Courting disaster By Sumeyya Ilanbey Rising floors, split floorboards and lifting walls – that’s how Melton Basketball Club senior men’s head coach Julie McCallum describes the Melton Recreation Reserve. Less than a fortnight ago, home venue matches were cancelled because Melton council deemed the courts unsafe. “This is the fourth time [in 10 years] that the floor has lifted on court one due to drainage problems,” Ms McCallum said. “There’s a split down the middle of the court, a section that’s lifting away from whatever is supporting it and when you walk or jump on it, there’s incredible movement.
‘‘
It’s not adequate for the population that uses it.
’’
- Julie McCallum
“There’s all this glue coming off the floors on various parts of the court, and Melton council has said it’s not safe to play on.” Ms McCallum said while Melton council had “re-done” the floorboards several times, “they don’t fix the problem; they Band-Aid it”. She believes there are drainage issues, which haven’t been adequately addressed by the council. Following periods of heavy rainfall, cracks begin to emerge, Ms McCallum said. Two weekends ago when court one was deemed unsafe, the club was forced to cancel four games and rearrange its match timetables one day before they were due to play. “It was just a logistical nightmare and we’re kind of sick of it,” Ms McCallum said. “We have over 1000 participants and we get nothing, no proper facilities. It’s not adequate for the population that uses it.” Ms McCallum said many residents had expended “blood, sweat and tears” to get the club running while working with young people to get them off the streets. But the club felt “betrayed” by Melton council. “We need to start making some noise and I don’t know what the answer is, but please give us some land, give us a grant or build us a stadium,” Ms McCallum said. “It has to happen at some point.” Melton council recreation and youth manager Adrian Burns said the council had replaced the flooring on court one three years ago. He said there were no plans to upgrade the facility as it wasn’t a council-owned asset but was simply managed by council. Mr Burns said

about $330,000 was spent over the past three years on upgrades, maintenance and utility costs for the centre. “Council recognises the current growth of the Melton township and will consider the future provision of additional indoor court facilities in light of this growth,” Mr Burns said.
“The Melton Indoor Recreation Centre is now 37 years old and heavily utilised by both the community and Melton Secondary College. “As could be expected of an older building, council receives occasional complaints regarding the condition of the facility, in particular roof leaks and issues with hot water,
as well as comments about the age of the centre. Each complaint is responded to promptly.” Mr Burns said prior to replacing the floors in 2013, major drainage works were undertaken, including landscaping works to the south and west ends of the building, and all drains around the building were upgraded.

