Night of the zombies Kids, get ready for the Zombie Apocalypse. Dozens of young zombies will be dragging their rotten limbs across the Public Hall on Saturday. So, are you ready to face the walking dead? FReeZA youth committee, Marsh Monster Mash and Moorabool council have teamed up to organise Zombie Walk. ‘Little spooks’ (children under 12) will take over the Bacchus Marsh Public Hall from 4-6pm on Saturday and the ‘spooks’ (children over 12) from 7-10pm. Social and organisational development manager Danny Colgan says it will be a “fantastic” event. “The young people from FReeZA have put a lot of effort into making it a spectacular, scary and fun-filled evening,” Mr Colgan said. There will be special-effects lighting and sound, and would-be zombies can get a hand from professional makeup artists. Mr Colgan adds that people dressed in scary clown costumes won’t be admitted. Entry is $10. Sumeyya Ilanbey

$10.6m hospital pledge By Sumeyya Ilanbey Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital has been given more than $10 million to overhaul its health services. Health Minister Jill Hennessy pledged the funds last Friday, saying the state government is committed to, and confident in, the hospital. Two new operating theatres will be built, old theatres will be refurbished, and maternity units expanded, including four extra post-delivery beds and a new, three-bay nursery. Ms Hennessy said she had “absolute confidence and optimism” in the future of maternity services at the hospital. “We wouldn’t be investing this money if

’’

we didn’t have the confidence in this health service, and I’ve got every confidence,” she said. “I know each and every single day, the staff come into work full of care and clinical expertise. And they want the best outcomes for their local community.” Meanwhile, John Ballard has been reappointed administrator of Djerriwarrh Health Services, which manages the Bacchus

Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital, for another 12 months. Dr Ballard was appointed administrator last year after the hospital’s board was sacked amid controversy over baby deaths. Two new community advisory committees will be set up at Melton and Bacchus Marsh to ensure local voices are heard. The committees will be chaired by Melton MP Don Nardella. Dr Ballard said the $10.6 million boost was an “emphatic” sign that rumours about Bacchus Marsh hospital closing down were incorrect “We need to emphasise to the community, we’re providing a safe service – they’re really good services and they’re services that are staying,” Dr Ballard said.

“There were these unfortunate tragic, adverse events and they happened, but they happened in the past … that doesn’t diminish them in anyway whatsoever, but as a health service, we’ve gone through enormous change.” Dr Ballard said the state government’s commitment to overhauling hospital services was “uplifting” for staff, who have worked “unrelentingly” to provide excellent professional care for patients. Djerriwarrh Health Services chief executive Andrew Freeman said the funding was a “vote of confidence” in staff for local residents. Construction works on the operating theatres and the maternity unit are expected to start mid next year.

Guns, ammo seized in crackdown By Sumeyya Ilanbey Hundreds of rounds of ammunition and dozens of firearms were seized during a police operation in Melton earlier this month. Officers from Caroline Springs police, Melton Crime Investigation Unit and the Williamstown district firearms officer, visited 37 rural properties around the shire, speaking to licensed firearm holders. Senior Sergeant Danny Trevaglini said Operation Random ran over two days, on October 11 and 12, with police checking on

licence compliance. As a result, 25 firearms were seized and seven were voluntarily surrendered. Most of the firearms seized were long-arms weapons, such as shotguns and rifles. Senior Sergeant Trevaglini said four people had been charged with a number of offences, including failing to comply with their licence conditions. They will appear on summons in court at a later date. Meanwhile, police suspended the licences of two people. Senior Sergeant Trevaglini said no particular threats, or increase in gun violence across the

state, had prompted the check-up operation. “Quite often we do checks – unannounced checks – to ensure people are compliant with their licence conditions,” Senior Sergeant Trevaglini said. “Caroline Springs has got a large rural area, and it was just due.” Senior Sergeant Trevaglini said it is important people properly store their firearms and ammunition. An old-school locker with a padlock just isn’t sufficient or appropriate, he said. “If you’ve got any queries, either ring your local police or the district firearms office –

these checks will continue, and they’re random. We’re making sure people are compliant with their licence conditions, so these guns don’t end up in the wrong hands,” he said. Meanwhile, an Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission report on guns revealed there could be as many as 260,000 illegal weapons circulating among criminals, and urged a national gun amnesty program. But numbers of illegal guns could run as high as 600,000, if a United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime formula to estimate the number of illegal weapons in any given country is used.

Police warn clown stalkers Police are warning people against dressing up in scary clown costumes ahead of a planned “clown purge” in Caroline Springs next month. Administrators of a Melbournededicated clown Facebook page posted a photo earlier this month, warning people clowns would be coming to Caroline Springs, Point Cook, Docklands, Melbourne and Mill Park. The clown craze, which involves people dressing up as a clown and stalking the streets in an attempt to threaten and intimidate others, emerged recently in the US and is being replicated worldwide. Victoria Police spokeswoman Kelly Grindley said a number of arrests had been made across the state, including Warnambool, Moe, Mildura and Melbourne. She said people could face a two-year jail sentence for possessing an article of disguise. “We understand that some people are getting involved for a bit of fun, but … this behaviour is not amusing and, in many cases, it is criminal behaviour,” Ms Grindley said. “Victoria Police does not tolerate intimidation, the incitement of fear or the carrying of weapons.” Earlier this month, Keilor Downs College was on high alert after social media posts warned that clowns were expected to pay the school a visit. Police said the incident wasn’t clownrelated, but officers found a mask hanging over a passenger seat of a car parked near the school. If you have information relating to the clown craze, call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Art keeps dog in the picture Melanie Newman loves primping pooches and preening poodles. The Kurunjang woman was awarded third place at last week’s Pet Industry Association of Australia’s pet grooming competition, GroomEx, in the ‘poodle class’. Ms Newman was given two hours to groom her poodle, and the hardest part, she says, was trying to create what you’ve visualised. “We have to make sure the poodle looks like a poodle, the scissoring is all even, and the clipper works nice and neat,” Ms Newman says. “The hardest part is getting the profile you want – so thinking about how you want something to look, to actually coming out in your scissor work.” The award-winning groomer of 16 years has competed in more than 45 competitions over this time. She won best in show at last year’s GroomEx competitions, and has previously represented Australia in dog-grooming competitions worldwide. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Feathers found a’plenty Melton has an amazing array of bird life – from the majestic wedge-tailed eagles to the tiny diamond firetails. So, it’s only fitting these wild and native birds are celebrated – whether they cluck, chirp, crow or hoot. As part of National Bird Week, Melton council and the Melton Environment Group have made sure there are plenty of events to educate, inform and entertain locals curious about the resident birdlife. Still on over the next two days will be a storytime session for two-to-five year-olds at Eynesbury Discovery Centre.

Tomorrow, there will be a talk about baby birds and nests with Nora Peters. Melton council chief executive Kel Tori said the sessions are designed to inspire residents to get involved with bird conservation and habitat protection efforts. “The National Bird Week events being held locally give residents a chance to learn about our birds and conservation in unusual and innovative ways, such as night walks and interactive museum displays,” Mr Tori said. Big spender cites lobbying costs By Sumeyya Ilanbey A Moorabool councillor has defended a yearly expense bill that’s as high as the total of all other six councillors combined. Woodlands ward councillor Pat Toohey racked up $6675 in expenses in the past financial year, which included a $1802 telephone bill and $4873 in training fees. The mayors at the time, councillors Paul Tatchell and Allan Comrie, were reimbursed $2424 and $1826, respectively, for their expenses. Cr Toohey said his “lobbying expertise” had required him to attend conferences and lobby

for funding for council projects. He said he had been attending national roads conferences for several years and had been successful in lobbying the state and federal governments to commit to funding for the Halletts Way project. “I had discussions with relevant ministers at the conferences and that’s the time when you can get some time with them,” Cr Toohey said. “We were able to discuss [building] the Halletts Way ramps.” Cr Toohey said he also visited Canberra with Moorabool council chief executive Rob Croxford to convince the federal governments to invest money in the Parwan Employment

Precinct. “A lot of these things take three or four years – lobbying, putting forward information, building relationships with bureaucrats and ministers, trying to put forward the community’s needs. “In some cases, it’s the area of your expertise and your area of lobbying that requires you to travel. All my expenses are directly related to pursuing policy, pursuing outcomes in regards to better roads, better infrastructure and success in gaining funding for probably multi-million dollars.” Cr Toohey said attending conferences and building relationships with ministers and senior advisers was “invaluable”.

