Ballan to get CFA centre A new CFA training centre will be built in the Ballan area after the state government announced it would support a parliamentary committee recommendation to purchase a new site in the town “as a matter of urgency”. The government tabled its final response to the committee’s report on the CFA training facility that found chemical contamination at the site was likely to have caused cancer and other illnesses in firefighters. One of the recommendations urges the government to purchase a new site in Ballan, which would be managed by the CFA with the Emergency Management Victoria Inspectorate managing the occupational health and safety compliance. The government announced its support for the recommendation but would not provide details about when the site would be purchased. The CFA ‘Memorial Wall’, which was at the Fiskville site, will be relocated to a “suitable and easily accessible location” following consultation with CFA members. Firefighters and nearby residents exposed to chemicals at the Fiskville site could be compensated under a dedicated redress scheme. While the state government announced it would support in principle the parliamentary committee’s recommendation, it says it will consider the “many complex issues” associated with a redress scheme, including funding arrangements. The response document states: “The issues examined will include eligibility

issues that face redress schemes; how any redress scheme would interact with other schemes and legal rights; the form, administration and duration of redress schemes; and resourcing.” The state government said it supported in full, in principle, or in part all 31 of the inquiry’s recommendations, including: • Making potable water standard for firefighter training;

‘‘

It has been a long and hard battle to get - Mick Tisbury justice

’’

• EPA Victoria conducting regular testing of fire fighting training facilities; and • Health monitoring for firefighters. Emergency Services Minister James Merlino said the inspector-general of Emergency Management Victoria would report back to the government within 18 months of the implementations. “The Fiskville inquiry has been difficult for all involved and I sincerely thank the firefighters, their families and the community for sharing their stories.” Senior firefighter and Fiskville campaigner Mick Tisbury said the hundreds of firefighters who were “poisoned” at the site were finally getting justice. “Since I first raised concerns about the safety of the CFA training facility at Fiskville in June, 2012, it has been a long and hard battle to get justice for the victims,” Mr Tisbury said.

Tanya junks fast food Tanya O’Neill sank pretty low 18 months ago. She wasn’t feeling well and she knew it was because of her weight and diet. The Melton woman weighed 110 kilograms and was living off processed and junk foods, and alcohol. So she decided to do something about it. “I was feeling quite low so I decided to focus on my health to lift my mood more than anything,” Ms O’Neill, 47, says. “I didn’t want to go on medication, and it basically skyrocketed from there.” She now weighs 60 kilograms, trains two hours a day and has entered several fitness competitions. She says she wants to motivate others to improve their health. She doesn’t follow a diet but stays away from packaged foods and says: “If there’s anything on a packet you can’t pronounce, don’t buy it”. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Melton’s kids not playing ball By Sumeyya Ilanbey Melton has one of the lowest rates of sports participation among young Victorian children, a new study has revealed. Only 10 per cent of children under 14 were enrolled in a sports club last year, compared with sports-mad regional and rural areas where up to 45 per cent of children had joined clubs. The research, conducted by Victoria University, VicHealth, Sport and Recreation Victoria and Federation University, examined almost 900,000 registrations in football, basketball, bowls, cricket, golf, gymnastics, hockey, netball, soccer, sailing and tennis. Greater Dandenong ranked bottom of all

local government areas at 7.1 per cent, while almost 20 per cent of Moorabool youngsters played sport last year, the research reveals. Victoria University’s Rochelle Eime said poor planning and a lack of facilities in urban growth areas were contributing to the low participation rates. “It’s important that planners consider sport and recreation needs of these growth areas before developers start dividing up house and land packages,” Associate Professor Eime said. A spokesman for Sports Minister John Eren said the state government invested heavily in sports clubs across the state, including the $26 million Supporting Victorian Sport and

Recreation Program, $100 million Community Sports Infrastructure Fund and $4.6 million Sporting Club Grants Program. He said the government wanted to hear from Melton council about future sports projects that needed funding and other opportunities that could increase participation. “To help Victorians be as healthy as they can be, we are getting on with opening more doors for people to get involved in grassroots sport and recreation,” he said. “Boosting participation among girls has been a particular focus, but we also believe that all players deserve equal access to equal facilities.” The research also found only 10.5 per cent of Victorian women and girls were involved in

sports, compared with 20 of men and boys. The gap blew out for children aged five to 14, with 80 per cent of boys involved in sport, compared with 50 per cent of girls. Melton council recreation and youth acting manager Glenn Mulcahy said sports involvement was “crucial” in improving children’s physical, mental, social and emotional health and wellbeing. “Learning to work as a team, deal with losing, being a good sport … and operating in fun and at time pressure environments are great lifelong learning experiences,” Mr Mulcahy said. He encouraged anyone interested in taking part in council-run sports clubs to call 9747 7200.

