Michael Garang has witnessed the crippling effects of conflict. Having fled South Sudan as the Darfur war broke out in 2003, the Burnside man is determined to dedicate his life to a peacekeeping role. Mr Garang was eight when he left South Sudan with relatives before travelling to Cairo by boat and train. He lived in Egypt for four years, arriving in Australia on a humanitarian visa in 2007. He now lives with his grandmother and is studying for an advanced diploma of legal practice, hoping he can make it into the police academy. “I don’t like seeing people fighting and I want to stop them,” Mr Garang says. “If I become a police officer, I can calm the situation down and have back-up if I need to do something.” Western Chances has awarded Mr Garang a scholarship, which he’s used to purchase a laptop. “I didn’t have a laptop before,” he says. “I would have to go to the library to do my school assessments. It’s going to make life much easier.” Western Chances provides scholarships to young people in Melbourne’s west to give them the chance to overcome barriers to success. It will be launching a new program on July 21. Details: www.westernchances.org.au Sumeyya Ilanbey
Enviro fears halt pit plan By Sumeyya Ilanbey Melton councillors have rejected plans for a 100-square-metre, eight-metre-deep pit at a Plumpton rock-crushing plant, acknowledging concerns about detrimental effects on a nearby tourism precinct. North Altona Rock Blasting company applied for a permit to Melton council, proposing to create the pit and relocate crushing equipment to its Plumpton Road recycling centre. There were 10 objections to the permit, citing dust and noise concerns, alleged noncompliance with existing permit conditions, a lack of water, increased traffic, reduced
property values and inadequate public notification. At last week’s council meeting, officers recommended a permit be issued, subject to 32 conditions which included submitting a dust suppression and assessment plan, a stormwater management plan, field assessment for the presence of the striped legless lizard, and sealing an internal access road. But Watts ward councillor Lara Carli moved an alternative motion refusing a permit because the proposal would “intensify” and “entrench” existing uses in an inappropriate area, and would detrimentally affect the nearby Leakes Road tourism precinct.
Cr Carli said the proposed pit would also “exacerbate” dust and noise and be a nuisance to nearby residents. Councillors Myles Bentley, Nola Dunn, Renata Cugliari, Bob Turner and Kathy Majdlik voted in favour of the alternative motion. Cr Sophie Ramsey was absent. In their report, council officers stated North Altona Rock Blasting’s proposal was able to be accommodated on the subject land, that there were no plans to expand the company’s current operations and no native vegetation would be removed as a result of the new pit. The report also stated that officers visited the site twice and were confident the company was

complying with its current permit conditions. Star Weekly contacted North Altona Rock Blasting last week, but a spokeswoman said the company would not comment further. At a meeting earlier this year, about 20 people met with council officers and councillors to air their concerns about the company’s proposal. Residents complained about the dust and noise they say emanate from the site. “I’ve got a six-month pregnant daughter breathing in the dust every day,” one person said. “Cement dust sits on everything … it’s destroyed the facade of my building. This [new proposal] is only going to make it worse.”

Volunteers ‘left out in the cold’ “Whilst I understand councils are concerned about rate-capping, I still believe volunteering is a key part of community development,” Mr Phillips said. “This is going to impact further down the line.” He expects many people once likely to volunteer will now “be left out in the cold”. “If we can give people a good experience volunteering, they’ll continue to volunteer even when they start working,” Mr Phillips said. Volunteering Victoria chief executive Sue Noble said Volunteer West’s services in growth areas are vital, and not just for connecting people who are disadvantaged into community. “Organisations like Volunteer West have a

A volunteers network has been forced to quit Melton and Caroline Springs after failing to find funding for a second year running. Volunteer West will shut its doors at the end of this month, despite making repeated requests to Melton council to back its service. The organisation’s chief executive says the council’s decision will have flow-on effects in hundreds of local groups relying on volunteers. Ken Phillips said newly arrived migrants, asylum seekers, people with disabilities and long-term unemployed have relied on Volunteer West to connect them to local volunteering
opportunities in community agencies and local support services. “Communities as a whole wouldn’t survive without volunteers – the entire fabric [of society] would grind to a halt,” Mr Phillips said. “It’s a loss of service.” Volunteer West has been running in Melton for the past two years and Caroline Springs for the past 12 months. Mr Phillips said the non-profit organisation received $10,000 from council in 2014, half of which was used to pay for a meeting room at Melton library. The group has been unsuccessful in its grant applications to the council twice since last year, despite a 37 per cent increase in inquiries.

Incumbent Labor MP Catherine King is set for her sixth term in the seat of Ballarat, while Brendan O’Connor will serve his fourth for Gorton following Saturday’s federal election. After a tight race in Ballarat, Ms King was returned with a positive swing of 1.8 per cent. Ms King, whose main election platform was health, said jobs and education were also of great concern to Ballarat voters. “I think there’s absolutely no doubt that the damage done over the course of the past two-and-a-half years nationally in health has been one of the biggest issues here in this district,” she said. “I think people have seen it first-hand and they understand that.” Ms King held Ballarat for 15 years, but for the decade before that it was a Liberal seat. Former Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell, the National Party’s first candidate in 30 years, hoped to shake up the race for Ballarat, but his campaign failed to fire. “Five weeks ago we set out to make some noise for the region,” he posted to supporters on Facebook after Saturday’s count. “We had a small team of extraordinary people entering an unwinnable contest. We went with ‘what you see is what you get’; we simply tried to highlight the difference between idealism and realism; in the end, idealism was the clear winner.” Mr O’Connor won Gorton for Labor with 63 per cent on the first-preference count and 70 per cent of the two-party-preferred count. very important role in building connections between different parts of their community,” Ms Noble said. “What is incredibly disappointing, I think, is that the council doesn’t recognise that an investment in Volunteer West, and the work they do, is an investment in the community. “It’s a relatively small investment in an organisation that has a tremendous flow-on benefit throughout the community.” Melton council community services general manager Maurie Heaney said council has referred about 30 people to Volunteer West in the past 18 months. “It is disappointing that Volunteer West has made the decision to cease its services.”

