Prayers for orphaned teens Jesus and Alma Remo were the type of people who would drop everything to help others without expecting anything in return. They were community-minded, willing to give a hand at any time and loving parents to their three teenage children, according to those who knew them. The Melton South mother, 39, and father, 43, were killed in a head-on collision between their Mazda 4WD and a truck on Hopkins Road, Truganina, last Thursday. Two others, including the couple’s 19-year-old daughter Jessa, were taken to

hospital. Jessa yesterday remained in a stable condition at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Pastor Michael De Los Reyes, of the World of Life Christian Church at Rockbank, where the Remos were active parishioners, remembered the couple as community-spirited and very welcoming. “Jess – that was his nickname – and Alma were pretty much committed to their Christian life and they’re a really wholesome family,” Mr De Los Reyes said. “Whenever you asked Jess for a favour – to fix your car for example – he wouldn’t hesitate to help out without getting paid.” Mr De Los Reyes said the Remos’ deaths were a tragedy for everyone who knew them,

including the wider Filipino and World of Life Church communities, where they were well regarded. News of their death came as a huge shock to the church, Mr De Los Reyes said, with the fellowship “gutted” by the tragedy. The Filipino community and the church are in contact with the couple’s children, who have no other family in Australia. “We’ve arranged some of our volunteers to have a meeting with the children to see what the church can help them out with,” Mr De Los Reyes said. “They’re left without their parents. It’s unbelievable. My heart goes out to them. “We’re supporting them and praying for them.”

Detective Sergeant Mark Amos, of the police’s major collision investigation unit, said two trucks, both carrying trailers, and three four-wheel-drives had been involved in a string of collisions, which culminated in the fatal head-on crash. Truck drivers said the road conditions on Thursday morning were particularly dangerous after overnight rain followed days of heat. Police are calling on any witnesses to Thursday’s crash to call 1800 333 000. VicRoads data shows that in the five years to 2012, there were 28 crashes, including one fatal, along the busy Hopkins Road. – with The Age

Action call on ‘risky’ Calder By Sumeyya Ilanbey The Calder Action Group has echoed calls for an overpass at “high-risk” Calder Park Drive. Group president Ian Sutherland is backing a petition, started by local federal Labor MPs, calling for federal funding for the overpass at the Calder Park Drive and Calder Freeway intersection. Mr Sutherland said traffic congestion and safety issues would be solved if the state and federal governments started work on an

overpass that had been campaigned for at least a decade. He said an 80km/h speed restriction on most of the Calder Freeway section had been recently removed and replaced with a 100km/h limit. “But the section around Calder Park Drive and the racecourse is still risky enough for VicRoads to require a lower speed limit. “When there’s a big event happening at the racecourse, it can be hair-raising for drivers.” With population growth and the emergence of new suburbs, an overpass at the busy

intersection should be on the list of priorities for the federal government, Mr Sutherland said. “This is a strong local issue that goes as far as Bendigo and as [far] back as 10 years.” He said that while he was “terribly grateful” for the federal Labor Opposition’s support, he was disappointed the party hadn’t made a financial commitment to the overpass going into an election. Gorton Labor MP Brendan O’Connor, who initiated the petition, said an overpass would “enormously” advantage his electorate

improving the “capacity and safety of the road”. Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister Darren Chester said the federal government contributed money towards upgrades along the Calder Freeway, but the overpass was a matter for the state. “To date, the project has not been prioritised by the state government for funding consideration.” To sign the petition, visit goo.gl/sxg0ju. Clamps on fuel theft on way Drivers could soon be pre-paying for fuel in a bid to pip petrol thieves at the pump. A state government report, released last week by the Law Reform, Road and Community Safety Committee, made eight recommendations to tackle the problem of drive-off fuel thefts. Key recommendations include; a statewide education campaign, driven by Victoria Police, Crime Stoppers Victoria and the fuel retail industry; and regular forums for police and retailers to discuss ways of dealing with fuel drive-offs. Victoria Police will also develop a guide for fuel retailers on drive-off prevention, while the state government will consider measures to implement pre-payment. The recommendations come after yet another petrol drive-off at Bacchus Marsh on March 1. Bacchus Marsh police are looking for a man and woman who drove into the Gisborne Road service station at 6.02pm in a blue Ford Festiva, filled up with fuel and then drove off in the vehicle, whose registration plates were XY406. The woman is described as having blonde hair, which was tied up at the time of the theft, and a tattooed line of writing across her upper back. Committee chairman Geoff Howard said its report was the culmination of an inquiry that heard from industry, government, law enforcement and community representatives. “A partnership approach is important in dealing with fuel drive-offs and the theft of fuel,” Mr Howard said. Pair pay damages for fake apparel By Ben Cameron Two owner-operators of a Cairnlea fashion store have been ordered to pay almost $130,000 in damages for their “flagrant” selling of counterfeit clothing. A sentence hearing on February 12 in the Federal Circuit Court of Australia revealed Xzite stores at Cairnlea and Bacchus Marsh, run by Mohamed Kaleel Abdul Cader and Raziudeen Safifdeen, sold counterfeit G-Star clothing. On October 12, 2012, inquiry agent Victoria

