Lonely pets need a home Bacchus Marsh families are being asked to open their hearts and homes to an orphaned animal this month. PetRescue will visit PETstock Bacchus Marsh this weekend to encourage families to give a rescued pet a home forever. PetRescue co-founder Vicki Davy said orphaned animals faced a grim future without adoption. “Giving an animal a new lease of life is incredibly rewarding and they’ll thank you every day with unlimited love and affection,” she said. Rider doubles speed limit Melton police have warned that speeding motorbikes are potential “weapons” after charging a motorcyclist with riding at more than 70km/h above the speed limit on Australia Day. Police impounded the motorbike and booked a Melton man, aged in his 20s, after he was clocked at 140km/h in a 70km/h zone on the Melton Highway about 2.30pm. They renewed their calls for safer driving in the wake of several fatalities across the state last week, which included two teenagers whose car plunged off the EJ Whitten bridge on Wednesday.

Sergeant Chris Stuhldreier, of the Melton highway patrol, said people underestimate the consequences of being involved in a motorbike accident. “A motorbike … weighs somewhere between 200 and 300 kilos,” he said. “That weight, travelling at that speed becomes a missile. “Driving at that speed on a motorbike means there would be almost no margin for error – if an animal was to run in front of that bike, or if the rider was struck by a bird, or if the rider was to cross a pothole … any one of those causes could be enough for him to lose control, kill himself and possibly somebody else.” The motorcyclist was among 44 drivers caught speeding on Melton roads during the Australia

Day break as part of Operation Amity. Almost 90 driving offences were recorded, including 10 unregistered vehicles, six unlicensed drivers, and three drug-affected drivers. One driver was caught above the legal alcohol limit. Sergeant Stuhldreier said his team focused largely on speed on Melton’s major freeways, highways and arterial roads. “Vehicles can become weapons considering their mass and size … and the speed you’re travelling at,” he said. “Speed limits are set by governing authorities because that’s what’s deemed to be relatively safe for that road. When drivers flout that, they’re not only putting themselves at risk but they’re putting the general public at risk.”

Sergeant Stuhldreier urged drivers to watch both their speed and distance from other vehicles. Across the state, five people died on roads over the Australia Day break, with police detecting almost 8000 traffic offences. Victoria Police’s Superintendent Deb Robertson said the figures were disturbing. “We put the call out to people … to look out for their mates, but these drivers are showing blatant disregard for not only their own lives but the lives of those around them,” she said. “These figures are unacceptable, and it’s up to all of us to change them. “Each individual driver must be responsible for their behaviour on the roads.”

Fill up … while the going’s good Melton and Moorabool motorists are being urged to take advantage of a 12-month low in petrol prices. At some petrol stations, motorists are paying less than a dollar per litre for unleaded fuel. RACV vehicle engineering manager Michael Case said now was a good time for people to fill their tanks, with the average price as low as 101.5 cents per litre on Friday. Mr Case said if prices continued to fall, fuel would be at its lowest price since January 2009. “The wholesale price for petrol has fallen to almost a dollar per litre due to reductions in the international benchmark price for refined petrol,” Mr Case said. While there are no signs of a price spike in Melbourne any time soon, Mr Case said, fuel prices had recently risen in Adelaide and prices were starting to climb in Brisbane and Sydney. “The price for petrol in Melton is similar to the Melbourne metropolitan price,” he said. “The regional average [on Thursday] was 118 cents per litre so petrol prices in Melton are relatively low.” Melton worker Ellen Camilleri filled up her tank for $30 – it can normally cost anywhere between $40 and $50. She paid 99.9 cents per litre at Melton South. “It was so cheap,” Ms Camilleri said. “The bills are high, everything else is really expensive, but wages are staying the same. So I feel it’s fantastic to have a little bit more money to go … to maybe have a cup of coffee with my husband.”

A man received serious head injuries after allegedly being bashed with a baseball bat during a road rage incident in Caroline Springs. Police allege a black Ford Territory was being driven erratically on the Western Highway, between Rockbank and Caroline Springs, about 5.10pm on Tuesday, January 26. Councils tackle speed hotspot By Ben Cameron and Sumeyya Ilanbey Melton and Brimbank councils have agreed to work together on “chronic traffic problems” at a troubled intersection that borders both municipalities. Brimbank council has asked Melton council to consider installing traffic signals or a roundabout at the intersection of Hume Drive and Overton Lea Boulevard. Hume Drive is notorious for speeding and inconsiderate drivers, local police say. Sydenham resident Richard Carthew raised

