$4.9m station delay Caroline Springs’ newly built train station is slated for a $4.9 million redesign before it is even open to the public. The state government recently ordered the redesign of the singleplatform station to accommodate the $518 million duplication of the Ballarat line to Melton. The station was meant to be operating later this year but that has now been pushed back to early next year. Public Transport Victoria’s acting chief executive, Jeroen Weimar, said the extension would ensure the station can handle an expected 1500 passengers a day. Patronage is estimated to grow to 4100 passengers daily by 2031. News of the delay has received mixed responses on a Caroline Springs residents’ Facebook page. “Talk about a waste of money … The builder must be loving it. Also did they think of improving the roads around that area before they built this station?” one post said. Another post called for commuters to be patient. “There’s a lot of angry people here,” it read. “You all should feel happy there’s a station going up. Wait a few extra months to make it bigger and better – big deal! Look at the suburbs that have been around for over 40 years and only recently got a station.” Mr Weimar said the Caroline Springs station is being “future-proofed” to prepare for duplication of the Ballarat line. The station’s redesign, provided for in the 2016-17 state budget, now includes

the centre island platform, upgraded buildings to allow for a staffed station and improved facilities for passengers including larger under-cover waiting areas and toilets. Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said doing the work now would reduce disruption in future.

“The population of Caroline Springs is just booming,” she said. “This has been a project that’s been planned for some time. It was first planned and funded for in 2009 but, disappointingly, four years were lost when it was later dropped. “We’ve got the project up and running again and we recognise that it needs a little extra work so that it not only caters for the commuters who need it now but also those that we know are coming in future years. “I think it’s a better outcome in the long term.” The redesigned Caroline Springs station is expected to be completed in early 2017. The V/Line service will stop at Deer Park, Ardeer, Sunshine and Footscray, and finally, at Southern Cross. PTV will introduce a new rail timetable, and consult with the community about introducing a better bus network for Caroline Springs to service more areas, more frequently, with better connections to train services.

Tennis club gives council a serve By Esther Lauaki Melton South Tennis Club says it’s courting disaster if Melton council doesn’t come through with promised new courts. The tennis club has 400 members and struggles to fit in all its competitions on its four courts. Club vice-president Danielle Borle said the council had promised that two new courts would be built by this year as part of the Melton South Recreation Reserve Master Plan, with an additional two to be built in future.

But the club says it was advised by the council last week that no new courts would be built just yet because there were eight available courts at an abandoned tennis club in Melton West. It’s not a suitable solution, according to Melton South Tennis Club. “We were very disappointed that Melton leisure services staff and councillors made a lot of promises but have failed to deliver,” Ms Borle said. “We have had only four [courts] since the club was built in the 1960s. All our competitions are running at capacity. We have been pushing

for new courts for a number of years but have [now] been offered some nearby courts to use for overflow. “We have a thriving club in a thriving growth area. Many of our juniors walk or ride to the club for training and competitions, and we’d lose that membership if we had to share.” Ms Borle said the Melton West club, which folded three years ago, had been neglected. “There are eight courts at west Melton that are almost derelict,” she said. “Four are in poor condition and four are unusable. Two of those courts are set to be redeveloped into

multi-purpose netball and tennis courts. But Melton council recreation and youth manager Adrian Burns said the club would not be sharing the Melton west courts permanently. “Many clubs across the municipality play sport across multiple venues,” he said. “Council has offered an option to Melton South Tennis Club to expand . . . to the Melton West tennis facility, not to vacate their home. “While additional tennis courts are planned for Melton South Tennis Club in the medium term, council is encouraging increased utilisation rates at existing facilities.”

Beef business sizzles at conference Ballan farmers Nick and Vicki Sher and their family have put in the hard yards to become one of the nation’s top beef producers. The Shers’ business, Sher Wagyu, based at their 280-hectare property, Glen Leckie, at Ballan, was featured at a presentation at the Australian Wagyu Association conference in the Hunter Valley this month. Among the family’s accolades is a gold medal in the ‘Paddock’ section of the 2015 national Delicious Produce awards. The Shers have weathered all the ups and downs of the industry since they started cattle breeding 25 years ago. “The biggest challenges we’ve faced have included the droughts through the 2000s, and the past 12 months have been very dry,” Mr Sher said. “When the Australian government banned live exports to Indonesia, the Indonesian government made it very hard for its importers to bring in boxed beef. “Similar issues have occurred with exports to Russia and whenever other countries change importing requirements with little notice.” Mr Sher said that in the early days, trade shows, food festivals, cooking demonstrations, television shows and presentations were an unexpected part of running a farming business. “All these efforts and events help to educate chefs and the public about wagyu, about our boutique brand and how we breed and care for our cattle and manage our farms sustainably,” Mr Sher said. Sustainability has become a key focus at Sher Wagyu with the farm using natural fertilisers, rotational grazing and solar power to run the office. Sher Wagyu is delivered to restaurants across Melbourne and regional Victoria and is exported to 14 countries, including Japan, the US, Hong Kong, Taiwan and China.