The sole Woodlands ward councillor also racked up an almost-$2000 phone bill in the past financial year, attributing the high figure to “calling people back”. Cr Toohey said he took the “personal approach” of communicating with people. “I ring them to see what their issue is and that’s proven to resolve their issues more successfully than several emails to and fro,” he said. Cr David Edwards was reimbursed $141, Cr Tom Sullivan $1327, Cr Tonia Dudzik $514 and Cr John Spain $519 for their expenses in the past financial year. They were all for telephone bills.

Food for future leaders Annalise, Evan and Ella are today’s children, but tomorrow’s leaders. So it’s important they learn about sustainable living and caring for the planet, Springside Kindergarten educational leader Lucy Charters says. For the past year, youngsters have been planting vegetables and herbs in the school garden, saving energy indoors, and sorting out compost from landfill rubbish. For its focus on sustainability – indoors and out – the kindergarten has been nominated for a Sustainability Victoria ResourceSmart Schools award. Winners will be announced on Friday, November 11, and Ms Charters is hopeful. “We’ve done a lot of work, inside and outside,” she says. “We’ve had a lot of plants and herbs donated through Bunnings, and the kids helped

plant those. We have sustainability monitors, so children are responsible for turning the lights off, checking taps, encouraging each other to be more resourceful. “They’re the changemakers – they’re the future.” Ms Charters says children have really enjoyed helping with food preparation, even sorting out the rubbish from what can be composted and what can be used in the school worm farm. “Since he was diagnosed, I’ve learned more and more about cancer and tumours,” 15-year-old Mahala says. “I’ve done lots of research … one of the things I’ve learned is that brain tumour is the most common form of solid tumour … and they kill more children than any other disease.” To help cancer patients and research into a cure, Mahala chopped off about 35 centimetres of her blonde locks at the weekend. Her hair will be donated to children’s charity Variety, to make wigs for cancer patients.

Mahala says she wants to thank the medical staff for looking after Nathan and to do her part to help the fight against cancer. “My brother was put on a trial drug by a company that helped fund the drug,” Mahala says. “I hope the [fundraising] money will help with treatments, and research in general, because it is a pretty big issue.” To donate to Mahala’s cause, visit gofundme. com/2qcwuetw. Ambos closer to critical target

‘‘

We’ve got new vehicles, new and upgraded - Anthony Carlyon branches

’’

Nearby municipalities Brimbank and Wyndham fared much better, with 78.7 per cent and 72.6 per cent, respectively, of Code 1 call-outs being responded to within 15 minutes. The state government last year released the Working with paramedics to end the ambulance crisis report, which revealed ambulance response times for Code 1 call-outs had increased substantially since 2008. The report stated there was a need for better integration of ambulance services and the broader health system, better support for paramedics at Ambulance Victoria and improvements to ambulance call and dispatch systems.

(Luke Hemer)

Ambulance Victoria is failing to meet its 15-minute response targets in Melton and Moorabool, but says its performance in the region is improving significantly each year. Only 51.8 per cent of Code 1 (time critical) call-outs in Moorabool were responded to in under 15 minutes – the state government benchmark – in the past financial year. The average response time for the 1561 Code 1 call-outs was 16.41 minutes, according to Ambulance Victoria’s annual report. While response times and rates were slightly better in Melton – 69.3 per cent of Code 1 call-outs were responded to in under 15 minutes, with the average response time being 13.46 minutes – Ambulance Victoria metro west director Anthony Carlyon conceded more needed to be done to meet targets and community expectations. He said demand for services in Melton and Moorabool had increased in the past three years, but paramedics were responding to Code 1 call-outs faster. “In 2012-13, our average response time for Code 1 cases in Moorabool was 18 minutes, 42 seconds,” Mr Carlyon said. “This has [been] significantly reduced, with average Code 1 response times in 2015-16 down to 16 minutes, 41 seconds.” He said paramedics responded to an extra 1660 Code 1 cases in Melton in the past financial year compared with 2012-13.

“However, our Code 1 response time has significantly improved by more than two minutes on average – from 15 minutes, 52 seconds in 2012-13, down to 13 minutes, 46 seconds last year,” he said. “This improvement would not happen without the reforms we are undertaking. “We’ve got new vehicles, new and upgraded branches and dispatch grid reform, which ensures patients get the most appropriate care for their condition.”

Melton South Primary School assistant principal Natalie Sadler said the cup was displayed at the school gym for an hour on Friday. “The students were very excited,” she said. “I wish we could have kept it for longer than an hour, as there were arguments over who gets to have their photographs taken in front of it.” Sumeyya Ilanbey

CEO pours cold water on trial

‘‘

We need to make sure our water management is - Lisa Neville prepared

It includes plans to expand the water grid, modernise existing water infrastructure and improve water delivery efficiency across the state. Ms Neville said there would be “greater transparency” in the water market, to give customers the information they need to make the best decisions. “Water is critical to our health and wellbeing, the environment and the Victorian economy,” Ms Neville said. “As we deal with issues around climate change and population growth, we need to make sure our water management is prepared to meet these challenges, now and for future generations.” To view the report, visit delwp.vic.gov.au/ water/a-new-water-plan-for-victoria.

(Luke Hemer)

An open market for trading water will disadvantage rural communities and force councils to bid for water as a commercial commodity, Moorabool council believes. The state government last week released Water for Victoria – a policy framework that examines how to make better use of alternative, fit-for-purpose water supplies. Open market trading will be trialled in southern Victoria to “harness the potential of the water grid and enable water to move where it is most valuable”, the state government said. But Moorabool council chief executive Rob Croxford said this approach would unfairly advantage high-value croppers and big business, which will be able to trade and transfer water across the state. “It is of concern that this will disadvantage community uses, whether local, passive and active recreation, or water-based activities, that will not have the resources to bid,” Mr Croxford said in his submission to the new framework. “This will impact on local government and see councils potentially entering the market to secure supplies for sporting reserves, against agricultural and commercial operations.” Mr Croxford said the council is concerned water will cost more in rural Victoria, impacting most on traditional farming and smaller communities. “On the plus side, it is pleasing to see an intent to invest more in riparian zones, river health and environmental flows,” Mr Croxford said.

The plan includes $537 million over the next four years for projects that strengthen water security, protect agriculture, recognise Aboriginal water values, and improve the environmental health of waterways. It also includes a $58 million investment for rural water system upgrades at Wedderburn, Bacchus Marsh and Werribee. Water for Victoria is the first comprehensive statewide water policy in more than a decade, Water Minister Lisa Neville said.

