Family ram in ban jam By Esther Lauaki Jackie Chan the ram’s days of being out on Maddingley streets appear to be numbered. The 10-year-old merino is at the centre of a long-running dispute between the ram’s owner, Godwin Aquilina, his neighbours and Moorabool council. In 2013, Moorabool council ordered Mr Aquilina to construct a secure pen to contain Jackie Chan after several reports of the ram charging residents. Mr Aquilina was granted a permit to keep the house-raised family pet at his Love Close home on the condition it was desexed and that the permit would be immediately revoked if the ram escaped again.

Neighbours Debra and Bruce Bullock, with two other residents, fronted Moorabool council at question time last week in a bid to get the animal removed. “Jackie Chan is constantly out on the streets,” Mrs Bullock said. “Council officers attended the property [on April 5] and the ram was just put back into the property. “The other day he was tied to the give way sign. I want to know why the council allows this to carry on.” The council moved to discuss the request in a closed session. Moorabool mayor Alan Comrie on Thursday said that the April 5 incident was the last straw. “We’ve got to go in and remove the ram,” he said. “In the past, when we’ve tried to deal with

the owner of the ram – he’s taken legal action, we’ve had to go to court and it’s been a difficult process. “[But] the owner is in breach of the conditions of the permit to keep it inside a pen. We’ll be talking to the police about how to go about removing the animal.” When approached by Star Weekly Mr Aquilina said he was with Jackie Chan, who was tethered to the front gate and there was no breach of the permit, on April 5. He said intervention orders prevent him and the Bullocks from talking to each other. Mr Aquilina said he was being bullied by neighbours and the council. “This situation has been going on for many years.

“All these accusations, I find quite hurtful and quite offensive. My children would be shattered if they took Jackie Chan away. “The first words out of my daughter’s mouth last week were about Jackie Chan … she brags about him and she tells people about him. “I’ve got a double-rail, double-pale, double-posted fence to keep Jackie Chan inside for the rest of his life. “The pen that I built had to be within … 1.2-metres high and 30 square metres in area. It’s unethical and not a way for him to live. That’s why I take him out for walks. “I have to be cruel to my animal in order to abide by their rules. I’m between a rock and a hard place.”

Vandals strike again at Bacchus Marsh clubs Vandals destroyed clubroom doors, graffitied walls, damaged locker rooms and broke locks at a Bacchus Marsh sports reserve early last week. The attack on several sports groups at Masons Lane Recreation Reserve left a damage bill of between $2000 and $3000. It is the latest in a string of vandalism on Moorabool sporting and community clubs. Moorabool mayor Allan Comrie said the council had “had enough”. “There has been an increase in vandalism and graffiti, not just in the school holidays,

but throughout this year at all our recreation reserves,” Cr Comrie said. “Not only do acts such as this cost ratepayers money in repairs, but it threatens the use of the facilities for sporting and community groups. “This behaviour is unacceptable.” Vandals forced entry into the Bacchus Marsh Baseball Club’s scorers box, destroyed the shed doors and broke door locks. Club president Darren Power said nothing had been stolen “but it looked like they were looking for something”.

“These acts are affecting the rest of the community; kids are trying to play baseball and now we’re having to spend all this time cleaning it up,” Mr Power said. Dianne Lee said locks had been broken and clubroom doors graffitied at the Dog Obedience Club’s facilities. “We had a lousy clubroom until the state government gave us a grant [matched] by council. Now we’ve got a really good clubroom – it’s [the vandalism] a real shame.” The Bacchus Marsh Soccer Club’s rooms, at

Masons Lane Reserve, were also broken into. Sergeant Troy Morrow of Moorabool Crime Investigation Unit said police had noticed “a bit of a spike” in vandalism recently. “It’s hard to say who’s involved … but you do get a lot more foot traffic [during the school holidays] around town, with more people out and about late at night,” Sergeant Morrow said. VU jobs, skills centre coming to Melton

