NEWS + SPORT + PROPERTY GUIDE Plan to support South Sudanese teens

By Sumeyya Ilanbey A support and mentor program that aims to take Melton’s South Sudanese youth off the streets and get them into a supported environment is set to launch this weekend. Community leaders John Garang Kon and Deruka Dekuek have been heavily involved in supporting South Sudanese families and connecting them to local services for the past several years. Mr Kon says one of the most pressing issues facing South Sudanese youth is unemployment, and a recent spike in early school drop-outs. “Most of these young people have lived in refugee camps, where there was no formal education,” he says. “They don’t understand the system, and they haven’t received any education at a young age. “When you don’t have that basic foundation, it’s hard to navigate through the education system in Australia.” After talking to South Sudanese youth on the streets and mentoring them after school, Mr Kon noticed a disconnect between youth and mainstream organisations. He decided to come up with a better plan to engage his community’s young people, encourage them to stay in school and strive for a better future. Afterschool homework clubs,

sports activities, camping and personal reflection sessions are part of the support plan. Mr Kon says while the ultimate goal is to integrate South Sudanese youngsters into the rest of the community, a targeted approach to close the gap is vital. “The reason I go to the streets and talk to them is to help them recognise the skills they’re good at,” he says. “So if they’re good at soccer, we’ll direct them to soccer clubs. If they’re good at music, we’ll direct them to music classes. “If they’re good at school, we’ll support them to stay in school.” South Sudanese youngsters are suffering and struggling, Ms Dekuek says. If her team can engage them, she says this will markedly reduce the anti-social behaviour and activities young people get involved in. She says young migrants and refugees feel marginalised and labelled, and it’s important to offer them South Sudanese role models who’ve gone through similar experiences and hardships. “Some of these children don’t have visions for the future, or have a career goal,” Ms Dekuek says. “They don’t have goals, so we want to support them, and reinforce to them they can do whatever they set their minds to.” For more information or to volunteer, call 0411 603 170.

Program targets youth

Hirsute suit fit for health November is the month of men, moustaches and “outlandish” mo’ suits – just ask Dennis Stevenson. The 34-year-old hates being told to “grow a pair” or “suck it up” – instead he’s dedicated the past eight Novembers to growing his facial hair in support of Movember. Mr Stevenson says he’s had many friends affected by depression, some have committed suicide. “If men are going to be on top of their physical and mental health, they need to discuss their mental and physical health,” the Melton West man says. “There’s been years of entrenched masculine dogma … and we need to change that.” To donate, search Dennis Stevenson at au.movember.com. New mayors in the chambers By Sumeyya Ilanbey Long-time councillor and three-time mayor Sophie Ramsey will again don the robes and chain of Melton council’s top role. The Coburn ward councillor beat Lara Carli, 5-4, to claim the mayoralty at last week’s statutory meeting. Fellow Coburn ward councillor Bob Turner will serve as Cr Ramsey’s deputy. Councillors also voted for one-year terms for mayors and deputies. The mayoral allowance has been set at $101,104 per year, and the councillor allowance at $31,653. In her acceptance speech, Cr Ramsey said she is looking forward to the next 12 months working with the community. “This team of councillors will work very

closely with our administration to make sure we deliver everything we possibly can to keep up with the growth,” she said. “Family, friends, community, all of you – thank you. Let’s get the next four years on the road.” Cr Ramsey said representing the community of Melton was “humbling and a privilege”, and she said she’s grateful for community support. Meanwhile, East Moorabool ward’s David Edwards was crowned Moorabool mayor unopposed. Tonia Dudzik will serve as his deputy after beating John Keogh, 5-2. The mayoral and deputy mayoral terms have been set at one year. The councillor allowance will be $24,127 and the mayoral allowance $74,654. In his acceptance speech, Cr Edwards said councillors needed to work together, and

with state and federal governments, to create opportunities for smaller towns, to ensure Bacchus Marsh and Ballan’s “rapid growth” is better managed, and to maintain the shire’s “character” and create employment. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow councillors for the trust and confidence that they have shown in me, to allow me to represent them over the next 12 months,” Cr Edwards said. “I have learnt much over the last four years from the previous mayors [Pat] Toohey, [Paul] Tatchell and [Allan] Comrie, all of whom have had different styles and different strengths. “Whilst I will have my own style and will grow into the job, I will build on the experience provided by the previous mayors and my fellow councillors.”

Young mum refused bail A 29-year-old mother of two, who allegedly stole a credit card from a car parked at St Albans train station, has been denied bail for a second time in the Supreme Court of Melbourne. In a hearing on November 3, Justice Priest refused Kirsty Lumley’s application due to the “significant risk” she would commit further offences while on bail. The woman has been charged with a number of indictable offences, including three charges of theft, two charges of handling stolen goods, one charge of attempting to obtain property by deception, and one charge of possessing a drug of dependence. She also faces a number of summary offences, including failing to stop a motor vehicle, driving while disqualified, unlicenced driving, driving an unregistered vehicle and using number plates not issued to the vehicle being driven. Lumley has remained in custody since her arrest on September 11. In a submission to the court, the 29-year-old claimed there was insufficient evidence that she was a disqualified driver on September 11. Lumley’s first application for bail in the Sunshine Magistrates Court on September 28 was also refused, on the grounds that she presented an unacceptable risk of committing an offence while on bail.

