Pre-poll photo furore By Sumeyya Ilanbey A Melton council candidate, who posted photos online of a toddler holding firearms and ammunition, has defended his actions saying the images had been “taken out of context”. Watts ward candidate Dilpreet Singh, a Justice of the Peace since 2010, has come under fire for posting photos of his son on his personal Facebook page about three years ago. The photos, which are believed to have been taken in India, have recently been removed. The Justice Department is now investigating Mr Singh over concerns he may have brought the JP role into “disrepute”.
‘‘
It is an insult of those soldiers … fighting terrorism - Dilpreet Singh
’’
In a statement to Star Weekly Mr Singh said he understood why the images “could potentially” be offensive, but said they were “culturally acceptable” and there was a “valid explanation for this”. “I am from Sikh religion, which is a warrior’s religion where Sikhs have sacrificed their lives for country,” the statement read. “Sikh regiment have won the highest Victoria Crosses per capita and fought in world wars, even along with Australian army while service with the British. “So often, grandparents who serve in army create images like this to portray a token of honour, especially when the child is first-born into the next generation. This was the case in my family too.” Mr Singh said putting the images out of context and comparing it with terrorism was “an insult of tradition of my culture where there are countless examples of martyrs who lost lives to safeguard motherland”. A Justice Department spokeswoman said Victorian justices of the peace are required to comply with the Honorary Justices Code of Conduct. “The prescribed conduct includes that an honorary justice must not behave in a manner that brings the office of bail justice or Justice of the Peace into disrepute,” the spokeswoman said. Mr Singh said he had never condoned acts of violence, and he valued his responsibility as a JP. “It is extremely disappointing that personal images have been used to drive a political

agenda in a deliberate attempt to discredit me and my culture,” Mr Singh said. “It is shameful for someone to use such images and post them in such a way. It is an insult of those soldiers who have been fighting terrorism to defend the nation and my uncles [who] were dreaming for my son to be a soldier one day.” Victoria Police spokeswoman Sharyn Darcy
said police had investigated the photos and were satisfied that no offences had been committed in Victoria. “We have spoken to a 36-year-old from Hillside in relation to images that were circulated online,” Ms Darcy said. “The investigation has been completed.” A state government spokesman said the photos were “deeply concerning”.
A spokeswoman for the Victorian Electoral Commission said it was unable to moderate the private behaviour of candidates. “Behaviours that could be considered offensive or threatening in any way should be reported to Victoria Police.” A spokeswoman for Melton council said the council would not be making a statement as it was in caretaker mode.

Hospital safety a key priority By Sumeyya Ilanbey The Victorian health department for many years failed to provide “adequate oversight” to the state’s hospitals, with gaping holes that led to quality and safety systems being overlooked, a damning review has found. Health services expert Stephen Duckett led a review into hospital safety following a cluster of avoidable baby deaths at the Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital. His findings were made public last Friday, and have sparked what the government is
calling the “most significant reform” to the state’s health system. Health Minister Jill Hennessy announced the state government has accepted in-principle all the recommendations made by the review, and would invest a further $13 million to strengthen the quality and safety in Victorian hospitals. The sweeping reforms include a new health information agency to overhaul the way in which information is shared across the health system, a ministerial board advisory committee to oversee hospital boards, and a Victorian
Clinical Council to advise the government. Ms Hennessy said the leadership that was required from the health department to achieve change and prioritise patient safety had not occurred. “A goal of zero avoidable harm is an ambitious target, but one we have an obligation to do everything we can to achieve,” Ms Hennessy said. Dr Duckett found while other Australian states had been improving its governance capacity and quality and safety in hospitals, Victoria lagged behind. The report found while the department
doubled its safety and quality staff following the deaths at the Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital, it only employed a fraction of the resources used in comparable states. Djerriwarrh Health Services administrator John Ballard, who oversees the Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital, said patients could “rightly have confidence in and be proud of” their public hospital. “The hospital is accredited, the service has invested in new medical equipment, and skills and training continues to be a priority,” Dr Ballard said.
Have a say on bus upgrades Caroline Springs residents are being asked to have their say on a proposed bus network upgrade. The new network is expected to extend coverage to residential and industrial areas, with increased services to Watergardens Shopping Centre, Sunshine, Caroline Springs town centre and Highpoint shopping centre. And for the first time, buses will be travelling to the new Caroline Springs station, which is expected to open early next year. Kororoit MP Marlene Kairouz said the upgrades would provide more public transport options for residents in a fast-growing area. “It’s important we get this upgrade right, which is why we’re encouraging locals to go online or drop into a session to have their say,” Ms Kairouz said. “The new and improved network will connect with the new Caroline Springs station, boost access for residents in growing areas, and make it easier for people to … get on the train.” Public Transport Victoria will be holding community consultation sessions at the Caroline Springs library from 11am-1pm and 4-7pm on Tuesday, October 18; at Watergardens Shopping Centre from 11am-1pm Friday, October 21; at the Springside Children’s and Community Centre from 4-7pm Monday, October 24; at Visy Cares Hub from 2-5pm Tuesday, October 25; at the Hunt Club Community Arts Centre from 11am-1pm and 4-7pm Thursday, October 27; and the Caroline Springs Shopping Centre from 11am-1pm Saturday, October 29.
Green thumbs urged to show their passion The Bacchus Marsh Horticulture Show is more than your “typical flower show”. The region’s green thumbs are being invited to enter their plants, vegies and flowers to be in the running for first prize. Organising committee member Jock Taylor encouraged everyone from all ages to enter this year’s show. Categories include roses, cut flowers, floral art, Australian natives, pot plants, garden produce or juniors. And the best “overall” exhibit will receive a rosette, sash and prize. “Children 14 and under may enter the junior section, but they can also enter any other section, such as the garden produce.” Ms Taylor said there will be plenty happening on the day to keep everyone entertained. The Bacchus Marsh Horticulture Show will be held at the Public Hall, Main Street, Bacchus Marsh on Saturday, October 22 from noon-5pm, and from 9am-4pm on Sunday, October 23. Entry is $5 for adults, while children under 14 are admitted free. Details: 0408 688 894 Sumeyya Ilanbey