Rebuild ruling upheld By Sumeyya Ilanbey Metricon Homes has lost a Supreme Court appeal against a ruling which ordered it to pay for the demolition and rebuild of a Melton West couple’s ‘dream home’. Earl and Shelley Softley moved into their Long Tree Drive house six years ago. Within months cracks opened in plasterboards, cornices separated from ceilings and skirting boards came off. A Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal hearing in December 2014 heard the slab had lifted 44 millimetres at one end of the house and 16 millimetres at the other. At the time, VCAT ruled that Metricon pay

for the demolition of the Softley’s existing house and the construction of a new house by another builder. Metricon was also to pay for removalists and rental accommodation for the Softley’s while their house was being built. Metricon Homes lodged an appeal in the Supreme Court. At a hearing last week the VCAT decision was upheld. Ms Shelley said it had been a “long and exhausting” six years for the couple. She said they had paid $200,000 for what they believed was their dream home – only to have it turn out to be a nightmare. “I don’t even know if I can put the emotional toll in words – it’s been an emotional rollercoaster … knowing you’ve done nothing

to create this problem, but being unable to get a solution. Our lives have been put on hold.” The couple’s lawyer, Robert Auricchio of Slater and Gordon, said the Supreme Court decision should “send a clear message” to the building industry. “It is time for the industry to review the extent of slab heave, to co-operate with homeowners to rectify the issue and to change design and construction practices to prevent a repeat of this disastrous problem,” Mr Auricchio said. Metricon Homes chief executive Mario Biasin said the company was disappointed with the court decision and would review the judgement. “We are firmly of the view that this case is unique,” he said.

Victoria Polytechnic will open a new job and skills centre in Melton later this year. Victoria University’s TAFE division has already opened job and skills centres in Footscray and Sunshine as part of a state government program for prospective students and employers to obtain free advice on training, job opportunities and links to other services. TAFE division vice-president Grant Deher has welcomed the centre initiative. “They are a starting point for prospective students looking for training, workers seeking to re-skill or the unemployed seeking to retrain,” he said. “Employers can also use the centres to upskill their workforce or assist with job vacancies.” Students, workers or job seekers can use the centres to access skill assessments, information about in-demand skills, career advice and counselling. They can also receive referrals to a range of support services that focus on careers and employment, education and training, welfare and financial guidance. Details about the location or opening date for the Melton centre are yet to be determined. The Footscray Skills and Job Centre is at 138 Nicholson Street. The Sunshine centre is at 460 Ballarat Road. Ravenhall tip plan heads to panel By Sumeyya Ilanbey The state government has ‘called in’ Cleanaway’s planning application to expand the size and extend the life of the Ravenhall tip. The application, lodged with Melton council on February 29, proposed expanding the landfill by 311 hectares to the west and northwest of the existing site ‌ and extending its permit until 2069. Kororoit MP Marlene Kairouz said Planning Minister Richard Wynne will oversee the application process.

She said the application would now go to an independent planning panel which would consider submissions and hold public hearings before preparing a report for Mr Wynne, who will make the final decision. “People living around the landfill want certainty and they want to be able to attend hearings and make submissions, which the Labor government is delivering as promised,� Ms Kairouz said. “This is the most appropriate way forward to ensure a rigorous and independent process – one that involves the local community. “The panel members will be experts and able

to assess all aspects of what is a very complex issue.� Ms Kairouz said she would continue to work with residents and provide regular updates about the process. Stop the Tip campaigner Marion Martin said the group was pleased the state government was fulfilling its 2014 election promise to take over the application. But she said the hard work starts now. “We just hope that, when this goes to the panel, everybody gets the opportunity to put in a submission, which is genuinely considered, and it doesn’t end up being rubber-stamped.�

Ms Martin said the group would organise workshops to help people compose their submissions and have their say. Cleanaway state general manager Clete Elms said the decision by the state government to call in the application was expected, and an important part of the process. “Cleanaway is responsive to any concerns the local community might have and we will work with the independent panel to ensure any questions about our application are answered,� Mr Elms said. Vigil unites community Family and friends will gather in Sunshine on Friday to remember slain mother-of-four Fiona Warzywoda. Sunshine Business Association organised the vigil to remember Ms Warzywoda and show that the Sunshine community stands united against family violence. The Melton West mother was stabbed to death outside the Sunshine Magistrates’ Court two years ago. Association president Bruce White said the vigil would be held annually to signify “that we are unilaterally opposed to domestic violence�. “The reason we’re doing this is because we want to educate the community about what it means to have respectful relationships; an important Australian value,� he said. The vigil will be held on the corner of Hampshire and Devonshire roads, from 6.30-7.30pm, at the site of a tribute tree