Woolly feud’s ram in a jam The future of infamous Maddingley ram Jackie Chan hangs in the balance. Moorabool council recently ordered that the 10-year-old merino be removed from its owner’s Love Close home. Jackie Chan has been the centre of a long-running dispute between neighbours after complaints he had attacked people and was dangerous. Owner Godwin Aquilina was given until midnight last Sunday to find a new home for Jackie Chan or face the risk the ram would be impounded by the council. However, on Monday the council said its officers wouldn’t impound Jackie Chan until Friday. Moorabool mayor Allan Comrie said the dispute had been “a saga”. “It’s been going on for years and the residents, his neighbours, are really suffering,” he said. “Rams are dangerous animals. They’re like bulls; they’ll butt anyone if they can.” While Mr Aquilina fears the ram will be destroyed, the mayor insists that Jackie Chan will not come to any harm. “We’ll find somewhere safe where [Mr Aquilina] can visit,” Cr Comrie said. Mr Aquilina and Jackie Chan made a trip into Melbourne last week in a lastditch effort to win sympathisers to their cause, gaining media coverage in The Age and on 3AW and Instagram. Mr Aquilina vowed to sleep on Melbourne’s streets with his sheep rather than give him up. He said he was still trying to have Jackie Chan registered as a “companion animal”. In a bid to save the ram, a Change. org online petition was launched last week. At the time of going to press, it had attracted 1500 signatures.

Bad year for swans, kangaroos By Alexandra Laskie Caroline Springs is headed for a record number of wildlife emergencies this year, according to one of Victoria’s biggest wildlife rescue organisations. Wildlife Victoria emergency response team leader James Johnson says the organisation has been contacted for about 64 animals in need of assistance in Caroline Springs this year so far. “We are probably on track for 2016 to be our busiest year for wildlife emergencies

in the suburb,” Mr Johnson said. Wildlife Victoria received 87 calls about injured wildlife in Caroline Springs last year, 81 in 2014 and 82 in 2013. Mr Johnson said an outbreak of avian botulism had contributed to the increase. “We continue to liaise with Melbourne Water on this matter and refer all reports back to them for monitoring.” In the past two years, the most common species in need of assistance in Caroline Springs was the black swan. Forty-five of the majestic birds were the

subject of reports to Mr Johnon’s emergency response team. Eastern grey kangaroos were the animals second-most-frequently attended to by Wildlife Victoria’s volunteers in the past two years. “Sadly, half of these had already been hit by cars and the other half were on the hop in suburbia and at risk of also becoming road victims,” Mr Johnson said. Last week, a kangaroo became trapped in St George Preca Primary School’s playground. The female kangaroo was carrying a joey in its pouch and became increasingly agitated

when it was unable to escape the Caroline Springs school’s grounds. The school called Melton council, which sent rangers to remove the kangaroo to an area they’re known to inhabit. Mr Johnson said the kangaroo was euthanased later that week, while the joey died in the course of his mother’s capture. “The volunteer carer looking after her made the difficult but humane decision to euthanase her as her condition was worsening,” he said. “It’s suspected the stress placed on the kangaroo during her ordeal may have contributed to this outcome.”

More than 200 Melton residents flew rainbow flags and stood in solidarity on the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia. And Melton council raised a rainbow flag, symbolising its commitment to “creating a prejudice-free world”. There were cultural dances from a Bhutanese group (pictured), and speeches from The Mourning After author Julie DeBondt-Barker and Rainbow Network Victoria co-ordinator Jami Jones. Melton council community planning manager Matt Wilson said: “Melton is a diverse community and the event is a way for council and community to come together in celebration.” The event was held on May 17, marking the day the World Health Organisation declassified homosexuality as a mental disorder in 1990. COPS IN CRISIS

Eight years on, still waiting EXCLUSIVE By Sumeyya Ilanbey Senior Victoria Police officials were warned almost a decade ago that more police would be needed to deal with Melton’s booming population. But police numbers have barely changed since a 2008 report by a Melton police project group which called for a drastic increase in police resources by 2017. The project group was headed by Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Cassidy, then based in Melton, who urged then chief commissioner Christine Nixon to allocate extra staff and resources through a “staged implementation” by 2017. “The current resources are not sufficient to provide an effective and efficient 24-hour police service to Melton’s community,” the report stated. “[An] increase in police resources is necessary to reduce likely increases in crime, family violence and road trauma and to provide an effective, efficient and fair police service to the Shire of Melton.” In 2008, Melton’s uniform branch had two senior sergeants, eight sergeants and 46 senior constables/constables. The project group asked for an extra four sergeants and 10 senior constables/constables. There is now one senior sergeant along with 10 sergeants and 43 senior constables/ constables, despite a 30 per cent population rise.

Mr Cassidy, who has since retired, said he found the current low police numbers “extremely disappointing”. “We were under-staffed at the time and I think it’s disgraceful it hasn’t increased in line with population growth,” he said. The 2008 report stated that youth resources officers had made a “marked impact on youth crime in Melton”, with a 2.44 per cent fall in young offenders in the year to June, 2007, despite a 25 per cent increase in young people living in the area. There were two senior constables managing the youth resources team, and the project group called for one sergeant and an extra senior constable to join it. Currently, there are no youth resources officers in Melton. When Star Weekly asked Victoria Police why these officers had been pulled from Melton, spokeswoman Danielle Fleeton said: “Youth resource officers are divisionally based and are currently located at the Caroline Springs police station. They service the entire Melton community.” Ms Fleeton denied Victoria Police had ignored the report’s recommendations. “We continually review our service delivery against community needs, population growth, crime trends and data.” She said that since 2008, a number of police units had been established, including a family violence unit in Caroline Springs, a vehicle crime and burglary team, and a crime desk in Melton.