Measle fears
There could be a potential spread of measles infection in Melbourne’s western suburbs, the health department has warned. Three cases of measles in Victoria have been confirmed in the past week, and while the department said there was no direct connection between the three, investigations suggested there could be a potential spread of infection in Geelong, the Surf Coast, and Melbourne’s west and north-west suburbs. The three victims were aged between 18 and 30, became infected in early to mid-June and none had recently travelled overseas.

‘Drought-proof foodbowl’ By Sumeyya Ilanbey One of Melbourne’s food bowls could be under threat from urban sprawl and climate change, according to a new report. Moorabool has the capacity to meet 60 per cent of Melbourne’s food needs, but report author Rachel Carey says she’s concerned agricultural land in outer suburbs will be lost to population growth. Dr Carey said Bacchus Marsh supplied most of Melbourne’s apples, berries, stone fruits, broccoli and lettuce. “There’s an incremental sprawl into areas like Moorabool and Bacchus Marsh and we’ve got a growing population,” Dr Carey said. “Then we’re looking at an additional food demand of 60 per cent more food … but urban sprawl is reducing the area of land.” Dr Carey is a research fellow on the Foodprint Melbourne project, which is funded by the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation. She said commercial or housing development on high-quality farmland should be stopped with the area instead preserved for growing food. And while Moorabool council had protected the area from urban expansion by maintaining its agricultural zoning in its planning scheme, Dr Carey said there were bigger problems that needed to be addressed. “Protection of farms and secure sources of water on the city’s fringes is going to be very important,” she said. “We’re moving into a context where we’re more likely to have more impacts from climate change and population growth affecting water availability. “It’s really important we retain areas so that we’re able to create a drought-proof foodbowl.” According to the report, Melbourne’s foodprint – what does it take to feed a city? city?, almost 500 litres of water per capita is used

every day to produce Melbourne’s food; almost one million tonnes of food is wasted every year by the city; about four million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions are emitted every year in producing Melbourne’s food; and 2.5 million tonnes of food is lost from wastage. “More water is likely to be needed to grow each person’s food as a result of land
degradation and the impacts of climate change,” the report states. “Due to land degradation, more land is likely to be required to produce the same amount of food. The findings of this research indicate that consumption of animal protein … accounts for a significant proportion of the environmental footprint of feeding Melbourne.”
Ratepayers ‘warned’ Ratepayers should brace for larger rates bills than they anticipate, the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) says. Moorabool council was granted permission by the Essential Services Commission’s to increase rates by 3.5 per cent – higher than the state’s 2.5 percent rate-rise cap – effective from July 1. Individual ratepayers will be impacted differently because their properties have been revalued. MAV president Bill McArthur said rate-rise capping policy had not been adequately explained to ratepayers. Some charges and levies were excluded from the cap and would be imposed separately. “The government’s ‘fair go’ rates have led many community members to believe their rates notice will not be more than 2.5 per cent higher than it was last year,” Mr McArthur said. “However, 2016 is a property revaluation year and all Victorian properties were revalued as at 1 January. Rates paid by individuals will depend on their new property valuation relative to other properties within their municipality. “Some ratepayers will pay less than the 2.5 per cent cap and others will pay significantly more, but the overall rates collected by a council won’t exceed the rate cap, unless they were granted an exemption from the cap.” Esther Lauaki

