Pick of the bunch Long gone are the days of crouching low to pick a ripe strawberry. Strawberry Forest at Bacchus Marsh recently started growing the summertime favourite vertically, so people can pick them without straining. “The ability to pick from different heights – whether you have a toddler, a bad back and can’t bend, or are 10 feet tall – means there is the perfect strawberry height just for you,” Strawberry Forest’s Tanya (pictured) said. The fruits are grown in PVC pipes, and the aisles are wide enough for wheelchair and pram access. The farm is at 391 The Avenue of Honour, Bacchus Marsh, with the pick-your-own season ending in May. Robbers take a beating By Sumeyya Ilanbey Robberies have halved in Melton in the past 12 months, and a special police taskforce is getting the credit. The latest Crime Statistics Agency figures show there were 34 robbery offences, including armed robbery, in Melton in 2015 compared with 64 the year before. In 2011, Melton had more than 80 robbery offences. Melton’s overall crime rate rose more than 11 per cent in 2015, with the biggest jump in breaches of court orders. Senior Sergeant Cameron Reinke said the Embona taskforce monitored robberies and

known offenders in Melton and Brimbank. Early intervention, before offenders went on crime sprees, and alert businesses installing closed-circuit TV systems were helping to drive the number of offences down, he said. “A lot of the times they are repeat offenders,” Senior Sergeant Reinke added. “But when a crime occurs, we identify the offenders as quickly as possible, locate them and potentially remand them so they can’t commit more offences. We take it very seriously and put a lot of time and effort into it.” Meanwhile, burglaries jumped by 10 per

cent in 2015 and theft was up by 15 per cent, mainly because of car theft and theft from vehicles. Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton told radio station 3AW most of these crimes were committed by youth offenders, in what he dubbed the “grand theft auto generation”. Senior Sergeant Reinke said Melton police had also noticed an increase in youth offenders, but there was no “youth gang culture” in the municipality as in other parts of the state. He said many of the offences committed by teenagers, such as theft, were petty, but some offenders as young as 15 had been charged

with robbery and armed robbery. “There are youths who will commit serious offences,” he said. “Just because of their age, it doesn’t mean the seriousness is diminished.” The 40 per cent increase in court order breaches and 25 per cent rise in stalking could potentially be attributed to the 12 per cent rise in domestic violence, Senior Sergeant Reinke said. Many of the stalking and assault crimes were committed against victims known by their perpetrators. Senior Sergeant Reinke said domestic violence reports were rising because victims were feeling more confident about going to the police.

Park peril for Rockbank homes By Sumeyya Ilanbey Up to 18 properties in Rockbank could be acquired by the state government for a regional park. As part of the Kororoit Precinct Structure Plan (PSP), the state government and Melton council are working with the community on the final boundary of the proposed Kororoit Regional Park. According to a Metropolitan Planning Authority(MPA)reportdistributedtoRockbank and Plumpton homes in November, 2014, the draft boundaries are between Clarke and

Sinclairs roads near the Western Highway. But the park’s final boundaries will be determined by the state government by the end of this year, according to MPA chief executive Peter Seamer. “Once the park boundaries are determined, impacted landowners will be contacted by the Department of Land, Water and Planning to confirm whether or not their land will be required for the regional park,” Mr Seamer said. “If land is identified to be part of the park, owners will be provided with options for selling their land to the Victorian government.”

Mr Seamer said the proposed park was an important feature of the Kororoit PSP and included in the 2013 Biodiversity Conservation Strategy for Melbourne’s Growth Corridors. According to the strategy, the park will: • Establish a small conservation area within the growth corridors to protect “natural temperate grassland”. • Include a small conservation area for the habitat of the spiny rice flower and golden sun moth. • Ensure no substantial negative changes will occur to known populations of the small golden moths orchid.

• Be an area suitable for growling grass frogs. Melton council’s city design, strategy and environment manager, Laura Jo Mellan, said the park was vital to meeting the city’s recreational needs. “The state government, through its agencies the MPA, Parks Victoria and Department of Land, Water and Planning, will determine the location of the boundaries,” she said. “We are working with the MPA to get the best outcome for the community.” The state government was contacted for comment.

Royal seal of approval for new home (Supplied)

Despite heavy rain, it was an exciting Friday for the 1st Caroline Springs Scouts Group, which hosted royalty as it celebrated the start of work on its new activity centre. World Scout Foundation chairman King Carl the sixteenth Gustaf of Sweden was meant to turn the first sod for a $100 million regional Scout Adventure Activity Centre at the Burnside Recreation Reserve. But the rain meant the ceremony had to be held indoors at the Catholic Regional College Sydenham campus. The centre will be the new home for the 1st Caroline Springs Scout Group’s 150 members. The king heard of the Scouts’ grand plans for the western suburbs. The group is excited to be moving into a bigger space, with the hope of doubling membership numbers, after having outgrown its “small” building in Kings Park. Scouts Victoria chief commissioner Brendan Watson said the Burnside site was ideal for the regional Scout hub as the area was witnessing a population boom. Melton council has applied to the state government through the Interface Growth Fund for a $500,000 grant towards building the centre and is finalising lease terms for the site. Mayor Kathy Majdlik said the Scout group was an important part of the community, having “grown from strength to strength”. The regional Scout hub will include activity space and equipment storage areas, an adventure learning program centre, kitchen, meeting rooms, office, and toilets. King Carl also lunched with Catholic Regional College student leaders in the school’s hospitality training restaurant.

