Pet ‘found’ but no reunion After a seven-year search, a Melton South woman hopes to be reunited with her beloved pet dog. Wendy’s two-year-old, papillon-breed Neena, went missing in October, 2009. For years, Wendy searched and was adamant that Neena had been stolen. She called a microchipping company and asked them to attach a “lost or stolen” description to the microchip database next to Neena’s registration number. She reported the disappearance to the council and police and trawled through lost dogs
websites. “I was beside myself searching for her,” Wendy said. “And Neena’s partner became really withdrawn. She wouldn’t eat … I thought I was going to lose both of them.” Then, two years ago, Wendy was given new hope when a friend saw a dog closely resembling Neena living a few streets away. Wendy said she contacted the council and police, pleading with them to visit the house where ‘Neena’ had been seen. But she said police “dismissed” it as a council concern, while council rangers told her they couldn’t get access to the dog. “I don’t understand why we get our pets registered and microchipped if council won’t

do anything,” she said. “Why did I have Neena microchipped if no one can help me get her back?” About three weeks ago, council officers told Wendy that the microchip number on paperwork submitted to Melton council to register a dog identified Wendy as the owner. Wendy thought the news meant Neena had finally been found and she would see her again. But she says council officers made no attempt to help her reunite with the dog. “I’m banging my head against the wall – no matter where I go, what I do, I can’t seem to get Neena back,” she said, her eyes welling up with tears. “I want her back.”
Melton council compliance manager Ian Stewart confirmed the council was aware of the situation and was waiting on the people who wanted to register the dog to provide proof of purchase. “Council has no legal rights to seize the dog,” Mr Stewart said. Melton police’s Sergeant Paul Allen said police were unable to help Wendy because of the length of time between Neena’s disappearance and the new developments. “I wouldn’t be happy if I was in the same situation because I love my dog,” Sergeant Allen said. “But there’s nothing police can do – [Wendy] will need to go to the courts.”

Call to fix bridge bottleneck By Matt Crossman Residents have echoed calls for a major upgrade of the road between Diggers Rest and Bulla, including the duplication of a dangerous, one-way bridge across Deep Creek. Diggers Rest Residents Association president Bob Rau said rapid residential growth in the area had led to a massive increase in traffic over the past 15 years. ‘‘There’s also a large number of motorists from Gisborne using that road, too,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s pretty much the only way through to the airport from west or north of Diggers Rest.’’ Mr Rau said the narrow Holden Bridge, which
is only wide enough for one-way traffic, was a ‘‘very serious’’ choke point crossing Deep Creek. ‘‘You have a give-way on the western side, but people coming down the hill [from the east] are frequently faced with others not abiding by the sign. We have observed a tremendous amount of demonstrated frustration, with fingers and fists flying out the windows.’’ Mr Rau said bridge railings were also damaged by heavy traffic at least 10 times a year. ‘‘With the narrow pavement, which is deteriorating, increased traffic, the choke point of the bridge and the fact you’ve also got to keep your eye out for kangaroos at night … it’s

Hume city infrastructure director Peter Waite said the council had received $930,000 under the federal black spot program. Works, including the construction of road shoulders and roadside barriers, will take place between March and June. “Council will investigate the feasibility of a new two-lane bridge,’’ Mr Waite said. “If the investigation shows that a new bridge is feasible, council can then seek state or federal government grants to fund the works.’’

Caroline Springs residents have been warned against getting close to dead birds at an artificial lake in the suburb, after the birds were likely struck down by a paralytic disease. Melbourne Water said dead birds were being removed from the lake, near Springlake Avenue, and independent diagnosis suggested they were likely to have been affected by avian botulism. The disease is caused by ingestion of a toxin produced by a bacteria widespread in soil and affecting the nervous systems of birds by preventing impulse transmission to muscles. Melbourne Water western suburbs waterways regional manager Cameron Howie said the company was working with other agencies to monitor bird deaths. He said the disease was not uncommon during this time of year. “It’s important to note that lakes like this are part of an urban stormwater drainage system that may have various pollution sources in its catchment,” Mr Howie said. “People should consider potential risks associated with coming into contact with urban water bodies.” According to Agriculture Victoria, humans and animals can only contract avian botulism by ingesting fish or birds contaminated with the toxin. Resident Nathan Miles said he had noticed a recent increase in the number of dead and paralysed birds at several lakes in the Caroline Springs area. “It was clear there was something going on,” Mr Miles said. “You don’t normally see where birds are all dead in the water.”

