It was a celebration 62 years in the making, and the sons and daughters of the west did not disappoint. More than 20,000 fans descended on the Whitten Oval on Sunday to celebrate after the Bulldogs claimed their first VFL/AFL premiership since 1954 with a stirring 22-point win over Sydney. While many were nursing sore heads after a night of revelry, nothing was going to stop the party as families from all over Melbourne sung and danced their way down Sutton Parade and into their spiritual home to welcome their premiership heroes to the stage. Comedian and banner writer Danny McGinlay summed up the mood of the crowd from the main stage. “This is the most awesome day ever,” he said. One by one the team were presented to the throng, the biggest cheers reserved for spiritual leader Bob Murphy, who missed the game through injury, and coach Luke Beveridge, who had delivered the Dogs to the promised land in just his second season at the helm. Beveridge heaped praise on his side when it was suggested he must have Jedi powers. “The players are Jedis, the Force is with them,” he insisted. Ewen McRae

Crime rise a ‘safety crisis’ By Sumeyya Ilanbey The ‘thin blue line’ has been so stretched it’s only a matter of time before it snaps, the Police Association has warned as statistics reveal Melton’s crime rate increased by more than 20 per cent in one year. Aggravated burglaries in the Melton Police Service Area, which includes Caroline Springs, increased by more than 40 per cent to 91 in the past financial year, according to recent Crime Statistics Agency data. The 13 per cent increase in Victoria’s crime rate prompted the opposition to label it a “crime tsunami”, and the police union dub it a “community safety crisis”. In the past financial year, property damage offences in Melton rose by 20 per cent,

burglaries and thefts by 16 per cent, and weapons and explosive devices offences by more than 25 per cent. At the same time, domestic violence incidents jumped by 8.7 per cent. Meanwhile, overall crime in Moorabool increased by 15 per cent, to 2300 incidents. Police Association assistant secretary Bruce McKenzie said the large spike in crime was further evidence that Victoria was in “desperate” need of more frontline police. He said Victoria Police’s focus on specialised taskforces was failing, and unless the government and senior command “stopped burying its collective head in the sand and urgently increased frontline police”, it would only get worse. “If they continue to do nothing, then we can

only expect law-abiding citizens in our state will continue to be condemned to the same outcome, if not worse,” Mr McKenzie said. “Something’s got to give and it must happen urgently.” Deputy Commissioner Andrew Crisp said while there had been an increase in aggravated burglaries across the state, less than two per cent involved violent confrontations. While he said he understood the community’s fear, Mr Crisp said Victoria Police had ramped up their responses and arrested more than 185 people as the work of specialised taskforces. “Our members are working hard, they’ve never worked harder,” Mr Crisp said. But Mr McKenzie slammed Victoria Police’s “broken resourcing model”, which focused on identifying crime trends once the trend

occurred in lieu of prevention. “We’ve heard far too much spin about special taskforces,” Mr McKenzie said. “The crime stats emphatically show they’re not working. “The reality is they rob police stations of their ability to prevent crime by providing a proper visible policing presence which not only the community craves, but is actually proven to work in preventing crime.” Premier Daniel Andrews told a press conference the increased crime rates were a “very challenging set of … statistics”. “They are right across the community and have a profound effect on people in every part of our state.” Opposition policing spokesman Edward O’Donohue said the “whole justice system, from A to Z”, was broken.

Maternity funds win for hospital By Sumeyya Ilanbey The Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital has received funding to improve its fetal monitoring systems and maternity services in the wake of the baby death scandal. Forty-six Victorian public hospitals will share in $1.4 million as part of the state government’s commitment to “strengthen” maternity services following an investigation into the hospital that found there were 11 preventable baby deaths between 2003 and 2014. According to an auditor-general’s report tabled in Parliament earlier this year, senior

