NEWS + SPORT + PROPERTY GUIDE ■ 400 rally for more police ■ Top cop ‘understands’ community’s fear

‘A right to feel safe’ A Labor MP has urged Melton and Caroline Springs residents rallying for more frontline police to “maintain your rage, maintain your pressure, maintain your activism”. At a rally attended by more than 400 people in Caroline Springs at the weekend, upper house Western Metropolitan MP Cesar Melhem said previous governments had not “caught up with [police] numbers to match the population growth”. “There’s no question, it’s a no brainer that we need more police on the beat,” Mr Melhem said. “I can assure you the government accepts that proposition because that’s the only solution. “The western suburbs has grown very quickly, but unfortunately we haven’t caught up with the numbers to match the population growth. “I can see that, you can see that, and now the government sees that.” North-West Division police Commander Russell Barrett told the rally that population growth in the area had “outstripped” the service demand Victoria Police could provide, but he could not say when the Melton police service area would be receiving extra police. Commander Barrett told residents Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton, who was not present, had acknowledged the community was living in fear. “I have every understanding why people would be fearful,” Commander Barrett said. “I feel for the community. “There’s been considerable growth in Caroline Springs, we can’t hide away from that. The growth is significant; it’s outstripped the service demand we can provide.” He said the message from Chief Commissioner Ashton was “very clear”: the extra 300 frontline police funded in this year’s state budget would be deployed to high-growth and high-crime areas. Police have said that those officers are not expected to graduate from the Police Academy until next year. One resident, Paulo Penailillo, told the rally he had once called triple-0 five times without a response.

He told Commander Barrett his family was living in fear. “What are we calling triple-0 for?” Mr Penailillo asked. “We end up sleeping with the dog inside because we’re living in fear. What do we have to do? Get a gun? Shoot them?” Holding placards reading “More Police”, “24 Hour Police” and “Safe Streets”, residents demanded extra police immediately. Police Association secretary Ron Iddles said the community was not feeling safe and, unless addressed, law and order would be the “number one” issue at the next state election. “You have a right to be safe in your community and you have a right to feel safe, and I know from what I’ve heard that you don’t feel safe,” Mr Iddles said.

‘‘

I’ve never seen a computer leave a police - Ron Iddles station

’’

“When you don’t feel safe in your community, it becomes a government issue. It hits at the community, it hits at the basic fabric of our society.” Mr Iddles said while he acknowledged the state government had funded 300 police over the next two years, those numbers were not enough to keep up with population growth. “We’re behind the eight-ball,” he said. “There’s been an investment in building police stations, in technology. The current government says we’re going to give iPads. The current government says this iPad is worth 500 police. I’m here to tell you I’ve never seen an iPad drive to a serious assault. I’ve never seen a computer leave a police station.” Upper house Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Bernie Finn said the rally had sent a “loud and clear message” to Spring Street. He said the government was failing in its responsibility to protect its citizens. “We must demand more police,” he said. “We need the police to protect us. That must be the government’s first priority.”

Citizens jury urges rail upgrade to beat the sprawl In a recent interim report, the jury stated this upgrade would “mitigate the effects of excessive urban sprawl”. Other reasons why the electrification was flagged a priority were the improved capacity to Geelong, Bendigo and Ballarat railway lines, taking people off the roads to the city, making affordable housing choices available in regional towns with access to Melbourne, and cutting time and overcrowding for commuters. Infrastructure Victoria estimates the electrification of line, including new tracks and the removal of three level crossings between

Sunshine and Melton, would cost between $1 billion and $5 billion. The report came just as the state government announced construction on duplicating the line had been brought forward to coincide with building the new Caroline Springs station. The first section of the duplication, a one-kilometre section between Christies Road and the new station, will be ready early next year, while duplication of the remaining 16 kilometres will start next year. A small-business festival planned for Melton is aimed at putting the municipality on the map and showcasing the “great things” local businesses are achieving. Melton council will host the annual ‘Mastering the Transition: Growing Your Business and Taking it to the Next Level’ as part of the Victorian Small Business Festival at the Western BACE on Ferris Road, Melton South, this Thursday. The event will be packed with workshops, presentations and networking opportunities “that are worthwhile for all to attend”, Western BACE chief executive Mark Corrie said. “As part of the day, Marketing Entourage will facilitate a session on perfecting an ‘elevator pitch’, and those attending will have the chance to win a professional marketing pitch video from Western BACE’s own SPB Creative Media,” Mr Corrie said. “The day is also an important showcase of the Western BACE and all the great things the businesses here are achieving. “I encourage as many people as possible to attend and more like-minded, motivated business owners to join us.” Presenters of information on ‘ways to grow your business’ will include Yellow Brick Road, Chocoholic Tours, SPB Creative Media and Marketing Entourage. West calling: let’s get down to business