Poppy’s mum takes the lead

Storm takes a life to the brink

Poppy was doing it ruff when Karen Brewer adopted her more than two years ago. The boxer staffy had the ball of her hip removed and was limping. Eventually, she’ll need a hip replacement, but Ms Brewer says that thanks to daily exercises, Poppy’s leg is getting stronger. Ms Brewer wants to take Poppy to an off-leash dog park and get her moving, but the closest dog park to Diggers Rest, where Ms Brewer lives, is 15 kilometres away in Hillside. She is lobbying Melton council to build a dedicated dog park in Diggers Rest and says many residents are keen on the idea. “Lots more people have animals and they walk them every night,” Ms Brewer said. “The community here seems to be either young families who take their kids and dogs to the park or older people, like myself, who like getting out and getting a bit of exercise.” Melton council corporate services general manager Maurie Heaney said that while council hadn’t been exploring the idea for a dog park in Diggers Rest, it would be reviewing the master plan for Diggers Rest Recreation Reserve during the current financial year. “It is difficult to estimate the exact cost of the park,” he said. “However the base cost to develop an adequate dog park in an open space area would be in the vicinity of $35,000 to $60,000, [and] an ongoing program for management and maintenance of the area.” There are two off-leash dog parks in the municipality – at Boronia Drive, Hillside, and Navan Park, Melton West.

Manaia McElhaney stopped breathing twice on Monday last week. The Melton South man was among 8500 Victorians treated for “thunderstorm asthma”. About 2pm, as temperatures soared into the high 30s, Mr McElhaney started feeling a bit “wheezy” and decided to go to his GP. “He prescribed me some pills to clear the airways,” he said. “Then I got home and found I couldn’t breathe. My cousin had to call the ambulance for me. “As soon as they arrived they gave me adrenaline shots and chucked me on to the nebuliser,” Mr McElhaney said. “I was really scared, didn’t know what was going to happen.” As his ambulance raced towards Western Health in Footscray, Mr McElhaney’s heart rate dropped below 30 beats a minute, far beneath the normal 90-beats-a-minute resting rate for most adults. “I felt I was drowning,” he said. As paramedics gave him extra adrenaline shots to keep his heart beating, the frightened young man blacked out, only to be revived in intensive care. Health Minister Jill Hennessy, who has commissioned the inspector-general for emergency management to review the emergency response, said that while the thunderstorm asthma event could not have been predicted, work was under way to create new models to anticipate the effect of extreme weather on health.

Own water vital to plans Melton and Moorabool residents are being advised to have an independent water supply close at hand if they plan to stay and defend their homes this fire season. Western Water managing director Neil Brennan is warning residents it is vital they be prepared in an emergency. “If electricity is cut or water infrastructure is affected by fire, pumps and other equipment may fail, cutting the mains water supply,” Mr Brennan said. “If there is extremely high demand for water … during a fire, water pressure may also drop.” Mr Brennan said residents should consult their local CFA about their options for independent water supplies.

And plan ahead, he stressed. “We are already doing all we can to prepare for summer, with back-up generators ready and water storage tanks at high capacity to cope in case of fire,” he said. Residents can also help their communities be prepared for fire season by ‘adopting’ a fire hydrant. “Please keep any fire hydrants near your home free of debris and vegetation, and if you think a hydrant needs maintenance, call Western Water to report it,” Mr Brennan said. Police have been unable to find the relatives of a 71-year-old man found dead at his Melton South home two months ago. Police say they’ve made inquiries interstate and overseas to find Alfred Leather’s next of kin after he died of natural causes at his Coburns Road home on September 18. Alfred was married twice – once in South Australia and then in Darwin – and had two children. It’s believed his daughter is living in South Australia, and his son, who may be a pilot, is in London. Alfred changed his surname from Harm to Leather many years ago.

Hoax accused an aspiring pilot A Rockbank teenager charged with making hoax calls to aircraft attempting to land at Melbourne Airport was an aspiring pilot, who had worked for Virgin Australia at Tullamarine before being sacked in September. Paul Sant, 19, was charged last Tuesday with five federal offences relating to 16 unauthorised radio transmissions made between September 5 and November 3. He faces four charges of endangering aircraft safety and one count of interference likely to endanger safety or cause loss or damage. Mr Sant allegedly tapped into an air traffic control frequency and communicated directly with pilots and air control towers. One of his transmissions allegedly forced a Virgin pilot to abort the landing of a plane. Mr Sant regularly posted about his love of aviation on social media and, on August 23, he posted a photo on Facebook that pictured him while working for Virgin Australia. He also posted a video, which he purports to have taken while he was in the cockpit, as a Virgin Embraer 190 took off from Canberra en route to Melbourne. Family members posted on Facebook about Mr Sant’s hopes of becoming a pilot. His lawyer Pern Chaya told the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Tuesday that her client had been diagnosed with autism and depression, but was not on any medication. “He’s 19, so he’s a young prisoner,” Ms Chaya said, pointing out it was his first time in

custody. Mr Sant was remanded until yesterday (Monday), and was expected to apply for bail. Australian Federal Police’s head of crime operations, acting Assistant Commissioner Chris Sheehan, said airline security measures are “robust”. “The travelling public should be reassured we are treating this matter appropriately,” he said.

‘‘

Airservices has appropriate … systems in place

’’

- Steven Clarke

Airservices Australia operations manager Steven Clarke said there was no threat to the travelling public as a result of the alleged transmissions. “Airservices has appropriate procedures, processes and systems in place to ensure the safety of aviation operations at Melbourne and Avalon airports, ” Mr Clarke said. Mr Sant lives in Rockbank but it is unclear where the offences are alleged to have occurred. It is understood Mr Sant was employed as a member of Virgin Australia’s ground crew for about 12 months until his employment was terminated in September. It is unclear why he was sacked. A Virgin Australia spokeswoman said the airline was pleased the federal police had charged someone in relation to the hoaxes, but would not comment further.