Evans noticed about 100 G-Star-branded shirts on display at Cairnlea and a further 50-odd at the Bacchus Marsh store. A further visit to the Cairnlea store on March 20, 2013, revealed “in excess of 200 garments in the back room”, which appeared to resemble G-Star apparel. On July 25, 2013, Evans went to a storage unit in Makland Drive, Derrimut, operated by the accused, where she was told by Cader there were “only about 200 units of G-Star stock left”. The court heard that Cader also distributed goods to Highpoint, Coburg, Plenty Valley, Mill Park, Altona and Broadmeadows.

More than 150 G-Star clothing items were eventually seized on July 31, 2013, from the Cairnlea store. An expert in G-Star clothing, Cameron Heymans, told the hearing the men were selling counterfeit goods. “I know G-Star inside out,” he said. Judge Phillip Burchardt said both Sarifdeen and Cader were “intimately involved” with the business. “The reality is that both Mr Cader and Mr Safifdeen ran this enterprise,” he said. “[They] well knew that the garments they

were importing were counterfeit … it was indeed a cynical and serious breach of the law. The evidence … shows that, whatever the amounts of G-Star the respondent dealt, it was substantially in excess of what they have admitted. It is not possible to say exactly how much the quantum was.” He also criticised Cader’s “evasive” evidence. The men were ordered to pay the three applicants, including G-Star Raw and G-Star Australia, $8,941.42 damages for loss of sales, $20,000 for damage to reputation, and $100,000 for further costs.

Fiji has a friend in Erin Miss Bonehill worked at the Pacific Harbour Multi-Cultural School in Fiji from May to November last year helping children read. She heard about the volunteer program for 17 to 24-year-olds while in year 12 at Bacchus Marsh Grammar, and is now about to start child care studies. “I’ve always wanted to be a teacher and travel the world, so the exchange was an opportunity to do both and I couldn’t let it pass by,” she said. “I loved spending time with the kids, and watching them grow and start to enjoy reading was the best part of my trip.” Miss Bonehill, an avid netballer, also taught the children to play on a dirt court. Erin Bonehill works nearly seven days a week because she’s determined to fly to Fiji later this year – but not to tan herself at a tropical resort. The Melton West 19-year-old put all her earnings from a part-time job last year into self-funding a six-month volunteer trip to work with disadvantaged children in Fiji through Latitude Global Volunteering. She says she’s itching to get back there again this year to help out the friends she now calls “family”, especially since the category five cyclone Winston ravaged the islands on February 20. “I was heartbroken when I heard the news about cyclone Winston,” Miss Bonehill says. “I wanted to fly there straight away … I felt so helpless because they are my family now. “I’ve been able to skype them and, thankfully, all my kids and my friends back in Fiji are fine … but there are villages around the Pacific Harbour that still need help.”

Touched by signs of time Quilts dating back to World War I will be on display at Ballan next weekend. Ballan Red Cross president Anne Eskdale (pictured) said the quilts originated from a fundraising drive for soldiers during the First World War, and were then donated to hospitals to be used on soldiers’ beds. People were encouraged to purchase a ‘square’ for sixpence, sign it, and then hand it back to the women sewing the squares together to build the quilts. “They were so practical,” Ms Eskdale said. “Not only were they done as a fundraising drive, but they were also used for wounded soldiers. And, with some of the readings I’ve done, families went without to give to the Red Cross, so their sons would get a parcel.”

