Attack caught on camera By Esther Lauaki The victim of a vicious dog attack that was caught on CCTV cameras wants irresponsible dog owners held accountable if they let their pets wander the streets off-leash. Melton resident Ryan Tempany was walking his dog Baxter at night on February 18 when two dogs attacked the seven-year-old basset hound. “I was walking home from my parents’ house on Darlingsford Boulevard in Melton,” he said. “It was about 10pm … two dogs that looked like pit bulls came out from behind a car and

started to attack Baxter. I was just screaming out for help. My first instinct was to hit the ground and cover Baxter. “It was a frightening situation. After the fight, I was checking over him … he’d stopped breathing for about 15 to 20 seconds in shock and then he shook his body and started breathing again. I was beside myself.” The two-minute ordeal was caught on the security cameras of nearby houses. Mr Tempany handed the footage to Melton council rangers. “Luckily, we’re both fine now,” Mr Tempany said. “He came away with four minor puncture

wounds and bruises. I had grazes all up one side of my body because I was trying to cover him as much as I could.” Mr Tempany got Baxter at six weeks old as a 30th birthday gift from his parents. “I’m very hesitant to walk him in Melton again, but we have been on walks out at the beach and he’s OK,” he said. “He doesn’t seem to be spooked at all.” He said the situation could have been worse if not for the residents who came to his aid. “A woman came out with a plastic chair that another man used to help break up the dog fight and scare the other dogs off,” he said.

“I want to put forward my sincere thanks to around about a dozen people who came out to assist. “An ambulance came after the attack and checked me over and checked Baxter over as well. “There are some idiot owners out there who don’t have their dogs on a lead. I’m not critical of the dogs, I’m critical of the owners. I’ve seen some dog owners who just let their dogs run off. “If you take your dogs out for a walk, as a responsible owner, you should be with them and always have them on a lead.” CCTV footage: www.starweekly.com.au

By Esther Lauaki A Balliang East woman is calling on VicRoads to lower the speed limit on a notorious stretch of road where her father once pulled a passenger from a wrecked car in which two people had died. Lorraine Dexter took up the cause a fortnight ago after another serious crash on the same Geelong-Bacchus Marsh Road in Balliang East, outside her father’s property. “My dad has lived here for almost 40 years,” she said. “A few years ago he helped a person out of a car accident in which two people died. “There have been many, many accidents . . . outside the front of the house and there was another on February 26. “A car ran off the road, cleaned up our letterbox, became airborne across our driveway,

landed in shrubs and travelled another 30 metres and came to rest among trees. The driver was taken to hospital in a serious condition.” Geelong-Bacchus Marsh Road has a 100km/h limit and, according to VicRoads, has seen average traffic numbers rise from 5700 to 5800 vehicles a day over the past five years. VicRoads regional director Ewen Nevett said there were 13 crashes, two with fatalities, on the four-kilometre stretch of road in Balliang East in the five years to July 2015. “While we haven’t had formal discussions with Moorabool council, we’re aware of the community concern about Geelong-Bacchus Marsh Road,” he said. “We’re currently investigating a number of potential road safety improvements that will be considered for funding programs.” Ms Dexter said she wanted the speed limit

reduced to 80km/h immediately until a formal decision by VicRoads had been reached. She said drivers were ignoring signs on both sides of the township saying ‘Welcome to Balliang East, Please slow down’. “This is a small community with a popular primary school on the highway, past the Werribee turn-off towards Geelong,” Ms Dexter said. “I’ve almost been involved in an accident myself turning into our driveway, even after indicating 200 metres in advance and pumping brakes to alert the cars following me. “They just don’t slow down . . . these signs are utterly useless. It’s like a freeway here and it has to be changed now. Cameras would be a good start. I’m asking for any other suggestions before others, including myself, are killed or injured on this treacherous length of road.”

