Armed men strike terror

Four men, armed with a sledgehammer, tomahawk, axe and hammer, terrorised staff and customers at a Melton South liquor shop about a fortnight ago.

Security footage shows the men running into the Bottlemart store at 6.20pm on Friday, November 25, with one jumping the counter and smashing items.

The others followed suit and began threatening staff by smashing cigarette cabinets and waving their weapons above staff members’ heads.

Store manager Jay Bisset pressed the ‘panic button’, which activated the alarm and alerted police as the men forced staff and a customer into a corner of the shop.

The thugs then started breaking cabinets to steal cigarettes, smashing vending machines and breaking bottles of alcohol.

Mr Bisset said the ordeal lasted about four minutes but felt as though it went for at least 20. He said the invaders ran around, causing havoc.

“It was a bit of a shock,” he said. “You see

these things on the news and it happens fairly regularly, but until it happens to you you don’t think anything of it.

“It all happened really quickly, it was like a tornado.”

Mr Bisset said the four stole large quantities of cash and cigarettes, but he was yet to determine the value of damage caused to the store.

Security footage shows the men filling a large sack with cigarettes.

Detective Senior Constable Daniel Basile, of the Darebin crime investigation unit, said police didn’t believe the men were linked to any other armed robberies in Melton and were

likely not from the area. The men, who are believed to be of African appearance, wore dark-coloured clothing and white masks.

Detective Senior Constable Basile described the offending as “aggressive” and urged anyone with information to come forward.

“While they were inside, they were terrorising staff and customers,” he said. “They were smashing and throwing around alcohol bottles.”

It’s believed the men escaped in a white sedan parked nearby.

‘Triangle of death’ broken up

By Sumeyya Ilanbey A multi-million package for a new ambulance station, vehicles and extra staff is aimed at wiping out the region’s “triangle of death” status among paramedics.

Paramedics have previously described Melton, Bacchus Marsh and Sunbury as a “triangle of death” because there’s at least a 20 minute call-out wait on new jobs when staff are tied up with patients or en route to hospitals.

The state government last week announced Melton would get a new ambulance station and vehicle, and an extra 14 full-time equivalent paramedics.

Bacchus Marsh will also get another

ambulance, plus 14 full-time equivalent staff.

The state government earlier this year announced $2.5 million to build a new state-of-the-art ambulance station at Bacchus Marsh. The current station, built almost 50 years ago, responds to about 250 call-outs per month.

The latest announcement is part of a $500 million investment over five years to employ 450 more paramedics, buy new vehicles and build new stations around the state.

The new Melton station will feature a drive-in, drive-out garage bay for ambulances, rest areas, training rooms, modern amenities and a kitchen. It will complement the McKenzie Street station that was built three years ago.

Ambulance Employees Union Victorian branch secretary Steve McGhie said the additional paramedics would ensure an extra day shift and a night shift at Melton and Bacchus Marsh.

He hopes this will ensure at least some resources remain in the area while paramedics transport patients to hospitals, sometimes as far as Royal Melbourne Hospital in the CBD. “I think this will go a long way to assist paramedics,” Mr McGhie said.

“I don’t know if we can ever fix it 100 per cent … because you’ll need to put in that many additional resources, it would be ridiculous.

“This may mean that further support needs to be put in Caroline Springs, so it can tap into

the Melbourne side of Melton.”

Ambulance Services Minister Jill Hennessy said while ambulance response times were improving, there is still more work to do.

“In a medical emergency, every second saves lives,” she said. “That’s why we’re ensuring people in Melton and Bacchus Marsh get the right emergency care quickly, when they need it.”

Melton MP Don Nardella said the new ambulance stations would make a “huge difference” to the towns’ hardworking paramedics.

The funding includes six ‘super response centres’ to be built across Melbourne, including in the west, outer north-west and north.

Good cause comes gift wrapped Bacchus Marsh shoppers and woeful gift wrappers can have their Christmas presents wrapped while donating for a good cause.

Leukaemia Foundation volunteers will set up a gift wrapping station at The Village Bacchus Marsh shopping centre from December 15 to Christmas Eve. All donations collected will go towards the foundation to fund research as well as

provide services to patients and their families.

Leukaemia Foundation acting general manager Meaghan Bush encouraged locals to donate a bit of their time this festive season and help out the foundation.

Ms Bush said more than 13,000 Australians would be diagnosed with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma or another blood disorder by the end of the year.

A Bacchus Marsh battler who’s been to “hell and back” says she’ll no longer have to struggle after being ‘set for life’.

The woman, in her 40s, screamed with delight when Tatts phoned her last week to tell her she won first prize in the Set for Life draw and would be receiving $20,000 each month for 20 years.

“Oh my god! Oh my god! We’ve been struggling for so long,” she said.

“That’s the most amazing thing. I’m pacing around the place, I can’t stand still.

“We’ve had nothing in life and we’ve been to hell and back. Now I feel like the luckiest woman in the world.”

She says she’ll be taking her family on their dream holiday to the North Pole to see Santa at the Santa Claus Village in Finland, and has plans to retire to spend more time with her family.

