More than 100 protesters turned out to Melton’s Hannah Watts Park on Sunday. (Shawn Smits)

‘Patriots’ fight each other By Sumeyya Ilanbey Anti-Islam protesters turned on each other at a rally in Melton on Sunday. Fights broke out among the 100 or so protesters which included members of far-right groups True Blue Crew, Sons of Odin and the United Patriots Front. Police moved quickly to separate the fighters. The rally had been staged to protest what the groups say is the Islamisation of Australia, after a mosque and an Islamic school were given the go-ahead at Melton, and claims that a 75-lot residential development in Melton South was ‘a Muslim housing estate’. Melton council has denied the plans represent a faith-based development.

The protesters, their faces covered by masks and flags, chanted “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie”, while carrying placards that read ‘SOS, Save our Suburbs’, ‘Say No To Sharia’ and ‘#StraightLivesMatter’. United Patriots Front leader Blair Cottrell spoke on behalf of his group at the rally, claiming the anti-Islam movement will flourish “because it lives inside of you, it’s part of your spirit”. “You media journalists, when you slander me as a neo-Nazi, right-wing extremist – I don’t fall over and stay quiet like you want me to,” Mr Cottrell said. “Because, as an Aussie, when I get hit, I’m used to hitting back. “In the future, we won’t be regarded as atheists or Catholics or left-wing or right-wing

– you’re either Australian or you’re a bloody enemy, and you can get out.” True Blue Crew member Joel told Star Weekly on Monday his group couldn’t allow “peaceful Muslims” to get in the way of his group “speaking the truth”. He said the protest groups were not opposed to Muslims, but to the Islamic ideology. “I’m well aware many Muslims want to live the Australian way of life … and they don’t

listen to the whole ideology, the legal side of things, the governmental side of things,” Joel said. Asked whether he witnessed any problems or radical behaviour in Melton, Joel said: “Not as yet.” “But we don’t want Melton becoming like Lakemba [in Sydney].” Joel said the fight between protesters was “a personal issue”. Victoria Police spokeswoman Natalie Webster said police were pleased with the behaviour of protesters. “With no incidents, injuries or arrests taking place, police would like to thank the local community for their understanding,” Ms Webster said.

Residents back patrolling streets By Sumeyya Ilanbey Neighbourhood patrols will restart in Caroline Springs, with organisers claiming crime has increased, despite police reports to the contrary. Patrols were set up several months ago after a spate of aggravated burglaries and carjackings in the area, but were stopped because of pressure from police. But after reports as many as 30 Apex gang members and associates are due to be released from jail and detention, local patrollers Rob and Matt decided night patrols needed to start

again. The Apex gang, as it’s called, is made up of young offenders from across Melbourne, who communicate their activities via texts and social media. “We monitor the Neighbourhood Watch pages on Facebook, and we sat back watching the crime increase [since patrols stopped],” Rob says. “We were a deterrent, there’s no doubt. “Everybody deserves to live in peace. Why should these thugs come and take that away?” Matt says would-be offenders don’t know who’s watching them or who’s reporting them to police.

There’s no average night for the dozens of men who are out roaming the streets, Rob says, but the patrols have been eye-opening. “There’s always something happening – people breaking into cars, smashing windows,” Rob says. “And there are lots of kids with backpacks walking around in packs … you’re thinking ‘what are you doing out at 1am?’ … and they’re not playing Pokemon.” While patrollers have been labelled as vigilantes, Rob says this is far from the truth. So what do they do when they witness an offence?

“We ring triple-0 straight out – it’s pretty much on our speed dials,” Rob says. “But we also ring each other. “If anything goes down, we’ll step in and try and stop that crime, but we mainly leave it up to police.” Victoria Police spokeswoman Sara-Jane Delaney said there hadn’t been a crime increase in the Melton area, which includes Caroline Springs, in recent weeks. Ms Delaney said while conducting street patrols was not illegal, subsequent offences could occur as a result of this behaviour.