dedicated to Ms Warzywoda. A Sunshine-based group of knitters, known as Commuknity, has spent the past three months knitting a piece of fabric big enough to “yarn bomb� the tree. Commuknity member and Sunshine resident Annie Bailey said the group of about 16 women had met weekly to create the piece. She said the project had been therapeutic. “Everyone in Sunshine was deeply affected by what happened,� she said. “We’re all scared to go out on our own, but as a group, we feel we’re reclaiming the public space.� Ms Warzywoda’s younger sister, Jolene, said family members would attend the vigil. Craig McDermott, Ms Warzywoda’s defacto of 18 years, has been charged with her murder. His trial resumed before the Supreme Court last week. Alexandra Laskie

War veterans, their families and friends will be out in force for Caroline Springs RSL’s second ever Anzac Day march on Sunday. About 100 people are expected to attend the march which will start at the police station in College Street at 10.30am and make its way to the memorial in The Parade. “We had our first ever march last year; it was an idea from our vice president Bob Matthewman. In 1934, Turkey’s leader Mustafa Kemal Ataturk wrote to Australian mothers who had lost sons in the 1915 Gallipoli battles. The words were offered to give some comfort to the grieving families. “Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives,” the letter read, “you are now lying in the soil of a friendly country, therefore rest in peace. “There is no difference between the Johnnies and Mehmets to us, where they lie side by side here in this country of ours. “You, the mothers, who sent their sons from far away countries, wipe away your tears. Your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land, they have become our sons as well.” More than 80 years since the letter was penned, and a century after the Gallipoli battles, Australians and Turks maintain strong ties and friendships. ‘Seeds of friendship’ have been planted on Australian and Turkish soil; the two groups stand side by side during dawn services; and veterans march together, in peace, at Anzac Day commemorations. Strong relationships and alliances were formed during the war, says Ramazan Altintas, president of the Turkish sub-branch of the Victorian Returned Services League. Cigarettes were traded, wounded ‘enemies’ helped, and water shared on the frontlines. Mr Altintas said there was no sense of hostility between the two groups, who were both fighting for their country and people.

Relays offer hope When Nicole Tresize battled non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma 18 years ago, she says community support would have gone a long way to help her cope. About 80 cannabis plants were seized after police were called to a disturbance at a house in Osterley Close, Caroline Springs, on March 30. Police said a number of people attempted to flee the address when police attended about 9.30am. Police discovered the house contained a large cannabis crop. The occupants were arrested and a search warrant obtained. A 24-year-old male was charged with cultivating a narcotic and a 23-year-old female was charged with possessing a drug of dependence. Both were remanded in custody. A 59-year-old male was handed over to immigration.

Cops need help to end violence ‘‘

“That means we need more police on the beat as well as tougher sanctions for offenders once they’re caught.” A spokesman for acting Police Minister Robin Scott said the government was “working closely with Victoria Police to ensure they have the resources they need”. Meanwhile, a Victoria Police spokeswoman said the force was committed to implementing the commission’s recommendations and working towards “eliminating” domestic violence. “We will now work with the government and other agencies to determine the amount and type of resources required to implement these recommendations and further protect victims of family violence.”

The Police Association of Victoria has renewed its call for extra frontline police officers at Melton to fight the scourge of domestic violence. According to association president Ron Iddles, an extra 81 officers are needed at Melton to merely “backfill those currently deployed to family violence teams and increase numbers at chronically understaffed police stations”. The appeal follows the findings of the Royal Commission into Family Violence, which heard that “high and escalating workloads” of domestic violence cases were placing a “significant strain” on officers, requiring an urgent increase in police numbers. Several agencies, including Good Shepherd and Domestic Violence Victoria, echoed the association’s call “advocating a significant increase in the number of frontline members so as to guarantee a timely and adequate response and follow-up to family violence incidents”. Mr Iddles did not say how many more police would be needed statewide to tackle the chronic problem of domestic violence, but he said numbers across the state had reached “critically low” levels. “We have recently met with the chief commissioner [Graham Ashton] and with the government seeking a joint commitment to urgently recruit hundreds more police officers to plug some of the gaping holes at police stations, like Melton,” Mr Iddles said. “We shouldn’t be constantly chasing our tails on police numbers.

