Roundabout delayed

Festival unites town It was a day of festival fun and fireworks – the annual Djerriwarrh Festival was a big hit in Melton town once again. And this year, the famous and much-loved bonfire was back. While there weren’t any opportunities to toast marshmallows, there were plenty of nostalgic flashbacks for some people.

The deadline to remove a Delahey roundabout described as “the most dangerous and hazardous in the state” has been dragged out by at least six months.

Star Weekly revealed in May the Taylors and Kings roads roundabout works were set for the second half of this year, to be completed by May next year.

However, works were pushed back when Roads and Road Safety Minister Luke Donnellan announced the $7.5 million program would not begin until March next year, with the end of 2017 for completion.

As well as removing the roundabout, traffic signals, pedestrian crossings and a dedicated bicycle lane are also key parts of the project.

St Albans MP Natalie Suleyman said in May most works were scheduled for the Christmas-New Year period to cut disruptions, but could be completed earlier.

But she hinted at a possible deadline extension in Parliament late last month.

“We have seen fatalities and near misses … this is the most dangerous and hazardous roundabout in the state,” she told Parliament. “As the west continues to grow, this intersection will only get worse.

These works are extremely vital.”

A VicRoads spokesman said works had been delayed due to “complex service [utilities]relocation at the site”.

The roundabout is a central distributor for suburbs including Delahey, Sydenham, Taylors Lakes, Deer Park, Kings Park, Taylors Hill and Caroline Springs, and was voted as Melbourne’s seventh-worst intersection in the RACV’s 2014 Redspot survey.

The survey found road rage and near misses in morning and afternoon peaks were common “as drivers try to find gaps to enter this roundabout”.

Brimbank council believes “safety at the Kings-Taylors roads intersection is highly compromised”, and “hazardous for pedestrians”.

Infrastructure and environment director Neil Whiteside said the roundabout needed “urgent attention”.

Mr Donnellan last week said the state government “hasn’t wasted a minute in getting on with fixing this notorious intersection”.

“We know how important this project is.”

Comrie appeal sets votes right

By Sumeyya Ilanbey More than 400 Moorabool council election votes, incorrectly marked as late returns, were recounted and sorted last week after the shock ousting of veteran councillor Allan Comrie.

The Victorian Electoral Commission included 446 additional ballot papers – 419 formal and 27 informal – into the East Moorabool ward votes last Wednesday after Mr Comrie, 75, raised concerns about the sorting of ballots.

VEC returning officer Ed Ferguson subsequently identified a number of ballot

paper envelopes that were incorrectly counted as late returns.

A recalculation of the votes was held at 1pm last Wednesday. VEC spokesman Lawson Fletcher said the recount did not change the poll result.

Tonia Dudzik, David Edwards, and newcomers Jarrod Bingham and John Keogh will represent East Moorabool ward.

“The fact that these ballots were identified as part of reconciliation activity underpins the fact that the VEC has robust processes in place to ensure every admissible vote is included in the count for an election,” Mr Fletcher said.

“Checks and balances, such as post-calculation reconciliations, provide certainty in the election result.”

Mr Comrie, who had been on the council for 30 years, said while he was disappointed with the results, it was time to move on and give younger people a shot.

“I accept the results – this is it for me. I’m finished with council, and I have no intentions to stand again,” he said. “I have no regrets.

“I’ve done my bit and I’ve failed at the last hurdle. I’ll find plenty of activities to keep me busy – do some volunteer work around town or go on a holiday with my family.”

Mr Comrie said he raised concerns with the VEC about the sorting of ballot papers amid concerns voters who had done the right thing could potentially be fined for postal delays.

He said he wasn’t expecting the outcome to change, but was worried about people being fined.

“What people don’t realise is when they post their mail … it’s picked up by a truck and goes to Dandenong,” Mr Comrie said. “Even though voters mailed out their ballot papers before the closing … it was picked up in Dandenong … past the due date.”

The new council was sworn in last Friday.

Cash helps schools reach higher standard Four Melton schools will share in $1.1 million to refurbish old buildings and upgrade school grounds.

Kurunjang Primary School, Melton South Primary School, Wedge Park Primary School and Staughton College have received the funding as part of the state government’s Planned Maintenance Program.

The money will be used to maintain school buildings and grounds, refurbish classrooms, pave pathways and fix fences or drains.

