Cries for help on rise

By Sumeyya Ilanbey More than 250 calls for help came in to Women’s Health West from domestic violence victims and via police referrals in the first five days of this year.

That’s 50 calls a day and more than two calls every hour.

And Women’s Health West (WHW) family violence services manager Jacky Tucker expects the number to grow to more than 1000 police referrals and 500 women calling for help by the end of this month.

While January is the organisation’s peak month, 1500 calls would be unprecedented, putting pressure on already-stretched staff and services to keep up with demand.

Last January, the organisation received 771 police referrals and 371 calls from domestic violence victims.

“In the lead-up to Christmas, you’ve used a lot of money, the kids are around, everything’s heightened, people are together, so there’s a lot more tension,” Ms Tucker said.

“Violence … is more than likely to happen during this time of the year. It’s nearly a guarantee that perpetrators will perpetrate during Christmas.”

During December, WHW received 974 police referrals and 447 calls from women experiencing domestic violence.

Ms Tucker said the trend of increased calls and demands for services during December and January would continue.

“To even try to make a first phone call to the 974 women is extremely hard,” Ms Tucker said.

“We’re still responding to incidents from December in January.

“We’re just trying to catch up with the backlog and at least be able to speak to the women and offer them support.”

While she said increased reporting of domestic violence was a “good thing” as victims were feeling more confident to speak to authorities, Ms Tucker said it was now “evident how endemic family violence is in our community”.

There needs to be generational change, a 30-year-plan to tackle domestic violence, and more funding, Ms Tucker said.

She hopes the state government will respond quickly to the Royal Commission into Family Violence.

“And in the later stages of the bite, you might find your pet deceased. So it’s not necessarily about looking for a snake bite; it’s more about symptoms.”

Almost all of the pets treated by the Melton Vet Clinic were “small, inquisitive dogs that stick their noses everywhere,” Ms Norton said.

Pet owners are being warned to be on the lookout for snakes, with one Melton vet reporting she has treated 15 animals bitten by snakes since the start of spring.

And the numbers are likely to increase dramatically as warm to hot weather sets in.

Melton Vet Clinic senior veterinary nurse Kim Norton said that of the 15 bites, eight had resulted in pet fatalities.

While it’s impossible to prevent snakes entering backyards, Ms Norton urged pet owners to tidy around gardens, remove junk from yards and not allow things to pile up, giving snakes shelter.

“There’s a lot of development happening and that will force the snakes into suburban areas,” Ms Norton said.

“A lot of our patients are being bitten in areas where there are waterways, such as creeks or dams running near the house.”

Melton West and Kurunjang appear to be hotspots for snake bites and activity, Ms Norton said, with most patients coming from these areas.

The clinic had treated more pets for tiger snake bites than for brown snake bites, she added. While the two are equally poisonous, tiger snakes attack an animal’s muscular system, while browns cause neurological breakdowns.

Most pets are bitten in the morning or early afternoon when snakes are out soaking in the sunshine.

But tiger snakes have been seen late at night as well.

“A couple of days ago, a gentleman called and said he had seen a tiger snake in his backyard at night,” Ms Norton said. “So they’re still active at night.”

The earlier that treatment with anti-venom drugs is started for bitten pets, the higher their chances of survival. But treatment can cost between $2000 and $5000.

Ms Norton said it was illegal to kill snakes as they were a protected species.

Police have charged nine teenagers after vandalism at several Caroline Springs childcare centres last year.

Seven males and two females, aged 16 to 18, were caught allegedly causing damage to the Penguin Childcare Centre on Sunday, December 27. The teenagers have been charged with criminal damage, burglary and theft, and will appear in court at a later date.

More than smoke ban behind riot

By Sumeyya Ilanbey Authorities should have been better prepared for a large-scale prison riot at Ravenhall’s Metropolitan Remand Centre when more than 300 prisoners armed with makeshift weapons ran “amok” on June 30 last year, an investigation has found.

The MRC “failed to monitor … and assess ongoing risk mitigation strategies” when two “passive protests” broke out on June 25 and 28 after the canteen ran out of tobacco ahead of the statewide smoking ban, the investigation

by former Victoria Police deputy commissioner Kieran Walshe found.

If a formal risk assessment had been undertaken after the first passive protest, the likelihood of further “disturbances” would have been identified and damage could have been mitigated, the Walshe report found.

“The MRC undertook a whiteboard exercise on June 27 following the first passive protest on how to manage another passive protest, including details on the possible approach if the protest became aggressive,” the report added. “The investigation was advised that this

planning did not assist much because most areas of the prison were breached.”