“Government needs to properly commit to resource Victoria Police for the long term with uniformed officers who can drive police vans and respond to calls for assistance.” Opposition policing spokesman Edward O’Donohue said the Royal Commission’s findings highlighted the need for more police. “It’s past time that [Premier] Daniel Andrews made community safety a priority,” Mr O’Donohue said.

New twist in tower fight By Sumeyya Ilanbey Residents have claimed a small victory in their fight against a mobile phone tower at the Brookside Recreation Reserve. Councillors last week agreed to go back to Vodafone to see if an alternative location for the tower could be found. Caroline Springs resident Seamus Ryan, who heads the campaign for the tower’s relocation, told Star Weekly he was “pleasantly surprised” by the outcome, calling it a “step in the right direction”. Caroline Springs and Brookside residents have been up in arms against the 30-metre mobile phone tower which received a planning permit last August. They claim neither Vodafone nor Melton council sufficiently informed them about the permit application. Mr Ryan said while last week’s council decision was “not an overall victory”, it proved “people getting involved does make a difference”. A petition of 1400 signatures was tabled at last month’s council meeting. It called for the cancellation of a lease between the council and Vodafone, or for the tower’s relocation to a less “community-sensitive” site. Officers recommended that councillors “note the petition and take no further action”, as council had “no power to unilaterally break the lease”. But Watts ward councillor Lara Carli moved an alternative recommendation that the council talk to Vodafone about relocating the monopole, with “a report to come back … on other appropriate sites and associated costs”. Her recommendation was seconded by Cr Renata Cugliari and supported by councillors Bob Turner, Nola Dunn and Myles Bentley. Cr Sophie Ramsey was absent, and Cr Kathy

Majdlik declared an indirect conflict of interest, removing herself from the chambers. Meanwhile, a planning application by Vodafone for a mobile phone tower at a Taylors Hill reserve, commonly known as the Melbourne water tank reserve, was heard at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal almost two weeks ago. Vodafone amended its initial application, reducing the height of the tower from 25 metres

to 17 metres and relocating it 45 metres south of its proposed site. At last week’s meeting, officers recommended that council write to VCAT stating it no longer objected to the issuing of a permit. But Cr Carli, supported by councillors Cugliari, Dunn, Bentley, Turner and Majdlik, successfully moved to advise VCAT it did not support the amended plans or any plans to build a tower at that location.

New landscaping, a barbecue shelter and exercise stations will be added to Melton’s Fraser Street reserve thanks to a $271,000 state government Interface Growth Fund grant. Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins joined Melton MP Don Nardella and mayor Kathy Majdlik for the much-anticipated funding announcement recently. Works are due to start in early August and take about six months. Melton council youth and recreation manager Adrian Burns said designs are being finalised before going to the state government for approval. Cr Majdlik said the council appreciates working collaboratively across all levels of government. Country women are in a jam By Esther Lauaki Bacchus Marsh Country Women’s Association needs its own home base. The branch meets monthly at the RSL Hall on Main Street, but there’s no space for storage. Members have been waiting for two years as Moorabool council juggles vacant space at the Darley Hub. CWA branch president Yvonne Spargo asked the council to prioritise the CWA’s relocation at Moorabool council’s meeting on April 6. Moorabool mayor Allan Comrie says the

council will continue to work with the group to find a permanent home. Association spokeswoman Karin Wilson says CWA tables, chairs and other items are cluttering up the lounges, garages and sheds of its members around Moorabool. “We’ve had a lot of furniture donated to us to help us set up properly,” she says. “It isn’t furniture that we would just want to sell or get rid of, because it’s very good quality. “We have our belongings stored in people’s houses, garages and living rooms. All we are asking is for a space to work in.”

land to build a home base on but, when they found out that the town was in need of a hospital, they sold that lot of land and donated the money toward the hospital. “We’ve done a lot for this community and we would love a place to be able to continue our work,” Ms Wilson said. “We were told there would be a 12-month wait on a space at Darley, but nothing has happened” Fiskville Country Fire Association currently occupies the rooms at the Darley Hub after its training facility was closed last year.