Police boost to tackle rising crime

By Sumeyya Ilanbey Thousands of police officers will be recruited in the next four years, with more than 2000 slated for frontline duties, as part of a $2 billion state government package to help Victoria Police keep pace with population growth.

The recruitment drive, the largest in the state’s history, comes after a wave of carjackings and aggravated burglaries and months of lobbying by members of the public and the police union.

Police Minister Lisa Neville made the announcement at the weekend, conceding

there had been “incredible pressure” on police in growth corridors.

“We have seen a crime rise, and seen a need to deliver more [police resources],” she said.

“This is about starting the process of turning that around and supporting growing communities in Victoria.”

Victoria Police, the Police Association and the state government have been working on a new staffing allocation model to determine where police will be most needed in the next four years to meet demand.

Chief commissioner Graham Ashton has previously promised growth suburbs, such as

Melton and Caroline Springs, will be prioritised when the new police officers are deployed.

The $2 billion recruitment drive includes 2729 police, on top of the 406 additional police being funded in the 2016-17 budget, with 42 youth specialist officers to target young offenders and work with young people at risk.

Earlier this year, the Police Association called for an extra 3000 police statewide in the next six years.

Association secretary Ron Iddles described the announcement as “historic”.

“I’m confident that today’s historic

announcement will, in time, provide much-needed relief for our over-stretched members and enable them to better protect our citizens and help make Victoria a safer place,” he said.

“We give due credit to minister Neville, who has genuinely listened to your concerns and that of our members on the ground across the state over many months.”

Mr Iddles said the boost to police numbers would be a game-changer for officers struggling to keep pace with the “ice” epidemic, mental health, domestic violence and the threat of terrorism.

A keeper of the kinship Jo Layton doesn’t do it for the accolades or awards, nor does she want the attention. She does it to simply empower the Aboriginal community.

Ms Layton has been volunteering with Djerriwarrh Health Services for three years, reaching out to Aboriginal people in Melton and Bacchus Marsh, encouraging them to connect with mainstream services, and working with service providers.

She says Aboriginal people are still suffering from trauma that was inflicted upon their elders decades ago.

“It’s our people, we’re a collective,” Ms Layton says. “Aboriginal people have always worked together for the good of other people.

“Because of our kinships and connection to country and family, we tend to stick together and help each other out in a collective way.”

Ms Layton wants to improve health outcomes for Aboriginal people and ensure Australians are educated about the country’s first people.

She says her community still suffers from everyday racism, and those barriers need to be broken down.

History has traditionally been written by men about men for men, Bacchus Marsh artist Ri Van Veen says. “Even the word reads ‘his story’ and I want to change that.”

The ceramic sculptor is on a mission to pay homage to the hundreds of women who shaped history, by highlighting and honouring the sacrifices women have made through the years.

“I want to celebrate who we are, our strengths and resilience,” Van Veen says. So she started her ‘Marching Women’ project – sculptures of female bodies that are then exhibited at galleries.

She’s now bringing the project to Bacchus Marsh in a bid to raise awareness about, and money for, domestic violence services. She will be hosting 90-minute workshops where

participants create two ‘marching women’, one to keep and one to donate for sale in an exhibition titled Rise Up at the Bacchus Marsh Arts Council Gallery, on Saturday, February 18.

“Changing a culture of violence starts by creating a culture of wellbeing, and I feel like this does do that,” Van Veen says.

“Doing something that’s very grounding allows people to reflect about domestic violence and women’s roles in society.”

Wrongdoers to be ‘sin-binned’

By Sumeyya Ilanbey Melton council will crack down on its recycling services, with roving inspectors to make spot checks on bins to ensure people aren’t dumping household rubbish in recycling bins.

People can be fined $200 for incorrectly disposing of waste.

New figures reveal the contents of one in six recycling bins collected from Melton households ends up at the tip – almost twice the average number for other metropolitan councils.

Council operations manager Les Stokes said one of the biggest problems was people putting recyclables into bags.

Bagged items are automatically discarded at Visy materials recovery centres because the contents cannot be identified when on the conveyor belt.

Empty plastic bags put into recycling bins can also cause costly machine jams. Due to their lightweight nature, the plastic bags are sorted by machinery the same way as paper, but then get stuck.

“Our municipality continues to grow, which means more waste and the potential for more wasted resources through contamination, so we need to address this now,” Mr Stokes said.

Several years ago the council implemented a similar bin inspection. Mr Stokes said a recent audit showed residents believed the inspections were an effective way to reduce the level of contamination.

He said a personalised approach to bin

inspections was more effective than generic educational messages in newspapers.

After an inspection, residents who have done the right thing, “getting it right on bin night”, will receive a “happy” bin tag and will enter a monthly draw to win a double movie pass.

Mr Stokes said only cans, bottles, plastics that hold their shape, foil, paper and cardboard should be disposed of in the yellow-lid bins.

“Council understands that people move into the City of Melton from different countries, from interstate or simply from other councils in Victoria, and that these may have differing waste and recycling practices depending upon the available technology and end markets,” Mr Stokes said.

During the inspection program, which started this month, residents are also being advised of recyclable materials being lost through kerbside garbage bins.

