Thieves, thugs spoil festa By Alexandra Laskie A large group of youths gate-crashed a popular Caroline Springs festival at the weekend, leaving a teenager in hospital and some festival-goers robbed of their mobile phones and handbags. Melton council’s annual Summersault festival turned sour about 10pm on Saturday when a group of an estimated 30 to 40 teenagers descended upon a crowd watching the festival finale’s fireworks display. Six people reported having their mobile phones snatched from their hands as they were filming the fireworks, and two people have reported being assaulted, according
to a Victoria Police spokeswoman. Debbie Tesoriero’s 16-year-old son Jack spent the night in hospital after he was punched and had his phone stolen at the event. “My understanding is that he was knocked out. He didn’t know where he was, he didn’t know what day it was,” Ms Tesoriero told the Seven Network. It’s believed Jack had been walking a friend back to a car when he was jumped by the group, she said. One witness, Joe Cuic, said a “big pack” ran through the crowd, grabbing mobile phones and handbags as festival-goers recorded the fireworks. He then saw youths throwing rocks at apartment buildings.
“Out of nowhere, everyone’s gone from standing there watching, having a lovely time, to people just running in all directions,” Mr Cuic told the Seven Network. Melton councillor Steve Abboushi, who attended the festival with his family, said he left halfway through the fireworks display when he could sense trouble was brewing. “I was there with my four-year-old and I could sense there was something brewing so I packed up, jumped in the car and called the police,” he said. Cr Abboushi said the council had ample security measures in place, but there was little it could do to stop being “gate-crashed”. “How do you stop people jumping on public
transport and gate-crashing a party,” he said. “There was adequate security and a police presence; we were just outnumbered. “My personal view is that we need to review the youth justice system and offer more support for disenfranchised youths living on the fringe,” he told Star Weekly. The alcohol-free festival, promoted as a family-centric event, is held annually and features music, food stalls and rides. Sport venues a tight fit for clubs By Sumeyya Ilanbey Caroline Springs sports clubs are feeling the strain of a lack of stadiums, with one club’s members being forced to travel to nearby Brimbank for training. With 750 players and 65 teams, Caroline Springs Blue Devils Basketball Club, which plays in the Keilor Junior Basketball Association, was hoping this year to book out three courts over six days at the Caroline Springs Leisure Centre. Instead, Melton council has cut back the club’s hours (from five days to three), granting
them access for training on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The Little Devils program has been moved from Saturday to Sunday. The Futsal Association has booked out Mondays, the Caroline Springs Basketball Association Tuesdays and the Netball Association Wednesdays. Blue Devils Basketball Club secretary Ben Collier said junior players were being shuffled around to courts in nearby municipalities at the eleventh hour; being forced to squeeze onto courts at the Caroline Springs Leisure Centre – with teams training on only a quarter of
court space – or training outside “in this heat”. “Melton council has been a great stakeholder and we’ve had a great relationship over 10 years, but we’re frustrated,” Mr Collier said. “We’re trying to understand how and why it happened. We’re trying to have kids be healthy and fit, learn some social skills and get them active and learn competitive sport.” Caroline Springs Basketball Association president Andrew Henry said he was feeling the club’s pain, but the two-hour booking on Tuesdays were imperative to growing the association. “We can’t have a competition if we
don’t have court space, and that’s the reason we’ve requested Tuesday nights,” he said. “We’ve got 42 teams now. We were also hoping to get Monday night, but we didn’t.” Melton council recreation and youth manager Troy Scoble said the council had worked hard with clubs to manage the allocation. He said many groups were requesting additional space, including the Caroline Springs Basketball Association’s senior competition, which is full. “Council is also planning construction of two additional courts to provide more opportunities for residents.”

Sydenham-Hillside Primary School celebrated multiple milestones when six sets of twins, including three identical, started at the school last week. Sydenham campus principal Glenn McGarigle described the twins’ first day as “a very special event” and a new record for the school. “This is by far the biggest set of twins starting in prep in the 20 years I’ve been at the school,” he said.