A spooky pub bar none Thrill-seekers will investigate the twisted history of the Blackwood Hotel on the pub’s coming ghost tours. The “haunted” hotel will host its next ghost tour on Tuesday, May 3, and spooks and sceptics are welcome. Hotel owners Michael Boyd and Darren Lynch are convinced that hotel ghosts exist. “There’s definitely an energy here,” Mr Boyd said. “We’ve had the hotel for about 15 months, but we’ve lived in town for many years. “We bought the place knowing it had a great deal of history behind it. “There was a girl who used to live across the road from here … she was killed in the kitchen inside the hotel when the shellite iron she was using to press her clothes exploded. She had long red hair and fair skin. “She’s often seen walking the halls of the pub and we’ve also seen her when we’ve been working late.”

Blackwood Hotel, established in 1869, was once the town morgue and has been the scene of many inquests, Mr Boyd said. “On a recent tour, we had paranormal activity in the parlour, the cellar where the morgue slab is, and in room three there were some shadowy figures seen behind some of the customers,” he says. “It’s a very enjoyable night and we will be doing another investigation here very soon.” Bookings for the tours, on May 3 and June 7, are essential as places are limited to 15. She spoke to Esther Lauaki about her recent move from 40 acres in Bacchus Marsh to Melton suburbia. What’s your connection to Moorabool? My main connection is to Bacchus Marsh. I was a resident of Moorabool shire for 20 years until moving to Melton in December last year. My volunteer work encompasses both Melton and Bacchus Marsh communities.

You’re quite active in online community forums. Which ones are you involved in? I have started a couple of online forums on Facebook, including Moorabool shire residents: Working Together, the Bacchus Marsh EasterFest page, and the latest, Waterford Melton South. It’s a great way to get your voice out there … and it’s a good way to keep up-to-date with what’s going on. What makes you want to be involved in your community? I love seeing people happy, and being part of local events, and groups allows me to help make this happen. Seeing the smiles on people,

What community groups are you part of? I am a leader of Rovers for Derek Foden Rover crew, the 18 to 26 years section of scouting. The crew hosts members from Melton, Bacchus Marsh and Ballan Scout groups. I also work with a fantastic team on Bacchus Marsh EasterFest to raise funds for Djerriwarrh Health Services. I have been involved in many of my children’s sports on committees, including Bacchus Marsh West Golf Club junior program – coaching the children, organising dinner, raffles, an adult competition, prizes. I’ve also been involved with Bacchus Marsh Pony Club and been a Bacchus Marsh Soccer Club committee member and canteen co-ordinator.

you take pride in knowing you are a part of something bigger … it’s going back to old roots of “love thy neighbour”. What do you love about your Melton community? Most of my love is really for Moorabool seeing I have lived most of my life there (pretty much all of my adult life) – beautiful country so close to three major cities, everyone knows everyone.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds an ideal spot behind the flowers to chill out over a casual lunch Down behind a Mount Alexander Road florist is a cool, green space just right for a chilled-out lunch on a sunny Saturday. It’s retro central – in the form of armchairs, sofas and more. And retro, too, in the form of the kitchen and serving area, for which purposes a vintage caravan has been pressed into service. Given the tight space situation, it’s no surprise the food line-up is equally tight and also light. That’s fine by us – on the way there we mused over possibilities such as Somalian, Chinese BBQ meats and dumplings, but the truth is we’re just not THAT hungry. Our jaffles arrive looking as pretty as pictures. Bennie adores his Doori Time! ($8.50) with its chicken and cheese swimmingly soaked in a delicious dark sauce. It’s unclear if the shredded chook has spent any time in a tandoori oven, but it matters not. This jaffle comes with a pot of raita – nice touch, that. My Brekkie Time ($8.50) is good, too, though doesn’t have quite the same sort of flavour hit. The ham is indeed cut thickly and it works fine with the egg and sauce. Our matching $3.80 cafe lattes are spot on. It’s worth signing up to the Little garden Cafe Facebook page, wherein specials such as a Beefy Slaw sanger of “succulent bbq pulled beef, creamy housemade slaw, mozzarella cheese, toasted on organic sourdough� are regularly listed.