Man dies after car rollover

A Brookfield man has died after the car he was driving spun out of control and flipped several times. Dylan Mangion, 21, was driving a Ford sedan on Coburns Road at Kurunjang, at 11.15pm on Saturday when he lost control and drove through a fence into a paddock. Mr Mangion was flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital but died shortly after. Two passengers, a 20-year-old Kurunjang man and a 16-year-old Melton South girl, were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Police believe speed was a factor.

By Sumeyya Ilanbey Almost $100,000 of damage has been caused by break-ins at Western Water reservoirs and storage tank reserves in the past few months.

The water company is urging people to be on the lookout after intruders damaged fences to gain entry to some sites.

Water systems and solutions acting manager Rod Curtis said the incidents had been reported to police, but they are unsure why the reservoirs and tank areas are being targeted.

Each break-in has cost Wester Water $20,000 to repair the fences, $5000 to test the water quality and an additional $5000 for manpower, Mr Curtis said.

He said the organisation needs to be hypervigilant after each break-in and ensure the water has not been contaminated.

“We have to commit a huge amount of resources to understand if the water is safe … you can never know for sure before testing it out,” he said. “Even a small breach of the fences can escalate the situation.”

People found guilty of entering drinking water storage areas face fines of up to $9300, or six months’ imprisonment for a first offence.

Western Water will increase security measures at its sites, but Mr Curtis has urged people to stay out.

“These assets are providing water to the community, and if tanks have to be taken offline, there are huge ramifications,” he said.

“This includes water outages or notices.

“It’s important, if people have seen something, to say something.”

Farmland in regional Melbourne must be protected to safeguard the city’s fresh food supply, a new report has found.

The Melbourne’s Food Future report, released last week as the product of a joint research project by Melbourne and Deakin universities, explores what it takes to feed Melbourne, the vulnerabilities for the city’s food supply and significance of the city’s food bowl for its food security.

The report found Melbourne’s food bowl now had the capacity to meet 41 per cent of the city’s food needs, but this could fall to 18 per cent within 35 years.

The report’s five key recommendations essential for a resilient food bowl included a need to protect farmland by fixing the urban growth boundary, introducing planning mechanisms for areas of food production and shifting development pressure from the fringe to existing urban areas.

Urban sprawl into the Macedon Ranges continues to be a concern for sustainability groups and the local residents’ association.

Agricultural production in the Ranges is valued at about $43 million a year. But residents association secretary Christine Pruneau said conserving the Ranges’ natural landscapes for recreation, tourism and water catchment should be prioritised even over agriculture.

“We have very high-quality soil in this region … we need to start looking at the land as an asset,” she said.

Men ignore booze harm message

By Sumeyya Ilanbey More than half of Moorabool men, and a third of Melton men, are at risk of short-term alcohol harm each month, figures reveal.

The VicHealth Indicators Survey found 54 per cent of Moorabool men and 35 per cent of Melton men guzzled five or more standard drinks in one sitting at least once a month.

In Moorabool, 12 per cent of men and, in Melton, 15 per cent of men indicated they drank 11 or more standard drinks in one sitting at least once a month. VicHealth alcohol and tobacco manager Emma Saleeba said the

figures, which were consistent across the state, were worrying.

“We find that men certainly do consume more alcohol than women,” Ms Saleeba said.

“There are a lot of different reasons for this, but one is that a lot of the way men socialise can tend to be focused around drinking environments and occasions.”

She said some men felt the need to drink alcohol to feel “masculine” or be accepted.

Unlike other health issues, excessive drinking isn’t limited to people from specific cultures or lower socio-economic backgrounds.

backgrounds tended to drink less, they were more vulnerable to alcohol-related harm and tended to have poorer overall health outcomes.

She said governments and local organisations needed to target excessive alcohol consumption by creating environments that helped reduce unhealthy drinking habits.

While teenagers and young adults had

been a big focus for service providers and governments in terms of alcohol education, Ms Saleeba said generation X and baby boomers had been unfortunately overlooked.

“While young adults do drink in riskier ways than old people, we are seeing changes in the way they are drinking,” she said.

“But we’re not seeing the same changes for baby boomers and generation X – they’re a cohort of risky drinkers and aren’t changing their behaviours.”

Middle-aged and older men make up the highest group of alcohol-related ambulance call-outs, according to Ambulance Victoria.

Hospital clear on maternity role

By Sumeyya Ilanbey Djerriwarrh Health Services says it’s confident risks posed to its maternity services patients have been lessened by working closely with their general practitioners in the wake of the baby death scandal.

At its annual general meeting, service obstetrics director Nisha Khot said the Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital had developed a comprehensive framework, which had been distributed to GPs. Ms Khot said this was essential in ensuring patients, local doctors and midwives were aware of the services the hospital was capable of providing.

“Prior to this year, we didn’t have a capability framework and there wasn’t a clear-cut ‘this is what we do and this is what we don’t do’,” Ms Khot said. “But now, we’re doing what we’re capable of instead of doing something that is clearly out of our scope, which makes it dangerous for women, babies and staff.”

An investigation commissioned by the health department, and led by Professor Euan Wallace, found there were 11 potentially avoidable infant deaths between 2001 and 2014 at the hospital, while some high-risk mothers and babies had not been transferred to larger hospitals.

they were not equipped to deal with and that mothers deserved to be provided with a safe service.