VOX POP

Would you support calls for extra police in Melton?

Annemarie, 35, Hopetoun Park I thought there were a lot because every time I come I always see police. But I’ve heard about certain things that have happened in this area and about the safety concerns. Sometimes I’ll rush down to the shops at 11 o’clock at night and I always watch my back. I suppose I’m all for more police if needed. Luke, 25, works in Brookfield If they are needed around here, of course. It’s just peace of mind and people feel safer.

Katherine, 38, Melton Yes. Melton’s population has increased substantially in the past five or 10 years and the number of police officers currently working in the area has not increased with the population. The number of crimes here has increased and there’s a lot of concerned citizens, including myself. They’re just concerned for not only our safety but the safety of our children and the wellbeing of the community.

Liam, 18, Melton When you call the police they take about an hour to get there. At the end of the day, they’re going for little crime scenes but for the more serious ones – even if it’s domestic – they still take their time. Elvie, 98, Melton I don’t go out very much so I do feel safe. But it would be good to have more police officers. You hear things all the time about what’s happening.

Phillip, 59, Melton South Yes I would. I take my hat off to the police. If I see them, I always acknowledge them. I think they do a great job, but we need more of them. We need more police in the area. The City of Melton is getting bigger and bigger and we need more police.

Health chief ‘reassured’ David O’Connor and Frank Labombarda. (Joe Mastroianni)

Cups raised in caring When David O’Connor attended a Cancer Council event in 2013 it prompted him to visit his doctor for a check-up. Several months later, the Diggers Rest man was diagnosed with prostate cancer. “The talk and discussion about cancer is what made me go and get checked,” he said. “I had an aggressive form of cancer so if I hadn’t had that check-up, we wouldn’t be having this interview … I would’ve been in hospital trying to figure out how to survive.” Mr O’Connor had two prostate biopsies, an MRI, a bone scan and a radical prostatectomy. He’ll be hosting his second Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea event this Thursday at

Houdini’s Cafe in Diggers Rest. Cafe manager Frank Labombarda will be donating his time, cafe and food for what he describes as a “really good cause”. And like many people, the event is close to his heart. “I think we all know someone who has cancer – that’s a given,” he said. The morning tea will run from 10am-noon on Thursday, May 26, at the cafe, 52 Old Calder Highway, Diggers Rest. There will be raffles, auctions and door prizes. Tickets cost $20. Victoria’s chief medical officer, Andrew Wilson, has praised significant progress by Djerriwarrh Health Services in implementing changes to make its regional hospitals safer. Mr Wilson said his visit to Bacchus Marsh hospital last week was an important opportunity to see how the service had developed since an administrator replaced the sacked board last year. “I visited the hospital wards and heard from Djerriwarrh Health Services staff, who have obviously worked extremely hard to implement profound changes at the hospital,” he said. “My role is to develop ways to strengthen hospital management and systems to ensure doctors and nurses deliver high-quality care. I am reassured that Djerriwarrh has taken appropriate steps to do just that.”

Pollution hurts poor the most By Sumeyya Ilanbey Pollution is disproportionately concentrated in lower socio-economic areas, an inquiry into Victoria’s environment watchdog found. In its final report, an independent inquiry into the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) found that despite “significant improvements” to the authority in recent decades there were still concerns for communities in parts of metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria. The inquiry probed the EPA’s role, powers, governance and funding, making 48 recommendations to the state government, including changes to the landfill levy, employment of a chief environmental scientist and increasing the severity of sanctions. “Victoria has well-known examples of hazardous waste sites, freeways or other transport infrastructure disproportionately affecting poorer communities (or creating poorer communities as a result),” the report stated. “People in these communities regularly suffer the effects of air pollution, noise, injury risks and ugliness.” The report recommended a whole-ofgovernment commitment to improve, and influence, environmental justice outcomes. The report stated that while the EPA had a role, addressing environmental justice “goes well beyond the reach” of the watchdog. In his submission to the inquiry, western suburbs resident Robert Joy said that while environmental quality in Melbourne’s west

improved “dramatically” in recent decades, problems remained. “For much of its history, Melbourne’s western suburbs were effectively treated by governments and regulators as a sacrifice zone where a range of noxious industries could be located with little, if any, regard for the health and amenity of local residents,” Mr Joy’s submission stated.

‘‘

Melbourne’s western suburbs were … a sacrifice - Robert Joy zone

’’

The inquiry has made a number of recommendations to improve environmental justice outcomes, including a statewide environmental monitoring system; statewide reporting of health, environmental and liveability outcomes; the setting out of highlevel objectives and principles to support consistent decision-making across the public sector; and strengthening third party rights. In a statement, the state government said it would consider the report’s findings and provide a comprehensive response later this year. EPA chief executive Nial Finegan welcomed the release of the report and said: “Much has changed since EPA was created in 1971: technology, industry, the role of government, and the environment itself. EPA understands that the community has grown and changed, too, as have expectations of its environmental regulator.”