Residents lose tower fight By Sumeyya Ilanbey Taylors Hill residents have lost their battle to stop a mobile phone tower going up nearby after a tribunal overturned Melton council’s refusal to grant it a planning permit. The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal has given the green light for Vodafone to erect an 18.34-metre mobile phone tower at 142 Hume Drive, commonly known as the Melbourne water tank reserve. More than 50 residents objected to the original planning application last year, which
proposed a 25-metre tower, saying it would affect their amenity and their health. Similar plans by telecommunication companies Orange and Telstra at the same location were defeated in 2001 and 2005. But VCAT member Michael Nelthorpe last week granted Vodafone its permit, deeming the mobile phone tower’s visual impact “acceptable” as it would not be a “dominant” feature, and any impact would be mitigated by landscaping. Mr Nelthorpe said a mobile phone tower in an established neighbourhood was a reasonable
proposal, and the current water tank at the site was “a significantly more dominant [feature] than the monopole”. “Taylors Hill has an open skyline caused by the lack of overhead power lines and the relative immaturity of landscaping in private gardens,” Mr Nelthorpe said. “However, I expect this will change over time as gardens mature.” Mr Nelthorpe said Melton council’s refusals of planning permits for Orange and Telstra more than a decade ago did not imply the site was unsuitable. “The permit applicants in those earlier cases
did not seek a review of those decisions, thus I have no indication as to whether these previous proposals would have succeeded or failed.” Objections relating to health impacts from electromagnetic radiation were ruled out. Taylors Hill resident Stavroula Singh, who spearheaded the campaign against the tower, said she was bitterly disappointed. Melton council planning services manager Bob Baggio said there was no avenue for appeal. A Vodafone spokeswoman said the tower would address high numbers of complaints from residents about poor mobile coverage.
Chickens die in fowl mishap
A long life recognised
Crates of live chickens that fell off the back of a moving truck had a most unhappy landing for their occupants – onto the doorstep of a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant in Bacchus Marsh. The incident, in which many of the birds died, was captured on film by vegan Jessica Carter, who said she was walking nearby when she saw “a commotion” in Bacchus Marsh at 2pm on Tuesday. Ms Carter said injured and dead birds were being crammed back into cages. In her video, some in a crowd of people are seen to flip an upturned cage filled with pellets of live birds, while others gather up stunned chickens, many with bald patches, that have come free onto the street. “There were dead chickens, there were injured chickens. I’m not saying this as a vegan, but it was really quite distressing,” Ms Carter said. A police spokeswoman said she believed that four crates came off a truck at the corner of Gisborne Road and Bennett Street. The spokeswoman said Bacchus Marsh police attended the scene of the accident and “assisted to rehabilitate the scene”. Ms Carter described the location of the incident as “poignant,” and said she had initially thought it might have been a stunt. “It truly was just one of those terrible coincidences. “The fact that there were dead and injured chickens and the way they were handling them, there’s just no way that any animal group would do that,” she said.
Life hasn’t always been a smooth sail for Joan Mitchell, who celebrated her 100th birthday on Monday. The Melton woman was born at an orphanage in Tasmania on August 22, 1916. She never met her birth parents, nor has she found out her dad’s identity. Son Bob Greg says his mum was “passed from pillar to post” when she was adopted at the age of six. The centenarian married her first husband Charles Greg in 1934. He died in 1942 when she was six months pregnant with their fourth child. “We had three boys and then [Charles] died while I was on the road for another child – a girl,” Ms Mitchell said. “He would’ve loved her because he wanted a girl.” Ms Mitchell worked as a book binder and an envelope-maker for several years. In 1956, she married Will Mitchell, who died a decade later. Ms Mitchell says the secret to longevity is avoiding alcohol and cigarettes and “doing the best you can with what you have”. She celebrated her birthday with close friends and family on Monday afternoon. Ms Mitchell had four children, one of whom died earlier this year. She also has nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Killer jailed for 25 years By Jane Lee, The Age A man who stabbed his former partner to death outside a Sunshine shopping centre, just hours after he was ordered to stay away from her, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison. In May this year, a jury unanimously found Craig McDermott, 40, guilty of murdering the mother of his four children, Melton woman Fiona Warzywoda, 33, in April 2014. The pair had previously been a de facto couple for 18 years. Last Wednesday, Supreme Court Justice Jane Dixon sentenced McDermott to 25 years’ imprisonment, saying he had shown no remorse and calling the murder a “brazen and deadly attack on an unarmed woman”. “Along with taking the life of the person you said you loved, you have irretrievably damaged the happiness and stability of all of your children, and ruined your own future,” she said. The judge said that despite previous homicidal thoughts, McDermott had only planned to kill his former partner that morning. The judge said the murder, in “public defiance of court orders, which were designed to protect your former partner and family, is a reminder to all that it is because of the destructive actions of the few that the need for protective legislation has steadily increased in recent decades”. “If you had obeyed those orders, your children would still have a mother and father to guide them through their childhood and adolescence,” Justice Dixon said last week. McDermott stabbed Ms Warzywoda six times with a knife he had bought minutes earlier. He left her fighting for her life – she died at the scene.
Fiona Warzywoda’s brother Paul Judge speaks outside the Supreme Court after Craig McDermott was found guilty of her murder. (The Age) Inset: Fiona Warzywoda.
During the trial, McDermott tried to claim Ms Warzywoda was responsible for the attack, arguing she had arrived armed with the knife, and that he had stabbed her in self-defence. Justice Dixon rejected this, saying there was “overwhelming” evidence that he had bought the knife shortly before the incident. McDermott had a history of family violence, spurred by alcohol, the court heard. Outside court, Ms Warzywoda’s siblings said the family was pleased with the court’s decision. Her brother, Paul Judge, said they were “really,
really happy that he got a decent sentence”. Mr Judge said their family now had the chance to move on with their lives, and thanked everyone involved. He said he hoped McDermott’s long sentence would deter others from breaching family violence intervention orders designed to protect women and children. “Family violence does need to stop,” Mr Judge said, while Jolene Warzywoda said she missed her sister and thought of her every day. “She was a loving mum, a very caring person,” Ms Warzywoda said.

Blood testing urged for fireys The state government is being urged to set up “robust and transparent” testing regimes for firefighters who were exposed to toxic chemicals at the controversial, now-closed Fiskville training site. The United Firefighters Union launched the ‘Justice for Fiskville’ campaign at the steps of State Parliament last Tuesday, calling on the government to establish “independent, comprehensive, timely and consistent” blood testing. Senior MFB station officer Mick Tisbury, who began investigating water quality at the site in 2012, said the chemicals were a “ticking time bomb”. “The former Liberal government and the former CFA board failed to establish proper blood testing regimes,” Mr Tisbury said. “I have unacceptably high levels of PFOS and PFOA in my blood, and no one can tell me what that means for my health. These chemicals are a time bomb, ticking away in our bodies.” A CFA spokesman said the organisation was offering Perfluorochemical (PFC) blood testing for past and present members who attended the Fiskville site. “Results from these tests take longer than regular blood testing to be completed and provided by the pathology service to, firstly, a specialist government laboratory in Sydney then to CFA’s medical officer,” the spokesman said. “Once the medical officer has reviewed all relevant information, they will discuss these with the individuals.” Sumeyya Ilanbey

GRAHAM DEMPSEY
Syrup that saves the day When Graham Dempsey first donated blood in 1964, he didn’t think much of it. The following year, he was involved in a serious accident and needed a blood transfusion. Just one year later, he was hit by another car. “I got hit by another car in Frankston when I was riding my pushbike, and I ended up in hospital again,” Mr Dempsey says. “I said to myself ‘when I get out, if I recover from this, I’m going to be a blood donor. I’ll give it back’.” Five decades on, the Melton man celebrated his 700th blood donation on August 12, – the first Victorian blood donor to reach this milestone. And he has potentially saved the lives of more than 2000 people.