Tributes to a ‘good mum’ Friends of a young Melton mother found dead last week have described her as a good person with “a kind heart”. The body of 20-year-old law student Jackie Deng (pictured) was found in a Unitt Street house on March 13. Police believe Ms Deng moved into the unit two months ago with her two-yearold son. Tributes continue to flow online for her. A friend said she was a “good girl” and a “good mum”. Another post said: “It’s been a rough night knowing I lost an older sister; she was an older sister I never had. “Her and I were very close; she told me great advice. “She doesn’t deserve to be taken so young, she was a kind heart and a loving girl. “No one knows how much I cried last night, still awake till now praying … Life is not fair, but I truly know God has her beautiful soul in a better place.” A 24-year-old Melton man has been charged with her murder and remanded in custody to appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court on July 19.

Rural and regional areas are doing it particularly - Tony Nicholson tough

’’

Brotherhood executive director Tony Nicholson said the nation owed young people a “better deal”. “Rural and regional areas are doing it particularly tough,” he said. “It’s deeply concerning that some 258,000 young people in the labour market across the nation are unable to find work. “In ‘hot spots’, the job search is much harder for them. “Digging into the data, we find some regions bearing a much heavier burden than others. Our globalised economy makes it hard for young people to find entry-level jobs. “This generational issue needs sustained attention on all fronts: schools, vocational training and universities as well as welfare assistance and employment programs.”

(Shawn Smits)

Youth unemployment in Melton is the highest in Victoria. Figures released on March 15 reveal that the outer western suburbs are under the most pressure in Victoria for job seekers aged 15 to 24. The Australian Bureau of Statistics data analysed by anti-poverty organisation the Brotherhood of St Laurence for its Australia’s Youth Unemployment Hotspots: Snapshot shows that youth unemployment in Victoria was 14.2 per cent at December 31. Parts of Melton’s eastern fringe and parts of Moorabool were among the regions that fared the worst with unemployment rates soaring as high as 17.3 per cent in Melton and 15.5 per cent in Ballan. Employment service Matchworks Melton manager Daniel Reid said the odds were often stacked against the area’s young people. “I’m not surprised at all by these figures,” he said. “I’ve worked in a number of different areas and it does seem to me that there are a lot more issues relating to youth unemployment in Melton than other places I’ve worked. “There are certainly some issues around transport which limit the opportunities that young people can access particularly if they’re in the city,” he said. “We do have the manufacturing precinct in Melton, which is accessible by public transport, but even those jobs are limited.” Melton’s four-week Matchworks XLR8 program, aimed at job seekers aged 15 to 21,

helps participants engage with their local community while addressing ongoing barriers to employment. The state’s 14.2 per cent unemployment rate for 15 to 24-year-olds is more than twice the overall unemployment rate in Victoria of 6.1 per cent. The national youth unemployment rate is 12.2 per cent, down from a high of almost 14 per cent at December, 2014, but still well up on the level before the global financial crisis in 2008 when it dipped below 9 per cent.

High hopes at deep end Corey Pace has set his standards, and the bar, high. The Toolern Vale teenager and eight others will represent Australia in the junior B division when they head to Europe next month for the Amsterdam Diving Cup. And Corey hopes to come back with gold. His diving journey started only four years ago when he began training at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre in Albert Park. After a 12-month break, the 15-year-old has made a splash in his comeback, having been crowned as one of Diving Australia’s junior B boys champions for 2015-16. “[The hardest part] is there’s lots of training involved … and it’s quite a long drive to the centre every day,” Corey says. “But I like the end result.

“To represent Australia is the main idea for me.” And after Amsterdam? “The 2020 Tokyo Olympics are the main aim. And, hopefully, I’ll have my name out there as well.” The Amsterdam Diving Cup will be Corey’s first international competition. He wants that gold for Australia but needs sponsors, and about $7500, for airfares and accommodation. His mum, Deborah, hopes Melton people will rally behind Corey. “When anyone, in any sport, gets chosen to represent their country it’s a big deal,” she says. A GoFundMe page has been set up. Growing up in country Victoria taught Bruce Hynam to be a straight shooter. The Darley clay target shooter now has his sights set on gold at the Victorian Emergency Services Games next month. Police, paramedics, firefighters, SES volunteers, lifesavers and corrections and customs officers will be among the 3000 participants vying for the Inter-Services Trophy at the Victoria Police and Emergency Services Games. Events will be held around Victoria, from April 8 to 17, including at Bendigo, Phillip Island, Werribee, Traralgon, Ballarat and Geelong. “I started shooting when I was very young chasing around rabbits and foxes and then took it up as a sport,” Mr Hynam said.

Mr Hynam is one of nearly 50 staff who will represent Port Phillip Prison at the games this year. “I’ve been in the games since 2008,” he says. “I started as the lone competitor from Port Phillip Prison. Gradually over the years more and more people have seen what we’re doing and have decided to come on board to compete at the games.” Training hasn’t been easy with two knee injuries and aching shoulders he attributes to working more than 25 years in corrections. “I’ve been working at Port Phillip Prison for 17 years and before that I worked at Pentridge Prison for nine years … that’s as long as a murder sentence,” he joked. Esther Lauaki

Retraction and apology Raymond, Daniel and Paul Chapman commenced legal proceedings in the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) against the Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES), seeking a review of a suspension imposed by VICSES management following an alleged preliminary investigation into work health and safety practices and potential disciplinary matters at the Bacchus Marsh VICSES Unit. VICSES sought judgment on jurisdictional grounds stating that since it made no decision which was reviewable by VCAT, VCAT did not have the jurisdiction to hear the matter. The proceeding was dismissed on 8 September 2015 on the basis that no reviewable decision had been made. On 29 September 2015, the Melton Moorabool Star Weekly published an article in print and online concerning the VCAT proceeding. The article contained a statement that the alleged preliminary investigation held at the Bacchus Marsh Unit was in relation to the behaviour of the Chapmans and that the Chapmans did not dispute the findings of the alleged investigation. Those statements were incorrect and the Melton Moorabool Star Weekly hereby retracts them. The Melton Moorabool Star Weekly acknowledges that the Chapmans did dispute the findings and that they continue to do so. The Melton Moorabool Star Weekly unreservedly apologises to the Chapmans for any hurt, embarrassment or damage which the statements may have caused to their personal and/or professional reputation.

