple of quick wickets including him, we were on track. They then got some late runs to push the score up.” Riddell was cruising at 2-72 at the halfway mark of its innings. “Cameron Moran had knuckled down and he did the job,” Wadden said. “We got a good start and then flat-lined. We needed eight to nine runs an over the last few overs.” Wadden hit the winning runs with three balls remaining, Riddell finishing with 7-133. Ashfield enhanced its reputation as one of the GDCA’s best T20 sides by winning its second district division premiership in three years. Having won 10 of its past 11 games entering Tuesday night’s match against Lancefield, Ashfield was favoured to pick up another title. Electing to bat, Ashfield made the most of the conditions on its home pitch by making 7-149 off its 20 overs. Ashfield captain-coach Jason King said the side was starting to bat well at the right time of the competition. “We knew 149 was a really good score,” he said. “We were quietly confident we could get a win.” Craig Ballinger was the star with the bat for Ashfield making 60. In reply, Lancefield fell 28 runs short of victory, making 7-122. “They had a partnership in the middle of the innings but when we got two wickets in an over it turned the game our way,” Wadden said. “We didn’t bowl them out, but we did all the right things. Young stars up for a hot contest By Liam Twomey Young sports stars of the west have once again proven they have what it takes to excel. This year, 10 athletes were recognised for their outstanding sports achievements by being nominated for the Don Deeble Rising Star Award. The award is run by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club in conjunction with Star Weekly to honour young athletes in the western suburbs who have achieved exceptional results at state and national level. Each month, a nominee receives $1000 donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club and other prizes to assist in reaching their sports goals. Following the 10 monthly nominations, the grand final for the award will be held in January. All nominees from the past year are eligible to win the first prize of $5000 while two runners-up will each receive $2500.

Sunshine Western Region Sports Club vice-president Barry Watson said the nominees’ diverse range of sport would make for one of the most hotly contested finals in the award’s history. “It’s great to see so many varieties of sport resulting in so much talent at high levels,” he said. “It is no longer just footy, cricket and soccer. All sports seem to be involved, which is just great. “All the monthly winners have been closely observed by the selection committee. It is very tight and there will be a few unlucky athletes – but let’s not forget, they can all be future winners if they continue to improve.” This is the 10th year that the Yarraville Club Cricket Club has been a major sponsor of the award. In that time, Yarraville Club has donated $169,000 to past winners such as NBA player Dante Exum, Commonwealth Games

We rose to the challenge, did a full wheel realignment and problem solved. He drove away a happy man.” Daniel bought Melton Total Car Care from a long-time friend, who extracted a promise from him to pursue excellence. MOTOR Subaru twins deliver fast thrills Being a bit of a performance-car snob who raised his nose at anything with less than eight cylinders, I never really got the attraction of turbo charged “rice chariots” such as the Subaru WRX. I was an idiot. Based on the latest mode, the WRX is an incredible car that is an absolute joy to drive and fast – fully-sick fast. And while it doesn’t have that satisfying V8 roar, the turbo makes a very sweet noise when the rev counter is well into the red range. At it’s heart is a 2.0-litre turbocharged horizontally opposed boxer engine. Without getting too technical, a boxer engine has two rows of cylinders moving horizontally in opposite directions, instead of vertically, like a boxer jabbing his fists. Because it’s flatter than normal engines, it gives the car a lower centre of gravity that helps with stability and handling. This and other advances – such as all-wheel-drive and active torque vectoring, which reduces under-steer – make the WRX handle and steer beautifully, with minimal body roll despite not being a particularly low car. I was lucky enough to drive two variants of the new WRX – Standard and Premium. The Standard came with a six-speed manual gearbox that was plenty of fun. It loves high revs, preferring to sit on about 2500rpm. When you give it stick it gets to 3000rpm easily, only for the turbo to kick in like a foot up the bum.

You can get pretty fast in this thing just in second gear. The Standard includes a reverse camera and user-friendly entertainment and phone-touch screen system. The cloth seats were nice and provided great back support.

I thought I was in motoring heaven, then I picked up the WRX Premium. At first glance, I was a little disappointed that this was automatic – but this isn’t just any automatic car. It has three driving modes as part of its “Subaru Intelligent Drive”, starting

with Economy. The Sport mode lets it rev out a bit more on take off. The Sport Sharp Mode is for “maximised potential” – Subaru-speak for red-lining bonkers. In both sport modes, the car takes off as fast as the manual and gear changes are seamless at high or low speeds. If you feel like manual gear-changing, there are shift paddles on the steering wheel. It’s incredible to think there’s also the WRX STI range that takes things up another notch. Performance aside, the WRX Premium is a nice small-to-medium car. The good-looking interior includes leather seats and trim, satellite navigation, blind-spot monitors and a nifty second screen that shows what’s down the passenger side when reversing. There’s heaps of headroom at the front and two adults can sit in the back comfortably. The boot space is more than adequate and the back seats fold with a 60-40 split. Exterior looks of WRX models have been hit or miss in the past, but this one is certainly on the hit side. It looks great, particularly from the front, with elegantly shaped LED headlights and grill that are true to its lineage. The chunky air scoop on the hood looks great though it isn’t just for show – pop the bonnet after a drive and you can feel the difference in temperature from where the air is directed and the rest of the engine bay. Prices start at $43,104 for the Standard WRX and $49,196 for the Premium. This was one car I really didn’t want to give back.
