Cops at ‘breaking point’ Police in the north-west are so “hamstrung” they’re putting more jobs on hold than they are attending to because of a lack of staff and resources, according to one senior sergeant. And unless Victoria Police immediately bolsters frontline police numbers, he says crime rates and officers’ mental health will only deteriorate. The north-west senior sergeant, who wanted to remain anonymous, told Star Weekly that while Victoria Police was doing “everything it can” to address members’ stress and fatigue, the underlying issues weren’t being tackled. “One of the biggest stressors is the workload,” he said. “The organisation needs to do something about the workload – and that means we need more police. “In terms of having additional police to help you do your job, it’s the worst I’ve seen. The guys are as full as a fat lady’s sock.” His concerns have been echoed by more than 80 per cent of senior sergeants across the state, who have reported many jobs “regularly” go unattended. In a damning senior sergeant opinion survey, conducted by the Police Association, officers said public safety was being compromised and the community put at risk because of under-staffing. According to the survey results, a quarter of priority jobs were “regularly held” for more than an hour. The north-west senior sergeant said he and his colleagues were “quite startled” by the survey’s findings.

“I’ve been with Victoria Police for [about} 30 years and I sort of hoped that this was just the bottom of the cycle,” the senior sergeant said. “And I sort of hoped that [senior command] would wake up and they would see we’re really short in people and redress that by sending people from elsewhere. And I’ve realised that hasn’t happened because there aren’t any police.”

The Police Association last Wednesday called for an extra 3300 frontline police in the next six years. On Thursday, the state government announced it would move to fast track by a year the deployment of more than 400 officers, including 300 first-responders. Police Association secretary Ron Iddles said that while he welcomed the government’s commitment that showed “it is listening and finally recognising we are in the midst of a critical resource crisis”, short-term commitments were not enough to fix the problem. Police Minister Lisa Neville said the state government had provided $26.2 million to expedite use of the 406 police. “We aren’t wasting a second in making sure Victoria Police has the resources it needs to cope with growing demand for police,” she said. Another 21 police officers and 20 Protective Services Officers graduated from the police academy last Friday, and are expected to hit the streets this week.

Retail therapy helps wildlife Naomi Carr has nursed hundreds of animals at the Greendale Wildlife Shelter. But it’s an expensive process and the shelter can’t exist without the support of animal lovers, Ms Carr says. “We rely 100 per cent on donations and we go through a lot of money for special formulas and things like that.” A fundraising shopping tour of Melbourne’s CBD has been organised with a portion of store purchases to be donated to the shelter. A shoppers’ bus headed to 12 CBD stores leaves Melton Civic Centre, 232 High Street, at 7.30am this Saturday. Tickets cost $42. As well, a wildlife rescue training session will be held on Saturday, October 29, from 9am-6pm, at Greendale fire station, Prince Street. Training costs $40. Details: 0448 888 859. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Report calls for cop shop axings By Sumeyya Ilanbey Police stations in outer suburbs should be merged and new courts built in growth areas to address the challenges facing the justice system, according to Infrastructure Victoria’s draft 30-year blueprint. It recommends closing smaller stations and creating as many as 24 police “supersites” with “greater emphasis” on crime prevention. The independent body has made a suite of infrastructure recommendations to the state government, including introducing a new police phone line for non-urgent calls, enabling

cases to be diverted from courts and developing case management computer systems to be rolled out across the criminal justice system. The draft report also states courts should be built in “high-growth metropolitan areas, such as Melton” over the next five to 30 years. Infrastructure Victoria chief executive Michel Masson said the recommendations addressed the challenges faced by police, courts and the justice system. “The draft strategy recommends that justice facilities – such as courts and police stations – should be jointly planned and integrated with human services, such as family violence, mental

health and drug and alcohol rehabilitation services,” Mr Masson said. Police Association Victoria secretary Ron Iddles has slammed Infrastructure Victoria’s recommendation for police supersites. He claims more than 80 per cent of Victorians want to live within a 10-minute drive from a police station. “They would prefer a smaller police station closer to where they live rather than a larger centralised station further away,” he said. “The bottom line is that the first and most important step for government is to commit to an urgent injection of additional police to meet

the state’s burgeoning population, particularly in growth corridors like Melton and Caroline Springs.” Mr Iddles said that while a phone line for non-urgent calls could have potential to free up some police resources, it should not be seen as a “substitute for additional boots on the ground”. A Victoria Police spokeswoman said there were no plans to close police stations to form supersites and any decisions would be made following community and government consultation. The state government was contacted for comment.

Bacchus’ BMX bandits off to Bendigo When Sam Simmonds watches her son Hunter on a BMX bike, her jaw drops. At six years of age, Hunter is a master of the sport – he whizzes past, turns several sharp corners and jumps from an eight-metre cliff with a beaming smile on his face. “It’s such a great sport,” Ms Simmonds says. Hunter is among dozens of Bacchus Marsh

youngsters heading to Bendigo this Friday for the 2016 BMX Victorian School Series competition. “The kids are having to take the day off school, so they love it,” Ms Simmonds says. She said all of the racers are part of the Bacchus Marsh BMX Club and have trained hard for the series.