MPs unite in Ravenhall tip fight By Sumeyya Ilanbey Four local Labor, Liberal and Greens MPs have vowed to “stand united” in their fight against a planned expansion of the Ravenhall landfill. At a Stop The Tip meeting held in Caroline Springs last Wednesday, the politicians promised the crowd of about 200 that they would support them in their opposition to Cleanaway’s plans to expand the size of the landfill and its permit’s duration. The politicians attending were Kororoit MP Marlene Kairouz and Western Metropolitan MLCs Colleen Hartland, Bernie Finn and

Cesar Melhem. Ms Kairouz said Planning Minister Richard Wynne’s teams were going through Cleanaway’s lengthy planning application, submitted to Melton council last month, with a fine-tooth comb. She said Mr Wynne was expected to “call in” the application in the next few weeks. Once an application is called in by the minister and a decision made, the applicants have no avenue of appeal. “The application is full of technical garbage, pardon the pun,” Ms Kairouz said. “There are real impacts to the community and I know the Premier and minister will take all of those into

consideration. The fight isn’t over … I will stand with you in this fight [against the expansion],” Ms Kairouz said. Mr Finn implored people at the meeting to “get on the front foot” and let companies and governments know they had had enough of dealing with the stench of landfill so close to their homes. Mr Finn said he was “absolutely staggered” about the plan to expand the size of the landfill. “It affects way of life, health and children … every day is intolerable. To suggest making it bigger is outrageous,” he said. Mr Melhem encouraged residents to make

submissions to the state government when the minister calls in the application. “You cannot have a tip and people next door – the two just don’t mix,” Mr Melhem said. “The only reason we won this last time was because everyone worked together, got active and petitioned. “Keep up the good work, keep up the fight. I’m with you all the way.” Ms Hartland said the meeting wasn’t about “political scoring” but about local MPs getting together to fight for their community. “The west isn’t the rest of Victoria’s dumping ground – this is not acceptable,” she said.

Hunt for bunny bonanza Bacchus Marsh youngsters will be hunting high and low for chocolate this Friday at EasterFest. The free community festival, run by a small group of mums, will run from 9am at Maddingley Park and is aimed at raising funds for the Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital. Organiser Amy Hasse says the event has become a popular tradition. “It runs every Good Friday, bringing together people from Bacchus Marsh and surrounding towns for a day of fun and family time,” she says. “And for those who love markets, we’ll have up to 60 stalls.” Easter egg hunts, for children aged one to 13, will be the main feature of the festivities along with rides and other entertainment. “The team at Bacchus Marsh EasterFest likes to include local community groups and sports

clubs to showcase what the area has to offer,” Ms Hasse says. “We also want the community to help us raise some much-needed funds for our local hospital.” Bacchus Marsh EasterFest is a free-entry festival but with fees for hunts and rides/ amusements. Tickets cost $15 per child per hunt ($20 on the day). Book online at www.ticketebo.com. au/bmef Esther Lauaki

By Sumeyya Ilanbey Melton police want VicRoads to install wire barriers along Truganina’s Hopkins Road and reduce the speed limit to 80 km/h following a recent double fatality. Sergeant Chris Stuhldreier, of the Melton highway patrol, said that while VicRoads had plans to duplicate the road, he hoped barriers and a lower speed limit would help make it safer in the meantime. Melton South couple Jesus, 43, and Alma Remo, 39, were killed when their Mazda 4WD and a truck collided head-on along Hopkins Road on March 10, leaving three teenage children orphaned. “With the volume of traffic, it’s certainly a main arterial that feeds the Western Freeway and Wyndham,” Sergeant Stuhldreier said. “I’ve no doubt it’s on the horizon [for VicRoads], but from a policing perspective we’d love to see upgrades along that road. “Hopkins Road is certainly up there as a blackspot.” He said that as part of Operation Impacted, which runs until the end of May, police were targeting roads known for road trauma, including Hopkins Road. Melton and Wyndham councils, police and VicRoads were also working closely together to improve safety along the road, he said. Melton council engineering services acting manager Voltaire David said the council would seek a briefing and report of the accident from VicRoads and work with it to implement any recommendations.

(Shawn Smits)

Cop pleads for speed limit cut “It’s a tragedy that two lives were lost on Hopkins Road,” Mr David said. He said the council was not responsible for upgrading the stretch of road but had taken part in VicRoads’ Hopkins Road Corridor study, which plans for an ultimate duplication of the road.

Senior Sergeant Damien Madden, of the Westgate highway patrol and a member of Roadsafe Westgate, would not be drawn on whether he thought the road was dangerous but conceded it was busy and needed to be duplicated. “Melton and Wyndham are both experiencing population growth,” Senior Sergeant Madden said. “The natural flow-on of that is increased traffic.” VicRoads north-west metro acting regional director Bryan Sherritt said a number of improvement works along Derrimut and Hopkins roads had been carried out. “We are constantly reviewing the safety of Derrimut Road and Hopkins Road and will continue to work with Victoria Police, Wyndham and Melton council to make further improvements as required,” he said. Wyndham council was contacted for comment.