Help keep kids moving Buy a Christmas tree next month and help keep local kids with a disability dancing and camping. That’s the message from Caroline Springs Rotary’s Wendy Gadsby, with the new group hoping to raise more than $7000 through the sale of Christmas trees. With less than a month before Santa arrives, it’s the perfect time to grab a tree, with every cent going back to two key community projects – a dance program for children with a disability, called Busy Feet, and Camp Getaway for the Melton Specialist School. “Last year, we sold 35 trees, not bad since we only chartered, or became official, in August 2015 – and we really were just starting to get

into the swing of things by Christmas,” Ms Gadsby said. “This year we’d love to triple that, if we can. Last year, funds raised went towards two of our club projects. “[Camp Getaway’s] a free camp to these children, many of whom had never been away from family or home, and it’s a respite for a few days for their families.” The trees will be available for delivery every weekend in December leading up to Christmas. “The earlier you book in, the better your chance of early delivery,” Ms Gadsby said. The Kurunjang Secondary College students came ninth at the Chess Kids state tournament earlier this month, and are headed to the national finals this week. The school’s chess club has been running for the past four years, and it’s the first time the team has qualified to compete in the national tournament. Secondary school nurse and chess club leader Nathanael Poljak says the students are very

excited about where their talents are heading. “It’s all about having a sense of belonging and inclusion for the kids,” Mr Poljak says. “The school has sports clubs, but it’s important that students who aren’t into sports can hang out at lunchtime, do something they’re interested in and meet new friends.” He says the secret to being a good chess player is staying focused, paying attention and being patient. Council has a light bulb moment By Sumeyya Ilanbey Melton council wants to improve street lighting around dark and desolate parks to boost public safety in the city. Cambridge ward councillor Kathy Majdlik asked officers at last week’s meeting to provide a report examining usage and safety at city parks, the standard of lighting installed at each, and the impact, both financially and on neighbourhood amenity, of increasing lighting in parks found to be deficient. Cr Majdlik said residents are concerned about particular parks where there isn’t any

lighting, with darkness thought to increase criminal activity in these areas. A report showing how council allocates funding for street lights for parks and the options for increasing the numbers of lights will answer many residents’ questions, Cr Majdlik said. “I don’t know if [extra lighting] is going to stop negative behaviour, or if that group of people are going to simply move elsewhere, but it’s something I told my residents I would bring to the attention of councillors,” she said. “It’d be up to the council of the day whether lighting at parks is a priority … or whether

reducing criminal activity just comes down to police numbers. “With this report, at least we can have a reference point – if there is a particular park that is of concern, we can investigate whether street lighting will alleviate that concern.” Cr Majdlik said street lighting in dark places will improve people’s confidence in their parks and help residents feel safe walking around their neighbourhoods at night. Detective Sergeant Bob Henley, of the Melton Crime Investigation Unit, said increased lighting at parks could deter criminal activity. “Anywhere that’s more visible and lit –

people are going to feel a lot safer in those areas,” Detective Sergeant Henley said. “It’s always good to have lights at parks – there’s just not the police safety side of things, but I would say it opens those parks for use at different hours. There are less trip hazards and people stumbling in parks. “Anecdotally, there’s less criminal activity at lit places – the thing about committing offences is you don’t want to be caught. Offenders feel generally more confident in carrying out crimes if there’s less chance of detection.” Cr Majdlik’s motion was passed unanimously.

Unite to end violence Melton men, women and children last week took oaths to stand up, speak out and help put an end to domestic violence. As part of White Ribbon Day events, Djerriwarrh Health Services and Melton council hosted a breakfast at Melton train station last Wednesday. The station kiosk provided coffees during the morning, with cups bearing the message, “It’s just a joke: No. It’s not. How we speak about women affects how people see and treat them.” A Djerriwarrh Health Services spokeswoman said the organisation was committed to being a community leader in the prevention of violence against women. “We believe that violence against women is best prevented by ensuring that respectful attitudes, behaviours and beliefs are shaped in the places where we live, work and study,” she said.

Melton mayor Sophie Ramsey said putting an end to domestic violence started with challenging gender inequality and building greater respect between men and women. Cr Ramsey encouraged residents to take part in the United Nation’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign, which started on November 25. Sumeyya Ilanbey

Fire treatment in western parks By Charlene Macaulay The warmer weather is on its way and with it comes the threat of grass fires and bushfires. Parks Victoria is rising to the challenge with its annual fuel reduction program to reduce the risk of fire across 12 parks in the west, including Organ Pipes National Park, Point Cook Coastal Park, Maribyrnong Valley Parklands and Kororoit Creek Streamside Reserve. Staff will be slashing grass, removing weeds at the sites and maintaining fire access tracks and fuel breaks – gaps in vegetation that help

stop or control the spread of fire. Several planned burn-offs are also on the cards. Parks Victoria fire and emergency operations senior manager Anthony Maxwell said the fuel reduction program was essential to help protect communities living close to grasslands and forested parks. “Fire can spread quickly,” Mr Maxwell said. “Our work to reduce fuel loads is an important part of managing the landscape in urban areas. “Reducing fuel will not by itself stop a major bushfire, but it is crucial to ensure the safest

possible access for firefighters and to provide a vital fuel buffer to nearby homes. “Bushfires and grass fires can move rapidly and generate a large amount of heat.” Mr Maxwell called on residents to do their bit by keeping grass short on their properties, clearing gutters, pruning shrubs and trees, and removing rubbish from around their homes. For a full list of the fire prevention works sites, go to bit.ly/2g9syVc Parks Victoria staff maintain fire access tracks. (Parks Victoria)