Rent a big call on low incomes By Sumeyya Ilanbey Despite Melton being a relatively affordable area for families on the minimum wage, there’s a real shortage of rental options for low-income households, according to a new report. An Anglicare Rental Affordability snapshot looked at rental listings on real estate websites and Gumtree over an April weekend. Of the 255 rental houses in Melton, 190 were deemed affordable for low-income families. But for a single person on an aged pension, there were only 34 options available in Melton. And for single people on Newstart or Youth Allowance, there were no affordable rental options. The report’s researcher and author, Laura David, said that even in outer metropolitan areas traditionally associated with higher affordability, options were limited. She said the study had found that across all local government areas, among disadvantaged groups, those with most access to rentals were working couples on the minimum wage. However, she said such families also encountered other costs such as childcare, petrol and school needs. Anglicare defines “affordable” as spending no more than 30 per cent of weekly income on rent. Ms David said the report highlighted the difficulties young people on welfare support faced when trying to access the private rental market, with many of them forced to spend

S

most of their income on rent. “If you’re spending more than 30 per cent a week – what you’re being left with to pay for bills, to live on, it becomes difficult,” she said. “Being able to have a secure and safe place to live is the foundation of wellbeing … without that you can’t be expected to achieve.”

‘‘

A secure and safe place to live is the foundation of - Laura David wellbeing

’’

Her report states: “The impacts of an impenetrable private rental market and ongoing housing insecurity are considerable.” Asked if changes to negative gearing would have an impact on disadvantaged people accessing the rental market, Ms David said: “It’s not my area of expertise but what is interesting is people talking about [prices] getting worse or getting better [in the future]. “At the moment, they can’t afford what’s here now. We need to talk about ways of making it better for these people now, which is more important.” The report made a number of recommendations, including raising the age eligibilty for state-funded out-of-home care from 18 to 21, increasing the Youth and Newstart allowances and greater investment in targeted social and public housing.

Boss sleeps rough A Ravenhall executive and former army reservist will call on his experience while sleeping rough next month to help raise money for those without permanent homes. Hi Voltage Karts chief executive Jamie Meizer will take part in St Vinnie’s CEO Sleepout in Melbourne on June 23. He will sleep under the stars with only a cardboard box, beanie and minimal clothing for comfort. Mr Meizer said he had spent “many nights in the cold with little to keep me warm” so he was prepared for a long night. “They were tough nights [as a reservist], but all I had to do was just get through the night or two and then I would be back to warm showers and a bed,” he said. “I can’t imagine how difficult it must be for someone living like this from night to night

while also dealing with the reasons that forced them there.” He said the sleepout was in line with his company’s core values of being socially responsible and supporting the community. “At Hi Voltage, we have a number of employees who were previously on the long-term unemployed list.” For customers who are keen to support the St Vinnie’s charity, Hi Voltage Karts is holding a raffle that will run until June 24. Every dollar raised through the raffle will go to providing crucial assistance to people experiencing homelessness. You can sponsor Jamie or donate at www. hivoltagekarts.com.au/ceo-sleepout-2016/. Hope for the homeless Providing a future of hope will be the main aim of a breakfast fundraiser for a Melton youth homeless centre this week. Hope Street Youth and Family Services will host the event at Tabcorp Park on Thursday to support the building of a new emergency accommodation centre for homeless young people. Hope Street provides residential accommodation for people aged 16 to 21 and young families, and offers help in strengthening their housing, employment, education, training, personal and social prospects. The stateMushrooms government increased funding Cup for crisis and emergency accommodation last month in response to recommendations

of the Royal Commission into Family Violence. Hope Street chief executive Donna Bennett said the funding acknowledged that young people who experience homelessness require tailored responses. “Hope Street has been working closely with various stakeholders in Melton to establish an emergency accommodation facility along with specialist wrap-around support services for over 220 young people experiencing homelessness,” she said. NEWS STARWEEKLY.COM.AU What were some of the biggest challenges you faced when you first arrived in Australia?

MY PLACE

The language barrier. I know American English and British English may have similar grammar rules, but some words are different – for example, garbage and rubbish. And when my family found out I came to Australia without their permission, they turned their back on me. So the first six months were a bit hard.

Ada Willesden juggles full-time uni and mentoring with caring for her two-year-old, her motherin-law and a foster child. She speaks with Sumeyya Ilanbey about life after moving to Melton

What’s your favourite thing about Melton? People are very friendly and very nice to me. Especially bus drivers and train conductors – they help you around and if they see I’m lost, they ask if I need help. I know many people complain about transportation or traffic or traffic lights, but in comparison to Peru this is very amazing. People respect each other on the roads and cars stop when they need to. What would you change about the area if you could?

(Shawn Smits)

People who are fixing the roads … they usually do it during the day, so it increases a lot of traffic and people are very annoyed. So if I could, I would make [construction workers] do their jobs at a time that isn’t very busy. Besides that, I’m pretty happy with Melton.