The Planned Maintenance Program is aimed at ensuring school buildings that fall below minimum standards can be refurbished, demolished or replaced.

An education department spokesman said: “Planned Maintenance Funding is used to raise school buildings to a good standard to create effective learning environments for students.”

“There is no concern these buildings are unsafe – if at any time a school building becomes unsafe or at risk of becoming unsafe then the issue is addressed immediately.”

More than 500 Victorian schools will share in $52.4 million in school maintenance funding this year.

Education Minister James Merlino said: “This funding boost will allow hundreds more Victorian schools to replace or upgrade buildings in poor condition so that our teachers and students have the first-rate facilities they deserve.”

Sacrifice of others remembered Kevin Murray will spend his Friday commemorating the dead and celebrating the living.

He’s inviting Melton and Moorabool families to do the same when Melton RSL hosts its Remembrance Day ceremony on November 11.

Mr Murray, the Melton RSL secretary, says the day is an opportunity for people to reflect

on lives lost during wars, but also to remember veterans who suffered long after coming home.

“There were veterans who returned from the war, but had been quite damaged from their experiences,” Mr Murray says.

“For me, Remembrance Day is about reflection – it’s more personal and inward focused.

“It’s about reflecting on those who’ve gone before us.”

A memorial service at the cenotaph on High Street, Melton will start at 10.30am. A minute’s silence will mark its conclusion at 11am. There will be a morning tea at Melton Country Club.

Riot inmate set to do more time

By Sumeyya Ilanbey The first inmate to plead guilty over the state’s largest prison riot has had two years added to his existing jail term.

The County Court last month heard damage valued at $12 million was caused to the Metropolitan Remand Centre at Ravenhall when about 200 prisoners protested the introduction of a ban on smoking.

During the riot, which lasted more than 15 hours, inmates brandished poles, lit fires and damaged equipment and fixtures in the centre.

Johnathon Luca, 22, was the first person to plead guilty over the riot, and was last month sentenced to two years and five months for his involvement in what was called “anarchy”.

Luca was being held in remand at the MRC for several offences, including recklessly causing injury and criminal damages, when he joined in the violent protests on June 30, 2015.

The court heard Luca took part in the riot between 12.09pm and 2.46pm. He covered his face by wearing a black coloured t-shirt over his head. He then helped two other prisoners cover their faces, and was part of the

first contingent of inmates to enter the central movement control building, where he smashed glass security windows.

Luca was involved in looting the canteen, arming himself with a pole to smash several windows in a prison unit, and driving an electric tug vehicle along fence lines.

About two weeks after the incident, Luca penned a letter to his partner while in lockdown saying the “whole joint is smashed to bits”.

Judge Peter Kidd said while he accepted Luca was not a riot ringleader and was not directly involved in all the damage that

occurred, he quickly joined as the riot gained momentum.

“Your wholehearted embrace of the riot is evidenced by your placement of the disguise over your face,” Judge Kidd said.

“In my view, this was an attempt to achieve anonymity and represented a clear intention by you to behave in a riotous behaviour.”

Luca would have been eligible for parole in April next year, but will now spend at least one more year behind bars.

About 100 inmates have been charged over the riots last year.

Main Street will be closed to traffic and turned into an entertainment hub with live music, and the much-loved Saturday night fireworks will this year be at Main Street instead of Maddingley Park.

Parking woes have also been resolved, with Westside Meats offering land for a 1000-space carpark.

Event organisers, the Bacchus Marsh Tourism Association, have arranged for public seating and toilets along the Avenue of Honour and Main Street. Association secretary Glenda Jones has invited everyone to come along, taste

the fruits and see what the town has to offer.

“We wanted to make it a whole-town event instead of just an Avenue of Honour event,” Ms Jones said.

“We’ll funnel the visitors into town and then they can go down to the Bacchus Marsh CBD to eat, relax and see how gorgeous Bacchus Marsh is.”

The festival will run from October 18-20.

Aolani also finished fifth in the individual 100 metres to cap off a great meet.

The school’s relay team was created using the four fastest 11-year-olds at its recent school carnival.

College sport co-ordinator Dale Thompson

said Aolani’s talent demanded she “mix it with the boys” at the state carnival.