SPORT New recruits to add vital experience The quest for redemption starts now at the Diggers Rest Football Club. The Burras have been the most consistent team in the Riddell District Football League for three years, qualifying for three grand finals in a row. But they have come up short each time, narrowly going down to Romsey twice and Riddell in 2013. But head coach Shaun Sims isn’t interested in looking back. Instead, he and his committee have been planning for the future throughout a busy off season. “Our main goal was to retain our players,” Sims said. “That should be the goal before you do any sort of recruiting. “We were really happy because that was done fairly early. We have managed to keep everyone we wanted and bring in a few players we think can make an impact.” Along with exciting youngsters, the club has brought in some vital experience. In December, the Burras signed former AFL duo Cale Morton and Taylor Hine to their 2016 squad. Morton, a midfielder and forward, was drafted by Melbourne in 2007 and went on to play 73 games for the Demons. He booted 33 goals in that time before being traded to West Coast at the end of the 2012 season. Last season, the 25-year-old played for Coburg in the VFL.

Hine, drafted out of the Calder Cannons, was one of the first players to be selected by the Gold Coast Suns. He played nine games for the Suns before moving to North Melbourne for two years. The 23-year-old is expected to slot into the Burras’ midfield. “The boys have been really good,” said Sims of his new recruits.

“Taylor hasn’t missed a training session all year. I think he is enjoying being back in the local football environment … he is a really good leader on the track. He is happy to instruct and talk to our younger guys. “Cale is just starting to get cracking now. He will play in our practice match this week. He is going well.” The signings of Morton and Hine will go a long way to replacing club best and fairest Jason Williams, who has moved to VFL club Port Melbourne. Williams is hoping the move will be a stepping stone into the AFL. Another out from the Burras grand final day side is Sims, who will be non-playing coach this year. Addressing his goals for the season, Sims said it was far too early to be talking about premiership success. “We think we got a lot right last year and we have addressed the other things,” he said. “The main thing is to be a successful club. That can come down to winning the whole thing but I think if you’re thinking about that now you’re in a bit of strife. “It needs to be about putting yourself into that best position come finals time. “There is so much that can happen in a full season. We will try and put ourselves in that best position.”

Passion flows for local derby One of Melton’s biggest sports rivalries will be renewed this Saturday night when the Bloods and the Panthers square off in a Ballarat Football League blockbuster. Melton and Melton South haven’t been at the top end of the BFL ladder for some time but that hasn’t stopped their clashes from delivering some great games. Last year, the pair played out a thrilling draw in round one. A year earlier, a last-second Melton goal snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in another classic. As they try to climb back up the ladder, the Bloods have strengthened their squad in the off-season under head coach Brad Murphy, signing ruckman Mark Maric from the Essendon District Football League. Also joining the club is former VFL player Jack Walker. The Panthers have welcomed to the club brothers Benjamin and Mark Sortino, as well as Blake Henderson. Melton South will be coached by Mark Pedersen, who is in his second year at the club. Saturday’s game will be at Melton’s McPherson Park from 7pm.

Legend’s tough decision By Liam Twomey There were a lot of factors drawing Mathew Sutton to the Caroline Springs Football Club during the off-season. He lives locally and his son dons a Lakers’ jumper in the juniors. Sutton is also great mates with both the club’s senior football manager, Marc Raak, and off-season recruit, former AFL champion Brian Lake. Furthermore, there was the chance to help his community club enjoy some breakthrough success in the Western Region Football League. However, none of those things made it any easier for Sutton to farewell his previous club. He’s a legend at Melton South after being a long-time star in the Ballarat Football League. Sutton said moving on was an incredibly tough decision. “Melton South will always be my football club. I spent 12 years there. “You can never take that away,” he said. “I love the club so much. “I look at football a little differently, I suppose. You do it for memories, not for money. “I’ve got great memories at Melton South and still a lot of great friends there. “But I wasn’t able to play first division football any more. I didn’t think I was up to it.” Sutton signed with the division 2 Lakers late last year, and his arrival gave the club’s growing premiership credentials another boost. The Lake-Sutton forward combination was talked up as potentially dominant, and it didn’t take the duo long to deliver. In Caroline Springs’ round one win against Manor Lakes, the pair combined for 18 goals, with Sutton slotting 11.