By Sumeyya Ilanbey The Caroline Springs Football Club is one of the leaders in women’s and girls’ footy across the state, boasting more than 60 female players … but the club isn’t happy. Club director Marc Raak says the girls have been forced to use “substandard” facilities where power and water to their portable changing rooms, toilets and showers is precarious. And if Melton council doesn’t urgently upgrade its town centre home grounds, says Mr Raak, the club will have to turn families away. “We’ve been in negotiations with Melton [council] for the past two years to upgrade the facilities… but we’ve hit a dead end most times, which is a shame because we don’t want to turn anyone away, especially kids, and especially girls.” The club now has two girls’ teams and is looking at having a women’s team next season, but Mr Raak says the current facilities are so inadequate that the club will struggle. The families are “frustrated” at the lack of facilities and commitment the council is showing to the Caroline Springs Football Club, Mr Raak says. “We’ve had meeting after meeting with Melton council … but we need some action. “We’re at the brink now, especially with the expansion of the girls’ team and the signing on with the Collingwood Football Club.” Mr Raak says the club hopes to attract professional AFL players and clubs, but “when they do arrive, we want to show them that we do have the basic facilities”. The female change rooms and bathrooms, and storage rooms are the most pressing issues that need to be addressed, according to Mr Raak. “[Melton council] tells us what they gotta tell us and hope we go away. We’re not going away. We’ve got all of these great things on the go and we need to have facilities to keep pace.” Melton council recreation and youth manager Adrian Burns said money to upgrade the town centre grounds was not provided in

electrification of the Ballarat line was identified as a priority project, a dedicated national fund for outer suburbs was needed. Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said the state government looks forward to receiving Infrastructure Victoria’s final report at the end of the year. “Duplication to Melton will reduce delays, create space to run more trains and pave the way for the electrification of the line in the future,” she said.

An independent ‘citizens’ jury has strongly endorsed the electrification of the Ballarat railway line from Sunshine to Melton. Infrastructure Victoria convened two citizens juries – one regional and one metropolitan – each made up of about 40 randomly selected people, who were asked to prioritise statewide projects and plans. The electrification of the Ballarat line was tagged “high priority” by the jury, which met six times over a three-month period to consider evidence, hear from experts and deliberate on more than 200 projects and policies.

For several months, Melton Specialist School students armed themselves with gardening tools and made the trip down the road to the local primary school. Students designed and built six vegetable wicking beds at Melton West Primary School, brought in the mulch and planted 60 plants – including some winter vegetables – to beautify the school gardens. Melton Specialist School horticulture trainer Heather Chambers describes her VCAL and year 10 students’ efforts as “unbelievable”. “They worked so hard,” Ms Chambers said. “They were unbelievable. “Our mission statement in horticulture is to

be community-minded, and Melton West was just up the road. “One of the staff members approached us and asked if we could help them with building a veggie garden … and we agreed.” Ms Chambers said the 12 VCAL students worked on the garden beds every Wednesday, while the 10 year 10 students helped out on Thursdays. Ms Chambers says if she could “touch the mind of one child about the environment and how we need to care for it”, that would be rewarding. Sumeyya Ilanbey

RSL thrown membership lifeline By Sumeyya Ilanbey The Ballan RSL has been saved following fears it would be forced to close its doors because of declining membership. Member Janet Nason said the RSL could now look forward to celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2019 after more than 25 people signed up at a weekend membership drive. “There’s a commitment from those who have signed on,” Ms Nason said. Before the weekend’s drive, the Ballan RSL had just 18 members, a handful of whom were considered “active”.

Ms Nason is hopeful the membership drive is just the beginning of new things and the Ballan community will continue supporting the RSL. “We’ve lost 41 [Australian] soldiers to suicide just this year,” Ms Nason said. “[Veterans] need support and the RSL can point these people in the right direction. “It’s also a social gathering for older members, and even for younger ones, to come together when they have so much in common. “We were approached by people who wanted to become members, to not let the memory fade of those who had gone before, and are

still in battle, in Afghanistan and other places.” Ballan RSL secretary Muriel Snaith last Friday told Star Weekly the average age of its current members was about 75, with most of the “active” members in their 80s. Ms Snaith said she feared younger members

would not realise the hours and work that were involved to keep the RSL alive. “I hate to think what could happen to the RSL,” Ms Snaith said. “We want more members, but what we’ve got to get is more financial members. “Membership fees go into the club coffers and it’s the members who help with the running of the club.” The Ballan RSL was founded in 1919 after more than 800 men and women from the area had served in World War I. For more information about the RSL or to join, call president Bob Nason on 0431 862 899.

Diagnosis helps, stigma hurts By Sumeyya Ilanbey When Leesha* was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome late last year, the family thought they had found light at the end of the tunnel. After all, the diagnosis explained the 11-year-old City of Melton girl’s quirky ways. Leesha (not her real name) has a wild imagination, loves storytelling but finds it extremely difficult to make friends. She has difficulty with conversation and picking up on facial expressions, making life in the schoolyard extremely difficult. “I have four children and with most of the problems my children have encountered I’ve

been able to teach them the skills to move beyond those problems,” Leesha’s mother, Kelly, says. “But when your child has a problem where they have no friends because of a disability … that’s the hardest problem I’ve had to deal with and it’s heartbreaking.” After countless appointments with health professionals, Kelly decided to speak publicly about her daughter’s plight and start a conversation about Asperger’s Syndrome. “I got to a point where we realised our daughter’s not sick; her brain works a different way,” Kelly says. “We feel, as a family, it’s just a different way to be and it’s not the wrong way to be. At the

‘‘

Why wouldn’t we want people to know? Why should we feel ashamed?

’’

- Kelly end, it got to the point that made me realise maybe the only people who can help the kids and [Leesha] are the parents. “Unless we have explicit conversations with our children and tell them not everyone is going to be like you, then it’s not going to change.” Kelly has asked Leesha’s school principal to distribute a letter she’s written to parents about

Asperger’s Syndrome and what families can do to help. Kelly hopes to break down the taboos and stigma, which, she says, is still associated with Asperger’s Syndrome. “[Leesha] looks normal, she’s a beautiful, attractive girl but has challenges. There’s still a stigma… “Why wouldn’t we want people to know? Why would we be ashamed?” Denise Cran, principal psychologist with western suburbs service Discovering Strength, encouraged parents to speak to their children about inclusiveness and diversity. “Educate your children that some disabilities are hidden,” Ms Cran said.