Finally, time for flowers to go on show It’s bloomin’ wonderful … finally. Spring has sprung and the roses are out … albeit a little late. And the annual Ballan Red Cross flower show, always a sign of warmer weather, is back. Event organiser Mary Williams says the luncheon and flower show has been a hit with locals and tourists for almost four decades. She says it’s an opportunity for people to showcase their beautiful craftwork or flowers they’ve been lovingly growing. “For a lot of people, it’s a social day, but it’s also for a good cause,” Ms Williams says. Author Tor Roxburgh will be this year’s guest speaker and will talk on drugs during the event, which starts at noon on Friday, November 25. Luncheon tickets cost $25, but entry to the flower show is free. For more information, call 5368 1128. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Ruby brings home gold Guidance from a Commonwealth Games triple-jump bronze medallist over the past 12 months has paid off for a Taylors Hill junior track and field star. Fourteen-year-old Ruby Pizzo took home two gold, a silver and three personal bests from the Victorian All Schools Track and Field Championship at Lakeside Stadium earlier this month (November 4-6). Ruby, a Gilson College student, began working with 2006 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist and former World Junior Championship finalist Alwyn Jones about a year ago at an Essendon athletics club, after her mum Jayne asked for elite coaching assistance.

“I was told the program wouldn’t be modified – she’d have to keep up with the older athletes, Jayne said. “And she has. With a personal best of 11.49 metres, Ruby claimed gold in the under 15 triple jump at the state championships, while another PB of 13.14 seconds sealed her win in the 90 metre hurdles. She then made it three personal bests when she ran 30.42 seconds in the 200 metre hurdles to win silver. Ruby began her career with Keilor Little Athletics aged five. She will now represent the state at the national titles in Canberra in December in 90 metre hurdles and triple jump. Ben Cameron

Health centre dumps ‘toxic’ name By Alexandra Laskie Health service ISIS Primary Care has changed its name to IPC Health to avoid “toxic” associations with the jihadist militant group also known as Daesh. The not-for-profit community health group was named after the ancient Egyptian goddess Isis when it founded about 17 years ago. The goddess’s name is the Greek form of the ancient Egyptian word for “throne”, and Isis was worshipped as a magical healer who

cured the sick and brought the dead back to life. But the name became an issue for the health service, which is largely funded by the health and human services department, when the terrorist group adopted the name Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in 2014. IPC Health chief executive Alex Johnstone said about 18 months ago people had begun to push for a name change. “The name is toxic,” he said. “Staff told me that, when they wore their lanyards at the supermarket, they were intimidated.”

“This is something that has been a concern for a significant amount of time. But the process has been quite time consuming – we have to go through due diligence,” Mr Johnstone said. He said staff who worked with refugees from Iraq told him the name would confuse and frighten them. “And that’s a real concern because these people need to be supported in their health needs,” he said. “There was a very strong message that it wasn’t helpful to have ‘ISIS’ and ‘care’ in the same name.”

The new branding, IPC Health, stands for “improving and promoting community health”. Mr Johnstone said the “I” also represents the individual, and how the organisation can tailor medical services to each person’s needs. The new business name was launched on November 4 to coincide with the opening of the organisation’s refurbished St Albans head office. Its clinics are also at Taylors Lakes, Deer Park, Hoppers Crossing, Wyndham Vale, Sunshine and Altona Meadows.

A real good poppy yarn When the Bacchus Marsh RSL Ladies Auxiliary made a call-out for 3000 knitted poppies earlier this year, members didn’t know what to expect. But in less than five months, knitting enthusiasts went past the 3000-mark. Auxiliary president Bev Kummerlowe says people from far and wide, and even women with health problems, pitched in to knit one of the most iconic war symbols. “Australians have so much respect for the RSL,” Ms Kummerlowe said. “They’re really passionate about it … they’ll help you out whenever they can.” The poppies will be made into wreaths by a local florist and handed to the Bacchus Marsh Great War Centenary Committee to be used in a commemorative service in August, 2018, to mark 100 years since the planting of Bacchus March’s Avenue of Honour. In a bid to thank the men and women who donated their time and knitted the poppies,

the ladies auxiliary and the centenary committee will host a morning tea on Friday, November 25, from 10.30am at the Bacchus Marsh RSL, 203 Main Street. Detail: 5367 1855 Sumeyya Ilanbey

Mental health in line for funds By Sumeyya Ilanbey Melton youngsters experiencing their first episodes of psychosis could soon get better – and more reliable – access to mental health care. North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network is set to fund services and projects that will help improve the outcomes for young people experiencing psychosis for the first time. While Melton isn’t overly-represented in mental illness statistics, the network’s acting chief executive, Julie Borninkhof, said the municipality doesn’t have services or medical

- Julie Borninkhof centres to cope with the population growth. She said there tends to be a more reactive, rather than proactive, approach in Melton. “The research shows us that, while there isn’t necessarily a significantly higher number of young people in Melton accessing services, those who are requiring services can’t find them, and the services that are there aren’t

Mental illness is one of the biggest issues for people aged between 15-24, with Headspace data revealing there is a greater progression of mental illness among young people in the north-west. Ms Borninkhof said the health network wants to fund services that reach young people many of whom wouldn’t otherwise access care, but who would benefit from personalised, holistic support. Tenders for new youth mental health services will close on Friday, November 25, with successful providers to be announced in late December. Tender information can be found online at: goo.gl/Pjx6LR.

frequently available,” Ms Borninkhof said. The services must have a “local flavour”, as young people don’t necessarily access generic services, she said. And unless young people are able to access treatment early on, their mental health could deteriorate further, she stressed. “We want to make sure there is support available for people at an early stage, before they are at risk of more serious interventions, like hospitalisation. “It’s really an urgent issue for us, which is why we are working to establish partnerships as quickly as possible and get services operating from early next year.”