clinicians raised concerns about the hospital’s capacity to manage its maternity services years before an investigation was launched. But the many red flags – including professional competency issues and concerns demand for maternity services was outstripping clinical capacity – were ignored, by the health department because of “internal communication” problems that “resulted in fragmented responses”, according to the auditor-general’s report. Health Minister Jill Hennessy announced last Thursday that the Bacchus Marsh hospital would receive $28,000 to better train and equip

doctors, nurses and midwives. She said the state government was “doing everything” it could to ensure Victoria’s maternity services were safe. “It’s crucial that hospitals continue to train and develop their staff so they have the skills they need to better monitor women and their babies before giving birth,” Ms Hennessy said. A Bacchus Marsh hospital spokesman said there had been “significant investment” since last year’s investigation to ensure the hospital could meet current and future demand. “Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital achieved full National Safety and

Quality Health Service Standards accreditation earlier this year,” he said. “And we have engaged in extensive staff development under the leadership of chief executive Andrew Freeman, his talented team and the dedicated staff. “New senior clinical practitioners have joined the service and contributed extensively to improving standards of care, safety and systems. “The new clinical governance framework now in place at Djerriwarrh Health Services gives assurance of a safe, secure and fully functioning service.”

State title not so remote now The nimble, flying thumbs that serve young texters well have brought success to a Hillside remote-control buggy racer. Eleven-year-old Jordan Isergin took out the 2016 Victorian state title for remote-control buggy racing at the Keilor Off Road RC Track on September 25, beating a field of men at least twice his age. Jordan knew the many jumps of the Stadium Drive dirt track intricately, having trained there twice a month in the lead-up to the event. The Southern Cross Grammar student was

over the moon with the result against more than 20 other competitors, handling the jump up from the junior class to the senior division earlier this year with aplomb. “Sunday was the best day of my life,” he said. “Racing was delayed [at Keilor] for a few hours due to heavy rain the night before. However, the track came up awesome. “It feels so good to be the Victorian state champion.” Jordan’s latest performance follows a second placing at the New South Wales state titles in the 4WD division.

A member of Melbourne’s Chaouk crime clan feared for his life and started crying after accidentally shooting himself in a testicle when reaching for cigarettes in his pocket, a court has heard. Omar Chaouk shot himself in the groin and right testicle outside the Caroline Springs home of a female associate in the early hours of March 17 last year, the County Court heard last Tuesday. Prosecutor Catherine Parkes told a plea hearing that after shooting himself with the handgun, Chaouk asked the woman “if he was going to die, and started crying”, before she and another man drove him to Sunshine Hospital. Chaouk was arrested the following day and charged with being in possession of a gun while a prohibited person. He was also charged with the theft of two cars and a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, which he stole after asking the respective owners if he could take the vehicles on test drives, the court heard. Chaouk has pleaded guilty to the firearm offence, three counts of theft and single charges of armed robbery, breaching bail, unlicensed driving and dealing with the suspected proceeds of crime. Chaouk, 25, a son of murdered crime patriarch Macchour Chaouk, was fuelled by drugs when he stole the cars and motorbike between January and March last year, after telling the owners he was interested in buying them, the court was told. Judge Murphy remanded Chaouk in custody to return to court in December. He has spent more than 560 days in custody since his arrest. Adam Cooper, The Age

Melton top for home buyers Average house prices in Melton are almost $220,000 less than nearby Rockbank, which is only 10 kilometres away on the same train route. New Real Estate Institute of Victoria data reveals the average house price in Melton is $218,000 less than in Rockbank. REIV chief executive Geoff White said that while Melton was deemed more affordable, he expected house prices in affordable growth suburbs such as Melton to increase as the state and federal governments committed to infrastructure funding. He said many buyers were looking at opportunities to enter into the property market at prices they can afford while still being connected to a V/Line service to Melbourne. “Many of these areas, especially towns within commuting distance of the city, are also recording solid annual price increases and are poised for future growth,” Mr White said. Public transport links are a “traditional” driver of buyer interest and price growth, according to Mr White. He expects house prices from Melton to Deer Park to increase considerably once the Ballarat railway line is duplicated. “Any major infrastructure projects – be it rail or road – that assist local home owners normally support price growth,” Mr White said.