Bacchus Marsh artists go public Bacchus Marsh art lovers are being invited to admire the work of local artists at the town’s only public gallery. Dozens of artworks – ranging from paintings to sculptures – are on show at The Village Bacchus Marsh shopping centre, thanks to the hard work of the Bacchus Marsh Arts Council. Council secretary John Spain said many local artists approached him about showcasing their work to the community in a public space. “We were over the moon when The Village Bacchus Marsh said they’d love to help us,” he said. “All of a sudden you’ve got a gallery in Bacchus Marsh that is in a public space and easily accessible by everyone.” Details: email secretary@bmaci.org.au Sumeyya Ilanbey

By Sumeyya Ilanbey A long-term strategy for the creation of jobs in emerging industries in Melbourne’s west has been launched. The state government last Friday announced $80,000 to fund a strategy driven by the Melbourne’s West – Future Workforce report. Industry and Employment Minister Wade Noonan said a new regional taskforce, including members from West of Melbourne Economic Development Alliance, Western Melbourne Regional Development Australia, Victoria University and local councils, had been formed to spearhead the strategy. “The west is going from strength to strength, but we need a long-term plan for boosting jobs and capitalising on growth,” he said. “Job creation does not happen by accident.” The report says local employers need more workers with higher numeracy and literacy, as well as greater customer service, science, technology, engineering and maths skills. Meanwhile, a Brotherhood of St Laurence research report revealed a dearth of public transport options, and poor connections between neighbouring suburbs, was as a key reason for young people in Melton being unable to find jobs. The analysis revealed transport problems are a barrier to work for a larger proportion of unemployed young people (25.1 per cent)

(Supplied)

Jobs creation push for west than of 25-54 year olds (14.8 per cent) or the 55-plus group (eight per cent). The research also found 61 per cent of unemployed young people didn’t have drivers licences, compared with 20 per cent of 25-54 year olds and one per cent of those over 55.

Young people living in the outer suburbs, or regional and rural areas, are particularly disadvantaged as public transport options are limited and transport connectivity is poor, according to Brotherhood of St Laurence’s Farah Farouque. “To create opportunities for young people, we need to have the means for them to access these opportunities,” she said. “Transport is very critical to dealing with problems of youth unemployment. “[It’s] not one of those issues that could be solved overnight. “We need to consider the public transport options and that’s gone a bit under the radar.” A recent Australia’s Youth Unemployment Hotspots: Snapshot revealed youth unemployment in parts of Melton was as high as 17.3 per cent.

Cops get points in the paint Melton young people and police were shooting hoops and breaking down barriers at a tournament earlier this month. Students from across the municipality and officers enjoyed the Police Basketball Shield Tournament at Melton Secondary College on November 18. College multicultural aide Robert Aduer said the day was an opportunity for young people and Victoria Police to bond.

Mr Aduer said students were hoping another sports tournament can be organised. “The primary focus was to promote and break down common barriers among youth with law enforcement,” he said. “It was a chance to foster a great [relationship] … students from different backgrounds interacted positively.” Sumeyya Ilanbey

“Happy first birthday to us,” sings James. “From the first to the third of December, we’ll be partying here at Caroline Springs Mazda, with sales and special offers up for grabs over the three days.” In one year, the dealership has sold more than 1000 cars and won awards for its exceptional service and client commitment. “We received recognition for ‘best Mazda customer service dealer’ of any service department as we always ensure our customers leave with smooth-running cars,” James adds. As well as selling and servicing cars for local councils, schools, churches and sports clubs, the dealership insists on using local suppliers and contractors. It also supports the local community whenever possible and employs staff from the area. James says their success is due mainly to word-

“Most of my staff live in the area and have enjoyed bringing their friends and family into the dealership. All staff live in Brimbank or Melton and surrounds, but come from diverse backgrounds including Indian, Vietnamese, Italian, Greek, Serbian, Croatian, Sri Lankan and Filipino.”

New-look team sets its agenda With five new faces and four returnees, Melton councillors are ready to get to work. They talk to Sumeyya Ilanbey. COBURN WARD Sophie Ramsey (mayor) Age: 52 Suburb: Melton

Why did you put your hand up for the job? I’ve been on council for the past 15 years for one overriding reason, because I love representing this beautiful community and believe that Melton’s community is its greatest asset. Serving this community is a very humbling experience. What skills do you bring to this council? I’ve lived in the city of Melton for more than 30 years, so I understand the issues that are close to the hearts of residents. My aim as mayor is to be a strong voice on council for all the community, especially our disabled, disengaged and elderly, for both those who have lived here for a long time and those who are new to the area. What are the three most pressing issues facing your ward? The most pressing issues facing Coburn ward are ensuring quality council services are maintained, sporting grounds and facilities are upgraded, and a suitable site for a new cemetery is found. My wish is for council to identify a new site for a new basketball stadium and a performing arts centre for the city.