Shaw’s Three Well Known Australians painting has been touring the country since 1983, stopping in each state once every 10 years. And it’s on exhibition at Caroline Springs library until Sunday, March 13. The painting encourages people to use their creativity and imaginations to work out who the figures are … or what they represent. Shaw said he received extraordinary feedback and suggestions, but would not disclose whether anyone had ever guessed correctly. “It gets people to use their imagination and when people write their predictions, it’s a bit of a social commentary of the time,” Shaw said. “The same painting has been touring since 1983 and it’s interesting to see what people write.” Sumeyya Ilanbey

In Parliament last week, upper house Liberal MP Bernie Finn urged the state government to fund upgrades of the road and Holden Bridge. ‘‘A road that is not much better than a goat track is being used by huge numbers of cars on a daily basis,’’ Mr Finn said. ‘‘We have quite often huge numbers of cars awaiting huge numbers of other cars across the other side of the bridge. Land needed for road plan By Ben Cameron VicRoads could acquire “parts of” up to 26 properties for a proposed 16-kilometre six-lane road connecting the Calder and Western freeways. An environment effects statement inquiry panel hearing heard the agency owned “most of the project land”, but a “small proportion of each property, including three residential properties” could be acquired. VicRoads told the inquiry late last year that land acquisition was “unlikely” to affect business, retail and community facilities and would produce “minimal change” for residents. As part of the Palmers Road Corridor Project, expected to be completed in 2046, the six-lane road could connect the existing north-south road between Westwood Drive, near Commercial Road, Caroline Springs, to Westwood Drive just south of Kororoit Creek. It would have an 80km/h speed limit. Of 33 submissions received by the panel, nine were from residents of one Sydenham street; these residents raised amenity and noise concerns. Two properties in Lynette Court, Taylors Hill, could be affected, with plans including an intersection at Calder Park and Hume drives. A “small section of land” from the rear of both properties would be acquired. VicRoads described the acquisitions as “minimal”. Caroline Springs resident Lloyd Mouat told Star Weekly the plans showed that the kerb of the road could run a “mere 5.2 metres” from his back fence.
He said the project, although long-term, should not be considered as a viable option. “I am seriously concerned at the impact that six lanes will have on our property and our standard of living, whether it’s us or future inhabitants,” he said. “Yes, all the boxes have been ticked by the many studies into this project, but it appears that near enough is good enough where residents are concerned.”

VicRoads told the hearing the biggest environmental impact, due to an expected “significant increase in noise”, would be on people living near two proposed three-lane bridges to be built over Kororoit Creek. A VicRoads spokesman said it had consulted property owners for several years. The panel recommended that the project be approved and that environmental impacts could be managed. It said “property acquisition should be avoided whenever possible” and impacts on property owners could be “mitigated to an acceptable level”. “The project will have a significant adverse visual impact on the Kororoit Creek corridor unless substantial mitigation measures are implemented,” the panel found.

School principal Caryn Fox said this was the third year the school has signed up for Active April, which challenges participants to commit to exercising for at least 30 minutes a day. And while there’s a lot of hard work involved for Ms Fox, keeping track of the exercise diaries of 39 pupils, she reckons it’s all worth it. “Because we’re such a small community,
when you get opportunities, when you can get all kids involved, we seize it,” she said. And the best part of it is the ripple effect of “active” months, Ms Fox said, with pupils encouraging their parents to get going as well. “The kids aren’t going home and just staring at their computers and playing games,” she said. “For some it definitely instils in them a healthy lifestyle.”