Bacchus Marsh returned service men and women will be among those remembering thousands of soldiers killed and wounded in one of Australia’s deadliest conflicts. A commemoration service will be held at Bacchus Marsh RSL on July 16 to mark the centenary of the Battle of Fromelles. The World War I battle, intended to draw German troops away from the Somme offensive, was the first major conflict fought by Australian troops on the Western Front.
Troops of the 5th Australian and 61st British divisions attacked on July 19, 1916, suffering heavily at the hands of German machinegunners. More than 5000 Australian and 1500 British soldiers died in just 24 hours, while the German casualties were little more than 1000. The service will start at 11am and a light lunch will be provided. Melton rides rates rollercoaster By Sumeyya Ilanbey Rates bills in Melton’s eastern corridor could climb by as much as 12 per cent this year after new property valuations. Despite rate increases being capped at 2.5 per cent, some rate bills will rise by significantly more than that, while others will fall by as much as six per cent because of a change in property values. Rates are calculated as a percentage of those values. Taylors Hill will be the hardest hit (12 per cent increase) as the revaluation in January this year revealed a 21 per cent jump in property
prices, followed by Rockbank and Hillside (nine per cent) and Burnside (seven per cent). Melton council expects to take in about $80 million in general rate revenue, $7 million in municipal charges, $12 million in annual service charges and $2.5 million in supplementary rates. The council last week approved its 2016-17 budget, which allocates more than $50 million for infrastructure works, including $21.6 million on roadworks, $11.4 million on public buildings and $5 million on bridges. During consultation on the budget, the council pledged two new tennis courts for
Melton South Recreation Reserve in the 2019-20 budget. It will set aside $30,000 in this year’s budget to renovate the Melton Equestrian Park, and $15,000 will go towards security upgrades at Blackwood Drive Reserve. Among the big-ticket items in this year’s budget, $6.5 million will be used to develop more office space, $5.5 million to upgrade Abey Road from Toolern Creek to Ferris Road and $4.4 million to improve streetscapes. The council has allocated $2.4 million for a bridge at Westwood Drive over Kororoit Creek and $2.2 million for a bridge at Abey Road over Toolern Creek. About $3 million has been
allocated for resurfacing and upgrading sealed roads, and a further $1.46 million for footpaths. Melton mayor Kathy Majdlik described the budget as “fair and visionary”. “I would like to commend my fellow councillors, council officers and the community for their input into the 2016-17 budget,” Cr Majdlik said. “I believe it … shows council’s commitment in delivering high-quality service and infrastructure. I thank everyone who’s been involved in the development of the budget and look forward to delivering it to our community over the next 12 months.”

The Keilor East woman will be fundraising for the Pyjama Foundation, where she’s a ‘Pyjama Angel’, visiting and mentoring foster children. Ms Bennetts visits a Melton foster family once a week, playing educational games and doing “girly things”. “As soon as I get there, the children run up to me and they’re so happy to see me,” she says. “Socially, they’re far more advanced from when I first met them. They enjoy having a friend come and see them to play games and do fun things.” She started volunteering about three months ago and says she “absolutely loves” the family she works with.
“It’s so fulfilling to walk into a home and just, basically, be mobbed by a group of kids who are so happy you’re there,” Ms Bennetts says. “I’ve always been interested in helping people, and working with underprivileged kids is something that’s quite dear to me.” She will join thousands of people around Australia when she hosts a Pyjama Day fundraiser to help pay for educational resources and raise awareness about children in foster care. Baby deaths a state problem Inadequate medical care, hospital delays and poor resuscitation procedures are contributing to hundreds of infant deaths in Victorian hospitals, disturbing new data shows. A state government report reveals 281 deaths between 2008 and 2013 in Victorian hospitals involved “contributing factors, including inadequate clinical monitoring, misinterpretation of tests and delayed caesarean procedures, in results that mirror the baby death scandal at Bacchus Marsh Hospital. Other factors included insufficient care during pregnancy, inadequate management of specific conditions, and “resuscitation factors. A small proportion of the deaths were also considered to involve “family neglect or ignorance, such as parents not attending medical appointments, but exact numbers in that category were not disclosed. Professor Jeremy Oats, an obstetrician and chairman of the state government committee that produced the report, Victoria’s Mothers, Babies and Children 2012 and 2013, said that although the contributing factors were concerning, they did not necessarily cause the deaths. He said the committee concluded that about one in 10 deaths (about 28 over the six years) involved “significant preventable factors on a par with those found responsible for the 11 avoidable deaths at Bacchus Marsh Hospital between 2000 and 2014. The report does not disclose in which hospitals the estimated 28 deaths occurred.
The 281 deaths in the report include stillbirths (from 20 weeks’ gestation) and infants who died within 28 days of birth. They also include nine of the 11 preventable deaths at Djerriwarrh Health Service in Bacchus Marsh. Professor Oats said “significant clusters of deaths at other hospitals were not found, but he acknowledged some services had results that warranted investigation.
‘‘
Many of these deaths could have and should have - Kathryn Booth been avoided
’’
Kathryn Booth, national head of medical law at Maurice Blackburn Lawyers, said the data was “very alarming and suggested Bacchus Marsh “was far from the only hospital in Victoria that was struggling to provide adequate care. “Many of these deaths could have and should have been avoided, she said. “Similar issues were identified among the catastrophic failures at Bacchus Marsh Hospital that resulted in multiple babies dying or sustaining lifelong injuries. Professor Oats said parents of the 281 babies were very likely to have been told of the problems in their baby’s care as part of the open disclosure process in Victorian hospitals, which encourages transparency about medical errors and adverse events. – The Age

Time for a crafty tardis? Teresa McLeod is combining her love of crafting and comics to start a pop culture store. The Melton West woman describes her Docklands-based Heroes and Villains Showcase store as a mix of craft, games and comics. “I wanted to create an experience, she said. “My husband had a business that sold licensed T-shirts, and I’d travelled to America a couple of times to have a look at what the trend was. “All we were doing was discounting – there’s no real value in discounting. America was basing everything on an experience.
Ms McLeod said she wanted to appeal to a broader market and encourage young adults to take up quilting and crafting. “If we ask those under-35, ‘Do you want to learn how to quilt?’, they don’t want to, she said. “But if you ask them if they would like to learn how to make a Doctor Who quilt, everyone says yes. Ms McLeod will showcase her quirky crafts at the Craft and Quilt Fair at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre from July 28-31. This means there will be more opportunities for individuals to access quality programs and services, now and well into the future‌ and that’s something we can all celebrate and be proud of.
So, when one of our local volunteers is recognised nationally for their efforts in ensuring we live in a community where reaching out and giving generously giving your time is highly Â‘Â¤Â“Â”Â—ÂĽÂŚÂœÂ™Â–ÂœÂ˘Â“Â“ÂšÂœÂ›Â—ÂœÂ§Â™Â–Â&#x;ÂœÂ¤ÂœÂ˜Â—Â¤Â“ÂœÂšÂ—Â•ÂšÂ—ÂœÂ’ÂžÂœÂ¨Â˜Â™ÂĽÂ—ÂŠÂœ This was the case recently when our very own Marg Behen was inducted onto the Victorian Disability Lifetime Achievement Honour Roll in acknowledgement for her 25 years of

