A flag, and history, in the bag There were wild celebrations after Caroline Springs claimed its first senior premiership in the WRFL on Sunday. The Lakers led for most of the game before claiming their 14-point win over Yarraville-Seddon in the season decider. Ruckman Lewis Tudor was awarded the Rex Swann Medal as best-on-ground, while Springs sharpshooter Mathew Sutton kicked five goals. It means the Lakers will be promoted to division 1 next season – and a currently listed AFL player could be along for the ride. ■ Full story: Page 41
Scars of a hit-run horror By Sumeyya Ilanbey Stacey Matthews was cycling in Toolern Vale last year when she was knocked off her bike in a hit-run incident. A year on, the 26-year-old is still recovering from her injuries which included a broken neck, back, jaw, collarbone and arm; displaced teeth; a collapsed lung; degloving to the arm; and a split left leg and knee. Melton highway patrol’s Senior Constable Holly Gibson described the October 3 incident as “disgraceful” and “cowardly”. She said police had a number of suspects but were appealing to the public for more information to “fill in the last few pieces of the puzzle”. Ms Matthews was cycling south-bound on the Gisborne-Melton Road, near the Diggers

Rest-Coimadai Road intersection, about 12.45pm on October 3 when she was hit by a car, described as a white VT or VX Holden Commodore. “There was a car coming straight towards me basically,” she says. “I looked at the driver and he was not slowing down. He was coming at speed towards me [so] I had to make a decision to try and avoid a collision. “I pulled my brakes on and pulled into the road to try and avoid hitting the car, but he was coming way too fast.” Passersby, including an off-duty police officer, firefighter and nurse, pulled over to assist Ms Matthews, who had been flung 30 metres. Police have said the driver of the car, a Caucasian man in his 20s with a shaved head and tattoos on his neck and arm, veered onto the wrong side of the road before hitting Ms
Matthews. The car was seen driving erratically in the Melton and Brookfield areas shortly after the hit-run. Senior Constable Gibson said the car was likely to have damage to the passenger side front bumper, windscreen and side mirror. “This is a classic example of what we believe is a driver impaired by drugs or alcohol and it’s a classic example of what can happen to an innocent person going about their day-to-day activities,” she said. “My message to the driver is: hand yourself in before we come looking for you,” Senior Constable Gibson said. She said police we’re expecting to make an arrest soon. Ms Matthews’ recovery is ongoing. She regularly undergoes rehabilitation and physiotherapy and hopes to return to work for Stacey Matthews at the accident site. her first full day this week since the accident. (Sumeyya Ilanbey)

Carjackings, home invasions face full force of law Home invasions will carry a maximum penalty of 25 years’ jail, while an aggravated home invasion will carry a minimum non-parole period of three years. Home invasion is when a person, with others, commits a burglary while armed, or when there is someone in the house. The new laws introduce an element of “strict liability”, meaning it is irrelevant whether the offender knew that someone was home at the time, or not. Aggravated home invasion charges will apply when there are at least three armed offenders, who commit a burglary on premises where
someone else is present. Carjacking offences will carry a maximum penalty of 15 years’ jail, while those convicted of aggravated carjacking could face a 25-year prison sentence. A statutory minimum non-parole period of three years will also apply to aggravated carjackings. Carjacking is when an offender, or offenders, use force, or threaten to use force, to steal a vehicle. Aggravated carjacking is when the offender has a weapon, or they injure another person during the offending. Police Minister Lisa Neville said while carjackings and home invasions aren’t

Initial attempts to contact Mr Wittmer failed so the department turned to Facebook to find Bear’s owner. “We found out Bear’s owner, Rob, is currently away in Canada, but he, and the entire family, were over the moon that their pet dog had been found … seven years later,” Ms Walsh said. “We made arrangements for Rob’s brother, Raymond, to come to Darley to collect Bear. “He and Bear were both excited to see each other, and we’re thrilled to have reunited Bear and his family.” Raymond Wittmer said Bear was “happy as Larry catching a ball at the park”. “And when Rob heard Bear was found, he was really happy, he was ecstatic,” Mr Wittmer said. “He was calling me and messaging me from Canada, wanting a photo and a video of him, so I sent him some of those.” Mr Wittmer said Bear seems to be in good health. “My reaction? A bit of disbelief, really. I mean … we didn’t expect to see him again, let alone after seven years.”