Auction tactics ‘out of control’ Auction reform is needed to stop rogue agents from misleading potential buyers by underquoting houses by tens of thousands of dollars, former Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV) ethics committee chairman John Keating believes. The Keatings Real Estate director said underquoting was a problem across the state but a more serious issue in areas with a high concentration of auctions. ‘‘It started in the inner city areas about 20 years ago and, over the past 10, it’s got out of control,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s so prevalent now that the auction system is almost predicated on the fact that the agent is overquoting to the vendor in order to win the business, which is equally dishonest as underquoting, when the agents know the property is going to go for much higher than they’re quoting or they know the vendor wants much more.’’ Mr Keating said the deceptive practice was more than an inconvenience for potential buyers. ‘‘People get their hopes up, they get excited about the property, put time into the inspections and get their finance and legals in order and then find on the day they’re nowhere near,’’ he said. Mr Keating wants agents to be required to publish the vendor’s reserve price in all advertising for a property. ‘‘The property is FOOD BILL then on the market for fair, open, transparent competition by the buyers,’’ he said. ‘‘What buyers want is maximum transparency.’’

While Mr Keating believes 30-40 per cent of agents support his proposal, they are not prepared to put it into practice for fear of missing out on listings. With the industry unlikely to self-regulate, Mr Keating is calling on both sides of politics to act.

While the state government wouldn’t be drawn on potential reforms, Consumer Affairs Minister Jane Garrett has directed 200 surprise auction inspections to crack down on underquoting. Western Water’s replacement of an old water main along the Avenue of Honour in Bacchus Marsh is on track for completion next month. Lane closures because of the work will soon end, according to Western Water general manager Graham Holt. He said because of the cultural and environmental significance of the avenue and its trees, Western Water was had worked hard to ensure the works had the lowest possible impact. “The main needs to be replaced so we can provide quality water services to around 70 customers in the area,” Mr Holt said. “The old water main had frequent main bursts that needed complex and costly repairs.”

A 29-year-old Footscray man has been charged with 20 offences including theft from motor car, using stolen credit cards and driving while disqualified after Melton detectives executed a search warrant in Footscray on February 18. Some of the charges relate to thefts from motor cars in the Hillside area during February and other offences in Sunbury and Toorak. Police also arrested a 29-year-old man, at his Sunbury house. Second Melton track ‘a priority’ By Sumeyya Ilanbey Melton railway line needs to be duplicated and electrified within the next five to 10 years, Infrastructure Australia has asserted. An upgrade of the line is one of only two public transport projects identified as priorities for Victoria by the national body. Greens MP Colleen Hartland, Melton MP Don Nardella and Melton mayor Kathy Majdlik have called on the state government to fund the upgrade in its coming budget. “I don’t understand why the government isn’t just moving on with [the upgrade],” Ms
Hartland said. “The benefits are enormous – not just for Melton but for getting cars off the road, giving people a choice … and it has benefits for Deer Park and Ardeer.” Ms Hartland said Melton was no longer a country area and its services needed to reflect that. “Melton is growing at an extraordinary rate,” she said. “I can see this being incredibly beneficial for people going into the city for work or school.” Mr Nardella said he was committed to working with Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan to solve the area’s public transport woes.
“The need is there even more now,” he said. Mr Nardella said he would welcome Melbourne Metro putting the upgrade on the agenda again as it was vital for the city, for both daily commuters and for connecting people to other services and appointments. The upgrade of the line has also been identified as a priority by Melton council as part of the National Growth Areas Alliance’s Fund Our Future campaign. Cr Majdlik said she hoped Infrastructure Australia’s report would convince the state government to commit to duplicating and electrifying the line as soon as possible.
But Ms Allan would not confirm whether the line upgrade would be included in this year’s budget. She said duplication of the line was part of the second stage of Public Transport Victoria’s [PTV) network development plan for the next decade. But she conceded services along the Ballarat corridor would increase substantially. “Last year, the government delivered the largest public transport investment in Victoria’s history … further investment will be announced as part of this year’s budget,” Ms Allan said. PTV was contacted for comment.
Try before buy in Ballan Amber Durante was spending thousands of dollars on toys and books for her son, who has Asperger’s, only to discover they were unsuitable. And she suspected dozens of Ballan neighbours were in similar situations. So a few years ago, Ms Durante started the Embrace ASD Wellbeing Library in a bid to help families test items before they commit to buying them. It’s been a hit. “There was a lot of enthusiasm when I was in the process of setting it up,” Ms Durante said. “And now we’ve also built a bit of a friendship group as well.” Autism-specific items, such as “chewables” and weighted blankets can be very expensive. And not all work for every child on the spectrum.
Ms Durante’s hopes of building a network to save families thousands of dollars are coming to fruition. A family borrows an item, toy or book, trials it and decides whether or not it suits their children’s needs before returning it to the library. More room for learning By Esther Lauaki A bigger and better learning space is on the horizon for Rockbank Primary School thanks to a $23,000 state funding injection. Education Minister James Merlino last week announced the first 33 project grants to come from the state government’s Inclusive Schools Fund. Rockbank Primary School principal Troy Johns said the funding would help create more flexibility. “Our space is pretty open at the moment, but some of it will be modified,” he said.