Soils ain’t just soils … “They’ve been thrilled because their plants aren’t dying … they’re thriving.” Western Water has put out a call to other Melton and Bacchus Marsh schools and community groups who may need funding of up to $2000 as part of its grants program. For more information and eligibility criteria, visit westernwater.com.au or call 9218 5527. Entries close Friday, September 23, and grant recipients will be announced during Water Week in October. Each time green thumbs at Exford Primary School attempted to inspire some life in the gardens, plants would die. Soil quality was so poor, it was almost impossible for anything to survive, assistant principal Adam Bright says. But after receiving a $1000 Western Water grant to purchase good soil, not only are the plants surviving, they’re thriving. “The soil quality at the back of the school was so poor, things we planted there previously had died,” Mr Bright says. “We used the grant money – and put in a little bit of our money to top it up – to purchase some new soil. We bought drought-tolerant [native] plants, and the kids did all the planting.” Mr Bright says the pupils are “thrilled” to be able to walk past the garden beds, water the plants and see them blossom.

Growth steers vision for future By Sumeyya Ilanbey Melton and Moorabool councils say they’re not surprised by a report that identifies the neighbours as the fastest growing municipalities in the state. In the next 15 years, more than 153,000 people are expected to call Melton home – making it the fastest growing municipality (4.4 per cent per annum), and the third largest in the state behind Wyndham and Casey. Meanwhile, Moorabool’s population is expected to increase by 2.4 per cent per annum – making it the second fastest growing regional

municipality, a recent Department of Land, Water and Planning report found. Moorabool chief executive Rob Croxford said there had been an “extraordinary amount” of interest in Moorabool – particularly in Bacchus Marsh. And, with steady growth, there needs to be a “serious” vision for and investment in the shire, he said. “For the past few years, we’ve been working on a Bacchus Marsh 2041 vision. “It is essentially based on a whole lot of strategic work around transport planning, land use planning, community planning, social services planning and recreational planning.”

He said the council was not simply “sitting back and wondering what’s going to happen”. Mr Croxford said while work was under way at Halletts Way’s on and off ramps to the Western Freeway at Bacchus Marsh, and also the early-years hub at Darley, the shire still needs significant investment, including funds to fix traffic woes at Bacchus Marsh and upgrade the recreation reserve at West Maddingley. “We’re behind the eight-ball, and population growth is occurring – we’ve got to do something about it,” Mr Croxford said. Melton council city design, strategy and

environment manager Laura Jo Mellan said early investment and delivering infrastructure would ensure “we are creating resilient and healthy communities for the future”. Ms Mellan said more schools, local jobs, health care, and improved transport networks were vital to keeping pace with population growth, which will be focused on Plumpton, Rockbank, Melton and Melton South. “Moderate growth is expected in Diggers Rest, Kurunjang, Melton West and Eynesbury,” Ms Mellan said. “Warehouse and industrial growth are expected in Ravenhall and Truganina.”

A licence to show off When Bill Lucas “accidentally” stumbled across 979fm Melton Community Radio in 1986, he fell in love with the idea of community radio. “I thought, that’s lovely music, I’d like to do it,” Mr Lucas says. Thirty years on, he’s still on the airwaves. These days, Mr Lucas co-hosts Your Community Show each Wednesday with Jeff Tabone and Johnny Soprano. But audience engagement has been declining, Mr Lucas says. He hopes more Melton residents will embrace their local radio station. “It’s a community thing, for people from all walks of life. Everyone’s equal and we give everyone a go no matter what,” he says. “But community radio has not been listened to as much as I’d like it to be listened to.” Mr Lucas believes the future of radio is in the community sector as opposed to the

commercial stations simply playing music. “We need to communicate with people and what better way is there than community radio?” he says. Mr Soprano says being on the airwaves allows presenters to “show off like nobody’s business” and find their knack for storytelling. Trainee Brendan McGrath says he might have found his true calling. “I was unemployed for some time and I decided to get involved with 979fm Melton Community Radio because this is more of a passion than real work,” Mr McGrath says. “It gives me a chance to express myself. “Today I was talking about firewood at my own home – just a lot of commonsense stuff.” To learn more about the radio station, search 979fm Melton Community Radio on Facebook. Call for social housing target By Sumeyya Ilanbey Homelessness in Melbourne’s CBD is “only the tip of the iceberg”, with thousands of people in the suburbs sleeping rough, a western suburbs agency has reported. There are 75 families urgently waiting for help to find a home in Melton, Western Homelessness Network co-ordinator Sarah Langmore said. In the past financial year, 529 Melton families have sought help for homelessness – of these, 156 were single people, 307 were single

parents with children, 42 were couples and 83 were aged 24 and younger. “Our services have been finding an increase in the number of families experiencing homelessness, with a very high number of young people experiencing homelessness,” Ms Langmore said. “What’s happening in the CBD is just one side of the homelessness crisis … where we have hundreds in the CBD, we have thousands in the suburbs often couch-surfing, living in garages.” Ms Langmore said housing affordability was

one of the biggest issues driving homelessness, with services not equipped to deal with the crisis. There are 24,000 public housing units across the north-west suburbs, with another 19,000 families on the waiting list, Ms Langmore said. “We don’t have enough housing. All we can offer is a few nights accommodation in substandard [places] – hotels where families are mixing with other people, can’t cook their own meals – with no end in sight,” she said. Ms Langmore hopes the Census data will “prove” what agencies are saying about

homelessness, and encourage governments to acknowledge affordable housing as a “key social issue”. Umbrella agency North and West Homelessness Networks last week called for an end to “Band-Aiding homelessness” with inadequate funding and short-term solutions. “We need governments, the business sector and the community to act now,” it stated, calling for legislation to mandate 20 per cent of new developments as social housing. “This will quickly provide an increase in housing stock that we so desperately need.”