Sutton was quick to deflect the attention from his own performance, instead highlighting the work of the Lakers’ midfield in setting up the win. He said it was a great experience to play side-by-side with Lake. “It’s great for the football club to have someone of Brian’s calibre. “He’s a three-time AFL premiership player. I feel sorry for the backmen each week who have to play on him.”

Sutton hasn’t finished creating memories in his football career and says being a Caroline Springs local makes even stronger the desire to help the club break through to win its first finals game at senior level. “We’ve lived in the area for a number of years now,” he says. “If I did get the opportunity to have some success at the club, it would be nice to say you were a part of it. “Hopefully, the club does win a finals game this year. “We finished fifth last year, so we need to be realistic. There’s a big jump. “We just need to take these steps and see how we go. At the moment we’re heading in the right direction, but there’s a long way to go.” Caroline Springs will take on North Footscray this week.

New digs christened with a win By Liam Twomey On what will go down as one of the biggest days in the club’s history, Melton Centrals ensured their first ever match at Arnolds Creek Reserve would be remembered for all the right reasons. Melton defeated local rival Rockbank in Riddell District Football League senior division to get its 2016 campaign off to the perfect start. Played as a stand-alone match on Saturday night, Centrals won 18.26 (134) – 4.1 (25). It wasn’t just the footballers who marked the special occasion with a win. The Melton netballers also got their season off to a great start, securing the points against Rockbank. But the day was always about more than just the four points for Centrals. It has taken months of hard work to get the club relocated from McPherson Park into its new home in the heart of Melton. Centrals president Paul Sinclair said the move had made a big impact on the club. “It has been massive,” he said. “The facilities are state-of-the-art, as are the playing areas and the lights. We are so excited. “Our junior playing numbers, for both football and netball, have increased markedly, as well. There is a lot of interest in our club from all over the community, which is really exciting.” Although there are plenty of positives attached to the relocation, it didn’t make it any easier for the Centrals to say goodbye to their former home at McPherson Park. The Centrals were first formed in 1995 and initially trained at Melton South Rugby Club before moving to McPherson Park in 1998. “It was a little bittersweet to leave,” Sinclair

Cobras strike out in off season recruiting Bacchus Marsh president Adam Sutherland is confident his Ballarat Football League club will improve this season. But as for how much, that is the million dollar question. After just missing a place in the finals last year, the Cobras looked to strengthen their playing list with some important signings in the off-season. However, the club struck out on a number of key signatures, leaving it a somewhat unknown commodity heading into this week’s first round. “We had a couple of things with potential recruits that didn’t pan out for various reasons,” Sutherland said. “There were some key areas we needed to bolster. With those players not coming, it means we weren’t able to do that. “We are still hopeful of bringing in someone. We have a couple of irons in the fire. We have the funds and the points to do it,” he said. “We think we have improved on last year. As for how much, we are about to find out.” Of the players not returning to Bacchus

Marsh this season, key forward Peter Shepherd has departed for Northern Football League. Shepherd booted 51 goals last year. Steven Shaw has gone to the Eastern Football League, while Alex Sweet has joined the Riddell District Football League. Bacchus Marsh will kick off its 2016 campaign with a home match against Sunbury. It will also be the Cobras first official hit-out under new coach Travis Hodgson, who replaced Cameron Richardson. Hodgson previously coached the Fitzroy Stars in the Northern Football League. In another coaching change at the club, AFL legend Doug Hawkins signed on in the off-season to lead the Cobras under 19 side. The 55-year-old has a rich history at Bacchus Marsh having previously coached junior and senior sides at the club. “It has been awesome to have Doug back at the club,” Sutherland said. “His under 18s are playing a very exciting brand of football. The way our guys moved the footy in their practice match at the weekend, it