Melton snake take extended Melton’s free snake-catching program will be extended following a successful five-month trial. Of the 24 call-outs since February 16, snakes were removed on six occasions, lizards found five times and a “very large” diamond python spotted at a Melton South address in June. Council officers told last week’s council meeting the cost of the trial was $3500 and recommended extending the trial for another 12 months. “As this program was carried out during late summer and autumn, the trial does not truly reflect the number of requests that may be made to council,” a report stated. Officers expect the 12-month trial to cost $20,000, based on about 100 requests at $200 a job. Requests will only be responded to when a resident states the snake is visible and agrees to supervise the location until the catcher arrives. “Like any program, the resident should have some responsibility to take some precautions to reduce the potential of future calls from these locations,” the report stated. “Council should not continue to provide a service if the property is a haven for snakes.” Council officers also recommended not providing a free snake-catcher service to owners of industrial properties or in rural areas. Councillors Nola Dunn, Renata Cugliari, Kathy Majdlik, Sophie Ramsey, Lara Carli and Bob Turner accepted the recommendations. Cr Myles Bentley was absent. More information: 9747 7200

Dads line up for that loving feeling Bradley Ward has one piece of advice for soon-to-be dads – cherish every moment, celebrate each milestone. Children grow so fast, the Eynesbury father says … “just enjoy it.” “It comes that quick and they grow that fast, [so] each milestone … when they clap or walk, really enjoy it.” With his three children, Tayla, 16, Campbell, 12, and Harrison, 11 months by his side, Mr Ward will be among millions of Australian dads to celebrate Father’s Day on Sunday. For him, the day will start with a special bacon and egg breakfast, followed by visits to his father-in-law and dad, topped by a relaxing evening at home. Mr Ward says while he’s looking forward to being spoiled, his favourite gifts are the sentimental ones. “Just the personal cards you get,” he says. “The kids always seem to put something in them you’ve done with them. “It sounds silly, but the cards and spending the day with the kids is the best gift. “I’ll come home and little Harrison’s face will light up – doesn’t matter what happened 10 minutes ago, when the kids come home from school, that’s worth it all.”

Women’s roles at play The Foreman is not your typical high-school drama production. Instead, it explores American politics, history and gender inequality. What would the world look like if women had been allowed in politics in the early 1900s? Bacchus Marsh College drama teacher Christopher Doughty is directing, writing and producing the school play, set in the US in the years 1908 to 1914. “The president decides that men are too compulsive to run the nation and creates a secret organisation of women who advise him on various crises,” Mr Doughty says of the play. “They’re the ones who implement prohibition, they advise him on [world] war and the Empire State Building.”

Mr Doughty says he wanted to “push the boundaries a little bit” and explore gender inequality. Sarah, 14, who is playing lead character Madam Watson, the foreman, said she was “humbled” to have been chosen for the lead role. Her thoughts on gender inequality? “I don’t look into it much but I believe men and women should be able to do everything equally,” Sarah said. The play will run from 6.30pm at the Bacchus Marsh College hall, Grant Street, from September 6-8. Tickets cost $10 and can be purchased at the school. Details: 5367 2955 Sumeyya Ilanbey

The state government announced last week it would commit $3.6 million for a therapeutic domestic violence program and sexual assault counselling at the centre. When Tracy Jones started working at the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre 16 years ago, there were 150 female prisoners. There are now 400 inmates, upgraded facilities, and some serious investment has gone into recidivism reduction programs. “Infrastructure is a big one, but also the culture of the prison has changed a lot,” Ms Jones says. “We’ve become more focused on case management systems – working closer with women and engaging more with women, to reduce the re-offending.” Ms Jones started at Ravenhall as an administration officer a week after the state government took over the state’s first privately built and operated prison, in October 2000 – four years after it opened. She is now the general manager there, and says she is always working on ways to improve the prison system. She says programs are successful, with good attendance and completion rates. “Obviously, we have women who come back to the [criminal justice] system, but for a lot of our women, if we can address their housing, mental health, drug or alcohol, domestic violence situation … and help them make better choices … we’re contributing towards a safer community,” she says. The women’s prison is one of the largest FOOD BILL employers in Melbourne’s west, with more than 300 staff. Major expansions are under way, including space for an extra 150 beds,

Africans. We have to sit down as one group and discuss what is affecting African youth … once you feel like you’re not valued, you have negative attitudes.” African Leadership Development Program founder Haileluel Gebre-Selassie said racial discrimination and profiling “to some degree” undid all the good work African leaders

have been doing in their communities. “But I think it’s a process we need to go through,” the Caroline Springs resident said. “I’m optimistic we can create good leaders who lead young people by example. “We need to increase the participation of communities by creating opportunities for them.”