Lessons in a lunchbox When Melton council announced its inaugural Green Light lunchbox competition, Geoff Ward jumped at the opportunity. “Why wouldn’t you get on board?” he says. The competition encouraged Melton eateries to provide a tasty, healthy lunch option for children during the June school holidays. Mr Ward’s Breathe Cafe, on High Street, received the ‘dietitian’s choice’ award for his grilled chicken wrap, carrot and cucumber sticks with tzatziki and diced fruit salad ‘lunchbox’. “It’s fantastic getting dietitian’s choice,” he says. “Healthy eating is everything. It sets kids up for the rest of their lives. If you start them on chips and sauces, that’s what they’re going to be having in adulthood.” FOOD BILLjoined the challenge to prepare Six eateries lunches in accordance with the Australian Dietary Guidelines’ ‘traffic light system’: green

for ‘best choices’, amber for ‘choose carefully’ and red for ‘limit’. Melton mayor Kathy Majdlik said teaching children about the benefits of healthy eating was a priority for the council. “Alongside physical activity, good nutrition plays an important role in maintaining health and preventing lifestyle-related conditions like diabetes and heart disease,” Cr Majdlik said. “Council takes the health and wellbeing of its residents seriously and we’re always keen to deliver programs that address the key health issues affecting our municipality.” Ajays received the ‘people’s choice’ award for its grilled chicken tenders with vegetables or side salad and piece-of-fruit lunchbox, while Melton Waves won ‘children’s choice’ with its lunchbox of salad wrap, small bag of popcorn, fruit skewer and bottle of water. Jim Asimakopoulos’s motto in life is to never give up, no matter what. The Melton West man was born with cerebral palsy, meaning he has trouble moving. But he has no trouble living life to the full. “My main message is to never give up,” Mr Asimakopoulos says. “And if you believe in yourself, that will help you to not give up.” For the past 27 years, Mr Asimakopoulos has been working with the Education Department, visiting schools across the state and speaking with students about “what people with cerebral palsy can and can’t do”. “I wanted to get the message out that people with disabilities are people,” he says. “When I speak with students, I’m very honest about my experiences.” Until recently, Mr Asimakopoulos used a Traveller’s Aid assistant to help him get on and off public transport, to and from work. He says they were “absolutely fantastic”. “While I was using them, they were fantastic. I would recommend them because they really care about us and understand how to assist all kinds of people,” he says. “What they provide is really important for the public.” Travellers Aid Australia recently celebrated its 100th birthday. The not-for-profit organisation helps all kinds of people navigate through the public transport system. Chief executive Elias Lebbos says the organisation helps people from all walks of life. “Over the last century, no matter what Australia has been confronted with, we have evolved and responded as an organisation to meet the needs of people in transit through Melbourne and regional Victoria,” Mr Lebbos says. MY PLACE Tim Welshe was only 16 when he volunteered to join the Country Fire Authority. Now 30, the diesel mechanic is captain of the Diggers Rest brigade. He tells Sumeyya Ilanbey about life in what was once “a small country town”.

I’ve lived in Diggers for 11 years and was a member of the brigade prior to moving. It was the dynamic – the environment and the surrounding areas – that drew me to it, the country feel of it. What’s your favourite thing about living in Diggers Rest? The community and the way everyone bands together, unlike a larger city. Whenever, as a brigade, we need assistance, there are always people locally who help us out. What would you change about the area if you could? Development of the town has brought about a lot of infrastructure, so not a great deal of infrastructure change is needed. Maybe maintaining that country feeling would be the main thing. Where’s your favourite place to hang out in Diggers Rest? Obviously the fire station. It’s different to my day job where I’m a mechanic relying on myself and my small team. At the brigade, I’m working with a well-trained, dynamic team who are all there for a common good. I’m either working

on the trucks at the station or at home. I pretty much keep to myself. Why did you decide to join the CFA? Emergency service runs in my family. It was a natural progression growing up that I would join one of the emergency services, and I decided to join the fire service. The dynamic of the work the fire services do … plus a lot of my friends were in the brigade, so I was following them, and it allowed me to build a network and build camaraderie. What have been some of the highlights of working at the Diggers Rest fire brigade? It’d be the interaction I’ve been able to have with other people in town, other volunteers, and the friendships I’ve formed. What do you enjoy most about volunteering here? Having the ability to see people grow, and their skill sets when training them or working with them. Seeing someone come off the street, apprehensive of fire, and then knowing how to work with fire and put it out, is fantastic. The Diggers Rest fire station, at 1 Plumpton Road, will hold a recruitment drive from 7am, Monday, September 12.