What’s your connection to Melton? I’ve been living here since the first day I arrived from Peru. I came to Australia in December, 2009, following an Australian guy, who is

now my husband. I’m now looking after my mother-in-law so we moved in with her. She was taking care of a person with a disability – his name is Antonio – and he’s just like a baby but aged 22.

I usually go to Woodgrove, to the food court, and I eat everything. Melbourne has so much things to do, to see and to eat. Today you can eat Indian food, tomorrow Thai food, the day after tomorrow Chinese. It’s very multicultural. And you don’t see people only speaking English in Melton – you see people speaking Chinese and Thai; so it’s not just an English-speaking place.

Melton City Council Community News

Mayor’s Message Cr Kathy Majdlik Council recently welcomed Senator, the Hon Scott Ryan, and Gayle Tierney MP, to celebrate the start of construction on stage two of the Melton Town Centre Redevelopment, and the Bridge Road Regional Playspace. Council are very grateful to have received $4.45 million from the Australian Government and $3.5 million from the State Government towards the Melton Town Centre Redevelopment. We also received $750,000 from the State Government to help build the Bridge Road Regional Playspace. Stage two of the Melton Town Centre Redevelopment will see improved pedestrian connections; upgrades to streetscapes; renovations to the amphitheatre; installation of new footpaths; trees; street furniture and lighting, as well as new decking at the Visitor Information Centre. ¼µ· ½« ¾¡· ¿ª¥¾ ¿·¡ ª¢¥¨ À¨¥Á §¥¤· © ¨¨ ¯·¥¦Â«· ¥ ÃÁ ¢¡ ¯ªÄÅ slides, swings and trampolines; custom monkey bars and carved stones within a water play area. It’s budget time once again and Council’s Proposed 2016/2017 Budget will be on public exhibition until Friday 31 May. Highlights include $21.6 million for roads (including Abey Road and Minns Road); $11.4 million for community facilities; $5.1 million on recreational works (including Taylors Hill West Reserve, Bridge Road Regional Playspace and planning for the Caroline Springs Stadium extension and Regional Tennis Centre); $4.9 million on bridge works (including builds in Westwood Drive and Abey Road); and $2.3 million for foot and shared paths. Residents are encouraged to have their say on the Proposed 2016/2017 Budget through written submissions. The Section 223 Committee meeting to consider these submissions will be held on Tuesday 7 June at 7pm in Council Chambers. For more information or to view the proposed budget, contact Council on 9747 7200, inspect a display copy at the Civic Centre, Melton Library and Learning Hub or Caroline Springs Library or visit www.melton.vic.gov.au I welcome comments and feedback, so please feel free to contact me 0412 584 058 or email kathy.majdlik@melton.vic.gov.au

Coburn Ward with Cr Myles Bentley It was very exciting to see the next phase of the Melton Township redevelopment start recently which will deliver upgrades to streetscape in Palmerston Street (between High and McKenzie Streets); renovation of the amphitheatre; installation of new footpaths; additional trees; street furniture and public lighting, as well as a new outdoor decking area at the Visitor Information Centre. We expect this phase to be completed mid-December 2016. Melton City Council received $4.45 million in funding from the Australian Government and $3.5 million in funding from the State Government under its Interface Growth Fund towards this project. We ask your patience regarding the closure of part of Palmerston Road and please note that businesses in this area as open as usual. Reasons to be proud in the City of Melton City of Melton residents have been given some big reasons to be proud in the last few weeks. Stage two of the Melton Town Centre Redevelopment project started with $4.5 million funding from the Australian Government and $3.5 million from the State Government under its Interface Growth Fund. Upgrades to the streetscape in Palmerston Street between High and McKenzie streets, renovation of the amphitheatre and installation of more trees, street furniture and public lighting will be completed by the end of this year. Work started on an innovative, regional play space designed with input from local children on land next to the Bridge Road Community Centre with $750,000 funding from the State Government’s Interface Growth Fund. The Bridge Road Regional Playspace promises to ¶· ¥ ¾«¥©¤¥«¾ ¯ª« ¯¥® ¨ · ¯«ª® ¢·¥« ¥¢¾ ¯¥« ¥¢¾ © ¨¨ ¯·¥¦Â«· ¥ ÃÁ ¢¡ ¯ªÄÅ ¨ ¾· Å © ¢¡ Å trampolines, monkey bars built under a bridge, carved stones embedded in a water play area, picnic and barbeque facilities. Works are due to be completed by October. The upgraded Resale Centre was opened next to the Melton Recycling Facility at 33 Ferris Road, Melton South. The Centre has had a $500,000 facelift, $200,000 of which was funded under the State Government’s Metropolitan Local Government Waste and Resource Recovery Fund, made possible by the Sustainability Fund. This ‘vision’ isn’t a heavenly visitation, but rather indicates you may have a not uncommon problem for older people – cataracts. You know, those eye critters we heard about when younger, but didn’t expect to experience ourselves. A visit to an optometrist for a regular eye check becomes more and more important as we age, especially when you think about being in charge of a car, which requires excellent vision to keep yourself and other drivers safe. Other cataract signs are headlights looking fuzzy, street signs becoming indistinct when facing oncoming traffic, and glare’s a bother. If the idea of having cataracts removed gives you the heebie-jeebies, don’t worry because today’s technology makes it straightforward – and, unlike cataract surgery, the alternative of driving with impaired vision could be fatal.