“The best experience was when I did a direct donation to two people – they had leukaemia,” the 76-year-old says. “After the [transfusion] finishes, you just couldn’t believe it was the same guy. “He looked so sick before he got my syrup – I just couldn’t believe it.” Mr Dempsey says there’s “no excuse” to not donate blood. “You never know when you’re going to need it yourself.” A mobile blood donation centre will come to Melton from Monday, August 20, until September 2 at Melton Community Hall, 232 High Street. Cops off their beat … not gone By Sumeyya Ilanbey Sixteen Melton and Caroline Springs police have been removed from frontline duties, despite a recent crime wave and the pleas from residents for more boots on the ground. Police Association secretary Ron Iddles said when frontline police were seconded from their roles, the “hole” they left behind at their stations remained unfilled. “It is these police who respond to answer triple-0 emergency calls and provide proactive patrols in the community,” Mr Iddles said. “The current fixation of Victoria Police with a taskforce policing model … puts the investigation and response to crime before its prevention. “[This] is creating … a cycle of offending that becomes more difficult to break every day.” More than 400 people rallied in Caroline Springs earlier this month, demanding extra frontline police. As reported by Star Weekly, one resident told the rally he once called triple-0 five times, and got no response. Victoria Police spokesman Ben Radisich said the 16 officers currently on secondment remained within the Melton area. He said deployed officers are working in units dealing with issues including domestic violence, as well as crime response. But the Police Association claims some of the 16 have been deployed to other police stations, including Keilor Downs.
“Officers working in Melton and Caroline Springs make up part of a broader division where resources, such as highway patrols, local detectives, and sexual offence and child investigation teams can work across areas,” Mr Radisich said. “Police within the division can be moved around to respond to issues as they arise, while continuing to provide a frontline service to the local community.”
‘‘
Immediate pressures that are felt in the west are being addressed - Lisa Neville
’’
Mr Radisich did not respond to Star Weekly’s question asking if the seconded officers had been replaced by members from other divisions, including transit police and Operational Response Unit officers. Meanwhile, Police Minister Lisa Neville said the state government is “determined” to put more frontline police on the beat. “The immediate pressures that are felt in the west are being addressed – with police deploying additional resources, including day and night patrols and extra teams from the Operational Response Unit. “They are resulting in significant arrests and also the prevention of further incidents, including aggravated burglaries.” Ms Neville said more than 140 arrests had been made since May as part of Operation Cosmas – a taskforce cracking down on aggravated burglaries and carjackings.

For all ages, a sad day “They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.” Dozens of people turned out to the Melton cenotaph last Wednesday to ‘remember’ the 18 Australian soldiers who were killed during the Battle of Long Tan. The Melton RSL held commemorations for the 50th anniversary of one of the deadliest Vietnam War conflicts. Melton RSL president Ian Lawrey said the commemorative events were “very, very
important” for veterans and their families. “It’s important for veterans’ wives to come along and remember their loved ones,” Mr Lawrey said. “It’s a hard thing to explain; it means something different to everybody, I guess, but the memories will never go away and it’s good to get together at least one day of the year and celebrate that time, as we do with Anzac Day and Remembrance Day.” Local school students, political staffers, councillors, members of the Partners of Veterans Association, Bacchus Marsh and Melton RSLs and Bunnings Melton laid wreaths at the cenotaph on High Street. School crowd funds work Lakeview Senior College students and staff will sacrifice an hour’s pay to help some of the many disadvantaged communities around the world. The school has teamed with local not-for-profit Hopes and Dreams, which works in India, South Africa and Zimbabwe. The money raised will go towards water and sanitation projects and micro-business programs in these countries. Year 11 team leader Michael Pisani said students raised more than $2600 last year, which gave more than 20 Indian women the start-up capital for their own small businesses. CCTV, alarms are hot property By Ben Cameron The home security business is “booming” as demand skyrockets in Caroline Springs, Derrimut and Burnside, suburbs’ hit by a spate of home invasions, robberies and car-jackings, a local security specialist claims. Derrimut CCTV camera and security alarm installer Rob Ribic said there has been a spike in demand for his business in recent months. Locals are spending big money on security too, with one Caroline Springs family paying
out $3500 recently, he said. Mr Ribic believes it is a direct response to home break-ins, armed robberies and carjackings in the area over recent months. “I’m living in the heart of it; I understand the fear,” Mr Ribic said. “My wife is scared; I have three children myself. It is a bit daunting.” He said the demand for extra security had come from three suburbs in particular. “I’ve been doing a fair bit of late in Derrimut, Burnside and Caroline Springs,” he said. “I was doing maybe two to three [system