Concerns have been raised about Melton and Moorabool teenagers accessing medical treatment at government schools without parental consent. Melton Secondary College, Kurunjang Secondary College and Bacchus Marsh College are among the 100 schools selected by the state government to have a general practitioner visit once a week. Students will be able to get referrals to specialists and identify their health needs early. The state government hasn’t decided if, and how, parents will be involved. Premier Daniel Andrews said criticisms about parental involvement were not valid as students could already see doctors at bulk-billing clinics. Mr Andrews said that under the Doctors in Schools program, students could get help before their medical concerns started affecting their studies. “Happy, healthy and resilient students learn better, stay in school longer and achieve more,” Mr Andrews said. “We know young people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, are the least likely to see a GP so putting doctors in schools ensures these kids have the access to healthcare they need.” But the opposition accused the government of “undermining” parents. Education spokesman Nick Wakeling said the program could “alienate” parents from the health of their children. “This is an example of Daniel Andrews thinking he knows better than parents when it comes to the education and health of their children.” Melton MP Don Nardella said the program would give students access to reliable healthcare and reduce pressure on local GPs.
Two-year-old Bear went missing in 2009, and the Wittmers had given up hope of finding him. After searching for the blue Staffordshire bull terrier for months, Rob Wittmer and his family thought they would never see their dog again. But seven years on, Bear was found in Ballan late last month – 130 kilometres away from his Kinglake home. Moorabool council’s community safety officer Shannon Walsh said when Bear was dropped off at the council’s pound she made inquiries about his microchip, which listed him as ‘missing’.

common, they are “appalling crimes”, which take a “huge toll on their victims and communities”. “The community expects that police will have the powers and resources they need to target these criminals – and that’s exactly what we’re giving them.” Police Association secretary Ron Iddles said this new legislation should be backed up by “significant” increases to police numbers to prevent and detect these types of crime before they occur.

Armed home invasions and carjackings will be upgraded and harsher sentences given out under new crime laws introduced into State Parliament last week. People charged with aggravated carjackings, home invasions and aggravated home invasion offences will be automatically remanded, regardless of their age, and will face sentences of up to 25 years in jail, after the new laws come into effect. The new legislation will amend the Crime Act 1958 to define the new offences of carjacking, aggravated carjacking, home invasion and aggravated home invasion.

Western BACE has got backing to help small business operators develop digital marketing skills. The business incubator has been given $50,000 to create a Digital BACE Marketing Makerspace, part of the state government’s $60 million LaunchVic initiative. The funding will be used to familiarise local start-ups on how, and when, to use 3D printing, virtual reality software, computers and cameras for marketing. Chief executive Mark Corrie said he hopes the initiative will pique the interest of local businesspeople and manufacturers. He said the new strategic marketing concept could become a blueprint for economic development. Marketing Entourage and BlueChilli will partner with Western BACE to deliver the marketing sessions. Marketing Entourage co-founder Sam Hurley said creating a digital BACE will “upscale the capacity of businesses” in the region. Small business, innovation and trade minister Philip Dalidakis said the LaunchVic funding would help make Victoria a preferred IT location for start-ups throughout the Asia Pacific region. “Victoria is leading the country in start-up and small business growth, with about 8000 new businesses created in the last year alone,” Mr Dalidakis said.

A $30,000 upgrade to the Bacchus Marsh courthouse will free up frontline police, and give security guards a new line of work. Melton MP Don Nardella announced last Friday the registry counter at the courthouse will be upgraded to provide more security for staff. He said security guards, trained specifically in courts and tribunals, will be hired, and will use hand-held scanning wands to detect weapons. The guards will also patrol the court grounds and provide escorts for domestic violence victims and others – a job usually done by police. The upgrades are among 227 recommendations of the Royal Commission into Family Violence, which called for Victorian courts to be upgraded and more secure. Mr Nardella said the upgrades at Bacchus Marsh would start soon and be finished mid next year, with security guards due on the job about the same time. “This will release the police from the security work and doing their police work,” Mr Nardella said. “And the registry will have an upgrade to make it more secure for the registrar.” While details of the work haven’t been announced, Mr Nardella expects the wooden counter to be replaced with one that includes a glass screen. “This upgrade to Victorian courts is about improving the safety for the workers, the people using it, and the police officers,” Mr Nardella said. The heritage-listed Bacchus Marsh courthouse was built in 1859, and has been hailed as one of the most intact examples of a