“Aolani was the second fastest [at the school carnival],” he said. “They [the relay team] broke a record at the western regional [event] and qualified fastest for the final at state.”

Coach Ian Guyett said it was a “David and Goliath-like” victory.

“It’s like the Dogs winning the grand final,” he said. “We broke the back of all the private schools. We took a soccer player, a basketballer, a girl and an ahtlete and they won.

“It was the baton changes which won it for them … it helped them learn about trust.”

Call to invest in affordable homes

By Sumeyya Ilanbey Single working women are being locked out Melton’s rental market, a new analysis reveals.

Research by the Council to Homeless Persons (CHP) reveals a single woman on an average wage of $882 cannot afford a one-bedroom flat in Melton without being in rental stress.

There are also fewer affordable houses for single women earning the average wage, compared to 2007.

About a decade ago, there were 52 suburbs across metropolitan Melbourne that were

deemed affordable – this number has plummeted to 28 in 2016.

And unless state and federal governments commit to tackling the dearth of affordable housing, it will only get worse, CHP chief executive Jenny Smith says.

While Melton is considered one of the most affordable suburbs across the state, there were fewer one and two bedroom flats coming to the market.

Ms Smith said there isn’t enough investment in smaller properties in Melton.

“The housing market is a private market –

and private developers have a responsibility to themselves and shareholders to make a profit,” Ms Smith said.

“Smaller units in outer suburbs aren’t always profitable.”

Ms Smith said “fierce competition” for one-bedroom rentals has made them unaffordable for average wage earners.

Subsequently, there’s been a boom in rooming houses, people living in caravan parks, and women sleeping in cars or couch-surfing.

“If it’s this hard for a woman on the average working wage to find somewhere affordable to

live, imagine how hard it is if you’ve fallen on hard times,” Ms Smith said.

“The affordable housing crisis and homelessness are two side of the same coin. We can’t solve homelessness without increasing the supply of affordable housing.”

CHP wants the state government to invest more in affordable one-bedroom properties, and introduce inclusionary zoning, which will ensure 10 per cent of new housing developments are designated as affordable.

And it has urged the federal government to wind back negative gearing policies.

Cello call to aid refugees Being so far removed from the conflict zones, it’s sometimes hard to really understand the struggles asylum seekers and refugees face, Miranda Brockman says.

But Ms Brockman, a cellist and Ballan resident, is on a mission to change that. She recently co-founded the Refugee Realities Project, which aims to raise awareness about the plights of refugees and asylum seekers.

“A group of us were concerned about the way our government is treating refugees coming to Australia,” Ms Brockman says.

“We wanted to be clear that we welcome refugees, and we want to work towards making our community a place that would ultimately welcome some refugees.”

Ms Brockman will host a cello concert in Ballan this weekend. She says it will be an opportunity for people to light a candle, “enter into their own internal space, and feel uplifted”.

says she wanted to share the effective sounds of the cello with the Ballan community.

Ms Brockman will be playing a range of music from classical composers, including Johann Sebastian Bach.

“Every human being has an inherent dignity, and one of the basic human rights is to be able to live safely,” Ms Brockman says.

“I can’t imagine the horrors that people are running away from.”

Cricket at the G revisited One hundred and fifty years ago, an Aboriginal cricket team from western Victoria travelled to Melbourne to play against the Melbourne Cricket Club at the ‘G’.

To commemorate this momentous occasion, the residents of Harrow, near Edenhope, held a special launch in March – the Mullagh Wills Foundation ‘Journey to the G’.

Police are on the hunt for a thief who stole three bottles of vodka from a liquor store at Darley. The man walked into the IGA Darley Champions store on Grey Street about 5pm on Tuesday, November 1. He picked up three bottles of vodka and put them down the back of his pants. Police say the man went to the front counter with a number of other items, and told the attendant he needed to go to an ATM. He left the other items on the counter, but fled in a silver Honda Accord with the vodka.

Crowds of festival-goers packed Melton’s 37th Djerriwarrh Festival at the weekend.

The day kicked off with a street parade of storytime characters heading down High Street to the Melton Recreation Reserve.

There was plenty to see and do, including free hip-hop workshops for teens and petting zoos for the littlies.

The bonfire was lit at 7.45pm before the festival’s epic fireworks finale at 10pm.