Ambitions undented A Bacchus Marsh woman went head to head with some of the nation’s most talented fashion students earlier this month. And although 20-year-old Amelia Williamson didn’t take out any gongs, she says it was a chance to learn and upskill. More than 500 young Australians, representing 60 skills, competed at the 2016 WorldSkills national competition earlier this month in a bid to represent Australia on an international level in the United Arab Emirates next year. Ms Williamson was judged on a range of skills, including pattern-making, sewing and design. “The hardest part was not knowing what to expect,” she says. “For the first task of the

day, I thought I’d be alright because I’ve done this a million times, but you’re under so much pressure. You have to think on the spot and pull yourself together if it doesn’t work out; there’s not a moment to spare.” Ms Williamson says she was time-poor prior to the competitions and couldn’t prepare as well as she would have liked. “I wouldn’t say I was satisfied, but it’s made me want to do better, push myself further. I’m proud I made it there, but in another way it’s not enough.” Ms Williamson hopes to eventually run her own business, dressing musicians and creating a daywear brand. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Ballan hospital push for funds An expansion of Ballan District Health Care could lead to the creation of more than 70 jobs if funding for the works can be achieved. Ballan District Health Care chief executive Wayne Weaire took plans for the Ballan Hospital upgrade to Canberra’s Parliament House last week. The upgrade would provide an additional 51 beds for the aged-care facility, construction of a day procedure unit with two theatres, and a doubling in capacity of the onsite childcare centre. Mr Weaire’s visit was part of an attempt to persuade both federal and Victorian

governments to invest in the three upgrade projects. He said the projects, once completed, would deliver an additional 77 local jobs and inject $10.65 million into the regional economy each year. “These three projects will make Ballan Hospital’s model of integrated services, incorporating aged and childcare onsite, one of the few community-funded hospitals financially sustainable in Australia,” Mr Weaire said. “This innovative model has the potential to be a game changer and disrupt the way that rural health care is funded and provided in future. The projects are also essential to enable

Ballan Hospital to manage the increasing demand for health and care services in the Moorabool region.” Moorabool deputy mayor Paul Tatchell accompanied Mr Weaire to Canberra last week to speak with ministers about the consequences if the Ballan Hospital upgrades were not funded. Cr Tatchell said that following an $8 million loss to the region’s economy and loss of employment opportunities due to the permanent closure of the Fiskville CFA training centre, it was important the region’s next biggest employer was not overlooked.

“Investment into Ballan District Health Care will help restore economic prosperity to our community and support a model hospital for rural health provision,” he said. Cr Tatchell said the area had long been overlooked and no funding had been allocated to the hospital upgrades since plans were unveiled last December. “It’s frustrating because they are real needs,” he said. “The sad reality is country people cannot live off six per cent of the [infrastructure] budget.” – Alicia Thomas, Ballarat Courier

High dive for great cause One in four pregnancies in Australia end in miscarriage. And another 3000 babies are either stillborn or die shortly after birth. Kurunjang woman Melanie Farrugia wants to do something for families devastated by the loss of their hopes and dreams. Ms Farrugia says she has a fear of flying, but is prepared to take the plunge – literally – and skydive to raise money for Sands. Sands (an acronym for stillbirth and neonatal death) is a not-for-profit organisation that provides support and information to parents, families and healthcare professionals. “I have a phobia of flying, but this is a charity close to a lot of people’s hearts, including mine,” Ms Farrugia says. “So I am stepping out of my comfort zone in memory of a lot of friends’ lost babies.” Miscarriages, stillbirths and newborn deaths are still taboo topics, Ms Farrugia says.

She hopes this will eventually change as it’s important for others to talk about how they feel and to know they’re not alone. “I am hoping to make a difference, and with the help of others, raise some funds so that Sands can continue to support parents at such a devastating time.” Ms Farrugia will be hosting a ladies’ night on Friday, October 28, 6.30-10.30pm, and a family market day on Sunday, October 30, 11am-4pm, at Melton Tabcorp Park. All money raised through the raffles at the events will go to Sands. Snakes out and about By Sumeyya Ilanbey Melton and Moorabool residents are being reminded that snake season has well and truly started. Tiger and brown snakes – two of the most venomous snakes – have been spotted in Caroline Springs, Melton and Eynesbury recently. Snake catcher Stewart Gatt said despite cooler weather compared to this time last year, snakes have been out since September. “The heat has started a little bit later, but this is perfect snake weather,” he said.

“Snakes don’t like it too hot, so anything around 20 degrees, the snakes are going to be out and active.” Mr Gatt said most residential properties where snakes are spotted back onto wetlands or paddocks. People are being urged to clean up around their properties, keep their lawns mown, and yards tidy. But, that’s not necessarily a foolproof method of keeping snakes away, Mr Gatt said. “Snakes will need to get from A to B to get a feed. Now if point A is a paddock and point B is three houses down from the paddock,

the snake will go through all the houses. It doesn’t always mean that because you’ve got a clean yard, snakes aren’t going to come. The difference is going to be that they’re not going to have any cover to hide under … it makes it easier for you to spot a snake.” Melton Veterinary Clinic senior veterinary nurse Kimberley Norton said some of the species of dangerous snakes found around Melton include brown, tiger, copperhead and red-bellied black snakes. Melton council is offering a free snake catching program. Call 9747 7200. It is illegal to kill snakes.

Kristen, Jacqueline, Natalie, Michaela and Micaela can’t wait to see their masterpieces hanging at the new Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital at Sunshine. The Creekside College pupils have been painting murals that will be hung on the new hospital’s hoardings. Principal Rosa Marchionda says about a dozen pupils from years 3,4,5,6 and 9 spent several lunchtimes exploring their creative flair. “They had to interpret healthy and happy communities,” Ms Marchionda said. “We’ve got lots of talented kids and it’s important for them to be able to showcase their work on a bigger stage.” The first sod for the $200 million hospital was turned at the weekend. Free food service robbed The theft of two trailers threatened the viability of a voluntary free food service in Melton last week. Thieves broke into the Combined Churches Caring Foodbank overnight last Thursday, stealing a large and small trailer. Foodbank manager Denise Morris said the larger of the two trailers was found a few days later, along with mops, kitchen cabinets, tools and laundry cupboards – none of which belonged to the foodbank. But the second trailer – a white, 6x4 model with an airbrushed Combined Churches Caring logo emblazoned on its side – is still missing. “Somebody found one of the trailers at the front of their place on Friday night,” Ms Morris said. “It seemed like quite an opportunistic theft. “They [thieves] stole the kitchen cupboards from a nearby house, and it was just a matter of the trailer being nearby.” Ms Morris said if the larger trailer hadn’t been found, it would’ve been a massive blow to the foodbank. “We wouldn’t have been able to get the food … or we would have had to cut down dramatically on the amount of food we could provide.” The foodbank has been burgled several times in recent years. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Sumeyya Ilanbey

MY PLACE Leah Christie says she’s made an egg-cellent choice moving down to Mt Egerton from Queensland. The Egg-erton Free Range Eggs owner speaks with Sumeyya Ilanbey about life on the farm.

I live in Mt Egerton and have been here for three years. We moved down from Queensland, which was a big shock, I guess. My husband got a work offer … and then my mother moved and she was miserable, missing everybody, so we decided we’d do it and come down. What’s your favourite thing about living in Moorabool? I like the country. I love the peace and quiet and everyone in town is friendly. When we first moved we were looking more around the Bacchus Marsh area. We didn’t want to come out too far from Laverton, where my husband works, but we couldn’t find anything we wanted so we stretched ourselves to Mt Egerton. What would you change about the area if you could?

Melbourne hasn’t converted you into a coffee drinker? [Laughs] I don’t even like the smell of it. I’m not really a tea or coffee person. How did you get involved with the egg farm? I sort of just got some chickens to have some eggs. And then people at my husband’s work started asking for eggs. He started selling more than I could produce so I got some more chickens. Everything just fell into place. I was reading about a mobile chicken farm in the newspaper; I looked into it, did a course and then ordered my first hundred chickens. This was only about 18 months ago. I really enjoy it. I’m a homebody. I love the bush and acreage so I don’t feel the need to get out of my place and go into town. What’s the hardest thing about managing a chicken farm?

I would just like to see a few more shops around. Ballan’s our closest with shops, and Gordon’s only got a milkbar that’s not open all the time. I miss just being able to go to a few different shops at any time.