Tough fire season looms: Lapsley By Sumeyya Ilanbey A delayed but intense fire season is predicted for the west of the state following the wet winter. The 2016 Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC outlook predicts forested areas to the west of Melbourne will dry out in late spring after above-average rainfall this month and next, and a high probability of above average temperatures. “This could see rapidly escalating fire behaviour later in summer,” the report predicts. Emergency Management Victoria Commissioner Craig Lapsley said fire
preparations would need to focus on western and central Victoria, including urban interface areas. He said while the fire season is not likely to start until December, fires are expected to be more intense and to spread faster. “Even when you’ve done cutting your grass in spring, there could be regrowth because of higher than average rainfall,” Mr Lapsley said. “What they [landowners] do in late October and November, they should also do it in late December and January.” The average maximum temperature at Melton in spring will be 19.8 degrees Celsius, the Bureau of Meteorology is predicting.
BOM predicts warmer than average days are likely until November throughout the country. Mr Lapsley has advised Melton and Moorabool residents to clean their yards and remove anything stacked against buildings. “There’s a tendency to bring wood to the back of the door … what you need to do is move that wood stack away from your house. You want to get rid of fire fuels, the things that will burn,” Mr Lapsley said. “In the Wye river fires, there’s evidence in that report that we conducted with the CFA and CSIRO to say it was the things you’ve got some control over – trampolines, rubbish bins, woodstacks, piles of rubbish –
that fuelled the fire,” he said, urging people, councils, government agencies and businesses to work together to build safer, more resilient communities. “Grass fires can start unexpectedly,” Mr Lapsley warned. “They are fast-moving and can have significant impacts. We need to make sure we are prepared this summer. “Victoria is a bushfire-prone area, and we will continue to experience significant fires. “What’s important is how we plan and prepare for this, how we respond and make the critical decisions, and how we build resilience so we can more easily recover.”
Prose in perfect precis Christine Mackley knows the power of a short, evocative sentence. The Gordon woman has won several short story competitions, now one of her works – a 1500-word story Fair Fight – will be published in this year’s national anthology Award Winning Australian Writing 2016. “[With] a novel, you can get away with a few things here and there not being right, because you’ve got all those other words that can make up for it,” Mackley says. “But in a short story, every word has to be there for a reason.” She said short story writers need to think about the five senses, and how to evoke an emotional response, with each sentence. But the most important tip she can give to budding writers is: “Get other people to critique your work”.
“Even accomplished writers need other people to read their work,” she said. The best way to do this is by joining a writers’ group, Mackley says. She says she spent weeks working on Fair Fight to perfect it. “I threw the idea out there, but I needed to do a lot of hard work – that was tough for me. It didn’t come naturally. So it’s really nice to be published.” Award Winning Australian Writing 2016 was launched last Wednesday. It is available at bookstores or at melbournebooks.com.au. Rowsley hotspot calmed By Sumeyya Ilanbey Roadworks to rid Rowsley of a collision hotspot have been completed. As part of upgrades to the intersection of Bacchus Marsh-Balliang and Glenmore roads, a new roundabout, signs, lighting, drainage and guardrails have been installed. The federal government contributed $1.3 million to the project from last year’s Blackspot program. Moorabool council infrastructure manager Phil Jeffrey said there had been a number of accidents at the intersection in the past five years, including one fatality and another resulting in serious injuries. Mr Jeffrey said council was given the green light to upgrade the intersection because of its accident history.