COPS IN CRISIS
Sunshine staff ‘no Melton fix’ By Sumeyya Ilanbey Victoria’s police union has scoffed at suggestions custody officers in Sunshine will reduce the “massive burden” faced by “overworked” frontline police in Melton. Responding to a Melton council request for details of local police numbers and support for extra police in the area, Acting Inspector Peter Langdon, of Melton police, said: “We are putting in place plans to ensure that we are well resourced to serve the community.” Asked by Star Weekly about those plans and resourcing in Melton, Victoria Police spokeswoman Danielle Fleeton said Sunshine police had been assigned 12 custody officers in recent months. “And we will be receiving more in the future,” Ms Fleeton said. “These [police custody officers] will assist police in managing people in custody, ultimately allowing them to spend more time in the Brimbank and Melton communities, focusing on crime prevention and public safety.” But Police Association assistant secretary Bruce McKenzie said only more police officers at Melton would make a “genuine” difference to the “resourcing crisis” at Melton. “The Police Association rejects the notion that the recruitment of police custody officers
in Sunshine would somehow reduce the massive burden already felt by our over-worked frontline police at Melton,” Inspector McKenzie said. “While the extra custody officers may have the effect of freeing up some officers at Sunshine [who are also thin on the ground], it is difficult to see this having the same effect at Melton, which is in a different local government area.” Inspector McKenzie said custody officers were not the “panacea” to bolstering frontline police to keep up with the west’s booming population. Acting Inspector Langdon last week responded to a letter from Melton council that asked for details of police numbers in Melton. The letter also sought Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton’s support for the provision of extra police “in what is a rapidly growing municipality”. Acting Inspector Langdon “acknowledged” the community faced challenges as a result of population growth and said he recognised the municipality was growing. But he stopped short of explaining how many police officers were deployed to Melton. He ended his letter by reassuring Melton council that Victoria Police was aware of the challenges being faced by the municipality.
Nikki Isergin and mum Dianne Withoos display some of the donated items.
(Joe Mastroianni)
Donors of compassion Nikki Isergin’s Hillside lounge room looks like the toiletries aisle of a supermarket. Over the past few weeks, Ms Isergin and her mother, Dianne Withoos, have received thousands of donations of tampons, sanitary pads, waterproof handbags, deodorant, toothpaste and other necessities, which they will donate to the Melbourne Period Project, a charity that provides sanitary products for homeless women. Ms Isergin said that on a recent trip to the city they were struck by the number of women sleeping rough on the streets. So they decided to act. On June 19, the mother and daughter decided they would use their Facebook accounts to ask
friends and family to join them in their bid to assist Melbourne’s homeless women. “We started that Sunday and it’s just gone viral,” she said. “We’ve received thousands upon thousands of donations. It’s overwhelming.” Last week, mother and daughter donated 60 “care packages” to homeless services in Brimbank and another 20 to a crisis support centre in St Kilda. Ms Isergin said more donations were needed urgently and they would set up a drop-off point at Watergardens shopping centre on Sunday, July 24. Doubled reward raises hopes The mother of slain Buninyong woman Belinda Williams is desperate for information about her daughter’s unsolved murder. “Someone knows something,” Shirley Macey said recently on the 17th anniversary of her daughter’s disappearance from her Buninyong home. “Belinda’s murderer is still out there … there is someone who knows who it is. “After 17 years, still no one has been arrested for her murder. “I just think, hopefully, today might be the day that her killer gets caught.
“As a mother, you never get over the loss of a child.” And Mrs Macey hopes the doubling of the reward for information – from $500,000 to $1 million – will be enough to encourage someone to come forward. She is frustrated by the lack of information about her daughter’s murder and says she’s in constant contact with investigating police. The murder of 36-year-old Belinda in her Elizabeth Street home shocked Ballarat, particularly the fact her young daughter
was in the house at the time. At 9.30pm on June 25, 1999, Ms Williams said goodnight to two girlfriends before she cuddled up in bed with her six-year-old daughter and read her fairytales before she went to sleep. It was the last time anyone remembers seeing Ms Williams alive. Police believe she was killed in her home as her young daughter slept. Ms Williams’ body was found by bushwalkers on the Mount Buninyong access road on July 6, almost two weeks after she was last seen.
Mrs Macey described her daughter as outgoing and full of fun. “She was loving and very creative at cooking and fashion,” she said. ‘‘She was such a big part of my life and now she’s gone.” Anyone with information about Ms Williams’ murder or other unsolved cases can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a confidential report at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au – Ballarat Courier
Mini-forest on the way Volunteers are needed to roll up their sleeves, pull on gumboots and plant 3000 trees near Melton. The 11th annual Grow West event will build on decades of revegetation and indigenous flora and fauna protection efforts along the Werribee River at Exford, south of Melton. Grow West co-ordinator Helena Lindorff says this year’s event on July 15 will be funded through Greening the West’s one-million trees program, and will take place at Western Water’s recycled water plant, part of 694 hectares of riverfront at Exford. The site is also home to two land parcels of environmental significance – the Pinkerton Forest, which is supported by the Pinkerton Landcare and Environment Group [PLEG], and the Werribee River volcanic gorge. “We’re very excited to be working with Western Water, PLEG and Melbourne Water,” Ms Lindorff said.
“It’s a unique site with wonderful views of the Werribee river and its escarpments.” Revegetation and protection plantings have already occurred along about two kilometres of the river, with ongoing works to reinforce new habitat corridors that connect Pinkerton Forest and nearby Bush’s Paddock, Ms Lindorff said. The community planting session starts at 9.30am. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. Places are limited, so register online at www. ppwcma.vic.gov.au by 5pm on July 10. Pop in, invites new health hub By Esther Lauaki Fridays are set to become the healthiest day of the week when a new pop-up service and health hub gets going at Melton South. Drug and alcohol counselling, eye and ear specialists, and disability and charity support will be among services offered at Melton South Community Centre every Friday from July 15. The pop-up hub is another arm to the Linking Melton South project, instigated by Djerriwarrh Health Services to develop
a connected community that’s capable of responding to local aspirations and needs. The project uses a model called “assets-based community development” that changes focus from what Melton South lacks to focusing on strengths and resources in the community. Djerriwarrh Health Services chief executive Andrew Freeman said the pop-up health idea was created to help residents get better access to services and support. “Linking Melton South is all about listening and responding to the needs of the community, streamlining access to vital support services
for local residents,” Mr Freeman said. “The pop-up services hub is a great example of what can be achieved when service organisations work together to create more integrated and connected options for local communities.” The hub will offer community health services, eye and hearing services, alcohol and drug counselling, disability and charity support, and multicultural community programs. Service partners include the Melton South Community Centre, Djerriwarrh Health Services, NorthPoint Food Pantry,
Melton council, Australian Multicultural Community Services Inc, Vision Australia, SCOPE, Australian Hearing, Salvation Army and Stepping Up. A barbecue will be held at the community centre on the last Friday of every month to encourage people to come and meet the health workers of the area. The Pop-up Services Hub, at 41 Exford Road, Melton South, opens every Friday of the school term, 9.30am until noon. For more information, go to the Facebook page at facebook.com/linkingmeltonsouth
Critters prove a holiday hit Youngsters kicked off the school holidays by walking a little on the wild side in Bacchus Marsh. Scaly, feathered and furry creatures delighted children at Village Bacchus Marsh last week as part of the shopping centre’s holiday program. Centre manager Inger Coate said the program was a huge success. “We’re so thrilled with the response – it’s been beyond our expectations,” she said. “This has also given us lots of ideas for the September school holidays, so watch this space.” Meanwhile, kids can enter a colouring competition to win tickets to Werribee Open Range Zoo. Entry forms are available at centre stores. Entries close on July 10. Esther Lauaki