Solar savings a ‘dream’ By Sumeyya Ilanbey When Raymond Scheicher decided to install solar panels at his Melton West home, the retired grandfather was told he’d save at least $1200 a year. Instead, Mr Scheicher claims he’s out of pocket by $400 every three months. “In my last bill cycle, I used 1029 kilowatts [of electricity]. I buy from them at 24 cents per kilowatt,” he says. “I give them, in 90 days, 658 kilowatts at five cents, so I got $32 credit. That’s $10 a month. “The one before, I sold back to the grid only 351 kilowatts and I got $17 credit.” Mr Scheicher says he was told by a solar installation company his 20 solar panels, with a five-kilowatt inverter, would generate about 25 kilowatts a day in warmer weather, and about 15 when cloudy. But the energy generated from the panels since he had them installed in March has been far from those figures. “Now, I follow for quite a while this meter. You remember one day a few weeks ago it was really hot, 27 degrees. The highest it came was 16 kilowatts, and that was about 11am … 2pm, I went again to check up, it’s generating four kilowatts.” Mr Scheicher says he feels “ripped off”. “The [state] government should bring back a proper feed-in tariff. This government is encouraging you to get solar so you don’t pay so much electricity. But energy companies charge you 24 cents for power you use, and $1.10 per day for supply of electricity, and we’re only getting five cents per kilowatt.” The Essential Services Commission recently tabled a report in State Parliament reviewing solar panels and feed-in tariffs, which was set at five cents a kilowatt in August last year.
Raymond Scheicher believes he has been duped by the solar power company. (Kristian Scott)
State Energy, Environment and Climate Change Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said it was important that customers were paid a “fair price” for the energy they provide to the electricity grid. Greens MP Colleen Hartland said the current feed-in tariff wasn’t fair and called on the state government to commit to a one-for-one tariff,
where customers receive the full amount that retailers resell the excess solar electricity for. “Solar is booming and reducing emissions,” Ms Hartland said. “We should encourage people to install solar panels and stay connected to the grid, but the government’s opposition to a fair payment is driving people away.”

‘Here to help’ on utility bills Melton residents are among Victoria’s most frequent complainers about energy and water-related incidents, including debt collection, even though the number fell in the past financial year. In its annual report released today (October 18), the office of the Energy and Water Ombudsman Victoria reveals Melton residents made more than 800 complaints in 2015-16, down 14 per cent on the year before. The bulk of issues were debt collectionrelated (146), followed by disconnection (109) and unexpectedly high bills (104). Ombudsman Cynthia Gerbert said her office had seen a “shift” in the complaints being received, with debt collection now the second-highest driver of its workload. Ms Gerbert said the overall decline in complaints to her office was partly due to businesses becoming better equipped at handling customer complaints. “All energy and water companies are required to have hardship programs,” she said. “So if customers are telling them they can’t pay, [the companies] have to help them out. They’re obliged to work out a way to continue supplying customers with electricity and water.” Ms Gerbert urged people experiencing hardship to speak with the business first and if still unhappy to lodge a complaint with the Ombudsman. “All sorts of things go on that influence customers’ experience, and it’s hard for people to navigate the system. We’re here to help.” Sumeyya Ilanbey

Victim program on track By Sumeyya Ilanbey Eight years ago, Melton police made five referrals to a victims assistance hotline. There’s been a “remarkable turnaround” since then, with the number of referrals increasing by 20,000 per cent to 1036 in the 2015-16 financial year. Department of Justice’s Amanda Smillie, cohealth’s Lyn Morgain and Melton police’s Inspector Kathy Rudkins last week signed a two-year memorandum of understanding for a Victims Assistance Program that will run out of the Melton police station.
‘‘
They help victims through the court processes ...
’’
- Inspector Rudkins
The program, designed by cohealth and the Department of Justice, works with victims of crime and connects them to appropriate services, Inspector Rudkins said. “They help victims through the court processes, and actually take away some of the work from our police,” Inspector Rudkins said. “And they’re more qualified to deal with victims … they help victims navigate through the whole judicial process and hook them up with any services, like counselling, gambling stuff, financial stuff.” Ms Smillie said 10 years ago, the victims assistance line would receive about 20 calls per day – on Monday, October 10, between 9am and 5pm, there were 198 referrals. She said the department expected the demand for services to increase in the future as the area’s population grew.
Kathryn Rudkins, Lyn Morgain and Amanda Smillie. (Kristian Scott)
“We’re doing brilliant things out here,” Ms Smillie said. “We know crime is an issue across Victoria, and we also know in postcodes 3337 and 3338, which includes Melton and Melton West, the top three crime types are assaults, aggravated burglaries and, sadly, homicide.
“So our Victims Assistance Program workers are working with really complex cases, there are really intense needs … and cases are requiring case management for upwards of three to five years.” Victims Assistance Helpline: 1800 819 817 or Melton police: 9747 7999