“The projects draw buyers towards these areas as they look to leverage the benefits of better access, and potentially reduced travelling time, delivering real benefits to these local communities.” YPA director Shane Spiteri said the Melton market was “just booming” at the moment, with Sydney investors snapping up properties in the municipality.

Many outer western suburbs residents are selling their $600,000 properties to buy in Melton, according to Mr Spiteri. “What you’re getting here is value for money,” Mr Spiteri said. “This is the hottest market Melton’s ever been in.” Domain chief economist Andrew Wilson said Melton’s affordable status, and the recent infrastructure investments, were appealing to home buyers. “Train transport has a premium status in Melbourne,” Dr Wilson said. “It’s always been regarded as premium … It’s been a strong year for the Melbourne market. “As prices rise, this pushes buyers out to places where they can afford.”

Council pushes CFA Ballan base By Sumeyya Ilanbey The state government has been urged to compulsorily acquire land in Ballan for a new CFA facility amid concerns authorities are looking to build the facility elsewhere. Moorabool council has written to Emergency Services Minister James Merlino, Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley and the CFA board to ensure the “critical community facility” remains in town. Following the permanent closure of the CFA firefighter training centre in Fiskville, the state government announced it was committed

to building a new site in Ballan, which is 10 kilometres north of Fiskville. However, Star Weekly understands authorities are looking at sites near Parwan and Bacchus Marsh to build a new firefighter training facility. Moorabool council says building the facility in Ballan is “critical” to securing jobs and providing economic benefits to the town. The controversial training site was closed last year after chemical residue was found in water tanks used for firefighter training. The site has also been linked to a cancer cluster. A spokesman for acting Emergency Services Minister Lisa Neville said Fiskville’s closure

ended a “dark chapter” in the state’s firefighting services. He said the state government had committed $46.2 million for new training facilities, including one in the Central Highlands region, covering Ararat, Ballarat, Golden Plains, Hepburn, Moorabool and Pyrenees shires. “The CFA is in the process of identifying a site in the region that suits the needs of modern firefighter training,” the spokesman said. He would not be drawn on when an announcement would be made or if the state government could reassure the community a training facility would be built in Ballan.

A CFA spokesman said it was continuing to “work on identifying” an alternative training site in the Central Highlands. Ballan resident Ben Hatfield has started an online petition calling on residents to support a new facility in town. He said the community had not only been “deeply” affected by the health and environmental impacts of the facility but also by its permanent closure. “In the latest blow to the Ballan community, the proposed new CFA training ground looks set not to be located in the Ballan area,” the petition states. Family’s urgent lessons It was at the family dinner table just two years ago when Hillside mother of four Laura thought her then five-year-old son, Kelly, had died. Kelly suddenly started convulsing and fell against his brother, Riley. “We thought he’d died,” Laura says. “He convulsed for about four minutes then just lay there. The ambulance people were really good, really quick. We had the whole street in our house.” Kelly, like brother Riley, was diagnosed with epilepsy soon after his collapse. Laura came to learn there’s a degree of shame that comes with epilepsy, but for her, the best way forward has been to be up front and honest with everyone, especially her boys’ schools. “A lot of people don’t want to tell others they have it [epilepsy],” she says. “Mum said to me, ‘Don’t tell anyone’, but I said it’s not the way it

is these days. It’s not one of those things you can keep quiet, and the school needs to know.” Riley, now 12, would suffer up to 100 seizures a day without medication, lasting around 10 seconds a time. Caring for two epileptic boys has been expensive, with the family needing a $1600 bed alarm – which detects movement at night – for Kelly as well as $300 anti-suffocation pillows, and medication, which creates “extreme hunger”. “You’re always on guard,” Laura says. “They can actually die in their sleep. They can seizure and they can’t stop seizing. It’s extremely dangerous. Let the waterways flow Lyn Holdsworth used to drive past the Toolern Creek thinking how “disgusting” it looked. It was overgrown, with weeds and rubbish lining the bed of the creek that runs near the Western Freeway. That was nine years ago – before the Melton woman founded Friends of the Toolern Creek and enlisted the help of others to start tackling the “wasteland”. Toolern Creek has now been completely transformed, with indigenous grass and shrubs planted along its banks and a wildlife corridor developed. A few years ago, Federation University students even spotted platypuses, Ms Holdsworth says.