Melton council chief executive Kel Tori said the festival had a “long tradition” of bringing everyone together and showcasing the town’s diverse community.

Sometimes it costs just $2.50 to save the life of a newborn baby.

For the past few years, Zonta clubs across the country have been putting together birthing kits for newborns in developing countries.

The simple, but life-changing, kit includes a one-metre square of plastic, gloves, a sterilised scalpel, three pieces of string, five pieces of gauze, and a small amount of soap.

That’s all it takes to reduce the spread of tetanus infections during birth.

Zonta Club of Melton president Dawn Clark says the kits have had a remarkable impact on the number of babies contracting tetanus after being born in unsterile conditions.

She says women were giving birth on dirty floors, and umbilical cords being cut with rusty tin cans or broken bottles.

Students are also getting involved. On Friday, Melton Secondary College VCAL students presented an $800 cheque, and several hundred birthing kits, to Ms Clark.

“I wanted to get school kids involved because they’re our future. If we educate them and teach them about simple things, such as birthing kits, it will make a huge difference.”

MY PLACE Ben Courtice moved to Maddingley for a tree-change. The Moorabool Environment Group president tells Sumeyya Ilanbey he’s never looked back …

I live in Maddingley – I moved four years ago. I was in Footscray for a very long time. I wanted a tree-change, and Maddingley’s also a nicer place. It’s also cheaper to live here, giving me more options for what to do with my time and money.

What’s your favourite thing about living in Maddingley?

Probably the Werribee River that goes near my house. Maddingley is a big open space; it’s got wildlife and native vegetation, and you can meet a lot of the people living around here when you go for a walk.

What would you change about the area if you could?

I’d like to have better public transport options and cycling networks to cut traffic from the roads. We don’t have any good facilities for either of those in Bacchus Marsh at the moment. I look at the suburban homes that are being developed near Bacchus Marsh and it’s quite depressing to see how houses are built – I think we need better sustainability standards, things like passive solar uses, electricity instead of gas – they’re not mandated at all and they should be.

Where’s your favourite place to hang out in Moorabool?

The Lerderderg Gorge – it’s only 10 kilometres from my place, but you can get lost from

civilisation. It’s also peaceful and quiet. And I’m studying ecology, so there are all sorts of interesting things.

How did you get involved with the Moorabool Environment Group?

I used to work for an environment group in Melbourne so I was aware of MEG. Soon after I moved to Maddingley, I got involved. And the issues of coal mines were directly concerning to me because, if a new mine had been approved, it would have been less than a kilometre from my house.

What sort of a future would you like to leave to younger generations?

I think the main thing is a future that isn’t experiencing climate change. You can do some things in your own home and lifestyle, but we really need national and international action to stop burning fossil fuels as soon as possible.

Do you think people are becoming more aware of the consequences of not looking after the environment?

Yes. There was a very vocal climate change denial movement several years, but increasingly I find nobody’s paying attention to it. I think it’s because of a combination of things – people’s experience of changing weather and enough facts filtering through the media and educational institutions. But one without the other wouldn’t have worked.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds excellent street food in unusual places …

The Footscray Hub arcade mostly seems wonderfully timeless and very African.

But it’s only ever had, to the best of our knowledge, a single food outlet among its various hairdressers, clothes shops and more.

These days that shop goes under the moniker Somali Star and is, I reckon, at least the third incarnation of that food space.

It’s small – there’s two simple booths, so seating is restricted.

But most customers are of the takeaway variety, and come and happily go for the sambusas.

We’ve had these African versions of the samosa from here before – but never like this.

Oh no, these are bigger and better by quite some margin. And, in the case of our lamb number, absolutely delicious; the flaky pastry generously stuffed with minced meat, onion and herbs. And at $3.50, they’re a superb, dead-set bargain.

But while our sambusa is profoundly enjoyable, it is a holding pattern – pretty much – for our more substantial plates.

We’re warned there’ll be a wait time of about 15 minutes. But we don’t mind that as we are very much enjoying the moment.

What we get is unfussy, very enjoyable Somalian food.

Pasta/beef ($12) displays the Italian influence on north African cuisine.

The noodles go just right with a sauce that is a bit like a Somalian version of spag bol.

Both are excellent.