If you notice that driving from a brightly lit area into your shopping centre’s underground carpark is hard for your eyes to adjust to, or your central vision gets blurry, making road lines look crooked or warped, it may indicate this progressive eye disease. When it’s hard to spot pedestrians starting to cross the road, or cars overtaking on the side, it may mean glaucoma, which impairs side vision. If you find yourself wondering “Where did that pedestrian dressed in bright orange and purple polka dots spring from?” it’s time to book in for an eye test, pronto. Sometimes it’s just plain old tiredness affecting driving vision; other times it might be a diabetic response to low blood sugar levels, or even a sign of a minor stroke. It seems unfair that our eyes don’t age like a good wine – which is why we need to keep an eye on our eyes, so we have only good eyes on the road … for everyone’s sake. Now where’s that optometrist’s number?

Macular degeneration is another eye issue that can rear its head as we grow older.

Mould is a wake-up call

‘‘

Minor signs of damp indicate a far more serious - David Hallett problem

To rid your house of mould, use a household cleaner. Any sources of moisture, such as condensation, rising damp, leaking roofs and pipes, need to

(iStock)

If it looks strange and smells strange, then it probably is. If a room or enclosed space has a mouldy or musty smell and you can see dark staining on the walls or ceilings, it could be mould. Mould should not be taken lightly and can be a health hazard, triggering allergies, asthma and respiratory disorders, eye/nose/throat irritations and skin problems. Mould grows wherever it can find food and water, and can be caused by diverse factors, says David Hallett, Victorian state manager of Archicentre. “As food sources are abundant in buildings, mould growth generally indicates the presence of excess moisture, which may be due to leaking water pipes, flooding and condensation,” he said. Moulds are organisms that reproduce by releasing spores into the atmosphere, similar to mushrooms and other fungi. “Seventy per cent of mould problems are due to condensation coming from wet areas, like bathrooms and laundries, while 30 per cent come from rising damp, which may be evident in winter, but not always detectable in summer.” And mould isn’t only seen in old places. It’s also rearing its unwelcome head in newer abodes, where there’s a lack of adequate ventilation in washing and drying areas. “Even minor signs of damp indicate a far more serious problem, as rising damp can cause increased room humidity, encouraging vermin, such as cockroaches, silverfish and dust mites,” Mr Hallett says.

be repaired. Improving ventilation by opening windows can also help. “Repairing leaking plumbing or improving sub-floor ventilation can

help, but it’s wise to have a thorough assessment of the level of the rising damp and its damage to the building.” Source: www.archicentre.com.au

SPORT Melton’s good, bad and ugly Melton’s football clubs were able to take stock last week as the Riddell District and Ballarat football leagues paused for the interleague carnival. After navigating their way through a third of the season, the biggest tests for local sides wanting to establish themselves ahead of a finals campaign starts now. Liam Twomey takes a look at how each team is tracking and the road ahead. Diggers Rest (RDFL)

season, the true test is just beginning for Bacchus Marsh. The Cobras’ next three games are against Melton, Redan and North Ballarat, each of them locked inside the competition’s top six and gunning for a finals berth. Bacchus Marsh will need to win at least one of those games to maintain the club’s promising push to finals.

Position: First Record: 5-0

The story so far: Diggers Rest has been perfect in the RDFL season to date. The Burras sit on top of the ladder and have landed telling blows against potential finals opponents Rupertswood, Broadford and Riddell. While they have had no trouble kicking winning scores, it’s at the defensive end that the Burras have been most impressive. No team is yet to score even close to 100 points against Diggers Rest, with Broadford’s 68 the closest to date. Leading the charge onfield has been off-season recruit Taylor Hine. Fresh out of the AFL, Hine has been a standout of the competition, being named among his side’s best players in four of his five matches.

Melton (BFL) Position: Third Record: 4-1

The story so far: Another side looking to make amends after missing finals last year, Melton has been much steadier in its attack in the 2016 season. The Bloods’ only loss came at the hands of Sunbury in round two. After leaking some big scores last year, Melton has tightened its defence. The Bloods are yet to concede 10 goals this year. After missing a large part of last year due to injury, Jake Gleeson has been a star since returning and has been named Melton’s outright best player in four of his five matches.

The road ahead: Diggers Rest will have the perfect chance to maintain its winning start in coming weeks. The Burras will take on Melton Centrals, Woodend Hesket and Rockbank, all of them outside the top six.

Melton Centrals (RDFL)

The road ahead: Melton’s biggest test for the year arrives in the coming fortnight when the Bloods take on Bacchus Marsh and Redan, two of the competition’s in-form teams. A win in at least one of those matches will be a huge boost in the club’s pursuit of a finals berth.