VicRoads is cutting the speed limit on a main Truganina road that has been the scene of 32 casualty crashes in the past five years. From October 21, the speed limit along Hopkins Road between Dohertys and Greigs roads will be reduced from 100km/h to 80km/h in line with VicRoads’ “toward zero” road safety strategy. This 7.5 kilometre section, which turns into Derrimut Road from Boundary Road onwards, is a major thoroughfare between the cities of Wyndham and Melton. Police have recorded 32 casualty crashes along the stretch of Hopkins Road in the past five years, including three fatalities and nine serious injuries. Casualty crashes are defined as those resulting in people being admitted to hospital. In March this year, Jesus and Alma Remo were killed when their red Mazda four-wheel-drive collided with a truck in a head-on collision on Hopkins Road. Their 19-year-old daughter, Jesa, was pulled from the wreckage alive. Melton divisional road policing adviser Ross Burbidge said this year’s fatal crash was the catalyst that prompted police to apply for a speed reduction. “We supported VicRoads in reducing the speed limit along there … It’s still only a two-way, single-lane freeway.” VicRoads considered increased traffic volumes along Hopkins Road, the high number of fatalities and serious injuries, current road conditions and residential growth in making the decision. Fight to let son ‘rest’ By Sumeyya Ilanbey Sibel Ali was looking forward to giving birth to her son, Aydin. But several weeks before he was due to arrive, the heavily pregnant woman was rushed to hospital with a viral infection. The Taylors Hill resident hadn’t felt Aydin move all morning. A sonographer at the Epworth Freemasons hospital broke the bad news – there was no heartbeat. Aydin was delivered stillborn on February 3. He was buried at the Fawkner Memorial Park on February 11. “We wanted a proper burial site for him,” Ms Ali said. “We were given the option to bury Aydin in a mass [baby] grave but that wasn’t an option for us – we wanted a proper grave for him. “We were given the option of a smaller size grave … we specifically asked if monuments could be erected, and they said, ‘Yes’.” Upon making payment for the plot, Ms Ali says she was given details of stonemasons in the area. But when the family was ready to erect a headstone for their son, Ms Ali and her husband, Cemil, were told monuments weren’t allowed in the section where Aydin was buried. After to-ing and fro-ing, Ms Ali, a Muslim, says Fawkner Memorial Park employees told her monuments weren’t allowed in that section due to religious reasons – despite thousands of Muslims being buried there and their graves having headstones. “It’s a traumatising time as it is and this just makes things more stressful,” Ms Ali said. “I’m not asking for very much – I’m just asking for us to be allowed to have a resting place for our son. “What we’ve been given - the option to have a plaque - is basically something that really has no value to us.”

Sibel Ali would like to put up a gravestone at her son’s grave. (Kristian Scott)

Jacqui Weatherill, chief executive of Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust that manages Fawkner Memorial Park, said that while families were allowed to erect monuments in “many areas” of the cemetery, some sections had been allocated as no-monument areas. “The area the family chose in this instance is a no-monument section,” she said. “It was

established many years ago in response to consultation with community leaders. When Star Weekly asked about documents that outline which sections have been declared as no-monument areas, a trust spokeswoman said: “Information about different sections, memorials, burials, etc across the 19 sites we manage is varied and as such, not written explicitly in literature.”

Have your say on renewables The state government is reviewing the way it plans for renewable energy and it wants your feedback. The Community Renewable Energy Project discussion paper has been released for public feedback about the definition of community renewable energy projects, the payment-in-lieuof-rates methods for community-scale projects and planning arrangements for community-scale wind farms. Energy, Environment and Climate Change Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said the state government wanted to “help build and sustain” clean energy momentum. “Community renewable energy projects … can reduce emissions, create local jobs, benefit the environment, strengthen communities and give Victorians better control over their energy requirements,” Ms D’Ambrosio said. During community consultations last year, Ms D’Ambrosio said the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning received more than 1300 submissions as part of the renewable energy action plan. Public consultation on the discussion paper closes at 5pm on Monday, November 28, with a report to be considered by the state government by early next year. Melbourne Water Waterwatch co-ordinator Richard Akers uses an app to record frogs. (Luke Hemer)

Listen up, for croak bloke The common spadefoot toad only calls after a good rain. The elusive toad has been so hard to find, it’s been recorded in just five spots around Melton, with the last coming six years ago. Melton residents are being asked to record the calls of toads and frogs, which are mostly found along the Arnolds and Kororoit creeks, using a new Melbourne Water app. Melbourne Water frog expert Richard Akers said he hoped this would be the best spring to record Melbourne’s frog population, following the recent rainfall. “We’ve had one growling grass frog recorded at Kororoit Creek Primary School’s wetland,” he said. “Because they are endangered, it’s really important we get as much information about these elusive frogs as possible.”