“We were awarded funding for three projects, but this was the bigger of the three,” Mr Jeffrey said. “Previously, there was a staggered T-intersection. It’s been converted to a roundabout – roundabouts have been recognised as one of the premier safety treatments of these types of intersections. It has a crash reduction factor.” Mr Jeffrey said accidents at the intersection occurred, generally, when cars failed to give way. He said, over the past few decades, there had been several minor accidents along the road. “The upgrade has been well-received in the community – we’re happy.
Mayor Allan Comrie and Cr Tonia Dudzik at Rowsley. (Joe Mastroianni)
“It’s a busy road and we’re happy we received funding and fixed a problem site,” he said. Moorabool mayor Allan Comrie said the road had been “a very dangerous corner” for many years, and the upgrade would be good news for drivers. “It’ll mean safety … it’ll allow people to lower their speeds while going through,” Cr Comrie said. “It’ll be fantastic.”
As part of its Blackspot program, the federal government has also invested $419,000 in upgrades of the Lerderderg Gorge Road, from Camerons Road to Bacchus Marsh-Gisborne Road at Darley. It will also spend $272,000 to improve the Clarendon-Blue Bridge Road from Courts Road to Woolshed Road at Clarendon.

Men stand up against sexism Men must stamp out even the smallest acts of sexism and gender bias. That was a key message of Shoulder to Shoulder, an insightful seminar run by inTouch – Multicultural Centre Against Family Violence – last Wednesday. The Visy Cares Hub was packed as a six-man panel fielded questions from about 100 people on issues and discriminatory attitudes towards women. Justice for Nikita Chawla spokesman, Nikita’s brother Tarang Chawla, called on all men to be fearless in calling out sexism, at the pub, with mates or at work. “Act in a dignified way, in a way we would want ourselves to be treated,” he said. “Question why there isn’t an equal [gender] representation on The Footy Show, for example. Question and critically Show analyse these everyday examples of small sexism as part of a larger social problem.” Asylum Seeker Resource Centre founder Kon Karapanagiotidis said Australia needs more male leaders. “It costs nothing to use the language we use, with your privilege as a man, to create spaces [for women],” he said. Health West project manager Cuong La said domestic violence was often incorrectly framed as a “cultural issue”. There were also insights from construction industry worker James, who said gender inequality in his work had been “disgusting”. Ben Cameron

Werribee officer in shoot drama By Adem Saban The Werribee-based police sergeant involved in the fatal shooting of a 23-year-old man in Tullamarine in the early hours of Friday morning is expected to make a full recovery from the injuries he sustained. Four shots were fired at Guelah Ahokava, of Deer Park, after a 40-minute police chase ended with the sergeant being pinned against a Tullamarine factory by a car. A Victoria Police spokeswoman has confirmed the sergeant was based at Werribee and is expected to make a full recovery. Friends and family members took to social media on the weekend to pay tribute to Ahokava. One posted: “I’ll never forget you brother, I’ll always remember the times we had good sparring matches. You are the best. Still in shock. Missing you already.” Another wrote: “I know if you were here you’d say to stop crying and smoke up.” But it wasn’t all positive, with many taking to social media to post vitriol against the police. Others took aim at the deceased on his personal Facebook page. One user wrote: “I guess crime doesn’t pay.” Another posted: “Thug life fail.” Two men have been arrested and charged following the incident. An 18-year-old Deer Park man has been charged with 17 offences, including five counts of burglary, one count of attempted burglary, seven counts of theft of a motor car and one count each of criminal damage by fire, dangerous driving whilst pursued by police, reckless conduct endangering life and commit indictable offence while on bail. He was remanded in custody to appear in the Sunshine Magistrates Court on September 20.