With this wet weather, keeping the damn eggs clean. It’s so muddy at the moment so I’m constantly cleaning them. We’re setting up our sheds in a different way so the eggs won’t need that much cleaning – it’ll probably save me about two or three hours a day.

Where’s your favourite place to hang out in Moorabool?

What’s your favourite egg dish to make and eat?

I quite like the new Zest cafe in Ballan. I don’t drink coffee, actually, but they make a good hot chocolate.

I like quiches, any sort of quiches. And it’s gotta be free-range eggs, of course; otherwise the taste’s not right.

(Luke Hemer)

Darwin to Adelaide on a luxury train By John Huxley, via The Age Silhouetted against infinite blue skies and a dusty, red background, surrounded by old friends such as Bernie the Buffalo, Tin Shaker the Brahmin cow and Cecil the Mule, Tom Curtain climbs atop an old favourite, “Legend the Trick Horse”. From the centre of one of several stockyards – hung with boards bearing messages such as “You’re in cattle country… eat meat, you bastard” – he plays his guitar, banging out a few tracks from his award-winning album Smack Bang Bang. Earlier, he has held a big, predominantly townie audience, entranced as, before our eyes, he breaks in a wild horse with a mix of cajolery, gentle pushes and prods, rewards and, of course, whispers. Clearly, Legend is, in the words of celebrity chefs, “one I prepared earlier”: he and Tom make a moving double act. Or triple, if his attractive, hard-working cowgirl partner Annabel Mclarty is included. They, their animals – and, it seems, the noisy jets from the nearby Tindal air base – are all part of the Katherine Outback Experience. Like the alternative, “dreamtime” river cruise-walk, up the nearby Nitmiluk Gorge, the outback experience offers a glimpse of the slow-beating heart of Australia from a stopping train. The magnificent. The luxurious. The historic. The Ghan. Katherine is just the first stop on a memorable, three-night, four-day, 2979-kilometre trip from Darwin to Adelaide, on a 902-metre-long train that, in the course of a year, travels 369,000 kilometres, serves 585,000 meals and – a private interest – 23,000 cans of Coke. Throughout its trip, the train offers 330 or so guests not just a measure of ingeniously

engineered comfort, good company, cheerful service and fine dining, but a cultural, historical and, in the burning-hot, backblocks of Coober Pedy, an underground experience. As The Ghan guest brochure notes approvingly, famous travel writer and train

enthusiast Paul Theroux, author of The Great Railway Bazaar, once suggested, “our dreams often begin with a consciousness of exotic place names”. In Australia – described hereabouts by one guide as “the land beyond the horizon” – few

place names come more exotic than that of Coober Pedy, a name which comes from the local, Aboriginal term “kupa-piti”. It means, roughly, “boys in a hole”: possibly waterhole, or possibly a hole dug by those who have come in their tens of thousands in search

They include, from north to south, Muchaty, Illoquara, Coondambo, Pimba, Bookaloo, Hesso, Crystal Brook, Rocky River, Dry Creek. It was not until 2001 that The Ghan line was extended by 1420 kilometres to connect Alice Springs to Darwin, the guide explains as we rejoin the train to resume our trip south. That night, our first on board, we dine on such local delicacies as scallops, crocodile sausage, smoked duck and grilled barramundi, washed down by a wide choice of top, predominantly Australian wines. That night, too, we experience the deft way in which cabin seats and side tables, are replaced by drop-down beds. As all guests are warned in advance – especially in the main, gold class – space on The Ghan is at a premium. Bulky bags should be stowed elsewhere on the train. Waiters and waitresses, dressed in checkered black and white shirts, serve guests sitting at dazzling, wedding-white tables, from a menu including poached chicken and saffron shallots, followed by Thousand Guineas tenderloin and the chef’s selection of pavlova and chocolate brownies. The atmosphere is laid-back. Some guests are happy to sit around chatting to new-found friends. Some go, aptly, for a camel ride. Some inspect the old telegraph station and its fascinating museum pieces. Others dance away the night to the music of a local country singer or, best of all, enjoy the trip through the starry, starry skies by a local astronomer. It is a

Lunch is taken in the Umoona Opal Mine and Museum. It’s underground, of course, in an abandoned tunnel. All too soon, we run out of time. But a short drive away, there are two more excursion treats, before we head back to The Ghan and enjoy the 882-kilometre home stretch to Adelaide. John Huxley was a guest of Tourism NT and The Ghan.

At the cutting edge of imaging T

he exciting technology installed at Lake Imaging in July enables radiologists’ analysing scans to pinpoint the site of any abnormality with startling new levels of accuracy, says the Melton site manager, Adrian Poulton. He says the Lake Imaging team is happy to be using the latest in nuclear medicine technology, a GE Infinia Hawkeye SPECT-CT, and to be offering the community a cutting-edge diagnostic service. Mr Poulton explains both nuclear medicine and how the SPECT-CT works: “Nuclear medicine is a branch of diagnostic imaging that uses small amounts of radioactive pharmaceuticals to map the function of many organs and body systems – heart, bones, lungs, kidneys, liver, stomach and thyroid gland are common areas. “Usually injected into an arm vein, the radiopharmaceutical concentrates on the area of interest and a gamma camera moves close over the area, building an image from the radiation emitted. “A complex digital system analyses, stores and displays all images, which are then evaluated by medical imaging specialists. “The SPECT-CT is a test that combines a conventional nuclear medicine scan, which rotates 360 degrees around the patient, with a CT scan in 3D,” Mr Poulton says. “This provides highly accurate diagnostic reports. In complex bony areas, such as feet and spine, determining exactly which

bone is affected is challenging on 2D nuclear medicine scans. “Combining the SPECT and CT allows essential anatomical mapping with precise localisation in 3D.” Lake Imaging now delivers the largest range of services in the Melton region. Along with the SPECT-CT, the clinic provides MRI, CT, ultrasound, echocardiography, mammography, bone densitometry, digital dental imaging, and digital X-rays. Referrals from all imaging providers are accepted, appointments are timely, image quality is outstanding and patients are exposed to lower doses of radiation. “Why would you go anywhere else?” Mr Poulton questions.

s winter boots hit the back of the cupboard, it’s time to match our summer wardrobes with the footwear that sets it off. New styles for women have hit the shelves at iShoes of Bacchus Marsh, and there’s a fine selection on show for customers. Run locally, iShoes had its beginnings in Fitzroy 10 years ago, and has since established stores in nine locations, supplying Melbourne, Bendigo and country areas. Its focus from the start has been to provide good quality footwear at affordable prices, store manager Cherie Stanic says. “But it’s also about giving our customers a great shoe-buying experience. “We love them to take some ‘me-time’ and relax into the joy of trying on a good, well-fitted shoe,” she says. “We’re all fitting specialists here, so we can guide them into choices that are comfortable to wear and suitable for the occasion – whether work, school or play.” Some of the styles the ladies may want to slip on include a selection from Aerocushion, such as the $59.95 Maye 11 in black, pewter and beige (pictured), one of the best sellers in the Aerocushion range featuring a leather lining and sock. This makes it fun and exciting for kids, who think they’re playing games but are actually learning defensive techniques, body evasion and awareness skills. “As for adults, our senior coaches bring more than 25 years experience in Martial Arts, and are proficient in engaging each student.” Shihan David Zarb, who is head of style, with more than 48 years experience, oversees the entire syllabus for Karate and Kung-Fu, and all coaching techniques, as well as assessments. “Having Shihan David in-house and coaching each week is a wonderful experience and opportunity,” Amelia says. “It’s not common to learn from a Master in any style. And our students also regularly train with our Masters in Taiwan, who visit us here, too.” Beginners and newcomers are promised a warm welcome, and the first two sessions are free, as are uniforms, once signed up. ne of the directors of Art of Defence, Sensei Amelia Zarb, says Martial Arts are a great equaliser that can benefit everyone. “People can become involved in Martial Arts whatever their age, gender or fitness level,” explains Amelia, who teaches alongside Shihan David Zarb, the international director of Art of Defence. “We teach two styles – Goju Ryu Karate-Do, a relatively new Japanese Martial Art in that it’s been taught for only 200 years or so; and Cheng Ming Internal Kung Fu (Tai Chi), a Martial Art from China that’s thousands of years old.” Fast, exciting and challenging, Karate is ideal for young people, while Tai Chi is perfect for adults of any age, state of health or disposition. Amelia says both styles provide huge benefits in physical and mental wellbeing, fitness levels, body conditioning, self-defence skills and overall confidence and self-esteem. These styles are also effective for toning nerves; learning to deal with outcomes outside your comfort zone; overcoming stress, anxiety and depression; and learning to deal with pain, grief and chronic ailments, such as arthritis. Art of Defence uses modern coaching skills, and Amelia says all students are encouraged to be the best they can be. “Students learn at different rates and in differing ways. Care that gets you fit for parenthood D