The growling grass frog has been spotted at Balliang and Bacchus Marsh. Mr Akers said the best places to record frogs, included the Eynesbury lake, Kororoit Creek, Arnolds Creek, Melton Botanic Garden Ryans Creek, Werribee Gorge, Lerderderg River, Caledonian Park and the Wombat State Forest. “Please download the app, visit your local waterway and keep an ear out,” Mr Akers said. “If you hear a frog calling, hit the record button and the app will automatically send the location and recording to Melbourne Water for analysis.” To download the app, visit melbournewater. com.au/frogcensus or call 131 722. Smart lights switched on By Sumeyya Ilanbey An Australian-first ‘smart’ street light is being rolled out at Woodlea. The smart street lights include video surveillance, with footage beamed in real-time to a central location via wi-fi technology. The new street lighting is part of a Smart Community project, launched last Wednesday, that focuses on “smart learning, smart safety and smart wellbeing”. Woodlea project director Matt Dean said 25 smart street lights would eventually be installed in public places across the estate, at a

cost of about $6000. Money, Mr Dean said, that had been very well spent. “There won’t be any privacy issues because it’s only catching footage in public places, parks, sporting facilities,” Mr Dean said. “What’s common practice is that these facilities are monitored by body corporates or security, and this is the next level for our residents to know they’re safe.” The lights have been developed in partnership with Victoria Police and Melton council, with the possibility that smart street lights could one day be rolled out across the municipality. Leading senior constable Jo Mutsaerts said

police had worked with estate architects and residents on crime prevention techniques. She said smart street lights would not stop all crimes, but may be a “missing link”. “It will quite often be able to give us the connection of an offence taking place and the additional evidence we might require for prosecution.” At the launch of the Smart Community project, Premier Daniel Andrews said the street lights initiative was “very promising”. “The notion of deploying and employing the best technology – that’s a fantastic step YOUR forward,” Mr Andrews said.

Plans for a mobile outreach service for homeless youth have come to a halt after the state government revealed it would not be committing any funding for it. Homelessness service Hope Street last year submitted a business case to the government asking for ongoing operational funding for a crisis accommodation centre and mobile youth outreach service. Hope Street chief executive Donna Bennett said if funding was committed, an outreach service could be up and running within a month. “It was about trying to address a need,” Ms Bennett said. Ms Bennett said the lack of funding would “force young people to remain in unsafe situations” or travel into the city to try to access already overstretched services to help them. She said the government’s decision would come as a huge blow to the Melton community and its homeless youth. Ms Bennett said the outreach service would have allowed young people to continue their schooling and maintain contact with friends and family. “By not giving this to young people, we’re perpetuating their trauma, and we’re perpetuating homelessness and the crisis aspect of homelessness.” A spokeswoman for Health Minister Martin Foley said the government would continue working “constructively” with Hope Street. I live here – I moved from Malvern three years ago. What’s your favourite thing about living in Bacchus Marsh? I really like the people I’ve gotten to know; I find it very friendly. People are very supportive of me … since I’ve published the book, I’ve had so many people say, ‘Where can I get it, can you sign a copy for me?’ I’ve heard people say, you should run a cooking course here. What would you change about the area if you could?

years ago – with my mum and there was a recipe I remembered from years and years ago, when I was small. I told my mum, ‘You made a thing’ and described it to her … but she couldn’t remember how to make it. So the two of us spent a couple of hours trying to figure out how to make the batter the right consistency and how to cook the little pillows of dough. They’re like half-moon shape, and they’ve got crushed nuts, sugar and sultanas in them. You deep fry them. They’re called atayef in Arabic, but I’ve called them crunchy syrup pillows in my book. That was one of those rare instances that my mum and I worked together in the kitchen. What’s your favourite food to make and why?

I think, and council already knows this, the transportation issues with Main Street and Grant Street, because there are so many more families moving into the area. I think it’s really easy to leave people out and in isolation, so opportunities for them to engage.

Probably cakes and biscuits. I find food is a way for me to show love. I cook for people who are unwell or if they’re exhausted, or if there’s someone ill in the family or has passed away.

Where’s your favourite place to hang out in Bacchus Marsh?

I think it’s about two decades’ of work. When I first started it was just an idea – I had moved out of my home and was living on campus. My mum would cook meals for me, freeze them in small portions and I would live off it for a week. So I started trying to track down ingredients for things she made and eventually try and work out how to do it. Most of the foods in the book have a memory attached to them. They all have emotional attachments to them.

I like Maddingley Park and Baby Black Cafe. A group of like-minded ladies got me exercising, … we’d walk around the park together and then we started catching up weekly for coffee and breakfast in winter. It made me feel connected and have a sense of belonging. What’s your fondest memory of cooking? Probably the time I was in the kitchen – 18

CONSIDER THE SAUCE

Get involved and help us deliver better bus services

Kenny Weir takes a punt on an old Aussie favourite … Pokie venues are not a natural habitat for Consider The Sauce. In fact, if memory serves, this is only the second such story in CTS history. Sunshine RSL is very much part of the Sunshine central area with which we are so familiar. But it’s kinda tucked away in a back street, so is easy to overlook. Yet, despite its nearness to the hustle and bustle of Hampshire and Devonshire roads, this is like another world. And never, or almost never, the twain shall meet. But I feel immediately comfortable and at home – once I pass the obligatory sign-in procedures. I tune out the electronic gambling, and the garish lighting, and take in the scene – I’m pretty sure I’m the only non-regular here. I’m pleased to see that, aside from a few regulation-style pasta dishes on the specials list, the food is straight-up pub tucker. Why bother with a try at curries or wok food when there is so much of them to be had nearby for so little money? The prices seem fair, kept down perhaps by the fact there’s no table service – meals are ordered, delivered and picked up from the kitchen servery, which I actually like as it lends a cheerful participatory air to proceedings. Like me, it seems, about half the customers are here for the Sunday roast special. And for $10, I have only the most modest expectations.