Get paid for hiring smart Sarina Russo Job Access at Melton has access to $3.05 million to distribute to Melton employers willing to give eligible jobseekers on its list a go at a job. Manager Marlene Cassar thinks it extraordinary how many employers are not tapping into the Australian government’s ‘jobactive’ wage subsidies. “We have 470 wage subsidy-eligible, employment-ready jobseekers on our books,” Ms Cassar says. “We screen all our jobseekers, many of whom are already experienced and skilful, to ensure the best fit with an employer. And these jobseekers are ready for an immediate start. Available wage subsidies include: • $10,000 a year for each mature-aged jobseeker (over 50 years old) hired for at least 30 hours a week • $6500 a year for each young jobseeker (under 30 years old) hired for at least 30 hours a week • $6500 a year for each parent returning to work hired for at least 30 hours a week • $6500 a year for each indigenous jobseeker hired for at least 30 hours a week • $6500 a year for each long-term unemployed jobseeker hired for at least 30 hours a week • Pro rata payments for part-time work, between 15 and 29 hours a week “If, for example, a business employs a jobseeker older than 50, it will receive a $10,000 a year subsidy – equating to $192 a week. “That’s a great help to employers, not only cutting wage bills, but an amount able to cover the cost of training a new employee, building their skills and helping them develop into a valued staff member. “Savvy employers realise there’s a huge untapped workforce of mature-aged people, parents returning to work and young jobseekers. The jobactive wage subsidy is actually designed

FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir road-tests a whole new barbecue experience … Phi Phi 2 is a new sister eatery to the local favourite across the road. Phi Phi 2, with its lighter, tighter lunch menu, serves a limited range of curries and salads. But the night-time action is overwhelmingly about cooked-at-table BBQ and hot pots. Given the hot pot variation is freely available at a couple of nearby joints and more broadly across the west, almost all customers go the BBQ route. We do, too, with abandon and, ultimately, great joy. Phi Phi 2 is done out in dark wood, with most of the seating in booths that line the long room. There’s a trio of tall, small tables at the front windows overlooking Alfrieda Street and a couple of bigger tables at the back. Our host, Jentsy, tells us the BBQ food here has its roots very deeply in South Korea, but much of the seasoning/sauces/marinades and the ritual come more directly from Vietnam where this kind of cooking is very popular. We start with two dishes from the entree list. Crispy tiger prawns ($12.90) are cocooned in crunchy noodles that shatter upon being chomped. The prawns, dipped in the accompanying sauce, are excellent. BBQ lamb ribs ($10.90) seem a big serve, but there are just four, resting on a fluffy bed of greens. They’re fine: fatty, as expected, but with great flavour. Then we’re onto sides ’n’ stuff – a green salad, bowls of kimchi and pickled bean sprouts, and the like.

18 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 16, 2016

PHI PHI 2 Address: 31a Alfrieda Street, St Albans Phone: 9077 2466 It may not be saying a helluva lot, but this is the best kimchi we’ve ever had. As well, we are each given three dipping sauces for the BBQ goodies – soy/miso, a mild chilli with lemongrass, and a tamarind. Here’s what we order: Pork belly salt-chilli marinade ($12.90), ox tongue ($9.90) and chicken thigh Thai marinade ($11.90). We also get a vegetable and mushroom combo ($14). The glowing coals are brought to our table and then it’s on! The vegetables take a good deal longer than the meats, but it’s all fantastic. The meats are charred nicely, every mouthful succulent. Bottom line – this is some kind of nirvana for meat eaters. Bennie rates the pork belly the highest; I love the ox tongue the most. The vegetables are all terrific, too – three different kinds of mushroom, okra, pumpkin, eggplant, corn. The one lapse – and the only quibble – are the chat spud halves. They’ve been partially boiled before hitting the grill, but are still a little under-cooked and even (perhaps) out of place. It’s a lovely thing to see some flash on Alfrieda Street! Kenny Weir is the founder of Consider the Sauce, the definitive guide to eating in Melbourne’s western suburbs – www.considerthesauce.net

The good-sized backyard has access to the remote-controlled double garage. Other features include ducted heating and evaporative cooling.

DARLEY 139 Holts Lane, 3340 Raine & Horne: 9743 6866

Price: $370,000 – $410,000

At the western end of Holts Lane (or ‘hill end’ as locals know it), this is a place likely to tempt families looking for an attractive price point in a town where the median house price hovers around $400,000. The Orbit Homes-built house, which perches on a downward sloping block of about 700 square metres, fits the bill for a crew looking for the always-popular two living zones/four-bedroom combo. It’s a well-presented place, with a colour palette of cream and soft-grey, and

all windows are dressed in streamlined, practical vertical blinds. Entry is directly into a beige-carpeted lounge room, the spot for adult retreat when gathering with friends, or for the kids to watch their own movie. The informal living hub at the back incorporates a large, carpeted family-meals zone with a split-system to tame Darley’s temperature extremes. The kitchen has grey floor tiles matching the grey laminate benchtops, cream splashback tiles, ample storage including a

two-door cupboard pantry, an underbench oven, gas cooktop and dishwasher. Windows behind the sink allow views of the big, west-facing timber deck, which is open to the elements – a pergola could be considered for the future. The main bedroom at the front has a ceiling fan, fitted walk-in wardrobe and a good-sized en suite with a big shower and dual semi-recessed basins. Three more bedrooms are down a carpeted hallway, each with mirrored built-in wardrobes. They share the hall with

A fenced dog run along the back fence is joined by an aviary. Centrals break drought