Medics alerted to danger zones By Esther Lauaki Paramedics have flagged more than 20 addresses at Melton and Bacchus Marsh they have deemed ‘unsafe’. Ambulance Victoria last week revealed paramedics attending emergencies in the area over the past year had been confronted with violence at 13 addresses, and safety was a concern at 10 other locations. A register of ‘locations of interest’ listed nearly 1200 trouble spots across Victoria. Mornington Peninsula fared worst with 105 addresses flagged. The addresses are highlighted to alert paramedics to locations where they may need a police escort or where safety precautions need to be taken. Ambulance Victoria records show that paramedics were sent into 816 aggressive situations in the year to October 2015, with 39 records stating “police may be required”. A further 355 records related to safety concerns, with 47 stating police may be required. Ambulance Victoria acting general manager Mick Stephenson said the safety of paramedics was paramount. “We don’t tolerate any violence or aggression towards our staff,” he said. “No paramedic is expected to enter a scene where violence is likely or suspected. “Any risk is managed as it is identified collaboratively by ESTA [estimated time of arrival] call-takers and dispatchers, and supported by experienced paramedics in

the communication centre who can provide phone and radio support to paramedics in the field and arrange for police attendance and rendezvous points when required. “We also work with Victoria Police to increase information sharing, to better identify danger spots, including where individuals may be violent, have a mental health issue, use drugs or own a firearm.”

He said Ambulance Victoria was continually reviewing systems to provide the safest possible work environment for paramedics. “Paramedics can flag addresses in our special patient information system to allow for specific instructions to be given to triple-0 call-takers and dispatchers, managers and paramedics in our communications centre and any future crews called to these addresses,” Mr Stephenson said. “Instructions may relate to the locations of automated external defibrillators, known frequent callers, information for paramedics to access property, and relevant patient medical information. “We work to identify special patient information by assessing call and location information for relevant facts at all times during call-taking and dispatch.”

Kids in the kennel Melton South Primary School pupils were star-struck when some of their favourite AFL players came to the school and kicked a footy round the oval with them. Western Bulldogs’ players Lukas Webb, Kody Stevens and Easton Wood hosted a footy clinic for grades 3 and 4 pupils … and snuck in some autographs while they were there. Midfielder Lukas Webb said he was really excited to come down and give the youngsters an insight into the world of footy. “I loved when players came down to my school when I was younger,” Webb said.

“So it’s really good to give back – I found it really inspiring to get inside knowledge about the AFL and what football is like.” Physical education teacher Stefani Modesti said the pupils had just started learning about football in their school curriculum, and the clinic would be an opportunity many would cherish. “They all seem really excited,” Ms Modesti said. “And I know quite a few of them do barrack for the Bulldogs.” Sumeyya Ilanbey

What’s your connection to Moorabool? I’ve been here for about 16 years. I’m from Geelong initially, but I married a local boy and that’s why I came to Bacchus Marsh. My husband’s family are a couple of generations of Bacchus Marshians. We married here and we’ve got a couple of kids at the local school. What’s your favourite part about living in Bacchus Marsh? It has a lot to offer – lots of education and job opportunities. My husband calls it the golden triangle – we’re close to Geelong, Ballarat and Melbourne. We also like that there isn’t a lot of hustle and bustle.

The traffic. The school runs are a nightmare – we live in Darley and our kids go to St Bernards [Primary School in Bacchus Marsh], so the school run can often take 20 minutes for what is a six-kilometre trip. We do ride our bikes a lot, particularly during spring and summer, just to try and beat the traffic. You’ve started Bacchus Marsh Women’s Trail Running group – tell us about this?

starweekly.com.au

I’ve been a trail runner for a few years … but I didn’t want to go for the runs on my own … I didn’t feel safe or that it was sensible. So I put out the call for some women to join a group. I was only expecting six or seven people to jump on board, but a huge number [more than 70] have heeded that [Facebook] call.

What would you change about the area?

What’s the best thing about trail running?

Where’s your favourite track?

It’s a different running activity – your senses are more in tune because you have to look where you’re going, making sure you don’t trip. I really like the peace and serenity of the bush; I like it’s mindfulness. It’s so relaxing that I don’t think about the list of the chores I have, I don’t think about the shopping list, I don’t think about school lunches. I just get out there, enjoy the peace and quiet, and see if I can find some wildlife.

Probably the Lerderderg Gorge/Grahams Dam track. It’s just a nice, easy scenic track. It’s got some rocks, some stepping stones through the water, and the track changes a little – it can be hilly and then smooth. And where’s your favourite me-time place? Local cafes – they do really great coffee and [some] do really great healthy foods.

Images key to top health outcomes L

ast November, Lake Imaging installed the latest in CT technology, a GE 128-slice scanner. Since then, says regional manager Eddy Cattapan, his team has noticed improvements beyond expectations in the areas of reduced radiation dose, faster scan times and improved image quality. He was astounded by one case. “A patient who regularly attends the clinic for monitoring of his condition saw a reduction in radiation dose of 25 per cent when comparing his last month’s scan to that of a year ago,” Eddy says.

“For patients such as this who have yearly scans, this equates to quite a reduction in long-term radiation dose. “And the faster scanner has reduced scan times, and reduced waiting times for appointments.” Lake Imaging Melton can now offer all patients same or next-day appointments, depending on the preparation required for each examination. For most examinations not requiring any preparation, access is significantly improved, with every attempt made to accommodate patients on the same day. “As with your computer or television at home, improvements in CT technology that come with new scanners lead to

improvements in the image quality,” Eddy says. “This, in turn, leads to improved accuracy for doctors detecting abnormalities, which appear much clearer than on older systems.” All CT scans are bulk billed for patients who have a valid referral from their doctor. Passion for prestige cars, top service I

t was a cool January day in Canberra when Robert Gajic’s 1975 Holden Torana – entrant 472 – arrived at this year’s Summernats. By the end of the hugely popular, four-day rev-head festival, the temperature had rocketed to hot. Hot, too, were Vincent Bartolo’s team from Auto Passion. The guys were awarded second place in the top sedan category for their panel and paint work on the Torana.