FOOD REVIEW
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir treks the west to find eateries in unusual places … Ethnic India is located on the Golden Mile at Hoppers Crossing, in one of the light industrialcommercial precincts that are offshoots of it. When Bennie and I arrive for our Sunday lunch, I get a surprise. I’d visited on my own several months previously for a quick look and lunch. At that time, I reckoned Ethnic India must have been easily the biggest Indian restaurant in Melbourne, taking up a whole warehouse. Through the use of screens and such like, efforts had been made to separate the restaurant space from the bar, functions rooms, kitchen and so on. But, basically, it was a huge space. What Bennie and I find is quite different. The proprietors have pretty much created a building within a building – all the same facilities remain, but they are much more strictly defined. They include a restaurant space that is the typical flash of some Indian places – including tall-backed chairs so lavishly cushioned that, upon sitting, you feel like you are sinking almost until your chin rests on the table. On this day, there are heaps of guests arriving for a catered birthday party out back, but we are the only restaurant diners. The very long menu is presented on both sides of two wooden paddles. We proceed to enjoy a fine light lunch. Onion bhaji ($8.50) are less like the Indian-style onion rings we are expecting and more like pakoras.
ETHNIC INDIA Address: 4/2-6 Kilmur Road, Hoppers Crossing Phone: 9369 4133 They’re good, though, and nicely moist. We take two of them home for Bennie’s school lunch the next day. Cholle bhature is also very good, if a bit pricey at $15 for a snack-style offering. The chickpeas are excellent – they seem fresher than is often the case with this dish, and are mildly spiced. The breads are a tad oily, but hot and fine. The price is ameliorated somewhat by the $15 deal including a salted Punjabi-style lassie. I think the mostly uniform biryanis we eat in and around West Footscray are of the Hyderabad kind. The Ethnic India lamb biryani ($15) is a significant contrast. All is different for us – the seasoning (mild chilli levels); the colour; the inclusion of many currants, cashews and green capsicum; lamb chunks not on the bone – most welcome! There’s a hefty serve of raita on the side to complete a solid offering. Ethnic India is well worth a try – and parking is a breeze. The art of smart questioning Employ the right interview techniques when recruiting and you’ll save time, energy and money, according to Sarina Russo Job Access Melton manager Marlene Cassar. “We’ve developed a 10-point plan to help employers get the right staff,” Ms Cassar explains. “But the first piece of advice is to be open-minded and not rely solely on what’s in a resume. Until you meet the person, it’s hard to gain the complete picture. “And, because employers usually look for a short, sharp resume, it’s not always possible for an applicant to include everything that makes him or her a good worker.” Ten-point plan for employers in the interview process: 1. Follow the 80/20 rule. Get the jobseeker to do 80 per cent of the talking. The person asking the questions and listening is the one in control of the interview. 2. Ask open-ended questions beginning with ‘what’, ‘how’, ‘why’, ‘when’ or ‘where’. These encourage the jobseeker to do most of the talking. 3. Avoid closed questions beginning with ‘did’, ‘would’, ‘do’ and ‘are’. These questions can be answered ‘yes’ or ‘no’. They don’t encourage the jobseeker to talk. 4. Ask probing questions. These typically begin with ‘tell me more’, ‘describe to me’ and ‘explain to me’. 5. Use the power of silence. Pause while waiting for an answer. 6. A jobseeker’s past job performance is the surest guide to their future performance. 7. A good job fit is finding someone with the right education, the right experience and a compatible personality. 8. Beware of the ‘just like me’ trap. Focus on the job requirements and the candidate’s qualifications.
Hog’s Breath Cafe Woodgrove manager Rohit discusses interview questions with Marlene Cassar. 9. Help the jobseeker feel at ease at the start of the interview. This will encourage them to open up and speak more freely. 10. Don’t make assumptions. Look for repeat patterns of behaviour to draw conclusions about the jobseeker. “A well-constructed and conducted interview benefits both
parties and has the best chance for an informed recruitment decision to be made,” Ms Cassar concludes. For a list of jobseekers relevant to your business or industry, visit www.sarinarusso.com/localjobs Sarina Russo Job Access Melton, 262-266 High Street, Melton. Inquiries: 13 15 59

With flawless presentation and space for three separate living zones and outdoor options aplenty, this house of about 40 squares will capture plenty of attention. Creamy lemon wall paint, white trims, off-white floor tiles, beige carpet, and windows dressed in a mix of white roman blinds, lace and roller blinds provide a furnishings-friendly backdrop. the extra-big main bedroom, which has a walk-in wardrobe and an open en suite with dual vanity basins and an enclosed toilet. Another bedroom is along the hall, while two more bedrooms (each with a wardrobe, one with chandelier) are down another tiled hall, as are the laundry and main bathroom. An open lounge room (with chandelier) is opposite, with an island wall painted the same rich cherry colour found on the facade’s portico; a glass slider opens from here to a paved side area rimmed with pretty gardens, where a fountain, clumped
lavender and tropical plants put on a show. Before the huge central hub opens up, there are double doors to a carpeted dining room, which could also serve as study or fifth bedroom. The kitchen has a stack of blonde timber-look cupboards topped with charcoal laminate, an angled island bench, glass splashback, Asko dishwasher and 900mm underbench oven and gas cooktop. The hub links with a slate-tiled, enclosed sunroom accommodating a six-person spa, and two sets of bifolds then open to a