Goldfields girls get a go

By Tara Murray Melton Centrals returned to the winners’ list for the first time since round 1, but it wasn’t without a fight against Rockbank in the Riddell District Football League. With only one win between the two sides entering the match, and a Centrals’ victory in an early season match-up between them, both sides were keen to taste victory. Centrals started well and led by 31 points at the first break, and this proved the difference, as they went on to win 15.16 (106)-12.10 (82). The Rams, though, made the Centrals work hard for the win, not letting the margin blow out. The Rams won both the second and last quarters, the first quarters they’ve won all year. Michael Egan, returning from a hamstring injury, kicked five goals in a best-on-ground performance for the Centrals. Thomas Robinson, who kicked two goals, and Cole Harvey were also among the best for the Centrals. For the Rams, it was by far their best performance of the year. It was only the second time they had scored more than 30 points for a game this season, and the final tally was 39 points higher than their previous best score. Result-wise it was also their best; they hadn’t been closer than 73 points at the end of a game. Alan Greenwood kicked four goals, while Jake Warwick and Leigh Sporle kicked two goals each. Warwick, Greenwood and Mark Steven were the best for the Rams. Centrals, who will finish the year in 11th spot, takes on Broadford in the final round of the season. Rockbank’s tough season will come to an end against Wallan who is fighting for a finals spot.

AFL Goldfields is hoping a new come-and-try program will encourage the next generation of female footballers. The free program, which started on Friday night, is designed to help girls hone their skills while having fun. On for six weeks at Melton’s Arnolds Creek Recreation Reserve, the program is the second to be run by AFL Goldfields. AFL Goldfields, which oversees football in the region, has run a similar program at Ballarat for the past two years. The success of this program resulted in a four-team, under-12 competition there. AFL Goldfields football development manager Grant McMillan is hoping to attract girls from across Melton and Moorabool areas, as well as Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges. “Female football participation is increasing very rapidly,” he said. “The Goldfields under-12 girls come-and-try program … could start many female players on a journey that now has a genuine pathway, from Auskick through to the elite level, with the National Women’s competition becoming a reality in 2017.” McMillan is hoping this latest program will have similar success. It is for girls born between 1-1-2004 and 31-12-2009. “This program is all about learning new skills, having fun, enjoying their football and increasing participation.” Details: 8746 2924 or 0411 380 093, or email grant.mcmillan@aflvic.com.au Tara Murray

SPORT Motivated by loss, Centrals tune up for grand final Melton Centrals are looking for revenge against Manor Lakes in the Victorian Women’s Football League north-west grand final. Having suffered their first loss of the season, a one-point thriller against Manor Lakes in the semi-finals, Centrals made the most of their second chance at a grand final spot on Sunday against Shepparton. Shepparton provided another close final but it was Centrals at the winning end of the scoreboard: 6.5 (41)-5.4 (34). The win booked them a grand final showdown with Manor Lakes. Centrals coach Janelle Martin said it was a relief to make it through to the grand final, having been the best team all season. “I think we needed that loss,” she said. “It has motivated the girls and I think we play better without having the break.”

On Sunday, the match played out as Martin expected: a hard-fought contest. “It was very tough,” she said. “They brought everything and it was what I’d hoped it would be, a hard-fought slog that went in our direction for the whole game. There was no point at which I thought they’d kick away.” The experienced Chelsea Forbes starred up forward for Centrals with three goals, while Alice Masters took on an unfamiliar rucking role and dominated. Shireace Newton, Linda Morren and Louise Martino were others to stand out. Martin said the club’s normal two rucks would return for the grand final, making for some hard decisions at the selection table. Two of the club’s stalwarts, Kate Salenta and Tara Crisp, celebrated their 100th games in the weekend win.

Martin said the side was keen to make amends for last week’s result against Manor Lakes, but it would take confidence into the match having beaten them twice during the season. “Losing last week has been a bonus for us,” she said. “We got another game under our belt and we want revenge.” Centrals’ last flag came in 2007 when Martin was still playing. Martin said current players Salenta, Alicia Henderson and Forbes were part of the last premiership team. The grand final is at Coburg City Oval on Sunday from noon. Tara Murray Jaime Nankiville and Melton Centrals are looking for revenge. (Shawn Smits)

Burras win a real ripper By Tara Murray If Saturday’s match between Diggers Rest and Riddell was a sign of things to come in Riddell District Football League, then it will be a cracker of a finals series. The match-up between the undefeated Burras and third-placed Bombers was just the kind of tough game fans were seeking. For only the second time this season, the Burras trailed at half-time, with the Bombers leading by 14 points. The Burras kicked the only two goals of the third quarter to level the scores before both teams struggled to score in the last quarter. A single goal was kicked in the last quarter – and it proved to be the matchwinner for the Burras, who won 9.11 (65)-8.9 (57). Burras coach Shaun Sims said it was the type of game his side needed in the run to finals. “We always knew it was going to be a really hard-fought game, as they are trying to hold on to third spot,” he said. “One of their stalwarts was playing their 200th game and they had a premiership reunion, so there was a big crowd,” he said. “It was a fantastic game of footy which was great to watch and to be a part of it.” In the first half, the Bombers were able to make the most of their opportunities as the Burras struggled to go forward. “They defended well,” Sims said. “Both teams were trying really hard … we just ground out the win. We were lucky to be on top in the end. “It was really tough and both sides had good patches. We were having some issues scoring, but couldn’t doubt our effort around the ball.” Michael Evans kicked three goals for the Burras and Thomas Gleeson and Brent Tuckey kicked two each. Andrew Tyquin was named best on ground. For the Bombers, Ben Said kicked three goals with Michael Sahlberg the only other multiple goalscorer. Jason Allen was named their best. Sims said he expected to meet the Bombers come finals time. The win sealed top spot for the Burras, but they know that will means nothing if they can’t win the grand final. The Burras will play Sunbury Kangaroos in the final round of the season. The Kangaroos need a win to play finals. “We only played them a few weeks ago,” Sims said. “The pressure was good from them in the first half before it dropped off. They probably dropped some games early on that they would have liked to win.” Sims said Jason Williams, Luke Smailes, Jamie Lobb and Cole Laurie would all be available for selection. The Burras’ reserves, who also lost in a grand final last year, will also finish the season on top of the ladder. 45 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 16, 2016

