Cops in crisis EXCLUSIVE

By Sumeyya Ilanbey

It’s only a matter of time until a member is seriously injured or killed

’’

- Senior constable

(Scott McNaughton)

Melton police say it’s only a matter of time before an officer or member of the public is seriously injured or killed as the station grapples with an increasing and dangerous workload. Back-up can be at least 25 minutes away for officers dealing with violent and drug-affected criminals, while supervisors say they regularly have to put serious jobs on hold because they “simply have no units to attend”. Describing the situation as a crisis, Melton police have gone public with their plight for the first time, pleading with Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton to give them more officers and resources. “We’re never going to get the 100-odd police [Melton] apparently needs to keep up with the population, but we need more units on the road,” one officer said in an email to the Police Association obtained by Star Weekly. Meanwhile, another admitted he could not give the public the attention they deserved “because I don’t have the time”. In more than a dozen emails seen by Star Weekly, Melton officers raise issues about Weekly low police numbers, onerous workloads and over-worked officers, saying they’re “forced to take short-cuts, [jeopardising] everyone’s safety”. “All the sergeants in our office know that one day it’s going to blow up in our faces with the jobs we put on hold,” one wrote. “Someone will get killed and [the public] will be looking at us for answers. We try the best we can to get to the jobs and deal with them.” Police Association secretary Ron Iddles said there were 76 first-response officers in Melton, well below the state average. An additional 55 were needed to be on par with the average police-to-population ratio and a further 81 in order to keep up with the population growth. Mr Iddles said officers had reached out to the association in the past month because they were “at breaking point”. “You know you need to be concerned when you get calls from the police officer’s partner, pleading for us to help them,” he said. “Members and their families turn to us only as a last resort when others have stopped listening.” Mr Iddles said an “enormous growth corridor” and rising crime coupled with low police numbers created the “perfect storm” in

Melton. “Police officers are working harder, going to more tasks and working large amounts of overtime,” he said. “They are confronting increasingly dangerous situations with fewer people. “It’s only a matter of time before one of our members, or a member of the community, is endangered or injured as a result.” When Star Weekly asked Victoria Police if there were plans to recruit more officers to Melton and when deployment would begin, spokeswoman Danielle Fleeton said Victoria

Police would be working to determine where the additional 300 frontline police, recently announced by the state government, would be deployed. “The additional 300 police will be deployed to respond to local crime issues, such as drugs, high-volume crime and antisocial behaviour,” she said. “They will be a welcome addition to areas experiencing high population growth and high volumes of crime. We expect these police to start appearing in stations from early 2017.”

But Melton officers feel frustrated and helpless. “We are fighting an endless battle,” one wrote in his email. [It’s] a battle where we don’t have enough members, we don’t have enough vehicles, we don’t have enough computers to get our job done. How would the public feel knowing such a large organisation who are meant to be protecting them don’t have enough staff to do that?” ■ Report

Owner fights for companion ram Debra and Bruce Bullock told councillors they lived in fear Jackie Chan would attack if he escaped again. “No one should have to live like this,” Mrs Bullock said. Another neighbour said, “Enough is enough. It’s a dangerous animal.” There was shouting from the public gallery when the same neighbour said the ram “should be taken out the back and slaughtered”. Mr Aquilina and his neighbour, whose mutual intervention orders mean they can’t speak to one another, yelled at each other from opposite ends of the gallery while councillors called for order.

Jackie Chan the roaming ram may yet get a stay of execution if his owner’s plan to have him certified as an “assistance animal” comes to fruition. Moorabool council decided last week that the 10-year-old house-raised merino will be impounded in coming weeks and could face being killed if owner Godwin Aquilina doesn’t remove it from his Maddingley property. “I have an acquired brain injury and he’s my companion,” Mr Aquilina said. “He helps me with my everyday functions and I’m going to do what I can to keep him. They didn’t even want to hear what I had to say.