Melton council has given the green light for a Christmas market at Plumpton, despite opposition from neighbours concerned about road safety. Melbourne Christmas Tree Farm, at 319-391 Leakes Road, sought approval for a Christmas market to operate on Sundays from 9am until 3pm between September and December. Nearby landowners objected to the application citing traffic and safety concerns on Leakes Road, “unreasonable” impacts on neighbours and diminution of property values. But council officers said it was unlikely an increase in traffic once a week would cause major safety concerns. They said the proposal could complement rural and agricultural activities at nearby properties, and denied the stated impact on property prices, saying there was no evidence to suggest property values would go down as a result of the market. A heated debate ensued at last week’s Melton council meeting, with councillors divided on the market issue. The mayor used her casting vote to approve the application, which is subject to 23 permit conditions. A council report presented at last week’s meeting stated Melbourne Christmas Tree Farm had twice sought approval for a farmer’s market, both of which been knocked back. “The proposed market contemplated by this application is of a much smaller scale than those previously considered by council and the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, and also seasonal in nature,” the report stated.

Lions share for kids When vandals set alight playground equipment at Maddingley Park, Bacchus Marsh Lions Club wasted no time setting things right again. Secretary Russ Hendry, an engineer, drew up a design, while several other members carved the wood to make the train carriage. Club president Mark Robson said it was the second time playground equipment at Maddingley Park had been rebuilt by the Lions. “This was for the enjoyment of young
children, and then you get these clowns who get in there either graffiti-ing, setting things alight or just vandalising,” Mr Robson said. “I’m very proud of our club, but this is nothing out of the ordinary for us. “These are the sorts of things we do – community projects for the youngsters around town.” Sumeyya Ilanbey

Logistics giant gets jobs going By Sumeyya Ilanbey A global supply chain has set up its $80 million Australasian headquarters in Truganina, creating 300 jobs and committing to recruit and retrain retrenched automotive workers. CEVA Logistics opened its 166,000 square metre transport, distribution and logistics hub – equivalent in size to eight MCGs – on Friday, the largest warehouse under one roof in the southern hemisphere. Of the 250 people recently employed, dozens are former automotive staff made redundant
following the closures at Ford and Holden, Ceva’s Australia New Zealand managing director Carlos Velez Rodriguez said. Mr Rodriguez said the company had committed to retraining people who had lost jobs as a result of the automotive sector’s decline. An extra 40 positions are due to be advertised soon. Mr Rodriguez said Truganina had been identified as the best location to set up a logistics hub after months of research, citing the suburb’s proximity to Melbourne, its ports, curfew-free airports and highways.
“And then we heard about the [Western Distributor],” Mr Rodriguez said. “That project is critical … Victoria is at the heart of the Australian economy. Victoria has fantastic business-oriented politicians and community – we have the harbour next door to us, we have highways going from Sydney to Adelaide, railway hubs and fantastic employees. How could it be better?” Construction on the warehouse started in 2013, and finished last year. The building is environmentally-friendly, with 4000 solar panels expected to generate 95 per cent of the
building’s electricity, and tanks able to hold 100,000 litres of rainwater. Industry and Employment Minister Wade Noonan said the state government is committed to working with big business that wants to set up headquarters in Victoria, and invest in infrastructure. “[This type of investment] creates jobs, new opportunities, and the downstream economic impacts of companies, like Ceva, investing heavily in Melbourne’s west and Victoria has a great spin-off impact for our economy,” Mr Noonan said.

