Rally call on home invasions A spate of violent home invasions across the western suburbs has left local families living in fear. A group of six teenagers is believed to be responsible for six aggravated burglaries in as many days. In one incident, males armed with hammers forced their way into a Hillside home where a woman was sleeping with her eight-month-old baby. A group of residents demanding more police to turn the tide of violence at Caroline Springs and Melton say they will rally outside Caroline Springs police station next month. “It’s the fastest-growing area in Melbourne and [the state government] can’t find money in their budget to employ extra police to have a reasonable presence in the area,” Caroline Springs resident Danial said. “[The violence] is not only affecting the people who’ve been victims, it affects uncles, aunties, cousins, neighbours, who are all living in fear.” In less than 48 hours, more than 3000 people ‘liked’ a Facebook page calling for a 24/7 police station at Caroline Springs as well as extra officers. An online petition has attracted 800 signatures. One resident, who wanted to remain anonymous, said social media had been “inundated” recently with posts about home invasions and carjackings around Caroline Springs. “The north-west is completely under-resourced when it comes to police,” the resident said. “Police themselves are frustrated. I’m hoping that our politicians take notice. “We’re not just calling for a police station to be manned 24 hours; we also need more units to be deployed.”
Police Association secretary Ron Iddles said that while there was no “quick fix”, two things could be done to “stem the tide” of violence. “Firstly, there must be a reintroduction of proactive police patrols and a more visible police presence in the community,” Mr Iddles said. “Secondly, our courts have a responsibility to impose appropriate sentences on those who are convicted of such offences. Unfortunately, this hasn’t been occurring.”
‘‘
[The violence] is not only affecting the victims - Danial
’’
In the latest incidents, police say a group of armed males forced their way into a Hillside home last Tuesday and demanded valuables and car keys. The offenders fled in the woman occupant’s white Holden HSV sedan. In another, two male teenagers armed with a baseball bat and a knife stole a mobile phone from an 11-year-old boy at the Taylors Hill skatepark on July 4. Witnesses described the offenders as “reasonably tall” and wearing darkcoloured clothing. Police believe they went to the skatepark with the intention to steal. Sergeant Rob Henley, of the Melton Crime Investigation Unit, said while police had not been able to confirm a link between the offenders and the Apex gang, they were not ruling out the possibility. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Compo for house that moved By Esther Lauaki Melton council agreed to pay a Caroline Springs couple a settlement of close to $100,000 after the wall, floor and roof of their house cracked because of ‘slab heave’ caused by council-planted trees. Home owners Tharwat and Jacqueline Bestawros took Melton council and the builders of their house to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal after they were unable to claim insurance for the damages. Slab heave is uneven movement of a house
footing and slab which causes significant damage to internal walls and ceilings. Melton council legal services manager Christine Denyer said a confidential settlement was reached in late 2015 by council’s insurer acting on its behalf. However the VCAT hearing continued to look at the case bought against the builders. A tribunal judgement, passed down on June 17, outlined the council’s settlement and found that the cracks were not caused by defective workmanship but by trees that were planted by the council outside the boundary fence on
the western side of the property. The tribunal said cracks in the external walls and damage to the walls and plaster inside the house started to show in December 2009, about a year after the family purchased it. A report in 2012 found that the house’s western wall had settled between 9mm and 35mm and resulted in the cracking in the tiles in the living areas on the first floor of the twostorey house as the slab rotated along this point. “The crack at the top of the stairs and the broken grout line appear to be related entirely
to the settlement issue,” the judgement said. “As to the other cracks, it appears that they are largely due to the same cause. The wall, floor and roof cracks survey in this report are as a result of footing rotation and settlement. This footing movement has been caused by a combination of the following issues, including the effect of nearby trees on the foundation supporting the footings as well as the grading of paving located against the building.” The builders were ordered by VCAT to pay more than $62,000 in damages to the family because of an engineering flaw in the slab.

It just goes to show what people can achieve in a community. We had so many people support the petition.” Mrs John with her husband and their two daughters, aged four and five, moved into the nighbourhood 18 months ago. “There are a lot more houses being built in the estate and a lot more families moving in,” she said. “A playground will give many of the families in the estate a place to play, relax, entertain and meet other local families … to help build a friendly and welcoming local community here
in the Essence estate and surrounding Stonehill estate. “It will be a great addition to our estate and make the reserve a much more usable space for all members of our local community.” Cr Tonia Dudzik congratulated the residents on Facebook. “Well done to the petition organiser,” she said. “Sometimes it pays to go to the effort of writing a petition on an issue. Enjoy the new playground.”

Moorabool council has heeded the call by residents of a Bacchus Marsh estate for a playground in their neighbourhood. More than 100 residents of the Essence estate in Maddingley signed a petition, created by mother-of-two Jasmine John, in January for a children’s playground at the reserve at Parkside Avenue. At its July meeting, council approved a playground for the reserve with a $20,000 contribution from the developers. “I’m so excited and so happy,” Mrs John said. “I was almost in tears when I heard the news.