concerns about the intersection with Brimbank council late last year, citing “chronic traffic problems” that needed urgent attention. Melton council has begun designing the duplication of Hume Drive, which includes an upgrade at the intersection. “The project straddles the municipal boundary and, as such, will require contributions from both Melton and Brimbank,” Melton’s engineering services manager, Les Stokes, said. “We will continue to work with Brimbank on an appropriate intersection treatment as part of

this design, with the project then being referred to future council budgets for consideration and ultimate construction. The exact timing of these works is yet to be agreed.” Brimbank’s infrastructure and environment director, Neil Whiteside, said the intersection fell on the side of Melton council. “Council officers from Brimbank’s engineering services department liaise with officers from Melton … on an ongoing basis in relation to border issues. This includes both verbal and written communication,” he said. Police commended Melton and Brimbank

councils’ resolve to fix issues at an intersection they say has chronic problems. Brimbank and Melton road policing adviser Senior Sergeant Ross Burbidge said police had a number of concerns, including speeding drivers, with the Overton Lea Boulevard and Hume Drive intersection. “Obviously, traffic lights are preferable, but even a roundabout is a positive,” Senior Sergeant Burbidge said. “If the speeds of the vehicles are reduced, and there happens to be a collision, the road trauma is going to be less likely, which is what we’re working towards.”

Care takes edge off crisis Slightly disgruntled and just a bit excited, seven-year-old Xavier went back to school last week … with a story to tell. The Darley youngster had been playing with his younger brother Isaac, building a pillow fort, when he fell off the bed and struck his head during the school holidays. Xavier was at first unfazed but later started complaining of blurred vision and a headache. His mum, Anna, rushed him to the Bacchus Marsh hospital. “We originally thought he had a concussion, but we knew it was much worse when Xavier started vomiting, lost consciousness and had multiple seizures,” Anna said. “As a parent you never expect this to happen to your child from a simple accident. “We were really worried about him. We didn’t know if he’d be OK, we didn’t know what was wrong with him. We were scared we were going to lose our son.”

Paramedics were called and Xavier was airlifted to the Royal Children’s Hospital where he underwent scans, revealing a fractured skull. Dad Jason said the help of the paramedics, their reassurance and caring natures had made the ordeal just that bit easier. “The professionalism was fantastic, and you can train for that … but what you can’t teach someone is to be caring,” he said. “And the fact they cared, it helped us deal with everything … don’t get me wrong, it was still horrific, but the fact they cared and were personal was a nice edge to have during such a horrific situation.” Paramedic Ashley Mann urged parents not to be afraid to call an ambulance if they faced a similar situation … and young Xavier is now looking at a career in Ambulance Victoria. Mohammed Haque and his family fell in love with Australia the moment they visited this great southern land. After arriving from Bangladesh on his wife’s student visa in 2009, the Haques started carving out a bit of the Australian dream for themselves. The pinnacle of that dream was to become

Australian citizens, which they did on Australia Day this year. The Haques were among 172 Melton residents who received their citizenship certificates at a ceremony on January 26. “We liked it here because of the living standards, and lifestyle and security,” Mr Haque said. “It’s better for my kids, and schools here are much better.”

Asked how Victoria compared with his home town, Mr Haque said: “Obviously better, particularly Melbourne.” Mr Haque said last week was more than a celebration of their citizenship certificates … they celebrated their sometimes stressful road to citizenship and the future they can now offer their children. “I’m so proud to call myself Australian,” he said.

A petition calling on the state government to build a gym at Melton West Primary School has garnered more than 250 signatures. The current multi-purpose room, where functions and sports classes are held, barely holds the 600 pupils who returned to school last week. The petition, started by the school on change.org, calls on the government to plan for a gym or hall “where the school cohort can hold assemblies and special events out of the weather”. The petition asks why Melton West primary is missing out when nearby schools have the facilities. “It is important for local communities such as ours to be able to gather together,” the petition states. “But when we don’t have a gym, special events such as the school concert and fete either need to be held outside or at another school (at additional cost to us). “Community engagement is a vital ingredient for our school, and a gymnasium will strengthen the relationships we have within our community” A spokesman for Education Minister James Merlino said the school was earmarked to receive about $27,000 from the government’s camps, sports and excursion fund this year. MY PLACE Susan Mangion founded Edible Harvest Out West two years ago after noticing an absence of community gardens around Caroline Springs. She tells Sumeyya Ilanbey her idea grew very popular very quickly. I’m a stay-at-home mum and my background is actually not in horticulture – I’ve got a bachelor in psychology. Probably in the past 15 years I’ve been involved with gardening ‌ one day I found myself drawn to the garden and started going out on a daily basis and it was a comforting place for me. Where did the idea for EHOW sprout from?