“He’s my ram and they weren’t going to let me speak, which I think is so unfair. Jackie Chan has been the subject of controversy between Love Close residents, his owner and council for the past three years after reports of the ram charging residents. Last week councillors voted not to renew a permit to allow Jackie Chan at the residential property after Mr Aquilina refused council officers access on April 21 to complete a site inspection that would have determined whether the ram could stay. Simmering tensions came to the surface when three neighbours fronted last Wednesday’s council meeting in Ballan in a final bid to get the ram removed.

Jarryd and his partner, Kyle Kraus, were also runners-up in the under-18 pairs. Mum Marianne said Jarryd’s friends and family were all behind him. “It’s been amazing,” she said. “We still can’t believe it. It’s quite a big achievement for someone so young and we’re very proud.” Mrs Davies says her son has been bowling for four years, plays at least four days a week and is obsessed with the sport. “None of our [immediate] family bowled before but now we all do,” she says. “My mother

took Jarryd to bowls one day then he came home and said he wanted to play lawn bowls. “Now once he’s on the green, you can’t get him home. I have to walk out of the club and yell, ‘The bus is leaving!’ ” Jarryd now has his sights set on the indoor under-18 title, an exclusive invitational tournament called the Golden Nugget, in July and a back-to-back under-18 state lawn bowls title next year.

Bungled medical treatment at a rural Victorian hospital may have led to the deaths of three newborns, the state coroner has found. The children’s care at the Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital was mishandled in near-identical ways and all three died soon after birth. Hospital management has admitted “the deaths of the babies might have been prevented”. Bacchus Marsh has been under fire since a cluster of stillborn and newborn deaths was discovered by Victoria’s Consultative Council of Obstetric and Paediatric Mortality and Morbidity in 2015. The coroner cannot investigate stillbirths, but she looked at the death of three infants who were under the care of the hospital’s maternity ward in 2013. Coroner Jacqui Hawkins found problems with the CTG scans in all three cases. The scans, which track a baby’s heartbeat, and uterine contractions during birth are a crucial way of assessing the health of mother and child. In two out of three cases, the hospital’s own internal investigation found no problems with the care. In a submission, Bacchus Marsh Hospital said it now believed that if medical care had been of an appropriate standard, the babies may not have died. The discovery of the stillborn cluster has prompted major reform at the hospital, including the sacking of the entire hospital board by the state government.

Smashing records on the green is just how Jarryd Davies rolls. The 13-year-old from Melton took out the under-18 singles title at the recent Bowls Victoria state championships at Clayton and is believed to be the youngest winner. Jarryd beat Bundoora RSL’s Riley Hodgson by one shot in a quarter-final which drew a big crowd to watch its thrilling climax. Question time put on notice By Esther Lauaki Moorabool council public question time has turned into a platform to take “free shots” at council staff, a councillor says. Moorabool council is considering whether public question time should be removed from meeting agendas through a proposed change to local laws. Under the proposed change, members of the public would no longer be able to address councillors at meetings unless the matter they wished to speak about was on the agenda. Members of the community who may wish to pose a question to the council would continue

to be able to consult directly with their ward councillor or contact council through social media messaging, the online request system, by phone or in person. Woodlands ward councillor Pat Toohey said public question time was no longer being used appropriately. “Public question time has lost respect for this chamber and it has lost respect for this council,” Cr Toohey said. “Some people are using it as a forum to disrespect this chamber, to take free shots at council officers and make accusations – sometimes without a question even attached to those comments.

“There are a number of ways to access council and ask questions of councillors directly … they are using public question time as a way to jump ahead of everybody else who is going through the correct council process. I can no longer support that.” Cr Tonia Dudzik suggested, as an alternative, that a form be submitted by residents wanting to speak at question time. “Having a form would enable councillors to consider the question before the meeting and be able to look into a possible answer,” she said. John Kowarsky was one of several people in the packed public gallery at last Wednesday night’s meeting who objected to the change.