Melton police are hunting five teenage thieves after a Caroline Springs Square jewellery store closed its doors indefinitely following a robbery early last Tuesday morning. The thieves, believed to be aged between 15 and 18, stole jewellery valued up to about $30,000 after breaking into Prouds Jewellers about 3am. Melton’s Detective Acting Sergeant Chris Jackman said police had been analysing CCTV vision of the theft late last week, but no arrests had yet been made. “These thieves look very young,” he said. The burglars forced open the roller doors at the Caroline Springs store and stole jewellery from the front glass window and back room. First Constable Nicole Zammit, of Melton, said the thieves had forced open a roller security door and smashed glass display cabinets in the shop to steal the jewellery. A sign on the Caroline Springs store last week read: “Due to unforeseen circumstances, until further notice this store will not be trading.”

Hayley Trask will bid her long locks farewell at the end of this week. The 23-year-old Bacchus Marsh Grammar teacher is taking part in this year’s World’s Greatest Shave to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation. Ms Trask said she’d always been hesitant to wave goodbye to her hair but decided to take the plunge after a family friend was diagnosed with leukaemia last year. “She was always doing things for the community,” Ms Trask said. “To have someone you know get diagnosed with leukaemia was a big shock … it brought the cause a little bit closer to home.” Ms Trask will have her head shaved during school hours at Bacchus Marsh Grammar in the hope her students will feel inspired. “It’s definitely a personal challenge … for me, it’s an opportunity to be a good example to the kids,” she said. “I want to show them looks aren’t everything – if you want to do something that makes you feel like a good person, perhaps looks aren’t really a big thing.” To sponsor Ms Trask, visit goo.gl/H7b4wa Sumeyya Ilanbey

Hard yakka to pay farm rates Victorian Farmers Federation president Peter Tuohey said the Sharkey’s situation was symptomatic of a wider problem with the state’s farmers paying an “unfair share” of the rates burden. Many farmers paid the same rates and charges as the Sharkeys, he said. “I know of one bloke who pays $80,000.”

Moorabool council’s chief executive, Rob Croxford, acknowledged the Sharkeys’ rates bill was “a very large amount” of money. “I have an enormous amount of empathy for them and a high regard … but, unfortunately, the system works against them,” he said. “On average, the valuation of their property is going up faster than the valuation of other properties. “The biggest difficulty … is their proximity to Melbourne, Geelong and that growth area through the Wyndham corridor,” Mr Croxford said. A City of Greater Geelong spokesman said the council wanted to retain large primary production holdings, and provided farmers a rate rebate of 34 per cent to the residential rate. He said ratepayers could challenge their rates by challenging the capital improved valuation of their properties. – The Age

It was a sizeable slug for rates and other charges in anyone’s language – $27,550.90 for the council, plus $3425.50 for the fire services levy. The combined annual charges of almost $31,000 would have been enough money for Eric Sharkey and his son, Chris, to buy a new farm workhorse, with a few thousand dollars’ change to boot. The Sharkey family farm has about 1970 hectares at Balliang East, growing crops and running sheep. The farm includes a number of titles, some of which are in Moorabool shire, others in the City of Greater Geelong. Rates notices assess the total capital improved value of the holding at about $10.2 million, but the Sharkeys say this is over-inflated and reflects sales prices for smaller rural properties. “It’s way too much. It’s unsustainable,” Chris Sharkey said. “We’ve tried to explain to council and councillors that it’s affecting the business decisions we make because of the size of the bill. “There are lots of things we’d like to do to improve the farm, improve the productivity and improve our efficiency, but with a $30,000 bill … we could do a lot with that money.” Eric Sharkey said the rates bill had virtually doubled over eight years. “Not only do we think it’s unfair, I’m really concerned about the way it’s increasing – five to six to eight per cent a year,” he said. Council rate rises dwarfed any rises in prices of their farm produce, the pair said. Over recent years, the family has raised its concerns about rates with government ministers, senators and councils, but it says no one listens.