“Sometimes you might have a child who gets easily distracted and can’t concentrate in a noisy environment … in that case we can move that child into a quieter space where they can learn better. “The funding will mean we can create a more flexible and inclusive space so we can better cater to the diverse learning needs of the students. “We applied for funding for two projects and we’ve received funding for one … we’re very happy with that. Every bit helps.” The fund provides $10 million over four years to build school facilities and help government schools better support the social and educational needs of students with disabilities. Projects will include “outdoor areas,

accessible playgrounds, sensory spaces and other equipment”. “This is about transforming hundreds of young lives over the next four years by giving schools the opportunity to realise their
vision for a truly inclusive school,” Mr Merlino said. He said the Inclusive Schools Fund was helping give students with disabilities the same chances as other students.
Hospitals to get new oversight The state government has appointed cardiologist Andrew Wilson as Victoria’s first chief medical officer to bolster its governance of safety and quality in the hospital system. It also appointed a specialist panel to advise on best practice in hospitals and to help define the new chief medical officer’s role and reporting requirements. The appointments were made in the wake of multiple perinatal deaths and injuries at Bacchus Marsh Hospital, which were uncovered during an independent investigation last year into its maternity ward. This led to the realisation that some baby deaths may have been avoided. Health Minister Jill Hennessy appointed Dr Stephen Duckett, health programs director at the Grattan Institute, to chair the panel, which will consult with experts in hospital safety and report to government later this year about areas needing improvement. Meanwhile, Associate Professor Wilson is developing strategies to strengthen safety at the state’s hospitals. “He will work with Better Care Victoria, clinical networks and clinical consultative councils to ensure a joint focus,” a Health Department spokesman said. Maurice Blackburn, the law firm representing the families affected by the Bacchus Marsh baby deaths, is investigating up to 20 cases of baby deaths and injuries, or their mothers being injured during birthing. MY PLACE Jean Rau is a familiar face and name around Diggers Rest – she’s lived in the town for nearly two decades and can’t imagine doing so anywhere else. The 72-year-old speaks to Sumeyya Ilanbey. I was born north of Swan Hill. I went to teacher’s college in country Victoria and have been a teacher all my life. I’ve always had a love of gardening, from my mum and aunt ‌ that love continues until today.
I think the population will create it. Diggers, being as small as it is with a mobile population because of the rental homes – it’s hard to create a “community�. I think we’ll get community connectedness when we get a bigger population.
What’s your favourite thing to do when you’re feeling down?
You volunteer with the community radio station North West FM. How did you get involved?
The garden is a wonderful thing for that. The one day of my life that is set in stone is AFL grand final day. The moment it’s time for the footy to start, I’m out in the garden. The world is peaceful during grand final day when everyone’s either indoors or at the game.
We were approached by the radio station to do a program [about gardening] when it first started opening. I had to hide my involvement because my husband threatened me with divorce ‌ but he [eventually] got involved as well.
What’s your favourite thing about living in Diggers Rest?
What’s the most exciting part about volunteering for community radio?
The fact that it is a small community and it is peaceful and quiet in a rural setting.
It’s being involved with young people – it keeps me in touch with what’s happening in society. I love the way young people treat me as if I’m one of them ‌ they don’t treat me like I’m an old, grey, wrinkly lady. Volunteering for community radio also gets you in touch with other like-minded people and helps you create a relationship with nearby radio stations – 3G in Sunbury, the Melton FM and Apple FM in Bacchus Marsh. We try to keep a good relationship.
How has Diggers Rest changed since you’ve moved here? Certainly there’s been a couple of developments that increased the population slightly. But the current developments are the ones that are going to make the big difference – turning Diggers Rest from a quiet little township into a community. I love Diggers Rest being a tiny place but if we want services we need to have a population. Do you think there’s a sense of community connection?