Doctors are on high alert after five cases of highly contagious measles were confirmed in Victoria by the end of last week. All victims appear to have contracted the disease locally, its source pinpointed to an infected woman who travelled to Geelong, central Melbourne and bayside during its incubation period. While infectious, she was also in Shepparton, at Southern Cross Station and Melbourne Airport, from where she flew Jetstar to Brisbane, returning on June 28. Three of the five people who reported cases were in the Melbourne CBD between June 10 and 13. Victoria’s acting chief health officer, Finn Romanes, said it was likely there would be more cases and he advised people who had symptoms consistent with measles to seek medical advice from their doctor as soon as they notice. Anyone who was not fully vaccinated, with two measles-containing vaccines, or was uncertain of their vaccine status, should see a doctor if they had symptoms, Dr Romanes said. “Measles has an incubation period of up to 18 days so illness acquired from contact could still be coming through.” The viral disease lives in the nose and throat mucus of an infected person and sufferers can spread the virus for several days before symptoms begin to show. The characteristic rash usually appears three to five days after the first symptoms, starting on the face then spreading to the rest of the body. Contact 1300 651 160 for suspected cases. Petition backs pharmacy ‘script’ By Esther Lauaki Rockbank residents are getting behind a push to build a pharmacy in their neighbourhood, with an online petition collecting close to 600 signatures so far. Pharmacist Julian Daffy proposed building a pharmacy within the Woodlea development at Rockbank, but his application to the federal health ministry was rejected in May. He started the petition to support a second application. Mr Daffy said that one of the conditions for building new pharmacies was that there must be a supermarket within new housing areas – but a supermarket is not planned for Woodlea until at least 2020.
“The decision not to approve means that, under the current pharmacy location rules, residents of Rockbank will be denied a local pharmacy until a supermarket of sufficient size is established,” he said. “We already have a doctor who’s willing to move in with the pharmacy to service the community, but without approval of the pharmacy the doctor won’t be able to open. “The rapid expansion of this community and the delay until the Woodlea Local Town Centre is established means that the thousands of people residing and working in the Rockbank area will have to travel several kilometres to other suburbs to access pharmaceutical benefits.”
‘‘
Lack of access … disadvantages the most - Julian Daffy vulnerable
’’
The nearest pharmacy to Woodlea is in Melton, 6.7 kilometres away, and the nextnearest is Caroline Springs, 9.6 kilometres distant. “Residents will be required to commute by car via busy freeway or by using very infrequent public transport services,” Mr Daffy said. “These desperately need upgrading to access pharmacy services in the neighbouring suburbs, Melton or Caroline Springs, whose
residents in stark contrast enjoy walkingdistance access to numerous pharmacies. “This lack of access to essential pharmacy services greatly disadvantages the most vulnerable in the community, including the elderly, young families and those without access to a motor vehicle.” Mr Daffy, a Melbourne resident, is also involved in pharmacies in Teesdale, Smythesdale and Grantville. Upon completion, the Woodlea development will have about 7000 homes and 20,000 residents. More than 1200 lots have been purchased in the past 17 months. To sign the petition, go to: chn.ge/29wIJgS
Songlines of a nation Local Aboriginal artists have placed their creative focus on sacred sites, which are the subject of an exhibition that opened during last week’s NAIDOC Week celebrations. The exhibition is at the Caroline Springs Gallery where the artworks have been inspired by this year’s NAIDOC Week theme, “Songlines: the living narrative of our nation”. Songlines are intricate maps of land, sea and country that describe travel and trade routes and the location of waterholes and food. They are often recorded in traditional songs, stories, dance and visual art. Melton mayor Kathy Majdlik said the creative outlet gave local Aboriginal people a voice in their communities. “Our local Indigenous artists and young people have come up with artworks that tell
their own individual stories in remarkably different ways,” she said. “I encourage everyone to take the time to see these free exhibitions and experience just how differently we can see our environment.” The NAIDOC Week exhibition at the gallery, 193 Caroline Springs Boulevard, is open until Sunday, July 17. More than 470 World War I soldiers from Bacchus Marsh and nearby towns are to be memorialised in a book. Bacchus Marsh and District Historical Society member Katrina Lyle said the group had collated service records from the Australian War Memorial. But it is calling on local families to share stories about their loved ones who served in the war. “The enlistment records are so good – you can tell what the colour of their eyes were, their complexion, weight, height, whether they were married or single,” Ms Lyle said.
“Records are terrific, but what you don’t get is individual stories.” Ms Lyle says the book, which will be published in August, 2018 to commemorate the centenary of the planting of the Bacchus Marsh Avenue of Honour, will “bring to life” the soldiers. “In the emotional lives of families and of our nation, they hold a very important place,” she said. “And it’s important they’re not forgotten … to remember these generally young men who did an extraordinary thing.” Details: 5367 9336 or 0412 114 263 Sumeyya Ilanbey