We’re proposing changes to bus services in Caroline Springs, Deer Park, Plumpton, Burnside, Ardeer, Albion and Sunshine. Drop in during one of the following community information sessions to speak with us, hear about the proposed new bus network and find out what it means for you. SESSION DETAILS Tuesday 18 October 2016, 11am–1pm & 4pm–7pm Caroline Springs Library 193–201 Caroline Springs Blvd, Caroline Springs Friday 21 October 2016, 11am–1pm Watergardens Shopping Centre 399 Melton Hwy, Taylors Lakes Monday 24 October 2016, 4pm–7pm Springside Children’s & Community Centre 24–50 Becca Way, Caroline Springs

ROAST PORK AND VEGETABLES

So I am knocked and otherwise delighted by the meal I proceed to consume. The serve is big … always a good sign, and the pork – there’s beef also available – is tender. There’s plenty of good gravy too. The broccoli aside, all the vegetables are roasted – this is most excellent, as we know of another place that does $10 Sunday roasts and all the veg except for spuds are steamed in order to keeps costs down. I wish, just a little, I had asked for pumpkin to be excluded – there’s a stack of it – and had more of other vegie choices on offer. But overall, I could hardly be happier. Jayco Ballarat has everything you need for the caravan life Hitting the road with the family for a caravan road trip is a great way to see Australia. Family means everything to the team at Jayco Ballarat in Wendouree – the family-owned caravan dealership has based its business model around creating good times. Its managing director, Scott McPherson, says that as a child, he loved caravanning with his family and it’s that love that pushed him to open the business.

Get involved and tell us your feedback

“I have grown up enjoying family holidays,” he says. “We travelled all over Australia in our Jayco camper. After one of these trips, one thing led to another and I decided it was time for a career change. So I got a job selling caravans.” Selling new and used caravans, parts and accessories, Jayco Ballarat in Wendouree aims to get customers on the road as quickly and easily as possible.

For more information call 1800 800 007 007. If you can’t attend a session, find information, maps and an online survey at ptv.vic.gov.au/getinvolved Consultation closes midnight Friday, 11 November 2016.

“We can service most makes and models of caravans and complete insurance repairs,” says Scott. “We aim to provide great customer service to clients throughout their caravanning years.” Scott says Jayco Ballarat staff members endeavour to provide the best possible outcomes for the busy dealership’s customers. “One of my clients popped in after purchasing their first van from us six months ago,” he says.

“He was concerned with the way his van was towing. Working with him, we spent time making adjustments and testing it to ensure it was fixed. “He said he was much more confident with towing his caravan after we fixed it and that previous dealers he’d brought vans from never spent time with him. He was ecstatic as he felt he was treated as a person not a number.” With more on display and in the Wendouree

than 115 new and used caravans across the 2.4 hectares of land indoor showroom, Jayco Ballarat in has caravans for all requirements.

Scott says the Caravan Expo at Jayco Ballarat is something people should get involved in. “The annual event will be on October 2123,” he says. “There’ll be a range of caravans, tow vehicles and parts & accessories on display. “We’ll have the barbecue fired up with all proceeds going to local community groups. A local coffee cart will also be on-site. “And on the Saturday and Sunday, Tim Coleman from Tc Trickz will be showing off his stunt moves.” Jayco Ballarat, 217-231 Learmonth Road, Wendouree. NEWS STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

High-flyers have eye in the sky By Charlene Macaulay They’re the big boy toys taking the skies by storm. Drones are the latest must-have item for the tech-savvy and are increasingly being used for both recreational and commercial purposes. Add a camera and they can gather breathtaking aerial images and video. Essentially, it’s like a large-scale video game – except the controller is in charge of a real drone that is flying over a real world capturing real-time imagery. Anyone can own one, but they are subject to a host of aviation laws and you need a remote licence if you want to fly them commercially. Star Weekly speaks to four people about the rise of drones.

The business owner

Mark Playdon caught the drone bug a couple of years ago when a friend bought him a drone for Christmas. The Williams Landing resident crashed it inside his house a couple of days later then went out and bought another, attached a Go-Pro camera to it, and was hooked. These days, Mr Playdon runs Drone Addiction, an online store selling drones and drone equipment. He also takes aerial photography and videography for fun. Vision that he took of Trentham Falls caught the eye of Places Victoria, which republished his work on social media. “You shouldn’t fly any further than line of sight,” he said. “You should still be able to see the machine – even though they can go much further than that.” Mr Playdon’s drone – a DJI Inspire – has been decorated with black, white and grey camoflague stickers and retails for about $7000.