iscovering you’re pregnant is an exciting and sometimes daunting revelation. There are lots of questions and plenty of unsolicited advice – not all of it helpful. To get your pregnancy off to a good start, Djerriwarrh Health Services director of nursing Amanda Edwards offers these five useful tips:

2. You are living for two, but it’s not necessary to eat for both of you Minimise the consumption of processed foods, such as takeaway or pre-made meals. Instead, eat fresh fruit, vegetables, protein, and foods with high iron levels to help avoid anaemia. Djerriwarrh Health Services dietician Renee Del Gross recommends women should ensure they get enough folic acid, and aim to gain only 12 kilograms during their pregnancies. 3. There are some foods and toxins you should avoid during pregnancy • Consume moderate levels of caffeine (including soft and energy drinks). • Avoid cigarette smoke – exposure to one cigarette inhibits your capacity, and baby’s, to process oxygen for up to 90 minutes.

(Supplied)

1. Choose a doctor or midwife to care for you during your pregnancy It’s recommended you have your first pregnancy care visit at about 12 weeks. Consulting with your GP as soon as possible will help you choose and book a hospital that best suits your needs.

• Avoid alcohol – it can lead to the development of foetal alcohol syndrome (intellectual disability) – it is advisable to abstain completely during pregnancy. • Some medications, even those available over the counter, should be avoided. Consult your pharmacist or doctor before taking any medication. • Avoid all illicit drugs. • Avoid certain foods, such as undercooked eggs, rare meat, sushi (raw fish), seafood and soft cheeses, as they potentially

harbour the bacteria listeria, which causes toxoplasmosis. 4. Keep fit Labour is called labour for a reason – maintaining fitness will help during the birthing process. 5. Sleep Develop regular sleeping patterns in order to ensure seven or eight hours’ sleep a night.

For more detailed information about pregnancy care, call the maternity care team at Bacchus Marsh & Melton Regional Hospital on 5367 9615. Tours of the new and improved maternity services unit at Bacchus Marsh & Melton Regional Hospital will take place between 10am and noon on the fourth Saturday of every month, or call to make a private appointment.

Perfect time to shape up for summer R

ight now, Anytime Fitness at Melton is making that decision to get into shape for summer so much easier. Manager of the boutique, members-only club, Terence Kuipers, says this is a great time to start a health and fitness campaign. “Until the end of November, we’re offering two months’ free membership, and an initial consultation with one of our personal trainers,” Terence says. “This equates to a great saving of more than $250. Members also get a discount card, which allows them to tap into discounted products and services within the Melton area.” Terence’s wife, Robin, is head personal trainer and a great asset to Anytime Fitness, if he does say so himself. “Not only does Robin engage with our members, offering advice and help, but she also runs group classes, which participants describe as amazing,” Terence says. “She’s great at getting people involved in challenges and competitions, which breaks up repetition and keeps things interesting – as well as helping achieving client goals.” Metafit is a recent introduction to group sessions and the high intensity interval training (HIIT) program has been proving very popular. Designed to boost fitness, rocket energy levels and get dramatic results in the shortest time possible, the impacts are being noticed. “It gets results,” Robin says. “Because it creates a metabolic disturbance, this increases the resting metabolic rate and the fat burning.”

Terence spends lots of time on the floor talking to members, helping out with techniques and having a chat. He says they’ve seen a big cultural shift in the almost 12 months since they opened. “Women now feel comfortable and included – any ‘blokey’ atmosphere is now a thing of the past,” he says. “A difference in interaction style has had a genuine impact.” Members still enjoy 24-hour gym access and, with a state-of-the-art, 24/7 monitored security system (with voice-over emergency buttons), any hankering for a workout can be satisfied literally at any time without having to worry about personal safety. Anytime Fitness, Melton Gateway, 72-84 High Street, Melton. Open 10.30am-7pm Monday-Thursday; 11am-3pm Friday; 10am-2pm Saturday. Open to members 24/7. All hands on deck for road blitz V

ictoria Police will be out in force over Melbourne Cup weekend, with Operation Furlong running from Friday, October 28, until Tuesday, November 1. Road policing advisor Senior Sergeant Ross Burbidge said Operation Furlong would be conducted throughout Victoria in all police areas over the five days, using all available personnel from local highway patrol units, general duties police and other units. The major focus for the operation will be speed, fatigue, impaired driving (drug and alcohol), mobile phone offences and seatbelt compliance. Motorists will be aware of police units in marked and unmarked vehicles targeting major arterial roads during this holiday weekend. Traffic camera vehicles will also be rostered on roads known for high collision rates. The aim, in addition to detecting offences, is to provide a highly visible and mobile police presence to reinforce positive driving behaviour and reduce accidents. “It has been demonstrated time after time,” Senior Sergeant Burbidge says, “that speed is a contributing factor in most road crashes … stay within the speed limit and drive to suit the conditions.” Speeding affects both the risk of a crash and the severity of injuries sustained when a crash does happen. RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council chairman Jim Giddings says road trauma isn’t just about the people who die.

Police will be out in force for the Melbourne Cup long weekend Sergeant Marty Wallace and Leading Senior Constable Ray Schembri from Westgate Highway Patrol.

“It’s about the enormous impact on the community, from the family members and emergency services workers, who have to deal with these tragedies on a daily basis, to the police who have to deliver the devastating news to loved ones,” Mr Giddings says. Drivers are being urged to plan their trips, be patient and ensure they have frequent breaks when driving long distances.

Mr Giddings said holiday driving presents special challenges so motorists should drive in the hours they are normally awake, take regular breaks to reduce fatigue and allow extra space between vehicles. They need to adapt to the conditions of the road – the onus is always on drivers to suit the conditions they are facing, including road quality. “If you plan to have a drink, then plan

not to drive,” he says. “Taking a big risk like drinking and driving is just not worth endangering your or other road users’ lives. “And before embarking on any driving trips, drivers should check their tyres, windscreen washers, brakes and lights. “Be prepared and stay safe.” Report speeding drivers to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A great Scot moment in time I

f there’s a fact every Scot knows, it’s who won the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. The Battle of Bannockburn was a significant Scottish victory in the First War of Scottish Independence and a landmark in the nation’s history. The royal fortress, Stirling Castle, occupied by the English, was under siege by the Scottish army. England’s King Edward II assembled his forces to defend the castle but was defeated, the fortress yielding to the “King of Scots”, Robert the Bruce. This year the Scots will cry, “On them! On them! They fail!” – the Scots’ cry as the English were driven back – when the Bannockburn Lions Club and Bannockburn Golf Club join forces with Timeline Festival to present a Scottish spectacular event on October 29 and 30. Lions club manager John McNamara says the annual event represents one of the most celebrated conflicts in Scottish history. “The Battle of Bannockburn was a pivotal moment in Scotland’s history,” he says. “The battle lasted two days and there was some fierce fighting. The result saw King Edward’s English army thwarted by Scottish King Robert Bruce. It was an unprecedented battle as they were outnumbered by three-to-one.” Spurring their warhorses to the charge, The Battle of Bannockburn Timeline Festival is a weekend not to be missed with crowds set to reach 10,000. “It’s going to be huge,” John says.