SOMALI STAR CAFE Address: Footscray Hub (arcade between Nicholson and Albert streets) The rice/lamb ($13) comes without adornments. We’re familiar with Somalian rice being cooked in stock.

This rice is quite different, pan fried (I think) with onion and small meat chunks.

The lamb is something else.

Normally, when eating lamb in neigbourhood and street food places, be they Indian, African or other, we are used to getting lovely meat that is nevertheless sporting its fair share of bone, fat and, or gristle.

We don’t mind that at all, as the quality cooking of the meat invariably outweighs the extraneous bits.

We admire the skill that makes such delicious food out of the cheapest cuts of meat.

In the case of the lamb at Somali Star, we get all the cooking skill and none of the rest – save for the single, visible bone piece.

The meat is very simply cooked; grilled and, as far as I can tell, unseasoned.

But it is so wonderful, tender and yummy that I reckon a heap of much flasher eateries/ pubs/cafes would be happy to serve it and charge a whole bunch more in the process.

Falcons take the points

New blood lifts Meltonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s BFL finals hopes

By Tara Murray Caroline Springs proved no match for Roxburgh Park Falcons on day two of their Victorian Turf Cricket Association north A1 encounter on Saturday.

Both sides were looking for their first win in VTCA after changing competitions in the off season, but it was the Falcons who came out on top.

Caroline Springs batsmen needed key partnerships if they were to get close to the Falconsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; 8-221, made on day one of the match.

At 4-83, Caroline Springs had work to do, but was still in the match. Three quick wickets changed the game, putting it squarely in the Falconsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; control.

Caroline Springs was eventually skittled for 129, with Nicholas Alexander making 25, while Christopher Vulic, at No.9 was unbeaten, also on 25.

The Falcons batted a second time and were 7-131 when stumps were called.

Caroline Springs captain Kane Sevior took four wickets.

Sydenham-Hillside was another side to get its first win in VTCA, defeating East Coburg.

Sydenham/Hillsideâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first innings of 274 proved too much for East Coburg, which was bowled out for 230. In its second innings, the Combine made 6-116.

Melton Centrals had to settle for first-innings points in its match against Melton South Primary School Cricket Club in west A1.

Centrals had claimed first-innings points on day one and were hunting for an outright win on Saturday. Resuming at 6-133, they were bowled out for 183, giving them a first-innings lead of 79.

The Royals made 167 in their second innings, ensuring they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t suffer an outright result.

Melton has added some more experience to its squad as it looks to end its Ballarat Football League finals drought.

Signings for the Bloods include two players with TAC Cup and VFL experience.

The well-travelled Ben Archard was the first signing announced by the Bloods.

Despite only being in his early 20s, Archard has played in the Bendigo, Central Murray and Western Region Northern Territory leagues.

He will be joined at the club by Matt Huckstepp, who comes across from Essendon District Football League premier division team Greenvale.

Huckstepp has played representative football with the Western Jets and played for Vic Metro at under-16 level.

He also played in the VFL with Coburg.

Matt Poland has also joined the club, coming across from Hoppers Crossing.

Poland played in an under-18.5 premiership with the Warriors in 2011 while coached by current Bloods coach Brad Murphy.

The Bloods have lost Matthew Notman, who is returning to his former club, Melton South.

Notman, who was at the Bloods for four years, is joining the Panthers as a playing assistant coach under Sean Tripplett and Brendan Fevola.

SPORT Women’s football academy takes flight with Jets The development of women’s football continues apace, with the Western Jets recently announcing their inaugural Youth Girls Academy.

The academy will run over the summer months, and will also coincide with the first season of the Women’s AFL from February to April.

With 75 players aged 15 to 18 invited to be part of the academy it is a significant investment from the Jets. Talent manager Shane Sexton is excited about the growth of the club and the women’s game.

“With the women’s side coming on board we think we’ll have about 500 families come

through the Western Jets,” Sexton said. “We’re already identifying boys at 14 and bringing them through the program, and it’s eventually going to be the same for the women, which is exciting for the growth of the game.We want to see all 75 girls that come into the academy reach their full potential, whether that’s playing AFL, VFL, or local club footy, it’s about creating opportunity for growth and development for everyone that walks through our doors.”

The academy has been in the pipeline for some time, with AFL Victoria pushing to develop a pathway for junior female footballers to work their way through to the new national competition.