Light on dark days A Myrniong artist has added a colourful touch to a community-sponsored $50,000 Ballan cancer treatment unit. Liz Blizzard, who knows all too well about travelling long distances for cancer treatment and waiting for hours at hospitals, has donated her oil painting of Lake Eyre to the Ballan Medical Centre’s day infusion unit. Ms Blizzard’s late husband battled bowel and myriad other cancers for many years, travelling to and from Ballarat for treatment. “I think this is a happy painting – it’s got bright colours,” Ms Blizzard said. “And it might be a little bit contemplative – I’m not sure. Maybe it can be. “When you’re sitting there you can look at it and wonder what it is. It makes sitting here

for, sometimes, hours … pass the time a little bit more.” The medical centre’s chief executive Wayne Weaire said the “generous donation” was a testament to the “proud partnerships” that kept the clinic alive. “How do you create a great space for people who may have to go through treatment that’s not so great?” Mr Weaire said. “And then all of a sudden Liz’s generosity to us … I was standing [in the day infusion unit] and thinking how much of a difference it makes to a room.” The painting is on loan to the medical centre for the next three years. Calm in face of danger By Sumeyya Ilanbey When Ashton arrived into the world four weeks ago, his mum, Kristine, sighed a breath of relief bigger than most. The little trooper was born prematurely, at 37 weeks, after his mum was involved in a car accident. Kristine thought she’d either lost her little baby or his bones had been badly broken. But Ashton couldn’t be healthier. “The car is completely gone – it’s a write-off,” Kristine said.

“So I thought I’d lost the baby straight away – I didn’t feel any movements, my tummy went really soft and flat, and I copped bruising all over my stomach.” Like any parent, Kristine panicked, but paramedics Ashley Mann and Emma Philips were her guardian angels, keeping her calm at the scene of the accident. “The hard part was not knowing whether [Ashton] had left us, so I really appreciated Emma and Ashley being there,” Kristine said. Kristine, of Hopetoun Park, was taken to the Royal Melbourne’s Hospital and subsequently the Royal Women’s, where she and her unborn baby were monitored and assessed. And while she didn’t know it at the time, Kristine’s placenta had moved as a result of the accident, mixing her blood with her bub’s. It was a stressful few days for the family, but three days after the accident, on Friday, February 5, little Ashton was born. Ms Mann said she had focused on trying to

keep Kristine calm during her roadside ordeal. “And given there was a bub involved, it was important she stayed calm – when she’s calm, the baby’s calm.” Ms Mann meet Ashton two weeks ago.

“One of the things paramedics don’t get to do is follow up,” Ms Mann said. “So when we get to find out how well they’re doing now, it’s really good. “And the baby’s beautiful.”

New suburb sparks rivalry Caroline Springs residents fear their needs will be forgotten by the state government now a new suburb has moved into town. Thornhill Park, a master planned community of 2376 houses between Melton and Caroline Springs, was given the green light as Melbourne’s newest suburb last Wednesday. Planning minister Richard Wynne signed off on its precinct structure plan, which is being managed by the Metropolitan Planning Authority. Residents took their concerns online. “Caroline Springs’ residents were promised a train station, clean lakes, Internet connection, safe streets … have state government and Melton council delivered, or are they just moving on?” one post on the Caroline Springs Residents Facebook page asked. Welsh Developments owner and former Essendon footballer Andrew Welsh, said Thornhill Park will offer all the lifestyle choices and amenities needed to attract new residents. Thornhill Park estate will have two primary schools, a retail centre, a sports reserve and a new train station – part of plans to upgrade the Melton railway line. Woodlea wows out west Woodlea has topped the charts as Australia’s fastest-selling estate for the last quarter. The news follows on the heels of the Rockbank estate’s crowning as the state’s fastest-selling community in the September quarter last year as well. The findings come from research undertaken by property consulting firm Charter Keck Cramer for the National Land Survey Program. Woodlea project director Matthew Dean said families were flocking to the western suburbs, as infrastructure and amenities are increasingly improved. The proximity of the estate to Melbourne’s CBD – less than 30 kilometres – and the Rockbank train station, make it an ideal location for families, Mr Dean said. “To be witnessing these sorts of sales figures, month after month, reinforces that customers are attracted to the diverse housing options and block sizes available for them to build their dream home,” Mr Dean said. “We really are going above and beyond to deliver the highest quality amenities for families, including a choice of private and public schools.” Charter Keck Cramer national executive director Robert Papaleo said Melbourne’s west was smashing records, with an average of 549 sales per month in the December quarter, up from 463 the previous quarter.