I love the whole restoration thing … it’s all really enjoyable The 1800-strong Summernats field included the toughest and most elite street machines in Australia. “We’re still reeling,” Vince says. “We were just hoping to get in the top 60 so we’re stoked, to say the least. “I already knew our team was good and the win just bears that out.” Vince spent his early years (following his apprenticeship) in the motor repair industry, developing his skills and travelling around Melbourne working at various smash shops. He learnt the ropes quickly. By the time he was 20, he was working on prestige cars such as Rolls Royce, Bentley, Aston Martin, Ferrari and Mercedes Benz. It taught him the joys of working on fine machines and sowed the seeds for what would soon become a passion.

Vince says restoring classic and prestige cars is excitement personified. “I love the whole restoration thing,” he says. “Roof chops, custom and candy painting, building chassis, customising wheel tubs, doing steel and fibreglass work, or building a hot rod – it’s all really enjoyable.

“And I have a great crew around me in the workshop, all highly trained in their own fields. And we use all the latest technology.” Auto Passion works with all insurance companies, which means smash repairs are carried out quickly and customers are back on the road as fast as possible.

Importantly, all parts are new and, where applicable, excess fees may be reduced. Auto Passion Bacchus Marsh, 12 Station Street, Bacchus Marsh. Open 8am-5pm weekdays, 9am-noon Saturdays. Inquiries: 5367 0117, vince@autopassion. com.au or www.autopassion.com.au

‘Do the right thing’ plea to drivers A

Victorian road safety expert has issued a heartfelt Easter plea to all the state’s drivers ... slow down and stay alive. RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council chairman Jim Giddings said it had been demonstrated time and again that speed was a major factor in most road crashes. “So stay within the speed limit and drive to suit the conditions,” he said. “Speeding affects both the risk of a crash happening and the severity of injuries sustained when a crash does happen.” Mr Giddings made his appeal as Victoria Police prepared to launch Operation Nexus,

Road trauma isn’t just about the people who die a five-day statewide blitz that will form part of the Easter holiday safety campaign. Police hope it will increase driver awareness and journey planning and keep our roads safer during what is often a high-risk time. This five-day operation will run from Thursday, March 24 to Monday, March 28. Road policing advisor Senior Sergeant Ross Burbidge said Operation Nexus would be conducted throughout the state with as many police resources as possible. be patient and ensure they take at least a 15-minute break at least every two hours and not to drive if tired. “Road trauma isn’t just about the people who die – it’s about the enormous impact on the community, from the family members and emergency services workers who have to deal with these tragedies on

a daily basis to the police who have to deliver the devastating news to loved ones. “All the community has a responsibility and a role to play in reducing road trauma.” Senior Sergeant Burbidge asked the community to report speeding drivers to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Djerriwarrh Health transforms services C

hange has swept through Djerriwarrh Health Services at Bacchus Marsh. Newly appointed chief executive Andrew Freeman says there has been a major transformation. “The list of ‘new’ is a long one,” he says. “We have new leadership, with Health Minister-appointed Dr John Ballard taking the role of administrator, new staff, new clinical governance, new equipment, new capital investment, and new partnerships with Western Health and Royal Women’s Hospital.

“This reflects rapid change in the growth corridor we service – Melton, Bacchus Marsh and Caroline Springs.” A new staff line-up has Dr Nisha Khot as the director of obstetrics, and Dr Latika Cilly as the staff specialist in obstetrics and gynaecology. Impressive new capital investments include the purchase and installation of eight Philips Avalon foetal monitoring machines, and the construction of a $2.9 million Central Sterile Supply Unit (CSSU) at Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital, along with expanded maternity services. “We’re also taking a lead role in the development of a $21 million health centre in the Melton Health Precinct,” says Mr Freeman.

(Supplied)

… an expression of community confidence in Djerriwarrh

“It’s funded by the Victorian state government and, once completed to an early-2018 schedule, will have seven different services under the one roof.” Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital, Melton Health, and community health centres in both towns, as well as Caroline Springs, come under the umbrella of Djerriwarrh Health Services. The hospital is a 42-bed acute hospital

with 11 maternity beds, and it performs a range of theatre procedures and provides outpatient and community health care. It has welcomed 153 newborns in the past three months, including 54 in February alone. Mr Freeman says this, along with the 160 new antenatal bookings in January and February, is significant. “We see this as an expression of community confidence in Djerriwarrh.

“But we’re still looking for feedback and, to this extent, we will soon be inviting nominations from community members to help us continue to build for the future and optimise change at the service.” Djerriwarrh Health Services, 29-35 Grant Street, Bacchus Marsh. Inquiries: 5367 2000

Docs specialise in after-hours care I

nosha Bopearachchi, Akilan Mansutha, Alexander Demar and Chinthaka Wijekulasooriya are all doctors at Grant Street Medical Centre. These melodic names are followed in each case by serious medical letters (MBBS, FRACGP, etc) – something every patient can draw confidence from, as they can from the level of experience in this group.

hours

not everyone can see a doctor in business

It’s also a savvy combination of medicos, who realised before opening the centre two years ago that their community had a shortage of clinics that remain open beyond normal hours. Dr Demar says: “Really, it was a matter of our community showing a need for extended access matching a desire in each of us to provide a first-class service. “We know not everyone can get away from work to see a doctor in business hours, just as we understand people’s lives are busy and need flexibility. “Parents with young children find our later hours – including weekends and public holidays – are invaluable. We know how often a young child’s illness seems to worsen later in the evening and our after-hour times can mean the difference in getting prompt care or sitting in an often-crowded hospital department with a much longer wait.”