“To be able to question the council is essential to democracy at a local level,” he said. “It means that issues can be presented and discussed out in the open. “Some people don’t have access to email or are uncomfortable with writing a submission. “Keeping public question time at meetings means that instead of only hearing about some things, the council can catch everything.” The proposed local law change is open for public submissions until June 7. Go to haveyoursaymoorabool.com.au to make a submission or drop it into a council office at Ballan, Darley or Bacchus Marsh.

When Kevin Antony joined the Melton fire brigade as a volunteer firefighter, he wasn’t planning on staying too long. But this year, the brigade’s 1st lieutenant has racked up more than 25 years’ service with the Country Fire Authority and has no plans to retire any time soon. Mr Antony says he moved to Melton in the late 1980s and was looking for a community group to get involved with. “I thought, how can I meet people and see what’s happening in town,” he says. “A couple of my friends suggested the CFA or local community groups … so I decided to go down to the fire brigade one day and we went from there.” Mr Antony is calling on young people to visit their local brigades, chat to the fireys and inquire about volunteering.

There’s no better way to give back to the community, he says. “Over time, I’ve made some great friendships, Mr Antony said. “Once I started to get involved I started seeing and finding a bit of spirit around the community.” While juggling volunteering with family and full-time work can be hard, Mr Antony says it’s well worthwhile. “One of the most rewarding parts is realising you’re doing something for the community and, more importantly, seeing a lot of younger people joining the CFA getting some skills and going on to become firefighters.” The Melton fire brigade will soon start the process of recruiting volunteer firefighters. COPS IN CRISIS â–

Councillors call for ratepayer support

â–

Urgent action required

‘Help us get more police’ By Sumeyya Ilanbey Melton councillors are urging ratepayers to “raise their voices and demand more police for Melton. Mayor Kathy Majdlik said she would continue to heavily advocate for the cause but recommended residents also start a grassroots campaign aimed at Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton. Her call to arms came as Cr Bob Turner raised concerns that police numbers were not keeping up with population growth. Cr Majdlik said campaigns were more successful when they had community support. “We will write to the chief commissioner as a council, but the cause is always strengthened when we have masses of people raising their voices behind us, she said. “It looks different coming from community groups. Cr Majdlik said that while police numbers and deployment were a Victoria Police and state government issue, the effect of low numbers was “detrimental to our community. “Although council can’t fund the police, we can certainly advocate for it, she said. “When we did in the past [for Caroline Springs police station], they increased the hours of operation. “We feel the numbers of police are paramount to our community for the perception of safety . . . and to keep crime stats lower. Coburn ward’s Cr Turner raised urgent business at last week’s council meeting, calling

A Senior Constable’s email to the Police Association In 2011, a normal night shift consisted of one sergeant, two watchhouse keepers and four members on response. Melton’s population has increased by more than 20 per cent since then (not including the ever-growing suburbs of Eynesbury, Rockbank, Burnside, Caroline Springs and Diggers Rest) yet we are still running with the same number of members on a nightshift. I’ve never seen morale so low. Members are overworked and constantly work overtime ‌ We complete correspondence in either our own time or on rest days or recreational leave. Members are stressed and fatigued, with more experienced members moving to greener pastures where the resourcing is better and they are given the support they need to do their job. In the past week alone, I have gained [a number of] briefs. It’s laughable to think that briefs are expected to be submitted within 14 days. I have never worked in an industry where we have to fight for resources in order to do our job – vehicles, computers and members! It’s only a matter of time until a member is seriously injured or killed because we’re dealing with violent, drug-affected people putting other people’s lives at risk without back-up; or, at best, back-up is 20 to 25 minutes away. Melton police station. (Shawn Smits)

for Melton council to write to Mr Ashton asking how many officers were deployed at Melton and to “seek his support for extra police numbers in what is a rapidly growing municipality. Councillors Lara Carli, Nola Dunn, Myles Bentley and Kathy Majdlik all voted in favour of the motion. Councillors Renata Cugliari and

