Brave Noah wins hearts By Esther Lauaki Five-year-old Noah Barlow has never eaten in his life. The Balliang youngster is fed formula through a tube directly into his stomach because no food is safe for him. He was born with multiple disorders, some so rare they had no name, but last year doctors narrowed his diagnosis down to mitochondrial disease, a chronic condition with no treatment and no cure. Thanks to a crowdfunding campaign, Noah’s journey to improve the quality of his life started on Monday after he and his mum, Kat, arrived in Brisbane to begin a brand new neuro-therapy. The therapy costs $6000 per four-week block and will address some of the debilitating symptoms that Noah has, such as his developmental delays, autism, PTSD, anxiety, and vision and motor control.

A Gofundme campaign, launched last month, raised almost $40,000 in two weeks, which will cover therapy costs, flights, accommodation and car hire for two months. Bacchus Marsh residents donated goods, crafts and services for a silent auction, which was widely publicised on Facebook. “The words ‘thank-you’ are too tiny to express our never-ending gratitude for all the support we received,” Mrs Barlow said. “We never even dared to dream the outpouring of love would be so huge and we are utterly overwhelmed by the hearts of people all over the world who contributed. “We put ourselves in the most vulnerable of all positions in asking for help, and our community just opened its arms to our son.” Noah suffered five devastating stroke-like episodes early on in life, which left him unable to walk, talk, breathe without aid, or see. Each episode caused more brain damage. But despite all the challenges, Mrs Barlow describes Noah as a Star Wars-mad, volcano-loving larrikin with a wicked laugh. “He stops to dance in shopping centres when the music takes him – and he takes my breath away,” she says. “He’s an old soul with a big heart, and he’s the bravest, most determined person I know … he keeps going no matter how hard things are for him. “He’s so much more than all the things wrong with him and all the things he can’t do.” Details: www.gofundme.com/noahbarlow

Safety hubs to put victims first By Sumeyya Ilanbey Melton’s young people fleeing domestic violence face the obstacle that the closest emergency accommodation is about 30 kilometres away. A Hope Street Youth and Family Services survey from April last year found 94 per cent of its female clients and 86 per cent of its male clients cited violence as the reason they left their family home. Now agencies hope to get local projects off the ground after the state government signalled it would commit funds to emergency
accommodation following last week’s handing down of the comprehensive report of the Royal Commission into Family Violence. The report highlights the “major limitations” of youth refuges and the lack of them in growth corridors. Hope Street plans a $1.5 million emergency accommodation centre but still needs funding. A spokesman for Housing Minister Martin Foley said this was being “considered”. Hope Street service development manager Mandy Baxter said she welcomed the findings of the commission and its emphasis on young
people and their needs. Ms Baxter said that while the safety of victims of domestic violence should be paramount, there needed to be a holistic service, including counselling, provided to young people “so they can reconcile that trauma and move forward”. “There’s a real capture of young people in this report,” Ms Baxter said. “We’re so pleased it’s recognised that in growth corridors, like Melton, if we don’t put support services in place, young people disconnect from their space, place and communities.”
The commission wants the state government to recognise children and young people affected by domestic violence “as victims in their own right”. Among its 227 recommendations, the commission noted the need for support and safety hubs for both victims and perpetrators in each of the 17 Department of Health and Human Services areas, including Brimbank and Melton. It said these should be provided by 2017. Premier Daniel Andrews has vowed to “overhaul the broken family violence system from the bottom up”.

Melton families are being asked to help with a special Anzac Day memorial this month. As part of April 25 commemorations, 500 crosses will be laid on Melton Civic Centre’s lawn. Partners of Veterans Association Melton sub-branch’s co-founder Carole Doyle said the initiative, now in its second year, is a way for people to thank former and current service people. A Werribee man faces a string of charges after being caught speeding more than 120 km/h over the limit at Rockbank. Police clocked the P-plater travelling at 200 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on Neale Road about 12.30pm last Wednesday. Acting Sergeant David England, of Melton Highway Patrol, said officers pulled the man over near Hopkins Road and impounded his 2015 Volkswagen Golf, which will cost him $983 to clear. The 21-year-old allegedly told police he took the sports car, bought about a month ago, for a test drive – he wanted to see how fast it could go. He did not test positive for drugs or alcohol, police say. “Thankfully, nobody was injured,” Acting Sergeant England said. “But it’s absolutely atrocious … foolish behaviour from a young, inexperienced driver.” Acting Sergeant England said the man could’ve seriously injured or killed himself or others travelling at that speed. He’ll be charged on summons with dangerous driving, speeding and other traffic offences. Meanwhile, Melton police pulled over 144 drivers on the Easter long weekend, with 53 people caught speeding, eight testing positive for drugs, two of these also for drink driving, while a further two drivers were caught above the blood alcohol limit. “I worked every day [during the long weekend] and most drivers were superb,” Acting Sergeant England said. “Most of the public were well-behaved but there were the occasional ones who decided to speed or take drugs and drive.” In Moorabool, police detected 48 traffic offences – with most (32) for speeding.