Plastics not fitting the bill Melton council will investigate banning single-use plastics at council venues. Cambridge ward councillor Nola Dunn asked officers earlier this year to report on ways to promote a plastic bag-free municipality. But while bans and levies on plastic bags fall outside the jurisdiction of councils, officers told last week’s meeting they could lobby the state government to ban the distribution of single-use plastic bags, develop a policy to eliminate single-use plastic from council-owned or managed land, work with retailers to encourage a voluntary phase-out, and encourage people to cut their use of such plastics. Single use plastics include shopping bags, plastic cups, straws and packaging. “Preliminary discussions with retailers have indicated a concern that business would be affected if they were to implement a voluntary elimination of distribution at point of sale, as customers have come to expect to be provided with plastic bags,” a council report stated. “Council could assist retailers by providing advice to manage consumer concerns and promote their environmental leadership.” The report referred to a 2011 waste management strategy that found residents wanted more information about how to cut waste and boost reuse and recycling opportunities. Only about three per cent of plastic bags are recycled. Sumeyya Ilanbey

After Deruka Dekuek fled South Sudan, she vowed to help improve the lives of other African young people. “I didn’t want to see them in my shoes,” the Melton South mother of five said. “I’ve been through a lot. I’ve seen a lot during the wars, and I lost my dad when I was seven. I lived a very hard life. “But coming to Australia, I feel fortunate, I feel lucky and I want to see this young generation be successful.” Language, cultural and systemic barriers make life tough for members of the African diaspora that is an emerging community in Australia. Two of the biggest challenges facing young African people are employment and racial discrimination, Ms Dekuek, 32, says. “If I apply for a job under Deruka and also Sarah, Sarah will be [most likely] called for the interview,” she said. “There’s discrimination and most of the youth feel that way. “I’ve been working for the last 10 years and sometimes you encounter people who make you feel down, but you give them the deaf ear. “These people are young, though, and when they face discrimination they lose courage and they lose hope.” To improve her leadership skills and enhance her understanding of her community, Ms Dekuek applied for and won a place in the African Leadership Development Program, which has been running since 2010. “I have so many projects in my mind but I have to take them one step at a time,” she said. “My end target is to bring awareness to the mainstream about issues that are facing

Crashes drop but battle goes on By Sumeyya Ilanbey Crashes on Melton roads have dropped this year, but highway police say they will continue to be out in full force to reduce road trauma. There were 129 accidents, including two fatalities, on Melton roads in the seven months to August, compared with 158 in the corresponding period last year. In the same period, police impounded the vehicles of 67 drivers for various traffic offences including 27 drivers who were disqualified, nine people for exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h and five drink drivers. Of those 67 offenders, 60 were males, 21 were on

their probationary licences, three were learner drivers and 40 lived in the Melton Police Services Area. Senior Sergeant Ross Burbidge, of Melton Highway Patrol, said that while the drop in the number of crashes on Melton roads was a good thing, there were trouble spots at Gourlay Road, Caroline Springs Boulevard, Barries Road and Coburns Road and parts of the Western Freeway. He said police were targeting those roads, including the use of variable message boards. “We’re indicating to people it’s a high-collision area, but we’re still seeing some

‘‘

Serious injuries … are the hidden part of the road - Ross Burbidge toll

’’

accidents,” he said. “There’s a lot more traffic around those roads and distraction is another factor – some of those people are using their mobile phones while driving.” As part of two separate TAC-funded operations earlier this year, Melton Highway Patrol officers were out in full force on the Melton and Western highways, Senior Sergeant Burbidge said.