The plan is for the academy to eventually run over the winter months.

“At the moment it will run in line with the AFL Women’s comp over the summer time through to April,” Sexton said. “It’s a 12 team competition, with all the TAC Cup regions having their own academy, the idea being that the players will have our program over summer and then go back to domestic footy at VFL or club level over the winter time.

“I don’t think it will be far down the track that we have a full season of AFL Women’s footy and TAC Cup footy over the winter months.”

The Jets also announced Bridget Barker as their head coach for the academy. Barker was

last year announced as the AFL’s woman of the year in the emerging leaders category. She also works at North Melbourne as the sport and recreation co-ordinator at The Huddle.

“Bridget’s been involved for awhile, both as a player and now as a coach, so when we were looking for a coach it was pretty apparent that she was well placed to take on the role,” Sexton said. “She had everything we were looking for really so it was a pretty easy appointment.”

The squad had its first meeting last week, with the program set to kick off on November 10.

By Tara Murray Darley is hoping Saturday’s performance with the bat is a taste of more consistent performances to come in the Ballarat Cricket Association.

The benchmark side with the ball last season, the Lions let themselves down with the bat on several occasions – and it cost them a finals spot.

On Saturday, the Lions had seven batsmen score 19 or more against Ballarat-Redan as they scored 8-264 on day one of the two-day match.

Lions coach Heath Pritchard said it was pleasing to have multiple players contribute to the total.

“That’s the only disappointing thing if I’m being harsh,” he said. “You need someone to go on with their innings – you can’t always rely on six or seven scores between 19 and 45.

“We’ve got to continue improving with the bat – it’s the difference between missing out on finals or being a real competitive side.”

Pritchard said Herring had showed some new-found maturity with the bat since returning from a year off.

“He’s been really patient so far,” he said. “One of the knocks on him in the past has been he was prone to a rash shot, which he hasn’t done so far [this season].

“He went out to a full-blooded cut shot, not a silly shot.

“He’s got a bit more maturity and I think a big score is around the corner.”

Pritchard said he was confident of getting a second straight win next week.

“We’ll back ourselves in,” he said. “We were the benchmark with the ball last season and hard to beat with a score like we’ve made.

“Only one side made more than 145 against us last year and that was on hard wicket.”

In other games, North Ballarat is closing in on first-innings points against Wendouree.

North Ballarat will resume at 4-97, needing 129 for victory.

Cliffhanger leaves Melton licking its wounds It was a second straight cliffhanger for Melton in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association’s east-west competition.

Having won on the final ball of the innings against Box Hill in the previous round, the Lions had to turn their attention to the shortest format of the game against an undefeated Altona in a T20 match on Saturday.

Winning the toss, the Lions changed their batting order to suit the shorter format. It back-fired, with Jake Thornton-Gielen bowled out for three.

Playing coach Nathan Geisler and Ben MacRae set about building a total, putting on 36 before Geisler was out for 17.

Michael Alexander was run out soon after, and the Lions were 3-56. The middle order and MacRae kept the scoreboard ticking over, but they were made to pay, with three run-outs.

The Lions finished their 20 overs at 6-130.

MacRae top-scored for the Lions for a second straight week, making 53, while skipper David Kirk made 27. Geisler said the Lions were probably 10-20 runs short of an ideal score.

“We lacked the big partnerships in the middle of the innings,” he said. “Every time the new batsmen came in, they had to restart.”

By contrast, the Lions made a perfect start with the ball, with Ashley Sweet taking the wicket of David Kinsella before the As opened

their account. But Altona got going with Aaron Maynard and Shane Jones pushing the score along.

When Jones was out for 15, Maynard was joined by skipper Adam Yates. This duo pushed the As within sight of victory.

The wicket of Yates rekindled hope for the Lions, but it wasn’t to be, with Altona hitting its winning runs off the third last ball of the match.

Sweet, Brad Jones and Jake Charge took one wicket each. Geisler said they were left to rue not making the most of their opportunities.

“We gave ourselves the chance to win, but didn’t take the most of our chances.

“We dropped a catch early, and missed a couple of run-outs that would have helped.”

The Lions sit 10th on the ladder after three rounds. On Saturday, they host the win-less Hoppers Crossing in a one-day match.

Geisler said while the side is more competitive than 12 months ago, there needs to be more consistency across the board.