And it was from then the idea for a Platypus festival grew. “It’s a day for local groups to come along, so they can show what they’re doing for Melton,” Ms Holdsworth says. “We’re so lucky to have such magnificent waterways in one small town. Other places – Essendon, South Yarra – don’t have waterways like we do in Melton.” The Platypus Festival will run from noon until 4pm, on Saturday, October 8, at the corner of Tamar Drive and Raymond Street, at Melton South. A footy club with no oval By Sumeyya Ilanbey Welcome to Eynesbury Eagles Football Netball Club – where membership is growing, but training conditions are “neglected”. Club president Heath Pritchard says players train on open parkland with no lighting or goalposts, which limits training times to once a day between 4.30pm and 5.30pm.

Home ground matches are played 12 kilometres away, at Rockbank, and equipment is stored at people’s homes because there aren’t any storage facilities on site. “It’s just frustrating,” Mr Pritchard says. “We see new facilities getting built at other places … but we seem to be neglected out here. “We’re doing our bit as a community to encourage sports, but this makes it very hard.” There are currently 80 AusKick players, with numbers steadily growing. And, at this rate, there won’t be enough nights in the week to keep using the park, Mr Pritchard says. “It also means the park, which should be for residents to sit around and enjoy, is being used as a footy training ground.” Mr Pritchard says the youngsters want their own training and home grounds. And, while the quality of coaching or playing isn’t diminished because of the lack of facilities, residents are also becoming frustrated. “With all of the promises so far, nothing has come to fruition,” he said. Melton council recreation and youth manager Adrian Burns said there were two ovals and

a pavilion, with tennis courts planned for the township as part of the Eynesbury masterplan, which will be delivered by the developer. “Development of recreation facilities at Eynesbury is the responsibility of the developer of the estate – as per the development agreement, facilities will be provided when set numbers of lots have been sold,” Mr Burns said.

“The development has yet to reach these trigger points for the provision of facilities,” he added. Mr Burns said only “passive” park and street lighting was available at the park, with recreational activities allocated space in a public play area. The park, he said, was a playground, not an oval.

Grants at hand for flood repair Melton and Moorabool residents affected by last month’s torrential rainfall and flooding are being urged to apply for federal government funding. Victorian senator Scott Ryan said the Natural Disaster and Recovery Arrangements funding would help local residents recover from impacts of the floods. The State Emergency Service responded to eight incidents in the municipalities between September 12 and 23. Celebrate our seniors When Carole Doyle retired in 2000, she never planned to idly sit around. The 68-year-old says she’s always enjoyed being involved with the community, meeting new people and helping those who are in need. And despite her long-list of to-dos, the Melton woman says she still has time for all the things she loves – gardening and socialising. “I like to be involved,” Ms Doyle says. “I’d rather do that and give back to the community rather than sit at home.” Ms Doyle is the Victorian ambassador for Dogs for Young Diggers – an Zucchinis initiative that provides assistance dogs to returned servicemen and women with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). She helped establish the Melton branch of Partners of Veterans, and has also received the ANZAC of the year award in 2015 for her work raising awareness for PTSD. What’s your connection to Melton? I’ve grown up here and the Melton Uniting Church is one of the many places where I help out. I’m also an active operational member of the State Emergency Service in Melton and I do other volunteering work at the church. What’s your favourite thing about living in Melton? The good thing about Melton is it’s a great community. We have a lot of good people and it’s a, sort of, urban and rural mix, in between a country town or city suburb. Melton is not too far if you want to go into the city or want to go out to the nice waterfalls in the countryside. What would you change about the area if you could? A few more facilities for the public to use maybe – more parks and things for people to be able to do to keep active. Where’s your favourite place to hang out in Melton? That’s Hannah Watts Park; it’s big enough and has a few places for you to walk around. I like the scenery … nice trees and the creek, when there’s water in it. How did you get involved with the Melton Uniting Church Op Shop? I was a member of the church when I was born. They were asking for volunteers to help at the Op Shop one day and I put my hand up to be a volunteer. I got up through the ranks to where I am today; that was at least five years ago. I had a bit of spare time at the