Vigilance call on fire safety With the fire season getting closer, authorities are reminding people to clean up around their properties. The annual Fire Action Week (October 23-30) is an opportunity for residents to think about “first risk”, prepare their properties and decide what to do if a fire starts nearby. The CFA attended almost 4000 incidents in District 14, which includes Melton and Moorabool, in the six months to March 31 this year. Melton council chief executive Kel Tori urged people to clean up around their properties, including removing weeds, firewood and other rubbish from around buildings and fence lines. “With significant fire activity taking place year after year, threatening lives, land and property, understanding the fire risk in your area is vital when preparing a plan of what to do if a fire starts,” Mr Tori said. “Fire Action Week is a timely reminder to be vigilant in ensuring that your property is fire safe and that you are prepared for the fire season.” To prepare for the fire season, download the VicEmergency app to your mobile device, check fire danger ratings in your area and make plans for what you’ll do on hot, dry, windy days. For information about fire safety, visit emergency.vic.gov.au. For more information, visit cfa.vic.gov. au or melton.vic.gov.au. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Experts will soon be teaching youngsters how to safely ride their scooters. YMCA Skate Services will host a scooter safety clinic, for children aged under six, to help them stay safe at their local skate parks. Melton council chief executive Kel Tori said that while riding a scooter was a fun and much-loved pastime for children, it was an activity that could be dangerous for young and inexperienced riders. “Council wants to make sure that even our youngest residents stay safe while they’re
enjoying our skate parks and open spaces,” Mr Tori said. “So we’re encouraging scooting enthusiasts to come along to this scooter clinic, where they can develop the skills they need to protect them from serious injury.” The clinic will run from 10.30am on Thursday, October 27, at Taylors Hill Neighbourhood House, 121 Calder Park Drive. Heavy rain is dam good By Sumeyya Ilanbey About six months ago, John Lakey’s “dam” was just a barren, cracked creek bed. Now, and after months of heavy rainfall, the Ingliston farmer has a smile on his face – his dam is almost full. But he’s no happier than his cattle, which drink more than 50 litres of water a day. Star Weekly first spoke to Mr Lakey in March in response to a Climate Council report that stated climate change was having serious consequences for Australia’s farmers. At the time, Mr Lakey said the cattle were feeling the brunt of hotter weather and lower rainfalls, with the dams practically empty since 2013. What a difference a few months makes. “This is phenomenal,” Mr Lakey said last week. “After all those dry years … that water will keep us going for a while.” Mr Lakey says he’s even managed to increase the size of the catchment bank to capture all the rainfall. He hopes to one day convert his Ingliston farm into a self-sustainable place. Keris Arndt, of the Bureau of Meteorology, said Melton recorded 80 millimetres of rain in September, almost double the September average of 44.7 millimetres. It also recorded above average rainfall in May, June and July. Only August’s monthly rainfall was below average this year. “It’s been a very wet winter into spring,” Mr Arndt said. “The outlook is for a wetter than average October for almost all of south-east Australia.” And the reason for this wet weather? “We’ve had a very strong Indian Ocean dipole, as well as an easing of the El-Nino that we’ve had over the last few years,” Mr Arndt said.
Bid to beef up health overview Health ministers will review the way the national health watchdog operates in a bid to stamp out “dangerous and dodgy” practitioners. Victoria’s Health Minister, Jill Hennessy, urged her federal and interstate counterparts at last week’s Council of Australian Governments (COAG) health council meeting to review the way the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) operates. Her calls for reform follow the national agency coming under fire last year for taking more than two years to respond to complaints about doctors at the Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital. Ms Hennessy accused AHPRA of failing to do its job after an investigation into stillborn deaths at Bacchus Marsh Hospital found there were 11 preventable baby deaths between 2003 and 2014. Ms Hennessy made a number of recommendations at COAG, including expanding the range of actions that can be taken and mandatory notification of medical settlement cases and writs. Her spokeswoman said all the minister’s recommendations had been endorsed unanimously and referred by COAG for further work and investigation. “Victoria’s first tranche of reforms to overhaul the national health practitioner registration scheme to better protect patients from dangerous and dodgy health practitioners were unanimously endorsed,” the spokeswoman said. NEWS STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
MY PLACE Rod Fraser, 44, moved to Melton more than two decades ago. The Melton SES deputy controller tells Sumeyya Ilanbey he couldn’t be prouder of his decision. What’s your connection to Melton? I shifted here probably about 23 years ago, when I got married. Me and my wife decided this was the place we wanted to start a family. I was brought up in Broadmeadows and then lived in Bendigo for a little while. My wife lived in Taylors Lakes, so it [Melton] wasn’t too far from where she lived and basically back then Melton was somewhere that looked alright and fairly cheap. As it turned out, it’s a great place to live. What’s your favourite thing about living in Melton? Over the years it’s become a very community-oriented place. It’s getting a lot larger, but I’ve always been involved in community-based things, and there’s quite a number of them. What would you change about the area if you could? Maybe improve some of the roads – such as the freeways. Because there’s so much traffic these days, I think we just need a bit better roads. Where’s your favourite place to hang out?
(Laughs) Yeah. Why did you decide to join the SES? I was a scout leader initially and a friend of mine was a member of the SES and he said they needed more members. I went down and the rest is history – this was about five years ago. I like helping people and to me the SES is like another family, and it’s just a fun place to be. You recently headed to South Australia to help out the SES crews there – can you tell me a little about that? We had three of our members head over there – two of us were delivering a truck so we drove up to South Australia and then flew back a few days later. The guys there needed a truck and a bit of help after the recent storms and flooding. What’s the most rewarding part of being in the SES? For me, it’s the thanks you get from people. Like, you don’t get thanks from everybody but there are a few people who come up and say thank you. We’re volunteers and we don’t get paid obviously, so it’s a little bit of appreciation for the work we do.
12327241-DJ42-16 10045391-01
Honestly, I haven’t got one. I just pretty much take the dog for a walk around the streets.
I guess your neighbourhood is your favourite place to hang out then?