Why did you put your hand up for the job? Being a returning councillor, I feel there is a lot of unfinished business, which I would like to help deliver. What skills do you bring to this council? My genuine feel for my community. Also the skills I have learnt during the past eight years allow me to help residents navigate the system. What are the three most pressing issues facing your ward? • Improved medical facilities, including day hospital services. • Police numbers and community safety concerns. • Transport, rail and road upgrades, including improved bus interchanges.

MELISSA DE SANTIS

Melissa De Santis Age: 40 Suburb: Melton

Why did you put your hand up for the job? I wanted to make Melton a better place for its families to live in. I wanted to see an improvement in public transportation, especially the electrification of our rail service. I was also concerned that council needed to be more proactive in creating more local jobs and attracting industry to our city. I would like to see the Victoria University campus fully restored, providing both TAFE and tertiary courses. Youth homelessness and family violence are two of my other key interests, which I hope through council can be better addressed.

What skills do you bring to this council? I hold a Bachelor of Community Development and have also been involved in state government administration, and will use these skills to benefit the Melton community. What are the three most pressing issues facing your ward? • For council to play a leading role in job creation, especially for our youth. • To advocate on behalf of our community in the area of tertiary education. • To improve roads infrastructure, such as the duplication of the Melton Highway and an upgrade of the Western Highway between Melton and Deer Park.

MY PLACE Following years of community work, Thomas Woof was named Melton’s young citizen of the year earlier this year. The 22-year-old speaks with Sumeyya Ilanbey.

I was born and bred here – in the same place in Melton West, for the past 22 years. And I also do a lot of volunteer work in the community. When I was younger, I was also involved in helping build the playground at Navan Park. What’s your favourite thing about living in Melton? Probably the different types of community groups and events there are. My favourite even is the Djerriwarrh Festival … I also really enjoy getting involved in tree planting days, Clean Up Australia Day. What would you change about the area if you could? I reckon we need more things to do for young people. I know council offers things to do on the weekend, but we need something to keep young people busy during the week as well. I work on weekends and there’s nothing to do during the week. Maybe have a social group where we can do things, go out and get involved in activities. And there’s a lack of public transport. Where’s your favourite place to hang out in Melton? I like going to the Melton Youth Services and Woodgrove Shopping Centre. The things I

like about the youth services are the programs they offer and I get involved with – it keeps me occupied. And then with Woodgrove, it lets me get out of the house and just hang out. What community work have you been involved in? I’m currently involved in the youth council. I’ve also been involved with lots of community days and with the local church. I really like doing different things in the City of Melton. You were recently named Melton’s young citizen of the year – how does that accolade make you feel? I won the award for the hard work I do with the youth council. I’ve done it for so long, nearly 10 years, so it’s nice to be recognised for my hard work. Everyone who had known me for a long time was proud of me – they all know what I’ve overcome with my disabilities, so it was a good feeling to be named young citizen of the year. You’re a young person so you’re aware of the challenges young people face. What needs to be done to engage Melton youth? Council needs to promote and talk to them about what things they do. This way, young people can inspire others in the community and if they have any issues they can speak out and council can try and resolve them.

This unit shares a block with only one other, and has great investment potential. The good-sized block of 300 square metres offers scope for well-hatched plans, or leave it as is, it’s working. With good tenants in place returning $230 per week, the lease ends in September next year, so there’s time to plan. The property is in a good spot, near a reserve and also close to public transport. The unit has two bedrooms, which share a bathroom. The family-meals area is a good size, floating floorboards keep maintenance down, and there’s a cooling unit. There is also a single garage, a stretch of lawn out front and a paved garden area in the rear courtyard.

Well located and with a fully concreted courtyard out the back, this unit comes with an appealing price tag, making it an ideal investment. Within walking distance of the Melton train station and Station Square shopping centre, the unit has two bedrooms, which share access to the two-way main bathroom. The neat kitchen has stainless-steel appliances including a dishwasher. Features include ducted heating, split-system, solar panels and a single garage.

Property of the week

MELTON SOUTH 7 Blaxland Road, 3338 Sweeney Melton: 8746 2055

Price: $339,000 – $369,000

This great house – for family or investor – has a tastefully revamped look inside and is in a cracker of a location. It’s within a five-minute walk of the train station, St Anthony’s and Melton South primary schools, Staughton College, and a new shopping centre, anchored by Coles, due to open next year. The house’s four bedrooms range along the entry hall and another hallway down the side. Each has grey carpet, built-in robes, ceiling fan, TV connection and timber blinds – the latter on windows throughout.

The sleek en suite, fully tiled in latte porcelain, has a contemporary vanity unit and a walk-in shower with rain head. The main bathroom, similarly decorated, has an enclosed “Jetson’s” shower (over the tub) that sports lights, sound and foot and back massage jets. Three separate living zones include a laminate-floored lounge room, accessed through the original amber-glassed slider from the small entry hall; a porcelain-tiled meals area; and a large, laminate-floored rumpus room.