Heat’s on to save kids By Sumeyya Ilanbey Paramedics were called out to 45 incidents of children being left in locked cars in Melton last year. Ambulance Victoria has issued a stern warning to parents and carers, reminding them of the deadly consequences of a split-second decision to leave children in a car alone. Melton West had the highest number of such incidents in the municipality, at 11, followed by Melton (9) and then Hillside, Melton South and Taylors Hill (four). State health commander Paul Holman said people don’t seem to be listening to the warnings about the risks involved in leaving children in hot cars. Ambulance Victoria testing has found that on a 29-degree day, the interior of a car can reach 44 degrees in 10 minutes, and 60 degrees within 20 minutes. “It is never OK to leave a child in a car,” Mr Holman said. “Even if you’re just ducking into the shops, you might get distracted or bump into someone you know, and time can tick away much quicker than you realise. “Given how much education there is about the dangers of leaving children in cars, it is disappointing that some people still decide to take that risk.” Statewide, paramedics were called to 1562 incidents, with 80 per cent involving a toddler and eight per cent a newborn. Of these, 15 children were transported to hospital. Narre Warren (30), Pakenham (27) and Preston (25) rounded out the top three suburbs for children left in cars. “You wouldn’t get out of the car after shopping and leave your ice cream in the back seat – so why would you leave your children there?” Mr Holman asked.

Pools, gym in council hands Moorabool council has quashed rumours it plans to close the Bacchus Marsh and Ballan leisure facilities, assuring the community it will directly manage and operate the centres. The Bacchus Marsh Leisure Centre and Bacchus Marsh and Ballan outdoor pools have been operated by Belgravia Leisure for the past decade. Councillors agreed at this month’s council meeting to take over operations rather than outsourcing them to contractors. As part of the restructure, effective from June 30, council will directly manage the Bacchus Marsh and Ballan outdoor pools, lease the leisure centre gym to an external provider and directly operate all kiosk facilities. There were fears the council would close down the leisure centre and pools after a council report stated there was a declining membership base. Officers told this month’s council meeting the decision to operate the facilities in-house would save council about $200,000 a year. Moorabool mayor David Edwards said this would be a great opportunity for the council to work closely with the community and leisure centre users to expand services in the future. Council will put out a tender in coming months seeking to identify potential new operators of the gym and group fitness programs.

By Sumeyya Ilanbey Melbourne Water has started transferring water into a Caroline Springs lake after months of low water levels. Water from the nearby Serpentine Lake, known locally as Lake Logan, is being drained into Spring Lake, which had been the subject of numerous complaints to Melton council and Melbourne Water. Social media users uploaded footage online showing the murky Spring Lake, where wildlife “has been left to perish in the low water levels”. The footage shows fish – possibly carp – struggling to swim in the lake, which had been drained late last year as part of a Victoria Police investigation. “This is the current state of the original lake of Caroline Springs,” one social media user commented. “Once a beautiful, lush, vibrant place full of life, ducks, swans, a cafe, birds of all types, and people enjoying walks around the lake. “It now looks like a deserted hole in the ground with dying fish, dying trees, a couple of starving ducks, an abandoned building boarded up and a rotting wooden bridge/walkway.” Melbourne Water was swift to act. Waterways and land manager Emily Phillips said its water management plan for Spring Lake had been activated, a five-step plan involving taking stormwater from Serpentine Lake for Spring Lake, finding another water source, regular testing of water quality and monitoring water levels. Ms Phillips assured people that taking water from the Serpentine Lake would lower water levels only to where they had been prior to recent rains. Council looks at new venue Melton council could alternate meetings between the municipality’s eastern corridor and the township after councillors voted in favour of designing a multi-function space at a Burnside community centre. While designing stage two of the Burnside Children’s and Community Centre, officers have been asked to incorporate a multi-function space that could facilitate the “efficient conduct” of council meetings. Melton corporate services manager Peter Bean said construction on stage two would be finished by the end of next year. At the request of Watts ward councillor Lara Carli, who has been vehemently pushing for council meetings to be held in the eastern corridor, a meeting was held at the Caroline Springs library two years ago. But officers said the venue was not suitable or safe. Next month’s meeting will be held at Taylors Hill Youth and Community Centre, with the possibility of also holding the June meeting there if the venue is found to be suitable. Cr Carli said holding meetings in the eastern corridor was imperative to engage with the community. “Residents in the eastern corridor feel divided – they don’t feel connected to this council, which is very sad to see as an eastern ward councillor,” she said. Rates waived for Melton refuge By Sumeyya Ilanbey A rate exemption for a refuge for women and children fleeing domestic violence has been unanimously backed by Melton councillors. Housing Choices Australia, which will manage the refuge, will purchase a Melton property as part of the state government’s response to recommendations from the Royal Commission into Family Violence. The not-for-profit group applied to Melton council for a rate exemption, which will allow funding to be maximised. Council officers
expect the value of the rates at the property would be between $1000 and $2000. A council report, presented at last week’s meeting, described the request as “compelling” for several reasons, including: • A lack of housing options being a significant barrier to women leaving violent relationships. • A lack of domestic violence refuges in the western region. • A council policy that identified the need for “affordable, accessible and flexible” facilities. • The high number of domestic violence
incidents in the municipality. In the 2014-15 financial year, police received an average of four call outs a day for domestic violence-related matters. Councillors Sophie Ramsey, Lara Carli, Michelle Mendes, Bob Turner, Steve Abboushi, Goran Kesic and Ken Hardy voted in favour of waiving the rates. Cr Kathy Majdlik was absent from last week’s meeting. As part of the state government’s $50 million Rapid Housing Assistance Program, 124 properties will be leased and 184 purchased.