Sophie Ramsey were absent. A letter is expected to be sent out soon. Speaking to Star Weekly, Cr Turner said he wanted this issue raised with Mr Ashton “as quickly as possible and for the council to advocate for extra resources. “My concern is our community is growing

so we need police numbers to keep up with the growth, Cr Turner said. “The challenge is that we’re not really getting the numbers to keep up with the growth. “It’s not that [Melton] is unsafe . . . but we need to know what numbers are meant to be in Melton and what numbers we’ve got. Is there

Police numbers fall behind population growth

Volume of work stresses out officers

A Sergeant’s email to the Police Association Our members are at crisis [point]. I have never, in my years of being a police officer, seen members do so much overtime. I have never seen so many members do corro [correspondence] in their own time. I have never seen so many members who are just drained. What is the incentive we can give to these guys? They go from van shift to watchhouse every day. There are no corro shifts. There is no help for them. Our members (especially the junior ones) are not able to advance themselves. We have tried to organise training days, but there are no numbers. We have tried to organise operations, but there are no numbers. They do the same thing day in, day out and their workload is relentless. In Melton we are so isolated. We are getting calls of hot burgs and thefts in the Toolern Vale, Diggers Rest area, but we are unable to attend.

A Constable’s email to the Police Association

a discrepancy? When you read in newspapers about low police numbers, you have to wonder.” Cr Turner also urged the community to put pressure on the chief commissioner. “We need the community support,” he said. “Just like the Melton railway line, unless the community also backs it up, there’s little we

can do by ourselves. With the growth we have here, we need increased numbers. And when we get the duplication of the railway line, our population is going to skyrocket. “[Police numbers] are never going to get ahead, but we need to keep up with population growth.”

The stress placed on us by lack of resourcing is making our job immensely harder than it already is. I work at Caroline Springs, which is a huge growth area. Our shifts typically see us travelling 20 kilometres down the Western Freeway to assist Melton units numerous times often for priority one jobs. This is horrifying for the Melton members who are dealing with some of the most abusive and violent drug users we, as a society, has ever seen! Fifteen minutes before back-up is even in the same suburb. Not only are we forced to deal with these offenders, but we are also struggling to console families who have been let down by the police, often not for the first time. We are drowning; we are exhausted; we are fighting a battle that we believed you would fight for us.

Leg lost in cruel trap

Search over gangland killing

By Sumeyya Ilanbey Moorabool council is investigating after a Bacchus Marsh cat was caught in an illegal steel trap and had one of its legs amputated. Sebby went missing from his owner Erin Armstrong’s Steele Court home on Tuesday, April 19. The two-year-old was found by a neighbour five days later in an alleyway close to home with a steel jaw trap clamped shut on his front left foot. Ms Armstrong told Star Weekly she was “mortifiedâ€? when council rangers called her to tell her Sebby, who was microchipped and registered, was at a Bacchus Marsh vet clinic in “not the best situationâ€?. “I was worried about the worst things happening to Sebby,â€? Ms Armstrong said. “One of the things my husband said was that he’s probably been baited‌ but we never thought it’d be a steel trap.â€? Ms Armstrong says that despite Sebby’s resilience, he no longer has the carefree nature he showed before the incident. “He’s had to learn a lot of things again, certainly jumping. He can’t jump off anything now without thinking about it; he’s really not too keen. Even being outside, he’ll be wary. He’s not the same cat he was before and, yeah, it totally makes me sad.â€? She’s urging the community to be vigilant, and says she’s “absolutely mortified someone thinks that’s an acceptable thing to doâ€?. “Like somebody on Facebook pointed out, a lot of people use that area. It could have been a child, a person could’ve stepped on that thing and caused this massive damage. Regardless of whether it’s for ferals or rabbiting, it’s cruel.â€? Moorabool council community safety officer Shannon Walsh said the steel trap was likely

clamped shut on Sebby’s foot for several days, crushing his bones. “Although there might be people out there who find cats a nuisance, the use of these barbaric traps is an act of animal cruelty and will not be tolerated in our community, Mr Walsh said.

Anyone with information is urged to contact council on 5366 7100. Steel traps, also known as leg-hold traps, are illegal under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. Anyone found guilty of setting up traps, or using them, could face fines of up to $36,800 or two years’ imprisonment.