The completely refreshed kitchen has storage aplenty, an island bench topped with stone-look laminate, large-format splashback tiles in glossy sandstone, a corner pantry, dishwasher, under-bench oven and gas cooktop with the Ole label. Views from the sink are of the outdoor entertainment area. Accessible from meals and rumpus rooms, a gabled pergola above concrete is beautified with a classy water feature and raised gardens with bird of paradise plants in riverstones.

This area links with a Colorbond workshop with power and concrete floor. It would make a great man-cave or spillover space when entertaining. The very pretty backyard takes advantage of the neighbouring canopy and has a large lawn area and garden beds. Ducted cooling, alarm, LED downlights practically throughout and a block of 600 square metres are further drawcards. Carole Levy 23 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 29, 2016

SPORT New club puts hockey on western front The lack of hockey clubs in Melbourne’s west has driven the formation of a new club at Caroline Springs. Hockey Club launched two weeks ago after months of behind the scenes work, and already reactions have been positive. Club secretary Jessica Spence said the formation of the club would make it easier for people in the west to take up the game. She said they had been looking to bridge the gap between existing teams at Melton, Werribee, Footscray and Hobsons Bay. “If you look at the western suburbs, there’s no hockey club in Brimbank [or the eastern corridor of Melton],” she said. “You’re travelling half-hour on average to travel from one club to another. In the eastern suburbs, you would have gone past six clubs in

that time. Some clubs in the east have enough teams to cover all the teams in the west.” Spence said the club already had at least 30 members and enough players for two women’s teams, a men’s team and an under-10 side, and there could be more depending on numbers. They are also wanting a program for children who are too young to play in team competition. She said now the club is official, more people will show interest and get involved. Junior development and forming the club from the bottom up was the focus of the club’s four-year plan. “The junior section of the club is the main focus,” Spence said. “Of course, we would like to play at the highest level possible at seniors, but we want to get it right from the start.”

Spence said discussions are ongoing about possible locations to play games, the level of competition they play will depend on players they attract. “We’re looking at starting at pennant section, but are still in discussions with Hockey Victoria,” she said. “We can now start the negotiation process about where we play.” Among the moves they are contemplating in the longer term is a local competition. Spence said Hockey Victoria is considering competitions that would run in the same location each week. That could be an individual competition or a couple of hockey associations joining together. Reigning Ballarat Football League premiers Bacchus Marsh will welcome the return of five former players. The club announced Brenton Payne, Dillon Vojo-Rainbow, Jacob Wheelahan and Daniel Foley will call the Cobras home while aspiring to play in the VFL. Payne and Vojo-Rainbow return to the club after being on AFL lists with St Kilda and Carlton respectively. Cobras’ coach Travis Hodgson said any games the four played for the Cobras would be a bonus. Former junior Ryley Stuhldreier will also return, taking up a full time role after two years with South Barwon. The club has also announced the re-signing of all but two of this year’s premiership side. Cameron Richardson and Damian Cupido will play elsewhere.

Ballarat CA

Darley suffered its first loss of the season against Mt Clear in the Ballarat Cricket Association. Needing 215 for the win the Lions batsmen struggled to get going and were bowled out for 147. Lions’ skipper Heath Pritchard, who retired hurt late on day one of the match, returned to the crease and top scored for his side with 43.

Bowls

The Avenue finally opened its account in the Ballarat District Bowls Division’s division 1. After a couple of close calls, the Avenue took home the points against Midlands Golf, winning 99 (14)-84 (4). Bill Hawken’s rink had an 18-shot win, while Ben Gould’s rink won by three shots.

Bowls

Bacchus Marsh suffered a 20-shot loss to Kyneton Golf in Central Highlands Bowls Division’s division 1. Looking to cement its spot in the top four, Bacchus Marsh were able to win two of the four rinks, but with two rinks losing by a combined 31 shots, went down 107 (14)-87 (4). Bacchus Marsh slipped to fourth on the ladder.

Swimming

Jack Lalor has returned to Victorian Country representative duties. (Shawn Smits)

Jack’s back for the Vics By Tara Murray Having represented Victoria Country at the under-13 national cricket championships, Bacchus Marsh’s Jack Lalor has had to wait a while to get a second crack. The now 17-year-old will get his second chance to represent Victoria Country, this time at the under-19 national championships starting this week in Adelaide. Lalor is thrilled about getting another opportunity to represent his state at a national level. He said his return to the representative side coincided with a fortuitous growth spurt. “I reckon I’ve grown a bit,” he said. “I was a late grower.” He said that until recently, most of the opponents he was facing were bigger and he couldn’t hit the ball as hard. “Now I’ve caught up, I’m performing better with the bat and the ball,” he said. 52 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 29, 2016

He said he was expecting to bat at No.6, while doing some bowling when required. Lalor will be joined in the side by some familiar faces, as he is one of five Central Highlands cricketers selected. The others are Blake Thomson, Matthew Underwood, Tom Rogers and Matthew Milne. All five were part of the Central Highlands team that finished runner-up at the under-18 state championships earlier this year. Lalor was last week named in the Central Highlands team to compete at the state championships in January. “I’ve played with them since I was 14,” he said. “It’s awesome. Everyone knows each others’ game and you have that trust on and off the field.” Lalor has just started his second season playing with Victorian Premier Cricket side Northcote, having made the move from playing with Bacchus Marsh in the Gisborne and

District Cricket Association. He started with the Bulls in under-10s before working his way up to play in the first XI at the age of 15, playing along side his dad, Peter. The extra training load and playing against the best players in the state at premier level is something in which Lalor is revelling. “I’m a bit more of a batsman at Northcote,” he said. “It’s been good and the training has been a lot more intense. If you want to be a better player, you need to take that step. “This season, I started in the ones before I hurt my ankle. It was pretty surreal to play against state players like Travis Dean and Ian Holland. I aspire to be like them.” Lalor said that in the longer term, he would love to play cricket for a living, but for now he would be focusing on performing at the national championships. “To play well there is the first step and then I’ll set goals following that,” he said.