He believed the increased police presence helped reduce road trauma on roads. “Serious injuries … are the hidden part of the road toll,” Senior Sergeant Burbidge said. “It’s a big cost to the community and to the individuals – the effects are ongoing and some people never recover.” Roadsafe Westgate chairman Jim Giddings said his organisation received funding from VicRoads to implement road safety programs across Wyndham, Melton, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong. And while the severity of crashes are decreasing, he said “any collision is a concern”. “Driving is not a game,” Mr Giddings said.

Citywide search works For the past 28 years, Ric Brown has been behind the wheel of a truck … but he was always looking for ways out. About six months ago, the Melton man called it quits to look for something new – now he’s found a job on the drainage services team with Citywide. The infrastructure services company was recently awarded a six year contract by Melton council to maintain the city’s trees and parks, and look after its drains. A Citywide spokeswoman said the partnership created more than 70 new jobs in the municipality, with most workers living locally. Mr Brown says he loves working close to home and operating machinery in lieu of driving a truck on “rough roads”. “You can also learn a lot more on this job,”

Mr Brown says. “I’m really grateful – I’m loving the job, and everyone’s really good. “I’ve made heaps of friends.” Citywide operations leader Ray Farrell said the organisation is focused on upskilling, and multiskilling, its employees. “We’re giving them a bit of variety within the team, and more knowledge,” Mr Farrell said. Cooking fuels house fire stats By Sumeyya Ilanbey Melton residents are urged to be extra vigilant this summer after firefighters responded to 63 preventable house fires over the past year. Almost half were as a result of unattended cooking disasters, recent Country Fire Authority data reveals. Melton brigade’s officer in charge Jayson Hirt said kitchen fires were a regular occurrence in the municipality, as were electrical faults caused by overloading power boards. “People don’t realise that they’re fire

hazards,” Mr Hirt said. “And another one is [people leaving] clothing too close to heaters.” Mr Hirt said he expected this year’s fire season to be worse than the last. “We’ve had significant grass growth, and grassfires are an issue in our urban interface areas,” he said. “So with the growth, it could lead to more grassfires than the last fire season. “And cooking and overloading powerboards, doesn’t matter what time of the year, those fires occur.” Mr Hirt said numbers of preventable house fires are decreasing, thanks to greater

community awareness about the dangers. But, he said, it was sad when families lost their properties in circumstances that were avoidable. “A small fire can cause significant damage to houses,” he said. A CFA spokesman said almost half of the house fires around the state started in the kitchen, with the most common causes being unattended cooking, faulty electrical appliances or bad power distribution, and heating appliances. “Never leave cooking unattended, keep

items such as tea towels and curtains away from cooking and other heat sources, keep pot handles turned in when cooking on stoves [and] always supervise children in the kitchen,” the spokesman said. CFA and the Metropolitan Fire Brigade’s home fire safety campaign, Safe Mistake Zone, aims to raise awareness about small mistakes that can cause house fires, and what people can do to reduce the risks of fire. For more information, visit safemistakezone. com.au, and spread the message using the hashtag #safemistake on social media.

Recipes that celebrate family traditions and cultures have been published in a new cookbook. Taylors Hill Primary School pupils were invited to submit their family recipes for Melton council’s Our Kitchen Table cookbook. Melton mayor Kathy Majdlik said celebrating diversity, through food and family traditions, was a “wonderful” way to learn about other cultures. The cookbook features Melton council’s healthy eating mascot, Broc, and interesting and fun facts about food. There are some hard copies available at Taylors Hill Neighbourhood House, or download it at melton.vic.gov.au/ourkitchentable. Details: 9747 5424 Sumeyya Ilanbey