Melton RSL sub-branch vice-president Stephen Cook and sub-branch secretary Kevin Murray. (Joe Mastroianni)
We will remember them At the 11th hour, on the 11th day of the 11th month, Australians will ‘remember’ soldiers who lost their lives. And as the day nears, Returned and Services League’s across the country, including the Melton sub-branch, will gear up for the annual Poppy Appeal. Poppies were among the first plants to bloom in the “devastated battlefields” of Belgium and France, and since 1921 they have been used in remembrance of those who fell during times of war. These days, the iconic red flowers are sold to raise funds for current and former service men and women.
Melton RSL president Ian Lawrey said the community and members showed a “phenomenal” commitment to making the Poppy Appeal a success. “It is humbling to see the wave of support and enthusiasm by the locals who support the Poppy Appeal in so many ways,” Mr Lawrey said. You can purchase a poppy from Woolworths, Officeworks, an RSL sub-branch, or from volunteer collectors. You can also donate online at poppyappeal.com.au. Sumeyya Ilanbey
Punctuality on the Ballarat railway line is at an 18-month high, but there’s still more room for improvement, V/Line says. Monthly performance figures published last week reveal 91.6 per cent of services on the Ballarat line arrived on time in September – up from 89 per cent in August, and the 87.1 per cent 12-month average. V/Line spokeswoman Catalina Filip said patronage on the Ballarat line had increased by more than 12 per cent since the Regional Rail Link was improved, with more than 335,000 trips taken in September. She said some of the reasons for last month’s delays were trespassers on tracks, train faults and signal faults. “Our ultimate aim is to get customers to where they need to go and we are pleased Ballarat line trains continue to see improvements in punctuality,” Ms Filip said. “V/Line acknowledges there is still room for improvement and every member of the team is dedicated to ensuring our trains are punctual so customers can get to their destinations on time.” Ms Filip said an adjusted timetable was making a difference to the punctuality, and the Rowsley Crossing Loop was helping V/Line recover from unexpected disruptions. Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said the last month’s performance figures were a “great result”. Sumeyya Ilanbey

GORDON RIVER CRUISE
By Jane Hutchinson With place names such as Cape Grim, Suicide Bay and Dismal Swamp, north-west Tasmania hardly sounds like an idyllic holiday destination. But while Hobart’s stunning MONA museum has cast its glow of cool sophistication over south-east Tassie, the north-west has a different
but no less compelling allure, rooted in ancient forests, a dramatic and bloody history and a breathtaking sense of isolation. You can get a taste of all three aboard a cruise down the majestic Gordon River, out of the postcard-pretty west coast village of Strahan. On a 5½-hour cruise, the 32-metre Lady Jane Franklin II crosses Macquarie Harbour to the
treacherous mouth at the southern ocean – named Hells Gate by convicts en route to the notorious Sarah Island penal colony – before following the convicts’ course upstream into the heart of the world-heritage-listed wilderness area. Time seems to fall away as the boat sails deep into Tasmania’s past to Sarah Island,
where ruins of one of Australia’s most brutal convict settlements are brought to life on an entertaining tour. There’s a more contemporary slice of history back on board as the crew explain how the majestic, centuries-old Huon pines lining the river were almost lost in the bid to dam the Gordon in the late 1970s, sparking Australia’s