She said part of the problem at the hospital, and across the country, were hospitals’ failures to identify what they were capable of doing.

She said there had been a drop in the numbers of women using the hospital to give birth to their babies.

“That can be attributed to women being reluctant to come to us given the publicity, but part of that has been because we’ve been telling women they’re better off going to another hospital,” Ms Khot said.

“It’s possible, going into the future, that we’ll be able to see more and more women … but women come to us with the impression we’re providing them with a safe service, and if we can’t provide it we have to be honest.”

The state government recently announced $10 million in funding to upgrade health services at the Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital, including expanding the maternity unit.

All aboard, but no room for more

By Sumeyya Ilanbey There is no certainty Caroline Springs commuters will get on board when their new station opens next month – passing trains are already at capacity, transport data shows.

Last month, the state government announced four peak hour Ballarat line trains would stop at Caroline Springs, but V/Line performance figures show the existing morning and evening peak hour services are already full.

Six morning peak hour trains on the Ballarat line – including those scheduled to arrive at

Caroline Springs at 7.26am, 7.41am, 8.01am and 8.27am – are already full by the time they pass Caroline Springs, while four evening services are also full by the time they pass Caroline Springs.

Other peak hour services are almost full, the data shows.

Plans for a Caroline Springs train station were floated almost a decade ago, but construction started only last year.

Greens regional development portfolio spokesman Greg Barber said it is disappointing residents who have waited almost 20 years to

get a station won’t be able to get on the line. He said successive state governments had been too slow to invest in Melbourne’s outer west.

“Every time you improve the V/Line service, it gets a massive increase in patronage,” Mr Barber said.

“If you’re improving the service, people are going to use it, and you need a further plan … for that increased use.

“There’s been decades of under-investment by both Labor and Liberal governments, and it’s not due to a lack of money.”

Mr Barber said adding extra off-peak services

would not reduce overcrowding on trains. Last month the state government announced it will introduce 10 new weekly services on the Ballarat line from January 29, but it has not yet released the timetable for these services.

It has also ruled out early bird specials on regional trains, which are currently being offered on Metro services to encourage commuters to use earlier services.

A spokesman for Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said, in the past 18 months, 15 new carriages have been added to Ballarat line services, giving people more travel options.

Wildlife wonderland The Willows Homestead Reserve has been transformed by the magic touches of a local plant group.

The reserve has come a long way and the native plants are now thriving, according to Australian Plant Society Melton Bacchus Marsh member Barb Pye. The group has been working for a decade to beautify the gardens at the reserve, and it’s finally coming together.

“It’s starting to look really nice after a very long time,” Ms Pye says.

“Now, we’re also interested in the Melton Botanic Garden.”

Ms Pye says Melton’s dry landscape provides the perfect breeding ground for Australian plants, which thrive in desert-like conditions.

And there’s more to the native flora than gum trees, she says.

“We’re very keen for people to plant more natives and they’re particularly good for

attracting wildlife,” she says. “We want people to know that there are small native plants.

For example, the native daisies look really good in any situation and in this garden there are eremophilas, and they are really beautiful.”

The group meets at the Willows, 3 Reserve Road, Melton, on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 7.30pm.

MY PLACE Wayne Marshall joined Moorabool Writer’s Craft two years ago. The stay-at-home father of two young children tells Sumeyya Ilanbey why it’s important to be connected to like-minded people.

We’ve lived here in Bacchus Marsh for about five and a half years now. We were in Yarraville for a few years, but my wife and I grew up in Melton. My wife’s family originally came from here – her grandparents had the first butcher shop on Main Street. When we were looking to buy a place, the inner city was far too expensive, so we came out here to start a family. When we came, we saw this place, loved it and bought it.

What’s your favourite thing about living in Bacchus Marsh?

I’m a stay-at-home parent and right now there is a real community of stay-at-home parents.

Looking after kids this young is a struggle, but we’ve made a lot of friends, and a lot of that is through the library’s rhyme time storytime sessions … Bacchus Marsh is the sort of place where, if we put the kids in a pram and take a walk, we bump into five or six friends. Having that support and friendship makes the days a lot easier.

What would you change about the area if you could?

Traffic is a big problem. We live right next to Gisborne Road – we’re lucky we can walk everywhere – but there are some really big log-jams. It needs to be fixed and remedied really fast.

Where’s your favourite place to hang out?

The library. I take the kids to rhyme time

storytime sessions … and it has such a great atmosphere. It’s a great library for a regional one and the collection is fantastic. They run so many programs for kids and we have so many friends there. It’s not a library of 10 or 20 years ago where it was deadly silent – it’s a really fun, friendly place.

How did you get involved with writing?

I’ve been writing on and off for 20 years now. I was a lyricist for a band and, in my early 20s, I started writing short stories, and just pursued that. I’ve had a few short stories published this year and it’s something I love doing and working on, as much as time permits.

What’s the best thing about being involved in a writer’s club?

The support. Writing can be a very isolating and alienating experience, particularly in small towns. Art isn’t something that is high on the agenda for a lot of people – it’s a very sporty culture, so as a writer, having a network of people doing the same thing, having the same experiences and talking about it, is encouraging. It pushes you to keep going with your work.