installations] a month, an average week is now about two to three a week. It’s booming.” Mr Ribic said modern-day technology allowed residents to view camera surveillance 24 hours a day through their mobile phones, TV or iPad. Caroline Springs home security installer Anton said he had also noticed an increase
in demand, especially for security cameras. “There’s been a lot more people asking for cameras at their homes,” he said. “People that have alarm systems doing nothing, they’re calling to service them and reprogram them. It’s … all over Melbourne.” In another attempt to make residents feel safer, self-defence classes for women were trialled at the Derrimut and Deer Park Neighbourhood Watch at the weekend. And Watch spokeswoman Rosa Mikac said Sunshine police had agreed to conduct extra patrols in Derrimut Village at a recent Neighbourhood Watch meeting.
Graveyard hunt on A group of Melton Mormons will take part in a worldwide digital project that collates photos and information about graves. Some 20 young parishioners from Melton’s Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints will trek the municipality over the next three weeks in search of as many headstones as they can locate to photograph then upload the images onto the Billion Graves’ mobile phone app and website. Church member David Cowan said the app can help people all around the world to collect information on their family trees. “It’s particularly good because you don’t have to travel around the world to find the grave of a family member,” Mr Cowan said. “Being able to collect the records and do your family history is really important because it helps identify where we came from, who we are … and it helps us get a
better understanding of our families.” To get involved, call Mr Cowan on 0424 125 690, or download information and photos directly to billiongraves.com. Billion Graves is partners with companies including FamilySearch, MyHeritage and Findmypast, and whatever is downloaded to its website is copied to partner sites. Sumeyya Ilanbey

What’s your favourite thing about living in Bacchus Marsh? I like the hills, and the people are really friendly. I love coming over the hill and seeing that big hill over the back, and when I see that I think, I’ve come home. What else do I like? Everything; I like the fresh air, being outside. What would you change about the area if you could? I think I’d put speed bumps out the front. My husband walks the dog at 6.30 in the morning and the reason he does that is because so many people go to work at 7-7.30, and they speed. They tend to come down from the top of the [street] and when they get to the bottom they’re at their maximum speed and press the brake when they get past our house. That’s the only problem I see; everything else is great. Where’s your favourite place to hang out? I like going to the Darley Neighbourhood

What’s your connection to Moorabool? We decided Bacchus Marsh was where we wanted to live because we wanted a cooler climate and to live where there were hills. We also wanted to be within an hour of Melbourne. When I arrived, my neighbour over the road, Betty, took me to the book barn and that was my first voluntary thing. From there I met an elderly lady who introduced me to the Friendship Quilters. I joined the U3a and became secretary; now I’m the grants officer. And they were looking for someone to do desserts at the church for Monday afternoon tea so now I do that twice a month. I think I’m pretty integrated right now.