national conservation movement. Listen and learn or just sit back, enjoy the buffet lunch and get lost in the awe-inspiring views reflected in the tannin-stained water. Just an hour’s drive from Strahan’s quaint charms, the moonscape hills of Queenstown seem as if in another world. The enormous Mount Lyell copper mine that fuelled the town’s economy for 130 years is temporarily closed after a spate of fatal accidents and a plunge in copper prices. But the eerily desolate landscape, scarred by open cut mining and acid rains, is now a drawcard for artists. Local gallery LARQ was established by printmaker Raymond Arnold, who moved here 10 years ago and is a driving force behind the town’s biennial arts festival The Unconformity. Just as a revegetation program is slowly bringing new life to the barren hills that loom over town, the first shoots of artistic awakening promise to reinvigorate the area. Meanwhile, enterprising former mine workers have made the most of Mount Lyell’s hiatus, leading tours deep into the labyrinthine shafts that now lie quiet. For those unfazed by descending six kilometres into the earth, Queenstown Heritage Tours offers a fascinating glimpse into a subterranean world of backbreaking labour, gargantuan rock-crushing machinery and engineering accomplishments that few of us ever get to see. » gordonrivercruises.com.au » queenstownheritagetours.com Jane Hutchinson travelled courtesy of Spirit of Tasmania and Tourism Tasmania

Savvy travellers have long known the Spirit of Tasmania is the best way to get to Tassie. Drive the car on in Melbourne, crawl into bed after a hearty dinner on board and, before you know it, you’re driving off next morning at Devonport. Now, thanks to a $31.5 million upgrade, the good old SOT has been transformed from daggy to de rigueur. Day beds, polished timber floors and parlour palms evoke the golden age of travel on the upper decks, while a reading room, twin cinemas and swish new bistro give a touch of class to the main decks.
History blends with luxury at this painstakingly restored 19th-century cottage in the heart of Queenstown. Private rooms have soaring pressed-metal ceilings, romantic bay windows and spacious en suites with freestanding bath, fluffy robes and aromatic toiletries. Part panto, part great railways of the world, this trip into history is fun, informative and indulgent in equal measure. The 1896 railway that hauled ore from the world’s richest copper mine in Queenstown to the harbour at Strahan was an engineering marvel, traversing 40 bridges and climbing death-defying gradients through remote wilderness. These days, passengers ride the restored 35-kilometre route in style, sipping champagne as one of the original steam locomotives does all the hard work.

In a great part of town, across Toolern Creek from Melton Botanic Gardens and with walking paths and nature reserves just at the end of the street, this is an ideal family location at a great price point. The residence has four good-sized bedrooms, all with built-in wardrobes. They share an updated bathroom, which has a separate bath and glass shower. Glass sliding doors open from the dining-kitchen zone to an undercover area and the backyard, which has a fenced inground pool at one end. The kitchen has stone-topped benches, a wall oven with separate grill, a 900mm gas cooktop and dishwasher, loads of timber-clad cupboards, including a pantry. As for the rest of the house, there are polished floors underfoot here. The block of about 650 square metres, offers plenty of scope for green thumbs. A garden shed out back and single carport are other inclusions.
This modern ex-display house overlooking a reserve has plenty of space both inside and out. The interior boasts 2.7-metre ceilings, four bedrooms and two bathrooms. There’s a separate lounge and rumpus room and the family-meals area is large. The kitchen is fitted with a gas cooktop and an under-bench oven and has plenty of cupboard space, stone-topped benches, glass splashback and an island bench. There’s a paved dining area out the back and a double garage that was once an office has vinyl flooring and power access. Other features include ducted heating and cooling.

If there were prizes handed out for flawless presentation, this house and 4400-square-metre block would be at the top of the tree. The attention to detail in every aspect is remarkable and, consequently, liveability is at a high level. Wrapped in deep verandahs, the sprawling house has a latte and white colour palette, and period nods such as deep stepped cornices and skirts, high ceilings (some with ornate plaster), recycled oregon doors and window frames, a corbelled arch, bay windows and patterned dado walls. Otherwise, it’s a bright, contemporary place with lavish space.
A generous entry hall has, to the left through french doors, a carpeted room that could serve as sitting, play or TV room. Double doors opposite usher in the huge main bedroom which has a tiled, fitted dressing room and a period-style en suite with dual basins. Three more large bedrooms are in the east wing; two have walk-in wardrobes, the other a built-in. The nearby main bathroom has period styling and the toilet is separate. The vast, tiled living hub, with bay window forming the meals zone, incorporates a french provincial kitchen with oodles of white 2pac cabinetry,
charcoal granite benches (including a return island), walk-in pantry, 900mm cooker and dishwasher. The next-door laundry is really big and has a stack of stone-topped cabinetry. A cracker of a carpeted theatre room has a raised seating platform, cinema-style dimmable wall sconces and 7.1 surround-sound system. A study with an extra-long desk is across the way. Double doors from the living hub open to a fantastic outdoor room with a plaster vaulted ceiling above timber decking. It’s enclosed via pull-up shelter blinds which sit below leadlight decorative panels, and has