Disco back in its groove Police are expecting a dancefloor packed with young groovers when they host Melton’s first Blue Light Disco in more than 15 years. The disco, to be held at Gap on Graham, is part of a wider project to engage Melton’s youth in fun and social activities in a safe setting. Gap on Graham vice-president and Melton councillor, Bob Turner said his group had approached Melton police earlier this year to give the disco another shot. “There’s plenty of structured things, such as sports activities, to do for youth but not a lot of unstructured things,” Cr Turner said. “We just wanted to give young people an outlet, more than anything else.” Police and event organisers are hoping dozens of young people come along to get their boogie on the dancefloor.

The Blue Light Disco, for children aged 7-12, will run from 6-8pm on Friday, December 9, at the Gap on Graham, 5 Graham Street, Melton. Cost is $5. For more information, call 0414 769 605. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Teacher’s unpaid work mounts By Sumeyya Ilanbey Melton and Moorabool teachers are buckling under workloads that include at least 14 hours of unpaid overtime every week. And the extra strain is having a negative impact on the quality of teaching and student learning, the Australian Council of Educational Research workload survey reports. The research, commissioned by the Victorian branch of the Australian Education Union, reveals regional teachers are working more than 53 hours a week, while principals work

more than 60 hours. AEU Victorian president Meredith Peace described the workloads as reaching “crisis point”. Staff, she said, are doing more with less and working longer hours to ensure students don’t miss out on quality education. “Ninety per cent of teachers in the region say that their workload negatively affects the quality of their teaching,” Ms Peace said. “And more than 80 per cent of local teachers don’t have enough time to plan their classes to the level that they would want. It’s completely unsustainable.”

‘‘

More than 80 per cent of teachers don’t have - Meredith Peace enough time

’’

Melton and Moorabool teachers were among 13,000 staff surveyed statewide. Of these, about a third said they regularly consider leaving their profession. Ms Peace said doing so much unpaid work took its toll on teachers, who find it difficult to give students the individual support they need.

Golf club relays message Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, put on your running shoes, smile for the cameras and brace yourselves for an 18-hour relay, all for a good cause. Moorabool’s Relay for Life on November 26 and 27 will raise money for cancer research. But event organiser Gillian Loughman said relay numbers are down this year … only 120 people have so far registered, compared with previous years when about 400 people showed up. “We want to make this event a success … bigger and better for years to come,” she said. In a bid to kickstart the fundraising for Relay for Life, Sweeney Estate Agents Bacchus Marsh will host a golf day on Friday. Sweeney office manager Rowena De Kuyper said she hoped many locals would join in to support the cause. “It’s [cancer research] a cause that’s close to a lot of people’s hearts,” Ms De Kuyper said.

“Relay for Life has been going on for years, and it’d be sad to see it diminished, with not a lot of people supporting it.” The golf day will run from 11am until 5pm on Friday, November 18, at Bacchus Marsh Golf Club, 18 Links Road, Darley. Tickets cost $60. The Relay for Life event will start at 2.45pm on Saturday, November 26, and finish at 9am on Sunday, November 27, at Darley Civic and Community Hub, Halletts Way. Tickets cost $25. And teachers are not left with enough time to complete their job, including lesson planning and assessing student learning. Ms Peace has blamed the lack of classroom support for teachers on the “chronic underfunding” of Victorian public schools. A state government spokesman said: “Our teachers do an amazing job and we’re investing billions of dollars in Victoria’s education system to support them while we ensure all students have access to a great education. These matters are subject to the EBA negotiations currently underway.”

Just rewards for effort Hard work does pay off. After months in training, two young Melton athletes won at the Victorian Schools State Championships. Siona, 12, and Alyssa, 9, competed last month against some of the state’s most talented young athletes. Siona threw 11.73 metres in his shotput event, and 34.88 metres in the discus, winning silver for both and earning a spot in the Victorian team which will compete at this month’s national athletics carnival in New South Wales. Meanwhile, Alyssa won gold in the shotput after throwing 9.56 metres, and silver in discus with a throw of 29.10 metres. But due to her age, she is not eligible to compete in the nationals. Siona described the competition as “really fun” and said he really enjoyed seeing himself improve.

“I’m excited about going [to New South Wales] to compete and be up against the best.” Alyssa has been doing shotput for the past five years and, even though she’s entered many competitions and won many awards, she has never received a state championship medal. Grade 6 teacher Lauren Marriott said the school was now organising a fundraising event to buy Siona the right uniform, accommodation and flights to New South Wales. “Siona has … been an active and talented member of many school and regional sporting teams, and has undertaken leadership roles,” Ms Marriott said. “Siona’s attendance at the national carnival would be a just reward for his outstanding achievements.”