of my grandma. I always knew she was a gypsy, but I didn’t know the whole story. While I was doing the family tree, I thought, this is really interesting, I need to do a book.
You’ve written books. Which one’s your favourite? My first book, Gypsy Lullaby Lullaby. My aunty, who lives in Ballarat, gave me the story
Ms McBurnie will launch her books Gypsy Lullaby and The Two Letters at 2.30pm on Thursday, August 25, at the Darley Neighbourhood House, 33 Jonathon Drive.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir uncovers an Italian job he’s walked past for years … Bennie and I have an engagement in Altona – the launch party for a new eating place. In truth, we’re not sure how – or if – this will work for us. It’s a weeknight, with school and work the next day, and it remains to be seen whether CTS will get enough of a look-see at the food to generate a story. We get through the security cordon, stride up the stairs and find that, nope, this isn’t for us – it’s all about people standing around drinking. Bennie’s in his school uniform and we just don’t feel comfortable. This place will have to wait for another day. So around the corner we go, still chasing a feed, to throw our lot in with Pier 71 Bar e Cucina. This turns out to be an ace move on our part, as this very cool Italian has until now escaped our notice, even though it’s been around for a couple of years. It’s all about casual Italian – something along the lines of Ovest in West Footscray or Mascalzone in Williamstown – big on pizzas, pasta and salads, not so gung-ho about steaks and pricey seafood. The place is roughly split into three areas – a communal table at front, what amounts to a long hallway of both booth and table seating next to the kitchen/serving areas, and a flexible alfresco area out back. We eat very well, and find the service and timing fine for a busy mid-week night. Pizza Napoletana ($17.90) is as good as we
PIER 71 BAR E CUCINA Address: 71 Pier Street, Altona Phone: 9398 8598 could hope for – simple, very fine and expertly done. There’s stacks of anchovies – good for me, not so good for Bennie! The chips that accompany our “hamburger” (Italian style, $18.90) are superb – hot, crisp, plentiful. Fried discs of chorizo atop chips seem something of an affectation, though, and our first conclusion is that we’d be happier if that effort had been put into more heft in our burgers, which seem smallish for the price. Bennie makes rude comparisons with burgers elsewhere, but after eating I conclude he’s being unfair – because, as is so often the case, this eats bigger than it looks. And it is indeed in the “Italian style” – the meat is much more finely minced than is the case with burgers generally, be they old-school Aussie or the American style. It’s a delight with its capsicum, onion, mozzarella and sauce. We go for it in terms of indulgence by sharing the tiramisu ($10.90). It’s a dreamy, rich fantasy – much stiffer in terms of consistency than we’re used to, the booze-tinged cream a thing of grinning decadence. Service matches jobs with the people keen to start In the first 20 days of the Sarina Russo Job Access 50 Jobs in 50 Days campaign, 24 jobs have been created in the Melton region. Marlene Cassar, manager of Sarina Russo Job Access Melton, says the campaign is off to a great start because of wonderful support from the local business community. Accountantnet of Melton came on board and has employed 19-year-old Sophie Lim as an administrative assistant. Accountantnet manager Tegan Padley says the key thing she looks for in a potential employee is the right attitude, and she believes Sophie fits the bill. “Skills and processes can be taught on the job, but the right attitude is a wonderful commodity,” Tegan says. “We’re very pleased to have Sophie join our team.” Sophie says she’d been looking for full-time work since completing year 12 last October. “I’ve had some casual work with a local catering company, and as a sandwich hand in a shopping centre, but I was really keen to get a full-time job. “Sarina Russo Job Access was my designated employment agency through Centrelink,” she explains. “So I was keeping in touch with them on a regular basis. Marlene told me they had an employer who was looking for my skill set, and she helped me with
interview techniques and supported me every step of the way. “It was my first job interview, so I was a bit nervous. I was very happy to land the job and I’m looking forward to learning everything. “Right now, I answer the phone, make appointments for the accountants, do filing tasks and generally help out as needed.” Ms Cassar says key job search strategies that have helped candidates like Sophie include: • Setting specific, measurable and timely goals in their job search; • Doing research on a potential employer’s needs; • Developing a prospects list of employers; • Proactively engaging with employers. Ms Cassar encourages local employers needing staff to contact the agency because there are many experienced and skilful jobseekers looking for an immediate start. Ballan’s caring tradition The Ballan community has a long history of support for its healthcare service, starting in 1944 when the district began raising funds to establish a hospital that would provide close-to-home care and would memorialise the town’s war dead. Twenty-two years later, in 1966, the doors of the Ballan & District Soldiers’ Memorial Bush Nursing Hospital opened. With an extensive redevelopment in 2013, and now known as Ballan District Health & Care, the hospital has both public and private beds. While the hospital has grown well beyond its modest bush nursing origins, its staff members maintain a strong commitment to providing clinical excellence in an environment that fosters small-town warmth. The hospital has acute and urgent care beds, a palliative care suite, X-ray facilities, an in-house pharmacy, an in-house pathology service and a day infusion unit for patients undergoing chemotherapy. Patients can also benefit from access to Ballan District Health & Care’s rehabilitation gymnasium and a hydrotherapy pool as well as the facility’s on-site GP clinic and allied healthcare services. Residential aged care is another important, much-needed aspect of Ballan District Health & Care’s offerings. The facility provides hostel care, nursing care, transitional care and secure dementia care. Individually planned and coordinated in-home support is also available for ageing community members wishing to remain living in their own homes. Ballan District Health & Care provides Meals on Wheels, personal care, cleaning, allied healthcare, respite care, home and garden maintenance and transport support to community members needing home support. Acting Chief Executive Officer Nigel Jarvis is rightly proud of the outstanding community facility. “As Ballan’s population continues to grow, particularly as a commuter town, it’s wonderful that we can offer locals a first-class healthcare service,” he says. “Ballan District Health & Care employs 176 staff members and attracts 85 brilliant volunteers and our commitment to looking after our local community is just as strong today as it was when we first opened in 1966.” Ballan District Health Care, 33 Cowie Street, Ballan. Open 24 hours daily, with buzzer in ambulance bay for urgent, non-life threatening care. Inquiries: 5368 1100 Nurse Vikki Tetkowski

This is a cracker of a place. It’s getting billed as a great mid- to long-term investment for the block size of about 1180 square metres, which sits in a prime Rapid Growth Zone with medium-density development potential. But the house is such a winner it deserves serious attention from either larger families or those who want mum and dad in their own space under the same roof. It even has potential to produce rental income via a fairly simple reconfiguration. The large residence elicits an immediate response to its innate personality, one of generous warmth and wonderful liveability.