SPORT Centrals recoup height after injury-plagued season Not much went right for Melton Centrals in the Riddell District Netball League last season. The club was badly hampered by injuries to key-position players throughout the year as it tried to transition a number of new faces into its set-up. Even though so much went wrong, Centrals showed just how tough they are, fighting from down and out at the season’s mid-point to qualify for finals. With the new season just weeks away, Centrals’ head coach Randy Pereira is confident that, given a decent run without injuries, the
club can again return to the top end of the ladder. “You never really know how it’s going to play out until those first few weeks when you can see all the teams,” he said. “Last year was tough, but I think we will be able to get up to the top three. That would be great for the club.” Melton will be without gun mid-court player Tran Truong this season. Truong, who won the league’s best and fairest last year, has retired and will be a major loss. On the flipside, the Centrals welcome back top shooter Rebecca Morabito, a
member of the club’s premiership side in 2014. Pereira says it will be the tallest side for many seasons. “Tran has already said that if we need a fill-in, she will be happy to put her hand up. We feel like we’ve done pretty well with our recruiting, though,” the coach said. “I think we have a fairly good squad. Every team goes into the season with plenty of hope, and the first few weeks will tell us more, but we are really happy with the squad we have. “Having tall goalers will be ideal. We will have someone we can just pop it over to.”
Spotlight on young Jets By Liam Twomey An AFL rule change means there will be more eyes than ever on the Western Jets this season. The capacity for AFL clubs to trade future draft picks means recruiters will no longer be primarily concerned with top-age talent coming out of the TAC Cup system. If AFL clubs see something they like at a bottom age or under-16 level, they can start positioning themselves to get that player by securing more selections in the draft in which he is slated to participate. Western Jets region manager Shane Sexton said the change had already had a noticeable impact. “AFL clubs are going to be really interested in our bottom-age group, more interested than they have ever been before,” he said. “If they find something that they like, they can trade a future pick for that. It has certainly become a bit more intriguing because of that. “We’ve seen this already with the under-16s. The recruiters already want to know who are the best young talents coming through.” The Western Jets are just weeks away from kicking off their 2016 campaign which has been building after an intense pre-season. The club played its first practice match on Sunday and is looking to put the finishing touches to its squad in coming weeks. The Jets will play another two practice games before the season starts – against Oakleigh and the Calder Cannons. “You agonise over the composition of the squad and there are always some really tough decisions every year,” Sexton said. “It is very difficult but it is something … over the years we feel like we have established a really good process. “Whichever way you do it, though, unfortunately there are going to be some disappointed boys.” Already locked in is the Jets’ 2016 leadership group. The club has appointed Oscar Junker, Judah Dundon, Nicholas Giarrizzo, Daniel Venables and Wilson Berry. Sexton praised those boys for embracing leadership roles throughout the pre-season. “They certainly demonstrated the qualities we are looking for in leaders,” he said. “In the finish they were elected by their peers. The whole squad voted on who they thought would be best suited to be in the leadership group. “There is great buy-in there from the playing group which we think is really important.” The Jets are expected to finalise the captaincy in coming weeks. The Jets will start their 2016 campaign with three vital matches – against the Oakleigh Chargers, Eastern Ranges and Sandringham Dragons. Those contests will be used to help select