Swimmer tackles Tasman By Sumeyya Ilanbey Poppe-Simone Sakr knows a thing or two about hard work – the Melton West teen has been selected to represent Special Olympics Victoria at the trans-Tasman tournament in New Zealand next weekend. She’ll be one of 120 Australian athletes head to the land of the long white cloud to compete in the tournament … and she’s the youngest. “I’m looking forward to going to New Zealand,” she says. “I think it’s going to be a great experience, and I’m excited to compete with everyone else. “This is really great because I feel like all the hard work in the pool has finally paid off.” Poppe-Simone, 15, who has an intellectual disability and autism, has been in the water since she was only three months old, but she’s only been with Special Olympics Victoria for the past eight months. The teenager trains twice a week for two hours, and hopes to one day become a professional swimmer. “I just want to advise people who want to be swimmers to just really work hard, train hard, and do whatever you can to achieve that dream,” Poppe-Simone says. “I’ve made some really great friends at the pool, and they’ll be coming to New Zealand with me.” For more information about the trans-Tasman tournament, visit goo.gl/ x1pPWA.

Older? No work? Take a survey … A new study will investigate the problems mature-age Melton and Moorabool jobseekers face when looking for work. The Brotherhood of St Laurence will interview residents aged between 45 and 70, older Newstart clients and those using job-active providers from Bacchus Marsh, Brookfield, Melton and Rockbank. Principal researcher Dina Bowman said the study aims to better understand mature-age jobseekers, and their experiences looking for work. While youth unemployment is at an all-time high across the west (more than 20 per cent), the plight of older unemployed people is rarely discussed, and “very different”, Dr Bowman said. Mature-age jobseekers tend to be unemployed longer, and quite often enter retirement with little or no savings. “In part, they may face age discrimination,” Dr Bowman said. “But [some] jobs … no longer exist.” Dr Bowman said older people unemployed for a long time often find online recruitment a daunting task. Those interested in taking part are asked to complete a short survey, after which participants will be selected for a 45-60 minute phone interview. Participants will get a $50 Coles voucher. Dr Bowman said interpreters could help people who don’t speak English. Details: bsl.org.au/matureagejobs or call 9483 1330. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Death on demand is so personal The debate is dividing Australians – is euthanasia dying with dignity, or murder? By Adem Saban Imagine this … somebody you love is in hospital. They can barely eat, speak, or move. All they want to do is die. What would you do? Earlier this year, a parliamentary committee recommended that State Parliament adopt reforms that would give some terminally ill patients the right to choose to die when living gets too much. Many of those against the move refer to it as a form of murder. Those in favour say it’s dying with dignity. Western suburbs resident Vicki Lewer is staunchly against voluntary euthanasia. When her mother, Lesley, was 33, she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Her condition deteriorated rapidly. A decade on, she was paralysed from the neck down and confined to a wheelchair. Lesley returned to New Zealand, where she lived alone in a flat. Technology allowed her to use voice commands and a mouth control to open the door, turn the lights on, the television, and even turn pages of books. She went on to spend eight years studying for a psychology degree. But it wasn’t all smooth sailing for Lesley. “My mum spoke of a time when she was in such severe pain that she wanted to die,” Vicki said. “A doctor came to her home to give her some strong pain relief and, in my mum’s own words: ‘I would have been glad to die at the time … but it was not the death I wanted, but relief. The desire to live returned in the same instant the pain left’.” Vicki says her mother was horrified, thinking ‘what if the doctor had listened to me?’ “Mum said that people who wanted to die were depressed, and that the depression is what should be treated,” Vicki said. “I look at her life

Why am I still here? I’m better off gone.’ - Lisa Heinrichs, on her ‘Nannu’ He’d had enough

and I know that, put in extreme circumstances, people can still cope when given the positive support they need.” Vicki believes some elderly people may consider themselves a burden on their families, so they seek death.

Hoppers Crossing’s Lisa Heinrichs has a different opinion. Growing up, she was very close to her ‘nannu’ Emmanuel Barbara. He was a vision of health, having his first hospital visit at 84. But that all changed … aged 90, Nannu called

Lisa in excruciating pain. She rushed to his Yarraville home and took him to the hospital. They later found out he had bladder cancer. The following year, he got worse. After many more visits to the hospital, he was no longer able to live alone, and moved in with Lisa and

’’

her family. Nannu required constant care, so months later, he moved into a nursing home. At 94, he fell and broke his femur. The doctors didn’t expect him to make it through surgery, but he did. But Nannu never walked again. From that point forth, his health deteriorated. He was bed-ridden, wore nappies and couldn’t even feed himself. As he battled the cancer, his kidneys began to fail and he had internal bleeding. “For Nannu, it was humiliating and degrading,” Lisa said. “His body was failing him, but mentally, he was fully aware of what was happening. “When I’d visit he’d ask ‘why am I still here? I’m better off gone.’ He had had enough. He was always tired. “Sitting by his bed while he suffered, and not having answers for him, was the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” Lisa said. “That isn’t life. “One day, as I left the hospital, he started crying. He said ‘I’m sorry for being a burden. I’m sorry you have to stay with me.’ It broke my heart.” After that, Nannu refused all food and medication. Six days later, after eight months of extreme pain, he died. Completely in support of voluntary euthanasia, Lisa acknowledges there needs to be procedures in place to ensure its practice isn’t abused. “Nannu just wanted to die. We don’t let animals suffer in that way, so why do we make human beings? “It’s not fair. There is no dignity in that. Voluntary euthanasia is not murder. It’s kindness.”