Mark Playdon puts a drone through its paces. (Damjan Janevski)

He said drones were particularly popular among men, admitting that he had yet to sell one of the devices to a woman.

The hobbyists

Mr Playdon is one of the members of the DJI Wyndham Owners Club. Its members get

together once a fortnight to fly their drones and share tips. Member Troy Hixon, 42, owns a DJI Phantom 3 and tries to fly it at least once or twice a week. “I had a friend come out from the UK who had one, and I took him around Wyndham and

different places to take photos and he was doing some pretty good video,” the Tarneit resident said. “It’s a nice little toy to have – an expensive toy, but it’s pretty cool. “You can get up high and get a good view of things. I like taking photos anyway, so this is just another way of taking different photos.”

Werribee’s Brendan Gill agrees. “It’s something to do for myself – it’s good fun,” the 48-year-old said. “I’ve always had an interest in photography, and this is just photography at a different level. “There’s quite a complex range of rules and regulations that you’ve got to stick by – the safety side of it is the big part. There’s no room in this hobby for people that want to be cowboys.” Mr Gill said Werribee South and along the coast were his favourite locations to take his DJI Phantom 3 Advanced out for a spin.

Drones in real estate

The real estate industry has jumped on the bandwagon, using drones to capture aerial photos and video to market properties.

Samantha McCarthy, from hockingstuart Werribee, said the agency had been using drones recently to market “lifestyle properties”. The senior sales consultant said aerial images and videos gave interested buyers a good perspective of property sizes and their surroundings. Ms McCarthy said the videos had received a positive response among buyers. “I don’t tend to use it on every single home,” she said. “It obviously doesn’t suit every single property – but it definitely works incredibly well to highlight the features of prestige properties, and larger homes. “Every little bit of extra marketing that’s well thought out will definitely help sell the home quicker and for a better result.”

Property of the week

TOOLERN VALE 1260-1398 Diggers Rest-Coimadai Road, 3337 PRDnationwide: 9747 6665

Price: $2.15 million

When the Barton family built this remarkable abode in the mid-1800s, it was the equivalent of today’s trophy home – a centre of community pastoral life on vast acreage. These days it comprises about 260 hectares that run into the foothills of the Macedon Ranges. The original house is a treasure trove of peak craftsmanship of the era, replete with cedar coffered ceilings, beautiful leadlight, carved bespoke woodwork, ornate mantelpieces and tall sash and box-bay windows. There are five big bedrooms in the grand

homestead, along with two huge living rooms, a bathroom, laundry, storeroom and kitchen. The latter is where a huge extension, added in the ’70s, begins – but the original cast-iron bread oven set in exposed bricks remains. A lovely old slow-combustion stove is also in here, as are St George appliances and lots of timber cupboards and a big nearby walk-in pantry. The add-on (which brings the whole to about 1000 square metres) is mostly notable for its vast proportions, including in a lounge-dining room centred by a two-way fireplace; a games room so big it

would miniaturise a full-size billiards table; and a rumpus room with a bar, similarly jaw-droppingly big and where city lights put on a show through large windows. Three bedrooms and a bathroom range along a hallway in this part. The giant main bedroom has a giant walk-in wardrobe and an en suite. Along with panoramic vistas, outdoors trots out a wonderful heritage-listed shearing shed and shearers’ cottage, other large sheds, multiple dams (town water on) and a creek to visit. There’s also a down-at-heel tennis court

and – a history buff’s talking point – the original side-by-side outdoor WCs. The grand old dame part of this spread merits a scrub-up because magnificence is in her bones and rewards for hard work would be profound – not least the preservation of local history and being part of a new chapter. The extension is a little incongruent and needs a clever hand to take advantage of the scale of rooms and the promise that implies. Carole Levy 21 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 11, 2016

Check your balcony Everybody loves the idea of relaxing out on their deck, but substandard decks can cause plenty of problems. In the past few years, balcony collapses in several states have resulted in a number of injuries and deaths. As balconies and decks are constantly exposed to the climate, they need to be periodically checked for deterioration. “Because of their height, deterioration of materials over time and possible illegal and poor building practices, your deck should always be checked, no matter its construction material, whether timber, steel or concrete,” says Victorian state manager of Archicentre David Hallett. Housing professionals recommend anyone purchasing a house with a deck or balcony to ask to see the appropriate building permits and find out when the deck was built and if it was built within regulations. “If you’re unsure of the condition of the balcony or deck, you should also request a recent safety report from an architect or engineer, a service Archicentre is able to provide,” Mr Hallett says. Decking collapses can also have severe financial and emotional impacts on home owners. “Home owners can be left with a trail of expensive legal and medical bills for all involved,” Mr Hallett says.

Make sure you balcony is safe for a sunny breakfast. (Supplied)

SPORT Rockbank needs consistency to hit finals form Rockbank’s season got off to a slow start in the Western Suburbs Churches and Community Cricket Association A.E Lowe Shield on Saturday. Rockbank was left to rue its poor handling of both ball and bat against Taylors Hill. Rockbank senior player Daniel Piccolo said they had left themselves too much work to do late in both innings. Batting first, Taylors Hill was bowled out in the final over of its innings, making 172. Rockbank could only respond with 8-155. “It was a disappointing result,” Piccolo said. “They were about 40 off six overs, and we then had to go about restricting them. “We got them to be five for 90-odd, and the aim was to keep them to under 150. “We didn’t want to be chasing more than that, which we ended up having to do.” Unlike Taylors Hill, Rockbank struggled early with the bat. “We could have started a lot better.