Devils in pole position for last finals spot The race for sixth, and final, spot in the Ballarat Football League finals will go down to the final round, with three teams still in the mix. Darley got the jump on the chasing pack on Saturday with a hard-fought win against bottom side Melton South. The win means the Devils enter the final round in sixth spot, a game ahead of East Point and Melton. Darley was made to work hard for the win against the winless Panthers, who produced their best game for the season. The Devils looked to have the match won when they kicked seven of the first nine goals in the last quarter to open up what looked like a match-winning lead. As they have done many times this season, the Panthers kicked late goals, but they were too far back, losing 19.19 (133)-18.13 (121). Jake Ancrum kicked three goals for the Devils, while five other players kicked doubles. Shaun White kicked four goals for the Panthers, who finish the season without a win; they have a bye in the final round. The win means the Devils need just a win in the final round to stay sixth – and they’re taking on Sunbury Lions, who have won five games straight. East Point, in seventh position, has, on paper, the easiest final round match, against 10-placed Sebastopol. If the Devils lose, all East Point needs to do is win as it has a far superior percentage. Melton’s finals hopes still have a faint heartbeat, but everything needs to go its way after losing to East Point on Saturday, East Point was way too strong for the Bloods, winning 20.17 (137)-6.9 (45). A 12-goals-to-two second quarter proved the difference in the match. For the Bloods to make the finals, they have to have a percentage-boosting win against fourth-placed North Ballarat City and hope Darley has a big loss and East Point loses, too. While three sides are fighting for sixth spot, Bacchus Marsh and Lake Wendouree will face each other in the final round for top spot. The two sides will then play each other in the first week of finals. On Saturday, Bacchus Marsh beat Ballarat 20.10 (130)-5.6 (36). Hamish Coulton kicked five goals in the Cobras’ win.

Collingwood on the lead in mentor role for Lakers girls

Caroline Springs youth girls players with Collingwood’s Meg Hutchins. (Supplied)

A new partnership between Caroline Springs and Collingwood football clubs will provide local female footballers the best opportunities to succeed. With the introduction of the women’s AFL from next year, the Magpies approached a couple of grass-roots clubs across Melbourne, including the Lakers, about forming partnerships. Lakers’ senior operations manager Marc Raak said the club jumped at the opportunity to be involved with the Magpies. The Lakers fielded two youth girls sides this year. “We want to increase that next year,” Raak said. “We’re trying to get a senior team up and going as well.

“This program will give us a clear direction. We’ll utilise their knowledge and sometimes train at the Holden Centre. They will help us with getting a coach for the senior women’s team.” Magpie women’s football operations manager Meg Hutchins said the partnerships were about providing girls the right advice and structures from an early age. “Basically we want to grow their youth girls program and make it as strong as possible,” Hutchins said. Hutchins said the interaction between the two clubs would provide the Lakers opportunities not afforded to other clubs. “We will potentially host them for training sessions at the Holden Centre,” she said. “They

Melton clicks, wins big By Tara Murray An almost perfect first half from the Melton Thoroughbreds set the tone for a massive Big V division 1 semi-final win against Latrobe City on Saturday night. The Thoroughbreds, who were coming off two successive losses to Blackburn, came out firing in the first quarter, opening up an 18-point lead at quarter-time. Much of the same occurred in the second quarter as the Thoroughbreds continued to shoot at more than 60 per cent from the field. They led by a massive 29 points at the main break. They were unable to sustain the same momentum in the second half, being out-scored 49-36, but had still done enough to secure a 92-76 win. Thoroughbreds coach Julie McCallum was thrilled with how her side came out early on. “We worked all season for this and everything clicked,” McCallum said. “There’s a lot of experience out there. We know in finals, you have to step up. We executed well and forced them into turnovers. They couldn’t get back into their game.” McCallum said it was always going to be tough to maintain the momentum in the second half. “It is hard – you know you will not continue to shoot at 60 per cent,” she said. “We spoke about keeping focus and I don’t think we did that well at all.” All 11 players got on the court, with McCallum saying it was good for the likes of Jake Prior and Jackson Jones to get finals experience. Five players finished in double figures with Ivan Harris top scoring with 19 points. The win came after the game had to be moved to Caroline Springs Leisure Centre from Melton Basketball Stadium, where a burst pipe had made the floor unsafe. McCallum said that while the move didn’t affect the players, it was disappointing. She said she was unsure if the Melton court would be ready for use should the Thoroughbreds make the best-of-three grand final series. “It was disappointing that the only court in Melton was unavailable,” she said. “We shouldn’t have to go to Caroline Springs – it’s an ongoing issue. “We don’t have the facilities and we lost spectators. Caroline Springs only holds 300 people. Our court holds 900 people.” The Thoroughbreds next challenge is one of the hardest in Big V – travelling to Warrnambool, with a grand final spot up for grabs. The teams have split their two games this season, with the Thoroughbreds winning the last time they played. “I think we will have to contain everyone but Nathan Sobey,” McCallum said. “He will get his 30 to 40 points every week, so we need to stop everyone else.” Melton Thoroughbred’s Jason Todorov flies for a basket against Latrobe City. may be present at some [Magpies] training sessions and watch the team train.” Hutchins, who will likely play for the Magpies next year, said there had been nothing comparable in female football when she started playing. “I had to step away from playing when I was 10 or 11,” she said. A group of Lakers players has already met Hutchins, with Raak saying they had learnt much from her. “We got to go out for lunch with her and spend a couple of hours talking,” he said. “They’ve got ideas and have already taken a lot of advice from her.” Tara Murray