MY PLACE Being involved with the Melton Valley Rotary Club has allowed Randall Brown to make friends in the area and have fun while working for the community. The club president speaks with Sumeyya Ilanbey. What’s your connection to Melton? I moved here from Ballarat 27 years ago with my family for career advancement to the Gas and Fuel Corporation in Melbourne. I was a tradesman in Ballarat and undertook further studies in engineering, which supported my career change to the gas and fuel industry. I have had various roles with national energy companies since corporatisation and privatisation. What’s your favourite thing about living in Melton?

What would you change about the area if you could? Working in Melbourne, it will be good to see the train line duplicated and perhaps a new basketball stadium for the youth of Melton. More work opportunities for our youth are important. Where’s your favourite place to hang out in Melton? I enjoy meals at various locations such as Tabcorp Park, local hotels, Stones and Q Lounge. I play the occasional game of golf at Melton Valley Golf Club and enjoy country regions close to Melton such as Ballarat and Buninyong.

(Damjan Janevski)

Its wide open spaces, close proximity to the city of Melbourne and country, housing affordability and country town feeling. It’s so easy to get around the town.

How did you get involved with Rotary? Around six years ago, my daughter was studying to be an orthoptist at La Trobe University when she was selected to participate in an overseas Rotary eye-screening mission to the Philippines. She participated in eye surgery in remote areas that delivered sight back to many individuals. It was a heart-warming experience that she greatly benefitted from. I was impressed with the program and thought it was time to give something back. I have

been a member for over four years and am now president of Melton Valley Rotary.

equipment to Tonga to support education and the wellbeing of the less fortunate there.

What are some of the things the Rotary Club has achieved in the past few years?

Why does the club find it important to donate to local community groups?

Our club undertakes various activities to raise funds for local and international projects. Recently we made a substantial donation to the Gap on Graham, which we believe delivers a fantastic service to the youth of our community. Each year we send a container of goods and

Many community groups deliver important services … but are not self-funding. Rotary Melton Valley has an active membership that is better suited to raise funds. At the same time we enjoy good fellowship and develop the leadership skills of our members.

SPORT Struggling Saints set on strengthening middle order St Anthonys needs to get back to basics with the bat if it’s to turn around its form in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association B-grade competition. St Anthonys started the season with two wins before a washout but has now suffered two straight losses. Captain-coach Cam Clayton puts both the losses down to the batting. “The game against Wallan we didn’t bat our overs out. We didn’t get too many partnerships going and it cost us. “If we’d batted out the overs we would have won, and it was the same thing against Bacchus Marsh. “You’re not going to win too many matches

batting for 57 overs. We started okay, but then we lost quick wickets and you have to try and make up for it. If you bat for your 75, 80 overs you’re going to win 90 per cent of your matches.” On Saturday, St Anthonys was defending the 184 it made on day one of the match against Bacchus Marsh. The game went down to the wire, with Bacchus Marsh needing 10 runs with one wicket in hand. The Bulls managed to get the winning runs, finishing 9-190. Clayton said they would look to shore up the middle order in the next few rounds. Former player Wes Greig has returned to the

club, while Matthew Perry is a chance to return from injury. “We’re looking at making a couple of changes and getting in some blokes who can play that role in the middle order. We need to tighten that up a bit.” While the batting has been letting them down, Clayton said the bowling side of things was on track. “We’ve got a lot of options and all-rounders. The key for us now is to bat out the overs.” St Anthonys is fifth on the ladder, just over 10 points behind its next opponent Sunbury United. Clayton said this was one game they identified in the pre-season as a particularly

big fixture. “Sunbury United will be a good test. They’ve been in McIntyre Cup and won many premierships. Our group wants to play McIntyre Cup. This will show where we’re at and whether we’re at that level. “It’s going to be so close this season, you don’t know who will finish in the top four. Elsewhere, East Sunbury and Macedon played out a tie. The Thunder needed one run for victory off the final ball, but Lachlan Wilkins was run-out. Sunbury United held off Lancefield to win by 29 runs, while Wallan defeated Ashfield. Tara Murray

Eagles win with youth By Tara Murray Eynesbury’s hot start to the Western Suburbs Churches & Community Cricket Association A.E Lowe Shield season has continued. Having won their opening two matches of the season, the Eagles put on a batting display against fourth-placed Rockbank on Saturday. The Eagles made 9-317 off their overs on day one of the two day-match. Speaking before the game, Eagles’ treasurer Terry Psaila said the season’s start had been positive so far for the club overall. Much of the team that has played off in the past two grand finals has returned, but the club has added some youth. Captain-coach Luke Castle has returned to the side after playing with Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association side Williamstown, while his brother, Hayden, who has played premier and sub-district cricket, has also returned. “I think it has strengthened us,” Psaila said. “Luke and Hayden are young and we would like to see them around for a long time. “We’re getting older in the senior sides and we want to get the younger players coming through. “A lot of the older players want to play in the lower grades with their sons.” Graham and Shane Brooks and Jason Compton also joined the club in the off-season. Psaila said getting their younger players to progress from juniors to seniors was a focus. “We’ve got two under-14 teams and three under-12s this season, as well as more than 30 players in Milo Cricket,” he said. “Next season we’re looking at having an under-16 team. “Instead of making changes to the senior sides when we have players missing, younger players from the fourths may get a chance in the senior side. “They will get better and better and start pushing into the seniors.” Psaila said the senior side was keen to atone for last season’s grand final loss. “It was a pretty disappointing result, last year,” he said. “Our batting let us down and our good bowling attack didn’t stand up in the grand final. “We’re aiming to finish in the top two. We want to win premierships in both our top sides. “It’s early on, but both sides are in the top two.” Meanwhile, Taylors Hill has a battle on its hands if it is to take the points against AA Maidstone. Taylors Hill was bowled out for just 120, with Maidstone 3-74 in reply at stumps.