the Vic Metro squad for the forthcoming under-18 national championships. Oscar Junker will be a member of the Western Jets leadership group this season. This year will be Pereira’s last at the helm. He will remain at the club but step down from coaching at the end of the year. “I think it’s at a point now where we need to get someone in with a netball name who can attract some good VNL players,” Pereira said. “That’s the way the competition is going. Wanted: full forward to kick 60 goals Melton coach Brad Murphy knows the drill at this time of year . . . every team is training the house down and every player is primed for their best season yet. And the Ballarat Football League outfit is no different, with a fully fit squad and personal-best training times featuring on the playing list. But Murphy also knows a strong offseason is just the start of Melton’s bid to climb back to the top of the ladder. “I think every coach in the league thinks it’s going alright, but it’s a bit dangerous to talk about how well you’re going,” he said. “A couple of injuries or a bit of bad luck will probably hurt us more than other clubs as we don’t bat as deep as some others. “We’re under no illusions we’re coming from a long way back. Having said that, the boys are in good form.” Melton had a tough 2015 campaign, the club finishing ninth on the ladder with just three wins. From that squad, Jarryd Ramsay, Murphy Watt and Brayden Sneddon won’t be back at the Bloods as they’ve returned to their former club, Hoppers Crossing. They will be replaced by ruckman Mark Maric, of the Essendon District Football League, and former VFL player Jack Walker. Walker has been at Williamstown for the past four years and is a development league premiership player at the Seagulls. Melton will also welcome back captain Jake Gleeson, who missed most of last season through injury. The club is still searching for one final piece in its recruiting puzzle. “We haven’t been able to secure the big full forward who will give us 60 goals in a season,” Murphy said. “Instead, we’re going to have to look at three or four who can kick 25. “We’re still in talks with a forward who has played at a higher level and has regularly kicked more than 40 a season. “If we could secure someone like him, it would top us off really nicely.” The Bloods will kick off their 2016 campaign against local rival Melton South after practice matches against Western Region Football League division 1 clubs Wyndhamvale and Albion and against Riddell District’s Macedon. Lions bow out of finals By Liam Twomey It is hard to believe, but Darley has missed a place in the Ballarat Cricket Association finals. The Lions were top of the ladder going into the final round of the season, but a run of unfortunate events knocked the club back to fifth place, then out of the premiership race. The first thing to hurt Darley was going down to Golden Point. After being bowled out for 132 on day one of the contest, Darley returned to Eastern Oval on Saturday in search of quick wickets. The Lions got what they were after on the back of two brilliant spells from Heath Pritchard and Matthew Cape. The duo bowled for most of the afternoon and had Golden Point in all sorts of trouble at 8-102. However, a ninth wicket partnership between Andrew Warrick and Peter Appleton turned the match. The pair added a match-winning 39 to hand Golden Point the victory and subsequently, top spot on the BCA’s A-grade ladder. Despite the loss, Darley was still in a strong position to make finals. It either needed Brown Hill or Mt Clear to lose, or Wendouree to not win outright. However, disaster struck and all three outcomes went against the Lions. Brown Hill smashed 330 against East Ballarat for a big win. Mt Clear, a side Darley beat just one round earlier, easily accounted for Napoleons/ Sebastopol, and Wendouree outplayed Ballarat/ Redan to secure an outright win. To make matters worse, the Lions have beaten all finals bound sides except for Golden Point during the home and away season. The A-grade finals series will now pit Golden Point against Wendouree while Brown Hill will host Mt Clear.