The refuges are expected to be operational by June 30. Housing, Disability and Ageing Minister Martin Foley last year said the refuges were “crucial” to support women and children forced to flee their homes. “It’s exciting to see this come to fruition, achieving real bricks and mortar results,” Mr Foley said. “We are working with agencies to provide emergency relief for people in housing crisis by increasing the number of houses available to provide urgent assistance to women and children in dire circumstances.”

It’s the kind of vet hospital that caters for everything from tiny birds and marsupials to a two-tonne rhinoceros, gorillas and herds of zebra. Werribee Open Range Zoo’s vet hospital has three vets and three vet nurses, who work out of purpose-built rooms that include a large procedure room, its own pathology lab, and three wards for animals to convalesce after a procedure. There’s even a food preparation area with flavour kits, which are used to make medicines more palatable … did you know bread and jam is a popular flavour combination for monkeys? Gorillas, cheetahs and even camels have had health and dental checks and surgeries at the vet hospital, while some of the more sizable and hard to move animals – such as lions – are treated out in the field. On the day Star Weekly visits, a nine-year-old Madagascan boa constrictor called Westy is in for a routine check. Westy is one of six boas to reside at the zoo, and all have to undergo a vet check every three to four years. Vet Paul Eden said boas like Westy shed the

Masters meet as Eynesbury presents its showcase to the nation It’s only been staged for the past three years, but the Eynesbury Masters golf tournament – part of the PGA Pro-Am Series – has already become a premier event around the country.

SPORT Centrals honour skipper By Tara Murray Melton Centrals’ Adam Hulett made history on Saturday when he stepped on to the park for his 200th senior game. The current captain-coach of the first XI is the first player in the club’s history to play 200 senior games. For Hulett, it was just another game – but the club made sure the moment was enjoyed. The club surprised Hulett with a function after the game, with several past players attending the event in his honour. “It’s just another game for me, but it’s a good milestone to get,” he said. “It was good to see some old faces down there. There’s a few others who are close to the milestone – I just happened to get there first.” Hulett, who joined the club when he was about nine or 10, had opportunities to go elsewhere during his career, but decided he wanted to stay and play with his friends. For now, Hulett is focused on adding another senior premiership flag to the cabinet. Centrals sit on top of the Victorian Turf Cricket Association west A1 ladder with one and half rounds remaining. The players were itching to get on the park on Saturday, after their previous opponent, County West, forfeited, meaning they hadn’t played for two weeks. Playing at home, Centrals restricted Gellibrand to 178, bowling them out in the last over. Hulett said Centrals would have to play well to get the runs. “We were in the field all day so there was a few sore bodies after not playing the last two weeks,” he said. “It was a pretty good day. It’s a big ground, but it plays quick. “We’ve got plenty of batting depth to hopefully get us over the line.” It’s not just results that are important in the last two rounds – runs and wickets are, too. Less then 10 points separates Centrals and fifth-placed Williamstown Imperials. A loss can see a side slip a number of positions in one round. “We’re not getting ahead of ourselves,” Hulett said. “It we drop a game between now and finals, we not only lose a home final but could drop out of the top four. “Obviously, it would be good to finish on top of the ladder, but the aim is still to finish top two and get a home final.” In other matches, wickets were the order of the day for Melton South Primary School Cricket Club and Bellbridge. The Royals were bowled out for 144, with Adam Hulett is the first Melton Centrals player to notch up 200 senior games for the club. Bellbridge to resume on 4-33. (Damian Visentini)