Warlpiri man Damien Loizou recently gave a talk at the Bacchus Marsh library about issues confronting Aboriginal people. He speaks with Sumeyya Ilanbey about the achievements of Aboriginal people and the importance of NAIDOC Week.
What does NAIDOC Week mean to you? NAIDOC is an opportunity for all the community to appreciate that for a population of only 500,000 people worldwide, Aboriginal Australians have produced a Wimbledon champion, world boxing titleholders, the recipient of a US presidential citation, a TV anchor on CNN and an inductee into the international rugby hall of fame. No other human beings travelled as far south as Aboriginal people did. Aboriginal people were the first to develop maps and make bread. Our medicinal understanding of native plants influenced the development of penicillin. We were only considered citizens of our country of origin in 1967. I have mentioned just a snippet of information – we have a lot to be recognised for and be proud of.
(Kristian Scott)
How important are NAIDOC Week celebrations to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people?
What’s your connection to Melton? I moved to Melton from the Northern Territory almost six years ago now. Interestingly, it wasn’t until I met other local Aboriginal community members here in Melton that I discovered family connections with Aboriginal family groups in Victoria.
I have an arm’s length list of coincidences with connections with the people I have met in Melton – strange to outright bizarre.
with all the modern utilities and easy commuting and access. The big difference is it’s not in the tropics and Darwin doesn’t have a metropolis down the road.
What’s your favourite thing about living in Melton?
What would you change about the area if you could?
It reminds me of Darwin where I was born,
Absolutely nothing.
YOUR NEW HOME IS NOW WITHIN EASIER REACH
Without a doubt, NAIDOC is the single most important calendar event for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It’s an opportunity to remember and to be recognised as a very special group of Australians who have survived and have witnessed the very best and worst of what the mother country has provided us. Do you think Australia has come a long way in recognising the first peoples and their rights? I think in terms of the number of people who now identify as Aboriginal, yes.