And while the smoking ban was “definitely the catalyst”, overcrowding and the ability to breach internal fences had escalated the riot.

Among the report’s 17 recommendations – not all of which have been made public for security reasons – are that internal fences and gates be strengthened.

Meanwhile, a “deficient” and “out-of-date” emergency management plan – which “needs to be extensively rewritten” – had seriously halted the ability of emergency services

personnel to bring the riot under control, Mr Walshe said. “[The plan] caused Corrections Victoria to focus solely on the tactical response and left attending agencies inadequately briefed on arrival, and so unable to make necessary decisions around risks, priorities and resources.”

Rampaging prisoners threw rocks at staff, rammed internal gates, broke down cell doors and lit numerous fires, while chanting “we want OX”, in reference to pouch tobacco. It was the largest prison riot in Victoria’s history and caused more than $10 million damage.

A future for the finches The diamond firetail and other vulnerable bird and animal species living around Melton are reaping the benefits of an ongoing weed and pest eradication and revegetation project.

Working with Western Water, the Pinkerton Landcare and Environment Group (PLEG) in 2011 opened a habitat corridor between Pinkerton Forest and Bush’s Paddock, known as the Pinkerton Link.

Now, the diamond firetail – a finch with a bright red bill and black wings with white spots – will get more of the habitat it needs, thanks to a recent $12,000 ‘threatened special protection initiative’ grant from the state government.

PLEG member Daryl Akers said Pinkerton Link was helping to solve the “habitat fragmentation” that native birds, animals and plants, including the diamond firetail, experienced with the spread of human populations.

“This grant will help us control weeds and

pest species, and work on revegetation to provide habitat for this beautiful little bird,” Mr Akers said.

“This work will also benefit other species in the area, such as the brown treecreeper, jacky winter and southern whiteface.”

Western Water customer and community relations general manager Graham Holt said the Pinkerton Forest area was “critical for the protection of local flora and fauna species facing loss of habitat and other threats”.

Brave plunge honoured

By Sumeyya Ilanbey Leigh Millott jumped into the water without a moment’s thought – after all, a family was caught in a rip, struggling to stay afloat.

“If it was me in that situation, or my children, I’d want others to help,” Mr Millott says.

On January 27, 2014, the Kurunjang man went to the rescue of a family of four drowning at a beach at Apollo Bay. His efforts were honoured at the Royal Humane Society of Australasia’s annual bravery award presentation last month.

“I saw the daughter trying to save the dad, but [she] couldn’t do anything and she was

starting to get pulled into the rip,” Mr Millott says. “So I got to the mother first because she was the closest, and then I went back in to get the kids.”

Mr Millott swam towards the father, who he thought was dead.

“I put him on my back and swam out of the rip … when we got back to the shore, we both just collapsed.

“I didn’t do it for the award or to be recognised – I’m just glad to know he was safe and the family was back together.”

The 31-year-old says he owes his lifesaving skills to Bear Grylls, whose documentaries he finds are “very, very useful”.

MY PLACE Edward Groot is a selfless retiree, a dedicated Bacchus Marsh resident, and one of the founders of the Marsh food bus. He speaks to Sumeyya Ilanbey about life, and volunteering.

What’s your favourite thing about living in Bacchus Marsh?

I’ve never felt sorry about the move from Sale. Bacchus Marsh is a good place – it has everything, and it’s pretty central to Geelong, Melbourne and Ballarat.

I like the community in Bacchus Marsh – there’s certainly a sense of belonging. If I compare it to Sale, where I lived for 22 or 23 years, it’s a big difference.

We’ve been accepted here; a lot of people know us and we know a lot of people.

It was definitely a good move. I don’t miss Sale at all.

Can you tell me a little bit about yourself?

I have two kids – a boy and a girl – and they’re both in their 40s, and I live at home with my wife.

My interests are woodwork, building aircraft, a bit of photography. I was an aircraft engineer before I retired.

You set up the Marsh food bus – can you tell me about that?

At that time – about three-and-a-half years ago – there was an article in the local paper about homelessness in Bacchus Marsh.

There were kids going to school without breakfast and lunch, having a sandwich for dinner, or sleeping in the car.

That prompted [me and my wife] to do something about it – I can’t give them a roof over their heads, but I can give them a meal.

We started the Marsh food bus about two years ago, and do it twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday nights.

What’s your favourite thing about volunteering?