Ballan builds up choice By Matthew Dixon, Ballarat Courier The turning of the first sod at Linton estate last Thursday was eight years coming for developer Peter Dickson. A large crowd gathered at the soon-to-be bustling construction site on the edge of Ballan where the first residential village is being built for older members of the LGBTI community – lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people, and others of like mind. “There were times [when I thought it might not happen],” Mr Dickson said. “There have been tears … but you just think, I am going to do this, I am going to make it happen.”

Mr Dickson, the project’s founder and managing director, said residents could expect work to start on Linton estate within a fortnight. He said the estate was one of the first worldwide to cater to the LGBTI community and was something that was greatly needed. “I am gay and I don’t want to die alone,” he said. “My sister has kids, but I don’t have any. Even if you take the sexuality away, it’s about community. “If you look at the design within the community, there are little communities so people get to know each other and support each other, and that’s what it’s all about.”

Mark Tyrrell doesn’t fight off tyrannical officials or defend villagers against villains, but the Melton father is a superhero in his home town. Mr Tyrrell, a nurse at Bacchus Marsh Medical Centre, donned a Zorro costume last Friday to raise funds and awareness of a condition that’s close to home for him – congenital heart disease. His eldest daughter, Makayla, 8, was diagnosed with the disease at 20 weeks in utero. And it’s been a rollercoaster ride for the Tyrrells ever since. “We went for the 20-week ultrasound and it’s really exciting to see your baby for the first time, hear their heartbeat,” Mr Tyrrell said. “We saw our obstetrician for a follow-up three weeks later and were told there was a problem with our baby’s heart.” Mr Tyrrell hopes the money he raises for the HeartKids Foundation will help researchers better understand the causes and processes of childhood heart disease. Friday was Super Boss Day, an initiative where bosses and staff dress as superheroes to support HeartKids. What caused Makayla’s heart condition is still not known. “At one point, my wife said she doesn’t know what she did wrong – she said she followed everything, like most new mums do. She … did all the right things, and then we found out about Makayla’s condition.” Makayla’s smaller-than-average heart and lower oxygen levels mean a simple cold can

MY PLACE There’s a new doctor in Ballan and her name is Umbreen Qazi. The GP registrar, in her fourth week on the job, spoke to Esther Lauaki about how she’s finding her new role. What’s your connection to Moorabool? I was born in Pakistan but moved to Melbourne in 2011 to do my studies … I did all my training to be a doctor here in Australia. I’m very new to Moorabool. After my studies I was based in Bendigo, training for a year, and then I worked in Melbourne in palliative care before starting my GP training here in Ballan. Why did you choose to become a registrar at Ballan hospital? I chose to work in Ballan because it’s close to Melbourne, but it’s still a rural community. Ballan District Health hospital is also well connected and works closely with a number of specialist services and other hospitals around Victoria. What does your role involve as a GP registrar?

I do exactly what any regular GP does – the only difference is that I’m in training and I have superiors I work alongside. I see patients, manage their conditions and organise tests. What made you want to specialise in aged care?