domain.com.au
Water leaks and any ensuing damage cause major maintenance issues for apartment buyers and owners, and can cost thousands of dollars to repair. Builders and architects say faulty workmanship and poor design are the main reasons for water leaks in apartments and high-rise residential buildings. As industrial areas are converted and apartment living takes off in central cities, suburban satellites are also boosting medium density developments, and water leaks are becoming a number one maintenance issue for owners. Older buildings are usually the main problem – statistics show that during pre-purchase inspections between 2010 and 2015 across Australia, four per cent of residences were found to have major water problems, and 34 per cent had minor problems. Experts say there only needs to be one leak caused by a poor sealing job, a broken tile or a blocked drain, to cause substantial damage to an apartment, or the ones next door. With more than three million Australians now living in apartments, the maintenance of both old and new apartment buildings needs regular monitoring. Water damage can not only be a very expensive fault to repair, it has the potential to make an apartment uninhabitable. Water damage can cause structural materials to rot, compromising the integrity of walls and even foundations. And if water enters electrical fittings, the safety of a whole building may be compromised. Don’t forget, dampness and mould have major health impacts. www.archicentre.com.au

FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir takes on a noodle house with roast beasties BBQ Noodle House shares a food-providing strip next to Featherstone shopping centre, which has a fish ‘n’ chip shop, charcoal chicken place and pizza joint. It looks like a typical suburban noodle shop – the kind where you’ll get very average noodles and dodgy takeaway. But there’s more of interest here ‌ Chinese roast meats can be bought in Sunshine but only, so far as I’m aware, at a Hampshire Road supermarket – not in a sit-down, house-roasted restaurant setting. There are several such places in Footscray and at least one good one in St Albans. But on the bay side of the Westgate Freeway/ Princes Highway? Nope. None at all. The first thing of note about BBQ Noodle House is the line-up of typical roast beasties – and bits of beasties – hanging up in usual fashion in the window. The second thing we note, equally approvingly, is the big, tubby roasting oven in the kitchen. Yes! Our mixed roast platter ($12) is just fine, with meat juices sluicing over the rice and overcooked but lovely bok choy on the side. The barbecue pork and roast duck are tender, juicy and tasty – though, predictably, the duck meat near the bone is something of a challenge. A bowl of chicken broth is brought to us upon request and without extra charge.
BBQ NOODLE HOUSE Address: Shop 14, 238 Boardwalk Boulevard, Point Cook Phone: 8375 2356 It’s hot and delicious. Pork and Chinese cabbage dumplings ($11.50) are winners, too. Whatever the cabbage component, it has been subsumed into the pork mixture, but no matter. The dumplings are quite heavy, and even a bit stodgy – in a good way. But they taste fabulous and we dig the strands of pickled vegetables that are on hand. Even the vegetable spring rolls ($4) come up trumps. They’re well fried and the innards are dark with chopped fungi.

SPORT Thousand-game umpire to keep on keeping score Turning up every Saturday to stand between the goals, Graeme Carter doesn’t take too much notice of the number of games in which he has officiated. For him, it’s the friendship and camaraderie that comes with being a goal umpire that has him returning every year. On Saturday, Carter umpired his 1000th game as part of the Riddell Umpires group that officiates in both the Riddell District and Ballarat football leagues. Carter, 69, is now the fifth official to have umpired 1000 games for the Riddell Umpires.
He began goal umpiring in 1987. “I normally do two games a week,” he said before his milestone game between Melton Centrals and Lancefield at the weekend. “One of my mates, Brian Pizaro, is an umpire and he suggested I come down. He’s umpired more than 900 games himself. I love doing it for the teamwork and camaraderie. It’s something I really enjoy.” On top of his 1000 games as a goal umpire, he has blown the whistle in more than 150 games as a field umpire. Carter says his preference of the two
officiating roles is goal umpiring. “I started in the EDFL [Essendon District Football League] and umpired 160-odd games there,” he says. There have been many memorable games in his time as an umpire, but one under-18 match stands out. “There was an under-18 grand final and it was a draw. The following week the result was a one-point margin.” The Sunbury resident says the game has changed a lot since he started. “We train every week and go through
Burras dig in at home By Tara Murray Diggers Rest has stamped itself as the team to beat in this year’s Riddell District Football League season after a big win against Macedon on Saturday. It was a top-of-the-table clash at Bloomdale Oval for the at-home Burras against Macedon, and it was the undefeated home side that controlled most of the game. The Burras found plenty of the ball early on but couldn’t convert. Then, having found the middle of the goals, the Burras kicked away from the Cats for a 13.17 (95)-6.14 (50) win. After only just getting the job done the week before against Wallan, Burras’ coach Shaun Sims was more pleased with Saturday’s showing. “We addressed a few things during the week and, for most of the game, our performance was really strong,” Sims said. “We’re blessed to have some really good players [who] stood up at different times. “Most of the day, we were putting ourselves in a good position. “We gave away some stupid free kicks and gave them three or four goals which I’m not rapt about, but to get away with a 40-point win, and to play well, is pleasing.” Sims said the club was focused on ensuring the players were not just concerned with results but enjoying themselves on the field and as a group. He said, overall, the club was as close as it had been in his time there. The club’s reserves side is also undefeated after beating the Cats in its top-of-the-table clash. “Footy is fun and that’s the important thing,” Sims said. “We want to do the right things most of the time, which we’re doing, “We’re not judging ourselves on just wins. We’ve been quite disappointed with some of our performances and happy with others.” Jamie Lobb was named best-on-ground for a second straight week, while Luke Smailes kicked four goals in Saturday’s win. Cats midfielder Casey Summerfield was the game’s standout player. One positive for the undermanned Cats was the return of Daniel Markworth. Markworth played junior football at the club and was playing his first game back after an injury-riddled stint with AFL club St Kilda. The result puts the Burras two games clear of Riddell and the Cats. They play Sunbury Kangaroos this week. Sims said Andrew Tyquin, Michael Kilty, Brent Tuckey and Patrick Jackson would all return to the senior side in the next few weeks. Elsewhere, Wallan snuck home against Romsey, Rupertswood smashed WoodendHesket, Lancefield defeated Melton Centrals, Broadford had a 290-point win over Rockbank, and Riddell was too good for Sunbury Kangaroos.
all the procedures and game situations on Wednesdays. “The way the players play the game has changed a lot. It’s more professional now.” Having reached the magical 1000th game milestone, Carter believes he has a lot left to give to the game. “I’ll keep going as long as they want me,” he says. “The friendships and the teamwork you develop is why I do it. You just help each other out.” Tara Murray