Council ‘can do better’: residents By Esther Lauaki Moorabool council’s chief executive says it is “disheartening” to discover that people don’t think things are improving across the shire. “It’s disheartening that there’s no significant improvement in the results from last year,” Rob Croxford told a recent council meeting about feedback from this year’s community satisfaction survey. “That’s frustrating because we do make a conscious effort to make improvements,” he said. “Categories like public consultation and aged care services need improving. “I think the community satisfaction survey is
a very useful way of identifying what we should be focusing on.” Residents scored the council poorly on overall performance and direction, community consultation, advocacy, and decision-making during February and March. Meanwhile, traditional areas of complaint, such as the condition of sealed roads and council’s customer service, improved on last year’s survey. But the condition of streets and footpaths, support services for elderly people and recreational opportunities were cited among people’s biggest concerns. Moorabool council’s results were generally
on par or above other large rural council performances, despite its overall performance scoring lower than last year. The annual community satisfaction survey, which is now available for public perusal, provides a snapshot of community views of the council’s performance during the two months. The surveys are used as a yardstick to gauge the importance people place on a range of council services relative to how they are delivered. Key areas for improvement listed in Moorabool’s survey report included recreational facilities, family support services, the appearance of public areas, waste
management, and business and community development. The survey showed that Ballan residents are the most dissatisfied with Moorabool council services, while 18 to 34 year-olds were the age group most favourably disposed towards their council. Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins said this year’s council elections should give more background on the candidates than ever via the Know your Council website. Candidates for the October poll are being urged to include details of any training they have had to prepare themselves for the role.
Notes of music and wine A young Ballan songwriter who has made her mark on the world stage will play to home crowds next month for the Flavours of Moorabool festival. Demi Louise, 23, will be one of the homegrown acts to perform at the August 28 festival at St Anne’s Vineyard at Myrniong. The songstress made the bold decision to travel the world and grow a fan base organically via live shows, and has wowed audiences at festivals in Texas, Kansas, New York, Liverpool, South Korea and Toronto. Her debut single, Ruins, reached No. 7 on the iTunes Singer Songwriter chart, and in 2014 she won Pop Song of the Year at the Australian Songwriters Association awards. Flavours of Moorabool will showcase fresh local produce and culinary delights, and wines for which Moorabool is famous.
The festival will include an art market, food and wine stalls, vintage cars, sheep-herding by kelpies, animal exhibitions, and craft workshops. Cooking masterclasses will familiarise aspiring chefs with the best of local produce, and traders will be there, as will two pop-up restaurants. Flavours of Moorabool runs from 11am until 4pm. Claire, Jap and Willow are among the names chosen for the first babies born since the start of the financial year at Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital. The number of babies born at the hospital in the past financial year fell 35 per cent, to 607, compared to the year before. A hospital spokeswoman said the decline was not a result of any one factor and birth rates fluctuate every year. “It’s worth noting the positive changes we have put in place in the maternity department,” the spokeswoman said. “Djerriwarrh has a safe, secure and fully functioning maternity service, dedicated to servicing the local communities.”
Meanwhile, the state government last week announced $44.97 million in funding for the Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital – six per cent more than last year. The funding was part of the health budget allocations for the 2016-17 financial year, with the state investing $16.47 billion across the sector. Labor MP Don Nardella welcomed the “record” funding boost. “This extra funding for Djerriwarrh Health Services means more patients will be able to access the high-quality and safe care they need and deserve, when they need it, closer to home.” Sumeyya Ilanbey

Ms Clark will attend an exclusive lunch next month with Hollywood actress Susan Sarandon as part of Melbourne La Dolce Italia. The event, launched last year and attended by actress Sophia Loren, showcases all things Italian. Ms Clark said her prize came through a talkback call she made to a radio station. “I guess they appreciated what I had to say, because I ended up winning caller of the day and my prize was the tickets. “I couldn’t believe it. I’m a huge movie buff and I am Italian so this prize is right up my alley. I couldn’t contain my excitement. James Ross, also a member of the council’s youth spaces sub-committee, spoke at council’s July meeting in support of the study’s draft report. “I’ve always had the opportunity to work with service providers and young people,” Mr Ross said. “Something that has always been of concern is the lack of space where young people can go to hang out and play. That’s what we’re hoping to achieve here.” Moorabool council health and wellbeing committee chairwoman Tonia Dudzik said

young people needed somewhere safe to go, especially when they needed help or to find a safe alternative to home or school. “I have young children of my own so this means a lot to me,” Cr Dudzik said. “I also left home when I was 16 because I had no choice.
“I didn’t have access to services that I needed and that’s why I want this to happen. It’s really important that we get behind a space like this. “We need state and federal funding to help us do it,” Cr Dudzik said. “There’s no doubt we need youth spaces; we’ve needed them for years. “We need them to provide a place for young people to go to when they have an issue, whether it’s a mental health issue or experiencing abuse at home, whether needing help with drugs and alcohol counselling or with getting bullied, or needing to access education providers.”
SecondBite’s big heart Families doing it tough this winter need not go hungry, thanks to a food scheme being rolled out in Melton and Moorabool. As part of the five-week campaign, from June 29 to August 2, residents can buy a $2 donation card at Coles Caroline Springs, Burnside, Melton West, Melton South and Bacchus Marsh to raise money for SecondBite. The national food charity redistributes surplus fresh food to families in need. Money raised from each donation card will help deliver the equivalent of five healthy meals to families doing it tough. SecondBite chief executive Jim Mullan said the organisation had partnered with Coles since November 2011 to provide surplus fresh, nutritious food for people in need. “By working together, SecondBite and Coles are providing enough fresh food for more than 23,000 nutritious meals every single day to children and families across Australia,” he said.
“This cannot be achieved without the efforts of Coles and its team members.” Coles state general manager Sarah Hunter said the company was proud to help SecondBite, and she encouraged shoppers to get behind the campaign. “Too many people in our communities don’t have enough food to eat and aren’t able to afford healthy meals on a daily basis,” she said. “We can make a real difference to people doing it tough this winter.” Esther Lauaki