Melton Swimming Club will have 26 swimmers competing at the 2017 Victorian age championships next weekend. The swimmers all reached the qualifying times needed to compete at the championships, and will swim in a combined 123 events.

GDCA

Diggers Rest Bulla did the job on Saturday in its Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup match against Bacchus Marsh. Having struggled with the bat on day one, the Burras needed quick wickets on day two. The Bulls resumed at 1-20, but with only one batsmen scoring more than 13, they were bowled out for 116. Darren Quarrell was the pick of the bowlers, taking 6-38. In B grade, the Bulls smashed East Sunbury, while St Anthonys lost a thriller to Sunbury United. The Bulls’ five other sides all recorded wins. FOR MORE SPORT, VISIT Web: starweekly.com.au Melton & Moorabool Star Weekly @starweeklysport @star_weekly

Having already secured first innings points on day one of the east-west match against Endeavour Hills, the Lions were keen to get the maximum 10 points on Saturday. Lions captain David Kirk said his side, resuming at 3-94, was always going to take an aggressive approach to day two. “We wanted to bat for 10 to 15 overs and hopefully get a lead of about 80 to 90,” he said. “We wanted to get them back in batting while there was still a little in the pitch.”

The Lions declared at 4-180 with a lead of 86 on the first innings. Kirk led the way with an unbeaten 69. The task for the Lions was never going to be an easy one, as they were missing two of their key bowlers – playing coach Nathan Geisler and Brad Jones, who took 8-29 on day one but unavailable for day two. It didn’t seem to matter, with the other Lions bowlers stepping up to bowl Endeavour Hills out for 113. Endeavour Hills were in trouble at 3-10 and never recovered. Ashley Sweet was the standout for the Lions, taking 7-36.

“Sweety stepped up and bowled 18 overs straight,” Kirk said. “He was a class above everyone else on Saturday. We struggled to take wickets early in the season, but have taken 30 wickets in the last two matches. All the bowlers have stepped up.” The Lions were left a target of 27 runs in their second innings to seal an outright win. With the win all but certain, the Lions changed the batting order around. “We decided to let a couple of boys who hadn’t had a bat open up the innings,” Kirk said. “Ben Luca, who made 14 not out, batted well and got us over the line.”

The win moves the Lions to fourth on the ladder with two games left before Christmas. The Lions’ three wins are more than they had for all of last season. With the Lions having dominated with the ball in recent weeks, Kirk said they were looking forward to opportunities to spend plenty of time in the middle with the bat. “The next two games before Christmas are really important. Getting back to the 80-over matches gives you a good chance to get a bat,” he said. Tara Murray

Westie soars where Eagles dare By Lance Jenkinson Daniel Venables and his family were set for his selection by an interstate club in Friday night’s AFL national draft. So when Venables landed a spot at West Coast Eagles, based on the other side of the country from his Taylors Lakes home, a well-oiled machine got his bags packed, a meet-and-greet was held for adoring friends and family, before the lad was checked onto his Sunday flight. This week, the western suburbs’ best young footballer will start on the road to becoming a full-time professional. “It will be a little bit challenging,” Venables said of his interstate move. “But we’ve prepared ourselves for a while for this to happen.” Venables was inundated with phone calls and texts from the moment he was selected by West Coast as a first-round pick in the draft. The 18-year-old did his utmost to get back to all his well-wishers, but the turnaround between the draft and his relocation was short. What Venables will never forget is the support over the long-term of his family, friends, teammates and coaches, particularly the impact of junior club Keilor, TAC Cup side Western Jets and the teachers and students at Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School. “The phone has been going crazy, but I love it,” he said. “I’ve met so many people over the journey, so they’re excited for me. “Through Keilor, PEGS and Western Jets, I’ve had so much support. It’s been a bit overwhelming … so I guess I’m glad it’s finally paid off, and I can’t wait to get around everyone and just thank them.” Venables is no Johnny-come-lately to the AFL scene. Football ran in the family from the moment his great grandfather Johnny Lewis captain-coached North Melbourne and pulled on the Big V. His granddad Fred Robinson played for North Melbourne, while his dad Peter was once on Collingwood’s under-19 list. Getting drafted to the AFL is what Venables has wanted for as long as he can remember. “I’ve been waiting for so long for that day to happen, and it finally happened,” he said of the wait, still nursing a foot injury from the latter half of the season. “I’m just keen to get into it.” Even though Venables has planned for this day and dreamed about the moment he may be drafted, it took a while for it to sink in on the night. “I was in shock to be honest,” he said. “I couldn’t really do anything, it was all out of my control, so it was pretty nerve wracking. “I’m glad it’s over, and I’m happy that I’ve gone to the Eagles. I didn’t expect to be going there, but I’m so glad they called my name out because they’re a fantastic club. “To be able to learn off the likes of Sam Mitchell, Matt Priddis and Luke Shuey in the midfield, not many 18 year olds get the opportunity to do that.” Venables spoke to West Coast’s recruiters three times, but they never let the cat out of the bag that his name was so high on their list. He had an inkling that he might be heading interstate, but thought the Brisbane Lions were showing the most interest. The mystery surrounding his selection just