MY PLACE Val Fisher and Tania Verocchi-Penberthy are part of the Melton Singers Group. They tell Sumeyya Ilanbey about the mental health benefits of singing. V: I came out from London 16 years ago – I came straight to Melton. I love it. I also run a women’s support group at the community centre. T: I was born in Melbourne then I moved to Mildura – I lived there for about 17 years. We came to Melton … probably about 1.5 years ago. What’s your favourite thing about living in Melton? V: The community – there’s so much going on in Melton. We’ve got Woodgrove (shopping centre), doctors – everything you really need is in Melton. T: There’s everything here so there’s no need to go to the city. I didn’t realise how big Melton was until I moved here. What would you change about the area if you could? V: A hospital would be fantastic – that’s the only thing we’re missing. T: I think there used to be a hospital. V: And through the counselling I do, I know we have one psychiatrist in Melton for three hours a week. When you think about how many people there are in Melton – there are people who have mental health issues and there just isn’t the support. T: I’d agree. Where’s your favourite place to hang out in Melton?

V: When we’re singing, wherever we are. T: Our places. Please tell me about the Melton Singers Group. V: Anybody is welcome to the group. We specifically try to draw in people with health issues – not just mental health, but, you know, any sort of issues, because singing is so good for all of us. Doesn’t matter how good or bad they are, not a problem at all, as long as they enjoy singing. We go to aged-care facilities now and you see them sitting there. T: And they’re dancing. V: Even the physically disabled ones are tapping away. T: We had a lady last week who was bedridden and the carer must have wheeled her out, she had her arms up [in a hoist] and I saw her do this [clapping hands] and that’s what we love. Just seeing that from them makes it all worthwhile. What are your plans for the future? T: Still doing what we’re doing but maybe a bit bigger group. If we could get some funding, that would be fantastic. Expanding to other aged-care [facilities] and other events that might be going on in the area. We want to also stick to the Melton area. But it would be great if we had a major sponsor on board financially supporting us. The Melton Singers Group meets every Tuesday from 10am-noon. For more information, call 0418 667 150.

New grads, parents, seniors bring motivation After advertising a job, employers can face a daunting pile of applications, often in the hundreds. But, according to Marlene Cassar, manager of Sarina Russo Job Access Melton, there are three types of job applicants worth serious consideration. “New graduates, a parent returning after a career break and late-career applicants deserve a second look,” she says. “Each has particular attributes that can make them ideal employees, so we encourage employers to put them in their ‘potential’ pile before deciding on a shortlist.” The new graduate What graduates lack in experience can be compensated with fresh perspectives and knowledge of latest industry techniques. They arrive as a blank canvas and can be trained in a particular business’s house style and preferred ways of working. The parent returning after a career break This group of jobseekers offers a valuable combination of professional knowledge and life skills such as time management and good communication. They are open to part-time or flexible hours and will reward a family-friendly workplace with loyalty, which means an investment into training will really pay off. The late-career applicant Mature applicants can be a powerhouse of skills gained over many years and mentor for younger staff members. They bring the kind of communication, management and people skills that can be gained only from experience and can be particularly good in a sales role. They will bring a wealth of industry knowledge and a work ethic that’s hard to beat. “Next time an employer is faced with the task of choosing the right applicant,” Ms Cassar says, “they’re encouraged to remember that people in these categories are grateful for an opportunity and can prove to be invaluable assets in any workplace.”

Show your support this Legacy Week.

Many thousands of Australian men and women have served in Australia’s defence forces – service for which Australia is thankful. But sometimes the families of those who have served need extra help – and that’s where Legacy comes in. Melbourne Legacy president Graeme Plumridge says Legacy supports defence force families through serious illnesses, injuries or deaths of loved ones. “We currently care for about 80,000 families including widows. widowers, children and disabled dependents all over Australia,” Mr Plumridge says. Involved with Melbourne Legacy since 2008, Mr Plumridge became president in March this year. Previously he was chairman of the inner-eastern branch and was treasurer and a director of Legacy Australia. “I served in the army as a national serviceman,” he says. “I was in Vietnam for 12 months and then left the military to train as an accountant. “Dad served in World War II … when he passed away, Legacy stepped in to care for mum. I am forever grateful for the support.”

A helping hand that’s always there

Connecting and supporting widows, dependents, families and children on a social and professional basis, Legacy provides individuals and families with basic needs; advocates for entitlements, rights and benefits; assists them through bereavement; and helps people move on. “For widows, Legacy is about connecting them to the community,” Mr Plumridge says. “We have 30 Legacy widows clubs in metropolitan Melbourne and each hold luncheons and have guest speakers and special guests. “Social interaction is very important – no one can relate better to another widow than a widow.