There’s something eerie about looking at and touching something with so much sentimental value and history, Ms Eskdale said. “When we touched – with our gloves on – those signatures on the quilts, it was quite moving,” she said. “All those people have lived lives, but are now gone.” The quilts will be on display from Friday, March 18, to Sunday, March 20, 10am until 4pm, at Millrose Quilting & Gallery, 92 Inglis Street, Ballan. Man charged with murder

A Melton man charged with murder has been remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court today. Homicide Squad detectives charged the 24-year-old following the discovery of a body in a Unitt Street house on Sunday night. Paramedics were called to the property about 7pm and performed CPR but a 20-year-old woman could not be revived. The man appeared before an out of sessions court hearing on Monday morning.

Council most female-friendly By Esther Lauaki Melton council is setting the standard across the state for gender diversity in local government. The council topped a state government list of female-to-male ratios, released last week. Five of its seven councillors are women. Melton mayor Kathy Majdlik said keeping residents well informed about ways they could serve was a key to gender diversity on council. “It’s wonderful for the city of Melton to be recognised in this way,” she said. “Melton is a progressive community that encourages and values diversity and inclusion, and this has been reflected in the number of women standing at council elections. “I believe it’s important to have a good mix of skills and abilities, ideas and attitudes, and that equal gender representation is vitally important,” Cr Majdlik said. “Melton council facilitates two meetings for residents interested in standing for council. The community and candidate information sessions are run by the Municipal Association of Victoria. “For parents of young children interested in standing for council, there are childcare supports available for councillors … I believe Melton council pioneered this childcare provision in Victoria.” Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins said it was high time councils became more representative. “The Labor government is urging women across Victoria to consider standing as

candidates this October to ensure our councils better reflect our communities,” she said. “It’s unacceptable that in 2016 women still make up only about a third of all councillors and still don’t reach the senior management levels in their organisations. “Improving the representation of women at the senior level in both public and private sectors is a key priority for the Labor government and one we work tirelessly to achieve.”

The list revealed that only 34.9 per cent of all Victorian councillors were women. While 60.81 per cent of all workers in local government were women, only 16.5 per cent were chief executive officers. Moorabool eastern ward councillor Tonia Dudzik was one of two females on the seven councils at the bottom end of the female-tomale scale. The state government allocated $50,000 this year towards a Go Women Local Government project aimed at increasing the number of female candidates across the state. The additional funding will build on past support for encouraging women from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to consider nominating as candidates.

Help for every walk of life Caroline Springs and Melton folk will come together this weekend in a bid to promote gender equality and help end violence against women. The Walk With Her event, initiated by newly formed group Melton Women Making it Happen, is aimed at raising awareness of domestic violence and challenging attitudes that support it. Representatives of Djerriwarrh Health Services, Melton council, Victoria Police and Caroline Springs Square will join community members, young and old, in taking a stand against violence. Djerriwarrh Health Services chief executive Andrew Freeman said violence against women

could be prevented, but it was everyone’s responsibility to change attitudes, and cultures, associated with violence. “We believe violence against women is a serious, prevalent and preventable epidemic that won’t be stopped by one person, one organisation or one action alone,” Mr Freeman said. “It needs a concerted, long-term sustained effort.” Mr Freeman said men had an important role to play in challenging the attitudes and behaviours that condone violence. ‘Cancel it’ call on coal licence By Sumeyya Ilanbey The Moorabool Environment Group is urging state Industry, Energy and Resources Minister Lily D’Ambrosio to cancel a Bacchus Marsh coal exploration licence. As revealed by Star Weekly last month, the exploration licence of mining companies Mantle Mining and Exergen for the 154square-kilometre Bacchus Marsh Coal Project is set to expire next Tuesday. But environment group president Ben Courtice is calling on Ms D’Ambrosio to cancel

the licence which, he says, could have severe repercussions for Moorabool residents and farmers. Mr Courtice said he didn’t believe coal exploration, or mining, was appropriate for Bacchus Marsh. “[A mine] is going to be a big, new source of greenhouse gas emissions when the world needs less and not more,� he said. “We’re very concerned for the dust and water contamination and how that will impact on nearby communities.� Mr Courtice said the group hoped Bacchus Marsh’s horticulture and farming practices

would be maintained and expanded, but coal exploration was “incompatible with these objectives�. “Coal is last century’s energy source,� he said. “We want Victoria to move into the future with clean energy, a healthy agricultural sector, and a plan to combat climate change. Now that the exploration licence is coming to an end, we ask Minister D’Ambrosio to cancel the licence and review the threat that has been hovering on the horizon of our community.� Mantle Mining coal exploration manager