A lower order batting collapse cost Melton the chance of a final round victory in the Victorian Sub District Cricket Association on Saturday. Taking on top-of-the-table Oakleigh, Melton was set 182 to win the one-day fixture. After struggling with the bat for most of the year, it looked as if the Lions had saved their best for last, as they moved to 2-100, Anthony Gale and David Kirk the set batsmen at the crease. However, the loss of Gale triggered a collapse, with Melton losing 8-53 to finish at 9-155. Kirk was top-scorer for the Lions with 33. The loss means the Lions finish the season in 13th spot on the south-west ladder, with two wins. The opening week of the VSDCA finals pits Oakleigh against Ormond, Caulfield will host Hoppers Crossing, while Yarraville and Werribee will do battle.

A final round victory handed Melton Centrals top spot on the ladder in the Williamstown District Cricket Association on Saturday. The Centrals accounted for Caroline Springs, with a brilliant century from opening batsman Grant McDonald. Centrals now host Gellibrand in the first week of finals. The other semi-final has Bellbridge hosting defending champions Grand United, which lost its final round match on Saturday to Williamstown Colts. Parkers see off Melton By Liam Twomey Deer Park has knocked Melton out of Bowls Victoria’s pennant finals race. The Parkers were forced to fight hard to secure the victory, with nothing separating the two teams for most of the afternoon. But Deer Park showed its class by edging ahead with two ends left to seal the 78 (13)-73 (5) win. Parkers president Ray Franksen said it was great for the club to bounce back after the loss to Glenroy the previous week. “Melton had to win to get a spot in the finals and we did a very good job to see them off,” he said.
While Melton’s season has come to an end, Deer Park’s is just heating up. The Parkers have secured top spot on the division 1 section 3 ladder with an ultra- impressive 14-3 record and will meet Essendon in a home semi-final this weekend. “We’re ready for next week, believe me,” Franksen said. “The mood at the club is terrific and we have three sides with home finals next Saturday. “We feel that if we play our best, no one will beat us. It’s as simple as that.” Deer Park and Essendon have met twice already this season. The Parkers won by 32 shots in round two, but the round 11 match
was called off because of heat. If Deer Park claims the premiership it will be promoted to premier division. Franksen said the top side wasn’t the only one hunting promotion. “Our second side has come from division 5 to division 3 and is a chance to go to division 2 if they win,” he said. “The third side will have come from division 7 to division 5 if they win this time.”