The décor plays on original character through contemporary treatments in paint colours, layout and updates that enhance space, light and integrity of solid bones. There are three living zones, the first a very spacious, beige-carpeted lounge-dining room with wood heater set in an exposed-brick chimney breast, and a recessed bar area lined with reclaimed barn oak; the second is a family-meals zone, the sitting area newly carpeted; and the meals area (and kitchen) with wide-format floating boards. The third, through french doors from the family area, is a charming living room
with hardwood floorboards that accesses a walk-in storage room. A bedroom (mirrored wardrobes) and updated bathroom are also in this “wing”. The appealing kitchen has abundant cabinetry in pearl-grey, a servery window to formal dining area, a big island servery bench, Asko dishwasher, a wall oven and gas cooktop. Entertainers will appreciate the second oven (underbench) and dual-drawer dishwasher in the nearby dream laundry, which comes with storage behind no less than 11 doors – and workbenches are extensive. Along with a cute little study, there are

five beautifully decorated bedrooms in another “wing”, along with a large, bright bathroom. The main bedroom has a dressing room with mirrored wardrobes, plus an en suite. Outdoor treats include a vast brick-paved sitting area, a good patch of lawn, silver birches and other exotics, a cubby house, inground trampoline and a quaint shed. There’s also a double carport with drive-through access to the backyard. It’s a real slice of Melton magic, within a two-minute stroll of Main Street. SPORT Burras brace for long battle through finals from sixth
Diggers Rest’s Kristy Blackmore was a fill-in who proved her worth. (Shawn Smits)
It was a nervous few minutes for Diggers Rest after its final Riddell District Netball League match of the regular season on Saturday. Having beaten Sunbury Kangaroos, which they needed to do, the Burras had to wait for the results of the Lancefield versus Romsey game to know whether they had made it to finals. The news came through not long after the game had finished – the Redbacks defeating the Tigers by one goal – which meant the Burras would finish in sixth, and the last, finals spot. Burras’ coach Amy Carroll said everyone was relieved to have made the finals. “It’s amazing,” she said. “Everyone was very happy and excited after yesterday. “It was a nervous few moments, and a few of the girls knew players from both teams, so they were on the phones straight away. It was a big relief. “It’s nice to play finals, and the game that we won against Macedon proved to be vital.” On Saturday, a win against the Kangaroos
was never in doubt, and the Burras were triumphant 75-21. Carroll scored 41 goals, while Meredith Ball was also busy in the ring, with 31 goals. After putting together an almost all-new team in the off season, Carroll said she knew it was going to take time for players to gel, despite outside expectations. “It has taken a whole year to get the team to gel,” she said. “Jena [Baboth] and Tayla [Behan] were away for a number of weeks. “But it’s nice to have a full squad again. “This is a good start leading into next year when we will be an even better side.” As well as Baboth and Behan coming back into the side, fill-ins Ball and Kristy Blackmore have qualified for finals, which adds even more depth to the squad. Carroll knows they have a tough run ahead of them. Their last match against a finals’ side, Riddell, was disappointing, she said.
“I think our girls need to realise they are good enough against the top teams, and can’t be intimated.” The Burras will play Rupertswood in an elimination final on Sunday at Woodend’s Gilbert Gordon Oval. “It was a good match the last time we played,” Carroll said. “I don’t think the score reflected the match. “I think we match up well against them.” Melton Centrals will play Romsey in the other elimination final. Centrals enter the match on the back of a 57-28 win against Broadford on Saturday. With a side looking closer to their full line up, the Centrals controlled the game from the opening quarter. Vanessa Seddon (39 goals) was best on court with her shooting partner, Rebecca Morabito, also dangerous. Tara Murray

Lakers all finals poise By Lance Jenkinson Caroline Springs had never played a senior WRFL final – but that was in no way apparent on Sunday. The Lakers, like seasoned pros on the big stage, dismantled Glen Orden by 109 points in the division 2 first semi-final at Dempster Park. Lakers football manager Marc Raak told Star Weekly it was a memorable weekend for his club. “We’re over the moon,” Raak said. “We got our reserves into the grand final and for the seniors to go out and get a result like that was fantastic. “We’re in a prelim now, we’re playing on a bit of confidence and we’ve had a couple of good weeks prior to this, so hopefully we can 42 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 23, 2016
go out and win one more game and be in a grand final.” The Lakers did not have it all their own way in the semi-final – but they weren’t far short of it. They had to work hard in tough conditions for a 32-point lead at half-time. A second-half blitz in which the Lakers piled on 19 goals to six quickly turned a competitive game into a triple figure stroll. Mathew Sutton (seven goals), Jason DeGabriele (six) and Brian Lake and Nathan Knuckey (three goals) feasted in the rout. DeGabriele was arguably the best on ground, starting with a dominant performance in midfield that set up the game before moving to attack to be a dangerous weapon in front of goal. “He played the first half on the ball and
had one or two goals to half-time,” Raak said. “Then we had the luxury of giving some young people the chance to go through the middle … Jase went forward. “He got close attention all day, but he just wore that off and kept going.” Caroline Springs faces a preliminary final against North Footscray at Dempster Park this Saturday. The Lakers will go in as slight underdogs, but there has not been too much to separate the top three teams in division 2 this season. “They’re always a tough opponent,” Raak said. “We’ve beaten them once this year and they’ve beaten us twice. “They are a talented side and we expect them to bounce back [from Saturday’s second semi-final loss to Yarraville-Seddon] really strong.”
It was grand final heartache for Melton Centrals in the Victorian Women’s Football League north-west division on Sunday. Having gone through the regular season undefeated, Centrals found the going tougher in finals, twice falling short against Manor Lakes. The first time was a one-point loss in a semi-final, while the grand final proved to be another close one, Manor Lakes winning 6.3 (39)-4.9 (33). Lakes got the early break, leading by seven points at the first pause and maintaining that at half-time. The margin was extended to 17 points at the last break when Centrals needed to almost double its score while keeping Manor Lakes scoreless to achieve an unlikely win. In fact, Centrals did all the attacking in the last quarter but couldn’t quite find the middle of the goals. They managed to find one goal but were otherwise wayward, kicking 1.5 in the final quarter to fall six points short. The division’s leading goalkicker, Jaime Nankiville, kicked two goals for Centrals, while Alice Masters and Tara Crisp kicked one major each. Alanna Porter, Tara McKean and Kareena Jacobsen-Logan were the best in the loss. It’s the second straight year that Centrals have lost the grand final. Last year it was to Sunbury Lions. Tara Murray