Mark Maxwell said he respected the environment group’s decision to write and request the licence cancellation. “The department or the minister is not bound to renew the licence, but I would be surprised if it didn’t,� Mr Maxwell said. “We haven’t finalised our exploration or reassessment of the resource.� A spokeswoman for Ms D’Ambrosio wouldn’t be drawn on whether the minister would intervene in the issue but said: “The minister will thoroughly consider the issues raised in the letter.�

Equal in law ‌ and life Southern Cross Grammar students say equality is something they’re lucky to have at school. A group of 30 middle school students from the Caroline Springs campus last week attended the Young Women and Men: Driving Gender Balance Together forum in Balwyn as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Victoria program. The aim of the event was to help young people understand the meaning of gender balance, and to think critically about gender stereotypes. The forum featured a panel of leaders who shared their views on how to empower and invest in youth in the future. Middle school teacher Darren Brilliant said it was the first time the school had been involved in a forum about helping young boys and girls know what gender equality means. “The kids have grown up in quite an equitable culture and environment,â€? he said. “Some of them might not have been aware

that gender equality is even an issue out in the world, and especially in places like the workforce – and they might have only been exposed to it through explicit teaching of the topic in school.� Year 9 student Kasey Mercieca says she hadn’t experienced gender inequality, but was keen to learn how she could help others who had. “I know what it is and I know that it happens in the workforce and in sports sometimes,� she says. “I’m grateful that everyone at my school treats boys and girls equally.� Duke of Edinburgh Victoria chief executive Anoushka Gungadin says the issue is spread worldwide. “Gender inequality sometimes starts at home, often continues in the playground and definitely shows up in the workplace,� she says. Secret council business probed By Sumeyya Ilanbey The Victorian ombudsman has launched an investigation into local government accountability amid a flood of complaints to the watchdog. More than 70 complaints about Melton council were made to the ombudsman in the past financial year. Star Weekly last year revealed more than a quarter of Melton council decisions were made behind closed doors in 2014, compared with the state average of 12.2 per cent and the interface fringe councils’ average of 19.27 per cent. Ombudsman Deborah Glass’s investigation will scrutinise whether councils’ decisionmaking processes are transparent. The probe will cover closed council meetings, special meetings, handling of confidential matters and the public availability of records. Ms Glass’s investigation comes as the state government launches a review into the Local Government Act. In her submission to the review, Ms Glass said: “Secrecy in government can create conditions in which improper conduct and poor administration can flourish. It also fuels suspicions of wrongdoing and erodes community trust. “ Melton council acting general manager Luke Shannon welcomed the investigation and said he believed the council, overall, was transparent. “Council is committed to transparent decision making in the best interests of our community,� he said. “Council welcomes the ombudsman’s investigation in the hope that the principles of transparency and good governance can be further improved.�

Diversity weaves a finer fabric Melton residents are being invited to share their food, traditions and stories at Kurunjang Secondary College’s Cultural Diversity Day. The school will open its doors on Friday to celebrate multiculturalism and promote understanding. The college’s leading ‘connectedness’ teacher, Tegan Aquilina, says: “It’s about celebrating our students and our differences, and learning from them. Everyone brings something different from their culture ‌ it’s nice to get a rounded view on things.â€? The event will include cultural arts and crafts workshops and exhibitions, cooking demonstrations, sports clinics and music performances. “The celebrations encourage conversations that perhaps wouldn’t happen otherwise,â€? Ms Aquilina said. “It’s about gaining the knowledge of what’s out there, knowing that everyone is different.â€? SOS crew needs a hand By Esther Lauaki Blackwood’s community emergency response team needs public help. The team is made up of volunteers who provide emergency first-aid at car accidents, motor bike accidents in the bush, at homes, for the elderly in care, children at sports venues and anyone who needs urgent help in Moorabool and surrounding areas. Response team president Leonie Brasier last week launched an online crowdfunding campaign on Go Fund Me, with the aim of raising $30,000 for a garage to store the team’s vehicle and equipment. “We need to build a garage for the vehicle, storage and for training of our volunteers,” Ms Brasier said. “We need $30,000 by the end of April to do this before winter sets in. “We’re all volunteers who have been trained by Ambulance Victoria to render emergency first aid in our area. “We can often get there before the ambulance and can give immediate assistance, like dress a wound, administer pain relief, stabilise a patient or call for assistance,” she said. “The service has been running for about 13 years, and we have a 4WD vehicle so we can get to medical emergencies quickly, but we have nowhere secure to keep it and the life-saving equipment inside.” Ms Brasier said the only training facilities nearby were the Country Fire Authority headquarters at Blackwood, but this was already filled up. “This is not just for the Ballan and Bacchus Marsh area, but for within the Moorabool Shire,” she said. “A garage will help our CERT volunteers to keep providing this service in all weathers and conditions.” Details: www.gofundme.com/blackwoodcert