Dr Chinthaka Wijekulasooriya, Dr Inosha Bopearachchi and Dr Alexander Demar. (Joe Mastroianni)

Asthma management, treatment of fractures, immunisations and health checks are children-specific services that also apply to adults. Women’s health encompasses pregnancy tests, obstetrics, antenatal care and pap smears; and men’s health is another clinic focus. Influenza and travel vaccines (yellow

fever-accredited), ECGs, diabetes management, cryotherapy (lesion treatment), minor surgery and mental health plans are also carried out. “We aim always to be a very welcoming clinic,” Dr Wijekulasooriya says. “I believe we’ve succeeded in this. We’re also hoping that, as we grow, we can offer other medical services.”

A hearing audiologist visits the clinic one week and a hearing test specialist the next, while a dietitian attends fortnightly. Grant Street Medical Centre, 54 Grant Street, Bacchus Marsh. Opens 8am-10pm Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm weekends and public holidays. Inquiries: 4367 7555

Look, look, it’s a book-book shop I

ndustry pundits insist the e-book hasn’t killed off the real book and is unlikely to do so any time soon. In fact, two out of three reading purchases are still hard copy books. This comes as no surprise to Jan Lewis, owner of Collins Booksellers in Bacchus Marsh.

variety, but definitely has a weakness for cooking books. “Mother’s Day is coming up soon and what better idea than giving a book which has the implied, associated gift of time off to read it,” Jan says. “We are happy to giftwrap, personalise and even post if that suits you.” Postage is $6.95 for purchases less than $50 and free thereafter.

Those who prefer to shop at home can call, email or Facebook message the team to have a catalogue posted, and for online shoppers, the Collins Booksellers website is serviced by the stores, so customers know they are still supporting local businesses. The store also caters to the needs of schools and carries a range of suitable books for teachers to browse, and holds in-store educational events.

“At the end of the day, the best antidote to facing a computer all day, is to curl up with a real book and relax,” Jan says. Collins Booksellers, Shop 1, 137A Main Street, Bacchus Marsh. “People who are lovers of physical books enjoy the experience of ink on real pages that can be dog-eared with use or kept pristine, according to personal habits. What do your books tell us about you?” Jan says. Local resident Jan, who believed that the area needed a good bookshop, has renewed her franchise with the ABC to continue providing licenced toys, DVDs, CDs and other ABC products. “I was new to retail and new to running my own business when I started six years ago, but I wanted to give it a go,” she says. “Having grown up locally, I really value good service and the importance of having a local community.” The team includes Natalie, a former manager at Angus & Robinson in Melton, who loves fantasy, horror and a good serve of young adult books. And she loves to see familiar faces from Melton visiting the shop. Stephanie, the younger staff member, loves young adult books, junior fiction and picture books. Godings and Kubota - a perfect team A

plumber, digging a trench on a construction site, finds his Godings-purchased Kubota excavator has broken down. He needs a part replaced in a hurry because the breakdown has brought the whole site to a screeching halt. What can he do to get things moving again – and fast? The answer, says Goding’s owner Adrian Williams, is their fully equipped service fleet. “That plumber is a wise man. He not only bought his excavator from us, but he also owns a Kubota, the best machinery around,” he says.

That plumber is a wise man … Kubota, the best machinery brand around “We can have a fully trained mechanic to the site in no time, solve the issue and have everyone on site back to work.” Godings crew of mechanics gets ongoing training and they’re right on top of things. They also have access to the full set of diagnostic tools and a complete range of spare parts, along with providing top-notch machinery servicing. The Kubota label appears on most of the product range – compact track loaders, mowers, generators and excavator buckets and attachments, including auger drive units. Godings is the only authorised Kubota dealer to meet machinery needs in the construction industry located in

Melbourne’s west. Adrian says he and the team are very customer-focused, before and after a sale. He also values hearing good stories from his customers. “It could be a concreter who’s just bought his first piece of Kubota machinery, perhaps a compact track loader. When we

see him down the track he tells us how rapt he is with the machine and how it’s made work on sites just that bit easier. Or a civil contractor whose work on housing estates has been a dream run, with his Kubota machinery proving incredibly reliable and his team pleased with the efficiency.” Adrian intends Godings to be the

construction industry’s destination of choice … and all the right elements are in place to make sure Godings is exactly that place. Godings, 2129 Western Highway, Rockbank. Opens 8am-5pm Monday-Friday and 8am-noon Saturday. Inquiries: 9747 1359 or rockbank@godings.com.au

MELTON WEST 81 Arnolds Creek Boulevard, 3337 YPA: 9746 8899

Price: $429,000 – $449,000

Everything about this modern place stamps it as one for a bigger family – from the layout zoning and space allocation through to the flexibility of bedroom numbers. All is as neat as a pin and the one thing left to do – the smallish backyard – is very manageable and offers potential for rewarding creativity. Grey, charcoal and white is the consistent colour palette; tiles and carpet are in all the right places; and the simplicity of roller blinds (charcoal) dress all windows.

A long entry hall has a study on the left, a room that could be adopted as bedroom six. The main bedroom across the way has a walk-in wardrobe and an en suite with wall-hung storage cubes flanking the vanity. The other four bedrooms (with wardrobes) cluster around the gleaming main bathroom and separate toilet. These rooms seem to be in an almost separate wing, an example of the family-friendly zoning. An instance of clever space allocation is found in the carpeted lounge room at

the end of the entry hall. Having a door controls noise transfer and allows it to be a theatre room, adult retreat space or even a playroom. In the large, light-filled living hub, the appealing kitchen has a big walk-in pantry, an island bench topped with black stone, grey cabinetry, soft-green glass splashback and Technika Bellissimo dishwasher and 900mm cooker. The laundry, off the kitchen area, is plenty big enough to cater for heavy-duty

washing days. A large, covered alfresco area has decking underfoot, which extends down the side to serve as either a walkway to the backyard or a spot to put seating out in the sunshine. Densely planted yuccas in river stones add greenery to this area. The property has gas ducted heating, evaporative cooling, and a remote-controlled double garage. FOOD REVIEW