an outdoor kitchen with integrated barbecue and bar fridges. The manicured grounds include a gazebo, established gardens, a 68,000-litre water tank, automatic irrigation system, a two-bay shed, a freestanding double garage with alarm, and a massive Colorbond workshop with three-phase power. Ducted heating, evaporative cooling and a 5kW solar system are other perks at a place that neighbours the Werribee River and is equidistant from Bacchus Marsh and Melton. FOOD REVIEW
CONSIDER THE SAUCE There’s heat, but Kenny Weir isn’t staying out of the Kitchen Viet Kitchen is in the very heart of Vietnamese Footscray, sharing a block of Hopkins Street with such popular places as Sapa Hills and Bun Ta. In our search for the Good Stuff all over the west, we do sometimes overlook what’s right in the midst of the inner west. So it’s taken us a while to get around to Viet Kitchen, despite receiving a few reader recommendations in the past year or so. We end up awfully glad we’ve made the effort as we enjoy a really excellent meal. Like its neighbours, Viet Kitchen makes a bit more of an effort than formica tables – it’s a sweet space. Many of the customers seem to be regulars and we find the service and wait times to be fine. We like our regular spring rolls as served across the west as much as anyone, but my understanding is that in terms of the wrapping/ pastry used they are an adaptation devised by the Vietnamese diaspora. So when we spy the more authentic cha gio Viet Nam, we pounce. These six chopped-up rolls ($10.80) are fine, with a stuffing of seafood, pork and mushroom. The spicy beef noodle soup is a sinus-blasting hoot. And, yes, it IS spicy – though no more than any experienced Footscray food trawler will be able to handle. The “beef” tag is somewhat misleading as it refers only to the broth on which the dish is based. Also in the bowl, along with brisket,
VIET KITCHEN Address: 110 Hopkins Street, Footscray Phone: 8528 1112 are slices of pork and pork “ham” (sausage). With the attending greenery – its variety a nice change from the standard herb/sprouts mix that comes with pho – this a straight-up, all-out winner. Most Vietnamese restaurants in the west, it seems, based on our wide-ranging adventures, only serve their various coleslaw offerings in large, family sizes – as with the “farm chicken” ($23) version served here. So again we pounce when we see a smaller portion of the rare beef rendition ($10) on offer. It’s a zingy, tangy, crunchy wonder, with the plentiful and very good marinated beef still pink. Our only wish? Even more peanuts to really send the textural contrasts into overdrive. The Vietnamese pancake (with seafood, $16) is another successful order for us. Despite the wetness of the rather bland filling (small prawns, calamari, fish, sprouts), only some of the large pancake becomes soggy – and it all gets devoured with yet another variation in the greenery/herbs department. Kenny Weir is founder of Consider the Sauce, the definitive guide to eating in Melbourne’s western suburbs – www.considerthesauce.net

49 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 18, 2016
SPORT Fev’s Panthers bolster their stocks Melton South isn’t mucking around with its signings as it looks to raise itself from the bottom of the Ballarat Football League ladder. Having announced Brendan Fevola as playing co-coach, the Panthers last week named two gun onballers they hope will get the ball to him in the forward line. The first signing announcement was multiple league best and fairest winner Mark Lynch. Lynch has twice won the Essendon District Football League Dick Reynolds Medal for the premier division’s best player, first with Essendon Doutta Stars in 2012 and then with Aberfeldie in its undefeated 2015 premiership year. He was also originally named joint winner of the Northern Football League’s Frank Rosbrook Trophy with Cameron Cloke in 2013. An administrative error in the round one votes later saw him stripped of the trophy.
Panthers co-coach Sean Triplett said Lynch was the type of player they had been looking for. “He’s an elite midfielder with elite running capabilities,” he said. “He’s a real professional and one of the best midfielders going round. He’s a winner and knows what’s required.” Triplett said it was a case of the right timing to induce Lynch to make the move from Aberfeldie. “I’ve just followed his football over the years,” he said. “He has a young daughter and is about to get married, and he wants to finish his footy in country footy. “Just the luck for us. The idea of playing with ‘Fev’ is something he loved. The idea of finishing at Melton South and creating something from nothing interested him.”