“Legacy understands that some families may just be treading water so we pay their bills, take the kids out or offer them a njury, special family outing,” Mr Plumridge says. To raise awareness and funds for the families of incapacitated and deceased veterans, the annual national appeal, Legacy Week, will run from August 28 to September 3. “Funds raised will provide essential services such as counselling, medical, advocacy and social support.” Legacy has more than 5900 volunteers nationwide, including students, defence force cadets and service personnel.

Selling and buying a home can be very stressful so I take my time to make sure I am giving them advice and guidance like I was giving the same advice to my family. I love what I do and that shows in the response I get from my clients and also winning this award. I really want to thank each and every one of my clients for their feedback and support and looking forward to a great year ahead. SPORT Cobras strike in second half of long-awaited final Bacchus Marsh overcame some early nerves on Saturday to storm into the Ballarat Football League semi-finals. Playing finals for the first time since 2001, the Cobras were up against it early against Lake Wendouree, which had defeated them in the season’s final round. The Cobras found plenty of the ball but lacked the composure needed to match it with the Lakers. Trailing by 21 points at half-time, the Cobras still had a pulse and after the main break they kick-started their finals campaign. The Cobras were cleaner with the ball and quickly began to have an impact on the scoreboard. Four goals to none in the third

quarter brought them the lead; another five goals in the last term sealed the win. The Cobras won 13.13 (91)-7.8 (50), keeping the minor premiers to just two points in the second half. Cobras president Adam Sutherland said a lack of finals experience in the side meant nerves were on display early on. “They weren’t overawed, but there was a bit of stage fright,” he said. “The effort was there and after half-time we couldn’t have been more clinical in our effort. “We were still close enough at that main break. We knew we could compete with them; we’re one of the top teams for a reason.”

Sutherland’s faith wasn’t wasted and after half-time they produced their best football of the season. “The first half wasn’t a true reflection of the pressure we were putting in. “In just the first two or three minutes of the second half, the effort and decision-making was improved. “It was a game we knew we could win. Once we got our tails up we were able to go on with it.” Sutherland said defenders Trent Angwin and Liam Mullen were the standouts in a real team performance. He also highlighted the role of Tyson Shea in shutting down Steve Clifton.

“Everyone contributed, even if they weren’t winning possession.” The Cobras now face the Sunbury Lions in the semi-finals. A win means a grand final spot; a loss will put them into the preliminary final. “The last time the two teams met was back in round one,” Sutherland said. “It’s hard to get a read on them and it’s not like we can look back to last time. “Obviously they’re in good form and up and about. “Their form in the second half of the year is as good as anyone’s.” Tara Murray

Brave Burras burn out in final term

Romsey’s Katelyn Byron makes things tough for Melton Centrals’ Rebecca Morabito. (Shawn Smits)

Centrals go to the wire By Tara Murray Melton Centrals’ finals dream was extinguished in the dying seconds of extra time of their Riddell District Netball League elimination final against Romsey. Centrals led most of the game, but then a slow start to the final quarter cost them dearly. A four-goal three-quarter-time lead was turned into a two-goal deficit, and they had to fight their way back into the game. Centrals levelled the scores and pushed the game into overtime, but in both overtime periods were slow out of the blocks. With one last hurrah to go forward to again level the scores, Centrals fell just short and lost a thriller 55-54 Centrals’ coach Randy Pereira said it was a cracking game that lived up to expectations. “Either side deserved to win. We led for most of the game,” he said.

“We were four goals in front heading into the final quarter and I said to the girls ‘look, let’s make sure we just score’. “They scored the first six goals and it put us two goals down. “Then the girls fought back to get it even. “I look four weeks’ ago, they beat us by 20 goals … it was pleasing to turn that around.” With the game heading into overtime, Pereira could only watch as his team again started slowly. “In extra time, we let them score the first couple of goals. “I said to them before the second part of extra time, we can’t keep letting them get a start and again they got a five-goal lead, and we then came back. “Then 40 seconds to go and they [Romsey] realised there was 40 seconds to go, and they kept contacting to waste time … and that’s netball.