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir takes a walk on the wild side of the west WEST OF KIN Address: 17 Lacy Street, Braybrook Phone: 9317 7553 Baramundi (market price) has been grilled in its banana leaf with house-made XO, and is served with rice. It has that earthy baramundi taste, but there is no doubting the wonders of the luxurious, perfectly cooked and generous quantity of white flesh. Dessert time! There’s three available ($12), so we order one of each. Our dessert trio is more European than Asian, but Asian flavours are used. The WoK sundae has a familiar flavour that has us scratching our heads. We find out that it’s dried mandarin! The chocolate delice – golden leaf, hazelnut crumble – is a solid slab of incredibly intensely flavoured and bitter African chocolate. The stand-alone panna cotta is firmer than most, though still gorgeously wobbly, and spiced with cardamom. All three are wonderful. (Consider The Sauce dined as guests of the management and did not pay for our meals. We chose from the regular menu with no restrictions. West of Kin management had no input, oversight or access to this story before it went to print.) Kenny Weir is the founder of Consider the Sauce, the definitive guide to eating in Melbourne’s western suburbs – www.considerthesauce.net

YUNAN-STYLE LAMB RIBS SICHUAN-STYLE BEEF TARTARE PRAWN TOAST

BARAMUNDI GRILLED IN BANANA LEAF WITH HOUSE-MADE XO SAUCE

1162371-PB45-14

The most miraculous thing about West of Kin is its very existence, shiny and cool and just off Ballarat Road in a neighbourhood hallmarked by auto wreckers, panelbeaters, furniture factories and sundry light industries. Fighting fit and ready to eat, the CTS team of three is very excited to be at this new Asian fusion joint. Tonight, a scant handful of days into the restaurant’s life, we are the guests of proprietors Andy and Tram. ‘Taste’ courses number nine, and are priced between $8 and $11, or sold in trios for $22. Yunan-style lamb ribs with sesame seeds, sweet and sour soy lacquer are lovely, though fatty – as is to be expected. Sichuan-style beef tartare with fried shallot, garlic and quail yolk has little by way of the feistiness we normally associate with this Chinese province, although it is a subtle and delicate delight served on a prawn cracker. Prawn toast? Seen one, seen them all – so, of course, we order the West of Kin version. This prawn toast is a sensation, the white-bread base sitting beneath a thick slab of roughly chopped prawn meat, topped with black and white sesame seeds and festooned with a heap of herbs. The seasoning is not listed, but the prawn mix, the whole dish, is entirely delicious. The WoK menu has only four main dishes. The ma po tofu, pork and black bean ($22) is a hummingly super dish that had us giggling with the excellence of it.

47 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 22, 2016

SPORT Saints tumble to defeat By Liam Twomey

Breds sweat on star import Melton is hoping star import Ivan Harris will be able to line up for the club’s round two Big V division 1 basketball clash next week. American-born Harris has been delayed by a visa issue. The 31-year old, one of the best-credentialled players in division 1, was a member of Melton’s premiershipwinning side last year and has since signed a two-year deal with the Thoroughbreds. After a four-year stint representing US college Ohio State, Harris played in the NBA development league with Cleveland, Atlanta, Dallas and Oklahoma. Melton coach Grant Spencer is hoping he will be available for the round two game against Geelong. To help cover for the loss, the Thoroughbreds have signed Tim Coenraad to a short-term contract. Coenraad played 223 matches for the Illawarra Hawks in the NBL. “I used to coach him at Ballarat,” Spencer said. “A short-term contract is something that’s appealing to him.” Coenraad will be the second NBL player on the Thoroughbreds’ list, with the club having signed Chris Patton earlier in the year. Patton was a back-up centre for Melbourne United.

There was no fairytale ending for St Anthonys in the Gisborne District Cricket Association B-grade grand final on Saturday. The Saints came up 102 runs short against Rupertswood, putting an end to their quest for premiership glory. For Rupertswood, the win comes with a double dose of celebration, the club having also earned promotion to the GDCA’s A-grade competition next season. The rewards are thoroughly deserved as Rupertswood dominated all aspects of the grand final. After winning the toss, it ground out 211, batting for the first day and a half. In pursuit, St Anthonys had limped to 5-80 at the end of day two. Resuming on Saturday, it didn’t take long for the remaining wickets to fall, the Saints being knocked over for 109. Club president Lucas Alaimo was the standout with the bat, making 57. The only other to reach double figures was first drop Ryan Dobbie with 27. For Rupertswood, Aaron Forward was the leading wicket-taker with three scalps, while Karl Sutherland and Brandon Webber claimed two each. While they missed out on the ultimate glory, it was still a solid season for the Saints, who improved on a semi-final loss last season.

Burras gutted as tied decision costs them a flag

Diggers Rest Bulla players react to their grand final defeat. (Luke Hemer)

Diggers Rest Bulla players can hold their heads high despite not getting the result they were after in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup grand final. Needing a win against Gisborne to claim the club’s first McIntyre Cup premiership, the Burras were left shattered when the teams finished tied at 215. Because the Dragons finished second on the ladder to the Burras’ fourth, the premiership went to Gisborne. Burras coach Kevin Barker said the side was gutted. “At the end of the day, we didn’t actually lose the grand final, it’s as simple as that,” he said. “We pushed a really good side to the end. “If a couple of things had gone our way it could have been a different result, not taking

anything away from Gisborne. It’s a numb feeling knowing we didn’t lose the game.” Starting the third day of the match at Gardiner Reserve needing to take five wickets for victory, the Burras looked in control when they dismissed Simon Harman, Clinton Young and Tahir Afridi in quick succession. At that stage the Dragons needed 47 runs with two wickets in hand. “Our bowlers had done the job all year and we expected them to do it again this time,” Barker said. “We created a chance in the second last over, but didn’t take it. “To their credit they fought hard and put on more than 40 for the last two wickets. “We knew they’d fight hard as they are a strong side and a successful club. Credit to them, they fought.”