Late last week, the club announced the signing of Shannon Broadbent. Like Lynch, Broadbent is a best and fairest winner. Broadbent won the Western Region Football League’s Barry Priest Medal in 2013. Broadbent has tasted premiership success more than most, having played in seven grand finals for seven premierships. Last season, he played at Westmeadows and then Kangaroo Flat. Broadbent’s step brother, Jordan Madafferi, already plays for the Panthers. Triplett said they were expecting to announce some more key signings in coming weeks. Tara Murray Mark Lynch will add experience to Melton South’s midfield. (Darren Howe)
Devils sign key recruits By Tara Murray Darley has moved quickly to reinforce its midfield stocks for next year’s Ballarat Football League season. With last year’s league best and fairest winner Steve Kennedy and former AFL player Mitch Banner not returning for next season, the club is looking to fill the void left by their departures. Football manager Craig Baker said adding midfield depth was the key off-season aim, with Wyndhamvale brothers Chris and Brian Graham and Lorne’s Don Roy joining the club. Chris is a premiership-winning captain with Wyndhamvale while Brian won three league best and fairest awards while playing in the North Gippsland Football League before joining the Falcons last season. Roy will be playing assistant coach to Heath Scotland. It was a relationship between Scotland and the Grahams’ brother, Nick, that proved to be the key to getting them across. “Heath played at Carlton with Nick,” Baker said. “With us losing Steve and Mitch, we had to replace those two onballers. We’re lucky enough to get them to sign on [last] weekend. Both will step straight into the side.” The club has also announced that Brad Inglis is back after not playing last season, and Lochie Herring is returning to the club. “Brad won our best and fairest award in 2012 before he broke his leg really badly,” Baker said. “He came back and played but still had a crack in one of the bones. “He’s been out since then and didn’t play last year. He went through what training and work load would be required to get back on to the field and said he could do it.” The club is in talks with other players. Baker said the arrival of the Grahams and Roy, and hopefully the return of skipper Shane Page and defender Darren Leonard, who both missed a big chunk of last season through injury, would help the club rise back up the ladder. After winning the 2015 premiership, the Devils finished sixth this year, going out in the first week of the finals. The departure of Kennedy to Altona is a big one, but Baker said the club’s best and fairest winner this season had been up front with them. “He had been talking to us for a while and he indicated that while he enjoyed the club, he wanted to go back to his home club and play for them,” Baker said. “We’re more than happy for him and happy with the service he gave us during his three years at the club.” 50 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 18, 2016
Darley coach aims high New Darley Netball Club coach Renee Hulls is hoping to help her new club continue to push up the Ballarat Netball League ladder. The Devils made big strides this year, finishing with seven wins, up from four the year before, and showed that for long periods of games they could match it with the top sides. Hulls, who coached Melton this year, said her role would allow her to develop as a coach. “At the end of last season, their [Darley’s] co-ordinator [Marika Barnes] asked me if I’d be interested in going across as a head coach, as she wanted to step down from coaching,” Hulls said. “She wanted to know whether I’d be interested in taking over the whole coaching program. “It’s pretty much what I want to do – I want to develop coaches … want to take the club to the next level.” Hulls will play in the A-grade side, while coaching the As and Bs and overseeing the whole program. Barnes, who coached the A-grade side this year, will remain on as netball co-ordinator. Hulls, who moved across from the Riddell District Netball League last season, knows what to expect next year. “It was a big step up from the RDNL,” she said. “Watching the finals series this year, in respect to East Point and North Ballarat City, we sort of know where we have to take the netball and that’s what I’m looking forward to with Darley. “Hopefully, stepping up next year and being a finals contender next year.” Hulls said she was excited about what she has seen of the A-grade side this year, especially in the goaling circle where she will play. Hulls said the club was looking at recruiting some new players while ensuring it continued to bring talent through from the junior program. “The recruitment phase starts at this time of year for every club,” she said. “Our trials are yet to be announced but pre-season will start November 24. “We’re looking forward to anyone interested in coming across and playing with Darley.” Tara Murray
Brian Graham and his brother Chris have joined Darley. (Shawn Smits)