SPORT Easy win sends Saints to grand final St Anthonys will have the chance to taste premiership glory in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association this weekend. The Saints booked their place in the B-grade grand final with a crushing win against Wallan on Sunday. Despite losing its last three matches of the home-and-away season, a switched-on St Anthonys controlled the semi-final at Arnolds Creek Reserve from its outset. Losing the toss and being given first crack with the new ball, the Saints wasted no time in wasting the Wallan batting. The attack made a hot start and kept the pressure on to dismiss Wallan for 140 in 49 overs. St Anthonys, which is known for its powerful batting line-up, had no trouble reeling in the

target on the back of a half-century from club president Lucas Alaimo and a vital 39 by Paul Scott in a total of 6-142. St Anthonys bowler Shane Newton said the key to the win was sharing the workload. “It was a good all-round performance,” he said. “We had a couple of good batting displays at the end of day one and to start day two, and we’re really happy with the way we played. “Once you’re in the finals, it’s really a new season. I think the best four sides made the finals so it’s essentially us starting a new season with those teams.” St Anthonys’ grand final opponent will be Rupertswood, which booked its place with a huge win over Bacchus Marsh. The Saints met Rupertswood twice during the

home-and-away season, winning one and losing one. Rupertswood won the most recent match, earlier this month, by 112 runs. “We’ll go into this game at full strength,” Newton said. “We’re a very strong batting line-up, as are Rupertswood. We’ll have to be on our game, and likewise for them. We’re looking forward to the challenge.” The winner of the match will also be promoted to the GDCA’s A-grade competition for the McIntyre Cup. Thoroughbreds add class By Liam Twomey Melton basketball has pulled off a stunning recruiting coup on the eve of the Big V season. Already the division 1 defending champions, the Thoroughbreds have signed Melbourne United player Chris Patton. As a back-up centre, Patton averaged six minutes a game for United in the 2015-16 season. Melton coach Grant Spencer said the club originally began talks with Patton when it thought it was going to be promoted into state championship division. Although the Big V knocked back its application, Patton was still keen to sign up with the club. “It’s a great coup for us,” Spencer said. “We’ve now put together a team that exceeds our wildest dreams to compete at division 1 level. “To be able to add Chris to that gives us a strong opportunity to go back-to-back this season.” As well as his NBL achievements, Patton brings a wealth of representative experience to the Thoroughbreds. The 24-year-old, a former SEABL ‘most valuable player’, has also played US college basketball. Patton will predominantly be in the centre, but he can also transition to a forward role. But due to a pre-planned holiday, he may start the season coming off the bench. “His influence early on may be affected in the first couple of weeks,” Spencer said. “He probably won’t start for the first little bit of the season. He will play round one then he’s off on an overseas holiday for three weeks. He will play the rest of the season from round five. I think it will be slow and steady.” The signing of Patton continues Melton’s long-time push to be a leader in Victorian basketball. Although the club’s application for the state championship division wasn’t approved by the Big V, it says it still wants to plan as though it would be playing in the top grade. “We were extremely disappointed with the decision the Big V made,” Spencer said. “The plan, from the board’s point of view, is that they wanted to play state championship. “They’re investing into the program and investing by bringing in some quality players.”

Missing finals fires up Lions Darley will seek to strengthen its batting line-up in the off-season as it continues to strive for a place in the Ballarat Cricket Association finals. The Lions were arguably the unluckiest club in suburban cricket this season, sitting on top of the ladder with one round left in the season only to drop to fifth – and out of the finals – on the back of a loss in that final round. Despite that, Darley coach Heath Pritchard knows his side isn’t that far from challenging for a premiership. “We’ll certainly look to strengthen our side and strengthen our batting,” he said. “There’s no doubt that’s been the issue this year. “It’s a tricky one. We don’t know how far off the mark we are with the batting and we managed to find a way to beat almost everyone we played. “We have to find a way to get 180-200 every week and if we do that I have no doubt we’ll play finals next season.” While the batting was an issue, Darley was clearly one of the best bowling units in BCA’s A-grade. Pritchard led the way in his first year at the club, taking 38 wickets at an average of nine. He was well supported by Bradley Barnes, who shared the new ball and finished with 19 scalps. Sajith Rupasingha and Matthew Cape were also constantly probing in all the right areas. “Bowling-wise, we’ve done a super job,” Pritchard said. Although they missed finals, it was still a much-improved season for the Lions, who finished eighth in 2014-15. But the Lions also became giantkillers, toppling three of the top four sides in the home-and-away season and losing just two of the two-day games. While happy with the improvement, Pritchard says the club needs to get better. “We are coming off a pretty low base. We came third-last the season before, so we’ve made significant ground. “We need to take the next step now. We know we can match it and now it’s time to actually make finals and have a few years of sustained success where we keep putting our hands up. “If we keep doing that, eventually we’ll crack the jackpot.” Liam Twomey