Thoroughbred moves on By Tara Murray Most of Anthony Bowyer’s Friday nights in the past 10 years have been spent on the basketball court. He first represented Melton in the Victorian Junior Basketball League competition as a nine year old, and has made his way through the age groups. Now 19, Bowyer finished up his VJBL career on Friday night when the under-20 side’s finals campaign came to an end. “It’s a good achievement,” he said of making the Melton representative team 10 years in a row. “A lot of things have changed from then to now – the way the game is played and the pace of the game. It has got a lot faster.” Bowyer said the friendships he’d made with teammates, coaches and opposition players were one of the reasons he kept coming back. He said there were times he doubted that he would make the Melton VJBL team, with players from other local clubs trying out to make the team. Not only has he been representing the Thoroughbreds in the VJBL, he still plays domestically, while also coaching and umpiring. “It’s like a big family with the basketball community in Melton,” he said. “My family has been involved as well.” While his VJBL days are coming to an end, his time with the club’s Big V program is only just starting. He’s part of the Thoroughbreds’ youth league side and this year made his debut for the senior team. “Playing Big V has been a big jump,” he said. “In youth league, they are a lot bigger and older and have more skills.”

New stirring in the grassroots Melton South Primary School Cricket Club is hoping to field junior teams this season after struggling for numbers last year. The club has previously run a successful program in the Melton Junior Cricket Association, but last season was the first time since 1992 that it failed to field a junior side. Club president Paul Davies says they’re looking to field under-11 and under-13 teams this season and start rebuilding their junior program. Davies says they’re looking for girls and boys wanting to play, with under-11s to play on Friday nights and under-13s on Saturday mornings. The matches will be at Melton Recreation Reserve. He says the club is waiving registration costs for the junior sides this season to encourage more children to play. Local businesses have got behind the push to restart the junior program, with club members also pledged to be out and about at Melton Amart Sports on August 27. On August 31, one dollar from every pizza sold after 5pm at Melton Domino’s will be donated to the club to help run the junior program. The club will also hold an information session at Melton Recreation Reserve from 11am on September 3 for interested parents and players. It’s a big year for the club whose senior sides will play in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association this season. Details: 0418 535 211