“We finally got the ball in the circle and the siren went.” Rebecca Morabito was her side’s best, shooting 25 goals. Jessica May and Tran Troung were also busy. The result capped off a tough year for Centrals, which struggled with players not being available. Pereira said they would look to add some new players to the mix next year. “I was proud we could turn a 20-goal loss three weeks ago to a possible could-have-been win,” he said. “Hopefully, next year, we’ll get some younger players through … and I’ve got some players in mind to bring through.” Pereira said he would like to go on next year. The Centrals’ B-grade side was also eliminated after losing to Riddell, but the C-grade side has a second chance after losing to Rupertswood.

Diggers Rest’s season is over, but it wasn’t without a fight in the Riddell District Netball League. After sneaking into finals in the final round, the task didn’t get any easier for the Burras, facing Rupertswood which had spent most of the year on top of the ladder. The Burras’ hopes weren’t helped with captain Steph Barnes missing the game after breaking her arm against Sunbury Kangaroos, while Meredith Ball was unavailable. Still, they pushed the Sharks and for three quarters the margin was about three to four goals. It blew out in the final term with the Sharks winning 50-40. Burras’ playing coach Amy Carroll said she was proud of how her side had taken it up to their opponent. “We played quite well and pushed them to be within a goal in the second quarter; it only blew out late. “I’m really proud of them. It’s the first year most of them have played together as a team. The top three sides are a bit ahead of everyone else yet we could have potentially knocked them off if we had believed in ourselves. It’s good building for next year.” Carroll was the leading goalscorer on court, shooting 25, while her goaling partner Shelby Strong (15 goals), was named the side’s best player. Carroll praised Strong, who has moved between goal and wing attack for much of the season’s second half. “Shelby stepped up as goal shooter, giving us options and a bit of depth.” Kristy Blackmore and Jena Baboth were other standouts for the Burras. Carroll said it had been a season that would help set them up for the next one. Only two of the players from Saturday’s match were part of last season’s outfit. Carroll said they had been happy with how the season panned out, despite outsiders believing they would be the big improver. “It was a bit unfair to expect that of us. The girls are all good players, but those in the Victorian Netball League have a bit more strength and experience than our team this year.” It was a mixed weekend for the Burras netballers, the B-grade team beating Lancefield, while the C-graders lost to Macedon. The B-grade side plays Macedon in a semi-final on Sunday. Tara Murray 43 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 30, 2016

Burras deliver finals mauling By Tara Murray

Spurred on by a final-round loss, Diggers Rest fired the first shot of the Riddell District Football League finals campaign. The Burras, whose only loss of the season came last week, showed more of what their fans are used to seeing in a convincing win against Macedon in Saturday’s qualifying final. While the scoreboard indicated a tight contest early on, the Burras were in control, just not applying scoreboard pressure. After half-time, they stepped up a gear as the Cats struggled with injuries and lack of personnel. A 12 goals to four second half sealed a 19.16 (130)-8.9 (57) thumping and a preliminary final spot. Burras’ coach Shaun Sims said the loss to Sunbury Kangaroos in the final round was exactly what his team had needed going into

finals. “I think the players have been waiting for a while,” he said. “The past four or five weeks we’ve been a bit in conservation mode. “I think last week was the kick they needed. Although we rested some players and played others in different positions, I think it gave us what we needed coming into the finals.” Having expected for several weeks to face the Cats in the finals’ opening round, Sims said they were well prepared for the task at hand. “I think the second half today was really strong,” the coach said. “We sort of knew what we were going to do and I think for the most part we did it well. “I felt like we were in control of the game for most of it. Even in the first quarter we were controlling parts of the play and areas of the ground, but we weren’t scoring goals. “We missed opportunities in the first half, but to their credit they didn’t drop their heads.