Hooning, drugs, speed still rife By Charlene Macaulay Sixteen people were killed and more than 900 injured on the west’s roads in the past financial year. RoadSafe Westgate’s annual report shows that of the injury and serious-injury collisions across the Westgate division in 2015-16, more than a third took place in Wyndham (332), followed by Melton (236), Maribyrnong (182) and Hobsons Bay (179). The 2015-16 Westgate division road toll was 16 killed and 913 injured, while in 2014-15 the numbers were 17 killed and 987 injured. Among the 2015-16 fatalities was a driver whose car burst into flames after it crossed double white lines and struck another car head-on on Dohertys Road, Laverton North. The driver died at the scene. RoadSafe Westgate, a road safety advocacy group with programs across Wyndham, Melton, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong, said while inroads were being made to the local road toll, more needed to be done. Chairman Jim Giddings said RoadSafe Westgate had been proactive in getting the road safety message out via workshops and billboards targeting L-platers, P-platers and senior drivers. “The challenges of road safety issues are still there,” he said, “but by bringing our local communities on board we will continue to drive changes, including legislative changes, to meet their expectations.” The annual report says speed, hoon driving, and drink and drug driving remain the

greatest contributors to road trauma, but driver distraction offences, including using mobile phones behind the wheel, are on the rise. Hooning remains a major problem in Wyndham, with 226 cars impounded over the 2015 calendar year, and 128 cars impounded in the first six months of 2016. Between January 1 and June 30, 2016, 65 cars were impounded in Melton, 29 in Hobsons Bay and 27 in Maribyrnong. Wyndham also recorded the highest ratio of positive breath tests, with one in every 511 drivers tested returning a positive result. On the flip side, highway patrol units recorded a decrease in drivers caught speeding in every area, with speeding offences dropping by almost half in Wyndham and Hobsons Bay.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir explores the new menu of an old favourite Two Bros On Blyth at Altona has morphed from agreeable neighbourhood cafe into something much grander. A second storey has been added, a much larger downstairs kitchen installed. There are two menus in place – breakfast/ lunch and dinner – and a good deal of thought and creativity has been put into both. Lunch runs to such attractive options as smoky spice rub chicken wings with bourbon BBQ sauce ($15 for half a kilo, $24 for a kilo), pulled pork and beef melts ($15), and Reuben and Cubano sandwiches ($16). But we’re here for dinner … the upstairs dining room is not ostentatious, its hanging greenery and roomy feel makes a pleasant, tranquil space to dine. The only downside we find is that our table is too small for the multiple dishes we order, and which arrive simultaneously. We order one entree, two sides, one of the big sharing-for-two mains, and a dessert. With a couple of non-booze drinks and a coffee included, the bill comes to a few bucks over $100, which I consider good value. The service is fine. Lamb ribs ($16) are excellent, and much more meaty than other versions I’ve eaten recently. The impact of the salsa verde is negligible, but the mild, tasty chilli concoction also included fully compensates, and the cumin seasoning on the meat itself is ace. Hand-cut chips ($7) are good, though there is only the scantest trace of the listed “togarashi