More information on a planned extension of the Ravenhall landfill site is being sought by the Environment Protection Authority Victoria. The EPA has asked Landfill Operations Pty Ltd to provide more details before its application can be assessed. EPA development assessments manager Tim Faragher said the authority conducted an initial review to determine whether there was sufficient information to formally begin the process. Growth pressure in the spotlight Moorabool is amidst a population boom. Almost 600 people moved into the shire last year, up 1.9 per cent from 2014, making it the fourth fastest-growing regional municipality, Australian Bureau of Statistics data reveals. And mayor Allan Comrie has taken the opportunity to pressure state and federal governments to commit funds to this growth. Cr Comrie said there needs to be more investment in health, education and recreation services, and better road networks to keep up with demand. “Our towns are a great place to raise a family or retire to, but we need to keep pressure on federal and state governments to ensure we received our fair share of funding to cater for the rapid growth,” Cr Comrie said. “We still have residential estates being built, and with gas and sewerage connections in some of our smaller western towns, and health and aged-care expansions in Ballan, we expect many more people will want to call Moorabool home.” Moorabool’s proximity to Melbourne, Ballarat and Geelong, and its country lifestyle made the shire attractive, Cr Comrie said. There were almost 31,500 people living in Moorabool as of the end of last year. Meanwhile, Melton continues to experience massive population growth, with more than 5000 people moving into the municipality in 2015. Although it wasn’t the fastest growing metropolitan municipality in the state, Melton
ranked in the top five. National Growth Areas Alliance (NGAA) chairman Glenn Docherty said the latest ABS figures reveal the scale of growth in outer metropolitan suburbs and the need for a “serious commitment” to infrastructure in these areas. “These latest figures confirm what residents have known for a long time – that growth rates in outer suburbs are phenomenal,” Mr Docherty said. “They underscore the importance of our

- Glenn Docherty Fund our Future campaign. “To address the infrastructure problems in outer growth areas would cost $5 billion a year over the next 15 years.” Mr Docherty called on the federal government to commit to a long-term infrastructure fund, “Without it, we’re just playing around the edges,” he said. “The focus on outer growth areas is welcome, but we need a firm commitment from both sides of politics to a national infrastructure fund for outer growth areas. “We need a fund for long-term infrastructure. “This will benefit both the local community and the economy as a whole,” Mr Docherty said. “Without it, we’re just playing around the edges.”

Pick the right seed time At the root of productive food gardening is the art of seed saving. Everything else – germinating, fertilising, pruning – comes long after, says Edible Eden Design founder Karen Sutherland. “People don’t know how to recognise when the seed is right,” Ms Sutherland says. “Different plants’ seeds have different requirements.” Whether it is harvesting before seeds are ready, or not waiting for zucchinis to naturally pollinate, small mistakes can be costly. Seed saving is one of the most important parts of the food cycle, and it’s one of the only ways guaranteed to save gardeners money
– store-bought seedlings can be costly, Ms Sutherland says. “Often seeds should be harvested when they’re yellow, brown or black,” she says. “Definitely not green … for example, pumpkin seeds should be plump when harvesting.” Ms Sutherland will be explaining the ins and outs of seed saving at a free workshop in Taylors Hill this month. Land ‘grab’ angers owner By Sumeyya Ilanbey Members of the western suburbs’ Albanian community are angry that the state government plans to compulsorily acquire land bought more than 25 years ago for a community centre. The Albanian Australian Community Association bought a parcel of land in Rockbank in 1989 to build a centre where they could “speak their language, preserve their culture and practise their faith”. But nothing has been built on the land since, and now it looks set to be acquired for a regional park. As revealed by Star Weekly last month, the state government and Melton council are
working with surrounding landowners to decide the final boundary of the proposed Kororoit Regional Park, which is likely to be between Clarke Road and Sinclairs Road, near the Western Highway. One of the association’s founding members, Asip Demiri, has condemned the decision, saying the land belongs to the Albanian community, which still wants a community centre to be built. “I was the person instrumental in purchasing the land in 1989,” Mr Demiri said. “I was also instrumental in putting a stop on a sale in 2008. “The [Albanian] community has been kept in the dark . . . [not everyone] knows the government plans to acquire the land.”
Mr Demiri said the association had been unable to build the community centre because of internal conflict. “The land is ours and I don’t want to see anybody go near it . . . it’s for my son, my grandchildren and their children,” he said. “We want a community facility on it to show what our culture means to us, what the food’s like, what the people are about.” Association president Bashkim Bikiri said he hadn’t spoken to the members recently about the proposed park but had broadcast on local Albanian radio several times about the state government’s plans. “We don’t want to sell it, we want to build something,” he said.