What’s been the most rewarding part of being involved with EHOW? Getting people who’ve been too scared to start growing and sharing their enthusiasm, which is really contagious. Then those people go and get their friends and family involved. Why do you think community gardens are important?

I contacted the council a couple of years ago to find out whether or not they had a community garden ‌ they didn’t. I met with members of the EHOW community in February 2014 and since then our focus has been on education, sustainability, community connectedness, people connecting to get to know each other. We’ve got a pilot garden in Taylors Hill and just last year we worked on some garden beds at a Neighbourhood House in Caroline Springs.

There are so many benefits of a community garden – the sustainability, connectedness and not only physical health but also mental health. A woman, who lives in Todmorden [in the United Kingdom], started a community garden in her town. And one of the places was in front of a police station – police also started growing their corn. The police themselves gave feedback that crime reduction had been a positive thing to come out of the community gardens. People who were once doing vandalism [and] graffiti now found a better way to use their time.

What about EHOW has caught you by surprise?

Any advice to people wanting to start gardening?

It was more popular than I expected it to be. People coming from so many different walks of life wanted to get involved. They wanted to get involved in terms of the social element. Others wanted to grow edible plants but didn’t know what to do. And others who have been gardening for so many years wanted to meet others with similar likes and share their knowledge.

Message from the Mayor Cr Kathy Majdlik If you’re a fan of hockey and athletics, you’re probably keeping a close eye on the Bridge Road Recreation reserve in Melton South. Work is progressing well and this truly innovative facility will become a popular regional sporting centre for residents across the City of Melton and other nearby municipalities. As well as boosting local athletics competition and development, the reserve will support and strengthen opportunities for residents to take part in sports and improve the overall wellbeing of our wonderful community. Funding from the Victorian Government and from Council’s own budget has made this project possible and I hope everyone in our great City will feel the same sense of pride in it as I do. Kindergarten has started for many local children, including ¤ ¯¨©¹ ¨À° ¶¨§ © ¶ °¬¤ ¤¶ ¶ ¨ ©¨°¨ ¶¬¹ ¦±¨ ¨§ Á«© §¨ Children’s and Community Centre. Children at this centre can attend three and four year old kindergarten, and families can also take advantage of Occasional Care and Maternal and Child Health services. The wonderful play areas at this centre really do encourage children to investigate, discover and use their imaginations to create different worlds. In addition, if you’re a new mum or dad, you can go along and join a parent support or play group, both of which are important to your child’s early development and your own development as a parent. This great centre is just one piece of exciting infrastructure Council is delivering in order to enable us to provide quality programs, services and early learning opportunities, so if you haven’t already done so, I encourage you to go and have a look. Caroline Springs, 13 February 2016 Award-winning Aussie indie pop band Sheppard will be joining thousands of young local residents to celebrate the sounds of summer at Summersault on 13 February 2016 from 4pm to 10pm. Held at the Town Centre Recreation Reserve in Caroline Springs, Summersault will be all about live music, great street food and fun carnival rides, with a focus on safe, free entertainment for families. New to the event in 2016 will be the Twilight Market Village, which will feature over 80 creative boutique market stalls offering unique fashion and artisan goods for sale. The Food Truck Trailer Park will be offering everything from gourmet sliders to Asian street food, and the Youth Zone will be ready for a party. SPORT Pritchard’s nine wickets lift Darley to brink of finals A stunning bowling performance from Heath Pritchard lifted Darley to a brilliant win over Ballarat/Redan in the Ballarat Cricket Association on Saturday. After Ballarat/Redan had been set a target of just 102 for victory, Pritchard took matters into his own hands with 9-19 to bowl them out for just 48. At 9-48 it looked as if Pritchard would take a rare 10-wicket haul. Only Ballarat/Redan captain Robert Hind stood in his way, after he opened the batting and battled his way to 29 in

incredibly tough conditions. But Hind lost his wicket to first-change bowler Matthew Cape to bring the innings to a close. While pleased with his own performance, Pritchard said the conditions played a role in making life tough for the batting side. “To be fair, it was always going to be a tricky week to [prepare] a wicket because of the weather we had,” he said. “Conditions were certainly in favour of bowlers and that’s just the way it was going to be this week.