Phoenix primed for title tilt By Liam Twomey Melton Phoenix coach Peter Schwellinger has the feeling that 2016 is going to be a smoother year. This time last season he was preparing for his first year in charge at the state league 4 club and was getting used to new players, different opposition and a fresh game plan. Twelve months later, the club appears to be ready for a tilt at the title. Schwellinger says he’s ultra-impressed with the way his players have attacked the pre-season. “I know a lot of the opposition now, but what’s more important is knowing my own team,” he says. “I know the guys really well. I know the characters and I know what I can do with them and what I can’t do with them. That’s a big bonus. “It took a few months last year to find that out. “We started training two or three weeks earlier this year and I think we’re way ahead because of that.” Melton is coming off a tough 2015 when it finished seventh on the ladder with eight wins. If pre-season form is anything to go by, the Phoenix are in for a much-improved 2016. They have handsomely defeated Gisborne, Melbourne City and Altona City in practice matches and smashed Noble Park 9-0 in the first round of the nationwide FFA Cup. “We’re scoring a lot of goals and not conceding many so it’s looking very good,” Schwellinger said. “My expectation is a top-four finish. I want to progress slowly and not rush things. We’re in the second year of a three-year plan and

with the quality we have and the way we’re playing, top four is definitely achievable.” Melton played the second round of its FFA Cup campaign on Saturday, edging out Sporting Whittlesea in a penalty shootout at MacPherson Park.

MOTOR Picasso’s a touch of modern art Buyers looking for something that doesn’t follow convention and who appreciate a real touch of French flair should certainly have the latest Citroen C4 Picasso on their short (often very short) list of potential cars. Just what is the Citroen C4 Picasso? It’s hard to define, being a mixture of a tall hatchback and a people mover, with a touch of SUV thrown in for good measure. It looks like nothing else on the road. Most of its upper surfaces are glass. From its huge windscreen, that almost merges into a super-sized sunroof, and through to the sleek rear glass, the compact French people mover defies convention. Inside, there are fascinating curves, facets and materials. Many in the dashboard area are fashioned around the big electronic screens. A large screen in the centre of the dash displays the main instruments. Lower down, a smaller screen in a more conventional position looks after air conditioning, audio and other minor tasks. The Citroen C4 Picasso has a good range of standard equipment, with keyless entry and start-stop, automatic headlights and wipers, LED daytime running lamps and foglamps. The Lounge Pack has part-leather seats, “relax style” headrests, LED light for tray tables on the backs of the front seats, fronts seats with electric lumbar support and massage function and electric foot rest for the front passenger ($2000). The C4 Picasso is powered by a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol unit that produces 120 kilowatts.

All imported Picassos run six-speed auto transmission to the front wheels. The Drive Assist pack has lane departure warning, smart beam function, active cruise control, anti-collision warning, active seat belts and electro-chromatic rear vision mirror. All are worthwhile items and we suggest spending the extra $2000 makes sense. Driving the C4 Picasso is a different experience.

Not only do you have that goldfish bowl in front of you, the gear lever is in an unusual spot on the top-right of the steering wheel. It takes a bit of becoming accustomed to, so we suggest a longer than average test drive if you’ve never been in a Citroen before. Luggage space is good, 537 litres with the rear seats back, 630 with them all the way forward. And the seats can be folded flat. Citroen Picasso’s ride comfort is everything you expect

from a French car – smooth and quiet to the point of serenity. Handling is safe enough, but tall hatches never feel as good as standard height ones due to the higher centre of gravity. With a starting price of $40,990 the Citroen falls into the same category as BMW’s 2 Series Active Tourer and Mercedes-Benz’s big-selling B-Class. ■