“We could be 2-1,” he said.

“We’ve had one or two people performing with the ball, and then one or two with the bat.

“We need other blokes to step up and not rely on the same guys every week.”

Burras set cracking pace

By Tara Murray Diggers Rest Bulla’s batsmen have finally found some form and put it on the scoreboard in a big way in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup. Batting has been the Burras’ weak point so far this season – they have struggled to post decent scores and have lost two games in the process.

On Saturday, the Burras had a different look about them as they took on Riddell in their first two-day match of the season.

The Burras made a massive 324.

Burras playing coach Kevin Barker said it was good to see the hard work the players had been putting in with the bat paying off.

“It was really nice to get a score like that,” he said. “We had been putting in the hard work, but not produced the scores we had wanted to.

The first few rounds haven’t been great and we know batting hasn’t been our strength at the club.”

Off-season recruit Steven Fogarty was the star of the day, making 99.

Barker said Fogarty was making up for lost time after a pre-season interrupted by football commitments.

Barker said it was cracking ball from Riddell’s Matthew Livingstone that removed Fogarty a single short of a century.

“We were all shattered for him when he want out,” Barker said.

“It’s now something he can build on … next time it’ll give him more motivation to get the century.”

Barker was the next best of the batsmen making 51, with seven players making 22 or more. Barker said having multiple contributors was something the Burras were continuing to work on.

“You need to have one player get a big score and everyone else contribute,” he said.

“Usually, we have one guy contribute.”

Heath Wadden took three wickets for Riddell.

Barker said the job was only half done in the match against Riddell, especially considering the power of the opposition’s batting order.

Bombers skipper Mick Allen has scored two centuries in three matches.

“They’re a really good side,” Barker said.

“If we can knock off a team like them early on, it would be really good.”

In other matches, Bacchus Marsh is on track for victory against Sunbury.

The Cobras bowled Sunbury out for 118, with Madushanka Ekanayaka taking 4-36.

In reply, the Bulls were 2-59 at stumps.

Peter Lalor made 39.

A Michael Treweek century guided Rupertswood to 8-241 against Romsey.

Treweek made 102 at the top of the order to help his side post a competitive total.

Warren Else enjoyed his time in the middle for Woodend, making 116 against Gisborne.

Woodend posted 7-259 from its overs.

With last season’s premiership under its belt, Melton has come back for more this season in the women’s Victorian Premier Cricket seconds competition.

All players from the winning side have returned this season, keen for a tilt at back-to-back premierships.

Lions’ coach Nicole Martin said having all the playing group return made things a lot easier.

“It’s the same group of girls, the same mates,” she said. “The girls wanted to go around again. It’s nice to know you don’t have to go chasing players every week.”

Martin said the club has taken a similar off season approach to last year, with players tackling indoor cricket.

“Pre-season was done inside, with most of the girls playing,” said Martin, who is part of the Australian indoor team.

“Indoor cricket fits in with our outdoor cricket, and we don’t think it ruins our cricket like some people.

“We won the premiership last year coming off the back of an indoor season.”

This season’s start was delayed for the Lions, with their first three matches called off due to the weather.

Two matches were washed out and the third called off due to dangerous winds.

Once on the park, the Lions secured a first-up win after chasing down Carlton-Brunswick’s total of 156 with four overs to spare.

Captain Stephanie Theodore top-scored with 32 in her side’s 5-157, four players posted 20 plus.

Martin said it was a good even performance to kick off the season.

“It was a really good chase in tough conditions,” she said. “We’re an even side. It was another handy innings from Steph … Briony Polkinghorne played an important anchor role.”

On Sunday, the Lions made it consecutive wins as they again pulled out all stops to chase down a big total.

Brighton District made a massive 191 from its innings, but it ended up no match for the Lions.

Polkinghorne was the best of the bowlers, taking three wickets.

The Lions made 2-193, hitting the winnings runs with an over to spare, and now sit atop of the table after five rounds.

Meanwhile, it was a big off season for Martin who coached Japan’s women’s team at the International Cricket Council’s Women’s East Asia Pacific Cricket World Cup qualifier tournament.

The Japanese team failed to qualify for the world cup.

“It was a learning curve,” she said.

“There wasn’t a lot of translation, so a very large learning experience.”