SPORT Lakers show no sign of nerves in grand final win Caroline Springs will take its place among the WRFL’s elite next season after earning promotion to the top-flight with a 14-point win over Yarraville-Seddon in a hard-fought grand final at Avalon Airport Oval on Sunday. The Lakers had never experienced grand final football in their six-year history, but they showed no signs of nerves as they made all the right moves to open up an early 29-point lead late in the first quarter. Five Lakers goals were on the board – three to boom forward Mathew Sutton – before Yarraville-Seddon got a foothold in the game through a time-on goal to Scott Krakouer. The Eagles turned the game into more of a scrap, which suited their contested-ball style. But their early dominance in the second term appeared to have come unstuck when Caroline Springs went against the run of play to find key forward Brian Lake 20 metres out for a set shot he would slot 99 times out of 100. But Lake’s shot skewed to the right and Yarraville-Seddon took full advantage, punishing the miss with the next four goals of the game to take the lead. Chris Topalidis was the spark for

He was dangerous any time he went near the ball inside-50 and setting the tone with his defensive pressure. Lachie Longmire and Macauley Goring, two Eagles down on their usual output in the first quarter, sprung to life in the second.
After being put under pressure for most of the second term, Jason Degabrielle goaled against the run of play for Caroline Springs. After getting the first goal of the third term through Krakouer, Yarraville-Seddon huffed and puffed inside their forward 50 for little return on the scoreboard. The Lakers made them pay, kicking the next two goals of the arm-wrestle. Young ruckman Tristan Xerri and Rex Swann Medal winner Lewis Tudor began dominating the air. Jerome Caterino was also becoming a significant factor for Caroline Springs, with his sprint away from the contest a feature. Sutton’s fourth goal gave Caroline Springs a handy, but not insurmountable, 14-point three-quarter time lead. If Yarraville-Seddon was to mount a comeback, it had to happen early in the fourth. Instead, Lake stretched the lead out to 20 for the Lakers, then James Ryan made it 28 on the run. Goring rallied the Eagles through a tough goal from 45 metres out, then Kevin Upton’s persistence and willingness to continue to
A flag won the hard way By Lance Jenkinson It was a slow climb to the top of the mountain for Caroline Springs in WRFL’s division 2. The Lakers struggled early as an expansion club but showed gradual improvement each season to suggest it was a venture destined to succeed. For a club that entered the finals in third position, faced cut-throat games all post-season and had never tasted victory in a finals series let alone walk away with a flag, this will be viewed as a rapid ascent for the Lakers to get their hands on that elusive premiership cup for the first time. “We’ve grown every year. We’ve taken the steps and haven’t taken the elevator,” Lakers football manager Marc Raak told Star Weekly. “We were on the end of some beltings early on – 200-point losses and so forth – but you forget about them when you win a premiership.” Caroline Springs never hid its ambitions. The Lakers made a number of key recruiting moves in the off-season, including snapping up Brian Lake hot on the heels of an AFL premiership with Hawthorn. Lake was unveiled with fanfare at a local shopping centre. It was a partnership that has worked out brilliantly for both Lake and the club, and it looks set to continue next season. Lake is strongly favouring a return to Caroline Springs for its first season in division 1, and he could bring with him great mate and former Western Bulldogs teammate Adam Cooney, who announced his retirement at Essendon recently. “He’s [Lake] indicated to me that he’s going around again,” Raak said. “The good news is we also may get Adam Cooney to play a handful of games. He’s shown a bit of interest in playing with Brian as they’re close mates. I’m not saying it’s done, but we’re in negotiations with him.” Faced with incredibly tough opposition in minor premiers North Footscray and second-ranked Yarraville-Seddon, it was always going to be one hell of a fight for Caroline Springs to get their hands on the holy grail. Those three stand-out teams played musical chairs at the top of the ladder for most of the season, but something just clicked into place for Caroline Springs at the right time. The Lakers were one of the hottest teams in the competition for the second half of the season, but a 61-point belting from North Footscray in round 17 brought them back to earth with a thud and cast doubts in external