“Our run rate was too slow and we made only three runs off the first six overs.” Piccolo said two 16-year-olds, Jarod Spry and Byron Drew, were impressive. “Byron took two wickets, and was probably the best of the bowlers. Jarod, our wicketkeeper, came in at number nine and made a few runs. “Both played B-grade last year and have stepped up into the As. They showed what they can do and have cemented their spots in the team.” Piccolo said this season was about continuing on the work of last season. Rockbank finished on top of the ladder before losing in the first week of the finals. He said more consistency will be the key to developing their game further. “We have a young side with an average age of 21 or 22. It’s a very similar side to last year … we’ve added a few players here and there. “We want to keep developing the young blokes and, hopefully, they will stay with us or

possibly go on to higher levels. Making finals again is the aim. “Being consistent, week in and week out, will be the key,” he said. “Last year, we had players making 50 one week and then a duck the next week … it was the same with the bowling.” In other matches, Eynesbury Eagles defeated AA Maidstone. The Eagles batsmen had a field day, making 5-249, more than a run a ball, in their 35 overs. The bowlers then made easy work of it, bowling Maidstone out for 99. Tara Murray

Season opener a thriller By Tara Murray If the opening day of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup season is anything to go by, competition will be just as close as last season. Two matches went down to the final over of the day, while the other two matches were more than competitive. Reigning premiers Gisborne, along with Sunbury, started the season with thrilling wins, while runners-up Diggers Rest Bulla, and Woodend, both recorded solids starts. A four off the second last ball of the match got the Dragons’ season off to the right start against Bacchus Marsh. Only two batsmen passed 20 for the Bulls, but the lower order put enough runs together to make 178, before being bowled out in the final over of the innings. The Dragons shared the wickets around, with four players taking two each. In reply, Dragons’

top and middle orders did all the work. They were made to fight it out, with that four on the second last ball getting them across the line. The Dragons finished 4-179. Jason Wilson top-scored, with 65 not out. Sunbury’s match against Riddell was even closer, with the result decided on the final ball of the match. Riddell batted first and made 4-178. Led by the top order, Sunbury got off to a good start, and was cruising at 1-108, but a quick turnover of wickets got Riddell back into the game. With one wicket in hand, Sunbury hit the winning runs off the last ball of the game. Heath Boffey top-scored for Sunbury with 57. In the other matches, Diggers Rest Bulla proved too good for a promoted Rupertswood side. Playing in the top division for the first time since the 2012-13 season, Rupertswood made a hard-fought 8-118 off its overs.

The lower order of Josh Smith (25 runs) and Chris Ryan (31 not out) rescued the innings, after they were in trouble at 6-63. Opener Michael Treweek top-scored with 35. The Burras shared the wickets around, with three players taking two wickets each. In reply, the Burras made the runs with six overs and four wickets to spare. Playing coach Kevin Barker top-scored with 28. Woodend started its season off with a victory over Romsey. After winning the toss, Woodend made 5-165 from its 40 overs. Former premier cricketer Michael Nalesnyik top-scored with 53 not out, while skipper Adam Johnstone made 40. In reply, Romsey finished its innings at 9-137. Matthew Burkett top-scored with 35, while Taylor Stevenson, who has come across from Macedon, made 33. Tom Robson was a star with the ball, taking five wickets.

Melton South Primary School Cricket Club’s dream of having a junior team again take to the park has come to fruition. After not fielding juniors last season for the first time since 1992, the Royals put out a call before this season to attract new players. Club president Paul Davies said the club got enough players to field an under-12 side. The Royals under-12 side played its first game of the season on Friday night against Eynesbury Eagles Green in the Melton Junior Cricket Association. The match was a thriller with the Eagles winning by two runs. “We managed to get 16 kids, which is fantastic,” Davies said. “We’ve got a couple of eight-year-olds, through to some 11-year-olds. “To have just 15 players at training, to see that many players wanting to play is a positive for the club.” Davies said he hoped it was just the beginning of a re-establishment of a junior program at the club. “We need to make sure we sustain the junior program,” he said. “Growth of the program is important for us.” The Royals’ top two senior sides will wait another week to take to the pitch, with the Victorian Turf Cricket Association calling off the opening round. Medals flow for Melton By Tara Murray Melton Swimming Club members had a busy September as they completed laps at events throughout Victoria and Australia. The club was represented by members at the 2016 Victorian age and open short course championships and state team age short course championships, while Melton Swimming Club members were also part of Victoria’s team for the School Sport Australia swimming championships in Darwin. Melton Swimming Club committee member Cathy Stewart said it was encouraging to firstly see so many swimmers qualify for those events, and then for them to swim personal best times, some even winning medals. Stewart said they had 30 swimmers