The gun used to kill one of Melbourne’s most notorious underworld figures could have been discarded in a Myrniong reservoir, detectives have confirmed. Police search and rescue members and detectives began searching for evidence at a reservoir off Pykes Creek Road near Greendale-Myrniong Road, near Ballan, on Monday as part of the investigation into the 2003 killing of Graham Kinniburgh. Kinniburgh was shot dead in the driveway of his Kew home about 12.05am on December 13, 2003. Anakie man Stephen John Asling, 55, was charged last November with one count of murder. Police said information had been received that the gun used in the killing and other evidence may be located at the reservoir. Detective Inspector Andrew Gustke, of the Purana taskforce, said the case was the longest-running murder investigation ever conducted by Purana. “We owe it to the family and friends of the victim of any crime to investigate fully and to do our very best to bring justice for them, he said. Anyone with information on Mr Kinniburgh’s death should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au Esther Lauaki

Cap fits council budget By Sumeyya Ilanbey Melton councillors last week approved their 2016-17 draft budget, which they say is responsible, conservative and fair. More than $50 million has been set aside for infrastructure works, including $21.6 million on road works, $11.4 million on community buildings, and $5 million on bridge works. Rate increases will be capped at 2.5 per cent, with council expecting to bring in about $100 million from rates in the next financial year. Among the big-ticket items are $6.5 million for an ‘office space development’; $5.5 million

to upgrade Abey Road from Toolern Creek to Ferris Road; and $4.4 million for streetscape improvements in the city. The council has budgeted $2.4 million for a bridge at Westwood Drive over Kororoit Creek and $2.2 million for a bridge at Abey Road over Toolern Creek. About $3 million will be used to resurface and upgrade sealed roads and a further $1.46 million to fix footpaths. Council will spend about $1.7 million on a senior football and cricket pitch at Taylors Hill West; $900,000 for a playspace at Atherstone; $208,000 to upgrade tennis courts across the city; and $250,000 on design works for the

Caroline Springs sub-regional tennis centre. For the first time since being elected in 2012, Watts ward Cr Lara Carli voted in favour of the budget, commending council officers for delivering a “responsible” budget while capping rate increases at 2.5 per cent. “This is the first year that I’ve agreed with the council budget,” Cr Carli said. “I’m very pleased to say [rate increases] are 2.5 per cent. It’s a responsible budget and I look forward to what our residents have to say.” The budget is available for public comment until 5pm, May 31. The final budget will be adopted by June 27.

Balliang artist blossoms

For five decades, Balliang woman Barbara Press has found solace and comfort in painting. From oil to water painting, she loves it all. She says a mixed-medium flower painting (pictured) that she finished recently is probably up there in terms of her favourites. Press will be the artist-in-residence at the 46th Bacchus Marsh Rotary Art Show, talking about her paintings and offering tips. “It’s a really great art show and the standard is very high,” she says. The show’s opening is on Friday, June 10, from 7pm at the Bacchus Marsh Public Hall. The show will run 10am-5pm on Saturday and Sunday, June 11-12, and 10am-4pm on Monday, June 13. NEWS

Budget vote delay rejected Moorabool council says it is setting “a clear direction for the future” with the draft 2016-2017 budget, which it approved last week. The budget, which is open for public submissions, has earmarked more than $17 million to deliver major capital works, including $5.9 million on the southern extension of Halletts Way, a million-dollar upgrade of Bacchus Marsh Racecourse Reserve facilities, and $650,000 on Bacchus Marsh-Balliang road rehabilitation. The proposed budget was based on a rate rise of 3.5 per cent, one per cent above the state-imposed limit which council has applied for to the state government. At last Wednesday’s council meeting in Ballan, Cr Paul Tatchell moved a motion to defer consideration of the draft budget until approval of the 3.5 per cent rate rise was confirmed. “I think we need more time to consider and debate the document,” he said. The motion was lost, with other councillors reluctant to delay public consultation and risk missing a June 30 deadline to adopt the budget. Other big budget items include $10,000 for a community facilities booking system, a $45,000 review of Moorabool Leisure Services management, $55,000 on small towns strategy implementation, and $15,000 on fire hydrant maintenance. MY PLACE What’s your connection to Melton? I’ve lived here for 36 years. I moved here when there were 15,000 people on the population board and it’s grown a bit since then. I’ve had two children who’ve gone to school here. What are some of the biggest changes? The town’s growth, and the shopping centre is better now. Everything is very central so we don’t have to get in and out of the car to shop. What’s your favourite thing about Melton? It’s close to everything – to the city, the beach, the country. It’s central to everything.