The Battle of Bannockburn will be brought to life later this month. (Supplied)

“There’ll be up to 500 re-enactors on show over the weekend. We’ll have two stages set up which will have non-stop action, with actors, dressed in their period outfits, representing scenes and people from the medieval and Viking periods. “There’ll also be a site for more current military, which will be using cannons,

bazookas, tanks and pyrotechnics.” Festival attendees will be able to browse more than 100 market and food stalls and have the opportunity to trace their Scottish heritage in one of the Scottish clan tents. An array of entertainment will ensure everyone keeps in the Celtic spirit. “We have four Celtic bands performing

over the weekend – the Fiona Ross Band, Trioc, Bhan Tre and the Eddie Lewis band. We also have the Geelong RSL pipe band and Geelong Highland Pipe Band lined up to perform,” John says. “This year we’re having a massive trebuchet (medieval catapult) catapulting watermelons and world champion jousters from Kryal Castle are set to put on a great show.” Children will love this year’s activity schedule, which will include jumping castles, animal farms and live shows. “There’ll be prizes awarded for the highland dancing competition and the lucky person who wins the haggis throwing competition gets to actually keep the haggis,” John says. Established in 2007, the event was created by Lions club members to bring Scottish history to life. “I am one of the originals,” John says. “We created the event to represent the battle in our own unique way.” Tickets will be available from the venue on the day and pricing can be found on the website. The 2016 Battle of Bannockburn Timeline Festival will be held on October 29 and 30 from 9am-5pm at Bannockburn Golf Club, Shelford-Bannockburn Road, Bannockburn. or Auto Passion owner Vincent Bartolo, the safety of his customers is paramount. That’s what comes first at this Bacchus Marsh car workshop. “I had two young mums come in after buying a coffee van business,” he says. “They wanted to paint their van a brighter, more eye-catching colour. “I began dismantling the van in preparation for painting, but then I discovered that most of the wooden frame work was water damaged. This is really dangerous as the van needed electricity. “I wasn’t letting these girls take the van with the possibility of it being a danger to themselves or anyone else.” Vincent has been working on cars since he was 15, so it’s no surprise those customers felt confident leaving the key to their business venture in his hands. “Instead of it being a quick spray job, it escalated to a full rebuild,” he says. “It needed a new metal frame, roof and side panels and doors. I also designed it so water would run off it, not in it.” The owners were delighted with their new yellow van and have since been trading at the Bacchus Marsh train station. “The girls’ van, “Coffee in A Shot”, serves great coffee every morning. I’m so happy to have helped.” Understanding that different clients have different needs, Vincent and his team offer classic and prestige restoration work, smash and bumper repairs, insurance work, steel and fibreglass installation and custom painting. “People love their cars and rely on them,”

Training is a confidence kick P

eople in the world of pro kickboxing will already know the name, “Machine Gun” Charlie. He has huge cred in the combat sport, winning about 50 professional fights in 15 years. Charlie earned the nickname for his lightning-fast kicks – like the burst of a machine gun – early on in his kickboxing career. And now he’s paying tribute to that by naming his spanking new Melton gym, MGC Fighting & Fitness Academy. He plans to teach kickboxing, as both combat sport at a high level and for fitness, with the same passion he’s maintained during 33 years in the martial arts field. “Machine Gun” says he hopes to produce some strong kickboxing fighters, but also has a strong interest in teaching kids, young people and women the art of self-defence in a confidence-building way. Bullied as a child, Charlie found he also had to defend himself in situations later in life. “I am passionate about teaching people how to defend themselves if a situation ever arose,” he says. “I sometimes had to fight to survive, but if we can give kids or anyone the confidence, the discipline and a few techniques to fend off bullies, it’s often all they need to stand tall.” Sharing the new gym is Lisa Azzopardi, who’s earned her stripes as owner of LA Diamond Fitness in Mooroolbark for the past 14 years. Raised in Melton, Lisa returns with a wealth of experience in the fitness field, incorporating kickboxing into her clients’ personal training routine. She has a

particular interest in body transformation, weight loss and women-only groups. “I don’t get into the combat sport side of kickboxing,” Lisa explains. “Charlie is the guru in that area – and he’s super-good at it.” She says her self-defence classes for women are a fantastic workout. “This is the kind of class that women love. They’re learning techniques that will make them feel more empowered and they’re having fun too, getting fit and changing the shape of their bodies as they go.” An Open Day on October 29, starting at 11am will include kickboxing exhibition matches. Step up and step lively The good news is, it’s never too late to start on the road to a healthier you. And with the sun out longer, you can use this as motivation to update your fitness regimes and get beach-ready. Here are some tips to help you spring into shape. 1. Rain, hail or shine, don’t sacrifice your training regime. Maintaining good training habits can ensure you stay in shape. If an early morning run is not your thing, signing up to a gym to train can ensure you never miss a work-out session.

2. Reduce your amount of sitting. Doctors recommend you shouldn’t sit for more than three hours per day, so preventing long times seated can ensure you burn a few extra calories. 3. Give it time. Everybody wants fast results, but remember you won’t see results overnight. Depending on where you start, it could take a few weeks; just remember not to let a lack of immediate results discourage you from continuing. Dedication will eventually see changes and when you do, your confidence and motivation will boost you to new levels. Eleanor Tabone

Fire Action Week 23 to 30 October 2016 Financial Information Service - free seminars

Message from the Premier

UNDERSTANDING PROPERTY INVESTMENTS Taylors Lakes Hotel Starlight Convention Centre 7 Melton Highway Taylors Lakes 3038 Tuesday 8th November 2016 6.00PM to 9.00PM

This summer is forecast to be a dangerous fire season. Fire Action Week is the time for all Victorians to get ready for the heat ahead.

UNDERSTANDING RETIREMENT INCOME STREAMS Taylors Lakes Hotel Starlight Convention Centre 7 Melton Highway Taylors Lakes 3038

Many Victorians have been battling persistent rain and rising flood waters. This rainfall has increased growth of vegetation in forested, bush and grassfire areas across the state. As summer intensifies, these regions will dry out quickly, increasing the risk of uncontrollable fires, especially over Christmas and summer holidays.

Tuesday 15th November 2016 6.00PM to 9.00PM

AGE PENSION CHOICES Taylors Lakes Hotel Starlight Convention Centre 7 Melton Highway Taylors Lakes 3038 Tuesday 22nd November 2016 6.00PM to 9.00PM

Emergency services are working with communities, businesses, councils and government to reduce risks in your area, while ensuring resources are in place to respond to all emergencies. However, it is up to you to understand the risks in your area, monitor conditions and take responsibility for your own safety and the safety of your household.

AGED CARE FEES & CHARGES Taylors Lakes Hotel Starlight Convention Centre 7 Melton Highway Taylors Lakes 3038 Tuesday 29th November 2016 6.00PM to 9.00PM

Bookings are Essential. Please call 136357 to reserve your place or visit the website humanservices.gov.au or email fis.seminar.bookings@humanservices.gov.au.

Light Refreshments provided.

Be prepared before summer so you know what to do when a fire starts.