compete in the Victorian short course championships, where they competed in 135 races between them. Three-quarters of these swims were registered as personal best times, with 45 top-10 finishes. Melton swimmers came home with a tally of seven medals. Kayla Jones (three silver and two bronze) and Jack Carr (three silvers) won multiple medals, while Joanna Denoual, Manar Mahfouz, Grace McGoldrick and Angela Molnar each won a bronze. Meanwhile, five club swimmers were part of the Victorian team for the School Sport Australia swimming championships. Mitchell Willis was named captain of the Victorian team, and made seven finals, winning two bronze medals. Carr had a standout meet, making 10 finals

and winning two gold, three silver and three bronze medals. Francine Cartina made six finals, winning a medal of each colour. Noah O’Donnell won a gold and bronze medal after making eight finals. Karlos Nuestro made five finals. Carr finished his busy month as one of 40 swimmers selected to represent Victoria at the state team age short course championships in Canberra. In Canberra, the team was mentored and coached by Olympians and AIS support staff. Carr competed in six events, coming away with a second placing … just two days after returning from the school sport championships in Darwin. Melton Centrals may be playing in a different competition, but it’s a similar looking team with some very similar opposition. The Centrals’ top two sides play this season in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association after all the turf sides from Williamstown and District Cricket Association moved across to the VTCA. The club’s third and fourth teams remain in the WDCA’s matting competition. All but one team from the WDCA’S top grade last season, Caroline Springs, are playing in the VTCA west competition this year. The seven teams are joined by Williamstown Imperials, Seabrook and County West. Centrals’ coach Adam Hulett said it won’t be much different to the old competition, as they face many of the same teams. “We’ve played against most of the teams before,” Hulett said. “There’s only three or four teams we don’t really know.” He said the preseason has been interrupted by wet weather, which also prevented the season getting under way on Saturday. Centrals’ round one match against County West has been rescheduled for November 13, due to not enough pitches being ready across the competition. Hulett said the side would be very similar to last season, and he is likely to give these players first crack at the senior team. “The majority of the playing group is the same,” he said. “We’ve added a couple of players here and there, but no big names … it will come down to training and performances in the early matches who will be in the team.” Centrals finished on top of the ladder last season before losing in the opening round of the finals. Hulett said batting was the key to being able to go further. “On our day, we can beat anyone. We were a bit unfortunate in the finals … we were beaten by a better team on the day. “It’s always disappointing, but we know where we went wrong – it was probably our batting.” Centrals will this week play Gellibrand on the first day of a two-day match. Meanwhile, Melton South PSCC will play Grand United. Caroline Springs which plays in the north A1 division, is due to play Moonee Valley in a two-day clash. Sydenham/Hillside, which is also in that division, plays Sunshine YCW. Tara Murray

Bacchus Marsh started the Central Highlands bowls division 1 season with a tight loss to Kyneton. The two teams shared the four rinks, with three of the four rinks separated by either seven or eight points. The 18-shot win for Kyneton in the fourth rink separated the two teams, with Kyneton taking the match 88 (14)-77 (4). Bacchus Marsh’s second side won in division 2 and Diggers Rest won in division 3.

Bowls

Melton started the Bowls Victoria pennant season in sparkling form producing the biggest win of the opening round in division 1 section 1. Playing at home, Melton won three rinks on the way

to a 98 (16)-62 (2) win against Moonee Valley. This week Melton will travel to Sunbury to take on its arch-rival, which had a 35-shot loss to Glenroy on opening day.

Cricket

Darley has to wait at least another week before it starts its Ballarat Cricket Association season. Last Tuesday, the association called off Saturday’s opening day of the season due to the inclement weather that had affected the area. The association said because of wet and windy weather, most grounds wouldn’t have been ready for play. All first-grade matches, including Darley against Napoleons-Sebastopol, will be played as one-day fixtures.

VSDCA

The start to the Victorian Sub-district Cricket Association season has been delayed a week after wet weather of recent weeks saw the opening day of the season cancelled. Many grounds weren’t ready, so the association decided to turn the opening round into a one-day match instead. Melton will travel to Bayswater to start its season.

“We lost two from the top side from last year, and gained six players. It strengthens the ones and goes through all the grades.” Clayton said there was a hunger in the side to go one further than last year when they lost to Rupertswood in the grand final. “It’s good to be back at the club,” he said. “Last year, they had a good year … but it didn’t finish the way they wanted it to. “We’ve retained 90 per cent of the side from last year, and they are hungrier than ever. “We’re going to take it one game at a time and enjoy it.” In other games, Lancefield defeated Bacchus Marsh, Wallan was too strong for East Sunbury and Macedon defeated Sunbury United. In C-grade, Blackwood was defeated by GDCA newcomers Kyneton. Kyneton made 7-194 off its 40 overs, with Blackwood bowled out for 107.