Darren Quarrell who was on a hat-trick after taking the wickets of Harman and Young, finished with five, while Rhys Berry and Lindon Dowsett took two wickets each. It capped off a good year with the ball for both Berry and Quarrell, who were named in the GDCA team of the year last week. Barker was named player of the grand final after making 118 on day one, which set up the Burras’ total. He said the club still had a lot to be proud of, in their first season back in the top grade. “It’s important for everyone to hold their heads high,” he said. “No one gave us a shot at the start of the year and to get as far as we did it is an amazing effort. At the end of the day, they didn’t actually lose.” Tara Murray

Dual occupancy for Jet skippers The Western Jets have appointed Oscar Junker and Wilson Berry as joint captains for the upcoming TAC Cup season after being named in the club’s leadership group last month. Berry and Junker impressed the Jets’ coaches, staff and players throughout the club’s practice match phase and were given the official captaincy nod last week. Junker is a long-time member of the Jets, having gone through the club’s development programs at under-15 and under-16 levels. He was a bottom age player at the Jets last year and was named the club’s best first-year player. Western Jets region manager Shane Sexton said one of Junker’s best assets was his versatility. “Last year, we started him on a half-back flank to utilise his kicking and he did a really good job,” Sexton said. “He would have played on the wing at times … later in the year, because he is so good overhead, we played him at centre half-forward. “In the last game of the year, when we knocked off the Cannons, Oscar was at centre half-forward and he kicked a couple of telling goals.” Last year was Berry’s first at the Jets. He wasted no time making himself at home, finishing third in the best and fairest rankings as well as being named the club’s most consistent player. “As a bottom age player, Wilson started off in the back pocket,” Sexton said.

“He was really solid for us there … as the season progressed, we got him up the ground a bit and he really came into his own. “He has terrific run and carry, he is a good ball winner and he was very influential towards the latter part of last year.” Junker and Berry are two Jets who are expected to be closely watched by AFL recruiters this season. They have been named in the under-18 Vic Metro squad for the upcoming national championships. They will be joined by top-age teammates Harry Bult, Judah Dundon, Brock McGregor, Jordan Robinson and Daniel Venables. Also named in the squad is bottom age player Lachlan Fogarty. The teenager is coming off a brilliant under-16 national championships at which he was named Vic Metro’s best player. Fogarty is also a member of the AFL AIS Academy program and will be heading off on a tour of New Zealand later this year. “To have all those guys selected in the Vic Metro squad, that is really good … we are really pleased about that,” Sexton said. “Hopefully, with some good early season form, we might sneak another one or two in.” The final under-18 Vic Metro squad will be named in April. The Jets will kick off their 2016 TAC Cup campaign against the Oakleigh Chargers this week.

Oscar Junker has been named a co-captain at the Western Jets. (Damian Visentini)

VPT is a luxury vehicle, chauffeur-driven service for special occasions when people need to make a statement or grand entrance. Airport and corporate transfers can also be carried out in style. “Having a head-turning car arrive at pick-up and destination adds a sparkle to events, and corporate clients value the ease, professionalism and reliability of a luxury transfer, and appreciate the cachet it adds.” The service operates around the clock, every day of the year, and can arrange baby seats, flowers, wines and even wedding ribbons.

MOTOR No kinks in the super Cooper The Mini Cooper was the original pocket-racer and, while its architect John Cooper is no longer with us, son Mike is still involved in the road-going Minis that bear his father’s initials, JCW – John Cooper Works. Coopers have been the high-performance versions of the Mini range for many years and hold a special place in the minds of all Mini enthusiasts, not just those into fast cars. I recently spent a lot of time chatting, eating and, of course, driving the just-released third generation JCW Mini at the Phillip Island racetrack as well as on interesting country roads on our way back to Melbourne. The latest JCW Mini uses a 2.0-litre turbo-charged engine that produces 170 kW of power and 320 Nm of torque, the biggestever numbers. Best of all, top torque is spread all the way across the rev range, from 1250 to 4800, with a hefty punch still on offer until you approach the sixes. Peak power is reached at 5200 rpm and continues until 6000 rpm, so there’s fun under your foot all the time. At the island, the turbo-charged engine just kept on pulling, and 230km/h was on the dial before we had to brake for the scary high-speed kink that signals the end of the long downhill straight. Huge Brembo brakes haul off speed very promptly and, even at Phillip Island with its ultra-fast straights and hard stops, never had us anywhere near brake fade. Electronic stability control and a clever

on some of our review cars, Continental on others) created quite a bit of road noise on the coarse-chip surfaces traversed on the open road. All our test cars had six-speed automatic

transmissions, as six-speed manuals. Much as we love driving manuals in high-performance machines, we have to admit the automatic JCWs are quicker and more economical than manuals. Paddle shifters do give you full control over gear changes – but we can’t wait to get our hands on a manual. Minis are all about style, and the JCW takes that route in its reshaping when compared with the standard Cooper S. Probably the most instantly noticeable change is the addition of a red bar across the centre of the grille. Larger cooling slots in the lower front, including one for an auxiliary radiator, make an engineering statement but mean there’s no space for fog lights. Reshaped door sills are part of the aerodynamic package, and a large rear wing at roof level adds downforce. Grey-coloured spats around the wheel arches further increase the positive statement made by the Mini. Sports seats are exactly as we like them: good side grip, but not so deep as to make entry and exit a pain. BMW’s topline Professional Navigation system is installed, and infotainment is provided by a tuner that has DAB+ added to the usual station options. Mini by JCW has a slightly old-fashioned head-up display, which relies on a small screen sitting in the top of the dash. There’s nothing old-fashioned about the range of information it provides, though.