Talk to your family and friends about how you’ll know when to leave, and where to go to stay safe. Leaving early means leaving before a fire starts – not when you can see flames or smell smoke. Leaving early means avoiding panic, and not making wrong decisions that could be dire. Use Fire Action Week to prepare your home and property, especially if you live in bush and grassfire prone areas. If you take the right steps now, your decisions in an emergency will be easier and clearer. • Talk to your household and neighbours about what you’ll do on high risk days, and have a plan if fire threatens you and your home this summer • Check fire danger ratings daily at emergency.vic.gov.au to find out how dangerous a fire would be if one started, and monitor warnings, especially when the fire danger rating is severe, extreme or code red • Pack an emergency kit of essentials

The Hon Daniel Andrews MP Premier of Victoria

humanservices.gov.au

Be Fire Ready. THE REASONS ARE BLACK AND WHITE.

Fire Action Week The Right Time To Prepare

1. Plan what you’ll do in the event of a fire, talk to your household and know where to access information on high risk days. 2. Keep grass short. Fire can ignite and travel quickly through long grass. 3. Get rid of dry grass, leaves, twigs and loose bark around your home. 4. Remove or prune shrubs near windows and well away from branches of mature trees. 5. Cut back overhanging tree branches close to property – no branches within 10 metres. 6. Keep gutters and roof areas clear of leaf litter (if you are physically able to). 7. Remove all materials from around the home that could burn, such as boxes, furniture and woodpiles.

This spacious double storey on about 750 square metres has heaps going on for a family. It’s the kind of place where a morning walk around the corner to the Arnolds Creek trail is in the offing. And that same trail has the kids in a fab playground at Arthur Westlake Recreation Reserve within 10 minutes, the same time it takes for a walk to Catholic Regional College (two by car). The house has generosity of space, particularly embodied in the open-plan layout, and underscored by a white/

off-white/soft-grey colour palette, with streamlined roller blinds dressing most windows. From the wide entry hall, to the open study on the left, through to a carpeted lounge room and family-meals hub beyond, all is open-plan, light and airy. But wisely taking into account the real-world needs of a family, there’s a theatre room behind double doors for when retreat is called for. And, upstairs, a large carpeted living room is yet another spread-out option. The kitchen packs a colour punch, with

a mix of aubergine and white cabinetry and mustard glass splashback; it has a stone waterfall bench under designer pendants, and the full suite of appliances. The laundry has a walk-in closet and a powder room is next door. Three of the upstairs bedrooms have wardrobes and share a smart bathroom and separate toilet. The large main is a lovely room, in soft greys with white accents, and off-white roman blinds on black-framed windows. It has the twin luxuries of french doors to a private balcony and two walk-in

wardrobes – one leading to an en suite with dual basins. The family-meals space opens to an integrated outdoor deck with boards extending out to meet expansive grey paving rimmed with dense plantings. Ducted heating and cooling and an alarm are indoor features, and outdoors rounds up a shed with power connection, a carport and a double garage with internal access and back roller door. SPORT Bacchus Marsh conquers weather, thumps Trentham Bacchus Marsh handled the tricky weather conditions to a tee on Saturday to record a convincing win against Trentham in Central Highlands Bowls division 1. In rain and wind that made it difficult for everyone involved, Craig Norris, Leonard Kean and Justin Webster won their rinks for Bacchus Marsh in a 112 (16)-82 (2) victory. The rink of Phil Minniti lost 24-22 after leading by 10 shots. Bacchus Marsh’s Tyler Maher said the weather couldn’t make up its mind on Saturday. “Ten minutes it was sun and then the next 10 minutes it was raining,” he said. “We looked pretty comfortable all day and there wasn’t much heat in the game.”

The win was an important one for Bacchus Marsh as it helps close the gap on top two teams Lancefield and Gisborne. The match scheduled for those two sides was washed out. Both teams were awarded nine points. Lancefield remains on top of the ladder, four points clear of Gisborne, with Bacchus Marsh two points back. Maher said the win was extremely helpful in Bacchus Marsh’s bid to finish in the top four. “We definitely want to play finals and to win the premiership you would prefer to finish in the top two,” he said. “If you make finals, you never know what will happen.”

Maher said the club had retained the basis of the senior side from last season, but was down on numbers across the board. The third division side had to forfeit in round 2, but Maher said it would have fielded a full team in round 3 had the fixture not been washed out. “We had 15 to 16 players unavailable,” he said of round 2. “We’ve got about 55 to 60 players this season, while last year had closer to 80. “The Avenue has been helping us out with extra players.” Reigning premier Kyneton Golf finally got its first win for the season, regaining the form that earned it the past two flags.

Bulls beat the odds By Tara Murray Victoria’s wet weather meant very few cricket sides took to the pitch on Saturday, but somehow Bacchus Marsh got not one but three teams on the park in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association. And they made the best of it, the Bulls winning two games while the third was drawn. Bulls coach Steve Charles said the rain somehow managed to avoid the grounds where the Bulls were playing. No other matches went ahead in the McIntyre Cup and B-grade competitions. Charles said it was a team performance that ensured a first win for the season, against Rupertswood, in the top grade. “We think we weren’t that far away in the first two games and there were lots of positives out of them,” he said. “This week we played a more complete game, batting and bowling well. There’s a lot to like about the season so far even though we’ve been disappointed with results.” On Saturday, the Bulls batted first. Partnerships at key times pushed their tally to 8-194, with Alex Porter top-scoring with 71. “The opening partnership put on 50 and Alex, who’s only 18, made his first score over 50 in the firsts. “We had a few cameos late in the innings to push the score up. We were happy with it and thought it would be a tough chase.” Rupertswood started slowly, losing a wicket in the opening over, and struggled to gain momentum on the way to 150, with only skipper Mark Ryan showing much resistance. “We bowled really tight for the first 15 overs and it put them behind the eight-ball,” Charles said. Cameron McKinley was the best of the bowlers, taking four wickets. The result moves the Bulls to six points, equal with Rupertswood. Charles, in his first season as coach, said he was enjoying the role. “It’s a fantastic club and everyone has bought into the way I go about things. The support has been really good; I couldn’t be happier.” In B-grade, the Bulls’ match with Ashfield ended in controversy. The two teams left the field with Ashfield believing it had won the match. It was later found the scorebooks didn’t match the scoreboard, with the books having different totals. The captains agreed to call it a draw, but Ashfield has since asked the association to investigate. In F-grade, the Bulls defeated Woodend, which was bowled out for 118. The Bulls replied with 3-154. For more on the B-grade match, go to starweekly.com.au 62 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 25, 2016

Romsey was the unlucky side to face Golf, with the latter winning all four rinks in a massive 125 (18)-78 (0) win. Adrian Plowman’s rink won 42-19. Kyneton’s win against Woodend was nearly as emphatic. On the back of Craig Vincent’s rink, which won 44-6, Kyneton won 115 (16)-69 (2). While three of the four division 1 matches went ahead, all matches in divisions 2 and division 3 were washed out. Meanwhile, Lancefield’s Bev Holmes and Michael Linehan have become the competition’s over-60 singles champions. Tara Murray

Caroline Springs on new turf in VTCA Caroline Springs is looking forward to the challenge of what this Victorian Turf Cricket Association season will bring. As one of several clubs to move across from the Williamstown District Cricket Association, Caroline Springs will have to learn as it goes in the north A1 division. All the other clubs that moved across from the WDCA played in west A1, so are an unknown quantity. Captain-coach Kane Sevior said he wouldn’t have it any other way. “Initially, we were going to be in the same competition,” Sevior said. “I wasn’t happy about that, as we’d be playing against the same teams we’ve played against the last couple of years. “This way, it’s more exciting. “We don’t know what to expect, and it’s a different challenge.” Sevior said the move to VTCA was one the club needed to make for its long term future. “The competition is a little more professional and a higher standard. “We have 17 teams at the club. We used to be a small social club but have grown too big for the one competition. We are the biggest club on the western side of the city,” Sevior said. As well as a new competition, the club has a new turf wicket. This means they can play at their home ground, which hasn’t happened since the 2013-14 season. “It is awesome,” Sevior said. “Every home game had been at Werribee, and you were up there three to four times a week to get the ground ready.” Sevior said it was a little unknown how competitive they will be this season. “We’ve got eight players 21 and under in our first 11 on the weekend. As long as we grow and make the right steps … we’ll be happy. We’ll be pushing for finals and, hopefully, the success that may follow.” Caroline Springs’ match against Moonee Valley ended in a draw after wet weather prevented them from taking to the field on day two on Saturday. On day one, Moonee Valley made 140, after cruising at 3-140. Liam White took four wickets. Caroline Springs was in trouble at 5-29. All West A1 games were drawn due to rain. Caroline Springs now hosts Roxburgh Park Falcons in a two-day match starting Saturday.