2017 Coaching appointments Success breeds success and the 2016 Ballarat Football League Senior Premiership club invites applications for coaches across football and netball in our junior program. The Bacchus Marsh Junior Football Netball Club (BMJFNC) has a proud history of developing elite talent that have gone on to play at AFL, VFL, Tac Cup, BFL senior, junior/senior interleague levels. We pride ourselves on developing our players not only as footballers but also into quality people. The BMJNC is seeking enthusiastic and like-minded football and netball coaches to teach and develop our players in the following age groups : Football Netball U10- Development/Reserve/Seniors U11 - Reserve/Senior U12 – Reserves/Seniors U13 – Reserve/Senior U14 – Reserves/Seniors U15 – Reserve/Senior Under16.5 Reserve/Seniors U17 – Reserve/Senior U12 – Girls Youth Girls (13-18)

New Melton Centrals coach Mathew Sproule. (Supplied)

He said one his aims at Melton was to develop a better pathway between seniors and juniors. “I want to develop them to all play the same way through from juniors to seniors,” he said. “I’ll have a chat to the junior coaches about working with a similar game plan. “With the club moving to the new ground last year, it’s a good chance to do something with the juniors.” As for the senior list, Sproule said the club would continue to bring through younger players. “The club has done most of the work already with the majority of players re-signed,” he said. “We need to try bring in at least three or four players to have a bit of depth next year.” Tara Murray

Our club has invested in a coaching program that will develop, mentor and guide our coaches through their journey and will enable you to focus on a structure, strategy and plan that will bring out the best in our young athletes. Designed by AFL and TAC level coaches, they will be on hand to support our coaches to execute the latest in coaching techniques. This program is designed to include netball coaching methods also. Reporting directly to the Junior Coaching coordinator you will be expected to enforce and monitor our player, coach and parent code of contact as well as play a major part in our player and coach development programs. Other key areas of responsibility and skills include and are not limited to: • Ensuring ALL players are given the opportunity to learn and develop as a person and footballer; • Adhere to the BFL Coaching Philosophy • Plan training sessions in line with the development program guidelines; • Keep an updated coaches training and game day handbook; • Coach your team on game day with your personal style while staying within our development program guidelines; • Be prepared to undertake a police check and or apply for a working with children’s card; • Complete the AFL Level 1 coaching accreditation (at the cost of the club);

Youth and development will be the focus of new Melton Centrals coach Mathew Sproule. Sproule, appointed coach of the Riddell District Football League club just over two weeks ago, is already getting down to work. Centrals finished 11th last season, with only two wins; both came against Rockbank, which failed to win a match. Sproule admits there will be no quick fix on hand for the next season. “It will be a development year,” he said. “We need to try and get more professional, on and off field. We need to get fitter and [be] training the whole time. “In any footy, effort and hard work can go a long way.” Sproule comes to the Centrals after coaching Ocean Grove, Modewarre and Portarlington in the Bellaraine Football League, including a grand final with Ocean Grove. Despite living in Ocean Grove and coaching down the coast in recent years, Sproule is not a stranger to the Centrals and the Melton community. “My son plays here, so I’ve been involved – I’m already down here two times a week,” he said. “I’m coming back to my town and there’s a lot of work to do. I coached Melton South [in the Ballarat Football League] between 2000 and 2005 before I moved to Ocean Grove.” Sproule is returning to coaching after a six-month break. His previous side, Portarlington, sacked him after two and a half years. Portarlington’s record under Sproule was three wins in 2014, five in 2015 and two this year. He said the break ended up being a blessing in disguise. “I was done at Portarlington,” he said. “It gave me time off during footy season for the first time in 30 years.”

St Anthonys started off its Gisborne and District Cricket Association B-grade season in fine fashion with a big win against Ashfield on Saturday. Last season’s runners-up were the big winners in the opening round of this season, showing clearly they’ll be in the mix again. After making 7-168, they bowled Ashfield out for just 99. New St Anthonys’ captain-coach Cameron Clayton said it was good to get a win on the board early on. “We got off to a good start with Jamie Bolger and Lucas Alaimo, and lost our first wicket at 45,” Clayton said. “We built partnerships before losing a couple of wickets in the middle. “The tail wagged a bit and got us to 168.” Paul Scott top-scored with 42 not out, with Bolger making 36. Clayton said he thought their score was about on par for a quick ground, but stressed the one key to ensuring a win. “We knew if we could get early wickets … we would be fine,” he said. “Jas King is the key with both the bat and ball. If we couldn’t get him out, we had to get the other players out around him, and he would have to start playing shots and have a crack. “We eventually got him.” King top-scored for Ashfield with 39. Bolger and John Jensen took three wickets apiece. Clayton, who said he was enjoying his time back at St Anthonys after playing with McIntyre

Cup side Riddell last season, said the club as a whole had been strengthened this season. “We pulled in quite a few players, and will be strong across all four grades,” he said. “There are four or five who could play in the first 11 quite easily. “Most of the blokes have played with other clubs across Melton,” he said.

Successful applicants will receive: • Personal coaching development • Allocation of a financial budget to conduct a preseason and mid-season team activity • Technology aids in mobile apps and game video to support player and game development • Senior coaches box experience with premiership senior coach (14’s and 16’s only) Being a coach at the BMJFNC is an exciting opportunity and will give you great opportunity to enhance your coaching ability and profile. Please submit your interest in writing to bmjfc1@gmail.com with a list of your personal and football skills and attributes and why the BMJFNC should put you in charge of our players futures. 47 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 11, 2016