Our pressure stayed up and at times we moved the ball really well, which is what we’re after. “I know we can’t do that every time, but if you can do it four or five times a quarter you become really hard to play against. We’ll take that in a final any day.” Jason Williams was the star up forward for the Burras, kicking five goals in a forward line that looked more dangerous than it did for much of the season. Sims said the Burras still had Luke Smailes and Matthew Krul, out injured, who could possibly return during the finals, along with Sean Egan. The Burras now face Broadford in a semifinal at Rockbank on Saturday, with a grand final spot on the line. Sims has sounded a warning to his players. “Broadford’s last 10 or 11 weeks has been as good if not better than anyone else.”

Lakers fire up for finals Caroline Springs has emphatically dispelled any question marks over its ability to get the job done in blockbuster matches. In the past month, the Lakers have brutally beaten all of the other top-four sides, to the point that even the tipsters may be swayed into selecting the third-ranked finalist in this Sunday’s WRFL division 2 grand final against Yarraville-Seddon. The Lakers crushed minor premier North Footscray by 70 points in the preliminary final at Dempster Park on Saturday. They have beaten Glen Orden twice in three weeks, including a 109-point shellacking in the elimination final, and rounded out their home-and-away campaign with a 76-point annihilation of Yarraville-Seddon. It’s the kind of form that has favouritism written all over the Lakers, but it’s also hard to look past Yarraville-Seddon, which finished above the Lakers in second position on the ladder and edged the head-to-head battle in the regular season. Lakers football manager Marc Raak said the club’s form was “spot on”. “We’ve played good football for four weeks,” he said. “We have a lot of respect for Yarraville-Seddon and both sides match up well on each other. “We just need to bring our A game and hopefully that’s enough to win it.” Caroline Springs is breaking new ground as a club. The Lakers had never played in finals, let alone won one, before this season. To be playing off in the big one is something the Lakers have worked towards for six years.

Daniel Backus fires a hand pass out of the pack for Caroline Springs. (Damjan Janevski)

“We’re rapt to be representing Caroline Springs in our first grand final, not only in seniors but reserves as well,” Raak said. “We’ve taken the steps to get to the top, while some teams have taken the elevator.” Caroline Springs hardly put a foot wrong in disposing of North Footscray. It started with the Lakers’ defensive approach, which kept the Devils score-less in the first quarter.

Matt Chapman was nigh on impassable at centre half-back. Whenever he was breached, Blake Richard would mop up at full-back. David Cavanagh played like his life depended on it on the half-back flank. Cavanagh was the Lakers’ first ever senior captain and has flagged retirement at the end of the season – but he is hellbent on going out on a high. Tristan Xerri stood up to the pressure of finals football for Caroline Springs. The young

Lions give Devils hell of a time Darley’s grand final defence came to an end in the first week of Ballarat Football League finals. The Devils snuck into the finals in sixth spot, but faced the Sunbury Lions, which had easily defeated them the week before. And the Lions looked well on track for a big win … until the start of the third quarter. After Tim Hill received a yellow card, the Lions should have started the second half with 17 players on the field, For the first 34 seconds, there were 18 Lions on the field. With the expected penalty to be the loss of any points scored in the third quarter, both teams played as though the margin was less than the scoreboard showed. Then the Devils scored the first three goals of the last quarter, and were just seven points behind the Lions with their third quarter points deducted. The Lions responded though, kicking away to win 15.13 (103)-7.11 (53). 44 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 30, 2016

Darley’s Steve Kennedy tries to evade Sunbury’s Tom Donoghue. (Shawn Smits)

The final margin is likely to be cut once an investigation into the Lions’ extra player is completed. Jake Ancrum kicked three goals in the loss, while Leigh Spiteri and Mitch Banner kicked two each. In his last game as coach, Jarrod Edwards was best in the loss.

12320695-CG35-16

centre half-forward/ruckman has spent most of the season as a bottom-age player with the Western Jets, but returned to the Lakers in time for a premiership push. Full-forward Mathew Sutton put the icing on the cake for Caroline Springs with eight goals. With 75 goals, Sutton will finish the season as the leading goalkicker in division 2. Lance Jenkinson