Royals rule the pitch By Tara Murray Melton South Primary School Cricket Club is on top after day one of its Victorian Turf Cricket Association west A1 clash with Bellbridge. After having to wait a week to take to the field after the opening round was postponed, the Royals enjoyed a fine day. Bellbridge looked to be in control early at 1-41 before it lost three wickets without scoring a run. It lost another not long after and was in trouble at 5-49. Bellbridge never recovered and was bowled out for just 113. Two players made 21 – but they were the highest scores for the innings. James Robertson was the best of the bowlers, taking five wickets. The Royals will resume at 2-57 after negotiating 21 overs at the end of day one. Skipper Paul Hetherington is 24 not out. In other matches, Melton Centrals had a field day with the bat in making 9-297 off its overs. Gellibrand was wasteful with the ball, conceding a massive 54 extras. In north A2, Caroline Springs looked dangerous with the bat, making 6-281 off its overs. Opening pair Dave Martin and Jackson Mills put on 137, setting the tone for the rest of the innings. Mills made 103 and Martin 70. Sydenham-Hillside, in its first match on turf, will be hoping for a couple of early wickets on day two against Sunshine YCW. Batting first, Sydenham-Hillside made 158 and started well with the ball, taking 3-12 at the end of day one.

Coach to saddle up again with Thoroughbreds John Allison has returned home to the Melton Basketball Association. Having coached the Thoroughbreds’ women’s side to a Big V division 3 championship in 2008, Allison has taken on the same role at the Melbourne Tigers. Approached to take on Melton’s division 1 men’s coaching role for next season, Allison found he couldn’t say “no” a second time. “They’d approached me some time ago and I’d been thinking about it,” he said. “About a month ago they approached me again and I realised I had to come back to Melton at some point, and everything aligned. “I spoke with my wife and kids, and decided to take the role on.” Allison replaces Julie McCallum, who took over coaching halfway through the season when the club parted ways with Grant Spencer.
Allison says he’s excited to be returning to the Thoroughbreds. “I had to learn some more stuff before coming back. I’d coached local clubs and juniors at Melton but never a men’s side at this level. I’ll see if I can bring some new things back to the club.” The Thoroughbreds were knocked out of this year’s semi-finals, after winning the championship the previous season. The coach expects most of the playing group to return next season, with possibly just two exclusions. “One of the players, Cameron McCallum, is trying to play SEABL and I think that he should and will play,” Allison said. “My son Blake is going to state championship side Werribee. They both need to play at the higher level.” Allison said while he would have liked to
coach Blake, going to Werribee was best for his career. His other son, Liam, who played youth league this year, could be one of several youth league players to get a chance in the senior side. “Most definitely, there’s a couple of guys I’ve pencilled in I’d like to get some games into. Some might have a larger role in the division 1 team than in youth league.” Allison said that, like most teams, they were on the lookout for a big man to fill the centre position. “It would be nice to get a monster in the time who’s 6-foot-9, 10 or 11, to take up a lot of space and get rebounds and blocks. “They don’t seem to grow on trees at this end of town, but we are talking to someone at the moment. We’ll see how that pans out.” Tara Murray
Melton rally falls short By Tara Murray A late comeback from Melton in Bowls Victoria division 1 section 1 on Saturday wasn’t enough to produce a win. Melton trailed heading into the tea break but rallied to level the scores before Sunbury won the last three ends to secure a 79 (13)-74 (5) win. Melton secretary John Adams said it wasn’t a complete disaster. “We were a fair way down at tea and to get back to level was a good result,” he said. “In the end, to take five points away isn’t the worst results and a total wipe-out. The greens were really good, but the wind meant you couldn’t get a read on your shots. “We had one of our skippers out, David George. I’m not saying it would have changed the result, but he normally skippers the rink that lost.” The result leaves Melton with a win and a loss from two rounds. It sits fourth on the ladder with 21 points. In the opening round, the side enjoyed an upset win against Moonee Valley. “Some people thought we may struggle against them, but we didn’t look like losing,” Adams said. He said the aim for the top team this season was to make the finals. He said players lost in the off-season had been replaced. “It’s our sixth year in metro bowls, coming across from the Central Highlands,” he said. “This year we have teams in division 1, 2 and 3 [and 6 and 7]. When we started we had teams in division 3, 4 and 6. We’ve come a long way in five years. “We’ll be trying to get all five teams in finals, especially the top team. “In division 2 and 3, I think we should stay away from relegation … if we can make finals in those two divisions and with our division 1 team, we’ll be happy.” In the Central Highlands Bowls, Bacchus Marsh picked up its first win of the division 1 season. Facing Romsey, Bacchus Marsh had the opportunity to win all four rinks, but fell just short with three wins and a drawn rink. It won 134 (17)-83 (1), with Justin Webster’s rink enjoying a massive 44-12 win. In division 2, Diggers Rest defeated Bacchus Marsh 95 (14)-86 (4), while Mt Cottrell couldn’t match it with Kyneton, losing 119 (6)-64 (2). Bacchus Marsh forfeited in division 3, while Mt Cottrell lost to Woodend 79 (14)-62 (2).

Lions flounder in opening loss Melton Lions suffered a first-up loss to Bayswater in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association’s east-west competition. Originally scheduled as a two-day match, it became a one-dayer after the opening day was cancelled due to not enough pitches being ready for play. Winning the toss, the Lions struggled to get partnerships going. Each time they looked like they were getting on a run, they would lose a wicket. They were in trouble at 5-70. Playing coach Nathan Geisler and Ashley Sweet put together a partnership of 48 to push the score up near the 120 mark before Sweet fell for 20. The Lions then lost their last five wickets for 32 to be all out for 152 on the final ball. Geisler top-scored with 51. After the loss of an early wicket, Bayswater did it with ease, passing the target with three wickets down. Dylan Clarke took two wickets for the Lions. The Lions’ seconds also suffered a first-up loss. Batting first, the Lions could make just 9-132 off their 40 overs. Bayswater chased down the total with ease, making the runs with 18 overs and nine wickets to spare. Melton’s firsts will host its first home match of the season on Saturday, taking on Box Hill. Where there’s a Wil there’s a way to guaranteed service Wil’s Auto workshop is staffed by qualified, experienced and hard-working professionals, who make sure their customers get the best motor vehicle services in the west. Owner and head mechanic Brett Williams guarantees competitive prices and family-friendly customer service. “My focus is to provide customers with exceptional service,” he says. “The workshop is a large space and we use modern equipment. “I can assure customers that the quality of work being undertaken here will more than satisfy them,” says Brett. Originally known as Willy’s Auto, the business was opened by Brett’s father, Garry Williams, on Coburn’s Road more than 20 years ago. The business moved to Melton Valley, and after he qualified as a mechanic, Brett took over the reins from his dad and renamed the business Wil’s Auto. “We have a few customers who still come to us from when the business was at Melton South, more than 15 years ago,” he says. “Nowadays, we have the ability to offer services, repairs, roadworthies and performance checks, as well as repairs to bikes, cars, light commercials, diesel, LPG-fuelled vehicles and trucks. “And we specialise in new car warranty and gas servicing, disc and drum machining, brakes, exhaust and suspension upgrades, clutch and EFI repairs, and tuning and injector cleaning.” With plenty of off-street parking available, all vehicles are secured when on site, stored in the locked workshop area. “We also offer customer pick-up and drop-off services in the Melton area,” says Brett. Wil’s Auto, at 1/17 Harrison Court, Melton, opens 8am-5.30pm Monday–Friday or via appointment. Inquiries 9747 8004 or www.wilsauto.com.au