What do you think makes a good writer?

That’s a complicated question … someone with an imagination that can take you somewhere else is great. For other people, it would be someone who has a lot of insight into the things they see around them and is able to mirror them back. For me, it’s the writer’s imagination.

Families are accustomed to the dark arts of scavenging Wi-Fi, because it takes up so much of our travelling budget.

Technology is an essential part of our lives: We want to stay in touch back home, remain entertained during the journey, and keep a record of our experiences.

It’s easy to grab a travel pack from your local telco, but they’re extortionately expensive.

“The best, and the one I use, is Vodafone,

which allows customers to make and receive calls, and use the data their plan entitles them to, for just $5 a day in more than 55 countries,” Stephen Fenech, the editor of TechGuide.com. au, says.

Ten essential items every traveller should pack

“I just remember to carry a pair of earphones so I can hear them easily and they can hear me without me having to shout in the middle of the store/restaurant/cafe/airport lounge.” You can check your emails on the computers in Apple Stores, too.

Remember this rule is for each family device: Turn off data roaming or you’ll be slugged with $3 a MB. That’s a costly Facebook post.

Also, switch off location services and push notifications.

We always carry a powerboard with four points. Then, you only need one international adaptor to connect to the wall. A portable battery is handy, if you’re on the move.

You don’t have to send the children to scrounge for connectivity, like Bear Grylls seeking beetles on the rainforest floor.

Search the urban jungle for a tech store instead: It’s infinitely more civilised.

“Goofy goes on holiday” snickers my spouse unkindly as I head for the airport, trailing snorkel and fins, or cleated cycling shoes, or possibly spiked walking poles. Every trip is different, and packing for every trip requires a curatorial approach.

The travel kit for my next adventure might include sandals specially constructed for walking on reefs, a solar-powered battery charger for the one after that. Regardless of where my ticket says I’m going, at the nucleus of every trip is a time-tested cluster of items that sit in a box labelled “must ride”.

1. A small, squashable day pack that you can fling in your luggage, essential for toting water bottles, tablet device or guidebook and a raincoat or folding umbrella and all the other odds and sods you need on day trips. Also handy as a spillover bag for the homeward journey if you shop too enthusiastically.

2. Clothes dry quicker if they’re hung on a line rather than draped over a bathroom rail. I use a double-strand braided, elastic version with hooks at either end, which holds clothes tight without pegging.

3. Slippery cobblestones and open drains lie in wait for the unwary after dark, which makes a torch a necessity.

I use an UltraFire Cree LED torch which casts a big pool of light and also zooms down to a pinpoint, available from Amazon USA for US$6.15. In the wilds, a head torch is better since they leave

4. Quality earplugs are a must for those whose sleep is less than sound, and handy for blocking aircraft noise as well.

My favourites are the soft, tapering, orange Howard Leight MAX1 Earplugs, available from Amazon.

5. Sarongs are the traveller’s best friend.

Use one as nightwear, a standby beach towel, modest covering for temple visits or wrap one around a jumper to make a pillow.

8. Universal adapter plug. Some come with a USB charge port, which is a useful addition. Make sure the adapter plug has three holes for compatibility with all Australian 3-pin plugs – some do not.

9. Especially for the hotel-hopping traveller who is unlikely to unpack properly, zip-lock plastic bags are a gift from the travel gods, vital for separating clean from less-than, wet from dry. Also great for sealing potentially leaky items.

10. Superglue has a thousand uses. You can save a flapping shoe sole, mend a suitcase or just do what I usually do and glue your fingers together.

6. The Swiss Army knife (right) is part of the standard kit for NASA astronauts, and no self-respecting traveller should be without one. From fingernails to dealing with wine corks to digging stones from yaks’ hooves, this is a complete toolkit in a pocket-size pack (just don’t leave it in your carry-on at the airport – it will likely be confiscated by security).

Sunnies help keep eyes bright Summer comes with its own official SunSmart mantra – slip on a T-shirt, slop on the sunblock, slap on a hat, seek some shade and slide on the sunnies.

Sunglasses are too often forgotten and, simply put, they aren’t just for looks.

Sunglasses are integral to maintaining healthy eyes and in some cases can save our sight.

Dr Lewis Levitz, of the Vision Eye Institute of Victoria, says long-term exposure to UV light can severely damage eyes.

“UV light can do serious damage to your eyes in the short and long term, and a sight issue caused by sun damage can be permanent,” says Dr Levitz.

There are several ailments caused by sun exposure – acute photo keratopathy (sunburned corneas), cataracts, eye cancer, macular degeneration, pterygium (a fleshy growth over the cornea) and pinguecula (a thickened spot on the white part of the eye).

Here are seven tips for choosing sight-saving sunglasses 1. Check the classification. There are four categories, and all cosmetic sunglasses will be labelled accordingly.

2. Be colour wise. Darker lenses may look more fashionable, but that has nothing to do with their level of protection.

3. Bigger is better. They might not be your idea of fashionable but wraparound sunglasses are the best when you spend lots of time outside.

4. Cost considerations. You don’t have to spend hundreds on a pair of good sunnies; some can be as cheap as $10 and come with good UV protection.