Position: 10th Record: 1-4

The story so far: Match days don’t come much bigger than the Centrals’ opening game of 2016. Melton was hosting local rival Rockbank and the match was also the Centrals’ first at the club’s new Arnold Creek home base. Melton ensured the occasion would be one to remember, enjoying a huge win to get its season off to a hot start. Despite not winning since then, the Centrals have been far from disgraced. With a focus on getting games into young players, Melton tested likely finalists Wallan and Macedon in rounds two and three. Forward Matt Gilmore has been an early standout, kicking 14 goals in five games. The road ahead: The Centrals get a golden opportunity to add to their wins tally in two weeks when they take on competition struggler Romsey. Melton then turns its attention to knocking off Broadford, which also had a 1-4 start to the season. The Centrals will be tested in games against Diggers Rest and Rupertswood.

Darley (BFL)

Position: Eighth Record: 1-4 The story so far: In one of the biggest surprises to start the season, last year’s premier has struggled to match its outstanding form of 2015. The Devils’ only win came in their first hit-out of the year – against competition struggler Melton South. Losses to Bacchus Marsh, Sunbury, Lake Wendouree and Redan have placed Darley two games out of the top six. Taylor Hine has been a standout since signing with Diggers Rest in the off-season. (Shawn Smits)

Rockbank (RDFL) Position: 12th Record: 0-5

The story so far: It’s been a tough slog for Rockbank. The Rams had a big turnover of players in the off-season as they threw their support behind a youth policy. The club knew there would be some short-term pain before it completes its rebuilding. The road ahead: Things don’t look like getting any easier for Rockbank in coming weeks, with the Rams set to take on Sunbury Kangaroos, Riddell and table-topping Diggers Rest.

Bacchus Marsh (BFL) Position: Second Record: 4-1

The story so far: After missing the finals last year, Bacchus Marsh has demonstrated it may be the BFL’s most improved side. Under new coach Travis

The road ahead: Things aren’t about to get any easier with the Devils set to take on the fifth-placed North Ballarat City in their first match after the bye. However, a win against North Ballarat will go a long way to kick-starting the Devils’ season. Darley will then take on Ballarat, Sebastopol, Melton and East Point. The Devils will go into all those matches as favourites.

Melton South (BFL) Position: 11th Record: 0-5

Bacchus Marsh has been one of the form teams of the Ballarat Football League. (Damian Visentini)

Hodgson, the Cobras looked every bit like genuine finals contenders in round two when they knocked off defending champion Darley. The 12-goal win kick-started Bacchus Marsh’s season, with the Cobras smashing the likes of Melton South and Ballarat in recent weeks. While they already had a strong side, the

addition of Damian Cupido appears to have been a masterstroke. Cupido, recruited from Airport West, has kicked 20 goals in two games since signing with the club earlier this month. The road ahead: While it has enjoyed a brilliant start to the

The story so far: Melton South continues on its rebuilding phase as it looks to climb off the canvas in the BFL. There has been plenty of short-term pain this season as the young group struggles to match it with some of its more experienced rivals. The club’s best performance came in round three against Sebastopol: a 41-point loss. The road ahead: The Panthers get another crack at a win this week when they take on fellow battler East Point. Things will get considerably tougher from there in the form of clashes with North Ballarat and Lake Wendouree. 43 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 24, 2016

Melvin a runaway winner By Liam Twomey It’s easy to get the feeling Melvin Monleh deals only in gold. A rising star on the Australian athletics scene, Monleh is coming off a brilliant 12 months on the track. The 13-year-old, who arrived in Australia from Liberia eight years ago, dominated the sprint events at the Australian junior athletics championships in Perth in March. Competing in the under-15s, he won gold medals in both the 100 and 200 metres then anchored Victoria’s 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams to victory. Monleh’s coach, Steve Gaffney, said the performances were up there with the best of the young star’s career. “This year Melvin is much more into the Athletics Victoria and Athletics Australia junior pathways,” he said. “Before that, he was in Little Athletics competitions. These are fantastic results for him. He’s racing the best under-15 runners in the country and doing it quite easily.” Monleh began his career at Sunbury Little Athletics Centre. It didn’t take long for word of his natural ability to spread and he was offered a scholarship to the Maribyrnong Sports Academy. Monleh has been named as a monthly nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star Award. The award is run by Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly. Monleh will receive $1000 donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club and other prizes to assist in his future sporting goals. The Don Deeble award recognises young athletes in the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at a state and/or national level. Five goals from forward Brandon Coletta helped Hillside to a big win in division 1 of the Essendon District Football League on Saturday, the Sharks smashing the Northern Saints 23.18 (156)-9.9 (63). The win was set up by a blistering first term, when Hillside booted nine goals to the Saints’ one. As well as Coletta, Jordan Sinclair was another focal point up forward, kicking four goals. The victory moves Hillside to sixth on the ladder and also serves as a healthy percentage boost. In other round 9 results from the weekend, Tullamarine smashed Hadfield, Oak Park defeated Glenroy and Westmeadows was too good for Taylors Lakes.