Darley Park bill hits ratepayers Moorabool ratepayers will foot a $5000 repair bill after vandals destroyed clubrooms and equipment at Darley Park five times in the past two months. In the latest incident, vandals attempted to smash a window, causing about $400 damage. Hot water services have been smashed, aerials and doors broken, and scoreboards damaged in the past two months. Darley Football Club president Grant Wright said the destruction was “incredibly frustrating”. “This is ratepayers’ money that could be better spent somewhere else, but instead has to be spent on this,” he said. “It looks like it’s getting to the point where we have to vandal-proof the entire area, which is costly in itself.” Moorabool mayor Allan Comrie slammed the vandalism as a “disgrace”, and the vandals “idiots”, calling on any witnesses to contact police. “This mindless act costs ratepayers money, costs our staff time, costs children and park users the ability to enjoy the park, and has forced football and netball clubs off the park at times,” Cr Comrie said. “Our public spaces are for everyone to enjoy, and we don’t need idiots like this ruining it for all.” Moorabool police has been contacted for comment. What’s your favourite thing about living in Melton? The thing I like about living in Melton is Djerriwarrh Health Services – they help us. When we first moved to Melton, we had no-one to rely on. But after meeting Nicola, a community health nurse, we got all the help we need. What would you change about the area if you could?
I would like it if a hospital is built in Melton because when we are sick, travelling to Sunshine hospital is too far. How did you get involved with the Melton Women Making It Happen campaign? I got involved in the Melton Women Making It Happen campaign because when we have cultural festivals, us women do all the work, such as cooking, cleaning and decorating, where men don’t do anything because they work.
How important is staying active in the community to you? It is very important to stay active in the community because communities such as Djerriwarrh Health Services, New Hope Foundation and Melton community have given us support, and I am very thankful. You love to cook Burmese food – what does it symbolise to you? I cook Burmese food because we are Burmese,
and every time I cook it for my family, my kids will know about culture and background. I hope you like our Burmese food at Chin National Day. How important are campaigns, such as these, that showcase the work of local women? I believe that campaigns, such as Melton Women Making It Happen – that showcase the work of local women – are important … because it shows that women are just as equal as men.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir explores some Year of the Monkey offerings … Consider The Sauce and a few pals gathered for an informal Chinese New Year celebration recently, the venue being a brand new Chinese place called Mr Pan Fry. As previously noted, we love the intense diversity of Racecourse Road, but we rarely venture down this end, so I have no recall of what business was formerly at these premises. Mr Pan Fry is done out with crisp but basic furnishings and colours. The front window space is dedicated to on-view dumpling production, though by the time I think to photograph some of that action, work has ceased for the night. There’s a heap of dumpling varieties listed on the menu, which also extends to a variety of meat and vegetable main dishes, and some rudimentary rice and noodle offerings. We order with abandon, doubling up on some dishes to ensure there’s enough to satisfy all nine of our appetites. Shanghai fried noodles ($10.80) are a good, basic dish. And the broth-laden “baowie steamed juicy pork buns” ($10.80) are very excellent. Pot stickers (pan-fried chicken and prawn dumplings, $12.80) are served like a crispy upside-down pie. These, too, are very good. Stir-fried tofu with vegetables ($13.80) and fried tofu with pork mince and Sichuan sauce ($13.80) entice us away from dumplings. The latter’s tofu is a silky smooth treat in a dish that’s our most spicy of the night by quite a distance.
MR PAN FRY Address: 268 Racecourse Road, Flemington Phone: 0455 452 119 Stir-fried salted pepper ribs ($18) are nice, but not quite what we – well, what I – have been expecting. The tangy batter is rather like that which most of tonight’s group had across the road at Pacific Seafood BBQ House … in that case, the batter-coated chicken ribs. With pork ribs? Hmmm, interesting … chewy, but not quite a bullseye. In addition to all of the above, at Mr Pan Fry we also enjoy spring onion pancake. And we had a delicious, unctuous dish labelled stewed pork belly with chef special sauce ($20.80), which for some reason escapes scrutiny by my camera, but which is, perhaps, the hit of the night. We find the food at Mr Pan Fry to be mostly very good, with the dumplings rating a notch higher. The menu isn’t as long, but the approach is somewhat similar to the adjacent I Love Dumplings. I suspect, somehow, that Mr Pan Fry has a good chance of becoming a regular haunt. We’ve eaten well and having such a big group kept the price per head at a most admirable $22. SPORT Rebuilding Sharks circle for season’s opening Hillside coach Steve Burns knows there is no easing into the Essendon District Football League’s division 1 competition. The Sharks have a monster first month in which they will take on premiership contenders Craigieburn and Westmeadows and perennial finalists Taylors Lakes and Oak Park. Burns, in his second season at the Sharks, says his players understand that only their best will get the job done against the competition’s elite teams. “I think the club is on the right path,” he said. “We have a really good list, though it’s hard to compare it to other clubs yet … and those clubs look like they’ve recruited really well, too.” Burns says the first month is going to be “a really tough ask”.