Melton fell just short of causing a major upset against Lake Wendouree in the Ballarat Football League on Saturday. The undefeated Lakers went into the match favourites and at half-time looked to have the game in control. The Bloods then turned a 26-point deficit into a one-point lead at three-quarter time before running out of wind to lose 10.19 (79)-12.3 (75). Bacchus Marsh and Darley had good wins against Sebastopol and East Point, while Melton South lost to Ballarat.
EDFL
Hillside claimed a vital win against Oak Park at the weekend. After trailing at quarter-time, the Sharks hit the lead in the second quarter then extended it to win 17.9 (111)-11.9 (75). It means the Sharks overtake Oak Park and move back into the top four. Keilor Park returned to the winners’ list in division 2, thrashing Burnside Heights. The Devils won 22.17 (149) 3.8 (26).
WRFL
Caroline Springs returned to the winners’ list in Western Region Football League’s division 2, defeating Albanvale on Saturday. A 34-1 first quarter set up the win: 24.14 (158) - 6.3 (39). Matthew Sutton kicked four goals for the Lakers, with Stefan Caterino named best on ground. The Lakers retain third place on the ladder.
CHFL
Springbank won a thriller against Gordon in the Central Highlands Football League. Both sides entered the match with a 9-1 record, and the action lived up to expectations. Gordon started strongly, but Springbank hit back in the second half, eventually winning 10.12 (72)-9.11 (65). Three teams, Springbank, Buninyong and Hepburn, are now equal on top, while three sides sit a game behind.
Netball
It was another tough weekend for Melton, Melton South, Bacchus Marsh and Darley in the Ballarat Netball League. Filling the bottom four spots on the ladder, all four teams suffered losses at the weekend, to Lake Wendoureee, Ballarat, Sebastopol and East Point respectively. Football in Venables’ veins By Lance Jenkinson Western Jets prodigy Daniel Venables comes from impressive football bloodlines. Johnny Lewis, his great grandfather, was a former North Melbourne captain-coach, 10-times Victorian representative, club best-and-fairest and twice leading goalkicker. Fred Robinson, his grandfather, played for North Melbourne and came third in a VFA JJ Liston Trophy count with Brunswick. Peter Venables, his father, moved over from South Australia as a youngster and made it onto the Collingwood under-19 list. And while Daniel Venables is proud of his forefathers, he’s hellbent on making his own way in the game. The 17-year-old from Taylors Lakes left an almighty impression on Vic Metro at last month’s under-18 national championships . Not only did he walk away a champion after the Big V went through the tournament undefeated, but he collected All Australian honours for a consistent carnival. “I’m just happy that we ended up winning the carnival,” Venables told Star Weekly. “I think we played four games in 17 days, with a trip to Adelaide as well, so it was pretty hectic and full on, but it was an awesome experience. Venables made an impact in every game for Vic Metro. Even when he didn’t rack up a stack of possessions, he found a way to provide meaningful contributions. “I just did the team thing,” he said. “I take pride in not losing a contested ball and just going in hard, not backing down.