5. To polarise or not to polarise? Polarised glass can cut down on glare and haze, but may not have high UV protection – so remember to check the category.

6. Start young. The sooner parents encourage the wearing of sunglasses, the more likely children are to avoid future eye issues.

7. Make them a daily accessory. The sun can be harmful, even on a cloudy day, so always have a pair of sunnies handy.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir enjoys a Werribee treat where selfies are in vogue Luckily for us, the Indian food we most like is frequently produced by eateries at the lower end of the price spectrum.

But, for once, we decide to try one of the spiffier places on Watton Street.

Not that Nawab Sahab, once youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re inside, is overwhelmingly grand or anything like that.

And the prices are very reasonable.

Unusually for a western suburbs Indian eating house these days, there is no inclusion of South Indian fare such as dosas, idlis, vadas and the like, and only a minimal Indo-Chinese component.

But there are handy point-of-difference choices under menu headings such as Mumbai Special and Delhi Corner.

Nawab Sahab also has a feature Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve never before seen in an Indian restaurant â&#x20AC;&#x201C; or a restaurant of any kind: a â&#x20AC;&#x153;selfie stationâ&#x20AC;? at which guests are invited to â&#x20AC;&#x153;dress up like a Hyderabadi princeâ&#x20AC;?.

We love it that a serve of papadums â&#x20AC;&#x201C; unoily, crisp and with minty and tamarind dipping sauces on the side â&#x20AC;&#x201C; is brought to our table without charge, as is a second serve.

For the first of two visits, Bennie and I enjoy the â&#x20AC;&#x153;goldâ&#x20AC;? thali â&#x20AC;&#x201C; at $21.50, a little more expensive than most of their kind, but still good. Nice rice, a tangy chicken curry, a mushy one-of-the-veg kind, rather crunchy chick peas, a way-better-than-average raita, onion/ pickle and a somewhat doughy gulab jamun â&#x20AC;&#x201C; weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re happy with what we eat.

Bennieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s order of chicken noodles is a mistake.

Much as we like Indo-Chinese food, this dish reinforces for us the folly of ordering noodles in Indian eateries â&#x20AC;&#x201C; though we have come across a few exceptions.

At $17.50, this is over-priced for a very average noodle outing, though the serve is bigger, and deeper, than it first appears.

Really, either of the cheapie noodle houses a block away would do better for a quick wok noodle fry-up.

Unfortunately, Bennie completes his dinner before mine arrives â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and by now Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m wishing weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d gone elsewhere.

My Amritsari kulcha ($16.50) does, however, redeem our night handily, especially when the second, advertised naan arrives. The naan have only the very faintest paneer quotient but are hot, lovely and slathered with ghee.

The chick peas are the same dark and overtly al dente specimens served with our earlier thalis, and the raita is again superb.

SPORT Bad start puts Melton outside top four Melton came across its toughest opponent so far in Bowls Victoria Pennant division 1, section 1 on Saturday – and fell short.

Playing a Fitzroy-Victoria team with an Australian representative and state players, Melton was left to rue its slow start.

Once behind, Melton didn’t recover, losing 79 (14)-68 (4). Melton secretary John Adams said Fitzroy Victoria showed the level they needed to play to match it against top sides.

“We got close in the end, but we had a bad start overall,” he said. “We were 17 down at the break and ended up losing by 11 shots. We fought it out right to the end – they are a good young team and play some good bowls.

“Their youngest player was 43; the majority of our players are in their 60s and 70s. They are by far the best team we’ve played this season.”

Conrad Dawson and Ray Morrissey skipped the winning rinks, which meant they didn’t come away empty-handed.

“If you are going to lose, if you can get at least four points – it means it’s not a total loss.

Melton has slipped outside the top four, but it remains in touch with the top sides.

Deer Park slipped to third after losing its third straight match, while sixth-placed Sunbury missed an opportunity to go above Melton, losing to a struggling Werribee.

Adams said they need to win the two games before the Christmas break, and signalled changes to the side to help fire up a couple of the rinks.

“We play Altona Sports away, and even though they’re not going well, it won’t be easy.

We then play Moonee Valley, who we defeated

at home. Playing away at their green is different.

If we can win these two games, it puts us in the top four.

“If we lose, it will put us behind the eight-ball heading into the second half of the season.”

Melton’s second side stays top of the ladder.

In the Central Highlands Bowls Division division 1, the top two sides had big wins and both remain undefeated.

Gisborne defeated Kyneton Golf, 110 (14)-78 (4), while Lancefield won 126 (16)-65 (2) against Trentham. Romsey won against Woodend, while Kyneton snuck home by one shot against Bacchus Marsh.

Lions bowlers hold key

By Tara Murray Melton is backing its bowlers to do the job after the Lions let slip the opportunity to post a solid score in Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association’s east-west.

Having not had a lot of time at the crease in recent weeks, the Lions took the opportunity to bat first against Mt Waverley – despite the late withdrawal of in-form opening batsman Ben MacRae just hours before the game.

At 2-122 at tea, the Lions looked in control, but from there it all went wrong.

Lions playing coach Nathan Geisler said the side didn’t make the most of the solid start to the innings.