Co-coaches plan revival It’ll be Leigh times two in the coaches box for Rockbank this season. The Riddell District Football League club last week announced Leigh Sporle and Leigh McInerney as its senior co-coaches this season. They replace Shane Rayment, who stood down for personal reasons. Rayment lasted less than a pre-season at the club. Sporle’s brother Gavin coached the Rams last year. Leigh Sporle, who coached the side in 2013, described returning to the Rams as “like groundhog day”. “It’s pretty exciting,” he said. “I applied for the role at the end of last season but was a little unsure with work commitments. “The club then appointed Shane. When he resigned I spoke with the club again. I love coaching, it’s a passion of mine. “I only stopped coaching last time as I was relocated to Brisbane for work. My brother [Gavin, now football operations manager] is here and I get to work with Leigh.” Sporle sees a lot of similarities to the last time he coached the Rams. “In 2013 the club was in a similar position [struggling at the bottom of the ladder], but a lot has changed too. Looking at the town itself there’s a lot of changes there; it will be different.” For McInerney, taking on the role is a chance to help the club. He has long been involved with the RDFL, most recently at Romsey where he coached the reserves for two seasons and helped out with the seniors last year. “I’m been good mates with Leigh and Gav for a long time,” he said. “When they asked me about helping out, I took a little time to think about it. I decided I want to help them move from the bottom of the ladder.” The pair haven’t coached together but both were teammates at the Sunbury Kangaroos and Coburg Districts. “We want to try and help,” Sporle said. “You don’t like to see sides cop beatings like they suffered last season. “It’s not just about wins and losses, it’s about improving the club as a whole.” Tara Murray
Thoroughbreds crank up the pace with new game plan It’ll be a more fast-paced Melton Thoroughbreds this season in Big V men’s division 1. Under new coach John Allison, the Thoroughbreds have adopted a new game plan, looking to improve on a preliminary final berth last season. “It’s good at the moment,” Allison said. “We’re getting up and down the court really quickly. “The boys are finding the offences a little more free-flowing. It’s not as stop and start. “We’re trying to get up the court and play basketball and, basically, not restrict our game too much.” Their game style though will still revolve around multiple scorers, which has been their strength the past couple of years. “I’d like to have everybody score. If I’ve got 10 players, I’d like to have everyone score 10 points, and that’s 100 points … that’s hard to beat,” Allison said. “People like Ivan Harris get his 15-20 points … as long as I get points from everyone else, 44 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 14, 2017
we’ll be fine,” he said, adding that the new game plan is also flowing into the youth league side, giving some of the younger players opportunities during the season. Allison said the club has put a big emphasis on youth and keeping young players, instead of them going elsewhere to develop. “It’s a big problem in Melton,” he said. “We’ve made it clear, if one of the senior guys is out, we’re going to get a youth guy and put them in there. “They’re probably not going to sit on the bench. We’re going to try and develop them,” he said. “We’re still going out there to win.” Allison said his son, Liam Allison, is one younger player who wants more opportunities. The younger Allison has just been named in the Vic Country under-18 team for the national championships later this year. It will be a slightly different Thoroughbreds line-up this season, with Cameron McCallum, Blake Allison and Jeff Crowe all departing.