“But at our best, we are capable of beating them all,” he said. “If we’re not at our best then we’re capable of losing all four as well.” Since finishing in eighth position last year, Hillside has worked hard in the off season to bring in experienced players. The Sharks have signed Thomas Drake from West Coburg and Mohamed Taleb from the Northern Saints. Both have previously played in division 1 premierships. “You never knock back a premiership player, especially when they’ve won a flag in this division,” Burns said. “They’ve come in and tried to set some training standards, which is good. “Our guys already trained well anyway, but it does help when you’ve got guys who are keen to get out there and do the work on the track.”
Also signing at Hillside are Andrew Papazoglou from the Northern Territory Football League, Riza Gashi from St Albans and Jordan Sinclair from Melton South. The Sharks will also unleash 12 players coming up from the under-18s, and Burns believes all will play senior football across the next two or three seasons. Even keel to Olympic seas By Liam Twomey Louis Schofield has been riding waves of success for some time now. The 17-year-old is a rising star of the national sailing scene, having already represented Australia at a junior level. Schofield competed at the Cadet World Championships in Weymouth, England, in 2014 as the youngest skipper of an Australian squad. Since then, the Williamstown resident has made the jump from the cadets division to the 29er class of boat. Despite the shift, Schofield has lost none of his competitive edge. “My future goal is to represent Australia at the Olympics,” Schofield said. “Moving on to the 29er, that is the next step towards that ultimate goal. “The 29er is the youth class of the 49er, which is the Olympic class,” he said. 42 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 5, 2016
“The plan is to get good on the 29er then get good on the 49er. I just need to keep taking steps.” Schofield’s results since making the move in class include three wins at the Mordialloc Regatta and a fourth place at the New South Wales Youth Championships. All indications were a big win was coming, and that arrived last month. Schofield, with partner Tom Alexander, claimed gold at the Victorian State Championships. “We were in second place for most of the regatta,” Schofield said. “The last day of the regatta was a bit more windy. “That was when we were able to get in front. “We were competing against a team from Tasmania and they couldn’t keep up with us, which was nice to see after sailing behind them for most of the regatta. “We were really happy to jump in front of them at the end.” Following the win, Schofield is now in
contention to be picked for the Australian squad going to the Youth World Championships in Holland later this year. In the meantime, he has already turned his attention to this month’s Victorian Youth Championships. For his outstanding sporting achievements, Schofield is the monthly nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star Award. The award is run by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club in conjunction with Star Weekly Weekly. Schofield will receive $1000 donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club and other prizes to assist in his future sporting goals. The Don Deeble Rising Star Award recognises young athletes in the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at a state and national level. It was a tough weekend for Melton in the men’s Big V basketball. The Thoroughbreds lost twice and slipped to a 1-2 record for the season. The pain started for Melton on Saturday night in front of the club’s home fans against Geelong. Melton welcomed back star import and last season’s championship player Ivan Harris, whose start to the season had been delayed because of a visa issue. But the Thoroughbreds struggled to make the most of opportunities in the opening term, falling 14 points behind. It was a tale of differing results from behind the three-point line for the two teams. Melton went 0-5 in the first term from beyond the arc, while Geelong hit five of its nine attempts. Despite the Thoroughbreds’ best efforts to close the margin over the next two quarters, Geelong remained in control of the match, with a 20-10 final term sealing its 74-58 win. Off season recruit Jason Todorov was the stand-out for Melton, scoring 14 points, while Harris scored 11 in his first hit out of the season. Matthew Jukes worked hard to provide a spark off the bench, and finished with 10 points. It was the Geelong starting unit that did almost all the damage though, scoring 64 of the club’s 74 points. Melton was then faced with a quick turnaround to hit the road to face Blackburn on Sunday. At first, it looked like the disappointment of the night before would catapult the Thoroughbreds to a bounce-back win. Melton led for the majority of the first quarter. But a poor shooting performance made it hard to stick with Blackburn. The Thoroughbreds converted at just 34 per cent from the field to fall well behind, eventually going down by 21 points, 87-66. Again it was Jukes who tried to push his team, with his game-high 14 points. But there was no slowing down an even Blackburn, which had four players reach double figures. Liam Twomey