“We had to reshuffle things – Butch [Anthony Gale] and Michael Alexander opened the innings,” Geisler said.

“They got us off to a steady start before ‘Kirky’ [David Kirk] and Butch put on nearly a 100-run partnership. “ ‘Kirky’ went out the last ball before tea.

I spoke to them at the break, and said we are in a good position [but] it could go one of two ways.”

Unfortunately for the Lions, Mt Waverley’s bowlers got on top, dismissing the Lions for 163.

Geisler was the only other batsman to reach double figures.

“I would have liked another 30 to 40 runs,” he said. “It didn’t pan out the way we would have liked. They bowled well and fielded well.”

Despite being disappointed with the batting performance, Geisler said they were more than confident of getting the wickets on day two.

And why wouldn’t they? They have won their previous two-day match outright and bowled Hoppers Crossing out for 19 in a one-day match.

They will have to do it without star bowler Brad Jones, who is missing this game.

“We still feel like we are in the game,” Geisler said. “They have struggled with the bat and haven’t got over 120 in the last three hits.

“Bowling is our strength, even without Jones.

Aaron Sweet is bowling well and Jake Charge is getting wickets.

“Dylan Clarke will get more of a chance to get a few overs.”

Meanwhile, the Lions lost a thrilling clash with St Bernard’s OC’s in the opening round of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association’s knockout T20 competition.

Held a week later than expected due to rain the Tuesday before, St Bernard’s OC made 8-141 off its 20 overs.

In reply, the Lions made 7-140 falling two runs short of victory and knocking them out of the competition.

Reigning Premier division titleholders Riddell heads the sides that are through to finals of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s Kookaburra T20 competition. The Bombers beat Diggers Rest Bulla in round two to seal top spot and will face Woodend who defeated Rupertswood. Sunbury, the other undefeated team in Premier division, will face Gisborne, which won its first match on Tuesday night against Bacchus Marsh in the other semi. In district division, Sunbury United plays Kyneton and Macedon faces Wallan in semi-finals being played Tuesday (December 6).

Bowls

The Avenue made it two wins in as many weeks in the Ballarat District Bowls division. Having waited until round seven to get a win in division 1, the Avenue continued its good form against top side Ballarat East. Bill Hawken, Steve Sullivan and Charlie Grant led winning rinks, which was enough to offset the loss by Ben Gould’s rink. The Avenue won 93 (16)-85 (2), the result opening a gap between Avenue and the bottom two sides.

Bacchus Marsh needs quick wickets against Riddell in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup. The Bulls struggled on day one, making just 112. Ian Spiteri top-scored with 21. In reply, the Bombers are 2-36. Madushanka Ekanayaka has both wickets for the Bulls. Diggers Rest Bulla made 9-197 against Woodend.

Western Jets’ Oscar Junker was one of the few to find an AFL home in last Monday’s AFL rookie draft. Junker, a Werribee Districts junior, was taken by North Melbourne with its second pick of the draft. Jets coach Torin Baker was impressed with Junker’s versatility onfield and his leadership as co-captain during a season in which he finished second in the club best-and-fairest behind Brodie Romensky. “He’s a natural footballer, highly skilled and an excellent character,” Baker said.

Darley star starts slow before flying to a century

After teasing all season, Darley’s Lachlan Herring has finally cracked a big score in the Ballarat Cricket Association.

Before Saturday, Herring had got starts in the first three matches, but hadn’t been able to go on and make a big score.

Against Brown Hill on Saturday, it was a different story as he put his team in a good position to chase the win.

Herring was patient early in his innings, but once settled he kicked on, finishing 134 not out as the Lions posted 8-291.

Lions captain-coach Heath Pritchard said Herring’s century was well deserved.

“He was really patient,” he said. “He was about 60 off 60 overs before he got going after tea.

“He made 75 odd in the last 20 overs.

Speaking to players at the club, they don’t think they’ve ever had a player bat through an innings like that.”

Herring was well supported by Matthew Cape, who made 60 and put on a partnership of 121 with Herring after the tea break.

Hasitha Wickramasinghe chipped in with 36.

It’s the second time in three games the Lions have posted a score of more than 250.

A win would return the Lions to the winners’ list after a disappointing loss to Mt Clear in the previous round.

“We need to make sure that we bowl well and make sure we don’t let their good players off the hook,” Pritchard said.

It’s been a busy week for the Lions, as they’ve also played in two T20 matches as part of the BCA’s The Sporting Globe T20 Shield.

Each side plays three matches in the round-robin competition.

The Lions kicked off the competition with a loss to Ballan. The Lions made 7-121, Drew Locke top-scoring with 45.

In reply, Ballan made 5-126 from its 20 overs.

Cape, with two wickets, was the only multiple wicket taker for the Lions.

On Sunday, the Lions’ encounter with Golden Point was drawn.

Pritchard said the side was very much about using the T20 matches to give different players an opportunity to play in the top side.

“We’re looking at blooding the young guys,” he said. “For us, it’s not for the purpose of winning.

“We’re also looking at a couple of guys who have come to the club.

“Joshua Calvitto has come across from playing at Bacchus Marsh and gets a chance, while Allan Steenholdt is a former captain of the club who has returned.