minds over their validity as a premiership contender. That setback seemed to spur the Lakers, who drew a line in the sand from that point on, proceeded to whack Glen Orden by 120 points and built some momentum before the finals. They accepted their home-and-away ceiling would be third spot and were not intimidated about having to go through three suddendeath games in the finals to get coach Scott Korczynski and captain Chris Bestall to stand on the premiership dais. “We actually started
to believe about six or seven weeks ago that we had a real crack at winning this,” Raak said. In post-game speeches, both Korczynski and president Dean Ellis spoke of Caroline Springs being written off in the weeks leading up to the finals, almost taking satisfaction in proving the doubters wrong. It could be Ellis’s last go around as president of Caroline Springs. It would be an incredible way for the inaugural president to go out, having led the club to promotion to the top flight for the first time.

present paid dividends with two goals in five minutes. The Lakers’ lead was down to nine points. But that was as close as Yarraville-Seddon would get. Sutton kicked his fifth for the day, sparking wild celebrations among the Caroline Springs supporters. Lance Jenkinson
Winless Rams taking bull by the horns Rockbank intends to build on the work it’s done in the past 12 months as it contemplates the 2017 Riddell District Football League season. The Rams finished without a win but know they’re in a better place than 12 months ago. The club spent this year looking to build its culture on and off-field and, with Gavin Sporle set to step down, it has advertised for a new senior coach. Sporle said his decision would enable him to take on a more hands-on role off-field, and he would stay with the club as football operations manager. “I’m stepping down as coach because we’re in the perfect position to capitalise on the work we’ve already done. Someone needs to take on the off-field role and I’d like to do that, but I’ll go around [again as coach] if we can’t find someone to build on the culture we’ve set in place.” Sporle said of the coaching role: “We need someone who can help the club grow, who can maintain the culture and coach the whole club. We need a leader from the top down.” Sporle said they would look to start re-signing the current playing group in the next couple of weeks. “From initial discussions I’ve had with the players, I think most will stay. We’re in a lot better spot than 12 months ago and can add some young talent to the list now, but we’re not going to try and recruit using money. We want young players who want the chance to play senior football.” The club also wants to re-establish an A-grade netball side and junior football program. The Rams had neither this year. Sporle said they aimed to have at least two junior sides next year. “The under-14s and under-16s are our target and we think we can get them up. Having had Auskick this year, we’ll possibly push for an under-10s side in the next couple of years. We’re opening it up for every group.” Tara Murray 41 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 6, 2016

Cobras vow to finish the job By Tara Murray Bacchus Marsh is through to its first Ballarat Football League grand final since 1999 – but the Cobras aren’t satisfied with just making the biggest game of the year. They have been the competition’s big improvers this season, coming from outside the top six last season to being the first team through to the grand final. On Saturday, they were clinical in dismissing the Sunbury Lions in the semi-final after an impressive second half against minor premier Lake Wendouree the week before. Cobras president Adam Sutherland said that while they had exceeded pre-season expectations, they now believed they could go all the way. “We’re really happy, but not satisfied,” he said. “We know we’ve made the grand final, but we haven’t won anything yet – it’ll be a hollow feeling if we don’t win. “We’ve played one bad quarter for the year … it’s been a remarkably consistent year.” On Saturday, the Cobras jumped out of the blocks to leave the Lions shell-shocked. The Cobras kicked the first seven goals of the game and lead 42-1 before the Lions even looked like kicking a goal. Having got off to a hot start, the Cobras were able to hold the Lions at bay for the rest of the first half. When the Lions reduced the margin to 13 points in the third quarter, the Cobras found another level and got the game back on their terms.