was great to see. Our boys love their footy and they are keen to learn. It is great to have Doug at the club to teach them.” Meanwhile, from a junior perspective, Bacchus Marsh continues to have one of the most successful programs in the region. The Cobras had six players selected in the Western Jets squads for the 2016 season. Daniel Foley, Blake Graham, Samuel Griffiths and Nicholas Stuhldreier are in the official Jets TAC Cup squad, while James Dickson and James Vulic are in the under 16 squad. “We are really proud of those boys and what they have achieved,” Sutherland said. “The credit really needs to go to those boys, they train hard, they give themselves every opportunity. Bowlers in the Gisborne district are in for a tough time with one of Victorian sub district cricket’s best players on his way to the Gisborne and District Cricket League. Riddell has pulled off a huge recruiting coup in signing Michael Allen for the 2016-17 season. Allen won a VSDCA competition best-and-fairest award while playing for Melton, and is also a four-time premiership player at the Lions. Following the 2014-15 season, he moved to Oakleigh, winning a fifth premiership. On the back of this success, Allen said he felt it was the perfect time to make the move to the GDCA. As well as batting in the top order, Allen will handle the match-day captaincy role. The Bombers also need a new coach, with Heath Wadden stepping down.

Big takeoff, ugly landing By Liam Twomey The Western Jets went into last week’s bye having already experienced the highs and lows of TAC Cup football. In the first round, the Jets were sublime, shaking off injury concerns to produce a stunning come-from-behind win against the Oakleigh Chargers. Seven days later, the Jets were put to the sword by a hot Eastern Ranges outfit that booted 12 of its 16 goals in the second half. Jets coach Torin Baker said his side needed to close the gap between its best and its worst in order to compete week in, week out. “We were really pleased with our performance in round one,” he said. “We played exactly the style of football we wanted. “That was what was so disappointing about round two – our kicking and our ball use, it

just didn’t reach the same level. It was very disappointing, given the standard we had set the week before.” While it is only early in the season, the Jets have already had a number of players throwing themselves into the draft calculation spotlight. Key defender Brodie Romensky has been named among the club’s best players in both of the Jets’ matches. Also impressing Baker have been Cameron Rayner and Jordyn Cotter. “Brodie has been fantastic,” Baker said. “We are really pleased with the way he’s going. He has had a couple of jobs on key forwards, especially the first week. Then his ability to rebound for us has been excellent. “Cameron has had two really good games as a bottom-age player. That has been really pleasing, to see him working hard and getting the rewards.

“Jordyn Cotter is another one who’s in good form as well. He has had two really solid games. “We think there’s a fair bit of upside there with all those boys.” The Jets will have the chance to get back to winning ways this week when they take on the Sandringham Dragons. Across the next three weeks, they will be strengthened by a number of players expected to return from injury. The Jets are missing 10 players through injury, including the star trio of Judah Dundon, Brock McGregor and Oscar Junker. All three are in the preliminary squad for the Vic Metro side that will compete at the under-18 national championships. Five other Jets – Wilson Berry, Harry Bult, Jordan Robinson, Lachlan Fogarty and Daniel Venables – are in the training squad.

Diggers Rest Bulla Cricket Club has wasted no time re-signing coach Kevin Barker. The Burras announced last week that Barker will remain at the helm for the 2016-17 season. Diggers Rest enjoyed a brilliant season in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup, qualifying for the grand final. The Burras went on to tie with Gisborne, finishing runners-up based on ladder position after the home and away season. “The committee had no hesitation in reappointing Kev after an amazing season for the club, stepping up to the big time in McIntyre and rebuilding depth in the D and G grades,” a website comment stated.

Melton will take on local rival Keilor in the Big V basketball division 1 men’s competition this Saturday night. Coming into the season as defending champions, it has been a patchy start to the new campaign for Melton. The Thoroughbreds won their round one match before a break for Easter the following week. Melton then lost twice in round two before having another bye in round three. That has left Melton with a 1-2 record for the season. The match will be played at the Melton Basketball Centre with tip-off from 8pm.