McCallum has joined the South East Australia Basketball League, while Allison will play state championship division with Werribee Devils. Crowe has signed with fellow division 1 side Keilor. To help fill the holes left by Allison and McCallum, the Thoroughbreds have brought in 20-year-old Mangar Manyang from Werribee’s youth league side. Allison said Manyang was taking everything that was being thrown at him. He said internal expectations were again high for the side that won the division 1 title in 2015. “The guys we’ve got out there don’t like losing … they are very determined and passionate about Melton basketball.” Tara Murray Jason Todorov has been named Melton’s Big V captain this season. Tail-enders steady Burras’ resolve to take on Sunbury Diggers Rest Bulla will be needing its bowlers to step up on Saturday if it wants to pull off an upset against Sunbury in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup. The Burras sit fifth, less than two points outside the top four, and know a win would go a long way to sealing a finals’ spot. They face bottom side Romsey in the final round. On Saturday, the Burras put in a solid performance with the bat against Sunbury, leaving the match even after the first day’s play. It was a less than ideal start to the innings, though, with Lindon Dowsett out without scoring. The Burras were in a bit of trouble at 3-29. Darren Quarrell, who opened the batting instead of his normal position at nine or 10, along with Blake Robinson, steadied the innings, putting on 84 in their fourth wicket partnership. These two and Shannon O’Keefe then fell in quick succession, and a score below 150 was on
the cards. The tail, though, continued to fight, pushing the score to 179. Robinson top-scored with 58, while Quarrell made 32. Sunbury coach Justin Nelson said good bowling at the end of the innings stopped the Burras from adding another 20 to 30 runs. Meanwhile, Bacchus Marsh has set Woodend 237 for victory in their two-day match. The Bulls, looking for a win to overtake Woodend in the finals race, elected to bat at home, but didn’t have the best start, finding themselves in trouble at 4-46. But the lower order, along with opener Mili Sepala, responded, pushing the side’s total to 9-236. Sepala top-scored with 63, while numbers seven, eight and nine – Shaun Taylor, James Bailey and Madushanka Ekanayaka – all posted useful scores in the 30s. In B-grade, St Anthonys will need to bat well against Wallan to take the points next week.
Second-placed Wallan made 258 on day one as it looks to end St Anthonys’ slim finals chances. The Saints started well, with the Magpies struggling at 5-61, but the middle order and tail responded to push the score well past 200. Scott Gilchrist, batting at number eight, top-scored with 62. Jason Orr was the best of the bowlers for the Saints, taking 3-41. Matthew Perry, Cameron Clayton and Corey Whiteoak took two wickets each. The fifth-placed Bulls will also need a good day with the bat next week, as Sunbury United has set them 285 for victory. Big leap into the future By Tara Murray Frank Mazza is quickly adjusting to life in the fast lane. The 11-year-old Brimbank Little Athletics talent already holds a number of club records. So this year he decided to test his running and jumping against the next level. First up, he competed at the Little Athletics Victoria state multi-event championships’ 100 and 800 metres, long jump, discus and 80 metre hurdles. The overall winner is decided on adding up points recorded in each event. “I was hoping to finish in the top 10. The 800 metres was the first event, but I had one of the slowest times and was sitting 40th.” But Mazza still had his two pet events to come and a win in the long jump, by more than 30 centimetres, and third placing in the 100 metres lifted Mazza to an overall second. “I couldn’t believe it; I was really happy with the result.” He followed his performance at the multiskills meet with another standout effort at the St Albans Gift in the under-14 120 metres. Through to the final as the fastest qualifier, Mazza again had to come from behind to be in the mix. “I was the back marker and the closest person was running from seven metres,” he said. “I didn’t know how I’d go as I normally only run 100 metres. It took until the last 10 metres to get the win.” Next up for Mazza is a regional fixture that doubles as a qualifying event for next month’s state championships. He’ll compete in the 100 and 200 metres, 60-metre hurdles and long jump, his main aim being to qualify for the state championships in the 100 metres and long jump. His times and jumps done at training are as good as athletes two to three years ahead of him, and he’s closing in on age group state records. “In training my performances have been good enough for state. I jumped 4.95 metres in the multi event and at training I’ve jumped over five metres. I hope I can jump that at state.” Brimbank Little Athletics president Dennis Thornton said the centre was proud of Mazza’s efforts. “He loves being at Brimbank Little Aths. He’s put in a lot of hard work with his coaches, John Alchin and Paul Parker, which has had a lot do to with his success.” In the long term, the Caroline Springs resident is looking to the pinnacle of athletics, the Olympics. Last week he got a close-up look at some of his idols at the Nitro Athletics meet, including the biggest name in the sport. “Usain Bolt is my favourite. “I like [Australian long jumper] Fabrice Lapierre as well.”