There was a need for it in my book. After I read the article, I said ‘at least we got to do something about this’.

I cannot stop it [homelessness] of course ‌ but, in the end, it is something that exists, and we need to try and help.

If you’re in volunteering for a thank-you, you’re in the wrong game. But I do feel fulfilled, certainly, at night.

Were you aware of how widespread homelessness was prior to reading the article?

I wasn’t. It certainly opened my eyes to a new world.

Have you always had an interest in volunteering?

We used to volunteer when we first moved to Bacchus Marsh but, due to cooking the food for the bus, we’re really busy now.

We have to draw the line at volunteering somewhere.

SPORT Bowlers pull the thorn to save limping Lions After a below-par score with the bat, Melton’s bowlers took up the slack and bowled the Lions to their second win of Sub-District Cricket’s south-west competition on Saturday.

In a season of player development, the Lions have struggled to put together complete performances.

That was certainly the case against Altona.

On their home pitch, the Lions were dispatched for just 99.

Lions coach Michael Alexander said he didn’t think that would be enough against a side trying to push its way into the top six.

“It was really disappointing,” he said. “We were 0-45 and 3-80, then we collapsed and lost 7-19.

“There was some pretty poor decision-making . . . it certainly wasn’t a 99-run pitch.”

Opener Tom Button top-scored with 28 as only three Lions players reached double figures.

Alexander said the team spoke about getting early wickets in the Altona innings.

“We were confident that if we could get early wickets we could stay with them for long enough to make a match of it.

“Our boys had the belief they could do it and

get the win. In fact, Altona had only one 30-run partnership.”

It was bundled out for 86, the last four batsmen making ducks.

The Lions shared the wickets, all five bowlers snaring two apiece.

Alexander said confidence was the key to his side and its development this year.

The likes of Tom Button, Nicholas Dugdale-Walker and Jake Charge had stepped up to play roles in the senior team, the coach added.

“With young guys it’s normal that they don’t

have the experience and confidence to execute things they normally would.

“We’re building that into the team across the whole year and we’re not too far away from some of the teams being in the mix for finals.”

Despite the win, the Lions remain 12th on the ladder.

“Our expectations going into the season were pretty low,” Alexander said. “It was about developing the kids.

“A couple more wins would be nice.”

By Tara Murray A one-run win against Rupertswood has given St Anthonys the perfect opportunity to lay permanent claim to top spot in Gisborne and District Cricket Association B grade.

With five rounds remaining, St Anthonys is undefeated and 14 points clear of second-placed Rupertswood.

For coach Jamie Bolger, the aim for the rest of the season is simple.

“It was important to get the points against Rupertswood,” he said. “After beating Wallan before Christmas and now this win, we’re in a good spot.

“We set ourselves for a home final and we’ve set the platform for that to be achievable. We think we’ll see Wallan and Rupertswood in the finals.”

Scott backed up his batting by taking three wickets.

Bolger said that despite its winning record, there were areas where his team needed to improve.

“A key focus, and something we want to pride ourselves on, is bowling and fielding,” he said.

A star-studded middle order could be the key to Centrals Highlands’ chances at this week’s under-18 Victorian state cricket championships.

With an impressive mix of bowlers and allrounders to complement his batting line-up, coach Paull Jeffrey says he’s hoping to play in the finals.

Those two, along with Gisborne junior Tom Rogers are part of the Australian Cricket Pathway rookie squad.

“Certainly, the big three are the ones we think will be the leaders, but cricket is a funny game,” Jeffrey said. “You can’t make runs every time. You have to rely on the whole 13 in the squad. How everyone plays will be the difference if we make finals or not.”

Jeffrey said other players to watch included Romsey’s Matthew Milne, Bacchus Marsh’s Jack Lalor and North Ballarat’s Jakob Tidyman.

“Matthew is a leg spinner who will be an X-factor,” he said. “There aren’t too many left-arm leg-spinners around.

“Jack, a first-year player for us, has had a good lead-up with both bat and ball.

Jakob played for us last year and we’re expecting another big tournament from him.”

Jeffrey, in his 10th year as coach, said the team had been together since last October.

“We’ve had a trial game and a couple of practice matches,” he said. “We had a hit-out against the under-16 team and we come into the competition in good form.”

Predictions show that bad weather could again play a part in the team’s championship fate. Last year, the Highlanders had two games affected by rain. “This year it’s looking like it’ll be hot,” Jeffrey said. “There’s a heat policy that could come into effect later in the week. You need to make sure you win the first game … it helps set up the week.”