Panthers keep faith in cubs By Liam Twomey Melton South has no fear heading into the Ballarat Football League season. In fact, head coach Mark Pedersen requested that his side play reigning premiers Darley for the first match of the year. The club was originally scheduled to take on Melton to start its season, but Pedersen saw an opportunity to put his young group on the big stage, and he jumped at it. “We were supposed to play Melton first up. I looked at the fixture and saw that the reigning premiers weren’t going to unfurl their flag until round three,” he said. “I thought this would be an opportunity for us to play on the big stage. The club hasn’t done that for a long time. “Why not play against the best in round one and then you will know exactly where you sit. “I think it’s good for footy as well. It’s a stand-alone game and I think there will be a lot of excitement there,” Pedersen said. The Panthers have been quietly going about business in the off season, looking to improve after a tough 2015 season in which they won just two games and finished the year 10th on the ladder. The club is hoping short-term pain will lead to some long-term gain. Week in, week out last year, the Panthers were one of the youngest teams in the competition after throwing support behind a youth push. Pedersen said a key goal for his coaching panel in the off season was to retain that young core.

“What we did last year was actually have a clean-out,” he said. “By the time I got to the club, it was very late to recruit. It was a real challenge to take a club, not just a team but a club, and try to take them to the next level. We played a lot of kids. We probably played 12 under-18s every week. “They will benefit from that experience this year.” As well as their young stars, Melton has brought in some experience to try to help out this year. The Panthers signed brothers Benjamin and Mark Sortino, as well as ruckman Blake Henderson. All three have VFL experience at Coburg. They will be joined by Tom Stoneham, a big man from the Essendon District Football League. Rounding out the club’s signings is Nick Wilson from the Northern Football League. “We’ve got a bit of height now that we didn’t have last year,” Pedersen says. “We believe we’ve recruited the right sort of person for our club. The culture is very important here and we want people to come for the right reasons. “We’re not trying to buy players; we are trying to sell our club to our recruits.”

Melton Phoenix coach Peter Schwellinger is happy with his side’s season-starting 2-0 win but believes there is plenty of improvement to come from his players. The Phoenix took care of business against Altona North in the state league 4 game, scoring once in each half to secure the points. “I’m definitely happy to get the three points but I wasn’t really happy with the way that we played,” Schwellinger said. “We looked lethargic at times. Maybe the boys were a little nervous, being the first league game, and wanted to get it under their belts. “Last year, we probably wouldn’t have won that game. “This year we were able to grind it out and get away with it, which was a good sign.” It was perennial scorer Jordan Borg who got things started for Melton, scoring the first goal in the lead-up to half-time.