‘Bull at a gate’ impresses all

made the night all the more special. “I didn’t know I was going there, so when my name got called out, it was crazy,” Venables said. Venables’ playing style has often been compared to West Coast forward/midfielder Luke Shuey. The Vic Metro representative has admired from afar the way Shuey goes about his football. Lo and behold, Venables will live with Shuey in his first week at the club. Excited about that possibility, Venables will also get the chance to catch up with former Western Jets’ midfielder Liam Duggan, a first-round draft selection two years ago. “I’ve met ‘Duggo’ before and he’s an awesome guy,” Venables said. “He’s messaged me already,

so I’m pretty keen to get stuck into it and meet all of the boys.” Being West Coast’s first draft choice, there will be plenty expected of Venables in the west, but he won’t get caught up in external noise. “It would, obviously, be a dream to play my first game, but I’m not putting any pressure on myself,” he said. “The club has said they’re not putting any pressure on me, they just want me to take my time and do everything I can to get back [to 100 per cent fitness]. “At the moment, I’m just trying to get into the club, earn my respect and take it from there. “I’ll just provide a tough, competitive person, who will give their all. “That’s what I’m wanting to prove at the moment, and the rest will come.”

Western Jets coach Torin Baker could see something special in Daniel Venables long before he was selected by the West Coast Eagles in the 2016 AFL national draft. It was back when Venables was playing for the Jets in an under-16 game against Calder Cannons and showing his full repertoire of skills that Baker and Jets region manager Shane Sexton decided he was ready, then and there, to face bigger, stronger and more experienced opponents in the under-18 TAC Cup. “Watching him that day, we were a fan of the way he played and knew he had great talent,” Baker said. Venables, with a taste of the TAC Cup under his belt, fronted up the next season as a bottomage player and showed flashes of brilliance. Any question marks entering his top-age season were dispelled this year when he fronted up in round one and produced a dazzling performance against Oakleigh Chargers. Venables found his way into the Vic Metro side for the national championships by midyear. He impressed in the Big V title-winning run, earning All-Australian honours. The recruiters were drawn to his bull-at-a-gate style in the forward half and his eye for a goal. He ticks another box with his defensive work. Venables got an invitation to the AFL draft combine but could not attend because of a foot injury. He didn’t need the extra testing as West Coast liked what they saw in his football and pounced with pick 13 in the draft. Baker has no doubt Venables will handle the move with aplomb. He says Venables is not too dissimilar to Liam Duggan, a former Western Jet selected by the Eagles in the first round of the 2014 draft. “He’s a strong-minded boy and, like Liam, they’re both really close to their families. When you’re determined to achieve your goal and you’ve got something inside you that says you want to make the most of the opportunity you’ve been given, you find a way.” Lance Jenkinson 53 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 29, 2016

A nice place to be. I’ll take this over an Evoque any day.

12330938-RC46-16 10045858-02

A good thing, but I’d have the Evoque.

kay, I really like BMWs and I admit that, but with the X4 it’s true love. The moment I climbed in and the seat formed perfectly around me I was smitten. And it drives beautifully with usable power always on tap to make it delightfully flexible and a gearbox that you don’t even notice. Mostly it’s the feeling of body strength and integrity that’s so reassuring. This is a relaxing car in the country and, even if the ride gets a little firm across second-class surfaces and B roads, the distance tends to fall away. In town the X4 is the right size, nicely compact but with surprisingly good interior space that’s usable and practical. At one stage we had three across the back seat and it remained manageable and easy to get to the belts. The cargo room is excellent and it’s easy to park. The interior is beautifully finished and the surfaces are warm and tactile. The audio is pretty good. The electronics remain a mystery; pay attention when they are explained.

(iStock)

mall SUVs with rakishly cavalier rear rooflines have a problem – the view from the centre mirror is like looking out of a letter box. I didn’t think anything could be narrower than the Range Rover Evoque’s rear view but this X4 takes the cake. Make sure to set your side mirrors up properly because the blind spots are more blind than most. BMW is challenging the Evoque with the X4, and the Evoque HSE is a very good thing indeed and $13,000 cheaper. So is the BMW better? Well the diesel motor is a beauty and the cabin and fittings are typically BMW – luxurious certainly, but ordered and businesslike. The electronic menus are also typically BMW; designed by engineers. If you don’t think like an engineer then you must learn to do so. The handling is brilliant, the cost being ride quality that gets quite sharp. If your heart’s set on a BMW this is a really good one, but look at the top Evoque before signing the papers.

Offer ends 23/12/2015. Exclusive to Alan Mance Dealerships in Bacchus Marsh only. Advert must be presented to redeem offer. Diesel & 4x4 may incur an extra cost. LMCT 9718