Rivals rally to help out Footy club rivals will come together to raise money for four Moorabool families that have been hit hard by cancer. A mother and three fathers of children who play for Darley Junior Football-Netball Club are battling the disease. The club will play the Bacchus Marsh Cobras in a fundraising match this Sunday (July 17) at Darley. Club president Matt Colley said the fundraiser would help cover expenses while the families were struggling. “When we heard about what these four families were going through from one of our members, we felt strongly for them,” he said. “We know that they are all doing it tough at the moment.

“One of the boys wasn’t going to play because, with his dad too unwell to work, the family was on a single income,” Mr Colley said. “When I met with the families to tell them the club would cover the sports expenses, they broke down and cried. “It’s very important for us to help out our community. Until you sit down with these … families and speak to them, you don’t understand what they are going through. “It’s heartbreaking.” Darley Junior Football-Netball Club has kicked off the fundraising with $5000 from canteen sales and barbecues and is inviting supporters to come along from 8am on July 17.
Plans for a childcare centre in Kurunjang have been given the green light despite residents’ concerns the children would interrupt the area’s “peaceful and tranquil environment”. Melton councillors have approved a planning permit for a childcare centre at 1911 Gisborne-Melton Road to accommodate 175 children and operate weekdays between 7am and 6pm. Objectors raised concerns including noise from children playing, glaring lighting around the carpark and traffic issues. In their report, council officers said childcare centres in residential areas were common and the Gisborne-Melton Road site was appropriate as it was off a main road and able to accommodate increased traffic volumes. The building on the site was previously used as a childcare centre. The permit has 25 conditions, including installing a new septic tank, not destroying native vegetation, and providing 40 carparking spaces. Cr Bob Turner moved an alternative recommendation that included the condition that the fence along the northern and western boundary of the site be replaced by a noise-proof fence. This recommendation was accepted by councillors Myles Bentley, Nola Dunn, Renata Cugliari, Lara Carli and Kathy Majdlik. Cr Sophie Ramsey was absent.

MY PLACE Stephanie Day founded the Ballan Arboretum Group in 2014 to share her love of trees with the community. She discusses their significant role in Moorabool’s heritage with Esther Lauaki. What’s your connection to Moorabool? I live in the township of Ballan and was the initiator of the idea for the Ballan Arboretum Group. Tell me about the group. I was one of the four local females who got together to build a culture for the town around trees and walking. The council has placed signage at the eastern and western entrances to the town noting that Ballan is regarded for its autumn foliage display. We wish to build tourism to the town, not only in autumn but throughout the year and to do it using a diversity of tree species. Why is the arboretum group important to Ballan? We believe that Ballan, being a small town, can have a big vision.
The idea of the talks is to discuss trees – their horticultural, social, historic and aesthetic value to our society. Tree decline creates human health decline. Just as we depend on each other, we also depend on the land and our environment for our wellbeing. Anna Foley, advocacy and conservation manager at National Trust of Australia, will discuss the significance of trees and their place in our shared heritage. A culture that values its

Landlord claims and work expenses go under the spotlight
T
he tax man cometh … and this year, according to Graham Whyte, assistant commissioner for individual taxpayers, work-related expenses and landlord income deduction claims will be in the spotlight.
Rental property owners should ensure any claims for repairs and maintenance are legitimate and fall under correct entitlements. Claims for broadband and mobile phone usage, and travel for work, will fall heavily under the gaze. Taxpayers are advised to have receipts to support claims and to carefully check entitlements. Melton is home to at least two tax specialists (see details below), so tax returns can be done locally, without any need to travel further afield. Ensure all paperwork is in hand prior to an appointment and these firms will give you personalised service.