Where’s your favourite place to hang out? I spend a bit of time at Woodgrove shopping centre and have a meal at the food court. How are you involved with the Partners of Veterans Association? My husband is a Vietnam veteran and that’s how I got involved 10 years ago. There was an advertisement in the paper about a DVD that was going to be screened and I was interested in seeing it. And I could relate to it very well.

What’s the most difficult part about being a partner of a veteran? The first thing was getting [my husband’s]

(Shawn Smits)

What would you change if you could? That’s a very good question. [Public] transport, for me, would be the main thing. I use a wheelchair to get around so I rely on my husband to take me everywhere because public transport’s not very easy. Definitely more trains and more regularly, not an hour in between.

post-traumatic stress disorder diagnosed. He said there was nothing (wrong) ; I said ‘yes, there is’. Eventually that was diagnosed. He’s now on medication and that’s made life a lot easier. The mood swings were difficult to live with and manage. I don’t think people understand; only partners of veterans do. A lot of people would ask me, ‘Why do you put up with that?’. But they don’t understand that underneath that is a real person and the [PTSD] is just part of what’s happened to them. You tend to do a bit more of your own thing so you can cope.

How important are support networks for partners of veterans? Very, because you can be open about it if you wish, you don’t have to. The general community doesn’t understand, but we do. So that’s why we’d like to have some of the younger partners from the Afghanistan war get involved. The Partners of Veterans Melton sub-branch meets on the third Monday of each month, from 1-3pm, at the Melton community hall. For more information, call 0447 515 666.

FOOD REVIEW

STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir joins the fever, desperately seeking the perfect pho A Vietnamese eatery for Yarraville? A dose of cynicism is warranted, I reckon. For starters, Asian food in Yarraville is a very mixed bag – some good, some lacklustre, some already forgotten. What chance of a really fabulous bowl of pho in downtown Yarraville, away from Footscray, Sunshine or St Albans – where numbers and competition ensure very high standards? In the case of Friend or Pho, the pun in the name is even based on a mispronunciation. But a good sign is the gorgeous, larger-thanlife, hand-written menu on the joint’s Facebook page – it’s all in Vietnamese. But even then, banh mi is listed at $9. Whoa! That’s twice the going rate in Footscray. Happily, things take a delightful turn, dispelling our scepticism as soon as we enter and broach the price of that banh mi. The answers we get run like this … “It’s just really good! We make our own pickles, and it’s got our own pork crackling!” Even better, we soon learn that the sisters behind Friend or Pho – Anna Nguten (out front) and Chelsea Le (in the kitchen) – are lifelong, born-and-bred Yarravillians. About 15 years ago their parents ran a bakery on Anderson Street (corner of Buninyong Street, where the fancy cake-makers now live). Friend or Pho is done out in very cool cafe style. There’s seating inside, in the hallway and outside on the verandah. The menu proper runs through a tight line-up of mostly familiar dishes.