Darley facing the devil of a job Darley has made the Ballarat Football League finals despite a last-round loss to the Sunbury Lions. The Devils entered the round in sixth spot and needed either a win or Sebastopol to defeat East Point to remain top six. While they weren’t able to pull off an upset win against the Lions, the Burras did exactly that against East Point. It meant the Devils remain a game clear of East Point and Melton. If they’re to progress past the first round of finals, they will have to put in a better performance than the one delivered on Saturday against the Lions. The two sides will play in an elimination final this week. In another piece of luck, the match will be played at Darley Park. On Saturday, the Devils matched it with the
Lions in the first half before being blown away after half-time. The Devils kicked the last four goals of the game to add some respectability to the scoreline, losing 20.13 (133)-11.10 (76). Mitch Banner kicked three goals in the loss, while Leigh Spiteri and Jake Ancrum were named their best. The Lions and the Devils won’t be the only sides facing each other in consecutive weeks, with the top two teams, Lake Wendouree and Bacchus Marsh, also doubling up. In the battle for top spot, it was the Lakers who gained it with an 11.12 (78)-11.9 (75) win. The Lakers had to do it the hard way, being 15 points down with four minutes to go. They kicked the last three goals of the match to seal the win. Lachlan Phyland was the best of the goal kickers for the Cobras, with three, while Daniel
Burton was a dominant force around the ground. The result meant the two teams stayed in their positions, the Lakers first, the Cobras second. Melton’s season ended with an honourable loss to North Ballarat City. The Bloods, who still had slight finals hope, stuck with fourth-placed North Ballarat City but could never get close enough, ending up 12.6 (78)-9.8 (62). Playing coach Brad Murphy kicked six goals in the loss and was his side’s best player. Murphy has announced that he will coach on next season. The Bloods finish the season in eighth spot. Melton South had a final round bye and finishes the season bottom on the ladder, after not winning a game. Tara Murray
Jets showcase power By Lance Jenkinson The training wheels are off for two bottom-age stars of the Western Jets. The immensely talented Cameron Rayner and Lachlan Fogarty have long been heralded as players to watch for 2017, but their progress has accelerated in the TAC Cup in recent weeks as they show they’re here and now for the Jets. “It’s great to see them be able to produce those kinds of performances,” Jets’ coach Torin Baker said, noting the pair’s influence in Saturday’s heart-stopping seven-point loss to Calder Cannons at Craigieburn’s Highgate Recreation Reserve. Rayner has shown that x-factor for the Jets in the past fortnight. The 16-year-old thrived with every challenge thrown his way, in the midfield and up forward. “He’s in very good form and it’s good for him to have a couple of good games at the end of the year because he doesn’t get to play here too often,” Baker said. “He’s good in the air but he’s very dangerous at ground level as well.” There is nothing like a swag of goals to put your name up in lights. Rayner proved the previous week’s seven-goal show against Bendigo Pioneers was no fluke, putting on five more against the Cannons … 12 goals in two games and Rayner is suddenly the Jets’ leading goalkicker, but his value is not just in his finishing. The goals have been a byproduct of his ball winning ability in traffic, consistent marking on the lead and in the contest, and his defensive efforts. Rayner has only played seven games for the Jets, but has shown a well-rounded game. Fogarty has also used the past two outings to give fans a glimpse into his future. The 17-year-old been a tireless worker in both directions in the midfield. “His last two games have been outstanding,” Baker said. “His tackle pressure and work in close was fantastic today, as it was last week.” Oscar Junker, rotating between onball and half back, and Brodie Romensky, a versatile midfielder, were the other Jet’s standouts. Even with such noteworthy performers, the Jets still came up short against rivals Calder, a bitter pill to swallow as it meant the season’s ledger between the two would be split. “We beat them early in the year by two points, and they got us by a goal today, so we’ve had two really good clashes,” Baker said. This was the Jets last game of the season, but they will face Northern Knights in an exhibition match at Ikon Park on Saturday. With both the Jets and Knights missing TAC Cup finals, the league decided to give the others a chance to play matches that showcase their young stars in front of AFL recruiters. Unfortunately, the Jets will be without Jordyn Cotter, who broke his collarbone on Saturday, and captain Wilson Berry, who is doubtful after sustaining a neck injury. 44 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 23, 2016
Burras tumble as Roos fight for finals Diggers Rest’s unbeaten run in the Riddell District Football League season has ended at the hands of Sunbury Kangaroos. With top spot already secured, the Burras didn’t have much to play for in the final round of the season, while the Kangaroos needed a win for any chance of playing finals. The Kangaroos led at every break in their 10.7 (67)-7.9 (51) win but missed finals on percentage. Matthew Krul was the only multiple goalscorer for the Burras with two. Stuart Clarke, John Ryan and Michael Evans were named in the best. The Burras will face Macedon in a qualifying final on Saturday at Boardman Reserve. Melton Centrals’ season came to an end against Broadford on Saturday after a horror start to the game. Broadford led 40-0 before Centrals got going. Despite out-scoring the Kangaroos in the second and fourth quarters, they lost 13.10 (88)-6.9 (45). Michael Egan kicked four goals for Centrals and was named their best in the loss. A tough season for Rockbank came to an end as it faced a rampaging Wallan. With the Magpies needing a massive percentage boost to make the finals, the Rams were bombarded from the opening siren. The Magpies kicked 49.28 (322) to the Rams’ 4.8 (32). The score proved to be enough for the Magpies, whose percentage jumped nearly 25 per cent as they secured the sixth and last finals spot. For the Rams, Jake Warwick kicked two goals. Harley Cameron was named their best. Centrals finished the season 11th with two wins and the Rams finished the season 12th without a win. Tara Murray
Thoroughbreds pipped at post Melton Thoroughbreds’ title defence in Big V division 1 has come to an end after a preliminary final loss to Warrnambool on Saturday night. The Seahawks won through to the grand final with their 79-73 win. Having made the trip up the highway, the Thoroughbreds were slow out of the blocks and trailed by eight points at quarter-time. The slow start proved to be the difference between the sides which went goal for goal in the second and last quarters, with the Breds winning the third term by just two points. Nathan Sobey, red hot favourite for the division’s most valuable player award, was a standout for the Seahawks, scoring 34 points and being well supported by Xavier Blount (25 points). For the Thoroughbreds, Billy Feben top-scored with 15 points, while Ivan Harris (11), Shane Moroney (10) and Cameron McCallum (14 points and nine rebounds) also hit double figures. In the grand final, the Seahawks play Casey after the latter upset Blackburn, which hadn’t lost since round one. Tara Murray Cameron Rayner has produced 12 goals in his past two matches for the Western Jets. (Damian Visentini)