Alex Porter made an important 71 in Bacchus Marsh’s McIntyre Cup win. (Shawn Smits)

New coach back to grassroots By Tara Murray New Rockbank coach Shane Rayment is keen to continue the progress made over the past 12 months at the Riddell District Football League club. The Rams announced Rayment’s appointment as senior coach last week. He will replace Gavin Sporle, who stepped down to continue as the club’s football manager. Having last coached in 2014, Rayment said he’s excited to get back into gear. “I live in Melton, so I live in the local area,” he said. “A young fellow I used to coach is playing there, and he contacted me and asked if I would go down that path. “The club went through the process and I have ended up being appointed.” Rayment has an extensive coaching resume across several competitions in both seniors and

under-18s. In his last role, he coached Essendon District Football League club Burnside Heights in its inaugural season. “I had work commitments, which took me away from coaching,” he said. “I have sorted out a few things and want to coach again. “I’m basically a Rockbank local. Everyone is excited and up about it.” He knows that he doesn’t have an easy job ahead, though. The Rams didn’t win a game in 2016, clocking up an average losing margin of more than 100 points. “We’re starting at the bottom of the tree, and need to do things the right way,” Rayment said. “It’s not a quick fix and things will not happen in 12 months. We need to make some inroads, but that’s not gauged by making finals. “I want to improve and want to get better and be more competitive, and keep building on what we started last year.

“We’ll worry about our own goals, and as long as we tick them off week to week and have some enjoyment, we’ll be happy.” Rayment, who met many of the players on Saturday night, said the attitude of the club and playing group had been one of the big factors attracting him to the role. He said they would recruit some players into the club, but will continue the focus of the past 12 months. As far as he was aware, they have managed to keep most of this year’s playing group. “Gav has done a great job,” he said. “We certainly need to recruit some players, but not do anything stupid. “We’ll get some older guys in and make sure we keep the list intact. Gav was good at getting under-18s game time, and this is how I work. “I want to keep developing the team, and maybe we’ll get some young guys.”

Westside netballers shoot for the stars The St Albans Caroline Springs Netball Association continues to go from strength to strength. The association, which started in 1976, has competitions running seven days a week across three locations. With Copperfield Secondary College in Sydenham and Caroline Springs Leisure Centre near capacity, the association this season started playing at Keilor Basketball and Netball Stadium. Association committee member Leanne Cini said each year more teams were wanting to join. “We’ve got ladies competitions, juniors … through to open, and mixed competitions,” she said “It’s our first year playing at the new Keilor Basketball/Netball Stadium. The new and improved facilities boast an environment of enthusiastic talented players coming together in the one venue from juniors to senior level.” On court, the association’s representative sides – known as the Westside Saints – have been mixing it with the best teams in the state. Players from the association try out for the representative teams, with teams ranging from under-11s through to seniors playing at Parkville. The teams have won several Parkville premierships across all age groups. Two under-13 and two under-15 teams represented the association at the state association championships in June. Teams from across 106 associations took part in the event, with all four Saints teams making it to the finals. One of the under-15s teams went through undefeated to the title, the first in the club’s history. “It’s huge for the west … years ago we could have only ever dreamed of getting a team together with this calibre of girls,” Cini said. Former club members Morgan Mitchell and Maria Masei have represented Australia at junior level, while several players are members of local academies and involved with City West Falcons. Cini said further expansion of the association was possible. “Something is on the cards at Caroline Springs for an expansion of the stadium, while we’re looking at expanding to play more nights at Keilor,” she said. “We’d like to run an all-abilities competition and look at the need for a boys competition. “The Net Set Go program is running out of Sunshine CYW … we would like to get set up at Keilor. Shane Rayment (right) has been appointed the new seniors coach, while Simon Lake will coach the reserves. (Shawn Smits)

Sports shorts Netball

Randy Pereira has been reappointed Melton Centrals A-grade coach for next year’s Riddell District Netball League season. Pereira, who this season coached the As, Bs and Cs, will remain coach of the As and Cs while Mardi Button will coach the B-grade and under-19 teams. Pereira has coached the A-grade team since 2009. Centrals were knocked out in the first week of finals this year.

BFL

Melton South has announced the signings of Adam and Munir El Houli and Ben Peters for the next Ballarat Football League season. Adam is a key defender who played in Aberfeldie’s 2015 premiership before playing at Deer Park this year. Munir was best-on-ground in Newport Power’s division 3 Western Region Football League premiership. Peters, a former captain of the club, last played for the Panthers in 2014. The signings follow those of Mark Lynch and Shannon Broadbent.

WRFL

Caroline Springs will be part of a 10-team Western Region Football League division 1. The league announced last week that no teams would be relegated for 2017 as it restructured the competition. Division 1 will have 10 teams with Caroline Springs joining the nine existing sides. Division 2 will remain a seven-team division with division 3 premier Newport Power being promoted. Division 3 will be an eight-team competition. The league has also announced its players points cap and salary caps. All teams will have a points cap of 45 points. The salary caps will be $225,000 for division 1, $100,000 for division 2 and $50,000 for division 3.

Swimming

Some of Melton Swimming Club’s youngest swimmers took to the pool at the MetroWest selection trials at Broadmeadows. The club had 23 swimmers compete, with all but one making it through to the top 10 of their age groups and through to the finals. Among the swimmers, 19 were also quick enough to qualify for the Victorian Long Course Sprint Championships. C O N S E N S US \ A GREAT COMPACT SUV FOR CITY SLICKERS MORE \ mazda.com.au

S H E R Y L’ S V E R D I C T I liked this car very much, but I hated the navigation reminder that made me feel like a poor relation.

12328042-MB42-16 10045858-01

For city dwellers this is the best medium SUV on the market, but be wary taking it off-road.

he CX5 grew on me. It’s easy to drive and the elevated driving position gives good visibility all around. The generous dimensions return plenty of room front and rear, and good cargo space. The reversing camera makes parking less of a handful. I liked the seating, the clarity of the instruments and having solid power that’s always available. This one was fitted with Mazda’s optional safety package, which includes blind spot and cross traffic monitors and a warning system when braking is needed. It adds about $1230. It should be included as standard. The thing I disliked intensely is that, despite a navigation option on the menu and among the buttons on the console, navigation is optional. Press the Nav button and you get your latitude and longitude and a message saying a dealer can fit navigation for you. Hand over $578 and he’ll slip in the chip. If you refuse the optional navigation, the car will remind you of this for as long as you own it.

azda’s CX5 dominated the medium SUV market last year, with 25,136 sales. That’s because it’s a really good thing. It’s also well-specified, well-priced and offers a comprehensive range of two and four-wheel-drive models, petrol and diesel; from $31k up to $55k. The Maxx is the entry-level model and 4WD adds about three grand but it’s a very basic 4WD system – to the point where Mazda calls it all-wheel-drive. It’s for the better bush tracks only. But all-wheel-drive gives a safety edge in the wet and on unsealed roads. For the city, this is a great package. The motor is willing and energetic, the six-speed auto is beautifully smooth and the fuel economy is okay for an AWD. It’s a comfortable cruiser in the country, although the ride can get a little sharp over rough surfaces. There’s little sign of top-heaviness and it hangs on to corners with security and dexterity.