Kicking the last four goals of the game, the Cobras won 21.12 (138)-14.6 (90). While the Lions generally start well, Sutherland said the Cobras thought they could surprise them early on. “To be honest, I thought we had two hard-fought matches [against minor premier Lake Wendouree] in the lead-up and that we were match hardened, I thought we could catch them off guard.” Sutherland said the response in the third quarter, when the Lions were coming at them, was just as good the earlier efforts. Jarrah Maksymow kicked seven goals in a best-on-ground performance, while Damian Cupido kicked five goals. The jobs done by Logan Blundell and Daniel Burton to shut down the Lions’ two most important players were also vital. “We had no doubt Burton would do the job for us [on David Kovacevic],” Sutherland said. “Logan also shaded [Alik] Magin – a couple of 21 to 22-year olds doing the job.” The Cobras will have the week off before facing the Lions or Lake Wendouree in the grand final. Sutherland said making the grand final was reward for effort that had been put in over a number of years. The club’s reserves were knocked out in the semi-final, while its under-18.5s will play in a preliminary final on Saturday. “There’s been some hard yards and a lot of people put in the work for no reward,” Sutherland said. “If you keep doing the right things – hopefully good things happen.”

Mustangs show their mettle in penalty shoot-out
Melton’s Narelle McMillan lunges into her shot. (Damjan Janevski)
It was a thrilling end to Melton’s semi-final against Monash University in the opening round of Hockey Victoria women’s Vic League 2 finals. The two teams couldn’t be separated at the end of the do-or-die semi-final, with scores locked at 1-1, leaving it to penalties to decide the winner. In the shoot-out, the Mustangs scored three goals to one to take the win and advance to the preliminary final. Co-coach Ron Shadbolt said it was the first time the side had played in a penalty shoot-out, and there were a few nervous people watching from the sidelines. “Monash were in front in the first half, and then we won the second half,” he said. “Our defence got on top, and it was very exciting.
“David [Gorton] the other coach just said to the players to play as you would in practice. Whatever the result, it doesn’t matter, just be positive.” The side will now play WestVic Hockey this weekend for a spot in the grand final. Despite not beating WestVic in the regular season, Shadbolt said Melton would go into the game with confidence. “We beat them in the pre-season, but they’ve had the wood over us,” he said. “The last couple of times, we’ve had players missing with injuries. I’m hoping this coming week it will be more even.” The reserves will take on MHSOB this weekend, also in a preliminary final. They lost to Monash University 3-1 in their semi-final. Shadbolt said three years of hard work had
come to fruition to get both sides into finals. The top side didn’t make it last year. “This is really three years of hard work. We didn’t have a competitive reserves side and, at times, sacrificed the senior team,” he said. “Now there’s really little difference between the two sides, just experience.” It was a good weekend for the Mustangs with both senior and reserves men’s teams also winning their Hockey Victoria men’s Vic League 3 finals. The senior side will play Bayside in a preliminary final, while the reserves moved through to the grand final. The club’s mixed under-14 side, including some girls playing in the reserves side, will play in a grand final on Friday night. Tara Murray

“If we’d had to play this weekend, a couple of prepare for the grand final. Is this the year of the Burra? Riddell District Football League fans will know in two weeks after Diggers Rest won through to its fourth successive grand final. Clearly the best team all season, the Burras enter the final decider as the team to beat. But they’ve been here before, and have lost the past three. Burras coach Shaun Sims thinks they have a better squad than last year when they lost by 10 points to Romsey. Sims said the outside run added by Michael Evans, Cale Morton and Taylor Hine had complemented their inside game. “Ultimately, the goal is putting yourself in a position to be in a grand final and we’ve done that,” he said. “Our game style has changed and we’ve brought in some guys who make us better. The players we already had have got better, too.” In Saturday’s semi-final against Broadford, the Burras left their best till after half-time. It was a similar story against Macedon the week before in the qualifying final. Last Saturday, the Burras kicked the final eight goals to win 15.18 (108)-5.9 (39). Sims said turnovers were the story for his side in the first half. “It was a bit of a grind through that half,” he said. “Broadford’s bigger bodies made it tough … We had 20 turnovers in the first quarter and a fair few in the second. Once we cleaned up disposal we played on our terms.” The Burras benefited from Broadford being a player down after one was sent from the field. “Tom Gleeson stopped them going forward every time,” Sims said. “It wasn’t about them scoring, more about us being able to counteract.” Burras’ Cameron McCabe starred up forward, kicking five goals, while Brandon