Rams ramp up focus on junior boys and girls Rockbank Football Netball Club junior sides will be known as the Western Rams as the club looks to re-establish its junior program. The club hopes the new name, and a raft of new housing in the Rockbank area, will help draw juniors this season. It’s been seven years since the club has fielded a junior football side, and it’s never had a junior netball team. Rams’ football operation manager Gavin Sporle said the club wanted to tap into the population boom in the area. The junior teams will join the seniors at Ian Cowie Reserve. The senior sides will continue to be known as Rockbank Rams. “Getting juniors up and going is the biggest focus of the club,” Sporle said. “Our focus is to leverage the growth area around us and have our junior program established before the growth in the area really takes off.” The club is looking for under-10, under-12 and under-14 footballers and under-11, under-13 and under-15 netballers. Sporle said sponsors are keen to get involved at the junior level. “The under-14s [football] and under-15s [netball] are the target sides we are working on,” he said. “We’ll have heavily subsided fees for all our juniors this season. We really want to get this going. “There are already about 10 interested in the under-14 side, and we’ve had a couple of girls interest in playing netball.” The club has set February 20 as the deadline for new registrations so it can determine which teams it will be able to field. However, Sporle said new players would still be accepted past that date. As part of it’s new focus on youth, the club will run Auskick sessions for younger age groups this football season. It’ll be the second year the Rams have had Auskick at the club. The Rams will be providing information on the junior competition at Melton council’s movie night and community fair at Ian Cowie Reserve on Friday. Players can register on the night. Burras new girls’ footy team to foster junior stars Diggers Rest Junior Football Club is making its first foray into girls’ football. The Burras have previously had girls play in the boy’s juniors sides, but this season the club wants to field a girls’ side for the first time. The club is hoping to field an under-18 youth girls’ side in the AFL Goldfields season, with significant interest already coming in. The club had 10 registered players for the season before the start of pre-season training last week. Burras’ secretary Belinda Spillman said they wanted to get behind the push to have girls’ football now, so that they would be in a position
to start providing a pathway for female players. The club has appointed Jess Fenech as the club’s inaugural girls’ coach. “She has played in multiple women’s teams and done some coaching before,” Spillman said of Fenech. “She’s new to the area and wanted to get involved.” The club has also managed to get Nickiera Johnson on board. Johnson has been part of the Calder Cannons’ squad. Spillman said there were good signs for the club with several of the boys under-16.5 players trying to get their girlfriends on board and sponsors appeared keen to be involved.
The side will play in a Riddell District Football League competition. As well as adding a youth girls’ side, the club is looking at having boys’ sides in every age group. Win keeps Lions in finals mix By Tara Murray For Melton, it wasn’t just a win – it was a much-needed boost for the Lions in Victorian Sub-district Cricket Association’s east-west. One of the form teams before Christmas, the Lions were winless in 2017 going into their clash with Yarraville. They started the match well, their best performance with the bat for the season, amassing 6-240 on day one. After a dismal bowling performance last time out, the Lions were keen to make amends on Saturday to earn a return to the winners’ list.

Yarraville was bowled out for 204. Stead took 6-44. “He came in and played his role,” Geisler said of Stead. “It was good for him and, hopefully, he will take some confidence out of the performance. “He’s a different spinner to Dylan Clarke. The conditions helped him and he took his opportunity.”