Broccolini with toasted almonds and preserved lemon butter ($7) takes care of the veg. The dinner menu features three big, meaty share dishes – for two, the pork shoulder and brisket; for three or four, the whole braised lamb shoulder. Our pork shoulder with chipotle adobo and coriander sports a heavy layer of fat – which I like a lot. The tender meat and its marinade/sauce have a beguiling fruitiness and make a nice change from some of the drab pulled pork offerings that have come my way in recent years. One of our trio grumbles a bit about the $48 price tag, but I figure that this dish is listed as a share deal for two, and that $24 per person in that context is fine. Chocolate brownie ice-cream sandwich with hot fudge sauce ($12), looks a bit messy on the plate – and gets much messier very quickly. There’s no denying the intense pleasure to be had from the brownie’s crunch, the black-flecked vanilla ice-cream and the sticky sauce. India: land of chaos and colour A few expert tips will help you enjoy this challenging but magical country, writes Nina Karnikowski. India is everything, and more, all at once. It’s a visual explosion of bright saris, lumbering cows, marigolds and bursts of sunlight. And while Mother India, with her 1.2 billion inhabitants, can inspire, astonish and enlighten many who tread her soil, her innumerable challenges and chaotic madness can also overwhelm and exhaust unprepared first-timers. Or even put them off completely. After living in Mumbai and travelling throughout India for seven months last year here are my essential survival tips to ensure you don’t waste a second on your first visit to this magical country.

The basics

So how long for your first trip? A lifetime, if you’ve got one to spare. If not, a month would be ideal to make the most of each place you visit. At a stretch, you could get a taste of India’s magic in two weeks. Allocate two nights at least for each place you visit and, as always, the longer you stay in a city the more you’ll be able to cosy up to locals who can give you their hot insider tips. As for money, you’ll be dealing in Indian rupees - there are about 55 rupees to each Aussie dollar. Credit cards are widely accepted, but make sure you know all your pin codes as signing has been phased out around the country. And take advantage of the baggy clothes you’ll be wearing by using a money belt without worrying about any embarrassing bulges.

just donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to risk it. Avoid ice, eating fresh fruit juices and salads and street food, which can look tempting but usually isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t worth it. Even if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re fit and healthy, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d be a fool to travel to India without comprehensive health insurance. Make sure your vaccinations are all up to date, pack a full medical kit (include Probiotics and Travelan, both good for healthy gut flora, plus some general antibiotics as prescribed by your GP), and do take a truckload of hand sanitiser to keep those mitts fresh.

How to stay safe

The numerous assaults on women in India recently have been well publicised, but by

taking a few precautions female travellers can definitely travel safely. Women-only rooms or floors are on offer in a few big Indian hotels including the ITC group of luxury hotels (itchotels.in), and the Indian tourism ministry has called for this to be standard across hotel categories. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll need to prepare for being stared at â&#x20AC;&#x201C; more blankly than lecherously â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best to avoid curious gazes since returning them can be considered flirtatious. Dress conservatively (loose ankle-length pants or skirts, tops that cover your shoulders and shawls), and avoid travelling alone during festivals when thick crowds can be used as an

excuse for a pinch or a grab.

How to get around

In big cities, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s auto rickshaws and taxis all the way. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re getting a taxi from an airport to your hotel, organise it from the pre-paid counter inside most terminals, or risk being scammed. Trains are notoriously overcrowded and run down â&#x20AC;&#x201C; theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re fine for short trips and economical, but not recommended for overnight travel since safetyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not at a premium. Ditto for overnight sleeper coaches. A great option is to hire a car and driver, particularly if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re travelling within one state

for a few days. Indiabycaranddriver.com is a reputable company offering everything from old-school Ambassadors to SUVs and mini coaches.

Where to stay

When it comes to Indian accommodation, you can spend as little or as much as you like â&#x20AC;&#x201C; from $2 to $2000 a night and beyond. Budget options are generally OK, but mid-range is where you get the best value for money, though youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll find the luxurious five-star hotels of the Indian-owned Taj group (tajhotels.com) to be world class. - The Age