“Hitting that right length was the key for us. If we bowled too full or too short, we knew we would go the journey.” Darley, third in the table, will now turn its attention to a crunch match against Mt Clear this week. A win for the Lions will secure the club a place in the A-grade finals. Star runner in gold rush By Liam Twomey It’s been an amazing 12 months for superstar runner Amelia Mazza-Downie. Having dominated the 1500 metres at both state and national level in recent years, the Seaholme resident switched her focus to the 3000 metres. While some athletes might take time to adjust to such a change, Mazza-Downie quickly showcased her special talents. The Maribyrnong College student won a gold medal in the under-16 3000 metres at the national titles in Sydney last year and backed that performance up with a gold medal at the world-class Simplot Games. The Simplot Games is the biggest high school indoor track and field event in the US, with 2000 athletes competing over three days each year in Pocatello, Idaho. “It was great competing against really experienced athletes and just seeing the way they race,” Mazza-Downie said of her overseas experience. “Since coming back to Australia and competing against the juniors, I’ve been just so much more mentally up there.” Following her success overseas, MazzaDownie went on to represent Australia at the world youth championships in Colombia. For her achievements, the 16-year-old has been selected as the winner of the 2016 Don Deeble Rising Star Award. The award is run by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club in conjunction with Star Weekly Weekly. Each month, a nominee receives $1000 donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club and other prizes to assist in reaching their sporting goals. As the overall winner, Mazza-Downie last week received a cheque for $5000. “I’m really thankful for everything the Yarraville Club and the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club do in putting this award on,” she said. “It’s a huge honour to win it.” At the award presentation evening, outstanding cricketer Nicola Hancock was declared runner-up, taking home $2000. Hancock has just come off her first season with the Melbourne Renegades in the Women’s Big Bash League and is a member of the Australian Shooting Stars development squad. Exciting footballer Lachlan Fogarty finished in equal-third place after being selected for the Australian Institute of Sport academy. Joining him in third spot was soccer and cricket player Annabel Martin, who plays for the Melbourne Victory women’s team and competed for Victoria at the national cricket championships. Falcons soar from firmer ground This time last year, Caroline Springs was anchored to the bottom of the Williamstown District Cricket Association’s A-grade turf ladder, with just one win to its name. Fast-forward 12 months, and the Falcons are knocking on the door of a finals berth. The remarkable turnaround continues what has been a strong period of growth for the club, which was playing in matting competitions just three years ago. Falcons president Steve Collins is full of praise for the club’s young players, who he says have worked hard to fit in at the next level. “We’re extremely happy with how the club has progressed,” he said. “There’s been a lot of natural improvement. The guys are a lot more comfortable playing turf cricket, which has had a positive impact on the team. “If you look at the games, if not for a little bit of bad luck getting rained out, for one, and heated out, for another, we could be sitting comfortably in the top three. “We know we still have a lot of work to do, but the club is heading in the right direction.” Caroline Springs will need to be at its best if it wants to leap into finals. The Falcons will take on first-placed Grand United and second-placed Gellibrand before a possible do-or-die clash against the third-placed Melton Centrals in the final match of the home and away season. Caroline Springs has already met the Centrals once this campaign. The Falcons picked up their most impressive win as they edged out last season’s runners-up by four runs. Leading the charge for Caroline Springs with the ball, Christopher Vulic has taken 19 wickets at an average of 13. Vulic is the only Falcons player inside the league’s top 10 rankings for wickets taken or runs scored. “But across every game, we’ve had a lot of guys put their hands up,” Collins said. “It’s not just the usual suspects. Speedster sinks Diggers By Liam Twomey Diggers Rest Bulla’s hold on top spot on the Gisborne District Cricket Association ladder has been loosened following a loss to second-placed Riddell on Saturday. After bowling first on day one, it appeared as though Diggers Rest’s winning ways would continue on the back of five wickets to Darren Quarrell. The opening bowler’s efforts helped remove Riddell for just 115. But even that proved too much for Diggers, skittled for a disappointing 72 in the 50th over. Riddell speedster Cameron Moran was the standout for the bowling side, taking 4-20 from 15 tight overs. Diggers Rest and Riddell are now both on 74 points with Bulla holding on to first place by just 0.24 points. The pressure will be on Diggers Rest to remain in top spot this week when it takes on third-placed Woodend. Lancefield was sent into bat on day one, and Luke Barker made the bowlers pay, the middle-order batsman hitting 109 to lift his side to 243. The target was too much for the Saints, bowled out for 168 in 66 overs. Glenn Caton had the best figures for Lancefield: 3-35. Despite the loss, St Anthonys keeps a strong hold on top spot. The Saints are nine points clear of second-placed Rupertswood and all but assured of hosting a home final. Lancefield’s win also dealt a blow to Bacchus Marsh’s finals aspirations.