FRIEND OR PHO Address: 3 Ballarat Street, Yarraville Phone: 9042 4431 So how do we go on our first visit? Oh, my – it’s difficult to contain my enthusiasm. This is simply great Vietnamese food, as good as any in the west and way better than most. The waiting times are appropriate for such great food and prices – banh mi aside – are in the regular ball park. Beef pho ($12) is wonderful – and about medium size when compared to Footscray places that do the small-medium-large routine. The broth is terrific and a bit salty (just as I like it). And there’s a lot of beef in that bowl – sliced but cooked through, and brisket. Com tam (pork chop with broken rice, $13) is similarly excellent. All the porky bits display in-house care and handiwork. The meat loaf is peppery perfection and the pork chop the most tender and beautifully cooked we have had with this dish. Go ran, of six fried chicken ribs, costs $9 and can be padded out with rice for $4 to make a more complete meal. As with everything else we try at Friend or Pho, the ribs are state-of-the-art: crisp, hot and delicious. For $13, a few slices of cucumber or segments of tomato would bring this dish more into line with its fellow menu items in terms of portion size and value. Vegetarian pho ($12) is unlike any dish you’ll get at Footscray’s sole dedicated Vietnamese

SPORT Goal glut swamps Melton in Big V clash Melton’s Big V basketball struggles continued on Saturday night with the Thoroughbreds losing a hard-fought game to Warrnambool at home. The Thoroughbreds went down by 21 points, slipping to 10th spot in division 1. After a slow start to the season, Melton looked to have been getting back to its best in recent weeks after two straight wins. The good form carried through to the early stages of the weekend’s road clash against Warrnambool with Melton going toe-to-toe with the home side through the first quarter. But things turned sour at the resumption of play with Warrnambool shooting the lights out from the floor. The Seahawks put up a whopping 34 points on the back of five three-pointers.

Facing a 14-point deficit at half-time, Melton failed to cut far enough into the margin when play resumed. After a tough third term, the Thoroughbreds could manage just 15 fourth-quarter points, allowing Warrnambool to run away with the 110-89 win. There was no stopping Warrnambool’s Nathan Sobey around the basket. He put up an incredible 40 points in 36 minutes of playing time, shooting at nearly 60 per cent from the field. Sobey was well supported by Xavier Johnson-Blount, who scored 30. For Melton, US import Ivan Harris fought hard to score 20 points and eight rebounds. Jeff Crowe and Blake Allison also worked hard,

scoring a combined 33 points. Saturday’s loss means Melton slips to a 3-5 record. Things aren’t about to get any easier for the Thoroughbreds, who take on second-placed Casey at Melton this week. In other Big V basketball results from the weekend, Melbourne University was too good for Keilor 86-78, while Chelsea defeated Sunbury 83-74. Liam Twomey

Cobras strike for Cupido By Liam Twomey Bacchus Marsh pulled off a major recruiting coup last week, signing former AFL player Damian Cupido for the rest of the 2016 season. And Cupido, who left his coaching role at Essendon District Football League club Airport West to join the Cobras, wasted no time fitting in at his new surroundings, booting 10 goals in a huge win against Melton South in Melton on Saturday. In his AFL career, Cupido played 13 games for Brisbane Lions and 40 for Essendon, kicking a total of 66 goals. The 34-year-old’s arrival is a huge boost for Bacchus Marsh, which is eyeing off a return to the Ballarat Football League finals this year. The Cobras have hit the ground running, putting themselves in the conversation for most improved team through the season’s early stages. After a first-round win against Sunbury, the Cobras claimed the huge scalp of reigning premier Darley a week later. Then the club dropped a game to East Point before its 24.12 (156)-4.10 (34) massacre of Melton South. Speaking before the latest match, Bacchus Marsh president Adam Sutherland said the club was encouraged by its start to the season. “We’re pretty satisfied,” he said. “We’ve probably played only one bad quarter for the year so far – the first quarter against East Point. “They were coming off a couple of tight losses and were just hungrier, cleaner and better than us in the first quarter. “We worked hard all day, but we were never likely to reel that back in. “We had one bad quarter. It’s disappointing, but I think we can accept it and move on.” Sutherland gave a lot of the credit for the club’s impressive start to the season to first-year coach Travis Hodgson. But the hard work is only just beginning for Bacchus Marsh, with two tough matches in the next fortnight. The Cobras take on Ballarat and Melton, both of whom are also hunting a top-six finish. A pair of wins would go a long way to getting the club into a finals berth. “We haven’t shied away from it . . . for us to improve we have to play finals,” Sutherland said. “The next few games are winnable, but we still need to go out there and do it. “Ballarat beat us in the second-last game of last year to deny us a finals spot and Melton is off to a strong start to this year. “We want to win, but we know that if we don’t bring that effort then they’ll be tough days.”