Kilmore led for the first three quarters and looked like they were on track for the win but the Bulldogs hit the front late in the last quarter and kicked away to seal the premiership. For the Burras, it was their first grand final in more than 10 years. The first quarter proved to be the difference, with the Cats kicking out to a 34-6 lead at the first break. The Burras kept in touch for the next two quarters, before the Cats scored three goals to one in the final quarter to ensure the premiership. Bacchus Marsh imports signal new era Bacchus Marsh is hoping its strongest ever pre-season will help put it in the mix with other contenders for the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup. The Bulls, who flirted with relegation last season before finishing sixth – one of the closest seasons in McIntyre Cup history – hope not to be in the same situation this season. Steve Charles, who has been at the club the past couple of seasons, has been appointed senior coach, and has already made an impact. The club’s Peter Lalor said Charles had focused on getting the playing group fit, so it can play out games a lot better. “He came to the club about two years ago,” Lalor said. “He was at Hoppers Crossing and had a range of coaching positions across the western suburbs, and he has experience operating in large clubs. “He had good success there, so our committee approached him to take over.”

Lalor said the players had brought into what Charles is doing and there is more commitment from players. “Last season was probably a wake-up call for the younger players,” Lalor said. “The relegation word popped up, and it had never popped up before. “We’ve got a personal trainer in to get the players fitter and stronger … Steve is very fitness focused. “Last year, we had two to three players out [for] a lot of weeks, and it can affect results,” he said. “Hopefully, we won’t have the same issue this year. We’ve really focused on professionalism.” Baker will stay on to captain one of the club’s lower grade sides, made up mostly of younger players looking to continue their development. The Bulls have added to their playing list, signing at least two new players, who are likely to come straight into the McIntyre Cup team.

They have signed two Sri Lankan players – fast-bowler Madushanka Ekanayake and wicketkeeper-batsman Milinda Sepala. Ekanayake represented Sri Lanka at a national level in the under-19s. “We were looking to add a bit more excitement, and looked at bringing an English player over,” Lalor said. “Most of them want to play on turf, and we knew someone involved in the Sri Lanka community. Madushanka will be involved in junior development. He has arrived and shown plenty of enthusiasm.” The Bulls managed to keep most of the existing playing group, and now have a bit more depth for this season, which starts on Saturday, when they host reigning premiers Gisborne in a one-day match. Little Aths takes big leap By Tara Murray Melton Little Athletic Centre athletes have extra spring in their steps this season after the club moved to a new home base. Their new track at Bridge Road sports precinct gives Melton-based athletes access to top-class facilities, and means they won’t have to move to other clubs to further their careers. Previously, they’ve had to rely on facilities that weren’t up to the standard of other top-class tracks in their region, and the state. The $11.3 million precinct redevelopment includes a new synthetic athletic track, which opened in July, along with two hockey pitches. Melton Little Athletics club secretary Aimee Orr said the new track was a major boost for the centre, which will celebrate its 50th birthday in a couple of years. “It’s a completely new venue and an all-weather track,” she said.

“There’s jumping pits with proper runways, javelin and pole vault set-up, and cages for hammer-throw, shot-put and discus. “The clubrooms are amazing.” She said the club hopes the facilities will attract new athletics to the centre, while keeping those who would normally move on elsewhere. “We have seen over the last few years that kids with talent have left, as they have had no other choice,” she said. “Some had to go, as they had to go for an all-weather track, which we didn’t have. They can’t just train on grass. “Then when they went well, their new club would get all the credit, and Melton would get no credit at all.” The new little athletics season starts on Sunday, with the club holding a massive season launch to coincide with the action getting under way.

Orr said they are hoping that the number of Australian athletes recording personal bests and making finals at the Olympics will help attract new children to athletics. “The season launch is the first one like this we’ve held,” Orr said. “There’ll be a jumping castle, fairy floss, face-painting, a smoothie bar and popcorn machine. We’ll have Bob the Builder and Dora the Explorer there. “Our first week of competition will be on,” Orr said. “Parents and kids are welcome to come see how they like things.” Orr said children would have the opportunity to try different forms of athletics to see what’s on offer and what they like before signing up. Competitions are held each week on Sundays, with many athletes competing in regional events, and state events later in the season. Sunday’s open day starts at 1pm.