Pothole peeves council, drivers Melton council has called on Bunnings to urgently repair and modify the Barries Road driveway into its Melton West store. At last week’s meeting, Coburn ward councillor Sophie Ramsey moved that the council write to Bunnings and QIC – managers of Woodgrove shopping centre – to repair the east-facing driveway. In her motion, Cr Ramsey said the driveway had a pothole and was a “safety hazard”. Council officers reported they had written to Bunnings four years ago raising concerns about the condition of the driveway entrance. “To date, no action has been taken by Bunnings to address council’s concerns,” their report states. “Council officers will write to QIC and owners of Melton Bunnings requesting urgent repairs and modification of the eastern access driveway at the Melton Bunnings site to make it safer for patrons and other road users, and allow for better vehicle ingress and egress.” Woodgrove centre manager Greg Balmforth said they were “taking steps” to repair “a small section” of the driveway. “Woodgrove shopping centre is committed to remediating the driveways as part of our ongoing maintenance.” Bunnings property general manager Andrew Marks conceded the driveway needed repair. He said the western access had been upgraded in 2014.

Gonski cuts threaten strugglers By Sumeyya Ilanbey A Melton school principal fears programs to help struggling students get back on track will disappear if the federal government does not commit to funding the final two years of the Gonski education reforms. Melton Secondary College principal David Reynolds said a recent state Education Department analysis revealed schools in Melton would miss out on almost $13 million in 2018 and 2019. Mr Reynolds said his school had been investing, thanks to current

Gonski funding, in extra literacy, numeracy and wellbeing classes for students who were academically behind their peers. The school has already seen improvements since funding began two years ago. “These programs have been a last opportunity for students to catch up on their reading and have a chance of being successful in a Victorian certificate of education course.” Students across the board, but especially in Melton, would bear a heavy burden if funding was cut, Mr Reynolds said. “When they come into high school, or even

primary school, a bit behind their peers, they won’t have those extra programs to catch up to, and grow at the same rate as their peers,” Mr Reynolds said. Melton Secondary College will be one of the biggest losers in the electorate, potentially missing out on $2.8 million over the two years, the analysis predicts. State Education Minister James Merlino called on the federal government to commit to the final years of Gonski, otherwise schools could lose teachers’ and students’ support. “Schools … need the Liberal government to

provide the funding they promised and which our schools desperately need,” Mr Merlino said. Melton MP Don Nardella said Prime Minister Turnbull’s “so-called ideas boom will go completely bust”, unless there is a commitment to fund the Gonski reforms. But federal Education Minister Simon Birmingham called the state government “disingenuous” for cutting its own funding per student to schools and not yet committing its $806 million share of final Gonski funds. “Will Victorian Labor commit,” he asked.

Angelina Luzza is head over heels about children, so when Good Friday comes each year, she drops everything to help the children’s hospital appeal any way she can. This year she’s decided to donate all takings from her newly opened All Round Laundry at Melton to the Good Friday Appeal. “I’ve got a lot of friends with children, and the care they get at the hospital is amazing,” Ms Luzza said. “After donating to them, you do see results. They buy new machines and equipment with the money raised.” She hopes people will get their washing out and donate to the hospital appeal. What was the appeal of setting up a taekwondo club in Melton?