Mitch Banner is making the move from Darley to Melton South. (Shawn Smits)

Fevola, Tripplett sign up winners Former AFL player Mitch Banner is the latest signing announced by Melton South. Banner, who had 19 games across four seasons with Port Adelaide, played his junior football with the Ballarat Football League club before being drafted at the end of 2008. Since been delisted at the end of 2012, he played in Perth, and then with Williamstown in the VFL, where he was part of their premiership side in 2015. Last season, he played for fellow BFL side Darley, where he played 17 games, kicking 38 goals. The Devils were knocked out in the opening round of the finals. Banner’s signing is the latest under new coaches Brendan Fevola and Sean Tripplett. The duo are hoping to turn Melton South from a side that didn’t win a game this season, to one of the powerhouses of the competition. Banner is one of several past players returning to the Panthers. Matt Notman, who has been playing with Melton, returns after four years, and will be a playing assistant coach. Former Panthers’ captain and best and fairest winner Ben Peters returns to the club after a stint with Riddell in the Riddell District Football League. Other signings are two-time Essendon District Football League best and fairest winner Mark Lynch, former Western Region Football League competition medal winner Shannon Broadbent, and brothers Adam and Mozzie Houli. Hayden Castle bats for Eynesbury against Rockbank. (Shawn Smits)

Avenue still seeking a pathway to bowls success The Avenue remains without a win in Ballarat District Bowls division 1. Hoping to open its account against Sebastopol, the Avenue found the going tough on Saturday after a week off due to its fixture clashing with the Victoria Open. Club secretary Peter Glass said they had been hoping to kick-start their season after a disappointing start. Instead, they lost 111 (17)-83 (1). “Bill Hawken’s rink did best for Avenue in securing a draw, despite losing five shots on the last two ends,” Glass said. “Steve Sullivan’s rink trailed by 11 shots after 18 ends and staged a mini-comeback over the

final ends to go down by five shots. Ben Gould, in his first game as skip, also came home strongly to lose by just two shots, while Grant Stirling’s rink found it difficult to match their experienced opposition.” The Avenue’s division 2’s also struggled on the way to a 116 (18)-77 (0) scoreline. Glass’s rink lost by three shots; Glenys Kay’s lost by four shots after trailing by as much as 15 shots; Bob Delaney’s rink lost by 12; and Peter Thistlewaite’s rink went down by 20 shots. The division 5 and 7 sides had a bit more luck, both recording good wins. The division 5 side won 1-2 (14)-93 (4) against Learmonth, while the Sevens defeated Ballarat, 130 (18)-66 (0).

In Bowls Victoria Pennant, Melton had a confidence-boosting win against Werribee. After a couple of close losses, Melton comprehensively knocked off Werribee, 89 (16)-55 (2). The win, Melton’s second, leaves it in fifth position, just six points behind fourth-placed Glenroy. In the Central Highlands Bowls division, Bacchus Marsh suffered a big loss to Lancefield in blustery conditions. Justin Webster’s was Marsh’s only winning rink as the other three struggled to match their opponents. Bacchus Marsh sits sixth on the ladder after five rounds, nine points behind fourth-placed Kyneton Golf.

Storm settles new turf By Tara Murray Sydenham/Hillside is quickly adjusting to life as a turf cricket club. Having made the move to the Victorian Turf Cricket Association in the offseason, the club is excited by what lays ahead. Captain-coach Kane Twentyman said the move was necessary to ensure the club could retain its talented young players. “The club has been represented in the NWMCA for a long time and has been competitive in the top grade,” he said. “The club lost a lot of players, and I was one of them. They were losing juniors and players 19-20 year-olds, who wanted to play on turf. “There’s been a push for a while to move to turf.” It’s Twentyman’s second season back at the club. In between, he played and captained with then Victorian Sub-district Cricket Association side Sunshine, He returned to Sydenham/ Hillside once he knew they would be making the move to turf cricket. “They committed 18 months ago, and I came back to help set it up,” Twentyman said. “I still had regular contact … I came back and managed to bring a couple of players with me.” The Storm started the season with a win in its only completed match, despite the rain-affected start to the season. On Saturday, they took on another VTCA newcomer Roxburgh Park on day one of their two-day match. Sydenham/Hillside batted first, making 248, with Dylan Knight top-scoring with 55. In reply, the Falcons were 1-5 off three overs. Sunday’s catch-up match from round one ended in a draw. Batting first, Sydenham/Hillside made 8-130, and Aberfeldie was 0-6 in reply when the rain set in. Twentyman said the north A1 competition would be interesting, with several new teams in the competition. “Sunshine I played at [in sub-district] and will be interesting They’re going to be pretty strong and the team to beat. “Roxburgh Park is another with sub-district experience. “Myself and a couple of other guys can, hopefully, impart our sub-district influence into the side.” He said the aim of this season was not to be pushed around. “I’ve got a personal drive and some KPIs I would like to reach,” Twentyman said. “I would love to play finals. I want to be as competitive as possible.” In other north A1 matches, Caroline Springs has already conceded first innings points to Sunshine YCW. Caroline Springs could only muster 90, before the YCW’s finished day one at 4-109. Caroline Springs’ captain Kane Sevior was the best for his side, making 36 and taking 2-24. Caroline Springs’ catch-up match on Sunday was also washed out. Dylan Knight top-scored for Sydenham/Hillside on Saturday, making 55. (Shawn Smits)