Sports shorts TAC Cup

A slow first half cost the Western Jets dearly in their TAC Cup clash against Geelong on Saturday. Western managed just two goals across the first two terms to fall 54 points behind at the main break. Despite a win being out of reach, the Jets fought on bravely in the second half, keen to eat into the margin. The Jets won both the third and fourth quarters to cut the eventual margin to 40 points. On what was a tough day for his side, Oscar Junker was a standout for the Jets and finished with one goal. The 16.16 (112)-11.6 (72) loss is Western’s fifth from six games this year.

RDFL

Diggers Rest produced a come-from-behind win in the Riddell District Football League at the weekend. The Burras trailed Broadford by seven points at three-quarter time before launching a spirited fight back. Diggers Rest shut Broadford down at the attacking end, allowing the Kangaroos to kick just two goals. The Burras then applied some serious scoreboard pressure, booting four goals of their own to seal the 11.13 (79)-10.8 (68) win. Brent Tuckey was impressive for the Burras, kicking three goals while around the ground, Stephen Ruane and Tom Evans were standouts.

WRFL

Four goals from Jase Perkins helped Deer Park secure a win against Werribee Districts in the Western Region Football League at the weekend. Meeting for the first time since last year’s grand final, the Lions were forced to fight for everything against a fired-up Werribee. Deer Park trailed by 26 points at half-time and looked to be in serious trouble having only had four scoring shots for the half. However, a much-improved second half launched the fight back. Perkins provided a strong target up forward while three goals from Brendan Fevola helped the cause. Having wrestled back the momentum, a seven goal to one final term sealed the 31-point win for the Lions, 14.5 (89) to 7.16 (58).

Former AFL player Damian Cupido made his debut at Bacchus Marsh at the weekend.

Bloods cut out the bad points By Liam Twomey Going into the Ballarat Football League season, Melton coach Brad Murphy knew he didn’t have a big key forward who would give him 80 goals. Instead, the Bloods were intent on having all hands on deck to kick a winning score. For Melton, that game plan starts at the last line of defence . . . from their first three games, for two wins and a loss, the Bloods have conceded an average of just 44 points. Murphy said defensive pressure right across the ground had been a key focus right throughout the pre-season. “We really wanted to make sure we kept our defensive structures sound,” he said. “We’ve played 12 quarters and I reckon 10 and a half have been good. “If all 12 had been good we would be 3-0 and on top of the ladder.” The lapse Murphy is referring to is a horror start against Sunbury, when the Bloods had to wait until the second half to secure their first goal. While Melton teams of the past may have struggled to come back, the Bloods were able to limit the damage, fighting to be in a winning position in the final term before a late charge from the Lions. Melton has won its other two games easily, smashing both arch-rival Melton South and Sebastopol. Murphy was full of praise for off-season recruit Jack Walker, who has fitted in brilliantly since joining from Williamstown.

“Jack is probably our fittest player,” Murphy said. “He has played in three VFL development premierships in the last three years. He played in the TAC Cup before that. “He has come from a high level over the past five years and he is very experienced and very professional with the way he conducts himself. “He averages around 30 possessions a game playing off half back and going through the middle. He’s another one who sets the standards at training and game day.” Melton can turn its positive start into a brilliant one this week if it can topple East Point. Murphy believes both clubs will be fighting for a finals spot come the business end of the season. “We’ve spoken about how important this game is and we’ll be pumped up,” he said. “Later on in the year this can really effect the ladder position. This is an eight-point game. “It is a massive game for us. They have some quality players in their side and we know we will have to be at our best.” The match will be played at Melton’s MacPherson Park on Saturday. The first bounce is at 2.15pm.