I live in Kurunjang, and I have family who live here in Melton and surrounding areas, as far as Ballarat and Bendigo. involved

I started taekwondo as a young boy and have been training ever since. Now, I have 10 year’s teaching experience.

Why would you encourage people, especially children, to get into a sport like taekwondo?

Can you tell me about your background in the sport?

It’s simple, confidence is the one thing that just about everyone starts taekwondo for, and then self-defence or anti-bullying would have to be the next reasons people start.

Some of my achievements include a third dan black belt, an Australia Day 2015 regional award winner as Coach/Administrator of the Year, four-times national Poomsae champion, and I was a Queensland state champion in taekwondo for five years in a row from 2008. I’m also Kukkiwon registered and have a level one National Coaching Accreditation Scheme accreditation. I’m an experienced referee and have also competed in more than 50 club championships in the last 10 years, and won medals in every event. I’ve had the pleasure of coaching more than 50 state champions and 15 national champion competitors in the past few years.

What is it that you like about the Melton taekwondo community? It is such a diverse community and, although the club is only young here in Melton, it is already starting to get the family atmosphere that we want. We want families to be involved with the club and we take pride in the fact that we encourage this and actively promote it. In fact, we encourage parents to start a class with their children and allow it to be bonding time as a family or maybe father-son, father-daughter [time] or any combination for that matter.

What do you do outside of the sport?

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds a little gem tucked away in Maribyrnong The Mitchell Avenue shops are tucked away and, no doubt, of little interest to the traffic hordes scooting by on Ballarat Road and Churchill Avenue. But there are quite a lot of residents in the area, including a bunch of students. So it figures that a cafe could, and should, do well on the strip, joining Los Latinos, a Vietnamese place and a South American bakery. Jack B. Nimble is that cafe, replacing a long disused bakery. Jack is all done out in light wood and is a sweet place for lunch. The longish breakfast list features all sorts of imaginative line-ups, starring such ingredients as house-smoked fish, grilled asparagus, white pudding and cauliflower. The lunch roll-out is much briefer – just a daily salad, two sandwiches and a pasta are on the blackboard. So … we each choose one of the sandwiches at a fine $10 each. A side of the salad can be had with sanger for $4. We’re tempted, as the mixed grain number on display looks fine – but the presence of pumpkin makes it a non-starter for us. Bennie’s roast beef with caramelised onions, sacmorza (a cow milk cheese) and tomato relish is a good one. The beef is rare and the cheese is gooey. But my number with fish cakes, kale,

From the baked finery on the front counter, we choose to share an apple, nectarine and apricot muffin ($4). It, too, is superb – more in your decadent cake department, moist and delicious. SPORT Saints in catch-up mode as Rupertswood holds its line Two of Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s most powerful B-grade batting line-ups squared off in the competition’s grand final, which finishes this weekend. At the halfway point of the match, the honours are with Rupertswood, which has so far held the edge over St Anthonys for most of the match. After winning the toss, Rupertswood had no hesitation batting first, and the call paid dividends. Intent on spending as long as possible in the middle, Rupertswood occupied the crease all Saturday and a large portion of Sunday on its way to 211.

Middle order duo Mark Ryan and Kyahl Anderson set the standard, batting for a combined 280 balls to produce a 100-run stand. Anderson finished his side’s top-scorer with 76, while Ryan made 21. There were some highlights for St Anthonys as it continued to toil hard with the ball. With the score at 2-131, the Saints were able to produce a mini fight-back as stumps were drawn on day one. The Saints removed both set batsmen and were able to run out Karl Sutherland, as Rupertswood lost three for three. Returning on day two at 5-152, Rupertswood continued the same slow and steady approach