A staggering 15 goals from veteran full forward Mathew Sutton helped Caroline Springs to a huge win in the Western Region Football League’s division 2 competition. The Lakers defeated Manor Lakes 42.13 (265)-7.1 (43). Sutton has now kicked 44 goals in six matches this season and Saturday was the third time he has booted more than 10 in a game. Also among the goals was Troy Manolis, who kicked seven, while Brian Lake booted four. The win maintains Caroline Springs’ place on top of the division 2 ladder. The Lakers have a bye this week. Hard-working RDFL tumbles to Alberton The Riddell District Football League was unable to see off a fast-finishing Alberton in the community football interleague championships on Saturday. After holding a two-point lead at three-quarter time, RDFL succumbed 14.13 (97) - 13.7 (85). It was the host Alberton that made the better start at Inverloch Recreation Reserve. Alberton booted six first-term goals to take a 14-point lead into the opening break. But the longer the match went, the more the RDFL side looked at home. Jonathon Kent was causing all sorts of trouble up forward for Riddell, while around the ground Brandon Kilty and Brent Swallow were proving a handful for Alberton. RDFL quickly reeled in the margin and took a two-point advantage into the main break.

RDFL coach Matt Power said his side turned things around by winning the clearances. “That’s what it was more than anything,” he said. “The boys were working really hard, bu we just couldn’t get that extra break. “We had some chances to go out to nine or 15 points up and we didn’t take them. Alberton was always thereabouts.” The sides traded shots on goal in the third term and it appeared the match was heading for a nail-biting finish. When the whips were cracking, though, it was the hosts that were able to come up trumps. Alberton put the clamps on the RDFL, conceding just two goals across the final 30 minutes. There were no such scoring troubles at the other end of the ground, with Alberton booting 4.4 in the final term to seal the two-goal win.

Kent worked hard on the RDFL forward line to finish with five goals. He received good support from Haydn Ross, who kicked three of his own. Also impressive for the RDFL were Matthew Burkett, Timothy Walsh and Kilty. The result had Alberton jumping to 26th place in the AFL Victoria community championship rankings. The RDFL slips to 29th and has a date with the Warrnambool Football League next year. Liam Twomey

Too little and too late for league side

Todd Finco and Jarryd Graham go hard at the ball in the community football interleague championships on Saturday. (Shawn Smits)

Late goal seals thriller By Liam Twomey A goal in the dying minutes to Western Region forward Andrew Panayi handed the Ballarat Football League an agonising three-point loss in the community football interleague championships on Saturday. In one of the closest matches of the championships, the WRFL came out on top, 13.17 (95) - 13.14 (92), at Footscray’s Whitten Oval in. Although the match finished as a classic, it appeared likely to be a blowout early in the second term. The WRFL skipped away to a 34-point lead on the back of four unanswered goals. Then the BFL launched a spirited fightback. Derick Micallef got the ball rolling with his first goal of the match before Mitchell Banner, Nathan Pring, Damian Cupido,

Daniel Tung and Jarryd Graham got in on the act, the BFL kicking six of the last seven goals in the half to trail by just two points at the main break. The momentum continued to swing when play resumed. It was the WRFL that drew first blood, kicking back-to-back goals to open up a 16-point advantage. But as they had done previously, the BFL players rallied with four unanswered goals to take the lead early in the final term. WRFL forward Daniel Castellano had been a headache for the Ballarat backline all day and he continued the punishment, the Sunshine spearhead booting two crucial goals, giving him four for the match and taking his team to a 10-point lead at midpoint of the last quarter. Micallef pegged one of the goals back

before Matthew Notman put the BFL in front with just minutes remaining. Then Panayi ensured the WRFL would have the last laugh, the talented Werribee Districts forward kicking the match-winning goal. Despite the loss, Nicholas Hind was a clear standout for the BFL and, with teammates Benjamin Sortino and Lane Buckwell, was named among the best players. For the WRFL, Matthew Dean and Murray Boyd were adjudged key players on the day. On the back of the win, the WRFL moves to sixth in the AFL Victoria community championship rankings. It will take on the Northern Football League in 2017. The BFL drops to ninth and has a date with Bendigo next year.

Riddell District Netball League was left to rue a disappointing first three quarters against Alberton Netball League on Saturday. The RDNL travelled to Inverloch for the interleague clash but didn’t fire a shot until the game was all but over. Alberton jumped out of the blocks and led at every break. And although the RDNL controlled the fourth quarter, Alberton won 45-35. RDNL coach Jarrad Walker said it just didn’t happen for his side on the day. “It was one of those days that everything that was 50-50 fell their way,” he said. “The ball would bounce off the post and into the court for them and off the post and out for us. It was one of those days. “We had to try to stem the flow of the game and it didn’t happen until the last quarter.” The RDNL team was slow out of the blocks and struggled to click as a team while Alberton was at its best early on. “Alberton, to their credit, were consistent almost to the end of the game,” Walker said. “They just played consistent, error-free netball. We were probably too flowing. “The first quarter killed us and took the wind out of us.” RDNL made changes at the defensive end which created more turnovers, but wasn’t able to convert at the other end of the court until late in the game. “We didn’t fire until the last quarter when it was about 16-4 our way,” Walker said. “The game was gone for us by the time we found our rhythm and we relaxed a bit more. “We will take heart from the last quarter.” Walker said Sara Febbo was best on court for the RDNL, while he was impressed with how Ellen Close performed coming onto the court in the second half. Close was a late inclusion to the side, after fellow shooter Hope Evans withdrew from the team because of injury. “That’s the best I’ve seen Sara play,” Walker said. “She’s come on leaps and bounds this season.” Meanwhile, the RDNL under-17 side lost 27-21 against Alberton.