Melton out but not down It was grand final heartache for Melton Rugby Union Club on Saturday. After a fairytale season in the Victoria Rugby League 2B division, Melton fell just short in its grand final against Ballarat. Scores were level, with 10 minutes to go, when a Melton player was sent off for arguing a referee’s decision. Ballarat made the most of its extra player and scored a try, which proved the winner, and took the title 18-13. Melton vice-president Liam Devlin said it was heartbreaking to get so close, only to fall short. “It was disappointing as we had played so well,” he said. “We knew it was going to be a tight and a really close game. “We started the stronger of the two teams and had the better part of it in the first half hour. “Things started to swing their way. With 10 minutes to go, it was 13-13. The last six minutes, they were able to control it after they had hit the front. “It was the tightest of margins.” Devlin said he’s proud of how far his side has come this season after it folded last year due to a lack of numbers. “It was a great first year back and, hopefully, there’s a fire in the belly to go one further next year. We went better than expected. “Most of the players are looking to stick around for a few years. It’s a good starting block for the future.” While the seniors’ run is over, the club still has junior sides in finals. Tara Murray

Diggers Rest’s fate in the finals will again come down to the final round, after it lost to Riddell on Saturday. The 62-36 loss saw the Burras slip from sixth to seventh, with Lancefield beating Woodend-Hekset. The Burras need to beat the Sunbury Kangaroos in the final round, and hope fourth-placed Romsey can beat Lancefield. Melton Centrals, which had the week off due to Rockbank not having an A-grade side, plays Broadford in the final round. They will either finish fourth or fifth, but will play Romsey in the first week of the finals, either way. Metro Tune puts a purr in your car no matter what the problem All drivers eventually experience that sinking feeling when their cars begin to clunk and wheeze, but Metro Tune in Melton has had cars purring out of its workshop since 1994. Metro Tune owner of 21 years, Chris Georghiou says he’s seen lots of changes in the industry, but one thing that has stayed the same is the worry clients feel when their car begins making unwanted sounds. “One of the biggest changes has been the evolution of LPG about 10 years ago,” he says. “And I’ve been a part of the research and development of vapour injection and diesel gas injection systems. “LPG conversions have come a long way,” Chris explains. “With vapour injection there is an increase in fuel economy and power. Also, backfiring is eliminated completely and a thing of the past. Basically, we handle any LPG service, conversion or tune/repair.” “There is also a performance part of the business with our own in-house Dyno, which is not only for performance tuning but everyday performance and economy tuning,” Chris says. “We can reflash most Ford and Holden ECU’s as well as tune Haltech, Microtech, Nistune and more. We supply fit and cutom tune Rapid Chips for most diesel vehicles, and Memcal chip and j3 chip burning is also available.” As a VACC repairer and a member of the Automobile Alternative Fuels Registration Board, Metro Tune provides log-book warranty servicing and road-worthy certificates, as well as tyres and all mechanical repairs. Ezipay finance and interest-free payment facilities are available. Metro Tune, Factory 3, 86-88 High Street, Melton. Open 8am-5pm Monday-Friday and by appointment on Saturdays. Rod and Sheryl Easdown test drive a Range Rover Sport SVR

ROD’S VERDICT Yes please, I’ll take two.

ig SUVs can be most intimidating and they don’t come much bigger than this. And yet the Rangie turns out to be an easy drive. Far easier than it is to park, but you’ll even get used to its 12.3-metre turning circle with time. I pottered around while I got used to it but the aggressive throb of the motor is always there and I grew to like it. So on a lonely stretch of road I gave it its head. The sound as it rips up through the gears is electrifying and the acceleration is stunning. This is one very exciting car. And it’s solid, safe, comfortable and takes heaps of luggage. There’s lots of suede and piped leather; it’s sort of casino chic in here. But why does the cruise control not react to slower traffic ahead? Why is the lane departure software so fussy? Why do the shift paddles only work in sport mode? Maybe because the SVR is far from being the most expensive Rangie. The others get more stuff but this is certainly the most fun to drive.

IT HAS \

A 405-kilowatt supercharged 5-litre V8 with an 8-speed auto.

WE GOT \

20.5 litres per 100km in the city, 9.6 in the country. The official combined figure is 13.

he overriding problem with this car is guilt. The SVR is a weapon. It goes like a cat in a dog pound, it handles brilliantly for such a big lump and it rides wonderfully well. The five-litre V8 sounds fantastic, especially when the exhaust button is pressed to bypass some of the hardware down there – a deep, muscular note that turns into a serrated roar as the revs climb. In short, you go weak at the knees. And then there’s the guilt for having too much fun. It’s not the fuel (about 500 city kilometres to a tank, but then the tank is 105 litres); if you can afford an SVR you can afford the fuel. It’s the cost to the planet. Folk to the left wave their fingers and talk of the dolphins you’re choking, on the right they remind you of oil imports and the balance of trade. So you have trouble sleeping. But when you do you’ll dream about your last SVR experience and wake up smiling. Not very PC, but since when did dreams have to be PC?

When your life is boring and you’ve got a spare quarter-million …