A significant input by present owners has stepped this classically styled house up in terms of clever tweaks to its practicality, flexibility and ultimate liveability. There’s no stinting in spaciousness, decor is a blend of traditional and contemporary, and a spectacular outdoor room hits the heights. On a block of about 2086 square metres, the residence begins with a wide entrance hall where ornamental columns and a slightly pitched ceiling kicks off the journey through. tiled in soft sandstone, the en suite has a blackwood vanity unit (the timber for cabinetry throughout). Remaining bedrooms (one off the entry hall through double doors and also ideal as a study with a desk and shelves) share a bathroom, which has a spa – the toilet is separate. An open, carpeted lounge room near the leadlight-paned front doors is a big room, with multiple windows and a pair of blingy chandeliers, while the second living zone is a whopper, anchored by soft-sandstone tiles. Along with a family-meals space around the kitchen, there’s wide entry into
an expansive rumpus room. The kitchen has black granite topping blackwood cupboards and island bench, a corner pantry, and dishwasher, 900mm underbench oven and cooktop with Technika brand. Now the huge outdoor room … under a Colorbond ceiling and wrapped on three sides with windows/doors, this tiled room (with split-system) has a door on one side to a small, leafy courtyard and, on the other side, double sliders to a vast grey concrete seating area. give kids a great play space all year round. The huge backyard is home to many goodies – a massive Colorbond shed (concrete, power, rear roller-door); a large vegie patch and chook house; a vine-covered pergola above brick paving; and a well with submersible pump to top up water tanks of about 60,000-litre capacity. An integrated three-car garage, a 5kW German inverter solar system, side gates and attractive established gardens are other keynotes. Carole Levy 19 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 12, 2016

NEW HOMES AND LAND – Hotondo Homes
The Como design is on display and virtual tours are available via the website. (Supplied)
Aiming to provide second and third time buyers with a high standard of housing solutions, with stylish finishes and quality fittings, Hotondo Homes has launched its new housing range, Forever Oasis. Managing director at Hotondo Homes Michael Renwick believes the new range is a step forward for the company. “Our current ranges focus on first,
second and third property buyers, but the Forever Oasis range targets those who have been in the market for a while and are ready to build their ultimate dream place, said Mr Renwick. The new designs feature opulent living areas, sleek kitchens and spacious bedrooms with walk-in wardrobes. Hotondo Homes building designer Natalie
O’Shea says the new designs have been created to offer a comfortable lifestyle that third-time buyers may be after. “The Forever Oasis range was designed to add a touch of luxury to everyday living, and will feature larger windows and higher ceilings with spacious living areas that perfectly accommodate any growing family said Natalie.
There are two designs available, the Amora and the Como. Sizes and facades range for both, and floor plans can be tailored to suit any lifestyle and budget. The Como 390 is on display at 35 Bathgate Crescent, Cranbourne East. A virtual tour of the Como 390 is accessible via hotondo. com.au/3d-explore.

FOOD REVIEW
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir discovers real “chish and fips” at Caroline Springs Consider The Sauce loves the new school of flash fish and chip places. But what do we want from them? We want a nice, bright, clean setting. We expect to eat in-house. We want cooks/chefs who look like they know what they are on about – if they’re dressed smartly, so much the better. We like seeing a nice line-up of at least a couple of good salads. We most definitely expect to use real cutlery to eat food that is on real plates (or, in the case of Serenity Blu, on real boards). We want to see a good range of seafood available, both grilled and fried. Most of all, we’ve come to expect to be able to get fish, chips and salad, well presented, for under $20 – that is, at least $10 less than the same meal would cost in a restaurant proper, or pub. Serenity Blu, a new operation in Caroline Springs, housed in what was formerly Ocean’s D’Lish, scores well on all those counts. Though we’re equally happy to see they are enough grounded in “chish and fips” tradition to offer potato cakes and chips with gravy! And there are burgers, too … though we’re here for the fish. My mid-week lunch companion is Conan of the Yo India Food Truck, a Caroline Springs local. As we talk shop and other matters of mutual interest, we enjoy a very nice lunch. Conan chooses the grilled salmon with chips
SERENITY BLU Address: Shop 4/29-35 Lake Street, Caroline Springs. Address: 8390 1700 and salad ($17.50). The fish is well cooked, but still very good. My flathead fillet with chips and salad ($16.50) is every bit as fine. The fish is well battered and well cooked, and of a generous size. In both our cases, the chips are good … but fall short of great. My coleslaw – the serve is smaller, by my choice, than would’ve normally been provided – is fresh and lovely. Perhaps the biggest surprise is Conan’s quinoa/melon/grape salad. Normally, I’d be suspicious of anything so redolent of hipster wellness, but this really does taste wonderful.