Bacchus Marsh’s second side had a one-shot win against Gisborne Yellow in division 2 in a top-of-the-table clash. Winning two rinks and sharing a third, Bacchus Marsh won 88 (15)-87 (3) and is now 10 points clear atop the ladder. In other division 2 matches, Diggers Rest defeated Kyneton Golf, while Mt Cottrell fell to Macedon. In division 3, Mt Cottrell lost to Lancefield, while Bacchus Marsh and Diggers Rest had to forfeit their matches against Trentham and Woodend respectively. Tara Murray

On the back of its most successful Riddell District Football Netball League season, Diggers Rest has reappointed all its football and netball coaches for next season. The Burras won seniors and reserves football premierships, led by Shaun Sims and Ant Power, respectively. Three of its four netball sides made finals, with A-graders, led by Amy Carroll, finishing sixth.

Netball

Cobras’ masters netball team has taken out a second straight title in Netball Victoria’s Super 7s competition. The side, primarily made up of women connected with Bacchus Marsh Netball Club, defeated Waaia, 28-27, in the women’s 30-plus social division.

Football

Matthew Duck has been appointed Western Region Football League’s new chief executive. Duck, who starts on December 12, replaces Bob Tregear, who will retire early next year. Duck is currently chief executive at Diving Victoria, and was previously general manager football operations for the Southern Football Netball League.

Cricket

Darley’s bowlers backed up the job done by its batsmen on day two of its Ballarat Cricket Association match against Ballarat-Redan. Having made 8-264 on day one of the match, the Lions bowled Ballarat-Redan for just 118 on Saturday. Wickets were shared around – all seven bowlers took at least one in a second straight Lions’ win.

Swimming

Amelia Villegas is the latest Melton Swimming club member to qualify for state championships. Villegas qualified for the 200-metre individual medley in her age group on the weekend. Melton swimmers competed in events on both Saturday and Sunday, at which they notched up a combined 115 personal best times and 17 top-three finishes.

VTCA

Melton Centrals was among the rare winners in Victorian Turf Cricket Association on Sunday. As rain halted games across the country, Centrals and County West played on in west A1. Centrals made 5-256, and a win was never in doubt as County West made 9-172. In its two-day game against Seabrook, Centrals will resume at 2-12, chasing 149. Melton South Primary School will resume at 0-4 against Grand United. They need 234 to win. Cobras’ coach named ‘best of the year’ by AFL Victoria The year of the Cobra continues, with Bacchus Marsh coach Travis Hodgson named AFL Victoria senior coach of the year. Hodgson, who was one of four finalists in the award, was named the Gerard Fitzgerald senior coach of the year at a ceremony in Melbourne on Friday night. After not making the grade for 15 years, playing finals again was a primary aim of the Cobras. Once there, they weren’t content with just making up the numbers … they ended the regular season in second spot then went on to play Sunbury Lions in the Ballarat Football League grand final. The Cobras put on a dominant display for the

last game of the year, winning 13.21 (99)-5.14 (44), and their first premiership in 39 years. Hodgson said the cup was icing on the cake of what had been a perfect year, with his nomination an honour in itself. “It was pretty humbling,” he said. “I didn’t expect it. It was great to be recognised as having a great year. “Once you get there on the night, you’ve got no influence on what transpires. You just enjoy it.” While Hodgson’s name is the one on the award, he said the club, as a whole, deserves it. “You put things in place, and you’re nothing if the players don’t deliver. It’s recognition for a lot of people who helped me and the club

together. Though it’s an individual award, there are people out of the club who get a lot out of it.” With preseason training just around the corner, the Cobras turn their focus to next season. They’ve managed to re-sign most of the playing group, but there are two big exclusions. Former AFL player Damian Cupido has moved to Bairnsdale, while former coach Cameron Richardson will play with Gordon in the Central Highlands Football League. “We knew this would be the case during the season, no matter the outcome,” Hodgson said. “Damian was always only going to play for one year.