The Phoenix doubled its advantage through Jason Moody in the second half. Melton now turns its attention to the club’s first home match of the season, against Point Cook this week. Point Cook had a 2-2 draw against Sebastopol on Saturday. “It is going we be a very tough game,” Schwellinger said. “Point Cook is amongst the favourites to win the league. That is what everyone has been saying throughout the pre-season. “It is always tough to play them. We had a very good game last year when we played them at home but then they came back and beat us away. “We expect a really hard battle. There is a rivalry there with them and we are really looking forward to taking them on.” Liam Twomey
Laker guns fire big time By Liam Twomey The Brian Lake/Mathew Sutton forward line, talked up through the pre-season as having explosive potential, has wasted no time delivering for Caroline Springs. The Lakers enjoyed a huge 178-point win over Manor Lakes in their Western Region Football League division 2 season opener at the weekend. Sutton, recruited from Melton South, booted 11 goals. In his first hit-out since playing in an AFL premiership with Hawthorn last year, Lake kicked seven goals and was one of the Lakers’ best players. Caroline Springs coach Scott Korczynski said it was a great day for the club. “We started pre-season in the middle of November,” he said. “There was a new game plan and new recruits, so training has been a lot different to what it’s been in the past. “We have worked very hard and the result is reward for effort. “Both those two key forwards worked really well in tandem. Having them there is going to be a real asset for the team this year.” While the Lakers’ forward-half players dominated, Korczynski was also impressed with the pressure his players applied around the field. Caroline Springs gave up just five goals in the 33.15 (213) - 5.5 (35) win. “Our ball movement was really good,” Korczynski said. “I was really happy with the way we were able to get it into our forwards … we put a big emphasis on our defensive pressure as well. “We won by 178 points … we had 55 tackles, which really shows guys buying in on pressuring the opposition and creating those turnovers. That’s what we’re looking for.” Caroline Springs will enjoy a week off this round because of the bye. Its next opponent will be North Footscray in round three. Despite it being in the season’s early stages, that match could be a finals preview with both sides seen as premiership contenders. “Even with the bye, we’ll just continue to train as usual,” Korczynski said. “The bye probably gives us a chance to have a look at what North Footscray is doing. Then we’ll come into round three and it will be a very challenging match. “North Footscray is probably the benchmark this year. We are still trying to find out where we sit and it will be an interesting challenge for us.”

Two old rivals will be centre stage in the Riddell District Football League on Saturday when Melton Centrals and Rockbank open their campaigns with a stand-alone twilight fixture at Arnolds Creek Reserve. It will be Centrals’ first official game at their new home base after 25 years at McPherson Park. Centrals welcomed a host of new players in the off season, including John O’Brien from the Western Region Football League and Matt Gilmore from the Ballarat league. Meanwhile, Rockbank has also undergone a large player turnover in the off season, the Rams farewelling Lachlan Calder, Rodney Rich and Tristan Zerafa to the WRFL. Saturday’s match will kick off at 5pm.

It was a tough debut for promoted Spring Hills in the state league 4 west soccer competition on Saturday, the Stallions going down 6-1 to Surf Coast. Spring Hills defenders were under pressure from the start and Surf Coast took a 3-0 lead into half-time. The Stallions eventually broke through for a goal, Charlie Nash delivering in the dying seconds. Spring Hills will be hoping to bounce back at home against Bell Park this week. Elsewhere at the weekend, Brimbank Stallions smashed Truganina Hornets 5-0 while Point Cook and Sebastopol played a 2-2 draw.

It was a good night for Melton in Big V youth league basketball on Saturday, the Thoroughbreds securing their second win of the season by toppling Maccabi. Melton dominated from the outset, scoring an impressive 27 points in the first term. Although Maccabi was able to fight back a little as half time approached, the home side was never in real danger. Melton enjoyed another scoring blitz, this time in the third term, to seal the 79-64 victory. Jimmy Mullins was the standout for Melton, scoring 15 points. Also impressive was Liam Allison with 14 points and seven rebounds.

The Western Region Football League division 1 season kicks off this weekend with all four Brimbankbased teams in action. Albion will have a great chance to get an early win under its belt when the Cats take on division 1 newcomer Wyndhamvale at Wyndhamvale South Oval. Albion has welcomed a host of former players back to the club in the off season, notably Josh Bench, who played in the VFL with Williamstown last year. Also rejoining the club are James Taylor, Jeremy Mills and Troy Kelm. Elsewhere, St Albans will play its first game under new coach Fabian Carelli. The Saints will take on Hoppers Crossing in an away fixture at Hogans Road. Rounding out the action, premiership favourite Deer Park faces Sunshine at Kinder Smith Reserve.