SPORT No excuses as the Jets blow it It was a rare chance for the Western Jets to leave the excuses at the front door. The Jets had valid reasons why their talented team was sitting outside the TAC Cup top eight so deep into the campaign. They had been hampered by Vic Metro commitments of their star players and the unavailability of private school-linked players making a run for the school football finals, so getting a full strength side out on the park was proving the hardest task of all. The team they faced, Eastern Ranges, was in a similar predicament. It entered the weekend with an identical 4-8 record to the Jets and had an even bigger Big V representation.
For the first time in a long time, both clubs had full lists and it was perfect timing with a top eight spot up for grabs. The excuses were over, so who wanted it more? Not the Jets, who served up their worst performance of the season in a 90-point loss at Rams Arena in Craigieburn. Jets coach Torin Baker was understandably left feeling flat by the result. Seven unanswered second quarter goals to Eastern Ranges and the game was over. “They just dominated the contested ball and clearances and that was the game,” Baker said. The finals could already be beyond the Jets.
They are a game and percentage out of the top eight with a tough run home. Baker is more concerned with searching for the next win, not sorting out plans for September. “We realistically can’t be talking about finals at the moment,” he said. “It’s about getting the most improvement from individuals and then collectively.” Lance Jenkinson
Brodie Romensky was the stand-out Western Jets midfielder on a tough day. (Shawn Smits)
Clean sweep for Bloods By Tara Murray Melton’s slim finals hopes were kept alive after they returned to the winners’ list in the Ballarat Netball League. The Bloods had been stuck on two wins since round six as they struggled to match it with stronger sides. On Saturday, they played their best game of the season, defeating sixth-placed Sebastopol, 48-44. After an even first term, the Bloods shot away in the middle two, before surviving a lastquarter comeback from the Burras. Bloods player-coach Renee Hulls said it was the win they really needed. “To get it against a quality side was important,” she said. “All our netball sides got a win, the first time since we played Melton South, and it’s the first time across the football and netball season we’ve had a clean sweep this year.” The Bloods went into the match undermanned, with Hulls the only recognised goaler. Defender Katie Kakoschke started as goal shooter before moving into defence in the second quarter to shore up that end of the court. Hulls turned to midcourter Jessica Bartlett to be her shooting partner. “At a local level, she’s played goal attack and played a real feeder role,” Hulls said. “I don’t like playing shooter so I said to Jess she would need to play that feeder role from goal shooter. “She did a really great job feeding me the ball.” Hulls turned on a best-on-court performance, shooting 43 goals from 48 attempts to guide her side to the win. “I’m not quite sure where I pulled that from,” she said afterwards. With normal shooter Joanne Crozier to miss again next week, Hulls says they will look to use the same line-up. While Hulls was the standout on Saturday, she said getting an even four-quarter performance across the board had been key to the win, which sent the Bloods to eighth spot on the ladder, three games behind the Burras at sixth. Hulls knows they need to win most of their games in the run home. “If we’d won against Darley earlier in the year, we would definitely have a better chance of finishing top six,” she said. “We’ve been consistent for halves and three-quarters of games against the top sides but haven’t finished off. “We play Melton South, Bacchus Marsh, Sunbury and have a bye [worth four points] in the next few weeks.” In other results, Bacchus Marsh got its second win, defeating Melton South 56-32, while Lake Wendouree defeated Darley. 48 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 12, 2016
Warriors come back with a bang Melton Warriors’ return to the Victorian Rugby Union has gone better than they could have imagined. The club had to pull the pin in the middle of last season because of a shortage of numbers but returned this year with nine senior and junior teams. Warriors vice-president Liam Devlin said they were hoping to field one senior team and a couple of junior teams, but had well and truly exceeded that. “When we sat down at the start of the season we thought we may be lucky and have a senior team and under-10 and under-12,” he said. “We’ve got those three teams and we’ve been able to field a mixed women’s team, as well as teams from under-6 through to under-18.” And in a bonus for the Warriors, several teams, including the senior men’s team, are in with a chance of making finals. With three rounds to go, the Warriors are on top of the second division B ladder and second in division 2. On Saturday, the seniors beat Eltham 20-10 to make it 10 wins in a row. Most of the side is playing together this season for the first time. “We have only five players who have been here in the past,” Devlin said. “Our coaches, Mike Borrell and Te TeHay, have come from huge coaching backgrounds. Mike was a school rugby coach and Te coached rugby in the navy. “They brought a number of players with them.” A win this week against ladder leaders Melbourne will cement the Warriors’ place in the top two. “Going into a lower division than we’d previously played in we thought we’d be a top-four side with the quality of players around Melton. But to go on a 10-0 run was totally unexpected. “Melbourne will be a tough game and if we can get over the line against them we’re a chance for the minor premiership. “A loss could see us fall to third or fourth. We want to finish in the top two as it guarantees a quarter final.” Apart from Melbourne, Devlin sees Ballarat as the biggest challenger. “They’re the team to beat even though we are above them,” he said. “Some teams don’t travel as well, like Ballarat, but when you play them at home they’re very hard to beat.”
Renee Hulls guided her side to their third win of the season. (Damian Visentini)