“If you’re not going to have your best game possession-wise, you can always impact the game by being physical, being around the ball and putting pressure on.” The best moment for Venables came in game one. With Vic Metro trailing Vic Country by a kick, the ball was rushed into the forward line where Venables was there to mark. “A lot of people dream when they’re young of kicking a winning goal, and I just felt relaxed, kicked through it and luckily it went through,” he said. It went down to the last game before Vic Metro clinched the title. Metro had to beat WA at Simonds Stadium for the cup and, as with its previous three matches, it was a closely fought game. “None of the games were easy,” Venables said, “but we knew that if we played our best footy we’d always have the legs to run home with it, and we showed that in all four games.” Venables will return to the Jets and his school team PEGS a better player for this experience. “I’ll take a lot of confidence out of representing Vic Metro and being all-Australian,” Venables said. “It’s a pretty proud achievement and something you can hang your hat on.” But in the TAC Cup on Sunday, Western Jets missed their chance to jump into the top eight, losing a close contest to North Ballarat Rebels by 10 points at Stawell. Fitter Centrals keep racking up the points, and players Melton Centrals’ improved fitness and expanded player base is behind the side’s unbeaten start to the Victorian Women’s Football League north-west season. Last year’s runners-up are clearly the team to beat this season, having scored almost 470 points more than the next-best side. Centrals coach Janelle Martin says the team is keen to atone for falling at the final hurdle last season. “Fitness is definitely better this year; it’s something we’ve worked on,” she said. “Last season we played well but were only playing for three quarters; this year we’re playing well for four and we hope we can play in a winning side this time.” Centrals is one club that’s benefiting from the rapid growth in women’s football. The team, which has been around since the early 2000s, has more numbers than ever.
Martin, who took the 2015 season off to have a baby, set the team up in the early 2000s because she was sick of travelling to play. “It’s been a long time coming,” she said. “We’ve always struggled with numbers whereas this year we’ve got 25 players; we’ve never had so many. The introduction of the AFL women’s league is having an influence.” Another bonus for the club is again having a youth girls side. “We had a team many years ago before women’s footy took off,” Martin said. “There are now so many girls wanting to play. We have about 20 and they train with us. “They like joining us as [women’s football] is a bit quicker and they learn faster.” Martin said Centrals were also picking up players from all sporting backgrounds who want to play.
“We’ve got softballers from Sunbury and there are a few rugby girls playing. “The rugby girls play rugby on a Saturday and footy on a Sunday. That’s dedication.” On Saturday, Centrals continued their winning run with a massive 29.21 (195)-0.0 (0) victory over bottom-of-the-table Glen Orden. Jaime Nankiville kicked 12 goals in a best-on-ground performance. Alice Masters chipped in with four, while Nicole Undy and Tara Crisp kicked three each. Tara Murray It’s been a successful season so far for Melton Centrals, including Tara McKean. (Shawn Smits)
Burras grit wins the day By Tara Murray The Diggers Rest players knew they needed a win against one of the top sides in the Riddell District Netball League. Sitting outside the top six on percentage and with a tough three-week run ahead, the Burras’ finals hopes were at stake. Facing third-placed Macedon on Saturday in the first of those three matches, the Burras delivered with a hard-fought 49-46 win. Playing-coach Amy Carroll confirmed it was the result they needed. “I said to the girls before the game that winning could give us a little edge and put us into the top six,” she said. “We have to win these games. The girls know that and I’m glad we started with a win. I know we’re good enough to be there.” After an even first quarter, the Burras stepped it up in the second. With both sides having fill-ins playing, it was the Burras who were finding the right mix. “I was happy with how we looked coming down the court,” Carroll said. “The first quarter and a half was probably the best we’ve played all season. “I think they looked a little unsure. Credit to our defenders who were right on top of it.” Not surprisingly, the Cats hit back in third quarter to take control of the game, hitting the front heading into the final term. There were two defining moments in the third quarter. Firstly, 16-year-old Brooklyn Anderson went down with an ankle injury, leaving the Cats with only one recognised shooter. Defender Sarah Davies had to play out the game in attack. Then, as the Cats were making a run, Diggers Rest’s Vivien Leong was sent from the court for three minutes for too many off-sides. Early in the last quarter, the Cats extended their lead to five goals before the injury to Anderson started to have an impact. The Burras defenders capitalised on the confusion at the Cats’ attacking end and started to create turnovers to regain the lead. Despite Jayde Peters being sent from the court also for too many offsides, the Burras maintained their composure to hold on for the win. Carroll was the dominant shooter with 34 goals. Her partnership with fill-in Meredith Ball proved to be the difference in the second half. “She has a family and business, but I’ll try and get her to play as many games as possible,” the coach said of Ball. “The girls loved having her. We’ve got an old connection that works well together.” Melton Centrals, Rupertswood, Riddell and Romsey were the other winners.
Melton home in lacklustre game Melton Thoroughbreds took the points in a seesawing match against Melbourne University in division 1 of Big V basketball on Saturday night. But neither side would have been happy with their performance as both had major lapses in concentration at some stage in the game. The Thoroughbreds started the better, opening up a 14-point lead by the first break, but that was reduced to seven by half-time. The Thoroughbreds switched back on in the third term to race 24 points ahead before another lapse allowed the Black Angels to cut the final margin to 83-76. Thoroughbreds coach Julie McCallum lamented that the game lacked energy and atmosphere. “It wasn’t the best game. “The youth league men’s game went to double overtime and we won and the atmosphere there was great. “I don’t know if that took the wind out of everyone as our game was really flat; there wasn’t a lot of energy in the stadium or from either side.” McCallum said she wasn’t sure what happened in the last quarter when the Thoroughbreds went to sleep. “Maybe the players left when the fans left at three-quarter time,” she said. “Melbourne University fought it out and credit to them for staying in the game. We were always in control but we have to learn to play for four quarters.” McCallum said they would concentrate on shooting practice after a below-par performance and would also work on zone offence. The Thoroughbreds had four players hit double figures, while another four shot at least eight. Melton travels to Shepparton this week for a match it must win as the sides are equal on points. “It’s a crucial game and if we can win we go ahead of them and win the head-to-head match-up,” McCallum said. “The goal is to make top four and winning this will help with that.” The youth league side’s overtime win puts a gap between it and Western Port in the fight for the top six in division 2. The Thoroughbreds came from 10 points behind at the last change to force overtime. Scores were still level after an extra five minutes before the Thoroughbreds shot away to win 97-92.