“Hopefully, he’ll get into the weekend side after Christmas.”

Import does the trick

By Lance Jenkinson A hat-trick to English import Steven Sandhu turned the game in Sydenham-Hillside’s favour in a 65-run win over Barkly Street Uniting in the VTCA north A1 at Hillside Recreation Reserve on Saturday.

The Storm had a mere 186 runs to play with, which captain Kane Twentyman admitted was touch and go to defend.

But with Sandhu producing his most devastating spell of bowling on Australian soil, it was more than enough for the Storm to register a comfortable win.

“I thought if they got a couple of partnerships together they might get on top of us,” Twentyman said.

“As it turned out, we put the screws on nice and early.

“Steve went berserk for 10 balls, taking 4-2, including a hat-trick.

“That put us on the front foot from there because they were 2-50 and all of a sudden 6-52.”

Sandhu has been a fine acquisition for Sydenham-Hillside this summer.

The all-rounder had shown plenty with both bat and ball, but his bowling performance was one out of the box.

The hat-trick ball is obviously one that spectators aren’t likely to forget, but Sandhu’s post hat-trick celebration is also one that will stay in the memory.

“Steve took the first wicket of his hat-trick off the last ball of an over, then I bowled from the other end and nothing too exciting happened,” Twentyman said.

“Steve got a wicket first ball of his next over and then we set the field, a couple of guys in close on the leg side, a couple in close on the off, five slips, two gullies, all that sort of stuff, and Steve made him play, bowled a really good back-of-a-length ball at the top of the stumps.

The bloke had to play at it and hit a lollipop to one of the guys in close.

“It was like a training catch; just hit it straight to the bloke. Steve nearly did a lap of the oval to celebrate, we couldn’t catch him!”

Sandhu finished with his first five-for for Sydenham-Hillside.

He also made 28 for his low-scoring side, leaving no doubt over the awarding of man of the match honours.

“He’s had a day out,” Twentyman said.

“The young fella can play and we’re happy that he’s playing with us.

“He’s six-foot-five so he gets good purchase and bounce off the wicket, and he’s a likeable character whose really starting to fit in with the group.”

Starting Saturday, Sydenham-Hillside will face Sunshine at Dempster Park in the final two-day match before the Christmas break.

Twentyman returns to his former club believing it’s the side to beat this summer.

“It will be interesting playing against the old mob again,” the captain said.

“I’ve go some good friendships there and there will be a bit of banter and a bit of heat in

the game, which is a good thing. We’ll be up for the challenge.

“I still stand by that; I think they’re the pick of the grade.”

Melton has taken a liking to the T20 format, with the Lions off to a blistering start in Victorian Premier seconds T20 competition.

Having won their opening match against Prahran by 93 runs last weekend, the Lions faced a double-header on Sunday.

They started the day playing Dandenong, and then faced Essendon Maribyrnong Park in the afternoon.

In the first match, the Lions were sent in, making 7-101 off its 20 overs.

Dandenong pushed the Lions the whole way, before being bowled out for 89 with four balls remaining.

Kerri Garwood, Laura Shaw, Janelle Hayhurst and Briony Polkinghorne shared the wickets around for the Lions.

It was a little easier against Essendon Maribyrnong Park in the second game.

Essendon Maribyrnong Park elected to bat but struggled to get going, making 8-95.

Garwood (three wickets) and Hayhurst (two wickets) were the pick of the bowlers.

The Lions made the runs with ease, with five wickets and three and half overs to spare.

The two wins on Sunday put the Lions on top of the ladder after three matches.

They are one of two undefeated teams along with Carlton-Brunswick.

So far, the Lions are undefeated this season. They’ve won two one-day matches to go with four weather-enforced draws.

They sit second on the one day ladder, two points behind Ringwood.

insisted we get the ST-L rather than the base ST (at $37,437 with 4WD) that Rod suggested. I wanted leather seats and integrated navigation and I like the CVT gearbox. After 12,000 kilometres he’s almost at the point of admitting I was right.

The driving position is high and comfortable with good visibility and I love the surround camera that makes reverse parking and tight manoeuvring anywhere a cinch. The electronics are user-friendly and intuitive and the cruise control is accurate.

The navigation goes into a snit from time to time and has to be reset, otherwise it’s easy to drive, although I’d like faster pick-up in overtaking.

There’s generous cabin space and good seating, with electronic adjustment on both sides at the front. The rear seat backs are also adjustable. And there’s a power outlet in the cargo area for a 12-volt fridge.

With modest exterior dimensions, it’s not intimidating. I took to it quickly and like driving it.

So when time came for our own Big Trip, we bought one of my recommendations, an X-Trail 4WD. It’s generous inside, compact outside and, while most competitive models offer only full-time 4WD, this has selectable 4WD and diff lock for when the going gets tough. The X-Trail’s problem, is the skinny space-saver spare. Nissan wanted $680 for a full-size wheel without a tyre, but after a lot of looking I found a second-hand one, with a good tyre, for $360.

We got a heap of luggage on board but the performance was still good and the economy impressive. The continuously variable auto is nicely calibrated and the handling and ride are both acceptable. And when you’re on the dirt selecting 4WD and then locking the diff is as easy as turning a console dial.