adding another 59 runs before being bowled out. In reply, St Anthonys was on the back foot from the early stages of its innings. The Saints slumped to 3-7 and were playing catch-up for the rest of Sunday. Still trailing by 131 runs, St Anthonys will have five wickets in hand when play resumes this week. Barker saves his Burras By Tara Murray Honours were shared on the opening two days of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup grand final. The Diggers Rest Bulla players showed no nerves as they chased a first McIntyre Cup title for the club, and they were in control early against Gisborne. Playing coach Kevin Barker came out firing, reaching his century within 24 overs. Once his innings of 118 ended, the Burras struggled to get runs. They were 7-205 after day one. The Dragons grabbed the last three wickets for 10 runs on Sunday to dismiss the Burras for 215. Jay King was the pick of the bowlers with 4-53 off 25 overs. The Dragons struggled early and looked in trouble at 5-93. A late partnership between Tahir Afridi and playing coach Simon Harmon ensured the Dragons got back in the game and at stumps, they were 5-129 with Afridi 22 not out and Harmon on 20. Skipper Jarryd Vernon made 25. Barker said the late partnership between Afridi and Harmon had put the game back on even terms. “They put together a little partnership, which was disappointing for us,” he said. “We thought if we could get one or two more quick wickets we’d get into the tail a bit. “But that’s cricket finals – there’s always fight from both sides.” Barker said the Burras would have been happy to post 215 at the start of the innings but then would have liked a few more runs after the promising start. He said it was personally satisfying to post a good score after enduring a patchy season to date after returning to the GDCA from sub-district cricket. “I got a few away and got on a roll and things went my way,” he said. “Personally, it wasn’t the season I wanted to have, but it’s good to score a century … yet it doesn’t mean anything now if we don’t get the win. “From the position we were in I would have liked a few more runs. We will back our bowlers in to do the job.” As for much of the season, the Burras’ bowlers shared the workload and the honours. Lindon Dowsett took two wickets, while three bowlers took one each. Barker said early wickets would be the key to restricting the Dragons on Saturday. “They fought hard to stop us to get a roll on,” he said. “There’s a new ball 15 overs away – it will be a good contest.”

Phoenix back to business after cup exit Melton’s FFA Cup campaign came to an end when the Phoenix were eliminated from the knock-out competition by Sunbury United at the weekend. The state league 4 outfit was far from disgraced though, going toe-to-toe with their more fancied opponents for the full 90 minutes. After keeping Sunbury goal-less for the first half, the two teams went into the sheds locked at 0-0. Melton then hit the front shortly after the resumption of play. The goal came through striker Jordan Borg. Sunbury, which plays in state league 2, refused to panic, and hit back shortly afterwards. United scored twice within five minutes, with Djafari Mwarabu the first man to find the back of the net. His goal came at the 60th minute mark, and Jake McIntyre added a second shortly afterwards. Despite its best efforts, Melton was unable to find an equaliser. Melton coach Peter Schwellinger was impressed with his side’s efforts against the higher-ranked Sunbury. “I think we matched them throughout the match … we were pretty unlucky to lose,” he said. “We just had one defensive error from a handball, which led to a penalty. “We didn’t get the result this time, but I think it was a great FFA Cup for us,” Schwellinger said. “We played two sides from state league 2. We were able to knock one of them out [Sporting Whittlesea], and we pushed another one all the way, and came close to knocking them out as well.” Melton’s attention turns now to its state league season. The Phoenix start their campaign with an away fixture against Altona North next month, before hosting Point Cook in round two. Schwellinger said it was important for his side not to drop in its intensity. “We need to be careful now, going back to state league 4, that we don’t take it easy,” he said. “You can’t drop your level … and there is always a danger of that. “We need to get out there and play every game with the mentality we have shown. “We need to play our game. “We shouldn’t worry about other teams,” Schwellinger said. “We want other teams to be worrying about us.” Liam Twomey 51 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 15, 2016