Cobras sting Panthers
SPORT
By Tara Murray
Burras just keep on rolling
Bacchus Marsh kept a hold on second spot in the Ballarat Football League ladder with a percentage-boosting win against bottom side Melton South on Saturday. The Cobras flew out of the blocks in the first quarter, with a massive 14 scoring shots to show their intentions early on. The Panthers hit back to win the quarter by one point, but couldn’t maintain the intensity and went down 22.17 (149)-5.6 (36). Cameron Richardson was the standout up forward for the Cobras with six goals, as half the team got on the scoreboard. Marc Dransman was the only multiple goalscorer for the Panthers with two. In the upset of the round, Darley handed Lake Wendouree its first loss of the season in a thriller at C.E. Brown Reserve. The Devils had to do it the hard way, coming from behind at every break to win 13.14 (92)-12.17 (89). The Lakers looked on track at half-time to keep their 10-match winning streak alive when they led by 39 points. But the Devils had other ideas, kicking 10 goals to three in the second half to take the win. Dane Grenfell kicked three goals for the Devils, while Darren Leonard and Anthony Chui were best on ground. The win moves the reigning premiers back into the top six. Melton kept its finals hopes alive with a 32-point win against Sebastopol. With the exception of the second quarter, the Bloods controlled the match winning, 15.12 (102)-10.10 (70).
Diggers Rest’s winning streak was extended to 11 matches on Saturday when the Burras easily accounted for Melton Centrals in the Riddell District Football League. It was a big day on and off field at Arnolds Creek, as Centrals celebrated a multicultural round, which included a come-and-try day to encourage people from all backgrounds to get involved in the game. On the field, the result was never in doubt, with the ladder leaders doing it with ease to win 18.12 (120)-9.7 (61). It was set up in the first half, when the Burras restricted the Centrals to one goal. Joseph Piccolo kicked four for the Burras, while James Aquilina kicked three goals for Centrals. Former AFL player Cale Morton was best on ground, while Michael Evans was named in Centrals’ best two for a fourth straight game. Meanwhile, Rockbank was no match for Rupertswood at Ian Cowie Reserve. Eleven scoring shots to two in the first quarter showed the Sharks’ intent and they went on to win 29.25 (199)-3.4 (22). Alan Greenwood, Jared Warrick and Harley Cameron were the goal scorers for the Rams, with Thomas Mainey named their best. This weekend Diggers Rest faces Romsey, Rockbank plays Lancefield and Melton Centrals travels to Macedon. Tara Murray

SPORT STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
Neighbouring cricket clubs move to switch affiliation Kyneton and Malmsbury cricket clubs have applied to join Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s senior competition next season. Both clubs’ senior teams currently play in the Castlemaine and District Cricket Association, while their junior sides are already part of the GDCA. Existing GDCA clubs will vote at the association’s annual meeting next week on whether to accept the applications. GDCA secretary Rob McIntyre said the clubs and the association had spoken regularly about the possible move and members of both clubs had voted overwhelmingly in support of the switch between associations. “The Castlemaine and Maryborough
cricket associations have been discussing the possibility of amalgamating in the next year or two,” McIntyre said. “Kyneton and Malmsbury cricket clubs feel that being on the southern end of the Castlemaine DCA would be a disadvantage in travelling and may affect their playing numbers. “These applications will be presented and voted on by the clubs at the annual general meeting on July 18 and will require a 75 per cent majority for the applications to be approved. “The fact that the two clubs already have junior teams in the GDCA should provide a favourable outcome.” McIntyre said if the two clubs did join the GDCA competition they would take five senior
teams with them, bringing the number to 70 based on last season’s numbers. Last season, Kyneton had teams in the A-reserve, B-grade, B-reserve and C-grade/ under-16 competitions. They won the B-grade competition. Malmsbury had two senior sides which played in B-grade and B-reserve. The B-grade team finished on top of the ladder before being bundled out in the first week of finals. “This will mean either adding an extra grade or the option of increasing the number of teams per grade from the current eight to 10,” McIntyre said. “Whether this happens across all grades or just the lower grades will be up for discussion
Melton’s month of truth By Tara Murray Three successfully down, one to go for Melton Centrals in four weeks of netball that could set up their Riddell District Netball League title hopes. Facing top-six contenders Rupertswood, Lancefield, Diggers Rest and Macedon in consecutive weeks, Centrals coach Randy Pereira always knew this period could decide if his team was a top-four side. So far, the Centrals have passed with flying colours, with three wins from the first of those four matches, and now have designs on finishing third on the ladder. On Saturday, the Centrals made hard work out of what should have been an easy win against Diggers Rest. With Centrals 10 goals up with eight minutes remaining, a win looked assured, but the Burras didn’t give up and pushed Centrals all the way. The Centrals held on to win 51-50. Pereira said his side went to sleep in the final quarter. “When you play in A-grade and play sides like Diggers Rest you can’t switch off and not pay for it,” he said. He said Amy Carroll and Meredith Ball switched on in the last quarter for Diggers Rest and his side was lucky to win after dominating for more than three quarters. Goal attack Rebecca Morabito was the stand-out for the Centrals, named best on court for a fourth straight match. “Since she has gone to goal attack she has been massive,” Pereira said. “The dynamic has changed. Vanessa [Seddon] is a tall shooter and while she has one of the ugliest shots for goal, she gets them in and is awkward to match up on. “Having Tran [Truong] back also adds some extra speed.” Centrals are sitting at third spot on the ladder, a game clear of their next opponent, Macedon. A win this week will almost seal that third position for them. Pereira said he believed that Riddell and Rupertswood would claim the top two positions. “If you finish third and beat the side which finishes sixth, you get a second chance,” he said. “Saying that, if Diggers Rest finishes sixth we know they could beat us. Besides the bottom few sides, it’s an even competition.” Pereira said he expected defender Mel Laird to return to the side for the round 16 game against Rockbank. Laird has only played three games due to Victorian Netball League commitments and injury. “The defence has been working well,” he said. “It will give me a headache who to leave out of the starting line-up once she returns.” In other results, Riddell moved ahead of Rupertswood at the top of the ladder after beating Lancefield, Macedon came from behind to beat Romsey and Broadford was too good for Wallan.