“Cam was finding it difficult to get up each week, and we were managing him throughout the season. So he’s going back a level to play.” The Cobras still need a key forward to help replace Cupido and Richardson, and have added three other key signings. Former VFL player Scott Sherlock has signed, along with Ryley Stuhldreier and Dean Heta. Hodgson said, on paper, the side should be stronger next season. In other AFL Victoria awards, Outer North West NAB AFL Auskick region district manager Michelle Whitehand has won the 2016 NAB AFL Auskick Volunteer of the Year award. Tara Murray

Bulls’ six wins and a hat trick

Melton Lions celebrate the first of many wickets on Saturday; Hoppers’ Justin Goegan does not look pleased. (Shawn Smits)

Win lands in Lions’ laps By Tara Murray Having restricted Hoppers Crossing to 1-10 in its first 10 overs, Melton was happy with its start in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association east-west clash. No-one would have predicted what happened next … the Lions went on to destroy Hoppers Crossing’s batting line-up. “There was a late start and the pitch was a little damp … we won the toss,” Lions’ playing coach Nathan Geisler said. “They were 1-10 off 10 overs, and we thought they would put the foot down. “Before we knew it, they were five, then six and then seven wickets down. “The wickets kept falling, as they were batting for survival.” From being 1-10, Hoppers Crossing lost 9-9 off its next 11 overs to be all out for just 19. Geisler said it was a day where everything had gone Melton’s way. 50 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 15, 2016

We took our chances, and the nicks were going … - Nathan Geisler to the keeper

’’

“Sometimes you get on a roll, and other days all the nicks go through the gaps,” he said, “We took our chances, and the nicks were going through to the keeper. It helps when they go right to them.” Geisler took 5-5 off 5.5 overs, while Jake Charge took 4-3 off six overs. “I’ve struggled to take wickets this year, so it was good to get some,” Geisler said. “Jake played really well. I had a good chat to him during the week about the things he was doing last season, but wasn’t doing this season, and he responded. “The two opening bowlers [Ashley Sweet and Brad Jones] set the match up, keeping them to 1-10.

“Chargey and I are getting the pats on the back, but it was a team effort.” Geisler said he had faith his side wouldn’t also suffer a batting collapse. The Lions made their runs in the sixth over, finishing 0-20. “I don’t think any wicket is a 19-run wicket,” he said. “We would have been happy restricting them to 120-130. “We had to bat sensibly, and not give them an early wicket to get their confidence up. “None down was what we wanted.” The win is the Lions’ second so far, and puts the side back at 2-2 for the season, a much-needed confidence boost after a couple of down years. They now sit ninth on the ladder. “Our best is competitive with the best teams in the competition,” Geisler said. “Everyone but Altona and Balwyn has lost now. We need to make sure we are on our A game every week.” The Lions this week face Endeavour Hills in a two-day match.

It was a history-making day for Bacchus Marsh in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association on Saturday. For the first time, all six senior sides won matches on the same day. In the McIntyre Cup, the Bulls entered day two of its match against Sunbury with the match firmly in their control. The Bulls resumed at 2-59 chasing Sunbury’s 118. They made the runs with ease, clocking up 157. Peter Lalor was the best of the Bulls’ batsmen, making 39. Sunbury made 114 in its second innings. Jared Taylor made the most of his opportunity to get a second chance to bowl, taking 7-50. Skipper Rhys Watson claimed 3-30. The win puts the Bulls just 1.7 points behind top-placed Sunbury. In B-grade, the Bulls played out a thriller against St Anthonys. After starting well with the bat at 1-77, the Bulls collapsed to 9-175. This left them needing 10 runs with just one wicket in hand. The match winner for the Bulls was 16-year-old Liam Taylor, who batted through 76 overs, making 36 not-out. Taylor and Tom Cotton got the Bulls over the line. The Bulls finished on 9-190. The third and fourth XI’s both won matches against Diggers Rest, while Bradley Nichols provided a highlight in the G-grade competition. Nichols bowled just two overs, but it was all he needed as he took a hat trick in the Bulls’ win against Woodend. The sixth side defeated Gisborne. Tara Murray

ROD’S VERDICT Adequate in every respect, special in none.

thought Rod was hard on this car. The seats are extremely comfortable and the interior is pleasant. It’s a little noisier than some other cars and a bit sluggish off the mark and up long hills, but that’s nothing you can’t deal with. There is audible rear parking assist, but I wondered about paying for a centre dash screen when a reversing camera and navigation are optional (and the touch screen can be frustratingly difficult to use). The real world fuel economy is nothing brilliant going by our experience, otherwise there’s nothing to upset anyone here. Except for the spare wheel. It’s not just skinny and speed-limited to 80 km/h; you have to inflate it with the supplied compressor before you can use it. This is not something you would ever want to have to do, so keep your roadside assist paid up. You can access Pandora by pairing your phone with the car – a nice touch.

o far this year two-thirds of all Holdens have been imported from overseas and the Cruze, Holden’s third-biggest seller, is one of them. It comes from Daewoo in Korea and, while this helps keep prices down, the Cruze doesn’t have the same quality feel of, say, a Mazda 3 from Japan or even a Hyundai or Kia, also from Korea. If you can live with this and an engine that works hard for everything it achieves then the price is definitely right. The five-speed manual starts at $19,990, the auto is just $1000 more. The cheapest Mazda 3 auto is $26,000. It’s a bit slow off the mark but winds up OK and cruises comfortably at the legal limit with enough in reserve for overtaking. You feel the bumps and jumps in the road but the ride is acceptable. The handling can get a bit loose and vague when pushed but if you want to drive fast you won’t buy one of these. It’s a car for people who aren’t into cars, who just want to go from A to B.