Saints fold after red-hot opening
Phoenix cup journey starts with a bang Melton has made the ideal start to its FFA Cup campaign. The Phoenix dismantled Noble Park Soccer Club at the weekend, winning 9-0 to progress to the next round of the elimination tournament. Melton coach Peter Schwellinger went into the match expecting a tough hit-out between the two state league 4 sides. But his players ensured there would be no nervous moments as they raced to a 3-0 lead before half-time then went on to score another six goals. “It was a very easy win actually,” Schwellinger said. “I expected it to be a harder game because they are also playing in the state league 4 like us but in the south-side division. “I had no idea how good or bad they were because we’ve never played them before. It was a bit of a surprise to us. We really dominated from the start.” Chris Briggs and Jordan Borg were the standouts for Melton, applying constant pressure on Noble Park by creating chances in front of goal. Schwellinger said the team’s defence was impressive given the Phoenix was yet to start its state league campaign. “It was a complete team effort,” he said. “Our goalkeeper had almost nothing to do and I think that really speaks for his teammates in front of him. “Our defence was very solid. We had a couple of passages where we slowed down a bit in the first half and allowed them to have two or three chances. “We picked it up again in the second half and were very disciplined.” The Phoenix will find out its second-round FFA Cup opponent this week. The state league 4 season begins later this month. This will be Schwellinger’s second season in charge at the club after leading Melton to a seventh-place finish last year. A final round loss has doubled the pain for St Anthonys in the Gisborne District Cricket Association. The Saints were handsomely beaten by Rupertswood at the weekend, forcing them to give up top spot on the ladder – a position they’d held most of the season – to their conquerors. Bowling first in the top-of-thetable clash the weekend before last, St Anthonys was well and truly in control of this contest early as the Rupertswood top order folded. The batting side slumped to 4-7 then 5-23, and it looked as though a sub 100-run total was on the cards. But Rupertswood rallied with wicketkeeper Christopher Ryan leading the charge. Ryan hit 109 from 167 balls in an innings that included 16 boundaries and progressed Rupo’s total to 9-220. Returning to Arnolds Creek Oval on Saturday, the Saints had no answer to Rupertswood’s attack, being bowled out for a disappointing 108. Aaron Forward and Brandon Webber led the way for the bowling side, taking three wickets each, while Anthony Morrison claimed two. The loss knocked St Anthonys to second place on the B-grade ladder. After going undefeated through the first eight rounds of the season, the Saints have now lost their last three matches – poor preparation for taking on Wallan in a semi-final this week. Rupertswood will host Bacchus Marsh in the other semi. Meanwhile, in A-grade, a final round loss to Gisborne meant Diggers Rest Bulla finished in fourth spot. Diggers Rest will now take on top-of-the-table Woodend in a semi-final clash. The two sides last met in round 11, with Woodend emerging as comfortable winners. A final-round victory for Bacchus Marsh meant the Bulls avoided relegation. Bacchus Marsh defeated thirdplaced Riddell and jumped to sixth on the McIntyre Cup ladder. MOTOR Compact Kia puts smile on dial Descriptions such as ‘practical’, ‘people-mover’ and ‘compact’ from a car dealer’s mouth used to be enough to make this rev head run for the hills. Yet here I was driving a car with all three traits and I had a smile on my face. Let’s face it, the Kia Rondo isn’t the sexiest car in the Kia stable, so I pushed the engine start button with some trepidation. However, this car quickly grew on me and I even started to admire some of its lines from certain angles that make it look smaller than it really is. While compact SUVs now represent a big slice of the market, compact people-movers haven’t really sold here in big numbers – surprising considering our love of practical family cars. And the Rondo is pretty practical, with seven seats that fold down to provide almost van-like capacity, yet it looks and almost performs like a hatchback. The impish exterior is deceptive, which you realise once inside. The floor is pretty low, which means less interior space taken up by roof arches, giving plenty of headroom. And it appears much wider inside. The cockpit is very much like its Kia SUV stablemates in terms of uncluttered looks and equipment, which, being a Kia, is plentiful. Standard equipment includes cruise control, LCD touchscreen with reverse camera, satnav steering wheel-mounted controls, Blutooth phone and audio, and USB/auxiliary sockets. Then there’s the standard safety features including front, side and curtain airbags, brake

assist, Hill-Start Assist and reverse parking sensors. The driving position is comfortable and somewhat commanding, like larger peoplemovers, such as the Kia Carnival. Passengers are well served, particularly in the second row, with two comfortable seats that slide back and forth, USB sockets and plenty of storage and cupholders. The rear seats are for kids, but you could squeeze a couple of adults in there for shortish trips. Rear storage with the rear seats up is excellent, but as with most seven seaters, you lose a lot of space once they’re up.
That said, it’s probably unfair to judge its limitations as a seven-seater against, say, the Carnival, which is considerably bigger. The Rondo was pretty agile. I like the steering, which has different settings for driving and parking. The 2.0-litre petrol engine struggled a little with a full house, meaning fuel consumption got up to about 10 litres/100 km combined, according to my testing. For some reason, Kia has stopped bringing out the Rondo with the very frugal 1.7 diesel engine, which received much better reviews when it was released a couple of years ago.
It only comes with a six-speed automatic transmission, which does a good job but may be happier with a slightly larger powerplant. That said, once on the highway it cruised along pretty well and was easy to handle in town. The Rondo starts from $35,288 on road for the SI and $44,057 for the Platinum. I test-drove the latter and appreciated the extra features, including the 10-way electrically adjusted driver’s seat, panoramic sunroof, and airliner-style trays on the back of the front seats for mid-row passengers.