Rebuilt Burras eye finals By Liam Twomey

Rockbank will field both a senior and a reserves team in the Riddell District Football League this season. The Rams have been searching for players throughout the off-season to top off their playing list and rumours were circulating that the club may be able to field only one. But AFL Goldfields region manager Rod Ward said the club had enough numbers for two. “They [the club] want to stabilise the club’s off-field position and are working with a reduced budget as part of that,” he said. “That’s with a view to strengthening that financial position and that’s commendable. “It may cause them to lose players in the short term but they’re now in a position where we can confirm they will be fielding two sides. “We have kept open and ongoing discussions with [president] Mark Smith and coach Gavin Sporle. “We’re pleased with where things are at for the moment.” Rockbank will begin its 2016 campaign with an away fixture against Melton Centrals at Arnolds Creek Reserve at 5pm on April 9. The club’s opening home game will be against Woodend Hesket on April 23, with the first bounce at 2pm. The Rams are still looking for more players. A new-look Diggers Rest looms as a potential dark horse in the Riddell District Netball League this season. The Burras will be putting out an A-grade outfit with five new faces in its starting seven. The players come from a range of clubs, including Lancefield and Romsey. While she wasn’t able to confirm signings just yet, Diggers Rest coach Amy Carroll said it had been a great off-season for the club after finishing seventh last year. “We had our try-outs in December and we’ve had a fantastic number of girls come across,” she said. “A lot of them just heard about the trials and turned up, which was great. “The A-grade side will be completely different. I think there are only two players returning from last year,” Carroll said. “That’s a benefit because it has flowed on to B-grade and C-grade and made those teams quite strong.” Throughout an off-season full of positives, it’s the type of recruit Diggers Rest has been able to attract that has Carroll excited. The Burras have welcomed a host of young players into the fold and the club is hoping they will stick together for years to come. “It’s difficult for Diggers Rest … because it’s such a small community, it can be hard to attract players who are in that age group you need,” Carroll said. “A few of the girls have actually played together throughout their careers already so they sort of have a bit of teamwork there, which is great.” Carroll said finals were well and truly the goal. Diggers Rest will play practice matches against Gisborne and Melton South in the lead-up to a blockbuster round-one clash. “We have to make finals. Only time will tell, but I feel like we should be pushing for that.” Amy Carroll will lead Diggers Rest netball again this season. (Shawn Smits)

MOTOR Mazda bumps off Corolla’s crown There’s myriad 4x4 utes on the Australian market. To the uninitiated they all look the same but for a badge, and they all do their job reasonably well … however, what sets them apart is reputation and brand loyalty. It’s the latter that probably hasn’t been too kind to Mazda’s stake in the market. While Mazda has achieved the unthinkable in knocking the Toyota Corolla off its perch with the Mazda 3, you can’t see its big-rugged BT-50 ute doing the same to Toyota’s all-conquering Hilux. That’s not to say the BT-50 isn’t as good. While it’s a big chunky ute with a diesel engine, it’s actually quite refined in terms of interior styling, ride and comfort. The suspension is a little springy, as you’d expect for a true 4WD, but the handling is smooth, and the 3.2-litre five-cylinder (yes, five) turbo diesel gives it plenty of grunt – it’s surprisingly nimble from a standing start. The automatic transmission in the XTR model I test-drove was excellent, and made off-road driving a lot easier. It’s also pretty fuel efficient, giving you around 10 litres/100kms combined driving (a bit less or more depending on payload), which is great going for a two-tonne ute. The interior finish manages to balance blue-collar ruggedness with the quality you’ll find in Mazda passenger cars. It feels like an SUV, but you won’t feel compelled to take your work boots off before climbing in. The front seats only have basic adjustments,

but are comfortable, with good back support – important if you spend much of your working week behind the wheel. The rear seats in the freestyle cab are rudimentary, and you wouldn’t want to sit in them for a long drive. They feel like a park

bench and have minimal leg room … okay for apprentices, but forget about taking the family to Kakadu. Of course, the BT-50 does come with a dual cab version that’s one of the roomiest in its class, but this is another story.

The rear seat cushions lift up to give extra storage. I must admit I had the car a few days before realising they were accessible via small rearward opening doors – the fact I didn’t notice them says a lot about the design and build quality. There are plenty of features for a work vehicle, despite a concerted effort to keep the cost down. There’s a touch screen, with the usual phone and entertainment options, a trip computer, and you can install urban and off-road satnav, which is included in the top-spec XTR. The screen doesn’t display the reverse camera image; this shows up in the mirror. I like this concept, but the image is pretty small. The side mirrors, however, are huge. I remember my driving instructor telling me to live in my mirrors – you could almost take him literally with these … they’re excellent. The off-road driving was fun. There’s plenty of clearance and you can be helped in particularly rough terrain with hill-descent control and hill-start assist. On-road safety features include an emergency stop signal (to help avoid rear-ending someone) and trailer sway control, not that you’d often need a trailer – the rear cargo area is huge and will carry around 1400 kilograms. The BT-50 ticks all the boxes, with the added benefit of being cheaper than its Toyota Hilux. Prices for the 4x4 freestyle cab start at $40,990 drive away, while the XTR will set you back $47,990. By comparison, the base model Hilux 4x4 extra cab will cost you $49,246 to drive home, with the model up commensurately more.