should the applications be granted.” McIntyre has previously said that clubs prefer an eight-team competition, each team playing a one-day and two-day match against the others. He said the restructuring of some of the lower grades to become all one-day fixtures was also an option, with the association to put the options to clubs at an affiliation meeting in August. Last season, Kyneton had junior teams in the GDCA under-11, 12 and 14s, while Malmsbury has an under-14 team. The only other Macedon Ranges club not playing seniors in the GDCA is Clarkefield. Melton Thoroughbreds scored an important away win against Shepparton on Saturday night. After a hard contest for the first three quarters, the Thoroughbreds shot away in the last quarter, winning 86-71. Ivan Harris had his best game of the season scoring 32 points, as all eight players got on the scoreboard. The win means the Thoroughbreds remain in fourth spot.
Soccer
Melton Phoenix played out a 0-0 draw against Surf Coast on Saturday in FFV state league 4 west. The one point from the draw keeps the Phoenix in touch with the sides just above them. In other matches, Spring Hills suffered a 3-1 loss to Brimbank Stallions. Spring Hills remains 11th on the ladder.
Football
Even without their top two goalkickers, Caroline Springs easily accounted for West Footscray on Saturday in Western Region Football League division 2. Aaron King, Jason Degabriele and Matt Chapman kicked four goals each for the Lakers, with Stefan Caterino best on ground. The Lakers remain third on the ladder, one game behind North Footscray and Yarraville Seddon Eagles.
EDFL
Hillside did its finals hopes no harm when they upset second placed Westmeadows in Essendon District Football League division 1. The Sharks had to come from behind at three-quarter time to get the win. They kept the Tigers goal-less in the last quarter to win 7.13 (55)-7.11 (53). Riza Gashi put in a best-on-ground performance to help his side get over the line. The Sharks are now just percentage outside the top four. In other matches, Taylors Lakes defeated Northern Saints. In division 2, Burnside Heights lost to East Keilor, 34.21 (225)-7.2 (44)
CHFL
The ladder is finally starting to work itself out in the Central Highlands Football League. Until the past few weeks, only one game separated the top eight sides, with four sides sitting equal on points on top of the ladder. Now only two teams remain at the top of the ladder, with Buninyong and Springbank winning their 11th games of the season on Saturday, against Gordon and Newlyn respectively. They are a game clear of three sides, and a further game clear of sixth spot. FOR MORE SPORT, VISIT Web: starweekly.com.au Melton & Moorabool Star Weekly @starweeklysport @star_weekly

NO REASONABLE OFFER REFUSED 53 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 12, 2016

MOTOR
A mover to the max By David Bonnici Some people movers have evolved to become luxury vehicles that are very much on the pricey side for anyone needing more than seven seats. The Hyundai iMax seems to address these issues. Inside Unlike people movers such as the Kia Carnival or Chrysler Voyager, the iMax has a bit more commercial feel inside. But it has enough

creature comforts for driver and passengers. If your job was to drive this all day, it makes for a comfortable office, with captain-chair-style front seats with fold-down arm rests. It has a touch screen with the usual phone, device connectivity and reverse camera – obviously very handy for a vehicle this size. The air-conditioning is rather rudimentary, but works very well in the large cabin with separate controls and vents in the passenger compartment. There’s no centre console, I guess for want of access between the front seats
and passenger area. To compensate for lack of central storage, there are two pockets in each of the doors and a couple of cup holders pop out of the dashboard underneath the gear stick. The passenger seats are also comfortable. This is a true eight-seater in that the rear-most seats fit three adults comfortably and aren’t a token addition in case you end up with a couple of extra kids to take home from netball. Access is simple via sliding doors on both sides. The middle row seats adjust back and forth and fold forward to assist access to the
rear much in the same way as the front seats of a two-door car. The back cargo area is really big and will fit a considerable amount of luggage, which makes the iMax popular as a hotel shuttle. The only disappointing thing with the iMax is the fact the rear seats don’t fold down or flat, or come out easily, should you want to turn your mini bus into a van. Such a feature could make this a really good all-rounder. On the plus side, you won’t have friends asking you to help them move house. The drive Despite it’s size, the 2.5-litre diesel engine version I test drove is zippy even with a full passenger load. The five-speed automatic transmission is responsive without the lag you get in some turbo-diesel cars. It was a little slow to respond to hills in cruise control. It’s an easy vehicle to drive and you shouldn’t be daunted if you’ve never driven a van before. Despite the high seating position and the truck-like grunt of the diesel engine it drives like a car. While it looks big, it fits easily into carparking spaces. And while it might be a little longer than most cars, it’s not much wider. If anything, the flat nose makes it easier to park than most cars. The Hyundai iMax comes with a 2.4-litre petrol or 2.5-litre turbo-diesel engine, the latter being the best bet for economy, driveability and resale value if you can afford it. Prices start from about $43,700 drive away. For more information or to book a test drive, visit Harrison Hyundai, 158-162 High Street, Melton. Inquiries: 8746 0380 or www.harrisonhyundai.com.au