Panthers hunt for teen talent With everything starting to fall into place at Melton South Football Club, the Panthers are looking to fill in the missing pieces. The Panthers have had record numbers on the track for their senior and reserves sides and have three times the number of under-16 players they had last season. The club, though, is struggling for numbers for the under-18.5 side. Currently they have about 12 players, but some of them are likely to play TAC Cup and/or senior football. Panthers president Brendan Morrissey said the club was looking for at least another 10 players for this season’s side. “We didn’t have under-16s in 2015 and that is flowing on to the under-18s now,” he said. “The under-16s have really picked up … we’re going from having 14 to 15 under-16s last year, up to 48 players this year. “We’ve really drawn them out of the community, but we can’t seem to engage the under-18.5s. That’s the hardest age group.” The under-18.5 side trains with the other senior sides, which includes the top team being co-coached by former AFL star Brendan Fevola and Sean Tripplett. Tripplett said both he and Fevola would work alongside under-18.5 coach Bill Clarke at training with the group. He said they had already seen some under-18.5 players who would be in the mix to play senior football. “They have a chance to be part of something special,” Tripplett said. “Fev is committed to helping them train and will work with some of them individually at times.” Details: 0409 254 330 Tara Murray
The win couldn’t have come at a better time for the Lions, with a finals spot on the line. They have moved back up to sixth with a four-point gap on seventh. Things won’t get any easier for the Lions when they face ladder leader Williamstown in a two-day match that will be followed by a one-day match against second-placed Balwyn.
Geisler is hoping the whole side takes confidence from the Yarraville win. “Ideally we’ll beat both Willy and Balwyn,” he said. “That’s the challenge. “We’ll take confidence into the game from this win. “We know if we play well, we can beat these sides above us. “Our finals hopes are in our own hands.”

Yarraville started well, was cruising at 0-74 and in control of the game at tea, despite needing more than five runs an over for victory. Enter Matthew Stead. Playing in the first XI for the first time this season, he took three wickets and Brad Jones picked up another as the Eagles went from 1-117 to 5-119. Lions playing coach Nathan Geisler said the focus then turned to getting the wicket of in-form Matthew Love – or at least restricting him. “They batted well until tea and we knew Love was the key wicket,” he said. “We got quick wickets in succession after tea and we focused on keeping Love down the other end and bowling to the new batsmen. “I played with Lovey at Footscray and I know what he can do. He batted well.” Love made 132, but he had little support from his teammates, with Mali Pereira the only other player to pass 20 and seven batsmen failing to make double figures. The loss of Love with 43 runs needed for victory ended the Eagles’ chances.

e’ve all been guilty of not paying attention on the road and most times we get away with it, albeit not always without a fright. Which is why I love Volvo’s lane-keeping technology. Say you have your head down trying to find a radio station and the car starts wandering across the road. As you drift towards the white line the lane-keeper tugs gently on the wheel to keep you within your own lane, while also reminding you that a radio program is not worth panel damage. You can have fun letting the car skip along the line by itself, and should it start following an errant white line overriding it is as easy as steering where you want to go. I’m a big fan of the XC90 and the R-Design Polestar is the sportiest number with low-profile tyres and a unique grille. The ride is sharp but it handles like a hot hatch and feels light and agile. The two-litre turbo-diesel is extremely economical as well as having remarkable punch. It’s very quick and nicely responsive. Okay, the engine is a tad noisier than most but the 71-litre tank goes a long way.
here’s no getting around how big this car is, and while it has a surround-view camera, a reversing camera and acoustic parking, it’s a handful to get into a small space. But if you’re carting seven people there are few more comfortable ways to do it. The rearmost seating for passengers six and seven is comfortable and generous enough for adults and there’s even room behind for luggage, although getting to it is not exactly dignified. This is a city SUV with low-profile tyres and hard suspension. It’s quick away from the lights and has enough power to dive into holes in the traffic. At the same time the steering is light and supple and the view of the road is commanding. I love the huge centre screen, as big as an iPad and clearly based on one. It has three separate menu screens (toggle between them by swiping) and they control almost everything in the car, from the engine start/ stop to the seat heaters – which are among the best in the business. But I’m not convinced this is worth the extra over the base XC90.
